Foundation of Light

THE FOUNDATION OF LIGHT IS MUCH MORE THAN A FOOTBALL CHARITY. SPORT INSPIRES AND MOTIVATES MANY PEOPLE TO MAKES CHANGES BUT TO ONLY CONSIDER SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS, MISSES THE GREATER AND LONG-LASTING IMPACTS IT MAKES EVERY DAY. READ ON TO SEE EXACTLY HOW WE ARE USING SPORT TO CHANGE LIVES.

WE ARE

FOUNDATION OF LIGHT LIGHTING THE WAY FOR OTHERS... Welcome to our annual yearbook and a new era for Foundation of Light. This year we completed our ambitious move into the landmark Beacon of Light, our new £20m home and a centre of opportunity for the whole region. The Beacon holds a special place in my heart as a gift from the Foundation to every man, woman and child in Sunderland and beyond. As a football-inspired charity, it sets us apart from all others, fusing together

the best of what football and sport can encourage, motivate and achieve. The Beacon provides us with a unique place to welcome all generations and a setting to perfectly complement partner strategies to continue to revitalise, rejuvenate and strengthen our region. As part of the campaign to build the Beacon we were very lucky to be welcomed into Buckingham Palace by HRH the Countess of Wessex GCVO, who has been an enthusiastic champion of our work for more than 15 years. As a key supporter of the Foundation, I feel

that the Beacon would not have been built without her support and I cannot thank her enough for her commitment to our cause. Our relationship with our parent football club has also been revived and reinvigorated with Sunderland AFC owner Stewart Donald joining our board of Trustees, and work behind the scenes is underway to further embed the Foundation in SAFC’s broader community engagement strategy that will pay dividends for even more people in this region.

I hope you will explore the Beacon for yourself and agree there is nowhere else quite like it. I’m especially proud it’s a first for the North East as well as the UK and I am certain it will inspire many more people to try something new, learn more or do more and change thousands of lives for the better.

TALENT SPOTTERS MIA | SHINING LIGHT Dance helped Mia find her voice. Mia is a very shy young girl with downs syndrome and learning difficulties who is non-verbal most of the time. Since she started attending our disability dance after-school club she has transformed into being far more confident, and enthusiastic about dance and play. She has learned five full dance routines off by heart (including one

using props) and loves to show off her moves. Dance lessons with our specialist coaches increased Mia’s confidence enough for us to spot her incredible talent but more importantly give her a vehicle through which she can express herself and have fun. Sometimes all it takes is a different activity or a different approach to help people shine.

CAMERON | A RISING STAR Cameron converted a love of football into a University place. Part of the first ever group to complete the two-year football scholarship with us, Cameron was a role model student establishing himself as captain of the squad and achieving remarkable results on and off the pitch. In the programme, youngsters access high-level football coaching and compete in a national league whilst undertaking qualifications. Cameron’s footballing prowess was considerable,

but it was his academic drive that stood out and he achieved a triple distinction which he used to gain a place at Durham University studying Sports Science. We are here to ensure that everybody has a chance of an education, using people’s passion for football, and now the outstanding facilities at the Beacon of Light, to engage them in all types of learning enhancing what our local schools already deliver and bringing new knowledge and skills to adults and families.

TEAM PLAYERS NATHANIEL | SUPPORTED Our team extends way beyond our employees, helping players like Nathaniel and coaches like Jack, become the best they can be. Nathaniel started in our Little Dribblers programme when he was just 18 months old just as coach Jack was completing his traineeship. Jack writes: “He is the most wellbehaved child and his brain is like a sponge. Ever since I have been working with him, he has always been polite and a pleasure to teach and has really helped me develop into the professional coach I have become.

“I always remember his mam reassuring me after I did a session that didn’t go to well when I was only 16 and telling me to keep at it. Now I am coaching Nathaniel as a full-time member of staff on our Promising Little Dribblers programme.” We are lucky enough to be supported by a fantastic team that includes: Sunderland AFC players, directors and fans; parents; local businesses; other community organisations and so many more.

GAME CHANGERS KARIN | AN INSPIRATION Inspiring grandmother Karin puts family first. Karin, and her family have been through real adversity but, refusing to be beaten, she wanted to demonstrate that whatever happens they are still there for each other. Karin’s daughter suffered two house fires in quick succession, the second just before Christmas 2017, meaning they lost all their presents and most of their personal possessions just after they had got their lives going again. Grandson Deacon and his mother moved in with Karin in her two-bedroom house, not wanting to

live vulnerably on their own. Karin has given up her bedroom for her daughter and now sleeps downstairs. Wanting to show Deacon that they could still have fun together, and bond, she signed up for Family Learning. Despite struggling a lot with reading and writing, finding formal learning a challenge, she has attended both maths and English courses and her skills have markedly improved. What’s more she’s ‘changed the game’ from her family struggling to her family strengthening. We’re committed to giving all families the chance to strengthen those bonds so that they can flourish.

LEADERS ERIN | LEADING THE WAY Erin led the way in her community. Erin joined the Kicks programme in Consett when it was mainly an informal football session for boys. She took a proactive role in getting more teenage girls to attend, introducing new activities focussed on making the sessions more inclusive. This kickstarted a change that sees the session attendance now 70% female. One of the sessions she helped set up was a homework club for teens attending Kicks and younger children

attending the Mini Kickers session, giving the youngsters an opportunity to help each other with school work in a relaxed and sociable environment. Erin also progressed to head of the local youth forum. In the communities we work in, and the outreach centres especially, we aim to empower people to enable the change that they would like to see and steer our work to suit them. Erin is just one of many leaders across Sunderland, South Tyneside and County Durham we are lucky to empower.

MOTIVATORS RICHARD | ON THE UP! Only a few years ago Richard struggled to leave his home. Now he’s at the front of ours. For many years 26-year-old Richard suffered with severe anxiety, only leaving the house to go to the Job Centre and feeling unable to gain help. During one trip he met our Back in the Game employability team who told him how

they could help him build his confidence and motivation. From there it’s been a long and steady journey for Richard: completing the course; gaining qualifications; volunteering to support others in a similar situation; and he is now employed as a sports assistant at the Beacon of Light.

BUSINESS LEADERS

LESLEY | OUTSTANDING As Sir Bob mentioned in his introduction, we are now at the beginning of a new era with the Beacon of Light being as much of a responsibility as an opportunity. Key to our success will be the smooth running of the facility and making sure that people are using the Beacon for what it was intended. Progress has already been made in this regard (pages 20-21) but we will forge on to ensure we

24

are delivering what our communities want and need. We must also ensure that the Beacon’s potential is met allowing us to reinvest, through the Foundation, into our community and broaden our impact. Whilst the Beacon of Light is now our home, we remain at the heart of our communities across the North East through our outreach centres, acting as each neighbourhood’s ‘tailor-made Foundations’.

Our employability-themed portfolio of programmes is set for an overhaul, embedding industry-specific qualifications and real-life working environments into learning, increasing the chances of our learners gaining longterm employment. Through the Beacon of Light’s World of Work Zone we will be able to deliver training and qualifications in fields including catering, engineering, construction and more.

We will expand the range of education courses on offer, including microsessions for parents bringing their children to the Beacon of Light, and we will ensure that health (physical and mental) continues to be embedded in everything that we do. Finally, we will assert ourselves once again as an industry leader, setting a shining example for others.

LESLEY OUR CEO RECEIVED THE OUTSTANDING IMPACT AWARD We will inspire our participants and partners in achieving and being more.
