Christmas in Westport Westport is a pretty town with beautiful churches, quaint avenues, tranquil forest walks and a Georgian town centre. Local landmarks include the Clew Bay Heritage Centre, situated in the scenic Quay area and where the region’s history is traced through artefacts and photographs. Another attraction is stunning Westport House. Dubbed Ireland’s most beautiful historic mansion, it is home to art and antiques and set amidst picturesque parkland with lakes and terraces. Out on our travels, we take in quirky Galway and misty Achill Island.
Your Holiday Itinerary Saturday. We head to Cairnryan for our ferry crossing to Ireland then continue to the Westport Hotel & Spa. Settle in or explore before dinner. Christmas Eve. We venture out to the gorgeous harbour town of Galway, home to a Latin Quarter with twisting lanes and quirky cafes as well as Eyre Square – also known as the John F Kennedy Memorial Park. After dinner this evening there is an option to join a coach trip to St Mary’s Church for Christmas Mass. Mulled wine and mince pies will be served upon return. Enjoy music in the bar till late. Grand Tour of Ireland 2018 Our Irish adventure gets underway with a feast for the senses at the Irish National Stud & Japanese Gardens before we explore the hidden treasure of splendid Huntington Castle. Next up is Waterford, a thousand-year-old city with a medieval flavour and a lively waterfront. Cobh beckons, the last port of call for the tragic Titanic and where we re-live its ill-fated voyage. We sail to Spike Island, explore Cork, hop aboard a jaunting car in Killarney, step back through time at Bunratty Castle & Folk Park then cruise on the River Shannon to Athlone - a gorgeous gem at the very heart of Ireland and a fitting final treat on our Emerald Isle extravaganza!
Your Holiday Itinerary Day One. We journey to Cairnryan for our ferry to Ireland then onwards to our overnight hotel. Day Two. Our first treat today is a visit to the Irish National Stud & Japanese Gardens, home to beautiful horses and flower-filled parkland. We continue to Huntington Castle, one of Ireland’s hidden treasures and where we enjoy a guided tour of the sumptuously furnished rooms, still lived in by descendants of the original owners! From here we continue to Waterford and check into well-appointed Treacys Hotel for the next two nights. Day Three. This morning we get our bearings with a guided walking tour of Waterford before popping into Waterford Crystal Visitor Centre. Free time to continue sightseeing in the afternoon. Day Four. We venture forth to Cobh, the last stop for the ill-fated Titanic. Here we take in a guided walking tour of the town and harbour, reliving the tragic liner’s story where the passengers embarked at the Port of Cork. In the afternoon, we hop aboard a ferry for the short crossing to Spike Island where we enjoy a guided tour of the isle with its sixth century monastery and star shaped fortress. Afterwards, we head to Cork and check into the four star Vienna Woods Hotel for two nights.
Day Five. Look forward to a guided tour of Cork followed by free time to continue exploring at your own pace. Day Six. Another highlight as we travel to Killarney for a touch of nostalgia in the form of a delightful trip on a traditional jaunting car. From here, we continue to the splendid Oak Wood Hotel in the heart of Shannon for our two night stay. Day Seven. Treats keep coming with a visit to the nearby attraction of Bunratty Castle & Folk Park - an enchanting recreation of a nineteenth century village with a school, post office and pub. Day Eight. Today we board our boat and cruise the mighty River Shannon, stepping ashore in Athlone, where you’ll have free time to enjoy this enchanting town. From here, it’s onwards to our overnight hotel for dinner. Day Nine. After breakfast, we head for our ferry home.
