Did Jesus Pay Taxes?

or some entrepreneurs, businesses, and companies, April 15 is an unpleasant day of the year. That is because it is time to file taxes. In wake of their return to Capernaum, Jesus and His disciples were met by religious representatives of the temple with a savaging hunger to accuse Him with tax evasion, a violation of the civil law. Before the Babylonian captivity, all male Israelites twenty years old and over, were to pay the temple tax (Ex.30:12-14; 38:26). After the Babylonian captivity, all Jews were required to pay the temple tax. Being a former tax collector (Matt.9:9), Matthew records two accounts concerning the subject of paying taxes. One was the temple tax (Matt.17:24-27) and the other was the poll tax (Matt.22:15-22). In both accounts, Jesus was tested by the hypocritical leaders with the questions, “Do you pay the two-drachma tax?” and “Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” I. Jesus Paid the Temple Tax (Matt.17:24-27) Usually, the temple tax was collected by the high priest. In Jesus’ day, two drachma was valued at about two days’ wages, i.e., ($84.20 Modern U.S. equiv. 2002). Jesus, being the Great High Priest and the Son of God (Heb.5:5), would have been exempt from paying taxes on His own temple. Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and also, God the Son. Neither were the disciples required to pay taxes, because they too were sons, and not strangers. Yet, the religious leaders were too blind to recognize such truth. Wow! With a coin from the mouth of a fish, Jesus paid taxes for Himself and for Peter (about $164.40 Modern U.S. equiv. 2002). Since the

6 // April 2018

Omnipotent Creator of the universe denied Himself by paying taxes, shouldn’t we also do the same? II. Jesus Paid the Poll Tax (Matt.22:15-22) Much like all currency in every country, Tiberius Caesar’s graven image and inscription was on the silver coins. To the Jews, that was a violation of the second commandment (Ex. 20:4). The Herodians and the Pharisees hoped to trap Jesus and get Him to either offend Rome or the Jews in His response. Jesus, the God-Man, knew that whatever authority Caesar had, ultimately came from God (who is greater than Caesar). To not pay tribute, primarily, was to dishonor not only man, but also God. The point is, earthly governors are to be obeyed as an act of obedience to the heavenly God (Rom.13:1-2; 1Pet.2:13-14). If God allows ungodly powers to rule, then it is part of His sovereign will. In essence, to render unto Caesar was really an act of obedience to God. Render to Caesar [Government], but Surrender to Christ [God]. Paying Taxes Exhibits Seven Godly Characteristics 1. Obedience to God (Rom.13:1-2) 2. Submission to civil authority (1Pet.2:13-15) 3. Self-denial (Phil.2:5-8) 4. Financial dependence on God (Pr.3:5-6, 9-10) 5. A good witness to the world (Acts 1:8; 1Pet.2:12) 6. The mind of Christ (Phil.2:5) 7. Favor with God and man (Luke 2:52)

hink about football teams that have won the Super bowl—how did it happen? If you asked the players, they wouldn’t simply describe that one big game. They might describe off-season workouts during spring and summer, pre-season planning and countless meetings, studying plays and video tape, months of deliberate nutritional dieting and conditioning. All of that culminated with a Super Bowl championship. To understand how the goal was reached, you must connect all of the dots along the way. It’s the same with understanding how most millionaires became millionaires. Only a tiny percentage of millionaires gained their wealth overnight through a lottery ticket or inheritance windfall. On the contrary, the vast majority of millionaires in America today reached that status through a long process of deliberate choices daily, weekly, and monthly. As I’ve stated in previous columns, a “millionaire” isn’t somebody who earns a million dollars per year. Rather, it’s someone who has a net worth of at least one million dollars once their debts (liabilities) are subtracted. They are “worth” at least one million dollars. Let me tell you about a millionaire couple I know. This couple in their 40’s considers themselves very ordinary and even “middle class.” One is a teacher; the other is a mid-level manager. When they married, this couple was nearly broke. As newlyweds, they earned a combined annual net income of less than $26,000. But they immediately committed to a few simple principles as newlyweds: faithfully tithing ten percent of their income, saving a tenth of their income into their retirement accounts (401k, IRAs), and avoiding consumer debt like car payments and credit cards. This meant that they couldn’t always join their friends at fancy dinners or fancy vacations, although they

10 // April 2018

enjoyed these activities from time to time as their incomes grew over the years. They saved up to buy cars with cash, and these were always used cars, never new. They used debit cards instead of credit cards, and they used cash whenever possible for purchases. Furthermore, they chose a 15-year fixed rate mortgage for their home, even when they moved into larger, nicer homes twice over the years. Consequently, they quickly built equity in their homes, and their current home is nearly paid off at this point. All along the way, this couple saw themselves as “middle class.” They didn’t grow up in a wealthy household, and they aren’t flashy in their clothes or vehicles. No one would ever guess that today this couple is worth over one million dollars. Their journey to millionaire status in their 40’s was, in retrospect, very boring, very quiet, and almost inevitable. Yes, that’s the good news—people who make these same choices to live on less than they make, invest at least a tenth of their income in tax-deferred retirement plans (preferably the stock market which offers the greatest potential return), avoid debt as a general rule, and faithfully tithe to the Lord—becoming a millionaire is practically inevitable! If you connect these dots, millionaire status is the destination at the end of this journey. One more point, and a quick “reality check.” Did becoming millionaires change this couple in any way? Not at all. Their million dollars is in a combination of their retirement accounts and the equity in their properties. They don’t have a million dollars cash in an accessible account. They can’t suddenly buy a yacht or cruise around the world. But they will retire comfortably and likely be able to leave their children and grandchildren a sizable financial legacy. It didn’t just happen—step by step, choice by choice, they planned it. Now it’s your turn.

Gò0dNews for Men

What’s Your Role? everal years ago, back in West Virginia, I was talking with a friend about his work; he was helping distribute food form the local food pantry. In the middle of the conversation he shared with me an event that took place that caused him to almost quit the pantry. He recounted that a young lady had come in with four children and was in need of some assistance. So, joyfully, the pantry put together several bags and boxes of groceries for this lady and her family. Going outside to place the food in the car for the lady, my friend ran into a young man in his 20’s (my friend was in his late 60’s at the time) who was setting in the front seat. The young man looked up with his headband on, while smoking a cigarette and playing a hand-held video game, and instructed my friend that he could put the groceries in the trunk. The idea of this young man being so lazy and self-absorbed that he wouldn’t even get out to help was almost more than my friend could bare. My friend politely set the box of groceries down and instructed the young man that if he wanted these groceries for his family he would need to get out and put them in the trunk himself. We live in a time when we hear things like gender neutral or gender assignment. We fail to see that the God-given roles of mankind are being lost in confusion and godless ideologies. What is the role for men today? What does God say that a man is to do and be for his family? For the sake of this article I will only focus on one role by which is the most important role of any man and father. We won’t get into the argumentative roles of protector and provider, but the most important role for man, is that we model our love of God and our dependency and worship of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is summed up the best in the book of Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy 10:12 says, “And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways

12 // April 2018

and to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” When we serve God faithfully, protection and provision become the natural, normal side effects. We don’t have to struggle in obtaining these things; they come as byproducts of our relationship with God.

Let me share two scriptures, relating to a man and his children when they are raised in a house where men are not afraid to show their family that they love the Lord Jesus. Proverbs 14:26 says, “In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.” And Proverbs 20:7 says, “The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.” What example are we living before our children and families today? One in which we are too lazy to get out and help those helping us, or are we living before them our love and desire for the Lord Jesus Christ. I vote we love God large and out loud for all to see!

God Is Speaking here are so many ways God speaks to us. He wants us to know His will and plans for our lives. But sometimes it seems difficult to hear our Father's voice when so much chaos and stress is surrounding us. Even just everyday life with your family, job, and the day-to-day business can distract us and make us feel like

we just cannot hear what God is saying. So many times in my life I have needed answers and direction, but it felt as if I could not hear God's voice. But God is always speaking! We just need to be still and listen. Our Father wants to speak to His children! John 10:3 says, “The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” And John 10:27 says, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” Also, Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

14 // April 2018

How can we hear God’s voice? God speaks to us in different ways. One way is through His word. Reading the Bible every day is so important in our walk with God. His voice always lines up with the word of God. The word is our final authority! Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Before you start reading, ask God to speak to you through His word. The Holy Spirit will bring a new revelation as you read. He will speak to your heart through His word. God speaks to us through prayer and worship. I have found that when I pour out my heart to God in prayer and worship, and then wait for Him to speak, He always does. The next time you pray, ask God to speak to you. It’s a powerful thing to write down what He says in a journal. Keep a journal of your prayers and the words God speaks to you. This is a word the Lord spoke to me in my prayer time. "I will speak. Be still in my presence. I will refresh you, restore you, renew your mind, fill you with joy in my presence. I say "Peace be still" to every storm- every worry-every concern. Leave it all at my feet. I Am the peace speaker. Peace, be still. You are mine. I watch over you. No harm will come your way. You are my precious one, the apple of My eye, My beloved. My love for you is beyond what you can comprehend. I am always with you. “I'm doing new things in your life. These new things are coming out! Rising up! I'm so proud! Keep walking! It's here! Yes! It's time!” God speaks to us in many ways. We just need to be still and listen. God wants to speak to you today. He has good things in store for your life. He cares about you. About The Author

fter a fast last year that consisted of vegetables I started to go into the direction of a plant based diet. After research I found that plants give humans enzymes to digest themselves but also to digest meat your body actually has to divert pancreatic cells from fighting cancer to digest the meat. I was fascinated by this information because humans were basically created to be vegetarians at one time. The more plant based my diet became the better I felt. While my husband is not a vegetarian, I created this recipe and it has become one of his favorites. In any case, a mostly plant based diet is important for everyone; so here is my recipe. It could used as a “Meatless Monday” idea or as a jumping off point for a new foray into a plant based diet.

Ingredients 1 small Butternut Squash (1 - 2 lbs) (peeled, cored and diced) 1 medium onion sliced thinly 1 can black beans 1 jar tomatillo salsa 1 container of chive cream cheese or (almond milk Kite hill chive cheese) 1 package wheat tortillas (8 tortillas) 2 cloves garlic (chopped or put thru a garlic press) 4 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil On a sheet pan combine the diced Butternut squash and sliced onion. a 400 degree oven for 25 minutes until the onions are slightly caramelized and the butternut squash is cooked through. While the butternut squash is cooking, drain and rinse the black beans. Then coat the bottom of a saucepan with olive oil and two to three (I love garlic) garlic cloves and cook on medium for a couple of minutes. Add the beans and cook them until the get soft and start to break down. Then, with a potato masher, mash the beans until they are creamy and smooth. If they seem a little dry add a little splash of broth, but you want them to be the consistency of refried beans (paste consistency). Once the butternut squash is done, it’s time to assemble. In a 9x12 baking dish assemble the enchiladas. First smear about a tablespoon of the cream cheese or almond milk Kite Hill cheese (both are delicious). Then spread a portion of the black beans and the butternut squash and onion mixture. Roll and place seam side down in the baking dish. Top the dish with the Tomatillo Salsa and bake at 350 degrees for approximately 20 minutes. You are only looking to heat everything together so it’s melted and delicious. About The Author

very essence. God, by nature, is good. Psalm 34:8 states: "Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” God is the foundation of goodness and of everything good. He did not obtain it from another source. We, as people, can have good traits or do good deeds, but goodness is not in our character. The Bible says in Romans 3:10, “As it is written, ‘There is none righteous, or good no, not one. Our goodness alone only comes from God.’” We experience God‘s goodness every day whether we realize it or not. It’s God‘s goodness that wakes us up in the morning. It’s His goodness that gives life to all humanity. God’s goodness is like His grace; it is unmerited! Meaning you can't pay for it, you can't work for it! It shows up just when we need it! Psalm 23:6 says, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” I’m able to talk about God’s goodness, because I know

Gò0dNews for Teens

Awaken the Misfits eing a teenager is difficult. Teenagers have no filter and let it all out. They tear each other down and praise anything that has a screen. I had a hard time by making other things bigger than God. I focused on what people say. I cared about what people thought. I got so consumed in the world and what it viewed me as, and totally shut out what God said I was. As I let the world consume and then mold me. I would listen to what other people called me. I tried to fit in to stop of the negativity that was being shot at me, but it just made it worse. I would go home and tear myself down. I forgot the promise and the word of the Lord. It felt like years of torment. I felt alone. I had no father figure in my life and felt abandoned. I knew the Lord was with me, but I just picked up my chains and kept moving. I would try to fill the void that was missing inside of me. "That’s what's missing from me that is making me different!" I said to myself. On a quest I tried to find new friends and even tried finding a boyfriend to fill my empty soul. It felt like I tried everything but nothing worked. I gained friends, but then lost them because there was still something about me that was "odd". Then almost went through with a relationship with a guy but got turned down because I was so different. I became angry with God and asked him why he made me so different. Why me out of a million other people! Why did you curse me with such a strong dislike from the world? Why am I so different from every man on this Earth? Every man looked at me with disrespect it felt like. Struggling with all this confusion I went to a conference called “Men's Ramp.” I went with a small group of guys. While we were there I felt out of place, like I wasn’t meant to be there. I compared myself to

26 // April 2018

every man in there and titled myself. I knew I could never be "manly" out of all those guys after God. Then one moment later a man came over to me and spoke over me what God was telling him. He told me that

God was describing me to the man. He told me "Stop comparing yourself to all these men. I have called you to stand out among every man here. No matter what you think. You are the manliest man here. You will reach other people that these men cannot! You will lead a Movement of Misfits." If you’re reading this and you think you stick out too much to be called by God, stop there. You are unique. Don’t let anyone or yourself tell you that you are not. The Lord has called you to do so much! Maybe he also called you to awaken a generation of misfits! About The Author

God Gives You Power to Get Wealth! id you know that God is giving you power to get wealth right now? Deuteronomy 8:18 says, “And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.” In this verse, the word “power” means vigor, force, or capacity (Strong’s Concordance). I love that word “force,” because it’s English meaning conveys exactly what God communicates regarding wealth-building in other Scripture verses. A “force” is power that moves from one thing into another. For example: • If you’re applying force to open the lid of a jar, the force moves from you to the jar, affecting change upon the jar lid. • If you’re applying force to move a sofa, the force flows from you to the sofa; your force moves the sofa. • If you apply force to open a refrigerator door, that force moves from you to the door of the refrigerator, opening that door and bringing you new possibilities (new food, drink, etc). So, force moves from the source to the recipient. And when that power flows through the recipient, it affects change. God is the source of wealth. He’s also the source of the power—the force—that flows through you. And in His goodness, grace, and generosity, He has sovereignly decided to move through you to help you get wealth. The power comes from Him, and He flows through you to affect change in your finances. This goes along with

30 // April 2018

Psalm 127:1-2, which says, “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows; for so He gives His beloved sleep.” God works through you to get wealth as you let His power flow. Power only works if it flows. The flow is what creates change in the recipient. For example, if your power weren’t flowing through the sofa, the sofa wouldn’t move. You’d just get a bruised hand from pushing! Likewise, if your power weren’t flowing through the refrigerator door, the door wouldn’t open. You would get strong muscles from pulling on it, but you’d stay mighty hungry! God gives you POWER to get wealth. By doing so, He confirms His covenant which He made with our spiritual ancestor, Abraham. • That you’ll bless and be a blessing; • That in you all the nations of the earth will be blessed; and • That He will make your name great. If you’re excited about this Scripture too, pray this: Father God, I present myself to you as a willing vessel! Flow through me with your power to get wealth. Help me to enjoy that wealth; to bless my family; and to bless the Kingdom. Thank you, Father God! In Jesus’s name, amen.

Christ-First Marriages very time I read the story of Moses in the Bible, it amazes me of how many excuses he made to try to get out of what God commanded him to do. When God told Moses He was going to send him to Pharaoh so that he could deliver the Israelites out of Egypt, Moses replied, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” (Exodus 3:11). Then he said to God, “What if they don’t believe me or listen to me?” (Exodus 4:1). He even tried to use his speech problem as an excuse; “I am slow of speech and tongue” (Exodus 4:10). And this got me thinking about marriage, and how so many people make excuses of why they can’t follow God’s commandments on how to act as a husband or wife. So many times I have heard comments like, “Well my husband doesn’t respect me, so I’m not going to respect him.” Or “Well my wife doesn’t show me love, so I’m not going to show her any.” If you find yourself saying things like this or justifying ungodly actions, let me just say this to you: There is absolutely no scripture in the Bible that excuses us from obeying God’s commandments. When you stand before God, you will be accountable for your actions. You will be accountable for how you treat your spouse. “So then, each of us will give account of ourselves to God” (Romans 14:12). That means that, as a Christian, you are expected to do what’s right in the eyes of God, even when your spouse isn’t. Wives, you are called to respect your husbands. “Let the wife see that she respects her husband” (Ephesians 5:33). Husbands, you are called to love your wife. “Husbands, love you wives, as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her” (Ephesians 5:25). In marriage you are commanded not to deprive your spouse of sex. “Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer” (1 Corinthians 7:5).

32 // April 2018

When my marriage had fallen apart, and my husband was caught in an adulterous affair, I could have easily made an excuse to move on. I could have easily said, “Well, my husband and I aren’t happy any more. My husband isn’t living for God. He’s given up, so I can, too.” But instead, I chose a much better path. I chose to rise up and be the better person. I chose to dig deep into scripture and learn what it would take to be a Christ-like wife. I chose to surrender to God and allow

him to transform my heart and mind. I chose to love my husband, forgive my husband, and show grace to my husband because that is what God requires from me. Even through the hurt, the pain, and the confusion, I chose to be a wife that pleases and honors God. My goal in life is to obey him first and foremost, and there is no excuse for me not to. Will you make that commitment today? Will you commit to obey God’s biblical principles and become the husband or wife God has called you to be, no matter what? It’s time to stop making excuses and start making changes. Your marriage depends on it. About The Author

Listening with Your Heart and Healing with Your Smile young woman, Sarah, walks into the doctor’s office, pain on her face and fighting back the tears in her eyes. The nurse kindly smiles, touches her hand and asks her the question, “On a scale of one to ten, with ten being the worst pain ever, how would you rate your pain?” Sarah is no longer able to hold back the tears and responds, “This headache is horrible, at least an 8 or 9.”

The nurse places a gentle hand on her shoulder and says a silent prayer. Compassion, concern, and love in the nurse’s heart is evident in her touch, her expression, and her tone of voice. They finish the necessary questions and the nurse suggests that Sarah lie down and close her eyes for a few minutes while she waits for the doctor to come see her. As the doctor glances over Sarah’s chart and enters the room, the Holy Spirit quickens the doctor’s heart with the love of a father. He smiles and offers Sarah a hand to help her sit up on the exam table, asking her “Sarah, what brings you in to see me today?” She responds that she has been having bad headaches. The

34 // April 2018

doctor again asks the question, “On a scale of one to ten, with ten being the worst pain ever, how would you rate your pain now?” Sarah responds, “About 6 or 7. It feels a little better.” The doctor asks, “Sarah, can you tell me how your headache started today?” He listens attentively as she tells him briefly about the crazy morning that she was having before the headache started, with the husband, the kids, the car and the job! The doctor kindly reminds Sarah that even though she is caring for others, it is important for her to take a few minutes to relax and take care of herself, too. The doctor hands Sarah two prescriptions. The first is for a medication that will reduce the pain of the headaches and the second reads, “Take 15 minutes of relaxing quiet time twice a day as needed for Sarah“. She smiled and the nurse once again asked the question, “Sarah, on a scale of one to ten, how would you rate you pain now?” “About 2 or 3.” She’d had no pain medicine! The prescription had not yet been filled! The love of God shining through a warm touch, a caring smile, and a listening heart had eased her pain! Transformed her tears to a smile! Jesus asked those that he healed, “What would you have me do for you?” (Luke 18:41 NIV). Jesus listened with compassion. Jesus healed with touch and kind, encouraging words. Jesus stated, “These signs shall follow them that believe, In my name, they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover. “ As you encounter hurting people in your life today, take time to reduce their pain by listening with your heart and healing with your smile. Our Way Is Not His Way

t was not an easy decision to leave my job in Chattanooga, leave my family, take an enormous pay cut, and basically, start all over. I applied to a PhD program in Economics a couple of years ago. My GRE score was not high enough to be admitted to the PhD program. I did not have enough time to retake the test before the application deadline. An advisor told me the school would not even look at my application since I failed to make the score they required for the PhD program, so I never finished my application and actually forgot about it. At the end of April, I received a message from the head of the Master’s program asking me if I would be interested in getting a Masters degree in Economics. I was accepted to the program, so I began job hunting. I ran across a great direct hire company, but most of the jobs were thirty-five to forty-five minutes from school, which is a long way considering the traffic in the area. It would make it difficult for me to get to class on time. In June, I went to the school for a tour of the campus. While I was there, I met one of the Economics professors who suggested I apply for a Graduate Teaching Assistantship since I wanted to be a professor. When I returned home, I filled out my application, but I was running behind on Monday so I did not get the application in the mail. Timing was crucial since it was summer and scholarships were limited. I mailed my application from Chattanooga on Tuesday around 12:40 pm and on Wednesday around 4:30 pm I had an email

36 // April 2018

saying that I was offered a GA position. I did not know that mail could even travel that fast. I really wanted to teach, but I was told it was very difficult to obtain a position as an adjunct professor without teaching experience, especially at a state school.

This semester the professor I was working for left five weeks into the semester. I was asked to take both of his classes for the rest of the semester. It was difficult since I had two classes of my own but with God’s help I made it and finished with great grades. When God tells you to do something, it may not be easy or even happen the way you planned, but He always makes a way.

SVTs are thrombosis in the more superficial veins. They can occur in the extremities, abdominal wall, and the breasts. SVTs

To prevent the formation of SVT and DVT, there are certain

precautions patients can take. If you have varicose veins, it is crucial to consult with a physician who specializes in vein disease for review and options. Other proactive measures include wearing medical-grade compression stockings, staying physically active, and maintaining adequate hydration. The use of compression stockings and low grade blood thinners during surgical procedures has proven beneficial to decreasing SVT and DVT in patients undergoing surgery with general anesthesia.

Risk Factors

Certain factors can contribute to the risk of developing

SVT and DVT, such as varicose veins, surgery [especially orthopedic surgery of the lower extremities], prolonged bed rest, malignancy, and injury can all increase the likelihood of SVT cause pain and discomfort, but are usually not life threatening. DVT can be life threatening. DVTs are blood clots occurring in the deep veins, most common in the pelvis and lower extremities. Due to the location and size of the thrombus, a DVT clot can potentially break loose and travel to the lungs, resulting in a pulmonary embolism (PE). SVTs can be treated to decrease associated pain and progression of thrombus into the deeper veins. Suspicion of DVT requires immediate medical attention. In fact, each year, an estimated 200,000 people die from PE as a result of the detached

and DVT. Some patients may have family genetic tendencies for thrombosis coagulopathy. Coagulopathy can be screened by a battery of blood test as well as a genetic screening. Don't let untreated varicose veins progress into a lifethreatening condition. With today's advancing technology, patients with vein disease have many options. Minimally invasive vein treatments like Radiofrequency vein closure (VNUS) and endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), Clarivein, and Vennaseal have almost eliminated the need for more invasive procedures such as painful vein striping surgery.
