Writers • Photographers • Contributors Hello Writers, Photographers & Contributors! I want to thank you for sending stories and photographs over the years. The resilience of our magazine has been great since 2007. I have been asked will we print the magazine in the future, although we have done over 70 issues in hard-copy it now will only be online. At the moment there are no immediate plans of printing any future issues due to costs. Now as we turn a new page team, new challenges as we face them together. As with any venture, are goal is to constantly improve on our online monthly magazine of Foothills Times Photos. They say a picture says a thousand words, that being said there will be less articles and more photographs from YOU. Photographers & Photo Contributors: All your work you allow us to use will be credited to you. Whether it is animals, barns, flowers, mountains, rivers, cars, wedding photos, anniversary shots, vintage photos, vacations etc. As a photo contributor, you are agreeing to allowing me to take photos or videos from your Facebook page and put them in the magazine. Again, if your photo is blurry when you send it we wont be able to use it. You may of course send me photos directly to my email. Descriptions of photos are always great when you provide them. Please send me an email not a text of your photos for clarity to: foothillspublisher@gmail.com. photo by David Eriksen Lilies or its scientific name Lilium, are known for their large, flamboyant and dazzling flowers with a strong and intoxicating but sweet scent. They come in striking shapes and colors that are contrasting and attractive. Lilies are easy to grow and care for and add a wonderful appeal to your garden. Lilies can make an ideal cut flower too, which makes it more popular to date.

The Animal Park at the Conservators Center’s mission is educating people, caring for animals, and advocating for species. Predator management is one of the most difficult conservation challenges facing humanity; we have to decide what kind of world we want to leave for future generations. Humanity must choose to live in a world that has lions, tigers, wolves, and other large carnivores and to make the sacrifices to ensure that world exists. We believe you are more likely to become invested in these species after meeting them and learning about their inherent value. By introducing visitors to rare, threatened, and endangered species, the Park’s animal residents serve as ambassadors for their wild counterparts. Throughout our 23 year history, the Animal Park at the Conservators Center has supported wildlife education and conservation. Our dedication to public wildlife education extends from on-site tours to the multiple educational and institutional partnerships the Park maintains, its participation in statewide educational programming, its advocacy of responsible and deliberate exotic animal husbandry at the state and federal levels of government, and its international support of wildlife facilities across the globe. When controversy arises, it is part of the mission of the Animal Park to advocate to and educate the public by providing detailed information in order that people are able to make up their own minds on a given issue. We will always pledge to provide the most accurate and thorough information to the public as possible.

The Animal Park is located in beautiful Caswell County, North Carolina, just north of Mebane. Finding directions to the Park is easy, just type “Animal Park at the Conservators Center, Burlington, NC” into Google Maps or any up-todate GPS navigation device. You can also use our street address to find directions. Please keep in mind that some cellular services will lose connectivity in the rural areas. We recommend you print out or write down the directions and our phone number in case you get lost.

Barns

Barns have been used in North Carolina to protect farm animals and store crops and farm equipment since the early days of European settlement. The design of a barn was strongly related to the immigrant ethnic group who built it. In the 1600s the English constructed their primitive dwellings without using floor plans and using only unfamiliar local materials.

by Laura Harris

Photo by Pam Crigger in Sandy Ridge, NC 36

Why were barns painted RED? Hundreds of years ago, many farmers would seal their barns with linseed oil, which is an orangecolored oil derived from the seeds of the flax plant. To this oil, they would add a variety of things, most often milk and lime, but also ferrous oxide, or rust. Rust was plentiful on farms and because it killed fungi and mosses that might grow on barns, it was very effective as a sealant. It turned the mixture red in color.

In 1922 the Sears, Roebuck catalogue offered red barn paint for just $1.43 per gallon.

According to the 1884 edition of Everybody’s Paint Book, by F.B. Gardner, Venetian red was “suitable for any common work, or for brickwork and outbuildings.” This red pigment penetrated well into wooden barn boards and resisted fading when exposed to sunlight, so it could age gracefully for generations. But red paint remained popular on many farms because it was the most affordable. In 1922 the Sears, Roebuck catalogue offered red barn paint for just $1.43 per gallon, while other colors of house paints sold for at least $2.25 per gallon – nearly twice as much.
