EDITOR'S LETTER

dear... June might just be my favourite month, and not only because it’s my birthday! Marking the official start of summer, June is filled with long days (thank you summer soltice), warm breezes, lush blooms, and endless opportunities for outdoor entertaining. With that in mind, we’ve sourced everything you’ll need to be the hostess with the mostess. From an in-depth guide to throwing your own wine tasting (complete with a glossary, downloadable wine score cards, and delicious recipes), to easy décor updates for the patio, throwing stylish summer parties will be a breeze. Spending a whimsical afternoon at the home of cover girl Tamara Taggart, our imaginations ran wild as we experienced a girly garden-themed party through the eyes of Tamara’s young daughters, Zoë and Poppy. With flower crowns, hand-painted sugar cookies, and cake galore, Tamara’s fête mixes English countryside with modern glam, showing us how to bring the outdoors in when the weather is less than favourable. As unpredictable weather reigns this

BOOK CLUB THE GRAND HOTEL

EVERY MONTH WE CHOOSE THREE MUST-READ BOOKS, FROM RECENT RELEASES TO OLD FAVOURITES, THAT WOULD FIT INTO ANY FRAMEWORK GIRL’S BOOK CLUB. IT’S JUST ONE MORE EXCUSE TO GET TOGETHER WITH FRIENDS OVER SWEET TREATS AND COCKTAILS!

by Sara Constantineau

Grand Hotel: Redesigning Modern Life, the current

exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery that runs until September 15, is an ambitious look at how hotels have shaped our culture, media, and lifestyles. Whether it’s a cheap motel off the highway or a luxurious oceanfront resort, a hotel is a place where hospitality meets all walks of life, providing an escape from the everyday where you never know who or what is around the corner. These three books all relate to the transient, anonymous, and romantic qualities of hotels and the people inside them.

GRAND HOTEL BY VICKY BAUM

3.5 / 5

THE STORY

A disparate group of six strangers are all staying in the same posh Berlin hotel: a moody Russian ballerina, a high-profile businessman, an attractive ingénue, a charming con artist, an emotionally wounded doctor, and a terminally-ill accountant. Their seemingly unconnected lives are all woven together when they stay under one roof, where tensions rise as soon as they start to cross paths.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

The inspiration for the classic Oscar-winning film starring Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford, Grand Hotel delves deep into the lives of all its characters for a voyeuristic look at different relationship dynamics, with lots of sextinged scandal, fully-realized characters, and a narrative that reveals a unique perspective on late-1920s Berlin.

HEADS IN BEDS

3/5

BY JACOB TOMSKY

THE STORY

Jacob Tomsky began his career in the hotel industry as an unemployed postgrad-turned-valet, and he ended up spending the next several years working his way up the chain of command. His resulting memoir details the unwritten, unspoken codes of conduct that every hotel employee understands, the high-pressure demands of such a customerfacing industry, and some not-so-discreet secrets about the numerous guests he has encountered along the way.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

Tomsky spent ten years working in virtually every facet of the hotel industry, so he can deliver an insider’s look at how hotels run behind the scenes and what kinds of characters run through the halls. This memoir combines hilarious, stranger-than-fiction anecdotes and observations with some sneaky tips for how to make the most of any hotel stay.

BEST FOR: LEARNING HOW TO RAID A MINIBAR FOR FREE

NAKED LUNCH BY WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS

4/5

THE STORY

This stream of consciousness tale follows drug addict William Lee on his wandering adventures through America, Mexico, and beyond. Burroughs draws on his own experiences with drug addiction to create a highly subjective and personal story that rejects narrative conventions, replacing them with haunting, obscenity-laced imagery that describes moments and feelings instead of plot.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

Inspired by the vagabond nature enabled by the modern hotel, Naked Lunch is a collection of loosely connected chapters you can read in any order, creating an almost dream-like, hazy world that evokes the aesthetic of the Beat generation that brought in a new era of American culture and literature.

WINETRIO

tasting: BC Chardonnay W R ITT E N BY S O P H I E C O L L I N S

British Columbia has some amazing wines, and since Canada’s most western province is also home to Framework, we thought we’d let you in on some of our best summer Chardonnays! Chardonnay is a great grape to have on hand for those people who find the acidity in Sauvignon Blanc a little overwhelming. Also, because it is a little more full bodied than a light summer white, it will pair famously with the food you serve at your next warm weather gathering!

everyday table $

BLASTED CHURCH UNORTHODOX CHARDONNAY 2012 $18.50

This wine has a refreshing hint of tropical fruit on the nose. With tastes of citrus, it’s fresh but has a little something extra that lingers on your palate while you enjoy your meal. We would pair this with a grilled fish, some prawn skewers, or for the meat lovers out there, a delicious roast chicken.

dinner party $$

BLUE MOUNTAIN RESERVE CHARDONNAY 2010 $25.90

Blue Mountain is producing some of the best BC wine out there and this Chardonnay is no exception. Unlike many other whites, you can actually age this wine up to 7 years… but it might just be too good to save that long! There is a bit more to this wine than your typical white, as it has a complex, fruit-forward and floral taste.

special occasion $$$

JOIE FARM RESERVE CHARDONNAY 2010 $35.00

While aging a Chardonnay in oak usually imparts a big, buttery flavour into the wine, the taste of the Joie Reserve Chardonnay is surprisingly crisp, citrusy, and laced with some stone fruit. The best pairing for this wine is your favourite seafood (preferably bought straight from the boat!).

There is definitely a misconception that all Chardonnays are buttery and full of oak (the barrels in which reds and sometimes whites are aged). This month we challenge you to find a Chardonnay that you love – full of flavour, perfect for summer, and well matched with your favourite foods. FOR MORE WINES AND TIPS,VISIT SIPSAVOURSHARE.COM 16

Choose a favorite bright color or pattern and sprinkle it throughout a room—or ideally the entire home—to add a consistent and unifying theme. For instance, if you love the boldness of the cobalt, incorporate an inexpensive print with a beach scene or frame a fun swatch of blue patterned wallpaper to add dimension to your space. Make sure to find ways to repeat the color with other accessories in your home; pillows, lacquered boxes, and book covers are quick and inexpensive additions. Bring your love (or purely appreciation!) of gardening into your space with a beautiful series of floral pieces—even the addition of one bloom-inspired artwork can make a difference. To create a unique touch, choose a colored mat and crisp white frame. Whether this piece stands alone or is swapped out on a gallery wall, adding seasonal imagery will definitely enhance your home. Who knows, you may choose to keep it around throughout the coming seasons as the weather becomes gloomy. Play around with mixing in summery pieces and don't be afraid to refresh your space! PRO PAIRING CHEESE & CHARCUTERIE PLATTER + LA STELLA "LASTELLINA ROSÉ 2012"

This wine is a perfect pairing with cheese because of its intensely aromatic and off-dry nature. It’s also a great wine to start the night with and keep your taste buds refreshed.

PRO PAIRING PULLED PORK IN APPLE CRISP WITH CARAMELIZED ONIONS + 8TH GENERATION "PINOT MEUNIER ROSÉ 2012"

32

8th Generation produces some of our favourite wines, and this rosé is no exception! Slightly sweet, full of citrus, and extremely refreshing, it’s a perfect pairing for the pulled pork as it can handle the apple and strong bbq pork flavours. framework

CULTURE & LIVING

wine tasting glossary HOLD YOUR OWN WITH THIS BASIC TERMINOLOGY USED TO DESCRIBE WINE:

COLOUR

LOOK AT THE WINE WITH THE GLASS TILTED OVER A WHITE SHEET OF PAPER TO NOTICE ITS COLOUR. WHITES MAY APPEAR CLEAR, PALE YELLOW, STRAW COLOURED, AMBER, GOLDEN, OR EVEN BROWN. ROSÉS MAY POSSESS NECTARINE, ORANGE, STRAWBERRY, ROSE, OR EVEN LIGHT RUBY HUES.

AROMA

THIS IS THE SCENT OF THE WINE. AROMA IS SOMETIMES THE MOST DIFFICULT ASPECT OF WINE TASTING AS IT IS OFTEN CHALLENGING TO PINPOINT DISTINCT SCENTS. WINES CAN POSSESS SCENTS SIMILAR TO THOSE OF STONE FRUIT (PEACH, APRICOT, NECTARINE, PLUM, CHERRY, ETC.), OR THOSE OF BERRIES (BLUEBERRY, BLACKBERRY, RASPBERRY, ETC.). A WINE AROMA WHEEL IS A HELPFUL TOOL TO GUIDE YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

ACIDITY

HERE IS AN EASY WAY TO REMEMBER ACIDITY: A WINE THAT IS HIGH IN ACIDITY WILL MAKE YOUR MOUTH WATER, WHILE A WINE THAT IS LOW IN ACIDITY WILL MAKE YOUR MOUTH DRY.

TANNINS

WHILE YOU WON’T TASTE MANY TANNINS IN WHITE WINES (IF ANY), OR ROSÉS (SOMETIMES), IT IS STILL GOOD TO UNDERSTAND WHAT “TANNIC” MEANS. DO YOU KNOW THE FEELING OF TASTING AN ABUNDANTLY FLAVOURFUL RED WINE AND HAVING YOUR MOUTH ALMOST PUCKER, GOING COMPLETELY DRY? THAT MEANS THE WINE IS TANNIC. (A GREAT WAY TO GET A BETTER UNDERSTANDING IS TO PEEL A GRAPE AND EAT ONLY THE SKIN – YOU’LL SEE WHAT WE MEAN).

SWEETNESS

WINE IS CATEGORIZED BY ITS SWEETNESS: FROM DRY (NOT SWEET IN THE LEAST), TO MEDIUM DRY, TO MEDIUM (SWEETER THAN MEDIUM DRY), AND FINALLY, TO SWEET (THE SWEETEST).

FINISH

THIS WINE CHARACTERISTIC IS ONE OF THE MOST EASILY DETERMINED. IF THE FLAVOUR AND FEELING LINGERS IN YOUR MOUTH FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, THE WINE IS SAID TO HAVE A LONG FINISH. (CHEAPER WINES WILL HAVE A VERY SHORT FINISH, MEANING THEY ARE PROBABLY BETTER FOR SIPPING WITHOUT FOOD, AS OPPOSED TO ENJOYING ALONGSIDE FANCY FARE.)

framework

33

PRO PAIRING PICKLED BEET RICE WRAP WITH ARUGULA & GOAT CHEESE + HAYWIRE "GAMAY NOIR ROSÉ"

It’s difficult to pair a wine with a pickled beet, but the Haywire Rosé gets the job done. Because this wine is fresh on the palate, it works excellently to wash down the goat cheese and strong arugula flavours. PRO PAIRING STRAWBERRY, FETA AND BASIL BRIOCHE ROUND + BARTIER SCHOFIELD "ROSÉ TABLE WINE 2010"

34

The strawberry notes in this wine completely bring out the delicious strawberries in this crostini. The fresh basil is a great companion for this flavourful rosé, while the light dusting of crumbled feta adds a nice contrast to the sweeter notes. framework

seared albacore tuna skewer with pickled ginger RECIPE BY

CHEF BRANDON DAC EDGECEPTIONAL CATERING

CULTURE & LIVING INGREDIENTS / YIELD 8 • 6oz albacore tuna loin, trimmed to 6”x ½”x ½” • 20g Togarashi powder (found in Japanese specialty stores) • 3 tbsp canola oil • pickled ginger DIRECTIONS 1. Roll your trimmed loin in the Togarashi powder until heavily crusted. 2. Place in the freezer for 15 minutess to get the center almost frozen. This will help keep the center raw while you sear the outside. 3. Heat a small sauté pan on high heat. Add oil, wait till it smokes then sear your loin and all sides for 10-15 seconds per side. Remove from the pan and place back in the freezer for 5 minutes. 4. Remove partially frozen tuna from freezer and slice into 8 cubes. Gently fold and layer a piece of pickled ginger on top of each tuna. 5. Skewer and present on platter.

PRO PAIRING 8TH GENERATION "RIESLING 2012" The 8th Generation Riesling is refreshing, lingers long, and is perfect with the tuna as it has a slight floral flavour that complements the searing, and a slight minerality that is perfect with the pickled ginger.

CULTURE & LIVING CAKE INGREDIENTS / YIELD 30 • 6 large egg whites (180 grams), at room temperature • 1 1/2 cups milk, at room temperature • 3 tsp. pure vanilla extract • 4 cups (15 oz) cake flour, sifted (+ extra for the cake pans) • 2 cups (15 oz) granulated sugar • 1 tbsp + 2 1/4 tsp. baking powder • 1 tsp. salt • 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature • 2 tbsp vegetable shortening DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a cupcake tin with paper liners and set aside. 2. In a small bowl, stir together the egg whites, 1/4 cup of the milk and the vanilla. 3. Sift the flour into the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Add the sugar, baking powder and salt and mix on low speed for 30 seconds to combine. 4. Add the butter, the vegetable shortening and the remaining milk. Mix on low speed just until the dry ingredients are moistened and then raise the speed to medium and beat for 1 1/2 monutes (90 seconds). Stop the mixer and scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add the egg mixture in 2 parts, beating for 30 seconds on medium speed after each addition. 5. Fill a piping bag (or a large zip-top freezer bag or you can use a spoon) half-full with the batter, snip the tip off the end and fill the cupcake liners almost to the top.You can also spoon or pour the batter in, whatever works for you! 6. Bake for 20 - 22 minutes, until the tops are a very light golden brown. Let the cupcakes cool in the tin for 10 minutes before placing on a wire rack to finish cooling.

RASPBERRY CREAM CHEESE FROSTING INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract • 1/2 tsp salt • 1/3 cup seedless raspberry jam or seedless raspberry puree • 5-6 cups confectioners'/powdered sugar, sifted • 1 cup (8 oz) full-fat cream cheese, softened at room temperature for about 2 hours • Pink food colouring

DIRECTIONS

1. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, place the butter, salt and vanilla. Mix on medium speed for 30 seconds to combine. Add the raspberry jam and mix. 2. Sift the confectioners' sugar into a large bowl. This is an important step because unsifted sugar will cause your frosting to be lumpy, and no one wants lumps! Pour about 5 cups of the sugar into the butter/ jam mixture and mix on low speed until just combined. Add the cream cheese and mix until smooth. Add a few drops of pink food colouring and mix in. The frosting will be quite runny. If you feel it is too runny, add a little more of the confectioners' sugar. Scrape the frosting into a smaller bowl, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm, at least 3 hours or overnight. 3. To frost, fit a pastry bag with whatever piping tip you'd like, fill the bag halfway with the cream cheese frosting and pipe swirls onto your cupcakes. Enjoy! framework

SPEND A FEW MINUTES WITH THE BAGS AND THE BOSS LADY, AND YOU’LL UNDOUBTEDLY BE SMITTEN. “I think I’m pretty fierce and pretty individual,” says Larissa Stefani, Creative Director of Lloyd & Wolf Couture, a limited-run, handcrafted leather accessories company that prides itself on reflecting the distinctiveness of its customers. “I don’t like having what anybody else has…I want to be totally different.” Lloyd & Wolf’s line of nine bags – including totes, clutches and a backpack – exudes rock and roll with a healthy dose of class. Each unique piece consists of signature spiked hardware and gorgeous textured leathers. Limited, handcrafted production runs also mean that the bags never feature the look of the status quo. “I’ll look at the leather and to me, it says something,” says Stefani who handpicks hides from Italy, Spain and Canada. Her vision for the brand’s popular cavernous tote “Abi” took shape when she came across a water buffalo skin with a beautiful shine. Stefani recalls thinking: “That thing has to have some slouch to it. And it can’t have too much going on.” Her intuition paid off. Stefani has been recognized

for “Abi” in the 2013 Independent Handbag Designer Awards (IHDA), the prestigious international accessories competition, which has launched the careers of many of the industry’s leading designers. As one of top five finalists, she was the only Canadian designer selected from among 1,200 applicants from around the globe. Stefani started her company two years ago, after taking a hiatus from the fashion world to have her children. After a devastating diagnosis of Lyme disease, Stefani launched Lloyd & Wolf. “I quite desperately needed something to do rather than feeling sorry for myself, and wanted to think about something other than my symptoms,” says Stefani, who previously worked in the fashion industry for ten years. “Having a creative outlet has always been very positive for me and I was keen to learn about, and work with leather. I’ve always loved handbags, so it was a natural progression.” From experimenting with leather belts on her

dining room table to creating bags donned by celebrities, Stefani has built the rising Canadian label one step at a time. Her journey came with its own set of challenges. “When I first started coming out with prototypes, I was told, ‘No, no, we’re not going to [make] those for you,’” recalls Stefani who was determined to fill a void in the marketplace with unique, luxury leather bags. “I guess, in a sense, I wore them down here in Vancouver and they saw that I was serious and that I was actually going to do something about this.” Winners of the seventh annual IHDA competition will be announced on June 19th in New York City. So what does Stefani think of the recognition? “Being recognized as a top talent in my field? It’s crazy! This is the Academy Awards of Handbags! I am incredibly honoured to have my bag considered by such an esteemed organization as the IHDA,” she says. fw

FASHION JOBS IN CANADA // FIND YOUR DREAM JOB, TODAY.

face time HOW TO SELECT SIZZLING SUMMER SUNNIES FOR YOUR FACE SHAPE

Catch shade this summer and avoid squinting in the sunshine with the season’s hottest accessory: a sizzling pair of sunnies. While shielding your eyes from the sun, the perfect pair should fit and flatter your face. But, finding the most complementary sunglasses can be tricky; from angular aviators to cool cat eyes, where does one begin? This month Framework uncovers the art of selecting your best shades with a personalized style guide to keep BY MEGAN CORREIA your warm weather wardrobe on budget and trend.

your shape:

UNDER $50

ROUND

A round-shaped face is equal in length and width with full cheeks and little to no angles. If you have a round face, your goal when looking for sunglasses is to find a pair that will make it look longer and leaner.

Mossimo Women’s Square Sunglasses, Target, $16

UNDER $100

Nine West Way Fair Met, Kurt Geiger, $70

SUNNIES THAT SUIT

Slightly angular frames create a narrowing effect, which helps to define facial features and flatter your face. Look for sunnies that are wider than tall, in order to add angles to your softer shape. 50

your shape:

STYLE & BEAUTY UNDER $50

HEART

Heart-shaped faces are characterized by their wider foreheads, narrow jaw line and chin, and high cheekbones. For frames that flatter, shop for sunnies that will draw attention away from a narrow chin or a high forehead.

Topshop Metal Arm Cats Eye Sunglasses, $25

UNDER $100

SUNNIES THAT SUIT

The most flattering frames for heart-shaped faces are wide near the eyes but narrow towards the chin. Choose a butterfly or swept-up frame like chic cat-eyes to accentuate your shape best. These styles work to balance your face by minimizing the width up top while offsetting the slim lines of your chin.

Finding Your Fit // AFTER YOU’VE FOUND THE SUITABLE STYLE AND PERFECT PAIR

OF SUNNIES TO FLATTER YOUR FACE, CONSIDER THESE FIT TIPS WHEN TESTING YOUR SHADES:

• Frames should fit snuggly on your nose or ears, so they won’t slip off your face, but they should also be loose enough to not leave any indentations or marks on your nose or behind your ears. • Your eyelashes should not touch the frame. If they do, chances are your sunglasses are too small for your face shape. • Metal or wire frames can be adjusted easily to fit your face by bending the frame ever so slightly. framework

51

your shape:

UNDER $50

OVAL

Because of its symmetrically balanced proportions, virtually any style of sunglasses will suit an oval-shaped face. The goal is to find frames that are proportional to your features, which tend to be smaller; avoid selecting sunnies that will overwhelm or unbalance your shape.

SUNNIES THAT SUIT

Lucky you—if you have an oval-shaped face, you can wear almost anything! Test drive the hottest eyewear trends and experiment with colourful frames that complement your skin tone, or try shapes that add interest, like oversized square frames with slightly rounded edges.

Mango Neon Sunglasses, $24.99

UNDER $100

Ralph by Ralph Lauren Oval Sunglasses, Lord & Taylor, $79

UNDER $300

Ray-Ban Icons Sunglasses, Shopbop, $165

Take Care // CARE FOR YOUR SUNNIES—ESPECIALLY IF YOU’VE INVESTED A PRETTY PENNY—BY CLEANING THEM REGULARLY. FOLLOW THESE CLEANING CARE STEPS:

• Use a soft, lint-free cloth like microfiber to clean your lenses and avoid scratches when polishing. • Avoid using porous materials like paper towels, tissue and toilet paper to wipe down your lenses, as they will leave scratches and lint behind. • Dry lenses are more susceptible to scratches so be sure to use a spray-on cleanser or wet with water before cleaning and polishing.

52

framework

STYLE & BEAUTY UNDER $50

SQUARE

Square-shaped faces feature a strong, defined jawline and broad forehead with a wide chin and cheekbones; you’ll want to find a frame that elongates your face. Try to avoid any sharp or angular sunglasses, as these frames will exaggerate your shape, making it look wider and larger.

SUNNIES THAT SUIT

Soften your angles with rounded frames that will highlight your best features and draw attention away from the jawline. Look for frames with some curve or uplift to accentuate and give the appearance of softer lines.

Ad Ons // ACCESSORIZE WITH THE COOLEST GEAR FOR YOUR SUMMER SUNNIES: • A decorative hard-shell or padded case serves style and functionality. Buy one to keep your sunnies protected when off-duty. • Keep a small cleaning cloth handy at the bottom of your sunglasses case to polish your lenses while on the go. • A visor-mounted car clip keeps your sunnies safely stored and easily accessible while not in use on the road. framework

BEACH BBQ When the occasion calls for a casual approach, try mixing fun, bright colours for a look that pops. Saturated hues like banana yellow and popsicle pink pack a big punch when paired together, and with coloured denim going strong this season you’ll have no—ahem— shortage of options…

ACCESSORIZE

A relaxed sun hat and colourful statement necklace are great ways to add some personality to this otherwise laid back look. These fashion favourites make all the difference between so-so and so-stylish when wearing basics.

CHEEKY DOES IT Style should be fun, and for that we adore graphic tees! To keep the mood of your outfit light, throw on a playful tee like this “Sun your buns” style by Maison Scotch.

SHINE BRIGHT We adore a bold colour for the work place. This watermelon blazer is the perfect way to brighten up any lunch meeting, and will easily transition to other outfits and from work to play.

WHITE OUT Crisp and clean, these white walking shorts get our top vote for summer ready office style. A completely blank canvas, they’ll be the backdrop to all your printed tops, or if you’re feeling bold, a great starting point for head-totoe white.

DATE NIGHT Keep cool on those hot summer nights by opting for a pair of gam-bearing shorts. Sexy shorts are a playful alternative to your go-to LBD, and we’re willing to bet they’ll swiftly make their way to the top of your evening attire short-list…

BARELY THERE Soft and wispy, sheer fabrics are perfect for a night out. To keep them guessing, be sure to invest in a natural coloured bra to ensure people are looking at your top and not what’s underneath.

POWER PLAY Go bold with a strong hue for your bottom half. With so many bright colours available this season, staying away from black is easier than ever. Elevate this look further by adding a vivid tangerine clutch and some pretty sparkly baubles to complete your ensemble.

Since the bust is one of the best assets on an apple shape, enhance your cleavage with a swimsuit that supports. An underwire or halter shape, thick straps and enough material coverage will keep the girls in their rightful place. To strike a balance between the upper and lower half of your body, try mixing and matching different coloured bikini tops and bottoms. Draw attention to your hips with a bright or printed bottom and minimize your upper half with a darker or solid top. Since your hips and thighs are on the slimmer side, take advantage of the opportunity to sport a string bikini bottom; the apple shape can really pull it off!

I wanted to lend a voice to the “everygirl,” and help women to feel empowered by information, removing insecurity from the picture.

HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN A BEAUTY JUNKIE? One hundred percent. I have been obsessed with makeup since my very first doll, “Little Miss Makeup.” There are even photos of me doing my own makeup for Halloween at two years old! I was a gypsy with beautiful blue eye shadow and bright red lips—luckily, I now know better than to wear them at the same time… NOW THOSE ARE PRICELESS PHOTOS. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST MAKEUP PURCHASE AS A KID? WOULD YOU STILL USE IT TODAY? Bonne Bell Lip Smackers. They were slightly tinted, and tasted and smelled like candy: a must at seven years old but I probably wouldn’t use them today. PRETTY MUCH A STAPLE OF ANY PRE-TEEN GIRL! NOW, WHAT IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVOURITE BEAUTY OR SKIN CARE PRODUCT? THE ONE THAT WOULD DEVASTATE YOU IF DISCONTINUED! As a beauty editor, I’m always testing out new products, and jump around a lot because of this, but I have a couple that fall into the holy grail category: I couldn’t live without my L’Oréal Voluminous mascara or Dermalogica Microfoliant— please keep these around forever.

STYLE & BEAUTY Thank you; that’s so nice to hear! Like most bloggers, I was looking for a little piece of something to use as a creative outlet. I was really tired of blogs that were all about buying this or needing that to be perfect. I wanted to lend a voice to the “everygirl,” and help women to feel empowered by information, removing insecurity from the picture. I’m self-deprecating and authentic by nature and I wanted that to come across in my blog. THAT’S A REFRESHING STANCE TO TAKE. TELL US, WHO ARE YOUR PERSONAL BEAUTY ICONS? I love natural and classic beauties like Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe—thick brows, a classic red lip, and polished skin and hair get me every time. Also, Gwyneth Paltrow just radiates an inner beauty that is completely magnetic, so she’s definitely on my list. Lately, I love Jessica Alba’s look; she’s always polished and trying out a new makeup trend. Aside from celebs, my Mom is still the most beautiful woman I know. WE ADORE THIS LIST! WHERE DO YOU FIND THE BEST SOURCES OF INSPIRATION? There is the obvious choice— Pinterest—but I would definitely say online. I read beauty blogs, visit online beauty retailers, and surround myself with an online community that is passionate about the subject. Street style is

always a source of inspiration for me—I love seeing what other women, including my friends, are doing with their look. WHICH SUMMER BEAUTY TRENDS HAVE YOUR ATTENTION THIS YEAR?

remembered that my naturally curly hair turns into the shape of a lampshade if it’s cut too short... But, I love the style on others. YOU REVIEW A LOT OF PRODUCTS ON THE SPARKLE AND ON THE GLITTER GUIDE; CAN YOU SHARE YOUR CURRENT MUST-HAVES?

The bold lip: think magenta or hot coral with a nearly naked face—it’s the epitome of summer chic to me. I was also tempted I love Almay’s new liquid lip to try the long bob hairstyle balms—they’re smooth and not but came to my senses after I sticky. I recently tried out Kevyn framework

If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing. I don’t believe in giving negative publicity, but if it’s a great product, I’ll shout it from the rooftops.

Aucoin’s The Volume Mascara for beauty.com, and was blown away; it gave me some serious volume and length. Also, Oribe’s Texturizing Spray is phenomenal because it touches up day old hair and adds clean volume to the roots of freshly washed, or half day hair. THOSE DO SOUND AMAZING. WHAT CRITERIA MUST A PRODUCT HAVE TO MEET YOUR STANDARDS AND BE WORTHY OF PUBLISHING? I love this question! There are a lot of products that don’t make the cut. I consider price point, ingredients, packaging and results when I’m recommending something. If I’m going to feature anything on The Sparkle, it has to be something I would buy again or recommend to a loved one. I have a policy I always stick to: if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing. I don’t believe in giving negative publicity, but if it’s a great product, I’ll shout it from the rooftops. THAT'S A GOOD POLICY FOR MORE THAN PRODUCT RECOMMENDATIONS! IN YOUR NINE YEARS AS A MAKEUP ARTIST, WHAT HAVE YOU FOUND TO BE WOMEN’S MOST COMMON BEAUTY DILEMMAS? Skin. AS YOU MENTIONED, GREAT FACE ALWAYS STARTS WITH FLAWLESS SKIN. HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR FOUNDATION IS RIGHT FOR YOU? Your foundation should feel invisible, never heavy or thick, and it should enhance your skin, not cover it up. Most women, unless they have serious pigmentation concerns, only need a light coverage foundation like a tinted moisturizer with spot corrections in the way of concealer on blemishes. My favourites also have a built in SPF so that you can skip the extra step in your routine. CAN YOU GIVE US A RUNDOWN OF COMMON BEAUTY INGREDIENTS AND

WHAT THEY MEAN FOR OUR SKIN? Vitamins like A, C and E are essential for healthy skin. Hyaluronic acid brings moisture into the skin to give it a temporary plumping effect. Alpha hydroxy acids—like glycolic and lactic—exfoliate to refine pores. Essential oils are a wonderful source of all kinds of skin nutrients, and silicon fills in gaps like lines and pores for a temporary smoothing effect. WHAT WE PUT ON OUR FACE SEEMS TO BE EQUALLY IMPORTANT AS WHAT WE PUT IN OUR BODIES. WHAT INGREDIENTS SHOULD BE AVOIDED? Look for products with as few fillers in them as possible. These include chemicals like parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate and propylene glycol, which are carcinogenic, along with synthetic colours and fragrance that are irritating and sensitizing. Also, mineral oil is a cheap ingredient that gives viscosity to a product but clogs pores… I could go on! And like you mentioned, it’s essential to add healthy foods into our diet if we want to look great and age gracefully. WHICH INGREDIENTS SHOULD WE LOOK FOR? Just like with food, look for words you can pronounce. Peptides, vitamins, essential oils and natural fragrance are all ideal ingredients to see on the

label. ARE NATURAL BEAUTY PRODUCTS REALLY BETTER FOR US OR IS THIS JUST ANOTHER TREND? Any time we can go a more natural route, it’s a great thing. Some of the most effective skin care ingredients can be found in their natural form. Vitamins—which aren’t always from a natural source, so be wary—and essential oils like neroli (smoothes texture) and maracuja (full of natural vitamin C to boost collagen) are powerhouses. Some of my favourite anti-aging and moisturizing products are simply blends of essential oils. FOR THOSE WANTING TO GO ALL-NATURAL WITH THEIR BEAUTY ROUTINE BUT DON’T WANT TO SACRIFICE PERFORMANCE, WHICH BRANDS DO YOU RECOMMEND? There are so, so many and nothing is more exciting to me than effective, all-natural beauty products. There are plenty on the market: Tata Harper makes truly powerful one hundred percent natural products full of active and effective ingredients, Kjaer Weis is a one hundred percent natural makeup line that I love, and Weleda is a great drugstore line—their products are free from the harmful stuff, but not completely natural. Natural products are often a little bit pricier but I choose to view them as an investment in

one’s health and well-being. They are also usually quite concentrated, so a small bottle goes a long way. THIS IS A GREAT STARTING POINT. WITH SUMMER JUST AROUND THE CORNER, WHICH ESSENTIAL CHANGES SHOULD WE MAKE TO OUR BEAUTY AND SKIN CARE ROUTINES? Think lighter in terms of your makeup; switch to dewier, more forgiving formulations like tinted moisturizers—no obvious streaking when you sweat— cream blushes and creamy lip products. Add an SPF into your routine whether it is in your day cream, primer or tinted moisturizer, and don’t forget about SPF protection for the eye area. TELL US YOUR THOUGHTS ON ANTI-AGING PRODUCTS; DO THEY ACTUALLY WORK, AND HOW EARLY SHOULD WE START USING THEM? Brands know how to leverage our fear of aging; product adverts contain promises they just can’t keep! Some work, some do not. This is the part of my new business I’m looking forward to the most: taking the guess work out of a woman’s anti-aging skin care routine, educating her about what really works, and what isn’t worth the splurge. A great anti-aging routine should start in your twenties—it’s really never too early to take care of your face, neck, chest and hands! fw framework

CONSISTENCY IS KEY WITH SKIN CARE YOU MAY NOT SEE THE RESULTS OVERNIGHT, BUT YOU’LL CHANGE THE WAY YOU AGE OVER TIME. WEAR A RED LIP WITH CONFIDENCE YOU LOOK GREAT IN RED, I PROMISE. SHAPE AND FILL IN YOUR EYEBROWS IT WILL TRANSFORM YOUR FACE. TAKE CARE OF YOUR HANDS, NECK AND CHEST THEY ARE THE FIRST AREAS TO SHOW SIGNS OF AGING. THIS MEANS DAILY MOISTURIZING AND SPF. CULTURE & LIVING YOU HAVE A LONGTIME LOVE OF SWEETS; WHAT ARE THE KEY ELEMENTS OF A FANTASTIC DESSERT? When I was a little girl, every Friday my dad would take me to a different bakery to go on what he liked to call a “goody run.” From cinnamon rolls with extra frosting to decadent cakes, he would always let me pick one or two—or even five—things out. From all my years of eating dessert, I would have to say that a fantastic dessert has the whole package: consistency with perfectly balanced flavor components and style. Most importantly, flavor and consistency are a must! WHAT A—PARDON THE PUN—SWEET WAY TO SPEND TIME WITH YOUR DAD! HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR TALENT FOR DESSERT STYLING? I’ve been into party planning since junior high school but it wasn’t until I hosted my sister inlaw’s baby shower five years ago that I realized I have a deep passion for styling parties and entertaining. And of course, my all-time favorite element of planning any party is styling the desserts. I love that you can tie the entire theme of a party together by coordinating extra details on an array of desserts. But, I’ve also styled outfits, craft projects and even interior design with desserts! In the end, it all goes hand in hand. BEST FRIENDS FOR FROSTING, IS A CONTRIBUTOR-BASED DIGITAL CURATION OF BAKING RECIPES, TIPS, AND TRICKS FROM ACROSS THE WEB. HOW DID THE SITE START OUT, AND HOW DID IT GROW INTO WHAT WE SEE TODAY?

I KNEW IN MY

HEART

THAT I HAD TO DO SOMETHING I WAS PASSIONATE ABOUT, SO I TOOK MY LOVE OF BAKING TO THE INTERNET AND STARTED A BLOG. offer. I helped my husband launch a website that revolved around art and music, but it wasn’t my passion so it got old for me quickly. I love that saying, “Your dream job does not exist, you have to create it.” I knew in my heart that I had to do something I was passionate about, so I took my love of baking to the Internet and started a blog. Eventually, Best Friends For Frosting took on a whole new life of it’s own! Now we have forty-five contributors, and we’re still growing. WE CAN COMPLETELY RELATE TO YOUR JOURNEY. TELL US, DID YOU ALWAYS INTEND TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

Always! My family is filled with entrepreneurs and inventors and they have always fascinated me. When I was in fifth grade I started my own business selling Stress Balls—I made them by putting playdough in water balloons and sold them at school. I made sixty dollars the first I wanted to open my own bakery. Instead of going to culinary school I decided to work at three day and within two weeks I had one wealthy piggy bank! Sadly, the principal made me close different bakeries to gain hands on experience. down my “business” because it was taking away Through this I realized that for me, creative from school fundraising… too bad we couldn’t freedom far outweighed making a profit. My join forces. But let’s face it, when I knew at ten brother is a successful full time blogger so I was really inspired to explore what the Internet had to years old that I could outsmart the principal in framework

fundraising, I knew the sky was the limit. FROM BAKERIES TO BLOGGING, HOW HAS YOUR LIFE CHANGED? I don’t miss those 4 A.M. shifts—yikes! Blogging allows me to bring my whole self to the business table, while sharing who I am and what I love. I think that’s really important. WE HEARD YOUR HUSBAND HELPED YOU BUILD THE SITE; DOES HE HAVE A REGULAR ROLE IN THE BUSINESS? Now that Andy is in-between jobs he is helping me quite a bit behind the scenes! I often tease him that we’re like Tori Spelling and her husband Dean. I especially love to bake and style parties and Andy is a phenomenal cook— no exaggeration. We have some new elements planned for Best Friends For Frosting when we re-launch the website this summer and we can’t wait to share it with you when it happens! WE’LL BE WAITING! WHAT GOES ON BEHIND THE SCENES IN A TYPICAL DAY? I get up at 5 A.M. and I am in jazzercise by six. I come home at 7 A.M. and get my son Charlie ready for pre-school, drop him off at school by seven-thirty and rush home. I spend the first hour of my day prioritizing my to-do list and responding to all of my emails. Next I hit the pedal to the metal on my to-do list; I have to remind myself daily, “Don’t work harder, work smarter,” and having a to-do list really helps me stay on track to fulfill that. The rest of the day varies, but often I’m organizing shoots, developing projects, collecting content, having phone meetings, working on our editorial calendar, doing social media, taking photos, developing recipes, gathering inspiration, meeting with potential clients for lunch and researching. Nothing ever slows down over here so I really have to budget my time and weigh out the opportunities I take on. Once the clock strikes three, I pick up Charlie from school and the rest of the afternoon and evening is one

hundred percent dedicated to family time. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE QUITE A HANDLE ON TIME MANAGEMENT! ALSO, THE COLLABORATIVE VIBE OF BFFF IS WONDERFUL—HOW DO YOU MANAGE YOUR CONTRIBUTORS? Best Friends For Frosting would not be what it is without our creative team. Making it a collaborative force has allowed us to expand our horizons without spreading ourselves too thin. We have so many talented people on our team who focus on their best strengths. When it boils down to managing our contributors, Google Drive and spreadsheets are our very best friends in the whole world; organization is key. I used to manage all of our contributors myself, but with our re-launch this summer I am taking a more hands-on approach behind the scenes, so we now have a managing editor that has taken the reigns. BEST FRIENDS FOR FROSTING MUST GET THOUSANDS OF SUBMISSIONS. WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR AND WHAT MAKES THE CUT? We love receiving submissions and the criteria for selecting which content we feature is pretty simple. Great attention to detail with terrific photo styling is a huge plus, and photos taken with a high-resolution camera are always a must! IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT BAKING-RELATED TECHNIQUE TO PERFECT? French Macarons. You have to fold the batter a certain amount of times. It’s definitely a handson technique that needs to be mastered with trial and error; I’ve only tried making them once with a girlfriend who was very experienced, and we still didn’t nail it! I think I will let macarons be that one dessert I can only buy so that I will never get tired of them. WHAT KITCHEN APPLIANCE CAN YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT?

I would be toast without my KitchenAid mixer. It’s the best thing since sliced bread! WE KNOW YOU’VE ALWAYS HAD A SWEET TOOTH. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TREAT TO EAT AS A KID? AND WHAT ABOUT NOW? When I was little I loved cupcakes but let’s be real, French Macarons are the adult version of a cupcake and I have never met a French Macaron I didn’t like. A GIRL AFTER OUR OWN HEARTS! TELL US, WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 FAVOURITE DESSERTS TO CREATE AND WHY? 1. Cupcakes because they are easy to perfect and make pretty. A handful of sprinkles and a piping bag filled with frosting can go a long way. 2. Cookies since they are such an easy crowd pleaser. Who doesn’t like cookies? 3. Milkshakes because they are so easy to develop recipes for and oh-so fun to style. SPEAKING OF STYLING, DESSERTS ARE OFTEN JUST AS MUCH PRESENTATION AS THEY ARE TASTE; DO YOU HAVE ANY TRICKS OF THE TRADE FOR BEAUTIFYING OUR BAKING? Set yourself up for creative success! Frequent local candy shops for pretty assortments to embellish your creations. Also, order pretty sprinkles online in advance so you will have plenty of options when creativity sparks you on a whim. WELL, IF YOU INSIST! ARE THERE CERTAIN TOOLS THAT MAKE DECORATING DESSERTS MUCH EASIER? WHAT ARE YOUR ESSENTIALS? One thing I wish I knew seven years ago was not to buy hundreds of dollars worth of gear. Chances are you will never end up using it all and you may even find yourself so overwhelmed with all of the equipment that you’ll steer clear of it completely. I recommend keeping it very simple. If I could do it all over again I would only buy an assortment of piping tips, piping bags, gel dyes, sprinkles, framework

YOUR WORK HAVE BEEN FEATURED IN PRINT AND ALL OVER THE WEB—TELL US ABOUT THE BIGGEST PINCH-ME MOMENT WITH BFFF SO FAR… There is never a dull moment over here. I still get excited whenever I am featured somewhere, regardless of how large the following is. One of my favorite moments was seeing one of the hosts on QVC show my picture on air with a dessert table I styled and talk about my collaboration with them. Next thing I knew, they had shown it ten more times on air; I am still tickled pink about that! THAT IS PRETTY AMAZING EXPOSURE! SPEAKING OF TELEVISION, WE LOVE YOUR NEW YOUTUBE CHANNEL—WHAT KIND OF CONTENT WILL APPEAR IN VIDEO AND HOW WILL IT GROW THE BRAND? I am so excited to dive right in to YouTube. Earlier this year I worked closely with an industry recognized videographer, Jeremiah Mayhew. We hashed out a concept and he helped me bring that vision to life. This summer we will be releasing videos on a regular weekly schedule, which will include lots of dessert recipes, behind the scenes footage and so much more. We want to make our readers feel connected to the brand and YouTube is the perfect place for that. WELL, YOU CERTAINLY LOOK AND SOUND FABULOUS ON FILM! ANY TIPS FOR THOSE WANTING TO STEP IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA? Goodness, thank you! My best advice is to be you! Talk to the camera like it’s your best friend. Make sure that your videos are short and fabulous all while having fun in the process! WHAT ELSE IS ON THE HORIZON FOR BFFF? Later this week I am styling a party for Martha Stewart’s new line of party supplies. I am also working on styling a party for Bacardi, and this summer we are re-launching Best Friends For

Frosting. Our launch party will be July 11, 2013 at West Elm in Roseville, California. Beyond that, we will be expanding into so much more than just dessert! WOW! NEXT STEP, WORLD DOMINATION? IT’S SAFE TO SAY YOUR SON WILL HAVE THE MOST AMAZING BIRTHDAY CAKES… IS IT DIFFICULT TO BALANCE THE BLOG AND BUSINESS WITH A TODDLER IN TOW? It’s always so fun when passion collides with being a mother. That’s another big pinch-me moment! This July Charlie is turning 3 years old and I am having a blast planning his animalthemed party—his request! In the beginning, balancing a business as a new mom was exhausting. When Charlie was 6 months old, I worked on Best Friends For Frosting from the moment he went to sleep until 4 in the morning. To this day, I have no idea how I did it. Now he

is in pre-school and I have set office hours. I am one of those people who likes to do as much as I can; sometimes it’s hard to accept that I can’t juggle every single thing in the world—I have to remind myself that I am mother and wife first, entrepreneur second. LASTLY, WHEN YOU’RE NOT BAKING, BLOGGING, OR STYLING SCRUMPTIOUS DESSERTS, HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME? I am a pretty simple girl at heart. A good dinner or a long walk with my family adds a lot of value to my day. Andy and I love taking Charlie for adventures around town to fill his life with rich memories—picnics are really fun too. And after everyone is asleep, if I can squeeze in a Hallmark movie while eating ice cream straight out of the carton under the covers, that is a huge extra bonus. fw framework

I BELIEVE THAT WHEN A DOOR OPENS YOU HAVE TO WALK THROUGH IT— YOU NEVER KNOW WHERE IT'S GOING TO LEAD.

WAS IT CHANCE, CIRCUMSTANCE, OR DESIRE THAT LED YOU TO BROADCASTING? A little of each... I was quite young, working in an x-ray office wondering what to do with my life when I stumbled upon a BCIT course book and found Radio Broadcasting. It appealed to me and seemed like a perfect fit. It was—my career started in radio and that path brought me to television. I'm now in my third year Anchoring CTV News at Six and I love it, it just keeps getting better. YOU ARE VERY DRIVEN IN YOUR CAREER; WHAT WERE YOU SEEKING THAT MOTIVATED YOU THROUGH THE UPS AND DOWNS? I promised myself that I would always have a job that I loved; I never wanted to wake up and dread where I was going. I have been lucky. I have always loved my job and when it was time to leave because I was feeling complacent or unhappy, I found another job. I have been at CTV for sixteen years now and I'm very happy. I have never said no to an opportunity and I believe that when a door opens you have to walk through it—you never know where it's going to lead. WERE THERE ANY MOMENTS WHEN YOU SERIOUSLY DOUBTED YOUR PATH? Never. I have always believed in myself, even when others might have had their doubts about what I was capable of achieving. I'm a very positive person and I believe that begins with following my heart. WHO HAS GIVEN YOU THE BEST ADVICE IN LIFE SO FAR? WHAT WAS IT? My grandpa. It's quite simple; from a very young age he told me to walk with a purpose. If you're walking down the street, walk like you know exactly where you're going—even if you don't. He was trying to tell me in an easy way to always act confident, even when you're not. My grandpa died before I finished BCIT and I still think about him every day; he was my best pal.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR TWENTY YEAR OLD SELF? Life is going to throw you some serious curve balls, but you can handle it. I left home when I was fifteen years old and had to find my way at a very young age. I didn't always make the best decisions and I learned some hard lessons along the way but it all lead me to where I am now and I'm grateful for that. FOR CAREER WOMEN AND MOMS ALIKE, YOU HAVE A PRETTY INSPIRING STORY. ON A PERSONAL LEVEL, TELL US ABOUT THE MOST SIGNIFICANT MOMENTS SO FAR‌ Meeting my husband Dave, getting married and having a family together; our son Beckett's birth was life altering, mostly because he was my first child and I experienced true, massive love so profoundly. Finding out that Beckett had Down syndrome five days after he was born was a huge moment; it was overwhelming in the beginning but now it rarely crosses our minds. All of our

children have made us better people. However, my most significant moment happened last year. I became very sick and nearly died; it was incredibly traumatic and completely life-altering. I still think about it every day and when the going gets tough I remember how lucky I am to be alive. YOUR PERSONAL LIFE IS OFTEN IN THE PUBLIC EYE. HOW DO YOU BALANCE BEING IN THE SPOTLIGHT WITH PRIVACY? I really struggled with privacy when we first had children, but once you have been on the cover of a magazine holding your baby it's kind of out there and there's no pulling it back. My kids have been in lots of photo shoots with me now and that's okay. I realize that because Beckett has Down syndrome, it's encouraging for other parents like me to see him having a happy, normal life. I'm a working mom trying to keep it all together; I have good days and bad days and I don't mind blogging about it or putting it on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter. Obviously there are things I'll never post, but I'm happy to share framework

our triumphs and tears. I love looking at other women's blogs and Instagram feeds! IN THIS DIGITAL AGE, IT CERTAINLY MAKES US FEEL MORE CONNECTED. THAT SAID WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? I swear... a lot. I always joke that I come from a long line of truckers and longshoremen—I do— and I swear like one too. I don't swear at home because I don't want my kids to hear it and I obviously don't swear while working on-air. I have a switch and I can easily turn it off but when the switch is on.... oh boy. BETWEEN YOUR STINT ON THE HGTV HOME DÉCOR SERIES LOVE IT OR LOSE IT TO YOUR CHILDREN’S THEMED BIRTHDAYS, IT’S SAFE TO SAY YOU’RE PRETTY CREATIVE. WHAT GETS YOU MOST EXCITED? Oh that's nice; I don't think of myself as creative but I'm working on it! Most of my friends are artists and my husband and his entire family are artists, so I'm hoping that if I surround myself with enough of them it will rub off on me. I like a good party and I want people to be happy and have fun when they come over to our house. I also want my kids to have great memories of us baking, drawing and making things. I'm a magazine junkie, I read and rip—my inspiration pile is massive. Oh, and Pinterest... oh how I love Pinterest. If only there were more hours in a day. WHERE DOES YOUR LOVE OF PARTIES COME FROM? Probably from my mom and dad and my grandparents. They all threw amazing parties and were incredibly social. I have countless photos of me as a little girl, in my pajamas, in the middle of one of my parent's parties in our "rumpus room.” If my parents weren't having a party, my grandparents were!

The babes are still so little but they are learning and it's sweet to watch them use their good manners. We also always write thank you cards after a birthday party. Call me old-fashioned but I like a hand written thank you note. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE OCCASIONS TO CELEBRATE?

I tend to keep things simple: easy food, music, candles and a stocked bar. It's always a fun party when my friends mix with my husband Dave's friends; his long time rock and roll buddies are a good time. IF YOU’RE ANYTHING LIKE US, A PARTY IS NOT A PARTY WITHOUT FOOD! I believe it's important to be polite. The babes are still so little but they are learning and it's sweet to watch them use their good manners My favourites are birthdays and Christmas. I love birthdays because I believe we should celebrate every year that we are on this earth and we should do it with those that we love. Christmas is family time, a season to reconnect, love and laugh—and eat! We throw a big open house party every year, it has evolved a lot over the past fifteen years - it's such a great night. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ENTERTAINING/HOSTING STYLE? Simple. Don't try too hard and remember: if you're having fun so will your guests. WHAT MAKES A CELEBRATION STAND OUT? I like it when people come over and feel

different delicious cheeses. Though, it is always mandatory that I purchase an entire wheel of Pierre Robert; I refer to that cheese as "my boyfriend." It's amazing—try it—I promise you will love it! But remember, he's my boyfriend.
THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTION, AND POINT TAKEN! DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR MAKING A BIG IMPACT WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK? I like to plan ahead—way ahead. I plan my kids' parties months beforehand; that way I can keep my eye open for party details that might go on sale and it's easier to search online for more unique items when you're not under a time crunch. Denise is my cake guru—I have learned more about baking from her than any course could ever teach me. WHAT A FANTASTIC FRIEND AND RESOURCE TO HAVE. CAN YOU SHARE YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR PLANNING PARTIES THAT INVOLVE CHILDREN? The best tip I have is to hire a photographer for your kid's birthday party. It's the best money you will spend and you don't need the photographer there all day, just for a couple of hours. Ask around and find someone who can work with your budget. I do it for every birthday party and it's the best. Being the hostess you never remember to take photos—this way you can relax. IT’S TRUE, YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS ANYTHING BEING STUCK BEHIND A LENS. WHAT INSPIRED THIS GIRLY, GARDEN-STYLE PARTY? I really wanted to have a sweet little party for Zoë and Poppy—Beckett was not interested—and two of their friends in the garden but it rained, so it quickly became an indoor garden party. Honestly, I just wanted to see the girls in flower crowns and they wanted a piece of cake… Sounds like a great excuse for a little party! OUR THOUGHTS EXACTLY, AND DESPITE THE RAIN IT WAS STILL GORGEOUS! TELL US, WITH THREE BUSY KIDS UNDER SIX YEARS OLD HOW DO YOU FIND TIME FOR YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND, DAVE? It's definitely a challenge! We try and go away together, just the two of us, once a year. It's nice to get away as a couple—we miss our kids like crazy, but we get to sleep in, read and hold hands. He's self-employed, so he can adjust his schedule if I have something big going on and when he's out of town I'm lucky that I can call my mom and she comes over to help out. When I was sick, Dave took unbelievable care of me and our children and carried the whole load for quite a while. As for balancing work and motherhood... I think it's impossible. Something always has to give and that's okay. I try to juggle all the balls but sometimes I drop one or two. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WAY TO SPEND TIME AS A FAMILY?

hangout, and anytime we can get to the beach, Science World, or the Vancouver Aquarium, it's a good day! LASTLY, THE FRAMEWORK GIRL BELIEVES IN CELEBRATING THE EVERYDAY—WHICH OF LIFE’S LITTLE MOMENTS BRING YOU THE MOST JOY? I really love when I walk through the door after work and get to hear Beckett, Zoë and Poppy squeal "mommy" with pure delight and love. Tucking them in every night and listening to their little voices tell me about their day is the absolute best. I live for that moment… and checking on them before I go to bed, looking at their sweet little faces, perfectly peaceful. My babies are my joy. fw

We are real homebodies, so we love hanging out in our garden or piling into our bed and reading. The neighbourhood park is also a favourite framework

BEST PATIO-HOPPING ATTIRE?

For outdoor events, I like to stick with a dressy wedge because it's easier to walk on uneven surfaces like grass, wooden decks and patios. I'd pair the DVF Architectural with a flowy, summer maxi dress or skirt. FAVOURITE PARTY SONG?

KRYSTAL BENNET | apinchoflovely

It's a tie: "Get Down On It" by Kool and The Gang and "No Parking on the Dancefloor" by Midnight Star. I have them both on my iPod. MOST MEMORABLE EVENT?

I'm hoping it will be the girls' dinner I'm currently planning! It's going to have an outdoor, nautical feel with dip dyed fabrics, navy stripes, hanging tree lights and pretty, hurricane vases. I haven't perfected the menu yet, but it will be something light and fresh for summer. A GREAT HOSTESS...

Puts her guests' experience before her own.

BEST PATIO-HOPPING ATTIRE?

A cute, white shift dress, a black denim jacket thrown over the shoulders and strappy, leather sandals. FAVOURITE PARTY SONG?

Anything by Prince, he is my ultimate! MOST MEMORABLE EVENT?

My 21st, an under-the-sea themed extravaganza with mermaids, sailors and sea creatures. According to the attendees, it was the party of the year. This might have something to do with patrons consuming a few two many of my "Sharday’s Lagoon" cocktails! A GREAT HOSTESS...

Is always observant of her guests’ needs and makes them as comfortable as possible. The small things go a long way e.g. hand-written place cards, thank-you notes etc.

BEST PATIO-HOPPING ATTIRE?

Since I'm a whopping 5'1, wedges are a must! Also, a summer dress with a cardigan; it always gets chilly when the sun goes down. FAVOURITE PARTY SONG?

It might be the fact that it was the first cassette I ever owned, but Kokomo by the Beach Boys is still one of my favourite party songs, especially in the summer!

MOST MEMORABLE EVENT?

It’s hard to name one event; all this talk about summer makes me reminisce about BBQs when I was younger… My parents grilling outside, watching my brother and I play hide-in-seek with the neighborhood kids. So many great memories. A GREAT HOSTESS...

Always makes sure her guests have plenty to eat! The best thing about going to parties is enjoying the delicious food.

BEST PATIO-HOPPING ATTIRE?

For day my go-to is a romper, comfortable wedge sandals (for all that walking!) and fun accessories; late afternoon to evening I would wear my favourite maxi dress accessorized with a head band, statement necklace and cocktail ring, and my jean jacket for when it cools down. FAVOURITE PARTY SONG?

I am addicted to the new Daft Punk and Pharrell song, "Get Lucky." Lately, that song is on repeat every time I get ready!

MOST MEMORABLE EVENT?

Attending the Room to meet Roland Mouret. It was a night of inspiration surrounded by fashion lovers, writers, designers, stylists and, of course, Roland Mouret! A GREAT HOSTESS...

Makes time to visit every guest with a smile on her face and creates a fun atmosphere with great music to dance to!
