Message from

The Co-Presidents Dear Friends, It has been a great year for GlobeMed at Northwestern. Through our campaigns and individual fundraising, we were able to send $12,500 to help support and supply materials and workers to our partner’s health clinic. This was the fifth year of our partnership with the Adonai Child Development Centre in Namugoga, Uganda. Through Skype calls, photos, videos, and stories from the GROW team, we were able to create a stronger bond between the work we do on campus and the Adonai Center. Highlights of the year include a successful holiday sweater sale in November, plenty of thought-provoking discussions about global health issues, and introducing a number of engaged new chapter members to GlobeMed. We are proud of all that we have accomplished this year, and commend the hard work of everyone involved in the chapter. We look forward to seeing the continued growth of the chapter as well as the continued growth of the entire GlobeMed network as a whole. Sincerely, Matt Dulas and Nadia Ghazali 2016-2017 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at Northwestern

About our Chapter

[GlobeMed at Northwestern] GlobeMed at Northwestern partnered with the Adonai Child Development Centre in Namugoga, Uganda in 2012. Over the past four years, we have led GROW trips and have seen the installation of water purification systems and water tanks that provide clean, accessible water for hundreds of surrounding individuals in the community. Since 2015, we have supported Adonai in establishing a health center that provides basic and maternal medical support for the children of the Adonai Centre and the Namugoga community at large. We are so excited to continue to support Adonai Centre programs and work together with its staff to achieve our joint goal of self-sustainability and growth for the entire Namugoga community.

since our founding in 2007, our chapter has grown to over 35 members

since partnering with the Adonai Child Development Centre in 2012, our chapter has raised over $40,000

KEY FACT: The Adonai Child Development Centre has over 350 students!

Our Partnership The Adonai Child Development Centre

Founded in 2005, The Adonai Child Development Centre was founded in 2005 by Pastor Aloysious Luswata, and his wife, Abby to provide for the needs of children affected by the HIV/AIDS crisis and civil unrest. Today, the Centre has grown into a vital part of the community and consists of not only a school, but also a health center that was funded with the help of GlobeMed at Northwestern.

Namugoga, Uganda Population: 1,000 Namugoga is located in the Wakiso district in Uganda, and is approximately 16 kilometers from the nation’s capital, Kampala. Toward the end of the twentieth century, Uganda found itself ravaged by the HIV/AIDS pandemic and ongoing internal conflict. Resulting from this unrest was the emergence of nearly 880,000 orphans in the year 2000. Though the quiet village of Namugoga remained untouched by conflict, by no means, was it immune to the devastation and its effects. Abandoned and orphaned children migrating from the north turn to slum life on the outskirts of major cities to escape war-torn areas. These children are often overlooked by aid agencies, which cannot provide resources for these relatively stable areas.

Our Project Key Fact: The support from GlobeMed at Northwestern in 2016-2017 will allow the medical center at Adonai to purchase an ultrasound machine.

The Adonai Medical Centre Since 2015, we have assisted Adonai in developing its Medical Centre. This project reaches beyond the children of Adonai to assist Namugoga residents of all ages with basic and maternal medical care. The $12,500 in funds we have raised over the past year will go towards medical equipment and health staff salaries.

3rd Annual Benefit Dinner

GlobeMed at Northwestern’s annual ugly holiday sweater sale was a huge success! Northwestern students got decked out in atrocious holiday sweaters preparing them for the holidays and helped raise money for the Adonai Child Development Centre!

For the third time, GlobeMed at Northwestern had its annual benefit dinner. There was delicious pad thai, and we had the opportunity to hear inspiring and informative speeches from GlobeMed’s very own Brittany Zelch and Brendan Allen from G4 Alliance.

globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.

KEY QUESTIONS WE ASKED THIS YEAR

What healthcare systems provide the best outcomes for patients? ghUs have been a crucial component of our chapter's cohesiveness and progress this year, both as a powerful, interactive tool for understanding domestic and international global health issues and as a community-building tool for our chapter. This year, our ghUs focused on international and domestic healthcare systems, reproductive health, US political issues, poverty simulations, and the opioid epidemic, among several other topics. By engaging with these topics and developing our understanding of global health issues, members are able share their knowledge and cultivate new perspectives on health and social justice. Nadia Ghazali, ghU Coordinator, 2015-2016

What can we do to advocate for political causes we care about?

How can environmental factors shape health outcomes?

What can be done to aid the national opioid epidemic?

What political and public health factors caused instability in Uganda?

globalhealthU Syrian Refugee Health Roundtable We invited Sufyan Sohel (CAIR), Mufaddal Hamadeh (Syrian American Medical Society) to our campus to speak about their work providing legal and medical services to refugees both locally and abroad. Students enjoyed dinner and a chance to ask questions about refugee rights and needs and learned about we can do to help.

The State of Reproductive Justice GlobeMed at NU hosted a panel on current reproductive health care issues in collaboration with other Northwestern student groups.

Year in Review ghU For our final ghU of the 2015-2016 school year, we asked seniors to share their experiences during their time in GlobeMed at NU. We also reflected on all the information we have learned at our chapter meetings over the past year.

World Day of Social Justice February 20, 2017

Engaging students to take action and advocate for what they believe in! For the World Day of Social Justice, GlobeMed at Northwestern engaged the Northwestern community and helped connect students with their political representatives so that they could take action and advocate for social causes they believed in. GlobeMed members manned a booth, answered questions from students, and helped them contact and write to their representatives, as well as informed the student body about current, relevant social justice and global health issues.

2017 Summit

Leading Bravely: Finding Strength in Diversity The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit catalyzes mutual learning and collaboration between 300 students and leaders from a variety of health-related sectors. It provides delegates with the space to form relationships grounded in values of social justice and health equity.

“Summit was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had while in GlobeMed. It was so fun to meet so many passionate people from GlobeMed chapters all across the country. I learned so much from all the people I met, and made connections that I know will last!”

GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work

Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.

This year on GROW, the team focused on spending time at Adonai and the health center to build relationships, and help the staff with technical skills. The GROW team facilitated the use of social media, conducted computer training sessions, taught the staff how to use various computer programs, and helped them transition to electronic files. Additionally, the GROW team set the foundation for future community outreach in the Namugoga community.

"GROW was an amazing opportunity to learn about everything Adonai does to be a leader in its community's health and economic development. This year, not only were we able to spend time at the medical centre, which GlobeMed is strongly tied to, but we were also able to get to know the teachers and administrative staff who really emblemize Adonai's ambitious missions and values." -- Christina Shehata ‘19

Our Future

Dear Friends,

This has been a year of many successes and learning experiences for GlobeMed at Northwestern, and we are looking forward to our goals for the future of our organization. Next year, we plan to improve chapter engagement through increased recruitment and community building activities. As a measure to increase our local engagement and give chapter members larger roles in our work, we plan to establish a volunteering partnership with a local organization in the coming year. With our recently completed GROW trip, we have strengthened our relationship with the Adonai Centre and considered ways provide the most beneficial services and information to our partner. As requested from staff at Adonai, we plan to do community outreach programs during next year’s trip for increased engagement with the Namugoga community. To foster the relationship between our local chapter members and our partner organization, we plan to share media and Adonai staff profiles with Northwestern students. In the coming year, we hope to raise more money for Adonai by creating one new campaign and focusing more on grant writing as a form of fundraising. We also hope to increase our attendance and profits during our Benefit Dinner and Individual Giving campaign. To improve our online presence, we have been updating our GlobeMed website and posting more frequently on our social media platforms. We are planning to create a quarterly newsletter to update friends of GlobeMed on our internal and external operations. To increase our campus presence, we plan to host a public panel on with local experts on global health and social justice issues each quarter. We are very excited to put these goals into practice over the coming year to improve GlobeMed at Northwestern.

Sincerely, Nadia Ghazali and Matt Dulas 2016-2017 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at Northwestern
