MEET YOUR 2016 POWER IN PURPLE AMBASSADORS

Josh Carpenter

Hi, my name is Josh Carpenter and I am a Galesburg native who has returned home to practice medicine as a Hospitalist for OSF St Mary’s Medical Center where I take care of both pediatrics and adults. I am also a Flight Surgeon at the 182d Medical Group for the Peoria Air National Guard where I have served for 17 years providing care to our countries greatest aviators and airmen. Professionally, there are very few days that go by where I don’t see how cancer has affected the lives of my patients and their family’s. Personally, I have been affected by cancer diagnoses in both my Mother and my Father. I have seen the effects of cutting edge treatment of my parents with both of them undergoing therapy that wasn’t even available when I started my medical school career. I can tell you both as a clinician and as a Son that the first moments, hours and days following a diagnosis are full of anxiety and questions. Sometimes those questions are about the diagnosis and treatment that is available but all to often in Knox County those questions include “how will I be able to afford to get to my treatment and specialists” or “how can I pursue a treatment if it isn’t offered in my area” and this is where the American Cancer Society really shines and why I have made a commitment to Power in Purple. In addition to the research that they are conducting to try to make Cancer a disease of the past they also have the Hope Lodge Program that provides free lodging in 31 cities with cutting edge cancer treatment programs as well as contracted with hotels to offer steeply discounted rates in countless other cities. They also provide rides to and from treatment, even if that treatment is not in our local community to ensure that everyone is getting life saving treatment. I want to invite you to show your support by donating to this great cause and also joining me in wearing purple as I deploy with my unit in the Air National Guard to bring attention to this important organization.
