CELEBRATING

THE YEARS OF JOHN RICHARDS

Passing on the Torch: Heading to Retirement John Richards, CEO of the Goldsboro Family YMCA has been a faithful advocate for children, families, and the community. John has served the Goldsboro Family YMCA for 33 dedicated years. John has spent countless hours coaching and teaching young swimmers in his early years at the Y as a swim coach. He has taught many children to never give up and always do their best. “The biggest influence of my life would have to be my swim coach. He taught me so much,” says Andrew. He always said “if you believe you can do it, you can always do it with God’s help, and always try your best.” John continues his love for this sport today by serving on YMCA national swim committees, where he will continue volunteering after retirement. In August 1997, John was promoted to the Chief Executive Officer of the Goldsboro Family YMCA. The Y has been blessed with John’s leadership throughtout the years. Our Y family is truly excited for him as he enters into a new chapter in life and will be celebrating his years of service in many ways. Our board and transition committee are taking the necessary time to find a leader who not only possesses talent and passion such as John’s, but a leader who is the best fit for our community, organization, and vision. We congratulate John on his retirement, and we wish him the very best on this journey.

NEW MEMBERSHIP RATES With the Y, you’re not just a member of a facility; you’re part of a cause. With a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, improving health and well-being, and giving back and supporting our neighbors, the Y gives you and your community the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. We are a community with an everyday mission to help you achieve a balance of spirit, mind and body. We do that by encouraging good health and fostering connections with new and old friends through sports, fun and shared interests. In order to keep up with the rising costs of maintaining a facility and our programs in the current economy, it is time for our annual dues increase. On September 1 single person memberships will increase $1 per month, and household/group memberships $2 per month. Thank you for your understanding and continual support as we make these adjustments! 3

YOUTH TRIATHLON HIGHLIGHTS

On June 30, 2018 we had 42 youth give it their all, and walk away smiling. It was a morning full of swimming, biking and running in and around the Goldsboro Familiy YMCA. A pool party followed for all of the participants. Our Youth Triathlon was a huge success, very much in part to the sponsors below. We couldn’t have done it without their help. Looking forward to seeing you all next year!

Y STORIES My son, Skylar, age 4 has been in a few daycares before attending the YMCA Preschool. He never liked going to “school” and cried everytime I left him. I also never felt secure with those facilities. When we found the YMCA Preschool, I immediately liked the security, morality, and values the YMCA strives towards. Skylar fell in love with the center and all of his teachers. He looks forward to school now and is always so happy to be there. He looks up to his teachers, and has grown emotionally, spiritually and educationally at the preschool. He has also made friendships with fellow students that has extended outside of preschool. We love all of the staff and can feel the care, love, and concern the staff has for the kids that attend, and we love the curriculum and goals they achieve with the kids. Skylar always waves “hello” or”bye” whenever we pass the preschool. To us, it’s truly the best daycare around!
