FALL INTO HEALTHY HABITS THIS AUTUMN

Just as spring is a time for rebirth, autumn is also considered a transitional season.

• HOLIDAY CAMPS

For many, it is a favorite time of year, but for others it can be a trigger to falling off the health and fitness wagon. After all, how can you be expected to ignore pumpkin spice lattes?

• VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

“Fall ... is a great time to start a fitness program because you’re going to create good habits for the holiday season and the upcoming winter months,” says Justin Price, owner of Biomechanics, a personal training and wellness coaching facility in San Diego, Calif.

• Y’S MEN OUTREACH

The following tips will give you ideas on how to stay healthy (and maybe even avoid the pumpkin cheesecake) through what is arguably one of the most pleasant times of the year: * Head for the hills. Fall is a great time to get outside and explore your own backyard. So, grab a friend and find a local park to walk, run or bike on. If you’re lucky enough to live close to hills or mountains, autumn is a perfect time to go for a hike. * Turn chores into a workout. Raking leaves or gardening burns about 150 calories every 30 minutes, so if you find that you don’t have time for exercise, grab a rake or a hoe, and turn seasonal tasks into a fat-burning workout. * Drink plenty of water. Without water, no living thing can survive, which means it is crucial to maintaining optimal health. While water has a myriad of health benefits, research has shown that in order for your body to function properly, it must continuously work to maintain a proper pH, or chemical balance. * Try something new. Fall is the perfect time to gain new physical skills, says Price. Always wanted to learn to in-line skate or ride a horse? Fall is a great time to explore an activity that you’ve always wanted to try.

CHILDCARE HIGHLIGHTS CAMP FLO was a great success! Hurricane Florence caused students to be out of school longer than expected, so the Y gave them a place to go and get active! We had an overall total of 31 kids in attendance, several being new campers! Thanks to the Arts Council of Wayne County and Wayne County 4-H for joining the Y in serving our community through Camp Flo. We hope that all youth and families were enriched and that our staff made an impact on the children to help create a positive change in our community!

HURRICANE FLORENCE HIGHLIGHTS

Together we have weathered the storm and worked with the community to overcome the adversity. The Y served as a shelter for emergency responders, a place to take showers for the community, a respite for people who needed to get out of the house, a recharge station for those without power, a place for students while school is out, and more. The Y slowly made its way back to normalcy and we pray that you have too. “Love your neighbor as yourself”Galatians 5:14

Y STORIES

The Goldsboro Family YMCA has been blessed with wonderful members over the years. The Y positively impacts individuals, but those individuals also have an impact on the Y. If you have ever been to the Y in the morning, you have seen Leroy and Irene Small. The Smalls are some of the Y’s impactful members, and have been members since April 2, 1996. Irene recalls the exact date. Since they joined, they have come to the Y six days a week from 6am-12pm. The Smalls say the Y has helped them both physically and mentally. Since they have no family in the area, the Y is their home away from home. Without the Y, at 87 and 85, they would not be in the condition they are now. Leroy talks specifically about his diabetes.

Going to the Y keeps it under control. And he should know. In 2003, Leroy had part of a leg amputated due to complications with diabetes. Since then, he has been dedicated to exercising, has his diabetes under control and no longer takes medication for it. Irene also praises the health benefits of the Y as she attends the Silver Sneakers fitness classes each week. “The Y is so much more than just a gym. Exercise is the best thing you can do. We have many friends here. It’s our second family,” Irene says. Next time you come to the Y in the morning, stop by and have a cup of coffee with Irene or Leroy.
