the measure of success

how do i measure success? The last 12 months has been one of the most successful and transformational years in the Foundation’s history; with the Royal Opening of our brand-new home and community hub, the Beacon of Light, to being named as the Best Community Football Foundation outside of the Premier League. I am in awe and incredibly proud of the success our staff, volunteers and participants have achieved. We continue to receive regional, national and international recognition and accolades for our lifechanging work across the Sunderland, South Tyneside and Durham communities; with a growing reputation for pushing boundaries, thinking differently and creating trailblazing programmes. From humble beginnings 18 years ago to now over 100 full-time staff and a magnificent new home in the Beacon, it is an honour to be at the helm of this fantastic and inspirational charity.

to take part in sport with a sibling - our work really does transform lives. But sadly, we need to do more. We are living in challenging and ever-changing times. Anti-social behaviour is on the rise; austerity measures are impacting the poorest, most isolated and overlooked members of our communities; and for the North East in particular, the biggest threat remains economic uncertainty resulting in thousands worrying about job security and future prospects. Now more than ever, the Foundation of Light matters. It matters to the whole community. It matters to the people of Sunderland, South Tyneside and Durham. But we can’t do this alone and we need the support of our sponsors and partners, existing and new, to continue our work and help those who need us the most. Play your part in our story. Celebrate our success, and please continue your support of our life-changing work. Because together, we are making a difference.

Despite our success we will never lose sight of why we are here and the difference we make every day by inspiring and supporting thousands of people across the region. From increasing a shy teenager’s confidence; to helping a family going through difficult times; or by simply giving a young disabled person the opportunity

When we opened our first outreach centre in 2008 the benefits were quickly apparent. It became much easier for us to integrate into a community, to be trusted by those who are typically ‘hard to reach’ and reluctant to seek help. It was far easier to support local schools and communities from within, becoming part of the fabric of the community and helping to shape each region’s

we measure success by...

>>

We think success is personal. Different people measure it in different ways and it’s different for everyone. People come to us from all backgrounds and all walks of life with different goals and motivations. However, this is our favourite measure of success.

A smiling face - the result of an obstacle overcome, a challenge defeated, potential realised and achievements made.

success is... discovering your passion Four years ago Emily had hardly kicked a football, now she’s inspiring others. “I first got involved with the Foundation of Light four years ago when they put on a girls’ session at St. Bede’s school. Pretty new to football, I wasn’t sure what to expect but I absolutely loved it – I don’t think I’ve missed many training sessions, put it that way! “I progressed to playing in a local grassroots team and then was invited to attend the Foundation’s Player Development Centre. As well as improving my playing skills, the Foundation helped me access a refereeing programme and I now referee on a weekly basis too, which I enjoy. “I haven’t left the St. Bede’s sessions yet, I still like to train there and show the younger players what they can achieve when they find their passion.”

16

We’ve improved participation in sport for 14,480 people.

17

success is... finding your voice in the team Michael had no problems with his homework but needed help with his teamwork. Through our programmes we aim to help absolutely everyone. There’s a real challenge in our region with poor educational attainment rife but that isn’t the case for this youngster. When we met Michael we could tell that academically he was very talented, but low confidence meant that his excellence was limited to his homework and exams. The Enterprise Programme the Foundation deliver in his school focusses on teamwork

18

and encourages pupils to work collaboratively, something which is often as sought after by employers than academic excellence. Whilst it wasn’t within his comfort zone, he really applied himself to the Enterprise Programme playing an active role within the team and he even taking a lead in the end of programme presentation. No matter what someone’s existing skills and achievements, success for many can mean being able to do something they never could before. It’s incredibly rewarding to see a youngster so capable take something positive from our work and succeed at it.

we’ve helped to raise the confidence of 17,185 people.

success is... getting my life back A car accident drastically changed the course of James’ life but he’s fighting to get it back. “I graduated from Loughborough University in 2015 and started working as a Quantity Surveyor shortly after.

Five months later I completed my first football coaching qualification and in March 2019, three and a half years after my accident, I joined the Foundation team as an employee and I’m now working towards my Level 2 coaching qualification. With a lot of hard work, and the support of the staff at the Foundation, I’m getting my life back.”

On 17th November 2015 a tree fell onto my car and I sustained injuries that could have killed me. I was put into a medically induced coma for over a month and spent almost a year in hospitals receiving treatment and rehabilitation before being released home. The accident left me with a brain injury that meant I could no longer work in my chosen field. Through my love of sports, I found the Foundation of Light and, with the right type of support in place, I was able to start volunteering in June 2018.

20

We’ve supported 2,338 disabled people to be more active.

21

success is... having somewhere you belong “My 25 year old son Jamie has Autism which affects his ability to interact and make friends. He also has physical disabilities and struggles with his mobility. I’m essentially his full-time carer as well as his father. Recently moving to a new area left us feeling more isolated than ever so I went looking for groups to get involved in. On social media I found Foundation of Light ‘Football in the Parks’ programme which has been fantastic for both of us.

22

It’s somewhere where we’ve both been able to get active, have fun and meet other people. The sport and physical exercise part is good but the social side is fantastic. Everyone is so supportive and Jamie has been accepted by group and is making friendships of his own. Jamie now interacts better and it helped me mentally as after my partner died I was struggling to cope. Mixing with people again has helped me greatly and we’re now trying to fit extra sessions in.”

We’ve improved access and participation in healthy living activities for 13,202 people.

23

success is... seeing my family happy The Mills family discovered a recipe for success with the Foundation. Mum Julie explains; “As a mother of three I always want my children to eat healthily but I don’t always have the time to cook or buy healthy ingredients. “My son Danyl lives with a life-limiting illness and disabilities which make many physical tasks difficult. Despite showing an interest in activities, he often struggles to get involved himself. His serious medical conditions also require a lot of support and appointments, so sometimes it’s hard to get quality time together. “I didn’t think cooking regular meals was an option for us and at one point we were eating four takeaways a week. Something had to change. “So Danyl and I signed up to one of the Foundation’s Family Learning Programmes because I wanted to improve my cooking, pick up a couple

24

of tips about healthy eating which is fast and, on a budget, and spend some quality time with Danyl. But I got so much more from the course. “The Foundation staff were so supportive and encouraging and we just loved it. By the end of the programme Danyl was able to chop ingredients and be really involved in the sessions. I’m a lot more confident in myself and enjoy spending time in the kitchen now, especially after realising eating healthier meals and cooking from scratch doesn’t have to be expensive or take all night. We have even managed to cut our takeaways down to once a week! But most importantly I feel much closer to my son and that is priceless.”

We’ve improved awareness and knowledge of healthy choices for 16,822 people.

support to over 2,000 participants with a disability, thousands of girls and women, and over 500 families.

The opening of the Beacon of Light was a high point of my time as CEO; a new home to the Foundation and a stunning, physical representation of our work, and our role, within the community.

It has been a steep learning curve and at times a challenging journey. But we have been lucky to receive support and guidance from a number of stakeholders and partners, who have helped us shape our new future through a renewed and revitalised business plan.

In it’s first year of operation, we’ve welcomed an average of 6,000 visitors a week through our doors and supported an additional 20,000 children, young people and families in sport, education or employability through our programmes. This year, we have gone through a period of significant change as we moved from being an established charity to also being guardians of a commercial facility, ensuring that our structure and governance is reflective of the needs of both the Foundation and the Beacon. We have continued to develop outreach in schools, community centres and playing fields in some of the most deprived communities of Sunderland, South Tyneside and County Durham, whilst also expanding our staff skills in areas including youthwork, primary teaching, hospitality, and ICT. Through a workforce of over 130, with nearly 100 volunteers we have impacted the lives of thousands of people including providing

Central to that plan is a strong emphasis on telling our story in a new and engaging way, and developing our stakeholder engagement. A new marketing strategy will help us fulfil these objectives as well as support us to grow and bring our business plan to life. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for your support. Whether you have been with us from the beginning, have only recently joined us or if this is your first interaction with us - thank you for being part of our story
