Kids ages 6-10 (junior varsity division) and 11-14 (varsity division) are eligible to participate. The first 450 registrations will receive a complimentary, race-day ‘Stay and Play’ ticket to Adventure Island. Participants will also collect a race-day ‘Swag Bag’, which will include an Under Armour T-shirt. All competitors will be given a finisher’s medal upon completion of the race. Relays for Life events are happening throughout many South Florida communities during the year. This one is scheduled for the Miami Gardens/Opa Locka community. We will be raising funds for cancer research and support programs and awareness about cancer by having teams of people camp out at the Betty T Ferguson Recreational Complex. We will also be selling candle luminarias that will be lit and placed around the track in honor of cancer survivors or in memory of those who lost the fight. pring time has officially arrived with rainy days and Pollen Season. I have to say minus the allegries, Spring is one of favorite seasons. Here are some suggestions to help you spring right into Spring with a great attitude below: 1. Start off with a spring cleaning. 2. Consider getting a new look. 3. Find new ways to relax. 4. Pick or buy some new season flowers. 5. Go outside. 6. Draw, paint or photograph spring scenery.

This issue of Florida Creative Living front cover features both of my girls who have a form of Autism called Asperger’s which is considered to be on the “high functioning” end of the spectrum. Affected children and adults have difficulty with social interactions and exhibit a restricted range of interests and/or repetitive behaviors. Motor development may be delayed, leading to clumsiness or uncoordinated motor movements. Some people have asked me in the past, “Why would I want my children labeled”. My simply response is, “Early Intervention helps teach them how to cope with the challenges of having Asperger’s. I’m proud to say that the therapies(Physical Therapy, Speech, Occupational Therapy) that my girls receive have allowed them to excel in their school and social settings. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you notice that your child/children aren’t meeting their milestones. As a parent, it is our responsibility to be an advocate for our children so they too can live a productive and happy life. Mark your calendars April 2, 2015 is World Autism Awareness Day. Every year, autism organizations around the world celebrate the day with unique fundraising and awareness-raising events. How will you celebrate?

Dear Dr. June: I think it’s true that people don’t follow through on their New Year’s resolution. I know I don’t, but I want to be better this year. I’m just like everybody else who wants to get healthier. This year I want to do more than that and start enjoying life more. I’ve had some tough years in the past. Since you’re the life coach, I was hoping you can give some tips. Thanks, JG, North Florida Dear JG: I have two suggestions. First, face forward and don’t look back at what is already over in the past. You know, it’s much easier walking forward than backward. Not relieving yourself of the negatives from the past weighs heavily on you. So, as you move forward, you can start dropping off the weight from the past. Don’t you feel much lighter now? Second, no more just wanting; it’s time to start doing. Maybe you don’t have all the resources to do some things. Just start working towards those and dive into those things you can actually enjoy now. Maybe it’s not simple, but it’s probably easier than resisting your favorite dessert or getting up early to work out. You have learned lessons from the past to help you move forward this year and in the future. Leave the regrets behind to enjoy a brighter future. You’re at the helm of the ship. Where will you sail?

Dear Dr. June: At first I felt worried because I am going back to school in my thirties. It’s exciting for me and have been enjoying it. To my surprise there are a lot of others my age in college too. I love college, but I have also fallen in love. I’ve never been married but lived with my high school sweetheart for almost 10 years. After the break up I decided to change careers too and that’s why I am finally in college. All this to say that my new love wants to get married, but I am hesitant because of being school. I also won’t live with him or anyone again without being married. I want to be a wife and mother, but I also want to be a college graduate with a better career. I have at least two more years before I graduate. How do I handle this? Choices in Florida Dear Choices: You definitely should discuss this with your “new love”. Explain to him you want marriage and kids and the whole nine yards along with a brighter career. He needs to understand this and determine if he can handle it. My guess he will be supportive. You’re in college now and the relationship is going well. You’ll just have to chart a course together for your marital relationship. You can get married and still complete your education. You can even have a baby and complete your education. There are online classes, mini-semesters, and various ways to take courses that can work with various circumstances. If you think about it, getting married and having children while in school, before starting your career, may even work out better for you. So, step one talk to your future husband. Step two, talk to the advisors about the course options they offer at the college. Step three, put together a schedule that works well in planning your marital future.

A

s I sit in my room listening to romantic music allowing myself to explore my needs, I notice that with every song there arises within me the need for the sensation produced by the touch of someone with whom I truly connect. That butterflies in your stomach feeling, the energy of someone who makes your heart sing. I find within me the need for that sort of romance in

which I allow myself to dream and feel to the fullest, a romance that reminds me that I am alive to be able to feel so intensely as though I can reach the sky. I began to engage with the experience of online dating sites to see if I could once again find that person who makes me feel those butterflies that I love. For the first time in my life, I decided to give online dating a try and boy, oh boy, two weeks into this adventure and I already have such admiration for all of the men and women who pursue this avenue of dating.


I come to realize what is missing from this dating experience: that first spark that ignites when you meet someone, that spark that occurs as a chemical reaction from the mist of elements within you and the other— allowing the energy to capture your attention—and all you want to do is be there, present with that other person. There is no presence with these online dating sites as the focus of connection seems to be merely based upon the way we look and what our profile says with words. Where is the feeling in these sites? Where is the emotion? It seems that all you will find is someone who will connect with you for reasons that don’t even touch the surface of who you really are; reasons that will change with time for the body will decay and the profile picture you see will no longer represent reality. I embrace the river of life; I do not know what tomorrow will bring or the person I will become. The one who looks at profile right now is looking at something I am not, for who I am is passion. Who I am is love. Who I am is intensity. These things cannot be felt through an online profile.

Watch Your Back! 13 Tips for a Healthy Back

he three weakest links in the body are the neck, knees and back. If any of these three parts are out of commission, you know it. Your whole day is affected. Just about everything you do affects your back. Most people will have back pain at some point in their life. Back pain can be caused by being overweight, performing repetitive movements, sitting, standing, stress and improper lifting procedures. The back is very complicated and taking care of it now can go a long way toward preventing many forms of back problems in the future. Here are some tips for keeping your back healthy and strong: 1. Practice good posture. Slouching puts undue stress on your back. 2. Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight puts stress on the back. 3. Eat well. We need calcium and vitamin D among other nutrients to keep bones in good shape. 4. Quit smoking. Studies suggest that smokers are more likely to experience disc problems. 5. Strengthen your abdominal and back muscles. By keeping your abdominal muscles strong and maintaining good posture, you will be creating a natural “girdle” around your body to give your back good support. 6. Keep the spine flexible with yoga and gentle exercises. It’s been said that a flexible spine is the secret to a youthful body.

7. Exercise regularly to keep your body fit and strong. Many back injuries happen when people who are not active play a vigorous game of football or softball on the weekend. Condition your body with regular exercises so you can play sports without pain. 8. Reduce stress. Tense people often have tense backs. Get enough sleep, exercise, be positive and practice deep breathing regularly. 9. Be comfortable. Avoid restrictive clothing and high heeled shoes which can put stress on your back. 10. If you stand for long periods of time, raise one foot on a box to lessen the strain on your back. Check your posture and try to maintain the natural curve in your spine. Take frequent breaks if possible. 11. If you must sit for long periods of time, get up every 30 minutes, walk around and do a few stretches. 12. If you work at a computer, adjust your chair so your elbows to wrists are parallel to the floor and the screen is at eye level. 13. Use your legs when lifting. Bend at the knees and straighten your legs as you lift the object. This puts less strain on your back. We often don’t appreciate a healthy back until we’re laid up with a bad one. Take a proactive approach to a strong, healthy and pain-free back.

pring is the perfect time to be get your kids outside and what better way to do that than by planting a garden. Here are a few fun ideas to get your kids interested in gardening:

Theme Gardens Theme gardens are great for any age. Elementary school children may enjoy an alphabet garden. With 26 plants, one for each letter of the alphabet, you may need a large space. On a smaller scale use only the letters in your child’s name. For older kids a Chocolate garden may be appealing. In a chocolate garden you can include plants that not only have chocolate names, Hot Chocolate Day Lily or Chocolate Chip Bugleweed, but are chocolate colored, Chocolate Soldiers and Dark Chocolate Coleus. Some plants even have a chocolate aroma like Chocolate Mint or Chocolate Flower. Zoo gardens are fun for young animal lovers. Choose only plants with animal names like Cardinal flower, Tiger lily, Catnip, Snapdragon, Foxtail Ferns, Elephant Ear, Bat Face Plant, Snake Plant and Monkey flower. Does your kid love bugs? Make it a bug garden instead with Lizard’s Tail, Spider Lily, Bee Balm and Butterfly Weed. How about sea creatures? Oyster Plant, Shrimp Plant, and Lobster Claw would work well. Pollinator Gardens Not just for butterflies, have your kids take it one step further and plant a pollinator garden to attract bees, hummingbirds and butterfly. Plant suggestions include Cardinal flower, Honeysuckle, Phlox, Mint and night blooming Cactus for the bats. Do not forget nectar and host flowers like Milkweed, and Tickseed. Be sure to provide a source for water and shelter too.

Edible Flower Gardens Vegetable gardens are nice but I bet your children will be surprised to learn they can eat Roses. Your edible flower garden should be grown from seeds or purchase organic grown plants to make certain the plants have not been treated with pesticides or fertilizers. Always exercise caution, only eat flowers you know for a fact are edible. A few edible flowers include Marigolds, Roses, Pansies, Violets, Mint, and Hibiscus. Mini Dish Gardens Short on space? How about creating a mini garden? Containers can be anything from a small shallow bowl or a metal lunch box to an old drawer or a Tonka truck. Herbs, Succulents and mini plants work best. Your child can personalize theirs by adding doll furniture or miniature accessories to create a fairy garden or Legos to make a LEGOLAND garden. Twigs, bark or Popsicle sticks work nicely for fences, furniture and bridges, while buttons and pebbles are stepping stones in a mini craft garden. Inside Gardens Need a rainy day project? Start your garden inside from seed. Instead of using an ordinary garden pot start your seeds in a sponge. Soak the seeds, saturate the sponge and place it on a plate then lay the seeds on top of the sponge. Be sure to mist the sponge every couple days. Your kids will love watching the seeds sprout. Content Creation is NOT

o you don’t have a content strategy? Don’t panic. Yes, your business needs one, but if you’re in business at all, you probably do have a content creation strategy – you just don’t realize it.

Discovering Your Content Strategy In everything you know about your customer base, your business’s seasonal fluctuations, industry trends, and your standard operating procedures, there exists a wealth of content. Sorting through it will take some time; spinning it into useful, educational content for your prospects will take more time. But this isn’t rocket science – unless of course your business is rocket science.

In which case – well, actually, the same strategy applies! Assuming your business is rocket science, let’s look at how you could start crafting your content. Where you’ll find great content: Your company’s history Did you fall in love with rocket science when you got a toy airplane on your third birthday? There’s a blog post in that story. Did you fail miserably at your science fair project, which kindled a lifelong “do-it-better” philosophy? That may be the basis for your mission statement – and a blog post entitled “The Story Behind our Mission Statement.”


Your best customers Study your best customers. Why do they do business with you? What do they tell their friends about your company? These are practically readymade tweets. (“I love that you take appointments online,” said one of our customers today. “I was on Mars when my rocket’s check-engine light came on. I just emailed to let you know I needed a service appointment, and you were ready when I got there!”) Seasonal stuff This really isn’t rocket science – except in our hypothetical example. If spring is your busy season for boosters, tweet ahead of the season to tell customers and prospects you’re ready to help them get ready for their busy season. Tell them about your expanded business hours. Or offer a discount on pre-season service. Industry News & Trends When the astronaut training committee changes its rules to increase the number of required in-flight training hours for certification, it may not directly affect the booster business, but your customers will be interested. When entertainment companies are dropping their prices on satellite TV service to rockets, you can bet your customers will want to read about it – and your take on it. After all, you’re the industry insider. Standard Operating Procedures So how can your standard operating procedures turn into captivating blog posts? Think customer education. Your life will be easier if your customers know how to fill out a finance application for turbocharged boosters and accessories. Help your customers understand customization options before they buy – they’ll be happier knowing how to select the racing stripes and cupholders they want. Go to your SOP manual and look at each page, thinking, “how would I explain this to a customer or prospect?” The answer just might be your next blog post.

Adult Living | BUSINESS Organize What You’ve Discovered A content strategy uses many different types of content, from short and pithy tweets to in-depth, how-to ebooks. Review the list of content-rich information you’ve discovered and identify which pieces will work best where. (Hint: it can all be re-tooled and then, re-purposed in another channel.) To have a strategy, you have to identify where your content belongs, in what form, and when it should be published. In other words, you’ll need to get organized. A thousand tools exist to help – but at the most basic, you’ll need a spreadsheet and a calendar. Of course, if your business is rocket science, you’ll probably want a highertech solution. Content for People Who Hate To Write While you’ll use a variety of different content in different channels, most of your pieces won’t be very long. You’re not writing a book! Just one word at a time. As you can see in the examples above, a long story (about the history of your company, for example) can be the basis for an e-book, a long blog post, and links to those posts on Twitter and Facebook. That’s what’s cool about a content strategy – once you’ve started looking at the content around you, you’ll start to see many ways to use it. It’s not rocket science, but once you’ve identified your content creation strategy, you’ll see your customer engagement soar.

W

hen you speak to Hal Packard you realize after a few moments that for a man of 93 years of age he has a remarkable talent to recall past days of his military service.

He quickly recalled the day in 1942 when he realized that he needed to do his part for his country and coupled with an intense desire to serve, went to join the Air Force. “I always had this desire to fly”, he recalled. “From the time I was fourteen years old I was always at a airport or near a crop duster attempting to get into the air. I just loved to fly” While attempting to enlist, his draft board in New York quickly informed him he had already been selected to be drafted making a voluntary enlistment not possible. “I think I was duped”, he recalled. However later like hundreds of others he bid farewell to loved ones and ended up in Camp Pickett, Virginia among other

military installations during the following year while being trained in the medical field. “I raised hell. I wanted to fly but the Army had other ideas. I asked for a transfer but nothing worked and in the end I was selected with some others to ship out to the Pacific”, said Hal. What Hal did not realize was that he was to play an important part in the invasion of Saipan by the United States Marines and Army which later was reported to be one of the bloodiest battles of the war with Japan. More then 3,000 Americans died in the battle for Saipan and the discussion of how hard a battle was fought by all involved still is spoken about today by those who have knowledge of the serious battles fought in the Pacific.

Adult Living | VA MEMOIRS different. Initially reluctant when asked to recall those days in the Pacific, Hal came around and spoke from the heart. When asked what he remembers most from his days in the Army he hesitated, his eyes swelled with tears and he sadly stated, “My two close friends who went into the Army Air Force who were on the B-17 bombers and they never came back home. I often wonder why I did and they did not”.

Hal like many others returned home after turning down requests to reenlist. “I was very angry that I did not have the opportunity to fly during he war” he recalled. “I do not think I will forget that and just wanted out”. Hal did return home however his assistance to the military took a different turn and he gave of his time and efforts to many of the military clubs and organizations in the area of Zephryhills, Florida. His main effort with several close friends was to form an AMVETS Club which they soon established. “It was small and after awhile we moved to a larger building on Gall Blvd. A lot of work went into those buildings. Then we finally moved to our present location which is on Airport Road in Zephyrhills and this seems to be the perfect location for us. We are doing fine and the members are happy. That is what counts.” Barbara Pooler, Post Commander of #550 praised Hal and his partners all of who are charter members of the post. Recalling their efforts she stated, “all of these individuals are the reason we have such a great organization today and we

certainly appreciate their efforts.” In a recent meeting Hal was recognized by the membership for his efforts and hard work. The comments read, “Hal has turned 93 years young. When he was a young man he was one of five who met in a backyard to start an AMVET Post. Hal is the only living one of the group today. Hal is our only living charter member and from his dreams came AMVETS Post 550 now the 4th largest AMVETS Post in the State of Florida.” Bill Russett a member put it simply, “Hal is just a great American. He truly cares about his country and the AMVET Post.”

We salute Hal Packard as well as Dave Guy, Chuck Miller and Clyde Drummond, all charter members who worked tirelessly after their tour of service was completed to provide a meeting place for those of us who can now recall the days of past and speak well of the efforts of those who made such an establishment possible. Every soldier, sailor, marine or airman who has served in a war have their own memories of the war they fought. These memories when spoken of will bring back memories-some good and some terrible along with a treasure-trove of recollections which can make us laugh or make us cry. At AMVETS Post 550 because of his efforts over the years many along with Hal are doing their part to provide a location where we can keep that history alive. Good Job Gentlemen.

What Girls Say About: The Pressure to Be Pretty

urvey Says: Girls Worry About Their Looks Imagine a group of 100 girls. How many think they are beautiful or pretty? Only 41 of them, according to our recent survey of 11,500 girls.

2. Take great care of yourself by eating well, exercising, and getting enough sleep. You’ll feel great! 3. Do your best to feel good (or at least pretty OK) about how you look. Your mom and others who love you can help with this.

What about the other girls? Of the rest, 19% (or 19 out of 100) said they were not pretty, and another 40% said they were not sure. Our survey also found that more than half of girls worry about their weight and say they spend a lot of time thinking about the way they look. Some even said they do this “constantly.” And half (50%) of girls said they usually don’t like the way they look in a selfie.

It’s not about looking magazine-cover beautiful. When you hold yourself to impossible standards, it only tears you down and puts too much focus on being perfect. Instead, like your looks. Then how you look won’t take up so much space in your brain and you can work on other, more interesting stuff.

That’s a problem and here’s why: When girls don’t feel attractive, they often don’t feel good about themselves in general. It doesn’t mean you can never have a bad hair day. Of course, that happens. But if you only have negative thoughts and feelings about the way you look, it can wear a girl down. You might not feel very important or valuable. And you are definitely important and valuable.

Like what? Like sports, or art, or school, or music, or volunteering, or reading, or planting a garden, or learning to do computer code. Most girls in our survey agree this is a good idea. A big majority of girls (74%) said they’d choose “being really good at something” over “being pretty and thin.” Exactly!

Here’s What Girls Can Do Here are three helpful steps to take.

So put your energy into what you enjoy and want to strive toward. Then, in time, you’ll accomplish a bunch of things and you’ll feel great about you — all you are and all you can become. Beautiful!

1. If you feel pressure to be pretty or thin, talk to someone. Your mom is a good choice.

id you ever look at your parents and wish they were healthier?

ou’re not the only one. We did a survey of kids and 46% said they worry about their parents’ health. And 69% of kids would like their parents to make changes to be healthier. Maybe your mom and dad would be surprised to learn that you are concerned about them. Here’s some good news: We also surveyed parents, and they said that if their kids asked them to, they’d work extra hard to get healthier. So let’s do something about it. If you talk with your parents in the right way, you might inspire your mom and dad to make some changes, like exercising more, eating more fruits and vegetables, or even quitting smoking. Here are 6 tips on talking to your parents about their health habits: 1. Create an idea list. Try to remember what got you thinking about this topic. Is there an unhealthy thing you’d like to see them stop doing, or do less often? Is there a healthy habit — like exercising or eating fruits and vegetables — that you’d like to see them do more often? Get your list together. And don’t forget to add relaxing more and getting more sleep — two great, healthy ideas for parents and kids! 2. Practice how to say it. Changing can be tough. And it’s not always easy to hear that someone you love thinks you need to do it. So you’ll want to bring up this topic in just the right way. If your parents wanted you to make a change — like spending less time on electronic devices — how would you like them to ask? A gentle, caring approach often works best. Avoid insults or criticisms. Instead, you might tell your mom or dad: I want you to be healthy and strong so we can do a lot of fun stuff together. Do you think we could eat more healthy foods/exercise more/slow down and relax for a couple hours a week?

3. Find the right time to bring it up. Pick a moment when everyone’s relaxed and there’s time to talk. 4. Be willing to pitch in! In our survey, a whopping 85% of kids said they’d be willing to make healthy changes if it would help the whole family. You might be willing to go for a walk after dinner, help make a healthy meal together every Sunday, or pitch in and do a few more chores if it helped your parents feel less stressed. Let your parents know you’re willing to make an effort. 5. Make a decision together. Once you’ve brought up the subject, remember that both you and your parents should agree on which steps to take next. It helps to pick a single goal and be specific. It can be overwhelming if you try to make too many changes all at once, your goal is too general, or you don’t have specific steps in mind. For example, here are some possible action steps to agree on if your family goal is to eat healthier: • I’ll eat 5 servings of fruits and veggies every day. • I’ll eat breakfast every morning. • I’ll stop buying snacks from the vending machine. • I’ll drink water instead of sweet tea at lunch. • I’ll have an apple or nuts as my snack instead of cookies. 6. Cheer them on! Encourage your parents as the family starts making changes. Tell them you’re proud of them. An extra hug or a homemade card of encouragement can give them the boost they need to keep going down the healthy road. What a great way to show how much you care! ©1995-2015. ll-terrain vehicles, or ATVs, are off-road vehicles used for things like farm work and riding on trails. In most states, it’s legal for teens to ride them, even without a driver’s license.

But with the thrills come big risks like rollovers and collisions. Here’s how to stay safe on an ATV: • Be at least 16 years old. Health and safety experts strongly discourage ATV use by anyone younger than 16. Operating an ATV demands that drivers be skilled at making quick adjustments, such as speeding up, slowing down, and shifting their weight to help turn the ATV. People under 16 are less likely to have the physical strength and decision-making experience necessary to drive an ATV safely. • Get safety certified. Before you ride an ATV on

a trail, learn how to do it safely in a controlled setting. Some states require teens to be 16 and have a safety certificate before they can ride an ATV without adult supervision. • Ride an ATV that’s right for your size and age. Full-size ATVs can weigh more than 800 pounds and be very difficult to handle. Start out on a smaller model that’s designed for young riders. • Always wear an approved helmet and eye protection. In many states, helmets and eye protection are required by law, particularly for teens. The best helmets for ATV use have a full


face shield and meet Department of Transportation safety standards. Many helmets have flip-down visors for eye protection. If yours doesn’t, be sure to wear shatterproof goggles and not just sunglasses. • Wear long pants, long sleeves, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots. ATVs have a high center of gravity and no safety cages, roll bars, or seatbelts. If they tip, you can fall off. Protective clothing will help prevent scrapes and cuts if you get thrown from an ATV. • Always ride at a safe speed on a trail meant for ATV use. When ATVs get going fast, they become less stable and more likely to tip. ATV tires are not meant for pavement or high speeds. Both of these factors can make turning an ATV difficult and dangerous. • Know basic first aid to treat minor injuries and be able to get help in an emergency. Be prepared in the event of an accident. Know how to get help if you or a friend are hurt. • Know and follow the ATV rules of your state. This applies even if you’re not the one steering the ATV. Many states don’t allow passengers to ride unless the ATV is designed to carry two people.

Kids & Teens |STAYING SAFE Finally, here are some absolute ATV “no’s”: • Never ride on a 3-wheel ATV. • Never ride an ATV at night. • Never ride while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. • Never ride on paved surfaces or public roads (except to cross them). • Never exceed the limit of passengers allowed by the manufacturer. • Teens should never give a passenger a ride even if they have a two-person ATV. Nothing can prevent every accident. The truth is that lots of people get hurt riding ATVs, and some are killed. If you’re going to ride an ATV, knowing how to use one safely and following every safety tip can make an accident less likely and help prevent serious injuries if an accident does happen.

inusitis is an infection of the sinuses, which are air-filled spaces in the bones of your face around the nose. Like the inside of your nose, the sinuses are lined with a thin layer of tissue called the mucous membrane that makes mucus (snot). When you have a cold or allergies, the tiny holes that drain the sinuses can get blocked and trap mucus and germs in the sinuses, which can lead to sinusitis.
