I always loved photography and was first inspired by travel photography, like the amazing images I would see in National Geographic. I bought my first DSLR when I was living in Broome in 2011, about to leave for 5 months of travelling around Asia. I was determined to learn how to use the camera in manual mode and

not just rely on the automatic setting. One of the highlights was seeing the Angkor ruins in Cambodia, but there were so many beautiful places we got to experience. It was an incredible trip. After getting home I continued using the camera for personal use, experimenting with portraits, landscapes, macro photography, light painting and long exposures. I loved how creative I could be, playing with light and texture, the possibilities were endless. It was when I was studying Graphic Design in 2015 and looking for jobs that I saw a

I like to get to know my couples beforehand to feel what their personality is like and what’s important to them, because we’re all so different. There’s always so much love going around, so I like to document all these special little moments unfolding naturally throughout the day so that the couple can enjoy them and feel all of that love after their wedding photographing the emotion and connection between humans, and using photography as a tool to celebrate everyone just as they are. day is over. How do you establish a connection with your clients to ensure you understand their vision for their wedding photos? I always meet up with my clients in person to get to know them, what they’re into, what they like to do in their spare time, and also so they can get to know me a bit and what I’m like. Once people meet me they can see how relaxed and easygoing I am and it always helps them to feel more comfortable when I’m taking their photo. It’s nice to go for a drink somewhere in Coffs or meet where they are getting married so I can envision what the day will be like and check out the best spots for photos and good lighting. I also send out a questionnaire with some questions to get to know them as well, and any details about the wedding that I need to remember. Continued over... COFFS COAST focus 45

Every wedding is unique. Can you share some memorable moments from weddings you’ve been a part of that stand out in your mind? The best weddings that I’ve photographed are always the ones where people have chosen to do what matters to them, what celebrates who they are, and, their relationship. One of my couples chose to have a fairytale themed wedding, where all the guests dressed up, I just loved that! Their ceremony was so unique with beautiful rituals woven throughout, it was so personal and meaningful to them. Another of my favourites was at Friday Creek Retreat where the couple got up on stage and performed some songs for all of their guests, that was amazing! They absolutely rocked it.

I see what time the sun will be setting that day. I really like to capture those intimate shots of the couple around sunset when the lighting is so beautiful.

Can you share some insights into your pre-wedding preparation? How do you plan for the day to ensure you capture all the important moments? Are there any particular moments or types of shots that you especially like to capture?

What I find most challenging about photographing weddings is when things can run late and there’s a lot of pressure to capture everything with not much time! I’ve got used to just going with the flow and being able to adapt to every situation.

When I’m preparing for a wedding I make sure I’ve got all of the details as well as a timeline of the day, which I often help my couples to write so we have enough time for everything. I usually check out the location beforehand so I can have an idea of what the light is doing and where I will take my couples for their portraits. I see what time the sun will be setting that day. I really like to capture those intimate shots of the couple around sunset when the lighting is so beautiful. I always tell my couples that this is their time to just be with each other (ignoring the fact that I’m there!) and it’s always so special.

What I find really rewarding is when my couples are feeling nervous about having their photo taken, then their reaction when they receive their photos and they’re blown away by the images and how they look. I love helping people to see that they are beautiful when they might be lacking in confidence.

What do you find most challenging and most rewarding about shooting weddings?

Editing is an integral part of the photography process these days. Can you walk us through your post-production workflow and the decisions you make to enhance the final images? Once getting home I transfer all of the photos to a hard drive straight away, then it will take quite a bit of time to go through them all and choose the ones I will use. I don’t know

if everyone realises how much time it takes to edit and finalise all of the images from a wedding, it’s a massive job! Then it’s a process of making any lighting adjustments and colour correction, cropping and fine tuning any elements for each image. I also choose a variety of ones that I love and edit them in black and white as well. After being involved in so many weddings and special events, what advice would you give to couples about to embark on the whole process? The advice I would give to anyone planning a wedding is - ‘do you’. This is your day, and you only get to do it (hopefully) once! Throw out the rulebook and do things your way, whether it’s a bush walk to your favourite spot or a drink where you first met - think of ways you can really celebrate each other and your unique connection. Make your bridal party full of friends that you will have fun with! Don’t think about having your photo taken - just enjoy the day and show your people just how much you love them. TOP TIPS FOR AN INCREDIBLE

B A Y

RWedding ESORT

R E S O R T

IN 2024

For decades, Pacific Bay Resort has been responsible for delivering beautiful beachside and resort weddings. A combination of location, attention to detail and experience can set the tone for an incredible resort wedding.

O

ur experienced team of wedding specialists provide a wealth of insight for brides and grooms. If you are planning a resort wedding in 2024, here are our top tips to make your special day go off without a hitch… or with one… PLAN FOR SUCCESS It’s the old adage “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail’ and nothing could be truer for a wedding. Our tip is to begin planning early. Start with a date and work backwards. Talk to your wedding coordinator and discuss the key moments you will need to meet and the points where you need to confirm specific details like attendance numbers, accommodation, size of bridal party etc. Then begin filling in the gaps and lean on your wedding coordinator to help you identify those little things that you might not have thought of. If it is a destination wedding, making an itinerary is essential. Share your itinerary with your guests and your suppliers and factor in travel time, relaxation periods and contingency plans for unexpected situations. 48 COFFS COAST focus

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE & FLAVOUR This one is especially true for those brides and grooms who don’t live locally so make sure you draw on the local knowledge your wedding coordinator can offer. For something unique and exciting, try working with local vendors to incorporate elements of the destination into your wedding, such as native cuisine, traditional music or locally grown flowers. Your venue should have a list of trusted suppliers that can help to guide you. MAKE IT MANAGEABLE It can sometimes be hard to build parameters around who to invite to your wedding. Do you invite the cousins, work colleagues, uncles, aunties, or just close family? While a large wedding can be one incredible party, an intimate gathering can be just as special and often much more personal, with less complications. Smaller venues and fewer

numbers can offer cost savings that can be allocated towards nicer food and beverage, styling or even the honeymoon. Make sure to take the time to think through your ideal wedding size. IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS THAT MATTER As a guest at a destination wedding, it can often be hard to find a little one-on-one time with the bride and groom, so it is super important to make your guests feel special and welcome. Recognise that guests may be travelling to join in your celebration. It might be nice to suggest activities in the area, arrange transportation from the airport or even organise welcome bags with locally sourced goodies and a special note to make them feel appreciated. Ask your wedding coordinator about a guest wedding accommodation package during your initial meeting. www.pacificbayresort.com.au

energy to help get it up and running. Can you share with us a bit about what River View Island has to offer as a venue?

H

i Jimmy, can you give us some background on the property and when you decided to open it up as a wedding venue?

I decided to open up when a few of my close friends had intimate weddings of their own. They had looked at a few other venues around at the time and kept asking to have them here, so we did ... and things have certainly evolved in a hurry in 5 years. We had many great times with family and friends over the last 15 years just camping, fishing, water skiing and having our own mini concerts and cook ups amongst ourselves and quite simply, River View just relaxes you.

love showcasing our Nambucca River as the backdrop, the history of the Nambucca Valley, the stories of milling our timber from the property to build much of our infrastructure, and the belief and support from family, friends and the community has been simply amazing and continues to be amazing. Did you have a background in events or was it this property that inspired you to get into the wedding industry?

What was it that made you realise it could be the perfect venue for weddings and events?

A bit of both to be honest. I pretty much grew up in Canberra until I was 23 when it still felt like a big country town. In that time my family was involved in co-owning a hotel for many years called the Kingston Hotel which is quite iconic down there. My mother was heavily involved in managing functions for the Hyatt Hotel and the Travelodge as high end venues in Canberra, so being hospitable is certainly in the make up with me for sure.

It’s the way that River View is that really lends itself to the natural wonderland that the Mid North Coast and Nambucca Valley is, and I felt it was time to open our little piece of paradise to anyone that loves what we love. We

We offer you your own piece of private country and waterfront venues on the East coast of Australia to enjoy for up to six days. Our continued aim is to provide the atmosphere where you don't just feel like another number, and on departure after the special day you are actually feeling like one of our friends or even a family member with us and our wonderful sub contractors. Our focus is always to put maximum effort into the things which we can control. Showcasing the environment sometimes comes with it putting on a show, or flexing its environmental muscles to throw a spanner in the works. However, with our Event Coordinator and fantastic staff being involved from the day you book until you have the “Just Married Sign” showing on the rear window the next day after the vows we find a solution! Are there any other local vendors that you work with regularly that you can tell us about? All of them to be honest, with a very broad answer... from the celebrants, florists, cake makers, photographers, videographers, musicians/DJ’s, make up artists and our hair stylists. the past, and continue to have the same philosophy and that is to treat our clients how they would want to be treated in the same position. They will always have our recommendation and belief that they will never let the client down. We have all enjoyed growth in the industry very quickly due to our values and support for one and another.

What has been some of the feedback that you’ve had from your couples so far? A big common one from the very start from their first viewing is ”The photos don’t do this place justice”. We always receive wonderful comments about the atmosphere, the effort from staff and our subcontractors. We endeavour to do our wedding functions once a week because we honestly put maximum effort in for our clients, particularly on the big week of the wedding. What do you enjoy most about having weddings at the property and being involved in so many peoples special days? I enjoy it most when they all hang out and use the venue to relax and enjoy it for what River View was built on. It is about family and friends all getting together and the fact that they can catch up with everyone for up

to 6 days and enjoy the recreational side of our place with skiing and fishing or just using it as a base while they effectively just build up to the wedding day. Some nights I head down to our ceremony area and do a pack down while the wedding has moved up to the Barn Function Centre and you can just hear the most wonderful atmosphere of everyone enjoying themselves up there. It’s really very special and humbling to be by yourself putting a few things away and just listening to the enjoyment of this special time you have helped create. We really enjoy offering the camping side and early access to the venue. This takes away the mad rush of what can really stress couples, of only being able to set up the day before and pack down and be gone by early the next morning. They can start dropping items off and playing with the layout of the Barn from Tuesday (If it’s a Saturday wedding) and then take their time leaving on the Sunday or Monday depending on the accommodation options taken. Have you got any plans or ideas brewing for River View Island moving into the future? As many know down here, I hate sitting on

my hands for too long. We have been super busy turning a few ideas into reality that have been lingering for quite a while, whilst we completed our 2023 year. Our new outdoor cocktail lounge for the barn is built and we are just completing the landscaping around it. Our massive BBQ camping ground camp kitchen is nearly 90% done and will be complete before we re-open in February for our weddings. After our BBQ area is done in the next week, we move up to the Bridal Cottage and create our downstairs outdoor bathroom for the couples to really enjoy a special moment overlooking the Nambucca River. And last, but certainly not least is our River View Paddock to Plate Team taking it to the next level. We have our wonderful balanced team now having our Events and Catering Team under our own banner. The seamless nature of the delivery of a really important part, being the beautiful food, working so well internally with existing events staff, is adding to the service for our couples. On any one night we can have up to 14 staff being in our service roster with our Head Chef, another Chef, and the combined Events and Catering Team making it a really great moment with all hands on deck to deliver whichever one of our catering styles they wish to select for their big day! Tony Rowley, the creative mind behind Titan Sky, shares his musical journey and artistic philosophy in this interview with Coffs Coast Focus.

F

rom his early days in New Zealand, where his love for creativity led him to writing lyrics at just 10 years old, to becoming a singer/songwriter under the name Titan Sky, Tony's passion for authentic expression shines through his upbeat and folky compositions. In addition to discussing his recent work and musical influences, Tony unveils his unique service of crafting personalised songs for couples, offering a tailor-made soundtrack for their special moments. Hi Tony, can you share with us a bit about your back story as a musician? When did you start singing, writing and playing music? Growing up in New Zealand I was creative, I loved drawing and was always tinkering and making things. When I discovered music, I was never particularly interested in playing someone else’s songs, I just saw it as another creative avenue. I began writing my own lyrics

58 COFFS COAST focus

and putting them to guitar around the age of 10 or 11. In high school I sang and played guitar in rock bands and went on to study jazz composition at university. I moved to Australia in 2015 and started performing as a singer/ songwriter under the name Titan Sky. I have since written hundreds of songs; a selection have been released on Spotify and other streaming platforms, with some recorded for film and TV. How would you describe your style of music and performance? Upbeat and folky, with just a hint of country twang. I love writing songs that are thought provoking lyrically, but that also get your feet tapping. I have a bit of a knack for love songs. You’re currently in the process of recording, can you tell us about some of your recent music and what has been inspiring you lately? I've been taking a bit of a slow and steady approach to writing and recording since the birth of our youngest daughter, and I've been

spending a bit more time being a Dad. I've been renting a studio during quieter times of the year and working by myself to produce something a bit more raw and honest. I'm looking forward to releasing some new Titan Sky music this year. The last few years I've been really enjoying a lot of 60's and 70's Rock and Roll and Americana and it's slowly seeping into my recordings. Lots of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Rolling Stones and The Beatles. You do a lot of writing yourself, and also teach music and songwriting (including a sold out course at Camp Creative recently), what do you enjoy most about sharing this artform with others? When it comes to teaching music, my absolute favourite thing to see is the look on someone's face when they realise, they have the power to create something. People are taught their whole lives that creativity is only reserved for special elite or “talented” people. I'm passionate about sharing my love

for music, and I truly believe that everyone is welcome and has something valuable to share inside of them, if they choose to invest a little time. You wrote a special song for your wife which you performed at your wedding, and that has sparked the idea for a service you’re going to be offering others where you write couples their own unique song for their wedding. Can you tell us about this idea and how it is going to work? I have written more songs for my wife than I have about anything else. It's fair to say she's my muse, and certainly my biggest inspiration. She keeps me on my toes and keeps me writing. For our wedding I wrote one special wedding song, but also delivered a short concert of other songs written throughout our relationship. It was a fun alternative to regular speeches, and I thought after that it would be fantastic to offer this as a service for others.

I will then write a unique and personal song that can then be delivered as written word, or even recorded and/or performed at their wedding.
