THE LIFE CHANGING FOUNDATION FOUNDATION OF LIGHT WAS SET UP IN 2001 WITH THE PURPOSE OF CHANGING LOCAL LIVES THROUGH THE POWER OF FOOTBALL. NOW, MORE THAN 15 YEARS LATER, WE HAVE GROWN TO BECOME ONE OF THE MOST PIONEERING ORGANISATIONS WITHIN OUR FIELD WINNING MULTIPLE AWARDS FOR OUR GROUNDBREAKING WORK.
football has in the North East to engage people in a way which other organisations simply cannot. Working in some of the country’s most deprived wards, we make a difference with those that others might label as ‘hard to reach’.

youngsters are getting the best chances at succeeding in the future. We are sponsors of the Beacon of Light School which helps secondary school-aged youngsters under-engaged in education and on the verge of exclusion, trying to ensure they continue to learn and giving them access to an alternative curriculum which works for them. School-leavers who have lost direction or struggle with taking next steps into further
education or employment receive support through our programmes which offer tailored support in the form of a mix of skills and confidence development, nationally recognised qualifications and personal guidance. Finally, we give adults the chance to get back into education and get their skills back on track through informal and friendly adult education sessions.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING HEALTH IS AT THE HEART OF EVERYTHING THAT WE DO – EVERY PROGRAMME THAT WE RUN WILL HELP PEOPLE LIVE HEALTHIER AND HAPPIER LIVES. HOWEVER, THERE ARE SOME AREAS WHERE IT IS THE KEY FOCUS. Through our award-winning partnership with the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation we are able to teach families how to cook healthy and nutritious meals on a budget.

Sessions engage parents and their children together, helping families bond but also increasing the chance of the recipes and methods being taken home.

SPORT AND PLAY WE BELIEVE THAT EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY REGARDLESS OF THEIR ABILITY, LEVEL OR SPORT. Offering a range of sports that far exceed football (we have been recognised for outstanding services to Netball for example), we have forged partnerships with others within our field to offer opportunities for people of all ages regardless of their discipline.

Through our links with Sunderland AFC’s Academy of Light and our Sunderland Regional Talent Club (Formerly Girls’ Centre of Excellence) we’re able to offer direct pathways into elite sport, and our links with local FA (and other sports’ national governing bodies) offer routes for those who wish to become officials too.

WORLD OF WORK FOR US, WORLD OF WORK MEANS CONNECTING THE GAP BETWEEN SCHOOL OR UNEMPLOYMENT WITH WORK AND EMPLOYMENT. We give Primary and Secondary School pupils the chance to work on projects that develop entrepreneurship and team-building skills, as well as giving them a platform to present in public and compete in the Premier League’s national Enterprise Challenge competition.

Our Coaches’ Academy and Football Scholarship offer ideal first steps for school leavers wanting a career coaching or playing sport. Both backed up by nationally-recognised qualifications and featuring ‘live working environments’, they operate as an ideal bridge between school and further education or employment.

It is important to know that in cases where we have reason to be concerned that someone may be subject to any form of abuse or neglect, the Foundation of Light will have no alternative but to follow the appropriate Safeguarding Board procedures and inform relevant parties of our concern.
There are three different levels of criminal record check completed by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS): Standard, Enhanced and Enhanced with Barred List Checks. The level of check that we are allowed to conduct will depend on the role of the member of staff. The Foundation of Light ensures that all staff are DBS checked at the highest level permissible for their role.
