Floyd Memorial Medical Group Welcomes New Providers Waheed Ahmad, MD Floyd Memorial is pleased to announce vascular expert and board certified general surgeon Waheed Ahmad, MD, FACS, FRSC, recently joined Floyd Memorial Medical Group – Vascular Surgery. Dr. Ahmad graduated from King Edward Medical College in Pakistan, and then moved to the United States where he completed his general surgery residency at the University of Louisville. Dr. Ahmad also completed a three year surgical residency in England and went on to complete research in intestinal transplantation at the V.A. Research Hospital in Chicago.

Dr. Ahmad is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, UK. As such, he works closely with family physicians to resolve his patients’ immediate health concerns. New Middletown Office Relocates to Georgetown

Dr. Stan Schooler Receives Sports Medicine Physician of the Year Award The Indiana Athletic Trainers Association announced at their fall meeting that Floyd Memorial board certified emergency medicine and sports medicine physician Stan Schooler, MD, was selected as the recipient of the Indiana State Medical Association’s Committee on Sports Medicine 2015 Team Physician of the Year Award.

This award is granted to a physician who has provided significant long-term contributions and support to the field of sports medicine.

Currently, Dr. Schooler is an emergency physician for Floyd Emergency Medical Associates (FEMA) and a sports medicine physician practicing out of the Floyd Memorial Physical Therapy - Charlestown Road location. He also sees patients at Floyd Memorial Medical Group – Urgent Care Centers at Highlander Point and Charlestown Road.

Floyd Memorial Foundation Recipient of Horseshoe Foundation Grant The Floyd Memorial Foundation recently received a generous grant to continue funding the therapeutic massage program at the Floyd Memorial Cancer Center of Indiana. The Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County granted $12,500 to fund massage therapy for cancer patients who are Floyd County residents. Patients currently receiving treatment through the Cancer Center of Indiana are eligible for the program.

Floyd Memorial Invests in Operating Room Expansion and Renovation Floyd Memorial Hospital recently completed an expansion of its surgical capabilities with the construction of a new operating room outfitted with the latest surgical equipment from STERIS Corp. and KARL STORZ – Endoskope. In addition, the Hospital is in the process of renovating four other operating rooms, which will be outfitted with the same, high-tech, equipment.

This is a total investment of $2.4 million.

Included in the investment is STERIS’ SignatureSuite™ technology to help reduce patient anxiety by playing soothing and familiar audio-visual content to personalize the operating room experience for them, and the KARL STORZ IMAGE1 SPIES™ system for enhanced quality endoscopic images.

Irregular Heart Rate No Longer an Issue for Georgetown Woman In March of 2015, Linda McGuire wasn’t feeling well just before she passed out at work and hit her head. She was taken to Floyd Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department where they treated her head injury. While at the hospital, Linda found out she had the flu. Three days later after showing no other symptoms, she was sent home.

In July, she passed out again at home.

After going back to Floyd Memorial, Linda was placed in the Observation Unit with a very high heart rate. She was already on medication for high blood pressure.

An abnormal heart rhythm was suspected.

Floyd Memorial Medical Group’s board certified cardiologist and electrophysiologist Satya Garimella, MD, was called in for a consultation. He explained, “Linda’s rapid heart rate needed to be addressed, so we performed an electrophysiology (EP) study.”

The EP study is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure utilizing a sophisticated computer mapping system.

A catheter is inserted in the groin area and threaded to the heart. The state-ofthe-art equipment is able to pinpoint the exact location of abnormal electrical activity in the heart. Floyd Memorial has a catheterization lab equipped with

advanced technology and specially trained physicians, technicians and staff for electrophysiology studies and treatment.

With the use of medications, Dr. Garimella attempted to stimulate Linda’s heart into an irregular rhythm so he could see where the problem was happening.

Linda’s heart remained in regular sinus rhythm. Dr. Garimella suggested placing a loop recorder in her chest to catch an abnormal heart rhythm episode, if and when it happened again, and Linda agreed.

With a loop recorder, if an irregular heart rate occurred, Linda could capture the reading with a hand held activator so the doctor could see the recorded activity and get a better idea of what was happening.

About one week later, while eating lunch at work, Linda’s heart began beating extremely fast, and she came

close to passing out again. The episode lasted around 20 minutes. Linda captured the episode and called Dr. Garimella’s office to let him know. After reading the recorded episode, Dr. Garimella wanted to see her immediately.

Linda’s abnormal heart rate was identified as atrial tachycardia, originating in the upper right chamber.

Dr. Garimella performed another EP study and was able to successfully force Linda’s heart out of rhythm and into atrial tachycardia. By doing this, he was able to find the location of the improperly firing electrical impulse and ablate, or burn, the spot so the impulse would follow the correct pathway and remain in normal sinus rhythm.

“The very next day, I felt like a new person. I didn’t realize I was easily winded and had low energy. I work an early morning shift, 10 hours a day on my feet, so I attributed my lack of energy to the early hours and long work day. I can’t believe the difference in how I feel. I can actually breathe! It’s amazing how you get used to feeling a certain way and take it as normal. I will never take my health for granted,” Linda said.

Grandfather, father, husband and General Mills retiree, Ted Iverson, is a very active man. He loves to golf, pheasant hunt and, occasionally, downhill ski. Unfortunately, Ted injured both shoulders after lifting something he shouldn’t have. He later took a spill down a flight of stairs and injured one shoulder a second time.

The pain and weakness in Ted’s shoulders was getting to a point where he couldn’t sleep at night. He was no longer able to play golf or do many of the activities he loved. He heard about Floyd Memorial board certified orthopedic surgeon Kris Abeln, MD, from his safety director at General Mills, and decided to get a consultation.

Dr. Abeln ordered an MRI after Ted’s exam and learning about his symptoms.

The test showed partially torn rotator cuff tendons in both shoulders. Dr. Abeln explained, “With a partially torn rotator cuff, there are some options. It could be repaired with arthroscopic surgery, or we could use non-invasive platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy.”

PRP therapy is an effective procedure to help heal soft tissue injuries including tendons, muscles and ligaments.

How it Works In the office, a sample of the patient’s blood is drawn, placed in a tube and processed in a centrifuge for approximately 15 minutes. This separates blood into its components, including red blood cells,

platelets and plasma. The injured area is numbed and the platelet concentration is then injected. Once the platelets are injected in the painful area, they start a powerful regenerative process, releasing growth factors which will increase blood flow to the injured area and promote a healing process. The procedure takes 20 to 30 minutes for the patient with no incision or real down time. They are then sent home with, either, exercises, formal physical therapy or light duty for three to four weeks.

Success Dr. Abeln explained, “Ted was a great candidate for PRP since he had only a partial rotator cuff tear. I told him the procedure doesn’t work for everyone.

I also warned him that it could make the pain worse for a week or so after the procedure, then the pain would begin to go away as the swelling decreased.

Depending on how he treated the injured area, it may last one year, six months or the rest of his life.”

“I appreciated Dr. Abeln’s honesty and up-front attitude. I compared the copay of my surgery to the cost of the PRP procedure, since my insurance didn’t cover it, and it was still cheaper.

I decided to go for it,” said Ted. Dr. Abeln added, “PRP therapy allows many patients to avoid the risks of surgery with less down time and quicker recovery. It’s an excellent option that many people don’t know about.”

Ted interjected, “I was amazed at the outcome. I went to physical therapy once a week for 10 weeks at Floyd Memorial Physical Therapy on State Street. Jill Hentrup was a great physical therapist.

She really pushed me. Now I have great range of motion in both arms and can swing a golf club! I can sleep at night and the pain is gone.”

“I know my limitations though, and I am taking care of my shoulders. It is worth exploring PRP therapy, especially before having surgery. I couldn’t be happier with what I did,” Ted said.

“PRP therapy turned out to be extremely successful for Ted. I’m happy he is doing so well. It is a quick and easy procedure that can really bring relief for many people,” said Dr. Abeln.

How does PRP work?

Blood is drawn from a patient into a test tube, and then placed in centrifuge.

PRP is carefully injected into the injured area or inflamed tissue.

What is Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP)?

Blood is a liquid (plasma) that contains red and white blood cells, and platelets. Platelets help clot blood and also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors important in the healing of injuries.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has five to 10 times more platelets than what is typically found in blood. The concentration of platelets—and growth factors—has important implications in healing, and can potentially regenerate tissue and cartilage.

Better Late than Never – Colonoscopy Saves a Life

At the age of 66, Phyllis Wright felt it was time to have a colonoscopy. Phyllis said, “I was feeling tired all the time and not quite myself.” Her primary care physician, Floyd Memorial Medical Group – State Street’s CM Hocker, MD, had been telling her yearly since she turned 50 she needed to have a screening colonoscopy.

Luckily, she heeded his advice in the nick of time.

Phyllis scheduled her colonoscopy with Gastroenterology of Southern Indiana’s board certified internal medicine physician and gastroenterologist Emori Bizer Carrara, MD. Dr. Carrara found and removed a polyp that was cancerous.

Having no way to tell if she was able to completely remove the cancer, the standard of care was to refer her patient to a general surgeon. Floyd Memorial Medical Group board certified general surgeon Douglas Berg, MD, had a test run to see if the cancer had spread, and luckily, it came back negative, Dr. Carrara had removed the cancerous polyps.

Phyllis underwent a laparoscopic partial removal of her right colon - all done through four small incisions in her abdomen. Happy with the minimally invasive procedure, she said, “I feel like Dr. Berg and Dr. Carrara really cared about me. Everyone was friendly.”

Dr. Berg explained, “Phyllis is very lucky we were able to find the cancer and remove it before she had any symptoms.

If it had progressed, it might not have been treatable, or she may have ended up with a colostomy. Phyllis is the perfect example of why colonoscopy screening is so important.”

In accordance with national guidelines, Phyllis underwent a follow up colonoscopy one year later. Fortunately, she did not have any new precancerous colon polyps. According to the same guidelines, her next colonoscopy will be three years later.

Average risk patients should be screened at age 50, or age 45 for African Americans. For people with a first degree relative with colon cancer or a high risk polyp, you should have a colonoscopy 10 years prior to that relative’s diagnosis age.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women in the US, and a cause of considerable suffering among more than 140,000 adults diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year.

When adults get screened for colorectal cancer, it can be detected early, at a stage when treatment is most likely successful. In some cases, precancerous and cancerous polyps can be detected and removed during a colonoscopy.

Symptoms of Colorectal Cancer • Blood in the rectum, stool or in the toilet after a bowel movement • Dark or black stool • Change in shape or caliber of stool • Lower abdominal cramping • Feeling of discomfort or urgency to have a bowel movement but unable to do so • New onset of constipation or diarrhea • Unintentional weight loss

Weight Loss Brings Lifestyle Change After Retirement Denise Hagan had never thought of herself as obese.

She struggled with her weight most of her adult life, but obese was not a word she would have used to describe herself.

After retiring in July of 2014, Denise had a new struggle – grasping life as a retiree. “I wasn’t feeling as active and didn’t have as much energy,” said Denise, “I quickly gained 10 pounds and knew something needed to be done. I didn’t want this pattern to continue.”

A few months later, Denise and a friend who had lost a lot of weight met for lunch so Denise could find out what tips or tricks her friend used to lose weight. That’s where she heard about the Health Management Resources (HMR®) program at the Floyd Memorial Weight Management and Bariatrics Center (WMBC).

Denise attended a free HMR seminar to learn more about how the program worked.

“I’ve tried different diets before, but I could never sustain any real weight loss.

The HMR program was different than anything I had ever heard,” she said.

Denise discovered her weight actually fell into the obese range. “The staff did not scare me with this information.

The seminar helped me understand this program was about learning new health habits and teaching me how to make better choices, so I could change that number,” said Denise.

“And I wanted to make a change for my family and grandchildren.”

Six months later and a weight loss of 43.8 pounds and counting, Denise could not feel better. “I’m more active, my overall flexibility and mobility have improved and my self-image is more positive than ever before,” said Denise. She is even working out now, something the program refers to as physical activity or PA. Denise continued, “There was a dry erase board in the classroom, and each meeting, we had to record how much PA we had finished for the week. This

really held us accountable.

Now, I actually enjoy staying active. Every morning, I do 100 crunches and 50 pushups. This is the first time in my life I’ve ever been able to do a pushup!”

Denise contributes her weight loss success, not only to hard work and perseverance, but also to the HMR program and attending meetings.

“The staff at the Weight Management and Bariatrics Center is easy to talk to and so encouraging. By going to the classes, I get to meet other people who are on the same journey,” she said. “It takes commitment, and is a complete lifestyle change, but it works!”

The HMR® program is a meal replacement program with pre-packaged foods (protein bars, shakes and entrees) that offers clinically proven plans that combine structured diets, physical activity and lifestyle-change coaching.

The program offers weekly classes, which provide accountability, support and education.

Stroke & Aneurysm Vascular Screenings

Cardiac CT Calcium Scoring Screenings

By appointment Floyd Memorial Hospital A CT scan of the heart to detect calcium deposits found in plaque buildup in the coronary arteries. The level of calcium can signal the presence of arthrosclerosis, a disease of the vessel wall, also called coronary artery disease (CAD).
