by Sara Constantineau

Whether you love the family you were born with or the one you created yourself, there’s no escaping them during the holiday season. These three very different stories all reflect on that seemingly widespread truth about families from all walks of life—you can’t live with them, or without them.

THE STORY

Despite their immense differences, four women representing three generations are bound together by their family summer home in Maine. Alice Kelleher, the widowed matriarch; Kathleen, her formerly alcoholic daughter; Anne Marie, Kathleen’s peoplepleasing sister-in-law, and Maggie, Kathleen’s newly pregnant and single daughter. Despite the arguments, tears and spiteful words, they find they are stronger together than they are apart.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

Each deeply flawed character is familiar in some way, whether you see yourself or your own family in each of them. Even though the Kellehers are 100 percent Irish-Catholic-Americans, their struggle with family secrets, sibling rivalry, and motherly guilt is universal to anyone with parents, siblings, or children of their own.
