Donating Your Old Clothes Doing Good Can Be Contagious Reviewed by: Steven Dowshen, MD

easons are changing and your clothes from last year may not fit. If you notice clothes piling up in your family’s closets — and you’re looking for a way to help the less fortunate — donating clothes could be a super-easy start.

S

Gather your family and begin sifting through those crammed closets. As you work, keep these organization basics in mind: • Keep an open mind and let go. If you haven’t worn something in a year or two, chances are you won’t miss it. • Set a target. Maybe for every two items you keep, you give up one. When you buy something new, go through your closet to see if you can donate something else. 12

• Don’t just stop with clothing. Since you’re in the giving mood, expand your donation. Go through your old books, jewelry, purses, sports gear, etc. — maybe you’ll find something that someone else will love just as much as you did. • Be a courteous donor. Throw away clothes with stains, tears, or holes. Save your ratty jeans and shirts for cleaning work around the house or yard work. • Look past resale or consignment shops. Centers like Goodwill are great for donating, but plenty of other organizations could use your things, too. Try places like women’s and children’s shelters or maybe organizations that help teen mothers, migrant workers’ families, or people displaced by fires or natural disasters. Some places accept homecoming and prom dresses and give them to students who can’t afford to buy them. • Call ahead. Not every organization or shelter accepts “gently used” clothes. Many will only take new items, so do your research first to avoid a wasted trip. Doing good can be contagious. You might decide to keep the spirit of giving going year round — not just during the holidays. Look for other opportunities to help out on your own or as a family. Each season should be full of thanks and giving.

When your heart starts pounding so much that you can feel a thumping in your throat, it may feel like you “have your heart in your mouth.” But the good news is that your heart can’t move into your throat, mouth, or anywhere else. It stays put!

By the Skin of Your Teeth

f you pass a test by just a few points or win a contest by a tiny bit, people might say you did so "by the skin of your teeth." In other words, you just barely did it. The only problem with this expression is that your teeth don't have skin! But sometimes they have a film on them, especially first thing in the morning. Keep a Stiff Upper Lip or Keep Your Chin Up eeping a stiff upper lip can be hard to do and that’s why it became an expression. When someone gets upset, his or her lips might tremble. If you keep a stiff upper lip, you’re trying not to show you are upset. This expression dates back to the 1800s, but it is still used today.

K

“Keep your chin up” has a similar meaning. When someone is sad or depressed, the person might drop his or her head, bringing the chin down toward the chest. A chin held high shows confidence and optimism. So the next time you get a lower grade than you expected, keep your chin up and try to do better next time!

f you’ve ever been very sick, you may have used this expression. Because dogs eat just about anything they find, they often get sick. So it’s fitting to describe someone who is not feeling well as being “sick as a dog.” Arf!

hen I was a little girl, I used to watch this wonderful, old movie that brought me into a great world of magic and folklore. Parts of it frightened me, the ghost-like banshee most of all. But other parts fascinated me. What am I talking about? What I am talking about folks is the famous Disney classic, Darby O’Gill and The Little People. Set in a small village in Ireland, the movie is about an old man, Darby, who discovers an underground world of leprechauns and ends up catching one.

The appearance of the leprechaun depends on what part of the country you are in. Prior to the 20th century, the leprechaun adorned a red suit as opposed to the famous green suit of today. They are small creatures, small enough to sit on one’s shoulder. Legend says that they inhabited the Isle of Ireland long before the arrival of the Celts. They are also said to be great musicians, adept at playing the fiddle, whistles and the harp. I am reminded here of the iconic scene when Darby comes upon their lair, gold flowing But what of this legend of the everywhere and the sounds of leprechauns? Where did it come from? Leprechauns are mythical small fairies of Ireland, said to bring mischief to anyone who comes across them. They spend most of their time hidden away and collect mounds of gold, which they hide in enormous pots. If ever captured, they can grant three wishes to the human in exchange for their release. But sometimes, those wishes can go awry, as they adore causing trouble. The name leprechaun is derived from the Irish word leipreachán, defined as “a pigmy or sprite”. The earliest known reference to the leprechaun appears in the medieval tale known as the Echtra Fergus mac Léti (Adventure of Fergus son of Léti). The text contains an episode in which Fergus mac Léti, King of Ulster, falls asleep on the beach and wakes to find himself being dragged into the sea by three lúchorpáin (a deviation of leprechaun). He captures his abductors, who grant him three wishes in exchange for release.

Boating Under the Influence Save a Life Today!

oating season is coming up and if you are considering unearthing your boat from its boat cover and taking it out on the water, listen up.

lack of experience, alcohol takes an even stronger effect. Alcohol effects cover nearly everything: judgment, vision, balance, and coordination. With all these abilities being effected, the probability of a boating accident is increased.

The results of a recent study have shown that boating under the influence of alcohol is no different from driving under the influence; which is why it is illegal. Researchers from the DUI Foundation have linked roughly half of all boating accidents to alcohol and drug consumption.

The DUI Foundation reported that boat operators that have a blood alcohol concentration level of 0.10% or above are estimated to be over ten times more likely to die in a boating accident than a boater who has not consumed any alcohol. The most common types of boating accidents, involving alcohol, result in the boat overturning and boaters falling overboard. Boaters under the influence are much more likely to drown or suffer from an accidental death involving the boat, waterskiing or wakeboarding. Boating can be dangerous even while sober; there are many factors that can quickly threaten the safety of the passengers. Wind speed, weather and water patterns can have a strong effect on the way the driver needs to handle the boat. Without a boat cover or awning, alcohol can prove to be more potent while on a boat than on land; the combination of sun and the water below dehydrates the body faster and makes it easier for consumers to become drunk faster. Consuming alcohol while driving a boat disable’s the driver’s ability to recognize and adequately handle all the components that determine how fast and in what direction the boat should be going.

B

The study shows that bodies of water are the second most common scene for accidental deaths in the United States, the first being highways. The United States Coast Guard estimates that 60,000 or more nonfatal boating accidents take place annually. The financial result of these accidents is valued at about $240 million each year. Although there are many reports of nonfatal accidents, the result of boating under the influence does not usually prove so merciful. The Coast Guard began recording boating accidents in 1961 and from that year through 1992 800 lives were lost due to alcohol-related boating accidents. That number is higher than the records show for airplane or train fatalities. Another issue regarding boating under the influence is the lack of experience the boat driver usually has. Boating is typically a seasonal activity and boat drivers usually only drive the boat occasionally. With the

If you are planning to remove your boat cover and hit the lake, consider leaving the alcohol behind. Boating can be a fun and safe activity if the proper precautions are made. However, boating is dangerous enough without the influence of alcohol. In case of emergency, boaters should have a clear head so that they can quickly solve a problem or, oftentimes, save a life.

Sudoku

Adult Living | CROSSWORD & SUDOKU FUN

A sudoku puzzle is a logic puzzle which is solved using logic and reasoning. Though the number of squares in the grid may vary, a standard Sudoku puzzle is a 9x9 grid divided into nine 3x3 blocks in which some of the numbers are given. The object of the puzzle is to fill in the rest of the grid using only the numbers 1 through 9 so that no number repeats in any block, row or column. The difficulty is determined by how many and which numbers are given and where they are placed in the grid and can range from very easy to extremely challenging. Though sudoku puzzles generally use numbers as symbols, no mathematical skills are required to solve the puzzle. View our next issue for the correct answers to this Sudoku puzzle.

Ingredients 1 large (Yukon gold or similar) skin on and thoroughly washed 1/2 cup grated cheddar or mozzarella 3 tablespoons tomato sauce, try the Quick Tomato Sauce below 1 tablespoon olive oil Quick Tomato Sauce 1- 14 ounce can diced tomatoes 1 shallot diced 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon ketchup 1 teaspoon light brown sugar salt and pepper, to season

Helpful Tip: You will only need a small amount of this sauce for the Pizzette Bites. The rest freezes well and can be served with pasta or used as a topping for pizza. Alternatively you can use a ready-made tomato sauce.

Instructions 1. If making the Quick Tomato Sauce: Heat the oil in a large frying pan and sauté the shallot and garlic for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Add the remaining ingredients and bring to the boil, squashing the tomatoes with the back of a wooden spoon. Boil, stirring frequently for 15 minutes or until the sauce has thickened. 2. For the Pizettes: Preheat the oven to 400° F. 3. Cut 8 large slices of potato, each around one twelfth inch thick, cutting crosswise from the centre of the potato. You won’t need the thinner end bits of the potato but these will keep for up to 2 days in the fridge, covered with cold water, and can be used for mashed or boiled potatoes 4. Brush each potato slice with oil and season with a little salt and pepper. Lay the slices on a baking sheet lined with non-stick baking parchment and bake for 10 minutes. Turn the slices over and bake for a further 8-10 minutes, until golden and crisp. Watch carefully for the last 2 to 3 minutes 5. Top each potato slice with around 1 teaspoon of the tomato sauce and sprinkle with the cheese. Bake for a further 5-7 minutes, or grill 2-3 minutes more or broil until the cheese has melted. Let cool slightly before serving. (Not suitable for freezing or reheating.)

Should Women Fight In Combat?

ecently as many have read, the Department of Defense and Washington have approved women to serve in combat roles within the military.

Leading the decision is the fact that Washington feels all members of the military both male and female have the equal right to be assigned to combat military units and serve in combat zones. This will enable females within the military to serve in combat units and provide them with the Needless to say the decision provoked opportunity for advancement. many discussions both in veterans clubs, VA hospitals, those retired in civilian life It is my thought that everyone should have a level and among the active military. plain filled when it comes to advancement however sending my sister or wife into a hot fire zone While it is difficult to discuss such a decision makes me wonder if we could leave that specific without sounding sexist,a few facts jump requirement out of the picture. out and make me ask why the decision CONTINUE TO NEXT PAGE was made.

Adult Living | VA Memoirs The feeling that woman can serve in combat is apparently shared by a certain number of female service members who feel they could or have served under combat conditions. If they have served in combat I applaud them for their service and ability, however this is not a ‘G.I.Jane’ movie and someone could, and most likely will be, seriously injured in the long run. Not everyone, male or female, will make it in a combat unit. While this may sound like females have never served in an active ‘hot’ zone in the combat theater in fact it is not true. In Vietnam how many remember the nurses who were assigned to the field hospitals and were such a nice sight to behold If you had the unfortunate luck to be carried into one of those locations. These field hospitals were subject to being struck by enemy fire as much as any other location. True, the females were not in the ‘bush’ carrying a combat pack and weapon but they were close enough to the action to win my respect.

44

But lets be honest. Do wives at home want to learn that their husbands are sharing a long stint in the field with other females? I wonder if the Pentagon took a poll of service wives if they wanted females sharing combat duties with their significant others, how it would turn out. If you look at the requirements in basic training which determines the physical endurance of a person a male soldier who is between 17and 21 years of age must do 35 pushups, 47 sit-ups and run two miles in less then 16 minutes and 36 seconds. While a female of the same age bracket has that reduced to 13 pushups, 47 sit-ups and they have 19 minutes and 42 seconds to complete the run. What does this reflect? Only, that we are simply made different and the military is trying to level the playing field in order that all may qualify for entry to military service.

Ages! | www.FloridaCreativeLiving.com For For All All Ages! | www.FloridaCreativeLiving.com

However one must ask if the male candidate fails and the female does not is that fair? Yes,it is because the candidates are of different makeups. It is simple and the fault of no one. God made us this way. That is fair and understandable. However in combat it may not pass the smell test. And it most certainly will have an impact on Special Op Units such as Special Forces and SEAL units. What it does not reflect is that the 83 pound combat pack which soldiers will carry are tough for most females to carry and women are less likely to be able to march under load , the 12.4 miles in a time limit of some five hours. I hesitate to ask how a female in a combat situation with all the gear she will be wearing combined with a weapon and ammunition will have the ability to drag a 190 pound wounded comrade to safety. CONTINUE TO NEXT PAGE

Adult Living | VA Memoirs

While we could go on as to the physical requirements which will occur under combat conditions it is clear to understand that the list is long and demanding. But the elephant in the room so to speak is the unspoken fact that men are basically trained to protect women. I am aware many females reading this will say ‘hogwash’. Sorry ladies it’s true. If we see a female in distress, I think I can speak for most male service members, we will move to correct the situation. I simply do not think that will ever change, regardless of how many articles and position papers the Pentagon comes up with. What will we think when we learn of the female soldier that was taken prisoner of war. A male soldier being taken prisoner is bad enough, however we deem he can survive with his training. A female being taken prisoner takes on a whole different scenario.

And let us not forget the selective service or ‘draft’ as many of remember from the past. If females in the military desire equality and serve in such units, I would suspect that if a draft ever was reinstated would they be subject to call as well? How do you draft a male and not a female if the playing field is level. And finally, do we really want our daughters receiving that letter that tells them that the next two years of their life is subject to adhering to United States Army policy and regulations. I think not. Females serving within the military have and will continue to enhance the branch they serve in. We are fortunate to have them in years past and today. However I have to ask why now, is such action being taken. War is a nasty business. The Department of Defense and the level ‘gender-neutral playing field’ which they have created, I still think needs to be examined more closely.

We have watched the news and observed several females from the Golf war which suffered terrible injuries and lost limbs. They displayed great courage and even now as they try and adjust to a different life style with such injuries they also display that courage. However, when I observe a female with such injuries it somehow takes on a more serious meaning.
