GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.

Together, we’ve started serving dinners at the Haven, presenting Current Events during ghU, and working with GlobalGiving to raise funds. Along the way, we’ve enjoyed tremendous campaign success, learned more about KWAT, and grown closer as a chapter. Thanks for being such a great group! To our staff: Thanks for helping with campaigns and leading ghU! From organizing our Benefit Dinner, to delivering balloons for Valentines Day, manning tables for crepes, recruiting students for World Day of Social Justice, and tie dying, your effort and excitement has been invaluable. About Us GlobeMed at Dartmouth was founded in March 2011, and our partnership with the Kachin Women's Association Thailand was launched in August 2011. This year, we raised $9,851.42 to fund a laboratory in Mai Ja Yang, Burma, with a chapter of 51 members. We recently completed our 2nd Annual GROW Trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand. We were awarded Dartmouth’s 2011-2012 Outstanding New Organization, and Dartmouth's 2012-2013 Outstanding Organizational Vision. We are graduating three very extremely supremely accomplished seniors this year: Andy Zureick, Angela Gauthier, and Leigh Ann Humphries.

Our Partnership Kachin Women's Association Thailand Chiang Mai, Thailand Population: 16,000
The Burmese military regime has waged several decades of armed conflict with regional ethnic minorities seeking autonomy, including the Kachin. Although the Kachin Independence Army negotiated a ceasefire with the junta in 1994, oppression and strife at the hands of the military regime have persisted. The Kachin have yet to realize economic and social freedoms; instead, the junta has exploited the natural resources prevalent in the Kachin state without regard for the health and well-being of the Kachin people. As such, the Kachin have been forced to flee to neighboring countries, especially Thailand, to seek refuge.

In Burma, the military regime has been in power for several decades, which has led to conflict with ethnic minorities including the Kachin people and Kachin Independence Army in northern Burma. Mismanagement of the economy by the ruling military has made it very difficult for Kachin men and women to survive. As a result, the Kachin people have fled their homes into bordering countries, mainly China and Thailand. Increased social and economic problems combined with increased numbers of Kachin people coming to Thailand in the 1990s motivated KWAT to form on September 9, 1999, specifically to help Kachin women both in Burma and Thailand. Since then, KWAT has formed and maintained six main programs: Health, Anti-Trafficking, Documentation and Research, Migrant Worker, Income Generation, and Capacity Building. KWAT's partnership with GlobeMed at Dartmouth started in 2011, and our chapter has greatly enjoyed working with Seng Mai and the Migrant Worker Program.
KEY FACT: Burma’s tuberculosis prevalence rate is 3 times higher than the global average (2011). KEY FACT: In Burma, the life expectancy at birth is 65 years old (2012).
A Message from our Partner Kachin Women's Association Thailand Friends of GlobeMed at Dartmouth College: This is our second year working with Globemed, and we gained more experiences. This year’s project is very unique for us because in the KWAT health program, this is the ďŹ rst time that we had the chance to set up a laboratory. We wanted to set it up around April-May 2013, but because of the civil war situation in our area, we had to postpone our plans. However, delaying the set up made it better for us because now we have a plan to cooperate with the Maijayang hospital, which is owned by the Kachin Independent Organization. Our organization is allowed to use the lab room in the hospital, and we will bring our own lab materials there and operate it by ourselves. Thus, we believe it will make our lab more useful for our communities. In the Kachin State, there are over 100,000 Kachin internally displaced people, and in our lab area, there are over 20,000 Kachin IDPs. to construct a laboratory to test refugees for HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis
Why capacity building? Crowded living conditions, insufficient food and nutrition, lack of clean water, and poor sanitation and hygiene cause increased rates of illness among Internally Displaced Persons. Because of this, KWAT’s clinic will set up a laboratory to take care of and treat all patients more effectively, especially if they have contracted HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. The laboratory would protect health care workers from contracting these diseases and enable them to provide early support for pregnant women suffering from these conditions.

This year, we funded a laboratory in a hospital located in Mai Ja Yang, Burma, that can test refugees for HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. The lab will include giemsa stain to detect malaria, a VDRI machine for syphilis, glucose tests, a blood test machine, methanol, HIV tests, and a refrigerator to store supplies. The community is deeply in need of a laboratory that can test for infectious diseases so it can care for the people suffering from these conditions and prevent more people from contracting them. The project has the potential to impact 20,000 people, the number of people living in Mai Ja Yang and the neighboring Laiza region.

Crepes for KWAT
Our most successful and popular recurring campaign! During midterms and finals, we set up a table in the library and made crepes-to-order for anyone wanting a fresh study break snack! With toppings such as fresh strawberries, bananas, and nutella, GlobeMed crepes became very popular!
Halloween Cupcake & Pie Delivery
For two days near Halloween, GlobeMed members delivered cupcakes and pumpkin pie across campus.
Valentine’s Day Balloon Delivery
On Valentine's Day 2013, students ordered balloons to be sent to their friends or loved ones with messages that were inside the balloons. GlobeMed members delivered 151 balloons across campus while spreading Valentine's Day cheer and awareness for KWAT.

Pre-Med Advising Raffle
We held a successful raffle targeting students who were preparing to apply to medical school. The raffle included MCAT prep books and advising services from senior pre-med students.

Finals Spa Therapy Raffle
During fall term finals period, we held a successful raffle that consisted of restaurant gift certificates, manicure/pedicure at local spa, and clothing store gift cards.

Tie Dye for Health
During the spring, we held a ice cream social and do-it-yourself tie dye open to campus. Students and parents were able to enjoy delicious ice cream and make colorful tie dye shirts while also supporting KWAT.

From April 15th to May 12, 2013, GlobeMed members encouraged family and friends to send Mother's Day cards with donations on GlobalGiving.

Since 2011, GlobeMed at Dartmouth has raised a total of $15,579.82 to support KWAT's laboratory and a reproductive health training class.
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health. This year we focused on global health from a multidisciplinary approach. We integrated the current issues of government, politics, and finance to explore the realm of healthcare in different countries. From debating the benefits and drawbacks of health care systems in Burma, Singapore, Canada, and USA to examining the influence of the foreign powers, we strove to understand the quality of healthcare offered around the world. Through small group discussions and activities, we delved into the intricacies and problems of healthcare among the impoverished, especially the refugees. Our discussions of the issues were greatly augmented by guest speakers and mini-ghU, short ghU presentations designed by our staff members based on their own experiences and passions in global health. To further facilitate our conversations and increase our general knowledge, we instituted a “Current Events” program in which staff members presented a recent news article related to global health and their own interests. In addition to pondering weighty topics, we took some time to strengthen our connection with our partners in Burma. Through GROW trip anecdotes, cultural presentations on individuals in Burma, and a movie screening of BurmaVJ with real footage of the conflict in the area, we brought our members closer to our partners, virtually. As we continue to grow, we hope to continue the momentum next year.

Benefit for Burma dinner to listen to a talk given by Dr. Kathleen Allden about her travels and work in Burma as the director of the Burma Border Projects. Burma VJ: A Dinner and a Documentary February 25, 2013
60 attendees; The film-screening of Burma VJ explored the conflict in Burma through the camera lens of Burmese video journalists. The footage allowed the attendees to reflect on the ongoing conflict.
Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.

Our community building efforts were targeted toward facilitating bonding within our meetings. We set aside time during each meeting for different icebreaker games, discussions, and reflections, ensuring that all members were involved and would get to know each other. In addition, we had a couple of E-board retreats, which enabled the E-board to bond and plan out how to run our meetings for the remainder of the term. We also started working with a homeless shelter called The Haven in Hanover, NH, which enabled our chapter to not only bond with each other, but develop a connection with a local partner and give back within the Upper Valley area. Finally, we ended our year with a Finals Study Break event, giving us one last chance to spend time together before leaving campus.

During their time in Thailand, the GROW interns helped KWAT develop external communications resources, such as an informational brochure and an annual report and conducted research to support the development of a health curriculum for Kachin refugees.
Through Grassroots Onsite Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.

2013 Summit The student momentum The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.

We plan on focusing heavily on community building and ghU in order to better establish the relations we have within the chapter. We have established our presence a strong global health group on campus in terms of fundraising and to continue to strive for improvement, we want to educate oursevles within our chapter to better advocate for global health equity. We want to continue expanding our project goals to raise money for KWAT while simultaneously expanding our educational reach on Dartmouth's campus. We especially want to collaborate with other global health groups on campus to have a large event bringing together the huge community we have on our campus. Within the network, we would like to continue collaborating with other chapters to find best practices while also being able to meet with some of the local chapters. We are in the process of talking to GlobeMed at Middlebury and continue to reinforce relations with the rest of our network.
