Letter from the Executive Director Hello Chamber Members! As we enter this season of Thanksgiving, I would like to spend a few moments focusing on all of you: our Chamber Members. It’s you, our members, that make Galesburg the home it is. Your businesses give visitors a place to lay their head, residents someone to call when their car breaks down, and students a place for a cup of coffee while they do their homework. It is all of you who employ our community and bring investment into our town. As employees, you are the engine behind the business. You file the taxes, greet the guests, market the sales, and manage the plant. You are the movers and the shakers. You donate, volunteer, and bend your expertise at every turn. On behalf of the Chamber and our community, thank you! Thank you for all of your hard work and for building up our community each and every day. We hope you will all join us this year for our annual Thanksgiving Luncheon. I will be taking a moment to share what I’m thankful for, and we will come together to honor someone in this community for their dedication and service to Galesburg. I hope to see all of you there! Happy Thanksgiving, Galesburg! Executive Direcctor jlinder@galesburg.org

His skills also include strong proficiency in drafting technical details for construction in Building Information Modeling (BIM), and Computer-Aided Drafting software. Our Welcome Center at 2163 East Main Street has seen a lot of different people over the years. There have been people from all over the world stopping in for a break, information, good conversation and a souvenir or two. People unfamiliar with our community and its history often leave amazed, enlightened and surprised. Sometimes, visitors surprise me! I worked the Welcome Center on a Sunday in October during our usual 11am to 3pm hours. When I rolled up to open the doors at 10:45, there was a couple from Arizona waiting to come in and look around. I told them to come right in. To my surprise, the couple was Jim & Judy Hinckley. Jim is an award-winning travel writer who writes articles about Route 66. He was just in Bloomington to give a lecture about his work and his travel blog www.jimhinckleysamerica.com. He and his wife were heading home after a long two weeks on the road. Jim takes the road less traveled. He has written ten books and more than 1000 feature articles for a wide range of publications. He’s been interviewed by Jay Leno and he has won several writing awards. Included in his collection of works is Travel Route 66: A Guide to the History, Sights, and Destinations Along the Main Street of America. “While stretches of the once-glorious road have been paved over or bypassed by the interstates, the journey from Chicago to Santa Monica along the path of the “double six” remains chock-full of unique roadside attractions, spectacular natural landscapes, and fascinating historical landmarks.” Jim and his wife live in Kingman, AZ where he often promotes the Hualapai River Runners, the only 2-day rafting trip in the Grand Canyon. “My first impression of the deserts of Arizona was that I had arrived at the place warned about in Sunday school. Well, that was more than forty years ago and I now find it impossible to imagine living anywhere that isn’t found within the borders of Arizona or New Mexico.,” explains Jim. It was a delight to visit with this couple as we discussed the history of Galesburg. Jim was already very familiar with the famous 5th Lincoln-Douglas Debate at Knox College and our native son Carl Sandburg. I encourage Chamber members to stop by our Welcome Center on East Main Street. In addition to our wonderful collection of travel materials from Illinois and many other states, we have many unique postcards, t-shirts, books and other items to celebrate Galesburg and Knox County. Please follow us on Facebook @gacvb, on Pinterest @galesburgCVB and on Twitter @GalesburgCVB. Find up-to-date information on our website at visitgalesburg.com. If you have a meeting, reunion, wedding or special guest, call Judy Moorehead at 309-343-2485. She will put together Welcome Bags filled with good information about Galesburg and Knox County. Contact her in advance of your event and help her customize your information. Bill Morris Executive Director, Galesburg Area Convention & Visitors Bureau bmorris@visitgalesburg.com

F&M Bank Announces New Logo Galesburg, IL – F&M Bank announces that it will launch a new logo beginning in October 2016. The time has come for a fresh new look and feel across all of our markets. We are very excited to introduce this new look to our clients and the communities we serve. The new logo, which contains the same colors as the current logo, will provide a new modern look for the organization. The new logo symbolizes the connectivity so prevalent in today’s world. It features a forward-moving, upward-facing image consisting of four stylized elements. The first three are green and represent the bank’s positive connection with clients, companies and communities. The fourth, rendered in blue, represents the bank. Our new branding statement, “Aim High. Bank Strong.”, combines the aspirations of our clients with the ability we possess to help them reach their goals. We believe that is what our clients deserve from their bank.

Power In Purple Knox County is a group of community leaders who have come together to help end the fight against cancer. Each Ambassador has accepted the challenge to raise a minimum of $1,000 in four weeks (October 7th - November 4th) . The ambassador who raises the most money will be crowned the 2016 Power In Purple Champion.

Josh Carpenter

Hi, my name is Josh Carpenter and I am a Galesburg native who has returned home to practice medicine as a Hospitalist for OSF St Mary’s Medical Center where I take care of both pediatrics and adults. I am also a Flight Surgeon at the 182d Medical Group for the Peoria Air National Guard where I have served for 17 years providing care to our countries greatest aviators and airmen. Professionally, there are very few days that go by where I don’t see how cancer has affected the lives of my patients and their family’s. Personally, I have been affected by cancer diagnoses in both my Mother and my Father. I have seen the effects of cutting edge treatment of my parents with both of them undergoing therapy that wasn’t even available when I started my medical school career. I can tell you both as a clinician and as a Son that the first moments, hours and days following a diagnosis are full of anxiety and questions. Sometimes those questions are about the diagnosis and treatment that is available but all to often in Knox County those questions include “how will I be able to afford to get to my treatment and specialists” or “how can I pursue a treatment if it isn’t offered in my area” and this is where the American Cancer Society really shines and why I have made a commitment to Power in Purple. In addition to the research that they are conducting to try to make Cancer a disease of the past they also have the Hope Lodge Program that provides free lodging in 31 cities with cutting edge cancer treatment programs as well as contracted with hotels to offer steeply discounted rates in countless other cities. They also provide rides to and from treatment, even if that treatment is not in our local community to ensure that everyone is getting life saving treatment. I want to invite you to show your support by donating to this great cause and also joining me in wearing purple as I deploy with my unit in the Air National Guard to bring attention to this important organization.
