On the cover: Dan and Becca Hardy, first-time parents, were not expecting their daughter Nezuko to arrive six weeks early. She was born on August 28, 2023, weighing only 4 pounds and 5 ounces. During the 34 days that Nezuko stayed at Dominican's NICU, Dan and Becca were able to stay close by boarding at the Birth Center. The happy family is doing well and they are grateful for the care that each of the staff members provided. Published by: Stephanie Lutz Publishing, LLC Proofreader: Josie Cowden

Wellness On Wheels Campaign Preventive health care to those who need it most. Dominican Hospital Foundation’s funding initiative, Wellness on Wheels, is a $2.145 million campaign to enhance health care access provided by our Mobile Wellness Clinic and significantly impact the availability of vital medical care in Santa Cruz County. Dominican Hospital’s existing Mobile Wellness Clinic is a 38-foot mobile medical van that helps address community needs by providing patients with episodic health and preventive services at no cost. Services are provided by a multidisciplinary team of nurse practitioners, allied health professionals, and clinic coordinators.

Why it is Important Within our community many individuals face barriers to health care the Mobile Wellness Clinic is a vital resource for prevention. Barriers to health care include primary location and proximity to hospital or clinics, transportation, insurance and ability to pay, housing and food insecurity, language, and education. The Dominican Hospital Foundation seeks funds to acquire a new, functionally appropriate Mobile Wellness Clinic. In addition to the Mobile Wellness Clinic as a free service, funds may also be used to cover patient’s medical expenses beyond their initial screening or site-visit. The expansion plans include the acquisition of a new mobile medical vehicle to enhance efficiencies and patient offerings; increase availability to the working population by expanding service hours to varying times and locations across Santa Cruz County; enhance episodic and preventive

n the heart of Santa Cruz, an extraordinary tale of compassion and medical expertise has taken place at Dominican Hospital, featuring Dr. Nicholas Abidi, orthopedic surgeon, and Dr. Steven Plumb, anesthesiologist. These caring physicians came forward to donate their services to a patient struggling in Ukraine. Combined with the generosity of Dominican, a young man’s life was transformed, serving as a beacon of hope and healing.

1 4 | FOCUS ON WELLNESS

At the center of this inspiring story is Ruslan, a young man living in Ukraine who faced life’s adversities with remarkable courage. He bore the weight of cerebral palsy and the disfigurement it had inflicted upon him, enduring immense physical and emotional trials. But destiny and Dominican had other plans for him. Ruslan’s journey to healing was made possible by the benevolence of a nonprofit organization committed to the

welfare of children like him. They rescued Ruslan from life within the walls of a mental institution in Ukraine and found him a new home. As he grew older, the caring organization orchestrated Ruslan’s transformative journey to a better life by bringing him overseas to Dominican for a life-changing surgery. Ruslan’s caretakers had initially connected with Dr. Plumb’s sister, a nurse working in Oregon. She approached her brother, Dr. Plumb, in Santa Cruz, who accepted the challenge of bringing Ruslan to Santa Cruz for surgery. Enhancing the commitment of Dr. Plumb and Dr. Abidi was Dominican, which agreed to donate surgery time, essential equipment, skilled staff, and the dedication of the entire medical team to Ruslan’s operation. Dominican Hospital’s collective efforts made the surgery for Ruslan a reality, demonstrating the power of teamwork, selflessness, and humankindness. Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Abidi brought precision and expertise in performing the intricate procedure, while anesthesiologist Dr. Plumb ensured Ruslan’s safety and comfort throughout the surgery. Their dedication

exemplified the true spirit of teamwork that defines all patient care at Dominican. Joyous news echoed through the hospital halls when Ruslan’s surgery was proclaimed an undeniable success. The young man from Ukraine was now on a promising path to regain his mobility and independence. What once seemed like an impossible challenge became a story of triumphant resilience and the boundless potential of caring and collaboration. Dr. Plumb’s compassion extended beyond the operating room. He invited Ruslan and his adoptive father to stay with him during recovery, providing continuous support and care. In a world often filled with challenges and hardships, the story of Dr. Abidi, Dr. Plumb, Dominican Hospital, and the young man from Ukraine is a shining testament to the healing power of empathy, skill, and unwavering kindness.

WoW Council at Dominican

T

he Women of Wellness (WoW) Council was established in 2018 to provide education, input, and financial resources for new and existing women's health services at Dominican Hospital. Our mission is to support a comprehensive women's health offering at the hospital, serving the needs of women in Santa Cruz County. The council members model the giving, compassion, friendship, courage, and perseverance demonstrated by the hospital's all-female founders and leaders. Together we work toward our goal to improve

existing services and add new ones that align with the hospital's goals and directions. The WoW Council is a women's giving society chaired by Anissa Novak and vice-chaired by Tiffany Hammer. Membership requests a minimum commitment of $1,000 per year. WoW meets three times annually to gain knowledge of Dominican Hospital's current women's health services. WoW also aims to identify and understand the need for new or improved programs, equipment, facilities, and foster relationships.

TAKE CHARGE

Resilience and Hope

I

n this Focus on Wellness, Medical Fitness and Wellness section we cover several areas to help you individually manage your stress. Along with maintaining a healthy diet and getting enough exercise, managing chronic pain and having good sleep hygiene are essential to help build your resilience. We offer suggested PEP classes and invite you to join the community at the Dignity Health Wellness Center where you can build your community and strengthen your social connections while working to nurture resilience and embrace hope.

Resilience and hope are two profound human qualities that have the power to shape our lives, define our journeys, and guide us through even the darkest of times. Together, they create a formidable force that can help us overcome adversity, find meaning in hardship and ultimately triumph in the face of uncertainty.

FOCUS ON WELLNESS | 2 3

TAKE CHARGE

HOPE is the driving force that fuels our determination and RESILIENCE is the ability to bounce back from setbacks, adapt to change, and navigate the challenges that life throws our way. It is not a fixed trait but rather a skill that can be cultivated and strengthened over time. Resilient individuals possess a unique capacity to remain grounded in the face of adversity, maintain a positive outlook, and continue striving toward their goals. Resilience is not about being impervious to pain or avoiding difficult circumstances; rather, it is about learning from hardships, growing stronger through them, and emerging as a more resilient version of ourselves. It's the ability to bend without breaking, to find inner strength when external circumstances seem insurmountable.

2 4 | FOCUS ON WELLNESS

optimism, even in the bleakest of situations. It is the belief that things can get better, that our efforts will be rewarded, and that a brighter future is possible. Hope is a fundamental human emotion that can inspire us to take action, persevere through challenges, and envision a life beyond our current circumstances. Hope is not blind optimism; it's a conscious choice to focus on possibilities rather than limitations. Resilience and hope are deeply intertwined, with each reinforcing the other. When we face adversity with resilience, we develop a sense of self-efficacy and confidence. This, in turn, strengthens our hope for a brighter future. Hope can bolster our resilience by providing us with a reason to persevere, even when the path forward seems daunting. Together, resilience and hope create a positive feedback loop. Resilience helps us weather life's storms, and hope propels us toward our dreams.

Resilience and Hope

WAYS TO FOSTER RESILIENCE AND HOPE  Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and learning: A growth mindset encourages resilience by viewing setbacks as temporary setbacks rather than insurmountable obstacles. • Try PEP class: Mindfulness- based stress reduction

 Practice self-compassion: Be kind and understanding toward yourself, especially when facing difficulties. Self-compassion allows you to bounce back from failures with greater resilience. • Try a PEP class: Relax & Restore Yoga

 Build a support network: Surround yourself with friends and family who provide emotional support. Sharing your burdens and joys with others can boost your hope and resilience. • Try a PEP class: Sheng Zen

 Set achievable goals: Break down your long-term aspirations into smaller, attainable milestones. Achieving these milestones will fuel your hope and resilience. • Set a goal to sign up for a PEP exercise class

 Stay adaptable: Embrace change and uncertainty as natural aspects of life. The ability to adapt to new circumstances is a hallmark of resilience.

In an ever-changing world, having a community can be a beacon of hope and resilience. Social connections foster a number of health benefits, including boosting moods, reducing stress, and strengthening immune systems. Communities that come together, support one another, and adapt to challenges, demonstrate the remarkable strength of human connections. Individually we can build healthy habits and mindsets, but as a community, we can support each other's steps for building resilience and hope, allowing us to rise above life’s challenges. When we stand together we can find meaning in our experiences, and ultimately, as a whole, create a brighter future filled with promise and possibilities.

THERAPY CORNER

Sleep helps us thrive!

S

leep is incredibly important, yet most Americans aren’t getting enough. It is essential to every system in our body including our heart, lungs, brain, metabolism, mood, and immune system. Our physical, mental, and emotional health all rely on sleep. Adults need approximately 7-9 hours of quality sleep for optimal health. However, most adults get less than 7 hours a night. There are two primary categories of sleep problems: medical/sleep disorders and poor sleep environment/habits. Recent sleep research has shifted from exclusively studying sleep disorders, such as insomnia and sleep apnea, to focusing on the correlation between poor sleeping habits and physical/mental health. More than 80% of older adults who report poor sleeping habits also have at least one major mental or physical disorder including depression, heart disease, or pain.

2 8 | FOCUS ON WELLNESS

WHY IS IT SO HARD TO SLEEP? Our world can be overstimulating and stressful, which can make it challenging to calm our body and mind in order to get a restful night's sleep. The environment, technology, and physical/mental health all affect our ability to achieve quality sleep. Creating and following an effective sleep hygiene routine can help us sleep longer and have better quality sleep.

WHAT IS SLEEP HYGIENE? Sleep hygiene refers to our daily habits and routines that support quality sleep. It’s a holistic approach focusing on multiple factors including regularity, alertness, timing, efficiency and satisfaction. Sleep hygiene routines differ from person to person and may take time to determine what works best for you. A great way to begin building your sleep hygiene routine is to pick one tip and start implementing it today. It can be helpful to use a sleep hygiene journal to track what works best for you!

Create a Routine: ✦ Establish a regular bedtime and waking time ✦ Create a relaxing nighttime routine to help signal your body that is time to sleep

Watch your intake: ✦ Avoid eating 2-3 hours before bed ✦ Avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol 4-6 hours before bed ✦ Stay hydrated but avoid excess water consumption prior to bed to reduce frequent trips to the bathroom

Other Daily activities: ✦ Get natural light upon waking; open windows, take a walk, or sit outside ✦G et at least 30 mins of exercise daily ✦ Avoid napping after 2pm and don’t nap for longer than 20-30 min ✦ Keep a sleep journal to identify and track sleep hygiene routines

Hope for People with Chronic Pain

T

he National Institute of Health (NIH) recently reported approximately 1 in 5 U.S. adults have chronic pain. New cases of chronic pain occur more often than diabetes, depression, and high blood pressure, and two-thirds of these individuals report ongoing chronic pain a year later. Chronic pain can be highly distressing to our friends, loved ones, and neighbors as it impacts many areas of life including work, recreation, sleep, and self-care. The impact can further disrupt family roles, social relationships, and all aspects of well-being. Advances in treatment for chronic pain continue to be developed. Known is the importance of working with your healthcare provider, proper assessment, multimodal interventions, and whole-person care. Treatment may include medication, steroid injections, exercise, physical and occupational therapy, acupuncture, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), relaxation techniques, and lifestyle changes as well as other interventions. A whole-person approach to pain management allows for collaboration and the building of interventions in which physical, sensory, and emotional components are included. Among researched treatment interventions is Empowered Relief® developed by Beth Darnall, PhD of

Stanford University and with NIH research funding. This evidence-based program is delivered in a single two hour session including education, practice, and development of a personal plan. Empowered Relief® was found to have positive results similar to 8 sessions of CBT for improving pain intensity and pain interference in persons with low back pain at both three and six months post-treatment. Empowered Relief® was additionally found to have a positive impact on sleep, depression, anxiety, and fatigue. Empowered Relief® supports a whole-person approach by partnering with individuals. Education about pain, pain responses, and pain management techniques are provided in a classroom setting with support and positive reinforcement. Opportunities for real-time practice during the session includes participation in a guided, calming, deep relaxation exercise and exploration of the connection between pain and your thoughts about pain. Developing new helpful thoughts and thought patterns can move individuals to a new mindset providing hope, help, and healing.

Empowered Relief® is now being offered at PEP, along with many other classes that can help address chronic pain including: • Gentle Conditioning for Your Back & Neck • Yoga: Relax and Restore • Aquatic Exercise for Back Pain • Tai Chi/Qigong classes • Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction
