EDITOR'S LETTER

dear... 3… 2… 1… Happy New Year Framework girls! From the moment our 2013 countdown began, I was filled with an overwhelming excitement for the year ahead. Refreshed after the holidays, this January brings new opportunities and a clean slate. I’ve mentally discarded anything dragging me down from last year, and have some big goals going forward. It’s only fitting then that our first issue of 2013 feature a young woman whose passion and drive match her own lofty goals. We spent an afternoon with Shaw TV’s Mana Mansour, who shared her journey to a dream job and let us poke around her beautiful Kitsilano home. We’re quite convinced Miss Mansour could become the next Oprah Winfrey—an aspiration she’s not afraid to share! Laughing over dating mishaps, pulling funny faces, and making mocktails, Mana is quick to goof around and put everyone at ease. Now, as the days get longer, I wish you all a happy, healthy, laughterfilled January. Whichever way you choose to beat the winter blues, I’m encouraging you to take a leap and

build your empire. Thank you for joining the Framework family this year! xo,

BOOK CLUB

WHEN STYLE MEETS SCANDAL

EVERY MONTH WE CHOOSE THREE MUST-READ BOOKS, FROM RECENT RELEASES TO OLD FAVOURITES, THAT WOULD FIT INTO ANY FRAMEWORK GIRL’S BOOK CLUB. IT’S JUST ONE MORE EXCUSE TO GET TOGETHER WITH FRIENDS OVER SWEET TREATS AND COCKTAILS!

by Sara Constantineau

This month’s titles showcase three artistic women

who broke society’s rules to some degree, whether through their style, their behaviour, or what they represented. They will also all be remembered for their creativity, and artistic legacy. With personal photos and intimate anecdotes, these three biographies offer a multi-faceted look at these iconic women, so you can go beyond the rumours, speculation, and tabloid headlines.

AMY, MY DAUGHTER BY MITCH WINEHOUSE

4/5

THE STORY

This memoir looks at the life of Amy Winehouse through the eyes of her devoted father, from her childhood spent seeking attention to her massive musical success and untimely death at the age of 27. Fraught with very public substance abuse issues and damaging relationships, her father tells another side of her life that reveals Amy’s kindness and vulnerability in the face of fame.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

It is heartbreaking to see someone’s talent overshadowed by their addiction, and this story communicates the pain that only a parent can feel when their child is lost. It offers another side to the shocking news stories that threatened to swallow Amy’s career, and celebrates her immense contribution to music that will never be forgotten.

THE MAKING OF THE AFRICAN QUEEN

3.5 / 5

BY KATHARINE HEPBURN

THE STORY

Katharine Hepburn receives a script, accepts a part, and finds herself in a small cottage on the other side of the world. In her own playful words, she recounts the trials and tribulations of the unique on-location shoot for The African Queen. Whether she is exploring the Congo, making new friends, or turning in an Oscarworthy performance, Hepburn always stays true to herself.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

A must-read for fans of the film, Hepburn’s first book touches on everything from Bogie and Bacall’s adorable marriage to her roughing-it beauty routine and what it’s like to age under the spotlight. This first-person account also inadvertently offers another level of social commentary; 1950s imperialist attitudes permeate her story, which begs an interesting discussion about Hollywood’s influence and power on a global scale.

BEST FOR: OLD HOLLYWOOD LOVERS WHO WANT A PEEK BEHIND THE VELVET CURTAIN

SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY: COCO CHANEL'S SECRET WAR

3/5

BY HAL VAUGHAN

THE STORY

From her humble beginnings in a Catholic convent to her flourishing career during the jazz age and beyond, this historical biography traces the roots of Coco Chanel and explores her questionable dalliances during World War II. What was once just a rumor, her involvement with Nazism becomes more substantial as the compelling evidence of her espionage pours in.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

This biography has the kind of drama and intrigue that proves truth is stranger than fiction. Well-researched and extremely detailed, the prose style occasionally drags down the otherwise fascinating story, but the investigation into the shady, worldchanging dealings of fashion’s biggest name is worth the read.

FRAMEWORK MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 2013

The holidays have been hard on your skin – it's time to stash the glitter, bronzer, and black liner (at least for a little while) and put your freshest face forward, with this step-by-step guide to looking awake, glowing, and renewed for 2013! 1. BRIGHT EYES

After moisturizing, apply an undereye brightener with an orange tint, which counteracts purple eye bags. Lightly pat the brightener with your finger to blend, being gentle with the delicate skin around your eye. PRODUCT: Bourjois Touche Healthy Mix Illuminating Brush Concealer WHY WE LOVE IT: This gentle brightener comes in a quick-twist tube for a super easy application.

2. GEOMETRY LESSON

Here's a celebrity makeup secret for looking perfectly polished and wide awake: with a concealer one or two shades lighter than your skin, highlight the triangle area formed from each corner of your eye to the side of your nostril. This simple step effortlessly brightens up your whole face! PRODUCT: Bourjois Healthy Mix Correcting Concealer WHY WE LOVE IT: This oil-free concealer is virtually undetectable and blends like a dream.

3. SMOOTH CANVAS

Use a stippling brush to lightly apply a liquid foundation to the rest of your face. Liquid foundation with soothing botanicals will give you a fresh, dewy glow, rather than the heavy matte finish of a cream or dry look of a powder. PRODUCT: Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Gel Foundation WHY WE LOVE IT: This foundation serves up to 16 hours of even, revived complexion, thanks to the vitamin-rich fruit therapy of lychee, goji berries, and pomegranate.

4. GET CHEEKY

Bring that fresh-from-the-outdoors glow into your face with a shimmery pink blush. Rather than applying on the apples of the cheeks, swirl the blush onto your cheekbones and back towards the temple for an instant facelift. PRODUCT: Bourjois Blush in 95 Rose de Jaspe WHY WE LOVE IT: This beautiful shade is paraben free, and lightly scented with a hint of real rose essential oil.

TOOLKIT:

STIPPLING BRUSH (STEP 3), BLUSH BRUSH (STEP 4), & EYELASH CURLER (STEP 5). framework

19

5. SOFTLY DOES IT

Make your long, fluttery lashes pop by skipping on the eyeshadow and liner. First use a lash curler, and then apply a black volumizing mascara to the upper lashes. Use a brown mascara on the lower lashes to add extra dimension while keeping the look soft. PRODUCT: L'Oréal Voluminous Mascara (Curved Brush) in black WHY WE LOVE IT: This classic mascara catches every lash without clumping, and the curved brush adds extra curl.

6. DOUBLE DUTY

The finishing touch – for full, soft lips, choose a moisturizing lip balm with a berry or rose tint that complements your blush colour. PRODUCT: Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Sugar Rose Tinted WHY WE LOVE IT: This little tube of sweet, non-greasy lip balm is easy to throw in your purse for a quick reapplication.

DANIELLE HARDY | URBAN WALLS

text by Julia Dilworth & Bria Lear photography by Bethany Menzel

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE TODDLERS ARE SLEEPING and a graphic designer turned full-time mama can have a few hours to herself? For Danielle Hardy, a quiet Friday night and a little creative inspiration sparked the beginning of her now-booming business. Framework catches up with Danielle, the founder and creator of Urban Walls, for the scoop on how she’s making over Vancouver, one wall at a time... Describing herself as a designer-turned-decalmaker, with a blogger twist, Danielle is playful and matter of fact when sharing her background. “I like to consider myself forever 21 but realistically you have to add 10 to that dream. Alberta born and BC raised, I grew up in White Rock. After high school, I received my diploma in graphic design and digital communications and realized that I had a passion to design and create. I worked in the graphic and web design industry for over 9 years. In that time I got hitched and popped out a couple of boys—life was never the same!” Danielle’s foray into wall decals happened by chance, but this stay at home mom admits she’d been craving a creative outlet. “About a year after my second son Maxim was born I was starting to get a little stir crazy. Having two boys in diapers was awesome but not exactly unleashing über amounts of creativity.” Though she’d already seen decals on the market, none satisfied her eye for style and wouldn’t come close to touching her own home’s walls. Already having a machine in the basement that cut stickers, Danielle created a couple designs and made some quick postings on Etsy. “I am not lying when I say that it was a lame Friday

BEHIND THE BRAND

night and I had nothing better to do. I couldn't believe when I opened up my computer the next day and I had a sale.” It started on such a whim that she goes on to reveal how surprised she was to get a response. “To be honest I didn't even own a roll of vinyl at the time.” For interior design fiends and apartment dwellers alike, Urban Walls decals are the perfect way to make a non-permanent, personal statement. Unlike paint, artwork, and wallpaper, Danielle’s designer decals are an easy and affordable solution to revive a lacklustre living space. “Living in the Vancouver area is expensive at the best of times, and very challenging for people to actually buy a home. Most have to rent or move on a consistent basis, but we also love to decorate our homes. Decals make a huge statement and come in so many colours, but you’re not tied to them. They’re removable with no damage to the walls!”

While she loves creating and designing, connecting with customers and other creatives has been just as much a blessing. Danielle shares her witty musings, inspirations, and tidbits of life with “the Hardy boys”, on Urban Walls’ newly designed blog—she loves the interaction and learning experiences blogging provides. As for creating new decals and growing the business, Danielle has the help of her husband, “who loves to have a say… in almost everything!” So what’s next for Urban Walls? Danielle’s keeping her lips sealed, but let slip that 2013 involves expansion into more than decals, and different modern approaches to decorating walls. Be sure to stay tuned, Urban Walls “will be launching a huge top secret line of secretness in the New Year.” We love a good secret, don’t you? fw

tasting: organic wine WRITTEN BY SOPHIE COLLINS

Organic Wine: This month at Framework, we aim to focus on healthy eating and whole foods for our well-being, and waistline! After an indulgent holiday season, you may feel the need to give up treats, sometimes including wine. While it is always best to limit your intake for caloric purposes, here are a few organic wines that you can feel better about sipping while preparing your healthy meals.

everyday table $

CONO SUR ORGANIC SAUVIGNON BLANC $14.49

With an upcoming trip to Chile and Argentina, I’ve become insanely interested in South American wine. This Sauvignon Blanc from Chile lives up to the refreshing expectations of its varietal, while being certified organic! At this price, it is a perfect wine to stock up on and sip with ease alongside a fresh and light salad.

dinner party $$

CHAPOUTIER BELLERUCHE COTES DU RHONE $17.99

This organic red wine has amazing value (Not to mention the bottle is beautiful!). A wellrounded, big red wine from Cotes-Du-Rhone, France, its flavors are balanced and it has a smooth mouth feel. Complete with herbal notes and a hint of cocoa, indulge--guilt free--with a glass of this red at dinner!

special occasion $$$

JEAN BOUSQUET RESERVA ORGANIC $19.99

The Malbec grape hails from the Mendoza region of Argentina. Known for complex, yet approachable flavors, Malbec is a crowd pleaser; it can be shared with friends who have completely different wine tastes. This wine is full with berry and rich chocolate flavors, and hints of minerality... As decadent as it sounds, we promise it’s organic!

Red wine has a compound called resveratrol, known to have various health benefits—life extension, protecting your heart, and cancer prevention to name a few. While this isn’t license to overindulge, know that one glass is considered healthy! framework

PINS &

NEEDLES Can you banish burnout? Framework's Editor-in-Chief finds out. WRITTEN BY BRIA LEAR PHOTOS COURTESY OF VIVIEN HSIUNG

Y

our energy is low, your digestion is poor, your skin is lacklustre, your focus is fleeting, your muscles are tense... you’re just plain burnt out. Whether affected by temporary stress or chronic ailments, you can’t possibly build your empire with an unbalanced body. The New Year is upon us, and we want to ensure you live your best life, reach your goals, and feel fabulous all the time (so you can conquer the world of course!). With that in mind, Framework’s Editor-in-chief turns to Registered Licensed Acupuncturist, Vivien Hsiung, to restore her own body’s balance with this Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment.

“You worry a lot don’t you?” Well yes, I guess so. I’m sitting in a cozy office-sized room at Chopra Yoga Center with Vivien Hsiung, Registered Licensed Acupuncturist. With fingers on my wrist, she spends a few minutes feeling my pulse, and is less asking questions than making observations. We’ve been chatting for roughly half an hour about my varied health concerns, based on the extensive patient intake form I filled out before my appointment. Overall, I’d been feeling burnt out. Since September, my recovery period after the release of each issue had been getting longer and longer; all-nighters were taking their toll. By October, the majority of my wardrobe was noticeably looser on my five-foot-seven frame. I was having trouble falling asleep and had a hard time focusing. By mid-November, I’d managed framework

8

to put the precious weight back on, but stress had depleted my immune system and I caught three colds over the course of four weeks. Not surprisingly, my tension headaches (a familiar pain I’d managed to avoid since I left my job in May) started to return on a more regular basis than I was willing to endure. I kept telling myself “just make it ‘til Christmas when you can rest and relax”. That week I received an email from a local Acupuncturist. “I am a young woman entrepreneur,” Vivien wrote, “who is passionate to allow women to have a better relationship with

their bodies and understand the importance of balance and placing their health and wellness as one of their top priorities.” I was intrigued, and also felt a little guilty—my health certainly hadn’t been a priority these past months. “In establishing healthy relationships with our bodies,” she continued, “we prevent chronic health issues and allow for healthy active women to perform at their maximum capability.” Had she somehow been listening in on my inner dialogue? With an invitation to try a couple sessions, the timing couldn’t have been more serendipitous. I quickly hit reply and scheduled an appointment for the following week.

A long-time sufferer of chronic headaches, I’d become accustomed to popping back a veritable cocktail of pills. They were necessary to quell the often-daily pain that left me zapped of all energy and without focus. After my initial assessment, we decided to focus the treatment on my neck and shoulders. A longtime sufferer of chronic headaches, I’d become accustomed to popping back a veritable cocktail of pills. They were necessary to quell the oftendaily pain that left me zapped of all energy and without focus. Frustrated by my doctor’s onedimensional advice (take an extra-strength Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen as soon as you feel a headache coming on), I’d stubbornly ignore the early signs and later end up taking stronger medicine—Tylenol 3’s left over from having my wisdom teeth removed. Healthy? Probably not. But also no better than a continuous combination of painkillers and anti-inflammatories. It was pretty clear that Vivien shared my frustrations; pill popping doesn’t exactly contribute to overall well-being. “Let’s work on getting rid of these headaches,” she empathized, asking me to take a deep breath in as she inserted the first hair-thin needle. It was the first time I felt that someone could actually help me; Vivien’s goal is to educate her patients and give

34

framework

them the tools necessary to know when and why their bodies are out of balance. “When we ignore what’s happening in our bodies long term, it can turn into more serious diseases. Acupuncture,” she explains, “can rebalance and break bad habits so you don’t have to keep getting treatments and feeling like you’re stuck in a never-ending cycle.” Using her fingers to find the knotted muscles and pressure points, Vivien’s needles hit their marks like mini missiles sent to zap areas of tension. If you’ve never experienced Acupuncture before, the feeling is akin to hitting your funny bone. As she placed more needles across my shoulders, up my neck, and into my hairline, the most successful produced momentary pressure followed by a fleeting tingling sensation. Vivien tells me to think of my body as a series circuit—if one part is missing, or one point in the body is blocked, the circuit doesn’t work properly. Essentially, Acupuncture re-polarizes the body. That tingle, I learn, is the Acupuncture “releasing energy or stagnation, or bringing energy to the point so it completes the circuit again.”

CULTURE & LIVING

On my way home, I notice my shoulders sit a little straighter, and my neck feels a little longer. There’s a softness and openness to my muscles that I haven’t felt for quite some time. Though a little groggy, I’m feeling refreshed. Vivien likens the immediate after-effects to the result of a good yoga session. “Acupuncture is forcing your body into Shavasana; it’s getting you to that meditative state without you actually having to do anything.” And long term? Well, I can’t be certain, but I do know this: I have a renewed connection with my body and my health, and an awareness that is taking more priority. To perform my best day-today, I must take care of myself first. I will take care of myself first. I have not just Acupuncture, but more specifically Vivien, to thank for that.

WHAT IS TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE? Chinese Medicine encompasses a variety of techniques like food therapy, cupping, gua sha, exercise, and acupuncture. There are five elements in the body and we look at the body in twelve meridians, or systems. We name each system after a different organ—this doesn’t mean it is the organ, but rather the energy system that associates with that organ. We diagnose the body by looking at the root cause of the problem, based on the symptoms present and using the five-element system and the patterns that we see. Acupuncture specifically is all about reenergizing the body and balancing the systems by moving Qi and blood. WHAT IS QI?

MYSTIC OR MEDICINAL? Read on as Vivien Hsiung demystifies acupuncture, shares her thoughts on finding balance, and sheds light on the most common health concerns for young professional women.

The literal translation is energy, but I hate that word because it makes the medicine sound so mystic. Qi is also a nerve impulse and has a symbiotic relationship with blood. Blood follows framework

35

CULTURE & LIVING

36

framework

the Qi, and blood brings the energy to the points along each meridian; however, energy also pushes the blood to the points. They are like yin and yang. WHAT DREW YOU TO CHINESE MEDICINE, AND ACUPUNCTURE SPECIFICALLY? I’m Chinese by descent—my dad was in Taiwan during the Chinese revolution and they still taught Chinese Medicine in the churches there, probably undercover. Ever since I was young and could hold something, my dad and I would go look for rocks on the beach to use as pressure point holders, and he’d give me reflexology charts to look at. Whenever we were sick he’d use reflexology on us. My mom grew up in Southern China, where the climate is very damp and they use a lot of herbs and diet therapy. Growing up my mom would tell us to eat specific things based on our health or the weather, and that each kind of food has a different nature. I was drawn to this because I love cooking, but didn’t fully understand it until I went to school. Also, acupuncture was also the only thing that helped me with whiplash and neck pain after a really bad car accident. C AN YOU SHARE MORE ABOUT FOOD AND IT’S RELATIONSHIP TO CHINESE MEDICINE? Each food has a cooling or warming property, and essentially what you put into your body changes it. What we eat right now is our hair 2 months later—it’s a process, it’s the cells that we make. Also, understanding the right chemistry in your body is important. Whenever you’re eating right it makes you healthier and happier. Look at gluten and dairy allergies; they’re a huge problem especially on the West Coast, where it’s really damp. When you eat things like wheat, sugar, and dairy they have a dampening quality—they create mucus in your system. Foods like this are more problematic for people here in our damp climate. WHEN YOU’RE ASSESSING A NEW CLIENT, WHAT KINDS OF SYMPTOMS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

I’m looking for the imbalance. There’s a series of questions, and one poignant question for each of the body’s twelve systems. From there I can focus on the system that is giving them the most problems and I’ll ask about whatever is relevant. Diagnosis is pretty important—I can ask a ton of questions, but in the end it doesn’t actually matter what they tell me; I can tell what’s wrong by looking at their tongue and feeling their pulses. CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW THIS WORKS? Meridians, or pathways, run all throughout your body and all of them end up in your face and tongue. When looking at the tongue, there are different areas that correspond to different organ systems. You can tell when one system is out of whack by the quality of the tongue—the saliva, appearance, etc… With the pulses, there are two different layers and 3 different positions of reading a pulse. Each of those positions at a different layer relates to a different organ. WHAT AILMENTS OR HEALTH COMPLAINTS DO YOU SEE MOST OFTEN IN WOMEN AGED 20-35? Digestive problems are number one—often part of really bad PMS symptoms from being on birth control for a really long time. They think it’s normal so they don’t do anything about it. I also see a lot of irregular periods, infertility, and back and neck pain—there’s an area across your back called “the band of grief” and women tend to carry a lot of stresses in that particular area. I find that women’s neck pain is actually worse than a lot of the men that walk through my door. Their pain tolerance is higher, so by the time they come in they’re bent over backwards and have migraines all the time; they just deal with it instead of seeking help. ARE THERE ANY ISSUES MOST PREVALENT IN BUSINESS OWNERS OR ENTREPRENEURS? Definitely stress-caused ailments, which can manifest in so many ways. framework

HOW C AN ACUPUNCTURE CONTRIBUTE TO STRESS MANAGEMENT? It relaxes you—it has a great sedative quality but it can also bring you up as a stimulant. You just feel better, like you’ve had a really good night’s sleep. If I’ve been really stressed and I get Acupuncture, it’s almost like I’ve had a power nap that rebalances everything and I get a refreshing jolt. Similar to that euphoric feeling after a yoga class, it’s like a release of endorphins.

When you combine acupuncture with a healthy diet and exercise you can maintain so much of your own health so you don’t get sick as often. I don’t do herbs myself, but I often refer out to a herbalist. WELLNESS EDUCATION IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO YOU—WHAT DO YOUNG WOMEN NEED TO BE ESPECIALLY CONSCIOUS OF?

Women our age want to do it all—and do it perfectly—but we have to make sure we have our basics covered before we help other people.Taking time out for yourself and having your essentials met will allow you to make better decisions, help you to not procrastinate, and to be mindful and on task with the small amount of time that you can be working. HOW HAS TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE IMPROVED YOUR OVERALL WELLBEING? Being an entrepreneur is really difficult, especially because everyone is an entrepreneur these days and there is no set way of doing things. In your first few years of business everything is trial and error, but the stress that comes along with that is overwhelming. Without Chinese Medicine I’d probably be overly stressed, not eating properly, and letting my health decline. And when your health declines you can’t concentrate on your business. It also helps me keep focused. TELL US MORE ABOUT THE COMBINED EFFECTS OF ACUPUNCTURE AND OTHER METHODS OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE… I think it’s really important, especially if your

VIVIEN'S 3 SIMPLE TIPS TO INCREASE OVERALL WELLNESS 1. Always drink water at room temperature, especially when you have your period. Blood congeals when it’s cold, so drinking cold water makes your periods and cramps worse. My mom has been telling me this for years and it’s only recently that I’ve realized she’s right. 2. Eat whole foods and be mindful about what you’re eating. Food should be looked at as medicine, and if you’re giving your body the wrong medicine it’s going to react. 3. Love your body. framework

WHAT TO PACK FOR YOUR

Winter Getaway AUSTRALIA | CANADA | JAMAICA

Even though we’ve already seen what the fashion world has to offer for this coming spring, it’s not quite time to pack away our winter woolens and hit the stores for new floral frocks. However, this is the time that we tire of looking at our own grey skylines (and wardrobes) and find ourselves craving an escape. Framework has rounded up the essentials for three very different winter getaways, each catering to a different genre of travel. Despite their differences, each destination is sure to beat the winter blues, no matter what kind of vacation your heart desires. WRITTEN BY RHYA JOHNSTON-WALLACE framework

VANCOUVER BASED PERSONAL STYLIST

Michelle Addison has come a long way since the days of dressing Barbie in her closet… First cutting her teeth in the fashion world at Gastown staples the Block and One of a Few, this Theatre major later honed her talent for wardrobe revival with stylist Jessie Carlson. Recently appearing on Breakfast Television, and working with everyone from stay-at-home moms to big names like The Real Housewives and Ginnifer Goodwin, Michelle’s expert eye is razor sharp. When invited to join her for a morning of dress-up with Once Upon A Time’s Meghan Ory, we jumped at the chance. Soaking up Michelle’s wardrobe secrets, we discovered a refreshing outlook on personal style...

WHO INFLUENCED YOUR INTEREST IN FASHION? My mother first introduced me to fashion and shopping! I spent a lot of time waiting in stores while my mother tried things on. My grandmother was also very stylish and wore heels even as bedroom slippers; it was always important in my family to be well dressed! I also loved magazines and I remember looking through Vogue and Bazaar at ten years old. In my closet I even styled Barbies in crazy outfits—secretly of course because that probably wasn't cool… case in point as I was hiding in my closet!

THAT’S FANTASTIC! BUT, YOU BEGAN YOUR CAREER AS AN ACTOR; AT WHAT POINT DID YOU SHIFT FOCUS TO FASHION?

a hard time letting the acting go, so I didn't—now I still take the occasional part here and there. Ironically, I believe in being a woman of many hats!

Even at theatre school I always loved fashion design. I remember having a difficult time deciding not to study costume design further because it was so interesting. When I was pursuing acting and needed another job I started working at The Block in Gastown and I just loved being around clothes. I later helped Michelle Rizzardo with her store One of a Few and learned so much from her about buying and styling. I had

HOW DID YOU TURN THIS INTO A STYLING CAREER? Working with Jessie Carlson completely turned my life in another direction. I found that I was really good at connecting with people and helping them define or re-define their personal style—I also learned the art of a really good closet cleanse! I think that after dressing as different characters for auditions all those years

I can kind of imagine what everyone wants to dress like for every occasion or job. My business has grown through recommendations, and I feel very fortunate that people feel that I can offer them a service with value. YOU OFFER QUITE A RANGE OF SERVICES. WHICH PART OF YOUR JOB DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST? I love the outfit design aspect of my job. First we discover what area needs attention, then we shop to fill in the gaps, and then the last part is making some killer outfits with the clothes that they have chosen. I love getting inspired in a wardrobe and watching someone relish in how great they feel in a certain outfit. WHERE DO YOU START WHEN ANALYZING SOMEONE’S WARDROBE? Pants. I always start with pants. I’m not sure why, but it's a good place to start. Although before that I ask them questions about where they feel their wardrobe is and where they would like it to be. YOU SPEND A LOT OF ONE ON ONE TIME WITH YOUR CLIENTS. DOES HAVING A PERSONAL CONNECTION MAKE IT EASIER TO DRESS THEM? The personal connection makes it so much easier! Once they can see that I am not trying to

I have heard everything you could imagine in the changing room, closets, homes, cars etc. and I feel like it's a privilege to get to walk with each one of my clients while they transform into their most stylish selves. YOUR EARS MUST BE BURNING! WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING NEW ITEMS FOR A CLIENT? Lifestyle. I listen when I hear moms tell me they can't move in structured blazers or about random body issues that everyone has, men and

CONFIDENCE CAN CERTAINLY TRANSFORM A PERSON. DO YOU PREFER STYLING MEN OR WOMEN? I like both for different reasons. Women I get to live vicariously through by building some amazing wardrobes. Men I get to dress up and boost their confidence in the “style” world. SPEAKING OF LIVING VICARIOUSLY… YOU HAVE

days I'm more refined and other days I'm more rock and roll. I have a point of view but it doesn't have to define who I am for eternity. And let's just be honest and say that working with The Room in Vancouver has enhanced my style ten-fold; I am so grateful that there is cool fashion to buy and great designers represented. My personal style has The Room to thank! Okay, and Proenza Schouler, and maybe Comme Des Garcons too… IT SOUNDS LIKE LOVE IS IN THE AIR… WHAT ITEMS GIVE YOU AN INSTANT MOOD LIFT? New shoes. Even just carrying the box home to put on my shelf

My motivation is making everyone look the best they can. WHAT ONE PIECE OF WARDROBE ADVICE DO YOU

FANTASTIC PERSONAL STYLE! HOW HAS IT EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS? I think I am freer with what I wear now. I don't stick to "I only wear black" or "I only like edgy clothes." I like to throw in a bit of everything—colour, accessories, preppy Ralph Lauren Black Label with a cool Isabel Marant jacket—some

and stare at! IF YOU COULD GET YOUR HANDS ON ANYONE’S WARDROBE WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY? I have some clients whose wardrobes have gotten so good that it's hard to stand it. But Taylor Tomasi Hill is my favourite. I love all her clothes!

She loves Proenza as much as me—maybe more—and she has red hair, which makes me think that her outfits would look good on me too. AT THE START OF A NEW YEAR, WE’RE ALL THINKING ABOUT REFRESHING OUR CLOSETS. WITH WINTER NOT QUITE OVER, WHERE SHOULD WE BEGIN? January always becomes so dreary with the rain and the Christmas come-down. The best thing to do is add a little colour bit by bit. The spring collections are full of colour and start arriving at the beginning of February; I find the earlier the better when buying spring clothes, as most of the good pieces are already in stores by mid-March. Also, bring out the warmer pieces of your spring wardrobe like lighter sweaters and brighter skirts and try mixing them in with the darker wintry pieces. Most of the time people call me by the end of January—by then they are just so sick of fall clothes and need some life! IF AN OVERHAUL IS OUT OF THE QUESTION, HOW CAN WE RENEW OUR EXISTING WARDROBES? Spend some money on accessories; I often find that women miss the mark on this. Add some belts. This is a good way to define and add depth to your outfits. Invest in a good clutch or two. Or, add one investment piece per season

Sometimes my job is quite exhausting on many levels, but I really love what I do so somehow it doesn't feel like work that often. My personal shopping burnouts rarely happen because I don't have much time to shop for myself! WHERE DO YOU TURN FOR FRESH INSPIRATION? I love New York. WHO ENCOURAGED YOUR CREATIVE INTERESTS?

I am blessed with very supportive, non-traditional parents, who always pushed me to pursue my passion and my dreams. Both my parents, although professionals in their respective fields, are also artists—my dad is a talented painter and my mom was an avid dancer and singer. It was crucial for my parents to see my sister and I pursuing not only our academic goals, but our artistic ones as well, so I was enrolled in many performing arts classes since childhood. Around grade

nine or so, I decided that performing was something I wanted to do professionally one day, and my mom and dad didn’t even bat an eye! Instead they pushed me to audition, and never missed seeing any of my productions. I think I’ve been brought up to always pursue my passion and to live my truth from very early on. WHAT LED YOU TO PURSUE BROADCAST JOURNALISM?

I had just graduated from Theatre school at UBC, and was doing a bunch of odd jobs while trying to make it as a performer-actor. In the

summer of 2007 I took a job hosting the Grouse Mountain Lumberjack show—yes you heard that right, Persian girl hosting a lumberjack show— and realized that I absolutely loved meeting and interacting with the audience. I had always been into MC-ing and hosting, but I didn’t think I could make it a career until that summer. With much encouragement from my mom, I enrolled into some part-time Broadcasting classes at BCIT, and it finally clicked! Those classes spurred a great level of interest and passion in me; I finally felt I had found my niche and my calling. The next framework

I have been obsessed with fashion for as long as I’ve been able to dress myself. I always knew that someday I would like to combine this with my passion for broadcasting. I also wanted to shine a light on the events and initiatives of the local fashion scene. So much of what we saw on Fashion Television or even what we currently see on other networks is very Toronto centric or global. But, women in Vancouver want

In my first year at BCIT’s full-time program, Ethan Faber—a news producer at CTV Vancouver—invited me to come down and intern in the newsroom, an opportunity that I jumped at. It was quite the learning experience; with a whole team dedicated to covering breaking news, it’s a very fast-paced, deadlinedriven environment. My role

Hopefully I’ve contributed just a little bit to improving the cultural identity of our city. was researching stories and setting up interviews for the reporters with police chiefs, Translink officials, community experts etc… I was blessed with a bad snow storm during my time there—I say blessed because it created a lot of great stories—which even gave me the opportunity to go out with a shooter to meet the people affected by power outages and commuting issues. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE FOR WEST COAST STYLE TO COME TO FRUITION?

Not very long! About five months after being hired at Shaw Television, I pitched my idea for a local fashion segment and took it to the development stage. I was lucky that my programming department was open to the idea and very supportive in the planning stages. It then took about 6 months, from the time we filmed the pilot to the time we were in full production. When seeing an episode of West Coast Style, I don’t think viewers realize how much love and hard work has gone into making it happen. THERE’S A LOT MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE! WHAT GOES ON BEHIND THE SCENES?

As both producer and host of the segment, I wear multiple hats, requiring me to be super organized with all the details! First is the planning stage; I research story ideas and after solidifying my focus I get on the phone or email to organize all who are needed for the shoot. On the day of the shoot, I get glammed up—I do my own hair and make-up, usually—head to the location or multiple locations, and shoot for about three to four hours. Back in the studio I look through all my footage and do what is called an assemble edit for my editor. Basically, I’m picking all the clips and sound bites and framework

placing them in the correct order. After writing the script and recording my voiceovers, I pass it all over to my talented editor who packages the final story for airing. WOW, A WOMAN OF MANY HATS INDEED. YOUR BA IN THEATRE MUST COME IN HANDY; HOW DO YOU DRAW ON THAT SKILL SET NOW?

I am so grateful of my background in Theatre, it gave me a strong level of confidence and the—excuse my bluntness—balls to get up front of anyone and public speak! It also gave

76

framework

me the proper training on how to use my voice, breath and projection. Although incredibly fun and rewarding, the theatre world, like broadcasting, can be competitive and quite cutthroat; it taught me early on to work hard, be determined, and constantly be on my A-game. WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

The ability to connect with an audience, meet the fabulous people Vancouver has to offer, and share stories that truly excite me.

ARE THERE ANY ASPECTS THAT MAKE YOU NERVOUS OR ARE OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE?

Telling people no—I feel bad when I have to say no to an interview, especially one that is of interest to me personally. I wish there was enough time and resources in the world to do stories on all the great boutiques, products, and designers that I get pitched about, but sadly it’s just a reality of the business. My segment is weekly and I keep my viewers and demographic always in mind first, which at times may not jive well with

certain story ideas. But just because I say no, doesn’t mean I am not interested... I’ve often revisited ideas down the road. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE SEGMENT TO DATE?

It’s hard to pick just one, but I would have to say my interview with Jeanne Beker when she was last in town to promote her clothing line EDIT. Jeanne has truly been one of my idols growing up, even before I knew I wanted to pursue broadcasting. I’ve spent most of my life watching her, and interviewing her was such a surreal experience for me. Knowing I was going to interview, let alone meet, my idol had me bursting with energy! It ended up being so wonderful; she’s so eloquent, not to mention very charming and approachable. She also had some really nice things to say about my work, which was just the cherry on the cake. AND THE MOST NERVEWRACKING?

There have been a few that come to mind, but when I had just started at Shaw I interviewed a municipal figure and was so taken aback by his arrogant and rude attitude that I came out of that interview very close to cutting it from the story all together. However, I brushed it off and produced the full story, but learnt that sometimes, it has nothing to do with you or what you do—some people are just
