ome of us in the Church too often see evangelism as simply introducing people to Jesus only as a means to get to heaven. It neglects discipleship as well as the broader dimension of Jesus’s gospel of the Kingdom of God. Others fall into the trap of excluding personal evangelism purely for the goal of social activism. It’s too bad we so often err on one side or the other in this false dichotomy we’ve set up between personal salvation and social justice. Evangelism means sharing the euangelion: The Gospel, the Good News. The Good News is that Jesus came to put together a countercultural community that is committed to returning the world to right order and to restoring all that God has created. Isaiah 61, which Jesus read when he inaugurated his public ministry in Luke 4, represents Jesus’s mission statement – and therefore our mission statement. We are to preach the Good News to the poor, bind up the brokenhearted, proclaim freedom for the captives, and renew ruined cities. If we are busy doing all that, then the terms we use to talk about it (evangelism, social justice, activism, etc.) will simply no longer matter. There is power within the life of each individual who identifies himself or herself as a Jesus-follower to serve as a redeeming force within the culture and the world (2 Corinthians 5:20). And mercy is the common denominator, the underlying force that calls us, as Christians, to live out the good news Jesus proclaimed in real and need-meeting ways. If we are truly to mirror the compassion of Christ, we must reach the lost, serve with the poor, and be an active voice and advocate for setting the oppressed free; speaking up for those who lack the power or opportunity to speak for themselves. It all must matter to us, because it all matters to God. Mercy is the driving force behind the call to social justice – efforts to bring freedom and renewal to the oppressed and broken. Social justice is not just about giving relief; it’s also about empowering the individual and entire communities. Often when we talk about

social justice, we only focus on changing structures. But, if we only redesign the structures without empowering individuals within their communities, we fail to bring about systemic change. Of course, it must be said that social justice also goes beyond empowering individuals and communities. It also requires us to work at all levels of government to change the laws, institutions, barriers, and biases that oppress people. Apart from a personal relationship with Jesus, we will never be the light of Christ in the world. No matter on which side of the evangelism-social justice spectrum you stand, I encourage you to Google the words “Christians are” and scroll through the first few pages of results. It’s an exercise that’s both enlightening and discouraging. Those who are simply social activists can be just as mean and judgmental as some who proclaim Jesus evangelistically but live and act like hell. The prophet Zechariah reminds us, “Neither by power, nor by strength, but by my spirit, says the Lord” (Zechariah 4:6). Personal piety is just as essential as social justice and missional action. We believe in a God who can bring life back from the dead. If we then act on that belief with our voices, hands, feet, and bank accounts, then nothing will be impossible. At its core, the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the Gospel of the Kingdom of God, and Jesus is the King of that Kingdom. We, as his followers, are to submit to his authority in order that we may embody his mission on earth. We must move from simply debating cognitive theory and instead start holding one another accountable for naming the name of Jesus, serving the world in practical ways, and giving voice to the voiceless and hopeless. Then we are truly living out the mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Rev. I’m Not Fine

’m tired of putting a smile on and saying, “I’m fine,” or “I’m okay,” when I’m not. “Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances...” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18b) are the Christian answers we hear most often. Practicing those in the midst of feeling exhausted from trying to be "the strong one" is tough. Last month, I shared through suffering physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, I recognized that I was not living in who God said I was, and I was holding back my focus from God. When I kept "stuff" to myself, I became entrenched in my pain, depression, and loneliness, unable to rejoice or give thanks. One day of being lonely led to another day of not sharing with those I love, which led to weeks and then months of compounded thoughts of, "No one cares," and, “I'm alone." In studying Paul’s life, Acts 18:9-10 jumped off the page. In his first, two-year missionary journey, Paul had traveled about 1,235 miles. In Corinth, at this time, Paul was about 1,200 miles into his second journey. Bible commentators believe he was ready to quit, in spite of the successful spread of the Gospel. The text doesn’t tell us why, and we can only speculate if it was from physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual discouragement. No matter the cause, I can relate to the desire to walk away from everything, including God’s call

on my life. However, God encouraged Paul, "Do not be afraid, but go on speaking, and do not be silent, for I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, for I have many in this city who are my people.” God encouraged Paul to keep speaking for and about Him and provided a community to surround, encourage, and protect him. God showed me if this great man needed encouragement, why would I think I could endure my struggles alone? The entrenchment I allowed myself to continue in was contrary to who I am in God. Resting in who He says I am, doesn’t make the struggles disappear, but it does draw my focus off myself to focus on God! Contrary to what the adversary wants me to believe, I am not meant to do this alone. I need encouragement, love, and support from God and from the community He’s given me. The next step after shifting my focus and attitude to God was to share with my community that I wasn’t fine. For months, I kept everyone at arm’s length, unable to enjoy life with friends and family. When I took that next step of sharing, God used my community to surround me with encouragement. As we struggle, we don’t have to be "fine" or "okay" when things aren’t. When we are brave and honest as we reach out for help, we may also be a lifeline for someone else who needs to share their struggles. When we embrace who God says we are and the community He’s given us, we learn how to rejoice when we’re not fine.

whirlwind of activity! Every year, I commit to put less on my calendar during the holiday season, and every year the activities seem to multiply or that Elf on the Shelf adds to my calendar! I love every minute of it (mostly), but I can also find myself needing an easy goto dish to take to holiday parties. In the spirit of the holidays and over-commitment, I want to share my go-to holiday dessert: holiday cranberry bars. When I was in grad school several years ago, a friend of mine shared this recipe with me and I make them every single year. They are one of my absolute favorite indulgences around the holidays and so quick and easy to put together. Fresh cranberries steal the show in this recipe. The cranberries burst a

2 Cups of Butter softened 2 Cups of sugar 2 Eggs
1 ½ tsp almond extract (or vanilla extract if you prefer) 2 Cups all-purpose flour 1 12oz bag of fresh cranberries Preheat oven to 350 and coat a 9x13 pan with cooking spray. Cream the butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla together. Slowly add flour to mixture, a ½ cup at a time. Your batter will be very thick. Fold cranberries into mixture. Spread into your buttered pan and bake 40-50 minutes or until lightly browned. Let cool completely before cutting into small squares. Enjoy!

t had been a long and busy day. I worked my regular hours then taught an evening class, and it was almost 8:00 as I headed home. It was late, I was tired and hungry, not a good combination. I decided to make a few phone calls as I traveled knowing that once I arrived home, I wouldn’t have the energy to do so. As I talked with a good friend, I approached the familiar back road home and not paying attention slowed up at the stop sign, but didn’t stop. As soon as I turned onto the road, you guessed it; blue lights came from almost out of nowhere! I quickly ended my conversation, gathered my insurance card and driver’s license as I slowly rolled the window down. The officer was serious as he approached my car almost scolding me, “Ma’am, you ran the stop sign.” I was caught. I had no excuse. I wasn’t paying attention; I had become so familiar with this short cut, that I had become lazy and was just going through the motions. I was guilty. He returned to his car to verify my information and as I waited on the side of the road, blue lights, flashing behind me, folks passing by and looking at me with eyes that somehow understood, I thought about the setup of sins in our lives. As we compromise in an area of our lives, it becomes easier with time act out that sin; we feel more secure in the back roads that we’ve taken, it’s just what we do! And the enemy attacks us when we’re at our weakest, when we’re comfortable, even confident in ourselves. Or when we’re lazy and not paying attention; in those time when we’re more likely to run past the strategically planned “God-ordained delays;”

and once out there, we are caught. We’re exposed for everyone to see. We are left speechless. There are no excuses. We are guilty. I remember being taught as a little girl to stop, look, and listen. What a powerful lesson that was. Well, as a big girl, I’m reminded that I need that simple lesson in both my practical and spiritual life. I need to stop and consider that every action/decision has consequences. I need to look and make sure I am doing what is right and pleasing in God’s sight even when I think no one is looking. And I need to listen. I need to always be aware of the enemy’s’ tactics so that I can daily guard my life with God’s protective armor. So I have my first ticket. Yeah, there were no warnings or “breaks” given this time, so I’m waiting on the violation fee. I’m so glad that God’s policing of my life is different. He’s there when I run the stop signs of my life and He pulls me over as well, but He does so to put me back on track. And although there are consequences, He lovingly carries me through to the next sign posts of my life and teaches me that my way may seem right but His way is right. I’m so thankful for His guidance in my life. With Him, I am empowered to stop, look, and listen to the stop signs in my life! Think of a time when God was telling you to stop, look, and listen. Not All Pizzas are Created Equal

n the Hesterly home the following statement rings true, “not all pizzas are created equal!” We eat a lot of pizza in my family. In fact, every Friday is what we call “Pizza Friday.” We either go out to a local pizza place or order pizza for dinner. It’s one of those things we look forward to each week. Just the other night after my son’s soccer practice, we took the kiddos to a local pizza place in the town I went to college. This particular place is special to my wife and me. Before kids, we’d go here all the time for the tasty pizza, garlic bread, and good vibes. We were excited to take the kiddos to “our place” so they could grow to love this place and it’s pizza like we have. We got drinks, breadsticks and ordered a half cheese half pepperoni pizza. After inhaling a couple breadsticks the pizza arrived and it looked amazing! Micah (my 8-yr old boy) says, “Hey dad, the pizza looks good.” I get my piece of pizza, blow on it (because it’s piping hot) and take a bite. It’s just like I remembered! It’s practically heaven in the shape of a pizza. My son takes his first bite and then says these words, “Dad, this

pizza isn’t as good as (another pizza restaurant close to where we live).” I couldn’t believe what I just heard! Not five seconds later, Ava (my 6-yr old) agrees 100% with her older brother. Who are these kids? How could they say that this other restaurant’s pizza tasted better than this one? I looked at my wife, shook my head, and smiled to myself. While playfully arguing which pizza place was better, I had this thought. Not all pizza places are the same. Not all children are the same. Not all families are the same. That’s a great thing! In Psalm 139:14 it says, “Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous-how well I know it” (New Living Translation). The writer here is thanking God for making him exactly the way the Creator intended him to be. Just like you and your kiddos, God has made your family unique and wonderful. Diversity in your kiddos brings out their uniqueness that gives character to your family. Sure, you might not all like the same things, but that’s okay. It’s learning to recognize and celebrate the things that make your family unique that’s most important. In other words, with all the imperfections and complexities that your family is, God wouldn’t want it any other way. It’s my prayer that you will see it and know it well.

Wrinkle, Wrinkle, Go Away

s we age, our faces begin to show the effects of gravity, sun exposure, and years of facial muscle movement, such as smiling and chewing. The underlying tissues [collagen and elastin] that keep our skin looking youthful and plumped-up begin to break down with age. As we continue to use our facial muscles, the thin stiffened skin shows signs of wrinkles, often leaving laugh lines, frown lines, smile lines, and facial creases over the areas where this muscle movement occurs. Some of the wrinkles are related to genetics, but most are related to sun exposure and “skin experiences”. Facial soft-tissue fillers can help fill in these lines and creases, temporarily restoring a smoother, more youthfullooking appearance. When injected beneath the skin, these fillers plump up creased and sunken areas of the face, erasing years away. Injectable fillers may be used alone or in conjunction with a resurfacing procedure, such as a laser skin treatment, chemical peel, or a re-contouring procedure, such as liposuction, fat transfer, or mini facelift. Facial fillers or injectable fillers are primarily used to improve the appearance of the skin’s texture. They can help fill out deep facial wrinkles, creases and furrows, “sunken” cheeks, skin depressions and some types of scars like acne pits. They can also be used to add a fuller, more sensuous look to the lips and improve “lipstick lines.” Many fillers are available on the market. Common fillers include: Restylane, Radiesse, Jeuvaderm, Belotero, Sculptra and Bellafill. Each of the listed fillers is made from different substances and have different characteristics and modes of action. Effects and length of time are vastly different for each of the common fillers. Some filler effects can last more than 5 years! Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport are not fillers, but rather neuromuscular blockade medications. They are used in

conjunction with fillers to help smooth creases caused by overactive muscles (such as forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, and frown lines). The fillers help lift the cracks in the skin, while the neuro-blockers causes the underlying facial muscles to be weak. The weakened muscle is then not able to contract exposing the wrinkle. Excess facial skin, fatty deposit, or neck skin is more appropriately treated by skin tightening, surgical and non-surgical face and neck lifts, or forehead lifts in conjunction with fillers and or neuromodulators. Depending on the type of facial filler used, the results may last anywhere from a few months to a year and a half or more. Facial rejuvenation is very individualized. That’s why it’s important to discuss your hopes and expectations during the initial facial consultation with your surgeon. In your initial consultation, make sure to discuss and select a treatment option based on your goals and concerns, your anatomy problems, and your lifestyle. Make sure that your aesthetic ideals match what your cosmetic surgeon has estimated and planned for you. There is a definite art involved for appropriate filler injections. It is not paint-by-numbers, but rather face sculpture. The key is not the filler, but the artist who is completing the procedure. When injectables are administered by a qualified surgeon, complications are infrequent and usually minor in nature. It is wise to search the internet for effects and characteristics of the above listed facial fillers/neuromodulators prior to a facial evaluation and treatment planning.
