And, when entertaining friends— or enjoying a solo stroll—our new Playlist series is sure to set the perfect mood. Feeling the tug to follow your passions? If they lie within the realm of fashion, you’ll find insight and encouragement in our feature interviews with two industry experts who have a further connection. BOOK CLUB

BOARDING SCHOOL STORIES

EVERY MONTH WE CHOOSE THREE MUST-READ BOOKS, FROM RECENT RELEASES TO OLD FAVOURITES, THAT WOULD FIT INTO ANY FRAMEWORK GIRL’S BOOK CLUB. IT’S JUST ONE MORE EXCUSE TO GET TOGETHER WITH FRIENDS OVER SWEET TREATS AND COCKTAILS!

by Sara Constantineau

Your high school days might seem like a distant

memory, but it is fun (and maybe a bit traumatizing) to reflect on that tumultuous time come back-to-school season. Stories set in boarding schools are full of dramatic potential; if you keep hundreds of kids in close quarters with limited adult supervision, something exciting, romantic, or even revelatory is bound to happen.

THE MOTH DIARIES BY RACHEL KLEIN

4/5

THE STORY

A sixteen-year-old boarding school student has a past full of family tragedy that threatens her mood at every turn. She writes extensively in her journal, first about her roommate bestie Lucy, and then about the mysterious new girl Ernessa, whose odd nocturnal behavior and perceived fixation on Lucy causes our protagonist to believe she is not truly human.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

With a jealous, unreliable narrator, it’s difficult to separate facts from the biased recollections of a troubled teenage girl. This is a teen vampire story that goes back to basics; it is inspired by the gothic novel Carmilla, one of the first literary vampires that predates Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The allfemale setting elevates the politics of mean girls and queen bees with eerie and mysterious events that can’t be trusted.

BEST FOR: STAYING UP PAST YOUR BEDTIME 16

framework

BOOK CLUB

OPENLY STRAIGHT

4/5

BY BILL KONIGSBERG

THE STORY

Out, proud, and free from ridicule, Rafe is nonetheless tired of being known as the gay kid first and everything else second. When he finds himself at a new school amongst fellow jocks, his reputation doesn’t follow him. Without the labels, he feels a freedom he hasn’t known in a long time. When he falls for a fellow student, it suddenly becomes difficult to stay true to himself and keep his sexuality private.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

Frequently thought-provoking and laugh-out-loud funny, this coming-of-age novel outlines the inherent difficulty in staying true to yourself and trying to forget about other people’s expectations. It’s also really, truly hilarious.

BEST FOR: KEEPING THE SPIRIT OF PRIDE GOING STRONG

AND BOTH WERE YOUNG BY MADELEINE L'ENGLE

3.5 / 5

THE STORY

Flip is forced to move from her Connecticut home to a boarding school in Switzerland after her mother’s death. She feels lost in a sea of sophisticated European girls who are much more experienced with relationships. She resigns herself to a solitary, friendless existence, until she meets Paul, a French boy whose forbidden attention sparks a new selfconfidence and potential dangers that Flip must overcome.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

Madeleine L’Engle’s books are timeless classics that combine relatable adolescent issues with a sense of epic adventure, and this early novel is no exception. It expertly captures what it’s like to be an outsider in a gorgeous and romantic setting.

BEST FOR: INSPIRATION TO FIND A NEW TRUE LOVE framework

THE DRESSING ROOM

BY JULIA DILWORTH

fresh ideas for your home, one space at a time ...

FAR FROM KITSCHY KEEPSAKE It either reminds you of a once-in-a-lifetime trip you took, or encourages you to take one in future. Forget tourist keychains and fridge magnets, if you like it then you should put a ring on it: the Anthropologie Landmark ring dish ($12).

HIGH HEEL HOMAGE Capturing the late great’s extravagant drama and creativity are these two soft prints of Alexander McQueen’s iconic high heels ($14 for both, Etsy).

MINT CONDITION Mint is so hot right now, it can do no wrong. Especially in this lady-like lace tray from Urban Outfitters ($24).

CALL OF THE WILD Animal décor has come a long way since the gaping mouth, fangs-andall bear rugs that attracted dust and scared small children. The Cross classes it up with the whisper of a gold-stenciled zebra printed on cowhide ($895).

18

framework

THE GOLDEN RULE Not to overdo things, the Worlds Away William White Desk plays up its main attribute — a knockout set of legs — while going shrewdly understated on others ($1,745).

upstyle continued...

MIRROR, MIRROR If this reeled-in Rococo wall candy were around back in Snow White’s day, everyone would have agreed the mirror was the fairest of them all (Jonathan Adler Rococo White Wall Mirror $595).

18

www.socialexperiment.ca @Soc_Experiment framework

LAUNDRY LOVE Keep precious cargo safe and out of sight during the dirtier times of its life cycle with the fancy and functional IKEA Portis Laundry Basket ($27). Good to know: this baby holds up to 13 pounds.

CULTURE & LIVING CANNING CLUTTER Stubborn anti-décor odds and ends have met their match with the imported Baker’s Jar and the kindred Refracted Ambiance Jar from Anthropolgie ($24, $18).

OUT OF THIS ORB If you’re one to get tired of compliments, then we urge you to avoid the Currey and Co Alberto Orb chandelier. Strings of turquoise beading, pieces of antique mirror — the stares, the gasps! Don’t say we didn’t warn you ($2,191).

ANTIQUE TWIST Get the antique French chaise lounge in an apartment-appropriate size with this aptly named Minnie Stool from Pottery Barn ($313). Did we mention it swivels?

LOAFER LOVE Dare we say it, but this retroesque hand-inked print of YSL’s leopard loafers is more charming than the real thing — and at $31, a bloody bargain! (Etsy)

SOPHISTICATED STORAGE Closet space is precious, so when seasonal garments fall out of rotation store them safely in these breathable bags, which zip up like luggage, stack like containers and protect from bugs and assorted clothing eaters like nobody’s business ($10-15 ContainerStore.com).

SEW AND TELL For the fashionista who knows she can do better, take home the teemingwith-possibilities linen dress form from Urban Outfitters. Bonus: This little miss will amp up home décor in all states of undress ($325).

JEWEL TONES

This fall I love the idea of adding jewel tones not only to your closet and nails, but to your walls as well. When the weather begins to cool, one of my favorite fashion trends is layering rich emerald and navy pieces with crisp neutrals; a look that is both sophisticated and classic. This season, don’t be afraid to BY AMELIA EICHHOLZ translate fashion’s best looks to your home.

THE PERFECT PAIR.

AT PORT + QUARTER, ECLECTIC AND QUIRKY MEETS STRUCTURED AND MINIMAL.WITH A FINGER ONTHE PULSE OF CURRENTTRENDS, THE LADIES AT VANCOUVER’S CUSTOM-TAILORED INTERIOR DESIGN FIRM ARE CATCHING THE EYE OF HOMEOWNERS WITH DISCERNING TASTES. Kyla Ray and Michelle Miazga are the masterminds behind the full-service interior design firm Port + Quarter, which specializes in a masculine aesthetic. “Clients are often surprised that we’re women,” says Ray, who heads up the creative and marketing sides of the house. “For us, the masculine aesthetic creates spaces that are usable for both sexes,” says Miazga, who excels at the technical aspects of the business. “We’re not about furniture that you can’t sit on or things that are so delicate or frilly that you’d be afraid to touch them.” Guided by a design mantra that form follows function, Ray and Miazga draw on their respective strengths and collaborate on the vision of each project. “We can reign each other in or ramp it up,” Miazga says. “We’re constantly going to each other. I’ve said, ‘Ok, pick me a wallpaper,’ because I would just pick grasscloth or something really simple. I don’t take the risks that Kyla would take visually.” From full-scale renovations to revitalizing small

spaces, Ray and Miazga tackle every project with their signature style, celebrating texture, muted colours and functionality. One look at their portfolio and it’s clear that their creations are like well-tailored suits: high quality products that make their owners look stunning. “It’s all about our clients’ personalities,” says Ray, who prides herself on reflecting their lifestyles. When designing a space for a couple, Ray found Star Wars illustrations on Etsy that captured the husband’s interests and appealed to the wife’s artistic tastes. “There are ways to make even the quirkiest things an awesome, key piece of your design,” says Miazga. “One of the biggest surprises is that so many women are really digging our style.” For Ray and Miazga, you could say that the business runs in their blood. Miazga grew up in a family of homebuilders and woodworkers while Ray’s family consists of architects and interior designers. “When I would babysit, I loved going into other

people’s houses,” says Ray, recalling her passion for design at a young age. “I would imagine what furniture I would put in there and how I would rearrange their living room.” Entrepreneurs at heart, Ray and Miazga met while working at a home staging agency. The connection was instant. The result was a match made in design heaven. Beginning with a residential focus in April 2012, Port + Quarter has since expanded into multifamily developments and commercial projects. In the future, the company will include an e-commerce website offering limited-run, prepackaged design options. The duo attributes their success to extensive market research and a solid partnership. Neither party could have envisioned starting this venture on their own. “We’ve kept pushing each other,” says Miazga. And true to their complementary fashion, Ray adds: “I think we ground each other too.” fw

WINETRIO

tasting: red, white, rosé W R ITT E N BY S O P H I E C O L L I N S

With summer over and fall upon us, Framework wants to make the transition as easy as possible for you. This means sipping some extraordinary wines and dreaming about all of the fun you’ve had over the last few months. This September, we bring you three wines suitable to wrapping up the summer and looking forward to the fall.

red $

white CEDAR CREEK MERLOT CABERNET $19.95

It’s hard to find a complex red wine at such a great price point, but Cedar Creek does it with their Merlot Cabernet. Full of blackberry, clove and spice aromas, this wine is the essence of fall, curled up with a cozy sweater and a stew bubbling on the stove. It doesn’t forget to remind you of summer, though, with its ripe berry flavours.

$$

rosé BLUE MOUNTAIN SAUVIGNON BLANC $18.90

While many wino’s switch to red during the cooler months, if you’re lucky enough to live in a place that keeps the heat coming well into September and October, this wine is for you. It’s light yet full in flavour, with hints of citrus and green apple. It can be aged due to its complexity, so don’t worry about stowing it away for an unseasonably warm autumn day.

$$$

CHÂTEAU MIRAVAL CÔTES DE PROVENCE ROSÉ $28.99

For the lucky ones who still have early fall getaways planned to warm tropical destinations, this wine will surely prepare you. Made by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt (we were as surprised as you are now!) this rosé is perfectly balanced with berry flavours that pair wonderfully with late summer and early fall produce.

tip: There are no rules when it comes to enjoying certain wines in certain seasons.

In our opinion, it’s all about what you like. With that said, there is nothing more soul-warming in fall’s crisp weather than a crackling fire, homemade soup, and a glass of your favourite wine (red, white, or rosé).

ENTERTAINING MAVENS SOPHIE COLLINS AND GILLIAN TEAL SHOW YOU HOW TO EMBRACE THE CHANGING SEASONS WITH BOTTLES OF BUBBLY AND A WARM WHITE PALETTE. (YES, EVEN AFTER LABOUR DAY!)

Décor Decorating for a white party may sound straightforward, but using a monochromatic colour scheme (read: different tones of the same hue) can be tricky. For example, layering white tablecloths with white napkins white plates may scream “white party!” but creates little drama, and can often fall flat. By keeping a few key design concepts in mind, you’ll create both sophisticated décor and a great party atmosphere. We were fortunate to work with The Cross Décor and Design, who gave us access to some fabulous white accessories to help complete the look.

2. Another agreed upon favourite by our party-goers is the Zanatta Winery Glenora Fantasia Brut. The flavour profile is light, hinted with pear, and has a zesty citrus finish.

3. We’re big fans of Gray Monk; producing great wine with even better prices, their Odyssey Traditional Brut is no exception. With refreshing flavours of apple and honey, it’s perfect for the beginning of fall.

Dessert We served a collection of confections from Sweet Bake Shop. Delicate meringues (which looked crisp and sculptural on the white cake stand), cake pops (served in a white glass vase, these sweet treats acted as edible florals), and gorgeous vanilla cupcakes (the kind you’d fight over like Jimmy Choos at a sample sale) left our palates on a high note, especially when paired with the last bubbly. fw

The Fall Fashion Trend Report for 2013

Just a hop and a skip away from New York, across the pond in London, a stone’s throw from Milan and a stop off in Paris, the semi-annual fashion month unveiled runways rife with notable trends for the coming season. From Hitchcock heroism and punk parties to pops of pretty, pastel pinks and patterns and prints borrowed from the boys, few fall seasons have been as sartorially sweeping as this one. As you prepare to transform your wardrobe to take on the cool, crisp air of autumn, Framework uncovers how to go from runway to reality with the top ten most wearable and shopable reoccurring trends, as spotted during fashion week in New York, London, Milan and Paris.

FALL FASHION HAS A REBELLIOUS SIDE THIS SEASON. Plaid-heavy runways at Givenchy, Versace and Saint Laurent gave us the opportunity once more to rock out in the 90s with grunge-inspiration. Look to the defining style elements of this defiant culture—tartan and plaid, leather, studs, spikes, slogan shirts and dramatic 3 denim—to cultivate your punk-couture look. Mixing edgy elements like tough metals and luxe leather with the prettifying power of a flirty frock is modern way to rock this trend. Rebel against the feminine silhouettes and girly getups of the season and strike a bad-ass chord with the "in" crowd. All you need is the right attitude.

THE BOHEMIAN SENTIMENTS OFTHE 60SAND 70s get a modern reshaping for fall as seen on the runways of Prabal Gurung, Rodarte and Suno. Subtly and luxuriously infusing garments with a hippie spirit, the decidedly new bohème inspires a folklore fantasy. Sprawling floral patterns and geometric prints combined with exotic and elegant embroidery projects the wandering nomad and carefree vibe that this trend embodies. It’s no wonder the easy elegance of this trend is favoured by all.

3. MEN'S CLUB

2

3

MANY OF THIS SEASON'S RUNWAY LOOKS WERE borrowed from the boys, but it's the classic, old school menswear patterns and prints that make dressing like a dude oh-so-chic and charming this fall. The cool combination of a traditional masculine textile paired with a contemporary cut and sleek silhouette is the new way to wear menswear for fall 2013. Getting into the boy’s club is as easy as adopting structured pieces and tailored suiting with a refined polish; think haberdashery fabrics and patterns in heavy wools, herringbones, stripes, tartans, plaids, houndstooth and tweeds. Unlike seasons prior, the air of androgyny dissipated to make way for the leading lady wearing her boss' clothes. Reach timeless, feminine shapes like cinched waists, full and pencil skirts, and slim cut trousers.

IT'S ALL IN THE DETAILS AS DESIGNERS like Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang and Preen took a bold stance on over-the-top and opulent embellishments. Chock-full of crystal clusters, shimmering sequins, costume gems and elaborate embroidery, everything from statement sweaters to cool outerwear got the lavish treatment thanks to a host of awe-inspiring accents. Upping the ante in luxury, this season the shows brought the bling and put a spotlight on supercharged sparkle. Whether you choose moderation or decide to go all in, be sure to carry your look with confidence and conviction as seriously embellished ensembles ignite the night and illuminate the day. 4

LOVE IT OR LOATHE IT, THERE'S NO denying that fur was a statement piece on the fall 2013 runways. Sinfully soft with Artic-worthy warmth, designers like Monique Lhuillier, Reem Acra and Fendi, didn't shy away from using faux or real furs in eye-catching hues to make the catwalk come alive. A splashy palette of classic, dip-dyed and patchwork pelts was as colourful as it was controversial. Walking a wild new path, fur reigns supreme this season: sport luxe interpretations like collar accents and sumptuous scarves, or go for opulence with full vests and coats.

ACHIEVE YOUR STYLISH SUPERHERO MOMENT in the spotlight this season when sporting an impeccably tailored cape around your shoulders. Call it futuristic, superhero-chic or straight out of a gothic flick, this structural shape is here to stay. After a successful run on the fall 2012 runways, capes are back in a big way to command the attention they deserve. Whether short and sweet, architectural and 3 medieval, or sweeping and mysterious, this traditional topper is a stylish solution to fall's transitional weather; be prepared for the inherent drama that comes with this silhouette.

7. PRETTY IN PINK BEAT THE WINTER BLUES FOR GOOD AND say goodbye to seasonal affective disorder! This season ushered in a colour palette more reminiscent of spring than fall, as a bounty of beautiful soft-hued pinks made their way down the runways of Celine, Miu Miu and more. Cut the overly sweet factor by channelling a sophisticated lady with ultrafemme pieces that are refined and elegant, instead of bubblegum playland. Amidst a sea of black, throw caution to the wind when selecting traditional autumn outerwear, as nothing has more pick-me-up potential than this candy-coloured hue.

THE LEADING LADIES IN THE LATE, GREAT Alfred's cinematic masterpieces took center stage on the catwalks of Prada, Bottega Veneta and Celine, for a femme fatale mystique that usurped the structured 1940s silhouette. As a film-noirish vibe descended upon the collections, designers channeled midcentury lines—nipped waists and skirtsuits— reminiscent and worthy of Hitchcock’s blonde bombshells. Awash with ladylike tailoring, soft shoulders and rounded hips, think feminine suiting and elegant dresses to emulate the hourglass silhouette and eternally seductive power of the era in your own Ingrid Bergman-inspired style.

9.MODERN MILITIA HISTORICALLY SPEAKING, CAMOUFLAGE PRINTS were designed for disguise, but the uniform is anything but discreet this season as designers like Michael Kors, Prabal Gurung and Calvin Klein sent out an authoritative parade down the runway to command attention in a major way. Military inspired garb no longer solely equals utilitarian coats with epaulettes and gold buttons; the new wave of modern militia wares is all about looking luxe as it enlisted structured dresses, knits and feminine skirts to play the part of commander in chic. Recruit an army attitude with cargo pockets, officer jackets, strong shoulders and belted waists to fall inline.

RULING AND ROCKING THE RUNWAY FOR yet another season is the luxe leather trend, as spotted at the shows of Fendi, Altuzarra and Michael Kors. A staple both on and off the runway no matter the season, leather goes beyond basic, boring black to cover every angle of clothing and curate a chic closet. From the sleeves on a sweatshirt, to a vampy dress, to a timeless moto jacket, leather’s prevalence 3 is equal parts seductive and sophisticated. This fall, the new hides have an urban sensibility that’s a little bit tough, a little bit punk—rebelling never looked so right.

has perfected that difficult to find sweet spot in business: a harmonious place where employees feel like family, and clients have become friends. Not one to settle for the status quo, Christine’s vision for her South Surrey boutique, Muse Social Fashion House, encompasses much more than a local place to shop for the latest fashion finds. Under her careful nurturing and dedication to building genuine relationships, Muse has become the community’s style and social hub—a true testament to Christine’s strength as a leader. From naïve beginnings to future Muse goals, Christine tells us all about life as a fashion retailer, buyer, and boss, while sharing those little things that make her heart skip a beat.

WE WERE SURPRISED TO DISCOVER YOU HAVE A DEGREE IN CRIMINOLOGY; AT WHAT POINT DID YOU MAKE THE PROFESSIONAL SWITCH TO FASHION? Lots of people are surprised to learn that! I was planning on writing my LSAT after university so I decided to work at a law firm for my degree’s practicum. It was the best experience I had— being completely involved in personal injury law and speaking to clients, witnesses and working hands on with court cases. It was during that time though that I realized while I loved Criminology and Law, I was too much of a busy body and too creative to sit behind a desk everyday. I

took some time off from school to really think about what I wanted to pursue, and fashion was something that always came to mind. It was then that I began looking into my options and exploring fashion schools in Vancouver. WHO OR WHAT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR LOVE OF STYLE AND CLOTHING? To be honest, I have no idea! At a really young age my cousin and I used to put on our moms’ high heels and walk around on tile floors because we liked the sound they made. As long as I can remember I have always loved clothes and looking at what other people are

STYLE & BEAUTY wearing. In elementary school I was fascinated by my younger teachers and what they wore; I remember always thinking to myself that I wanted to be like them and wear what they wore when I grew up. WE OFTEN THINK HOW FABULOUS IT WOULD BE TO TIME TRAVEL THROUGH DIFFERENT ERAS IN FASHION; WHICH PERIOD WOULD YOU MOST WANT TO VISIT? I’ve always loved the fashions of the 1920s. It was a time for women to express themselves in a whole new light; hemlines became shorter and clothing became less restrictive. I would love to see firsthand such huge changes being made in fashion. WHICH ITEM IN YOUR OWN WARDROBE IS NEAREST AND DEAREST TO YOUR HEART? Opening day of the store I wore a navy blue tunic. The piece itself is nice, but it’s the memory associated with it that makes me love it. It reminds me of my very first buying trip and how stressed and excited I was for this new venture; I’ll keep it forever as a reminder about that special time in my life. WE THINK EVERY FRAMEWORK GIRL HAS A SENTIMENTAL PIECE IN HER CLOSET! HAVE YOU ALWAYS DREAMT OF OPENING YOUR OWN BOUTIQUE? I think I speak for all women and girls when I say that at some point everyone wants to own their own boutique; the thought of having access to racks and racks of clothing seems like a dream come true! But in all honesty, this idea only began when I was in fashion school and was learning more about entrepreneurship and small business. Being a lover of all things fashion, and often getting asked by friends or complete strangers where I bought an article of clothing, the wheels began to turn and the idea of opening of my own boutique quickly overtook my daily thoughts.

THAT’S WHEN YOU KNOW IT’S AN IMPORTANT IDEA. WAS THIS NEIGHBORHOOD ALWAYS YOUR TOP CHOICE FOR LOCATION? Yes! In 2000 my family moved to South Surrey and while I loved the area I always thought that it lacked a great women’s boutique. Throughout the years I found myself having to drive into Vancouver to find items I wanted, and I always felt that if I thought there was a lack of options in the area, surely there were many other women thinking the same thing. I couldn’t be happier with my decision to open at Morgan Crossing. THREE YEARS AFTER OPENING MUSE, WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THE STORE VERSUS THE REALITY? Looking back now, I know I was eager and naïve when the store first opened. I strongly believed that people would just flock to the store! It didn’t take long to learn that I had to work really hard at building relationships with clients in order for that to happen. When we first opened, there were a few other women’s boutiques in the area. Three years later, most of them have closed for various reasons, so I’m very aware how blessed I am for the success of Muse. Something we talk a lot about at the store with my girls is the fact that our clients have the choice to shop anywhere they want, but they choose us; I am very grateful for that. It makes me and my employees work that much harder to give our clients everything they’re looking for. WHAT FACTORS HAVE BEEN MOST IMPORTANT IN THE SUCCESS OF THE STORE? Social media is a huge one, most definitely. Being connected to our clients through Facebook, Instagram and Twitter has really changed our business, as they can see immediately what is new in the store and can “shop” from the comfort of their own homes. In-store events have been another big factor for us; they’re always a great time and an opportunity for our clients to have a glass of wine and get their hands on new arrivals. Also, knowing our demographic—what their

day-to-day activities look like, what they do in the evenings or on the weekends—is so important. WE COULDN’T AGREE MORE. HAVE YOUR PERCEPTIONS OF THE FASHION INDUSTRY CHANGED? Yes! I just returned from a 12 day buying trip in LA and Vegas and I am exhausted—mentally, physically and emotionally. I used to think that the fashion industry was glamorous; you get to work with clothing all day, how difficult could it be? But I have quickly learned, as a retailer and buyer, that there is nothing easy about this industry. I am thinking seasons and months ahead at all times trying to forecast what my clients will be looking for. I have no crystal ball, which makes this business hard and trying at times, but also very exciting! WHEN BUYING, HOW DO YOU DISTILL THE MYRIAD OF FALL TRENDS TO THOSE THAT WILL WORK FOR YOUR CUSTOMER?

It’s really easy to get overwhelmed and excited when buying for a new season, so I have to constantly ask myself, “Which client from the store could I see wearing this?” Often I’ll get a few names and faces popping into my mind, which is ideal. I also have to remind myself who my clients are, and what their day-to-day routines look like and then look for pieces that compliment their lives. If I find pieces that I love, and that I think our clients will love, then they make the cut. It sounds like a simple process, but sometimes it can be hard to stay focused and on track when you’re seeing so many exciting pieces. THE FULL NAME OF THE STORE—MUSE SOCIAL FASHION HOUSE—SUGGESTS THAT BUILDING YOUR COMMUNITY IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS, IF NOT MORE THAN, THE PRODUCT. DOES THIS AFFECT THE WAY YOU RUN THE BUSINESS? Definitely—from the beginning our community has been very important to us and still continues

STYLE & BEAUTY to be top of my list. Our clients are not only clients, but friends as well; when they walk through the doors, I want them to feel like they’re coming into a friend’s home. I love when a client stops by and sometimes just needs someone to talk to. My team and I know that these ladies can choose anywhere to go, but they choose to come to Muse, and I am forever thankful and proud of that. THEY ARE CERTAINLY LOYAL; WORD OF YOUR MUSE PARTIES TRAVELS FAR! WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE STORE EVENT THUS FAR? They all hold a special spot in my heart but if I had to choose, the first ever in-store event— our One Year Anniversary Party—is the most memorable for me. I could never have dreamed how busy we would be that night. I was literally running around the entire evening and the time just flew by! Once the doors closed and I had the opportunity to take in everything, it really hit me how much of a loyal following we have at the store. I was overwhelmed with gratitude and very humbled; it was a night I will never forget. SINCE THE OPENING, YOU'VE UNDOUBTEDLY LEARNED A LOT, NOT ONLY ABOUT YOUR CLIENTELE, BUT YOURSELF. WHAT ARE THE GREATEST REALIZATIONS YOU'VE HAD PERSONALLY? I have learned that I’m stronger than I sometimes give myself credit for and that hard work really does pay off. I’ve become more patient and understanding that success takes time and doesn’t happen overnight. I’ve also learned that it’s important to build and maintain relationships—I always refer to my staff as my family and it will always be important to me to treat them that way. Muse wouldn’t be what it is today without each and every one of them. WHERE DO YOU SEE THE BUSINESS IN ANOTHER THREE YEARS? There are lots of ideas running through my mind about the future of Muse—we could open another

location or start an on-line store—but whatever we decide to do, it will take careful planning and assessing. I think it is so important to really think about what you want your next step to be and not to jump too fast. I want to ensure it makes sense for the Muse family and our clients. THAT IS GREAT ADVICE. LASTLY, THE FRAMEWORK GIRL TAKES PLEASURE IN THE SMALLEST OF DETAILS. WHAT MOMENTS IN YOUR DAY-TO-DAY MAKE YOU THE HAPPIEST? There are three things that I look forward to in my day, everyday. The first is my morning workout; I haven’t always been consistent with my dedication of going to the gym, but I’m happy to say that I have been back on the bandwagon for the past few months and I can tell how much a workout positively impacts the rest of my day. Second on my happiness list is having my morning cup of peppermint tea; there’s something very soothing and calming about peppermint tea for me, and I have to have one every morning. And thirdly, connecting with people during the day makes me happy; this includes everyone who is important to me. A short visit or even exchanging a text message with someone just so they know you’re thinking of them, those types of small gestures mean the most to me. fw

YOU'RE ORIGINALLY FROM CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA. WHEN DID YOU MAKE THE MOVE TO VANCOUVER? I moved with my parents and sister to Canada in 2002. We first moved to Toronto—for a short time—before deciding British Columbia would be a better fit for our lifestyle. We visited friends who lived in Whistler and never left. My parents and dear Grandpa Dessi still live there. I try to get up there as often as possible; it’s my favorite place to relax and recharge. HAVE YOU ALWAYS DREAMT OF WORKING IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY OR DID YOU HAVE OTHER CAREER ASPIRATIONS? I always knew I wanted to be a part of the fashion industry, but was more intrigued by the business side than design. My aunt and uncle lived in New York and would send American fashion magazines to me in South Africa. It was my dream growing up to live in Manhattan and work

at a fashion magazine. It still kind of is. WHAT IS YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND, AND WOULD YOU DO IT DIFFERENTLY IF YOU WERE TO GO BACK? I took the fashion merchandising program at Blanche Macdonald, and various marketing and PR courses. Looking back, I don’t think I would have done things differently. After finishing school, I volunteered and interned at different companies, which played a big part in my success early in my career. WHAT LED YOU TO PUBLIC RELATIONS? Right after school, I landed an internship and was then hired by a woman who worked for a fashion trend forecasting company from Paris; it was an incredible opportunity! When she had to relocate to LA, we had a conversation about my career. She encouraged me to look into public & media relations. The more I learned about PR, the more

it became clear that this is what I wanted to do. SMART WOMAN! SINCE THEN, HAS ANYONE HELPED GUIDE OR SHAPE YOUR CAREER? Many people have inspired me. I learned a lot from the people I interned and worked for early on in my career; I was lucky to find opportunities where my bosses became my mentors. I also traveled to New York on various occasions to work at Fashion Week. I learned so much about the industry on these trips, and this really helped inspire me to stay the course working in fashion. YOU'RE NOTHING IF NOT WELL-CONNECTED IN VANCOUVER; HOW DO YOU APPROACH NETWORKING? Thank you! Networking is a huge part of being a publicist. Being authentic in how you present yourself is key. It’s also very important to remember people’s names when you’re introduced. You’re not networking if you can’t remember the person’s name! TOUCHÉ. IT CAN LEAD TO SOME VERY AWKWARD MOMENTS. WHY DID YOU START YOUR OWN PR FIRM? I had been working for various companies, but knew I wanted to create my own business. After doing a lot of research, I made the bold move of going freelance, and then started my agency, Lj PR in 2009. I’m really glad I had the guts to do this, as it was the best decision I could have made. It was an incredible amount of work, and very stressful, but I was determined to make it happen. GUTS MIGHT BE THE HARDEST HALF OF THE BATTLE. TELL US, WHAT IS YOUR DREAM PROJECT... I would love to be a part of the team that produced a runway show for a top tier brand like Chanel or Burberry. Runway shows are one of my favorite parts of my job, they are just so expensive and time consuming to produce. To have the

budget and manpower to produce a show that could rival those at Paris Fashion Week would be incredible! I’ve worked on many runway shows and there’s nothing quite like that magic moment when the music is blaring, the lights go up and the first model hits the runway. AN ADRENALINE RUSH MOST DEFINITELY! YOU ALSO TEACH FASHION MERCHANDISING STUDENTS AT BLANCHE MACDONALD AND WRITE A FASHION BLOG, STYLE CALLING. HOW DO YOU BALANCE SUCH A FULL SCHEDULE? I really do enjoy all three of these roles, so balance isn’t an issue; finding enough hours in the day is the real problem! I work from home, which is perfect for my lifestyle as I’m constantly on the go—being completely mobile is key in my efficiency. I’m so happy I’ve managed to create a career I’m so passionate about. All three roles compliment and work well together, and I’m often working on multiple projects at once. I’m a

true Gemini. CAN YOU SHARE MORE ABOUT EACH OF THESE ROLES? Lj PR has given me the opportunity to work with international brands, produce runway shows for incredible designers, create events, and let me use my skill set to its full potential. I also love teaching and sharing my experiences with my students. Their energy and enthusiasm reminds me to be excited about the fashion industry. They’re also a good reminder of how hard I’ve worked and how far I’ve come; there is nothing more satisfying than hearing a student say, “You’ve inspired me to go into PR.” Style Calling is my passion project. It started just over a year ago under the premises “From the desk of a fashion publicist.” The idea was to create a place where I could document and share all the stories and experiences I tell my students about the industry. Style Calling has framework

now expanded to cover fashion, beauty, trends and events. I have two contributors and have just started an interview section. I’m enjoying this role more and more as the website grows. YOU’RE A VERY BUSY GIRL! WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WORKDAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU? My day usually starts quite early as I work with a few companies on the East Coast, so my phone is buzzing from the moment I wake up. I take the first hour to have a cup of coffee, catch the morning news and check social media before getting down to business. Emails, conference calls, meetings; every day is different. My job is never boring. HOW DID YOU EXPAND FROM THE WORLD OF PR INTO TEACHING? I kept a close relationship with Blanche Macdonald after graduating. I helped create the PR program and then was asked if I would teach it. I’ve been teaching at Blanche Macdonald for almost 5 years now. 2 years ago they asked if I would take on the fashion show production class too. Runway shows are one of my favorite things to do, so this has been a really fun class to teach. Blanche Macdonald is a wonderful fashion family to be a part of. I get to discuss everything I love about the fashion industry with young, enthusiastic students on a regular basis. It’s a great environment to be in. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE MOST OFTEN TO YOUR STUDENTS? Volunteer, network and be polite to everyone you meet. Vancouver is known for being a small city; the fashion industry is even smaller. You never know how important a contact might be 5 years from now. Also, like most creative industries, working in fashion can be incredibly tough. It’s not all glasses of champagne and fabulous events. You have to be willing to put in the time and effort to succeed. There is nothing glamorous about being on set for twelve plus hours!

SEEING YOUR STUDENTS SUCCEED MUST BE SO REWARDING. It is! For example, Josh Langston was a student of mine in 2009. He worked with me on numerous projects and always came to set with a positive attitude. He was often the first to arrive, and last to leave. Now, he’s editor in chief of The Social Life Magazine. I’m very proud of Josh. It’s fantastic to see all his hard work pay off. AS YOU PREPARE YOUR STUDENTS FOR THEIR CAREERS IN FASHION, ARE THERE ANY ASPECTS OF THE LOCAL INDUSTRY THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE CHANGE? I’ve seen dramatic changes in the Vancouver fashion industry over the past 5 years. We’re seeing bigger and better events, and more international companies expand their budgets to include Vancouver. It’s definitely improving and I hope to see this continue. Throughout my career I’ve had the opportunity to work with

many talented local designers. It’s such a hard industry to be in, and I’d like to see more support for local designers and entrepreneurs. WHEN YOU HAVE A SERIOUS LOVE OF ALL THINGS STYLE, FALL FASHION IS HARD TO BEAT. WHICH ITEMS TOP YOUR MUST-HAVE LIST? Like most fashion girls, I’m so excited for fall! I have my eye on a pair of black Rag & Bone ankle boots—perfect for running around the city in. I’m also on the lookout for a classic beige trench coat. It’s the ideal item for fall in Vancouver. IF MONEY WERE NO OBJECT, WHICH DESIGNER'S COLLECTION WOULD YOU WANT IN YOUR CLOSET THIS SEASON? Ooh, wouldn’t that be amazing? I’d have to say Prabal Gurung. His Fall 2013 collection was so beautiful and the runway show was incredible!

KEEPING UP TO DATE WITH ALL THE TRENDS AND INDUSTRY NEWS BOTH LOCALLY AND NATIONALLY IS A BIG PART OF YOUR BLOG, STYLE CALLING. WHAT IS YOUR BEST RESOURCE? Other publicists. Being a publicist myself, I know what clients are looking for in a feature. Working with other PR people is by far my best resource for information. They provide press releases, fact sheets, images – it makes my job as an editor that much easier. This was actually one of the motivating factors in starting Style Calling. I work with so many fantastic PR people, and I would be invited to incredible events. I wanted to help spread the word and contribute to their media hits. I have access to a lot of cool information through my line of work and now I get to share it with a broader audience online.
