For this month’s newsletter, I want to point out the importance of the Galesburg Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. Our role is to market Galesburg, provide accurate information, book bus tours to our community, advocate for our tourism assets, events and for our county as a whole. Who am I? I am Bill Morris, Executive Director of Tourism and Marketing. In my role as director I handle a myriad of tasks. Let’s break them down. As marketing director I place advertising promoting our community, attractions, events and people. I place advertising using social media, print, radio, television and billboards. I also submit press releases and maintain a good relationship with our many media outlets in the regions. As Executive Director I advocate for our community all over the State of Illinois. Our CVB is a certified member of the Illinois Convention and Visitors Bureau Association. I collaborate with many of my ICCVB colleagues throughout the region and the state. We are in good standings with the Illinois Office of Tourism as well. We receive a Local Tourism and Convention Bureau grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. This grant requires accurate quarterly reports as well as an annual application process and recertification.

I participate in the Western Illinois Amtrak Coalition. This is a coalition of communities including Princeton, Kewanee, Galesburg, Macomb, Quincy and the Quad Cities. The Quad Cities is planning for rail service from Rockford that will connect with our Amtrak corridor in Galesburg. My role on this board has been as the marketing committee chair as well as a lobbyist and advocate for our 2 roundtrip trains, the Carl Sandburg & Illinois Zephyr. I build bridges. I work with many of our local event committees and assets to assist them with marketing, brochures, and funds when deemed necessary. After all, the hotel tax money we receive is to be used to bring visitors to Galesburg. Every dollar I spend brings in a great return. It’s critical that each event and asset provide use with accurate information. We receive thousands of requests of info every year through our Welcome Center, website and social media and by phone. In 2014 our Economic Impact of Domestic Travel on Illinois in Knox was $73.7 million dollars. That’s 6.9% higher than in 2013. We expect an even bigger impact in the 2015 report from the Illinois Office of Tourism. This money supports 480 jobs in Knox County. The overall impact from Tourism in Illinois saves the taxpayer about $1,300 a year. I work with the Galesburg Lodging and Restaurant

Association to provide accurate information about rooms available, restaurants and shopping. In that capacity, I help organize Taste of Galesburg. This one event brings about 7,000 people to the downtown area every July. Taste is a collaboration between GLRA, GBA & the Galesburg Area CVB. It involves hundreds of volunteers. One of the assets I am assisting is the Carl Sandburg State Historic Site. Left to its own devises, this government funded site would not be open. Through lobbying and advocacy I have worked with Rep. Don Moffitt, Sen. John Sullivan, Sen. Darin LaHood and the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association to secure a Site Interpreter. Due to that hard work, the Sandburg Site has remained open all year. In that vein, I joined the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association Board and advocated for an endowment to assist the site. A strong endowment will provide leverage with the State of Illinois. Thanks to the Galesburg Community Foundation and the Endowment Match Program, the CSSHSA is well on its way to building a strong endowment.

My Employees are Jerry Wood and Judy Moorehead. Jerry is the Tourism Associate at the Welcome Center. Her job includes collecting important data about room nights sold, information inquiry, distribution of local information around the state, nation and the world. She also coordinates our group of volunteers that greet visitors on the weekends and provide “step-on guide” services for motor coaches visiting our area. She is also the first face visitors see when they visit our Welcome Center. As an intangible, Jerry has assisted the Galesburg Lodging and Restaurant Association with secretarial and accounting services. Jerry has scheduled their bi-monthly meetings and worked closely with Ryan Cochran and other members of the GLRA. She also assisted the Knox County Scenic Drive with marketing and manpower of the years.
Jerry organized the Scarecrow Festival for many years as well on her own time. Unfortunately, Jerry is in poor health right now. After struggling to return to work due to painful back surgery, she contracted an infection in her heart and suffered a stroke. We are praying for her because she has been such a wonderful advocate for tourism in Knox County. Judy Moorehead is the Tourism Sales Associate at the Welcome Center. She spends time contacting and booking tour operators, building itineraries for motor coaches and distributing information to tour operators across the country. In addition, Judy fills Welcome Bags and VIP bags for a wide range of groups visiting our community. Judy processes all the information we receive from around the state

and the U. S. so we can provide up-to-date information for visitors. As part of her duties, Judy coordinates the vendors for Galesburg Railroad Days. This event brings in over 10,000 visitors each year. Our wonderful Welcome Center is more than a tourist information center. It is a museum filled with history about Galesburg, Abe Lincoln, Carl Sandburg, Ron & Nancy Reagan, the Underground Railroad, our railroad heritage and many little tidbits that delight visitors from all over the world. We work hard to put Galesburg’s best foot forward. I’m proud to have had the opportunity to cheerlead for this wonderful and unique city on the prairie. Thank you Chamber community for giving me the chance to do this job I love so much.
