INTRODUCTION The Model RAM-5SF Speed-Feed Ream-A-Matic represents the latest in flexible shaft tube cleaning technology. The RAM-5SF can be used manually like previous Ream-A-Matic models. In the manual mode, the full range of cleaning tools can be used to handle difficult deposits. When the deposits to be cleaned are soft enough to be removed by a nylon brush, the Speed-Feed attachment makes cleaning quick and easy.

2

ASSEMBLY 1. Place the power unit on bench or floor with the front louvered side down. 2. Insert the two large thumbscrews through slotted holes in the handlebar and fasten loosely into the tapped holes in the edges of the back of the power unit. 3. Push the dolly bar tight against the bottom of the power unit and tighten the thumbscrews. The machine may now be turned upright.

CONNECTING FLEXIBLE SHAFT 1. Select the proper size flexible shaft (GTC-701, GTC-702, GTC-703, or GTC-704) for the tube diameter and length to be cleaned. Note: When Speed-Feed attatchment is used, the flexible shaft must be 20' ( 6.1m) longer than the longest tube to be cleaned. Speed-Feed attatchment is used only with GTC-702 (Special), GTC-703 or GTC-704 Series Shaft. 2. Insert the square end of the flexible shaft into the square in the drive shaft of the machine. The shaft might have to be turned slightly for alignment. 3. Tighten the large nut securely making sure the O-ring (Part No. 805) is in place. Be careful not to cross thread the nut.

OPERATION – GENERAL 1. Connect water hose to water inlet. Water supply should be clean (use screen washer) to avoid clogging solenoid valve. Consult Goodway catalog for heavy-duty water hoses. 2. Open water supply. DO NOT RUN DRY. Solenoid valve in power unit will allow water to flow only when the machine is running. 3. Plug the ground fault cord into an outlet in accordance with the electrical requirements shown on the nameplate. Push the reset button on the ground fault. The power indicator light on the machine will light and the air pump inside the housing will start.

3

4. Tip the machine over on its back so the the flexible shaft is parallel to the floor.

OPERATION – MANUAL MODE 1. Connect either the single or double foot switch to the small air fittings on the right side (facing power unit) of the power unit. When using the single switch, connect tubing to the shorter fitting. 2. Select proper size cleaning tool and thread onto the end of the flexible shaft. Never use a tool larger than the I.D. of the tube. When using brushes, use the lock nut provided to keep brush from unthreading in the reverse direction. Note: Most tubes are rolled at tube sheet. Always measure I.D. beyond roll or consult manufacturer' manual for tube O.D. and gauge. 3. Position tube length marker on shaft casing so that when the shaft is fully inserted in the tube, only half the cleaning tool extends outside the opposite end of tube. 4. Uncoil flexible shaft completely and feed into tube. DO NOT FORCE SHAFT DOWN TUBE. Allow machine to do the work. If resistance is felt, back off 2" or 3" (51 or 76mm) and feed shaft again until it goes easily. If resistance is too great, use a smaller cleaning tool. 5. For easiest operation, insert shaft into tube and allow to remain for several hours before use to remove loops from flexible shaft. OPERATION – SPEED-FEED MODE SPEED-FEED ATTACHMENT IS DESIGNED TO BE USED ONLY WITH NYLON BRUSHES AND GTC-702 (SPECIAL), GTC-703 OR GTC-704 SERIES SHAFTS. 1. Thread the flexible shaft guide tube onto the fitting of the right side of the power unit and connect the control hoses to the small air fittings. 2. Squeeze the top of the trigger and note direction of flexible shaft rotation. Shaft should rotate counterclockwise as viewed from the tip. If it does not, reverse control hoses on air fittings. Squeeze top and bottom of trigger and check for proper operation. THE SHAFT MUST COME TO A COMPLETE STOP BEFORE REVERSING DIRECTION.

4

3. Attach Goodway nylon brush to flexible shaft. Securely tighten the small lock nut. USE ONLY SMALL LOCK NUTS SUPPLIED WITH GOODWAY BRUSHES. Use of a larger nut will jam the guide rollers. GTC-703Q and GTC-704Q Quick Disconnect Flexible Shafts and brushes can be used for 9/16"-1" (14.3mm-25.4mm) I.D. tubes. GTC-702Q Quick Disconnect Flexible Shaft can not be used in Speed-Feed Mode. 4. Remove tube length marker. 5. Install shaft stop (see "INSTALLING THE SHAFT STOP"). 6. Make sure the gear/roller set installed is the correct size for the flexible shaft being used, and that the gear portion is toward the gearbox cover. Hold the shaft casing about two feet from the brush end and insert shaft fully into the entry port on the left side of the power unit. With shaft fully inserted, squeeze top of trigger to feed shaft through the guide tube and into the control handle. 7. To adjust the forward shaft stop to the desired tube length, loosen the hex screws on the locking collar and slide locking collar to the desired position. Retighten hex screws. THE SPRING AND METAL CONE MUST BE ON THE BRUSH SIDE OF THE LOCKING COLLAR. 8. Speed-Feed is supplied with a safety strap to protect the operator in the event that a blockage is encountered in a tube and the control handle is forced back toward the operator. Fasten the strap across the tube sheet snugly enough to allow moving the control handle from tube to tube. The safety strap will need to be moved as the operator moves vertically on the tube sheet. If the tube sheet is too wide for one strap, connect additional straps as needed. Insert the strap through the eye on the top of the control handle and connect to tube sheet. 9. Position the control handle over the tube to be cleaned and squeeze the top of the trigger to enter the tube. The Speed-Feed stops automatically at the preset distance. Squeeze the bottom of the trigger to reverse out of the tube. When exiting tube, it is recommended that the control handle be held a few inches from the tube end. When the brush is seen, release the trigger. 10. When an unusually heavy build up of deposit is present, the brush may not feed completely through the tube on the first pass. I f the Speed-Feed stalls part way into a tube, stop and reverse the unit to completely exit the tube. Try another pass through the tube. Repeat this procedure until the entire length of the tube is cleaned. In extreme cases it may be desirable to switch to manual mode and use a cleaning tool other than a brush.

Installing the Shaft Stop

INSTALL THE REAR CONE, COLLAR, SPRING AND THE FRONT CONE AS FOLLOWS: 1. Insert the shaft through the RAM-5, advancing the shaft through the guide tube and gun handle, then into the tube to be cleaned for the desired length – let the brush go halfway out of the tube on the other end. 2. Go back to the machine and slide the shaft stop up as close to machine as you can get it and tighten the collar.

SHAFT STOP INSTALLED IN SHAFT

3. Activate the machine and retract the shaft a few feet then advance it until it stops. Check to make sure the brush is halfway out of the tube. WARNING: Incorrect installation will cause relay and/or motor failure.

SPEED-FEED GEAR/ROLLER REPLACEMENT DO NOT USE GREASE OR ANY OTHER LUBRICANT ON THE GEARS 1. Remove the four cover screws holding the ribbed cover on the bottom of the power unit. 2. Pry the cover gently and evenly. 3. If present, remove spacers, noting their position. The spacers must go in the same position when reassembling the unit. Not all units require spacers. 4. Remove and install gears as required. Insert gear/roller so that the gear portion is toward the cover. Please note that the main drive gear is keyed

6

to the drive of the power unit. All other gears are interchangeable. 5. Reverse the above procedure for reassembly. NOTE: When changing shaft sizes, gears must also be changed. Select gears/rollers, collar and rear cone from parts list.

FLEXIBLE SHAFTS Please refer to the booklet “Flexible Shafts – Operating and Maintenance Instructions” for important information about proper use, maintenance and storage of flexible shafts.

SPEED-FEED TROUBLESHOOTING SHAFT WILL NOT FEED FORWARD: • Check to see if shaft casing is caught on drain assembly (2257). Trim casing if needed. •

Forward stop valve stem needs oil. NOTE: The forward stop valve stem (part No. 2207, Key #12) must be oiled approximately every 10,000 tubes. Lack of lubrication can cause the valve stem to stick holding the valve open. This prevents the unit from feeding the shaft forward. Apply a light oil (3 in 1, WD-40, etc.) between the forward stop spring and the gearbox/roller housing inside the base of the power unit. Lubricant can be applied by removing the cover then placing it on the valve stem.

Reset ground fault.

Check control hose connections at power unit.

Remove control hoses at power unit and check for air flow from the small air fittings. Cover only one fitting at a time.

SHAFT WILL NOT REVERSE: •

Reset ground fault.

Check control hose connections at power unit.

Remove control hoses at power unit and check for air flow from the small air fittings. Cover only one fitting at a time.

7

UNIT RUNS BUT SHAFT DOES NOT MOVE OR MOVES SLOWLY: •

Check bends in guide tube. Bends should be no less than one foot radius.

Check to see if guide tubes need cleaning. Clean with 7/8" (22.2mm) nylon brush.

Check for clogged tube.

Remove flexible shaft from Speed-Feed unit. Wipe any grease or slime off shaft casing. If the shaft is new, it may be necessary to “rough up” the casing with some fine sandpaper.

Follow instructions under “Speed-Feed Gear/Roller Replacement” and clean the gears/rollers of any lubricant that may be on them.

Check all air hose connections.
