City Carnival queen selection

Double the Carnival, jumbo portion of fun T

he capital city Carnival queen was selected at a pageantstyle gala event this week. Estefania Mora will also serve as the Tourism ambassador of Panama. And after the Carnival from February 18 to 21, she will begin traveling with the Panama Tourism Authority (ATP) to international fairs. During the question section of the contest, Estefania couldn’t quite remember the country’s slogan - “Where the world meets” - she answered “Viva Panama!” instead. Surely she’ll remember the right answer from now on. She will have plenty of time to practice it during the four days of the government-sponsored Carnival along the Cinta Costera that this

year will bear the name “Jumbo Rumba.” Double the Carnival Panama City will actually have two queens by Saturday, January 28 when the private sector will elect its Carnival Queen at the Paxion Discotheque in the Zona De La Rumba at Amador. This second “private sector” Carnaval is open to all. It will be held along the street in front of the Albrook Airport. The slogan of this Carnival celebration is “Carnaval Contigo” and organizers are promoting the fact that a Panamanian beauty who has been Carnival Queen in New York will come to town to promote the private festivities.

Casi a final de la noche, en el momento en que las candidatas responden a una batería de preguntas al azar, Estefanía no podía recordar el eslogan del país – “Where the World Meets” – y respondió ¡Viva Panamá!. Seguro que a partir de ahora recordará la respuesta correcta. Estefanía tendrá tiempo de sobra para practicar durante los cuatro días del carnaval patrocinado por el gobierno a lo largo de la Cinta Costera que este año se llama “Jumbo Rumba”. or the tenth consecutive year, the Panama Canal Administration (ACP) will roll out a firstrate cultural program called “Verano Cultural” (Cultural Summer) so that Panama’s citizens can enjoy music and musical theatre outdoors during the dry season. The performances, including two concerts by Panamanian salsa

star and former Tourism Minister Ruben Blades, will be held throughout the country until Sunday, February 5. The Ruben Blades concerts, just as all the ACP Verano Cultural presentations, are free to the public. The first one will be held on Friday, February 3 at 7:00 p.m. on the steps of the Canal Admin-

istration Building. The second is in Chitré on Sunday, February 5 at 4:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the Rico Cedeño Baseball Stadium. ACP Administrator Alberto Alemán Zubieta, says that the Verano Cultural program connects Panamanians to their Canal.

For advanced investors, the use of a combination of a foundation holding shares of a corporation is the best structure to accomplish bullet proof offshore asset protection. Be sure to use a licensed law firm. Lawyers provide attorney-client privilege which mere offshore consultants do not. Banking When choosing an offshore bank, be sure to identify one that offers the right combination of investment products or services for your investment needs. Many offshore banks only offer US Dollar

savings accounts, checking accounts, time deposits and loans with limited online banking capabilities. Many do not offer corporate debit cards or international check clearing. Check ahead if you may need multi-currency banking or online wire transfers. Ask ahead what the wire fees are to receive or send wire transfers too as they can be expensive at some banks. Also, expect the account opening process to take between one to four weeks as bank compliance departments conduct background checks on the signatory and beneficiary of the account. On brokerage accounts When choosing an offshore brokerage firm, be sure to use one that offers trading on the markets one plans to trade. Many brokerage firms offer trading only on major markets like the NYSE, with no access to bulletin board stocks, futures trading, forex trading or other over the counter trades. Also, be sure to ask what the trade fees and commissions are. Offshore brokerage firms generally charge slightly higher trade fees than discount brokers

in the U.S. or Canada. For merchant accounts holders When choosing an offshore merchant account for your offshore business, be sure to ask about the setup fees, monthly fees, processing fees, discount rate, rolling reserve rate, and per transaction fees. Offshore merchant processors generally charge slightly higher rates and fees than those in the U.S. or Canada. The account opening process can be quite time consuming so expect to provide a lot of documentation and be patient while the due diligence process takes place. Gold and silver accounts Gold and silver have resurfaced as the principal asset class for those seeking a hedge for inflation or risk of an all out collapse of fiat currencies that today are backed by nothing but the faith in the governments that print the money. Improv8 is back! English-language improv troupe returns for the 2012 season, seeking new talent P anama’s now-famous English speaking improvisation troupe, Improv8, is returning for its 4th season. After a year-long break from the stage, Improv8 has announced that it will soon be treading the historical boards of the charming Theatre Guild of Ancon once again, and promises to bring “a bag full of new tricks and frills.” Improv8 is an eight-person improvisation troupe, which was born at the Guild in 2008. Each year they have created a 2-hour show full of spontaneous scenes, comical games and challenging tasks, offering plenty of laughter and entertainment for six nights of performances. Those familiar with the show have memories of excitedly scribbling down ‘scene suggestions’ for the second half of the show, all in hope that theirs will be picked for the performance and will win a prize. Improv8 organizers cite “the wonderful strength of the Theatre Guild team and the talented cast of improvisers” for its success, but most importantly the continued loyalty of its’ audiences. he expansion work on Tocumen International Airport is complete. The result of a $100 million dollar investment, the airport will now be able to increase its annual passenger load from six to nine million. The Northern Concourse should be up and running in about 60 days. It will have 12 boarding gates and 20 commercial spaces along the 700 meter length. All together there are 21,000 square meters of no construction in this new area. At a ceremony last week, President Ricardo Martinelli pointed out that the new terminal, built by the consortium Aerotocumen (Grupo Odinsa from Colombia and Conconcreto Internacional of Panama), will be able to attend “wide bodied” aircraft. Among planes of this classification are the Airbus 380, the largest commercial airplane in the world, and

the Boeing 747. Airport expansion throughout the country Martinelli took advantage of the occasion to point out airport developments in the rest of the country. The expansion of the Bocas del Toro runway is next, with an extension plan reaching between 1,500 and 2,000 feet. It will be necessary to fill in the sea bed

on Isla Colón in Bocas in order to extend the runway there. Howard Airport, located in Panama Pacifico, currently receives Canadian charter flights. Also, when the next expansion of the airport is complete in 2104 (the Southern Concourse), Panama will become Latin America’s most internationally-connected airport.

Expansión aeroportuaria en todo el país Martinelli aprovechó la ocasión para vislumbrar los planes de futuro del gobierno para la oferta aeroportuária, con las miras puestas en una ampliación del Aeropuerto de Bocas de Toro de entre 1,500 y 2,000 pies, en este caso “sobre el mar”, además de resaltar que el Aeropuerto Howard ya recibe pasajeros canadienses en vuelos chárter, y que cuando la siguiente ampliación de Tocumen prevista para 2014 (Muelle Sur) esté finiquitada, Panamá se convertirá en “el aeropuerto con más conexiones internacionales de Latinoamérica”.

Panama counts down for the Ironman 70.3, major event for athletes of super-human capability

n Sunday February 12, the top triathletes of the world will compete by land and sea in Panama City. Of the estimated 750 participants, 45 are pro triathletes. Among the athletes to keep an eye on are Englishwoman Leanda Cave and American Chris Lieto. For Panama, Fernando Alfaro is touted as one of the pro participants who could make his country proud in the event. Panama is the first among 55 stops of the Ironman 70.3 circuit for 2012. It is also the first destination promoting the Latin American Pro Ironman championship. The distances are 1.9 km of swimming, 90 km by bicycle and 21 km of the race is on foot. The triathletes will begin with the swimming leg from the Balboa Dock at Amador (La Playita). Continued on page 36.

On Wednesday January 18, Coronado Golf Club and Resort hosted the 5th annual US vs Canada Golf tournament. This year marked the most popular event ever with 84 golfers making up 14 Canadian teams and seven US teams. The winning team this year was a US team that shot a net score of 54. Teams were made up of men and women from Coronado and the surrounding com-

munity. The day finished off with a great lunch and some awesome prizes at the Coronado Terrazas Restaurant. Donna Anderson and her team of volunteers organize the event every year with amazing attention to detail, and this year was no exception. Golf pros, enthusiasts and amateurs at best had a fabulous day out on the course adorning their patriotic colours and flags. Next year's event will be held again in the 3rd week of January.

his weekend sees the Feria del Bebe (Baby Fair expo) at ATLAPA Convention Center. Organised by Expoeventos, over 14,000 people are expected to attend. It is this kind of popularity for events such as these that demonstrates how important family, and children are in Panamanian culture. Whilst family and child photography has been available in Panama for many years, one photographer is bringing a breath of fresh air to traditional portraits. Jennifer Moloney’s photography takes a more natural, contemporary approach to capturing images of children. Every child is unique, and it is this individual personal-

ity and spirit that Jennifer aims to reveal. Jennifer is a Panama Citybased photographer. Her first degree was in Midwifery, and it was this career that gave her an interest in families and children, and developed her understanding of the unique relationships that exist in every family. After several years working in London undertaking corporate, family and wedding commissions, she decided to make the move to Panama. As her primary interest is babies, children and families it is these subject areas that she has focused on since her arrival in Panama. Children are at their best when

they are relaxed and having fun and that is why Jennifer comes to clients' homes or to a location of their choice for the photo session. This way everyone will feel at ease and this will reflect in the images. She provides a personal, professional service and works with her clients to achieve unique, memorable images. personas. Esa gran espectación que traen consigo estos eventos demuestra cuán importante son las familias y los niños en la cultura panameña. Mientras que la fotografía familiar y de la niñez han estado disponible en Panamá por muchos años, una fotógrafa trae un soplo de aire fresco a la tradicional fotografía familiar en Panamá. La fotógrafa de Jennifer Moloney se acerca de manera contemporánea y natural a su objetivo, en este caso los niños y sus familias, para capturar imágenes únicas. Cada niño es único, y es el espíritu de esta personalidad individual lo que Jennifer se propone revelar con su fotografía. Jennifer es una fotógrafa instalada en Ciudad de Panamá. Su primera carrera fue en partería, y fue esa carrera lo que la llevó a interesarse en las familias y sus niños, así como desarrolló su comprensión de las relaciones únicas que existen en cada familia.

Tras algunos años trabajando a comisión en Londres en empresas corporativas, familiares y bodas, decidió mudarse a Panamá. Casco Antiguo Spanish School está invitando a sus amigos y vecinos a un comienzo por todo lo alto que salpique a los medios de comunicación. The new Panamanian convention center will be built on four parcels of land on the Amador Causeway at a total cost of $156.6 million. anama’s tourism offer is truly taking off. A bright and shining new addition is the double-decker, London-style “City Sightseeing Panamá” hop-on, hop-off bus. Those who jump aboard can see the city sights accompanied by information delivered through a high tech system.
