The Galesburg Public Library Foundation, a 503c3 not for profit foundation, was founded in 2007 to ensure Galesburg would always have a quality public library to serve our community. Our mission is to "enhance library rescues and services," a task which today includes leading a community wide fund raising effort to build a much needed new Library.

Vice President, Martin Reichel, Treasurer, and Jenny Bredemeier, Secretary. Our Board includes 10 persons who reflect the diversity of our Galesburg community. For more information, contact Foundation@galesburglibrary. org

The Foundation receives donations, provides funds to the Library, and promotes the Library's charitable, educational, and cultural purposes. The Foundation's support to the Library is not intended to replace the Library's funding, which is accomplished through property tax assessments. The funds raised will be used to enhance the services of the Library and in the next several years, to build the Library of our community's future. Our officers are Terry Bruner, President; Tom Foley, MODERN WOODMEN PARK WINS “BEST OF THE BALLPARKS” Modern Woodmen Park has been voted the “Best of the Ballparks” in Class-A baseball by fans and readers of Ballpark Digest, which held a bracketed online voting competition of all 30 Class-A venues across the country over the past two weeks. Ballpark Digest has recognized Modern Woodmen Park four times in the last seven seasons for Best Ballpark Improvement, most recently, in 2014 for the addition of the first Ferris wheel inside a minor league ballpark. Recently, readers of USA TODAY and 10Best.com, voted Modern Woodmen Park as the Best Minor League Ballpark in an online contest. The ballpark, which opened in 1931 as Davenport Municipal Stadium and was known as John O'Donnell Stadium from 1971 to 2007, is the oldest stadium used continuously by a current Minor League Baseball team for more than 50 years. The current Midwest League franchise has played in it since 1960, and nearly eight million fans have passed through its gates in that time. The River Bandits and Modern Woodmen Park have also been recognized several times nationally in recent seasons. The River Bandits' home cap was voted the best in all of Class-A baseball, and in a Sporting News contest, the team's name was voted as one of the top eight in all of Minor League Baseball. The team's logo was also recently voted among the top eight - and the best in the Midwest League - in Baseball America's Logo Mania. In May, Modern Woodmen Park's R.I.A. Federal Credit Union Hon. Lane Evans Patriot Seats were voted the No. 2 Best Seats at any minor league ballpark in the country - and the top view of any ballpark at the Class-A and short season level - by fans on MiLB.com

While I was out of the office earlier this week, Diane Stickle, an organizer for the National Stearman Fly-In, stopped by the Welcome Center to drop off the new Stearman Fly-In posters for this year’s event in September. It shows a Steaman on the tarmac in Galesburg with a rainbow and a reflection of the plane in a rain puddle.

I was struck by the wonderful detail of the poster. I decided to text Diane and ask about the artist, Frank Schaufler. She told me Frank, from Hilton, NY, is a fascinating individual. “I got interested in aviation in the early 1970s after reading several books on World War I aircraft,” Frank explains. “Up to that time, all I ever did was penand-ink drawings. When asked to do a one-man show in Ridgefield, Conn., I combined my interest in the colorful paint schemes of those early aircraft with the project and bought my first paint and brushes. I’ve never had an art lesson in my life, so everything I’ve done since then has been a work in progress.” He designed the nose art on the B-17 in the 1990 movie Memphis Belle; the postal commemorative cachet and cancellations for this year’s 90th anniversary of U.S. Airmail.

The shading and color scheme are beautiful, too. This poster, and artist, bears a striking resemblance to the work of Ron Hatch of Knoxville. His passion is railroad machinery. He has been drawing since he was old enough to hold a pencil. Grade school saw a few attempts with oil painting, but in high school and the discovery of acrylic paints he started to hit his stride. Selftaught for the most part, his artwork soon merged with his fascination with railroads. One of his first jobs was as an illustrator for Burlington Northern’ s Safety & Rules Division at the St. Paul home office. Ron’s attention to detail is clear in all of the posters he has designed for Railroad Days. He often captures moments from the past as if they were photographs. Ron has been designing the Railroad Days poster since 1994. We have all the RR Days posters displayed at the Galesburg Welcome Center. We have a couple of months until the Stearman fill the skies over Knox County. Until then, enjoy the 163rd Knox County Fair at the Fairgrounds from July 15 – 18. There will be a lot to see from Illinois’ oldest running County Fair. For a complete list of Grandstand events go to http://www.knoxfair. com.

According to Diane, the Stearman Biplane depicted on the poster “was rebuilt in Galesburg several years ago by Dan Haas & Bob Ronk. It won several awards at Oshkosh & is now owned by a man in Minnesota.” I find the detail to be remarkable.

On July 23rd make room for the Taste of Galesburg. This downtown institution is organized by the Galesburg Business Association and the Galesburg Lodging and Restaurant Association. It features delicious food from over 20 local restaurants. Bier Garten music will be provided by 28 Days from

Chicago. The event is from 4 pm to 10:30 pm. As always, there will be plenty to do for kids and adults. Taste of Galesburg is a great segue into the Galesburg Balloon Race on July 24 to 26 at Lake Storey. Since 2000 The Great Balloon Race has called Galesburg, Illinois its home. Set in the beautiful surroundings of Lake Storey, it has played host to more than 30 majestic hot air balloons each year. Pilots from across the country have traveled to this event to compete in the balloon competition and to share their balloons and stories with families from around the region. The evening glow of balloons has been a local favorite. Watching them light up as the sun fades into the west has always been a highlight.
