Fall in Florida

all is a busy time in Florida. It brings cooler temperatures and some of the nation’s best fall festivals. Locals and visitors alike celebrate the break from the heat and humidity of Florida summers by taking to the streets to commemorate harvests, enjoy arts and crafts shows, sip wine, taste a variety of cuisines, listen to music, and celebrate Halloween. Also, beginning in October, carnies begin migrating south to escape the harsh northern winters, bringing fairs and carnivals to the state.

Dr. June

Dear Dr. June: Some people say I’m a non-traditional student because I am going back to school in my thirties. It’s exciting for me and I’ve been enjoying it. To my surprise there are others my age in college too. I love college, but I have also fallen in love. I’ve never been married but lived with my high school sweetheart for almost 10 years. After the break up I decided to change careers too and that’s why I am finally in college. All this to say that my new love wants to get married, but I am hesitant because of being school. I also won’t live with him or anyone again without being married. I want to be a wife and mother, but I also want to be a college graduate with a better career. I have at least two more years before I graduate. How do I handle this? Choices in Florida

Dear Choices: That’s great you are making some positive changes in your life. Be proud of yourself and continue to enjoy. By the way, a lot of the more mature students are surprised to see there are a large percentage of students who are not right out of high school. Now let’s sort through your dilemma. Have a conversation with your love and explain you want to get married. Ask him how he feels about getting engaged but waiting until you graduate to actually get married. The other option is not waiting. It doesn’t mean you can’t finish your education because you’re married. Heknows you’re in college and is hopefully supportive. If he isn’t, then that’s not a good sign for the relationship anyway. Discuss scheduling, your career plans, family planning, etc. and how you both can make it work. You were surprised there were many students your age in college. Guess what! There are several married students in college as well. What’s the bottom line? Communicate your concerns. Listen to his thoughts. Recognize you don’t have to necessarily choose one at a time. It’s called life and in this life many things overlap… successfully, I might add. Why delay something good that could enhance your enjoyment in this life?

f you are searching for adventure, where you can test your courage then ‘Tree Hoppers’ in Dade City Florida is exactly the right location.

On this early Tuesday morning in September TreeHoppers , an aerial zip line adventure park opened it’s location on September 15th the selected guests and media to showcase the latest outdoor adventure in the area. Tree Hoppers will feature zip lines, rope bridges and many aerial climbing challenges. While several last minute construction projects are being finalized, the park trails and infrastructure are finished and ready for those enthusiastic climbers who enjoy climbing. Mr Benjamin Nagengast, CEO of TreeHoppers greeted guests and provided a brief overview of the park and future ambitions. ‘We are thrilled to offer this new experience to the Tampa Bay area”, he related. The team has worked hard and thoughtfully selected Tampa Bay for our newest attraction and we cannot wait to introduce TreeHoppers to the public”. 22

For All Ages! |

www.FloridaCreativeLiving.com

Mr Benjamin Nagengast, CEO of TreeHoppers

Tree Hoppers is located north of Tampa Bay about a 35 minute drive off I-75 on a 60 acre tract of land bordered by a lake and large moss covered oak trees which have become an integral portion of the park. The large trees contain platforms which have cables and other items associated with the course. At first glance one may think it was impossible to complete however there are eight separate courses which contain separate levels of accomplishment. Pick your own level you feel comfortable with. Climbers are all secured at all times by a safety cable and monitored or assisted by Tree Hopper ‘monitors’, enthusiastic and well trained assistants. You will be provided with the latest safety climbing technology and full safety instructions from these highly trainined employees before setting out on any of the courses.

Adult Living | NEWS ‘Tree Hoppers’. A new idea and new concept to Pasco County Fl. A new location where you do not need to be ‘Spiderman’ to have a great time and is almost guaranteed that a day at Tree Hoppers will result in your child sleeping well that night. For more information on times and directions you can contact Tree Hoppers at www.treehoppers.com.

As Mr. Nagengast explained while he displayed a portion of the safety equipment,”the harness is actually locked onto the cable using the same locks as they do in Switzerland. The cable cannot come unlocked so it is very safe”. The park concept was originally obtained from parks of this nature in Switzerland. Some six years ago after the idea caught on in the United States such locations were developed and now some six different locations exist in various locations within this country. With such a location coming alive in Dade City it also contributes to another outdoor attraction which fits the Florida outdoor climate and is a great idea for birthday parties and other such celebrations while being outside and enjoying the great florida weather. Following the presentation many of the guests and media were treated to the opportunity to experience the thrill of going over many of the courses. Checks of gear and double checks. Instructions on what to do and what not to do. While it took a few minutes, in the end many of the media found it was a fun way to spend the day. Spending a morning at Tree Hoppers we found the staff enthusiastic and eager to answer any and all questions. Growth of the park is anticipated with a ‘PhaseII” on the near horizon which will add to the size of the park. Casual clothing and comfortable shoes are suggested for this day of adventure. At a recent meeting of ‘Eagle Riders’ which is an equally determined group of men and women from the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge# 3752 in Zephyrhills, Florida, I watched with interest as Sally Campbell, age 13 daughter of Joe and Heather Campbell did not hesitate when she walked to the front of the room and took the microphone in front of some fifty motorcycle enthusiasts all dressed in leather attire and asked for their help in obtaining a simple pair of socks to benefit those who have cancer and use the socks to ease the results of cancer treatments .

Q&A

When and why did you start playing? When I was 15 I purchased a cheap guitar off of Ebay and started learning how to play it. Music has always been a huge part of who I am, and I love that I can take a guitar with me and be able to sing and play wherever I go. Which instruments do you play? Currently, I play the guitar. I have a keyboard at home and am beginning to play that, as well. Not only do I want to be able to offer a better variety of options to the companies/people that book me, I also want to be able to do more of the requests I have from my fans, and some of them just need keyboard accompaniment instead of a guitar. What was the first tune(s) you learned? The first song I learned on guitar that I could also sing was “When You Say Nothing At All”, redone by Alison Kraus. I learned it when I was about 15 years old, and I still play this song at a lot of my gigs/events! Is your family musical? Absolutely! Both my dad and my mom are singers/songwriters/musicians, and much of the passion I have for music has come from them. My dad has especially poured his heart and soul into his music, and has written around 500 or so songs! Tell us what it was like growing up? Hmmm. Growing up was very interesting. :) My 34 For All Ages! | www.FloridaCreativeLiving.com

family was very poor when I was young. When I was 5 years old, my mother, two sisters and I lived in a homeless shelter in Las Vegas, Nevada, called the Shade Tree. During my childhood, we (5 of us, including my dad) also lived in a school bus, and a 1956 Milk truck. Other than that, we lived with a number of different families, moving from one place to another, staying with whomever would be willing to take in our family. For us, it seemed very normal. When I was 10, we moved to the Projects in Panama City, and thought we were queens because we had our own bedrooms! :) Looking back, I wouldn’t change any of it. All of those experiences helped mold me into who I have become, and will allow me to inspire many, many children (and adults, as well) that are in poverty, or any type of situation where they might feel hopeless, and show them that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and that anything is still possible. I understand that you auditioned on “America’s Got Talent”, tell us about your experience. Yes, I auditioned for AGT twice. The first time was in Tampa a few years ago, and the second time was this past October. The audition process was very long. We stood in line for MANY hours, as I’m sure you can imagine!! This last time, I didn’t actually get to audition until almost midnight, and everyone was extremely tired and not performing their best! They were great experiences, though, seeing so many people go for their dreams!! :) It’s very inspiring to see that. Do you plan on auditioning again or try another show like “The Voice”? Yes. Definitely. In addition to AGT, I have actually auditioned for The Voice twice, as well as American Idol twice. In all, I have auditioned 6 times for these shows! I am currently in the process of submitting a video audition for American Idol. It’s their last season and I thought “Why not?”!

What are the five things you can’t live without? #1 My fiancee, Ryan. He is my biggest fan and most amazing supporter. I can’t imagine going through life without having him to pick me up when I’m feeling down, to celebrate with me as we have accomplishments, and to love and cherish me. Not to mention the fact that he is also an amazing photographer and captures the “real me” as he takes my photos!! #2 My ridiculously awesome family and friends. I am very blessed to have THE most amazing support system in the world. I have never felt so loved and believed in as I do now. The people that are constantly making their way into my life are people that are positive, caring, and believe they are going to make a difference in the world and inspire others to do the same. I am very blessed!! #3 My guitar. Need I say more? ;) #4 My “Inner Guide” planner. Seriously, you MUST get one. It can change your whole world and help you focus on having a healthy mind, body and spirit, in addition to keeping all of your appointments and helping you set goals. :) #5 My phone. I am trying to be as connected as possible with my fans, and I am constantly trying to find ways to reach more people, and having a smart phone helps me do that!! It’s tough keeping up with social media trends, but having a phone that does it all definitely helps!! What is you favorite song to belt out at the bar/in the car/for karaoke? Currently, it is a tie between Sam Hunt’s “House Party” and Walk the Moon’s “Shut Up and Dance”! They are both just so fun and upbeat, and they make me want to dance!! Do you have anything planned for this year?

36

For All Ages! |

www.FloridaCreativeLiving.com

I have many things planned for the coming year. :) I am in the beginning stages of planning my first tour, which will be from Tampa, FL to Las Vegas, NV!! There is a lot more to the story, but I will be ending the tour at the homeless shelter I mentioned earlier, “The Shade Tree”. That’s where everything started for me, and I want to inspire and motivate the children that are there now!!

Ten years from now you will be.... A billionaire. :) I believe that the Universe will give you what you expect to receive in life, and I believe that I was made to make a HUGE difference in the world. In order to make the kind of difference I was created to make, I will need lots and lots of money!! It will happen! For our readers who have never heard your music, explain your sound in 5 words: Soft, soulful, country-ish, coffee shop. If you could go open up for any artist on tour right now who would it be? Sam Hunt. If you haven’t noticed, I like this guy. :) Even though he is a country artist, he incorporates R&B, which I love! I grew up singing R&B and would love to incorporate more of that into my music. So, what’s your favorite thing to do when you aren’t writing/producing/playing etc?

Adult Living | FEATURED ARTIST great joy when I see that come true! If I was to turn on your iTunes/Pandora right now, what five artists/songs would I see on your recently played list? • Brandy (bringing back the good ‘ole days!!) • Sam Hunt (House Party is one of my favorite songs right now!!) • James Arthur (absolutely amazing to run/ workout to! Get pumped!!) • “The Power” (I totally LOVE listening to positive messages, such as “Law of Attraction” stuff. It gets me connected to the fact that I can and WILL achieve anything I decide!!) • The 1975 Chocolate (one of my FAVES!!) Do you get nervous before a performance or a competition?

Fiancee Ryan & Thanecha

Traveling with my amazing fiancee, Ryan. We took a trip to Morocco last year that changed my life! Traveling with him is like exploring a brand new world! Over the last year, I’ve realized that I am an adventurer, and he brings that out in me. Whether traveling around the US or around the world, that’s what we want to spend our free time doing! You write all of your own music; where do you draw inspiration from when you write songs and what’s your favorite part about the proccess? I draw inspiration from experiences I have had, or experiences that have been shared with me. My favorite part of the process is when I share a new song with someone, and the message in it truly resonates with them. My goal is to inspire others, and it brings me

Not always, but sometimes. I have learned over the last few years that nervousness is a good thing!! You can use that feeling and transform it into excitement and energy in your performance! :) Sometimes, it helps me to begin speaking to the crowd before I start to sing. That gets my mind off the fact that I am about to perform, and really gets me connected with the audience and what it is I want them to take from my performance. I want them to get to know who I am. When I do that, the nervousness goes away. What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous? JUST DO IT ANYWAY!! The nervousness will start to dissipate the more you do whatever it is that is making you nervous, but you can always use whatever nervousness is still there to give you energy and propel you forward!!

‘A

‘A-OK Trophy’ A Family Tradition

nd we are proud to present this award to’…

How many times have we heard those words spoken over the years. And if you live in Land O lakes Florida there is a very good chance that he award came from A-OK Trophy located at 3724 Land O Lakes Blvd in Land O Lakes which has a rich history and many memories since it all started in 1961. As you enter this business you will be amazed at the large selection of awards, ribbons, custom trophies, name badges and custom framing of awards which adorn the walls and fill the shelves.

We were greeted by Lonnie Piper whose parents started the business in 1961on Long Island New York and Bobby Buckle who obviously is her right hand and partner in this venture. It was obvious that both enjoyed the trophy business and proud that they have carried on the family tradition. As Bobby who makes many of the awards stated, “ it is like constantly t h i n k i n g outside the box. We create several

different types of awards, some in wood, some in stone, some in crystal. We even can make an award by sandblasting. There is always a way to create the award that the customer wants. If they can explain it to me, we can usually make it”.

Adult Living | COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

To prove a point, they both displayed a gas mask which was nicely attached to a wood backing with appropriate lettering.

Bobby Buckle who hails from Texas and originally a ‘bronc buster’ as he describes it was quick to admit that when he started learning the business making awards was a different occupation however one which he enjoys.

“This was somewhat different but the customer had retired from a line of emergency work and wanted this mask to remember that time in his life” Lonnie explained. “If the customer wants it, we can make it”.

“I had a good teacher and we have come so far since way back then. We have state of the art engraving equipment and make several awards in color now. That was never done before. I tell the customer come on in and look around. Tell us what you want and we can usually make it”.

She went on to explain that the trophy business of today was started in 1961 by her parents Al and Ida Silver who raided on Long Island, New York. She went on to explain that “it started in the basement and soon took up every room in the house. Finally Mom made Dad open an outside business for it but still a lot of it remained in the home. Soon we had two award business locations on Long Island and after a number of years they decided to retire and move to New Mexico. However their previous vacations in Florida instead led them to move to Land O Lakes”.

Lonnie also suggested customers come in to view the show room. “ When you see what we have to offer, what is available and what we can do we know you will be impressed.”

Displaying a wall area within the building which contained several photos and awards to her parents, all which were dedicated to her parents, she went on to explain. “Land O. Lakes Blvd was only two lanes at that time and as they widened the road the original building had to be demolished and we replaced it with the one we have today. My parents worked very hard and enjoyed the community. They made many friends and while they are now gone the business still reflects their memories to many in the community who remember them”.

A tour of the building displayed the numerous items required to make awards of all shapes and sizes. “We can take your company logo and have it attached to the trophy if you desire” Bobby explained. “We can use a photo on an award or other item. There are so many ways to make an award unique and one which the person getting the award will remember that experience.” During the tour of this business it was obvious that from stone or wood, from crystal or ribbons, any type of award which a person desires to present to an employee friend or family member, it can be created at this location. We are pleased to highlight A-OK Trophy as our small business of the quarter. A small business with truly big ideas. We recommend that you take a moment a stop by 3725 Land O Lakes Blvd in Land O Lakes Fl which is located about 1 1/2 mile north of Hwy 54 or call them at (813) 996-1186 and view the show room. You will be amazed at what you see. We were.

Being Healthy and Tips for a Healthier You!

here’s no need to enter into ‘hibernation mode’ when the weather turns cooler. Fall is the perfect time of year to begin or ramp up your fitness program, and this way, by the time the holidays hit, you won’t be easily sidelined (or fattened up) by all of the festivities.

Getting into your groove now also ensures that when the cold weather comes, you’ll be in the right place mentally and physically to continue staying active until spring. Start by setting short simple goals, such as exercising for 20 minutes as soon as you wake up on Mondays. This makes achieving them realistic and allows you to progress to longer-term goals. One day at a time. Write your goals down, include inspirational sayings. Post them on your mirror or computer screen so that you are reminded every day. Adopt the 3 “C” policy: Commitment, Convenience and Consistent. Adopting these three strategies will help you to stay active and eat right.

Make your workout fun. Mix up your workout by trying out new activities like hip-hop dancing, yoga, kickboxing and Pilates. Plan walking happy hours to enjoy the sunshine and cool fresh air with your friends. Plan and schedule your workouts for the week ahead of time, and also plan your meals so you’re not scrambling for something to eat at the last minute (which often leads to unhealthy choices). Shop using your meal plan that you create, that way you will avoid overbuying junk food. Keep your kitchen well stocked with unprocessed, whole foods that are quick and easy to munch on. Cut-up veggies, lean meats, olive oil, coconut oil and nuts are all great options. Utilize fresh vegetables of the FALL season. Partnering up with a friend who has similar fitness goals will boost your motivation and your accountability. Plus, it’s more fun to exercise with a partner. Continue to Next Page

and limes to your water for added benefits, like help with indigestion, heartburn, headaches, and preventing water weight gain. Music helps keep you motivated while you exercise, as listening to music while exercising can increase your endurance by 15 percent. Ideally, choose upbeat music; in one study when the music’s tempo slowed, the subjects’ exertion level reduced as well. And when the tempo was increased, their performance followed suit. Overdoing exercise is counterproductive and can actually damage your muscle tissue and cause injuries. Give yourself adequate recovery time between workouts and be sure to alternate muscle groups or body parts in your exercise sessions. If you’ve fallen into a workout rut, take a few days to recharge and regroup. Sometimes, taking a break from your routine can do wonders to renew your motivation. When you reach a fitness goal, reward yourself with a massage, an evening out or a new piece of clothing. After all, you worked hard; you deserve it! Don’t reward yourself with food. The greatest goals are achieved one step at a time. Keep persevering one day at a time and you will eventually reach your dreams. You have to make the decision to get fit. When you commit to it, you’re making a contract with yourself. Be the change you want to see in your life!

Get out of the gym and head out to your local park, sidewalk or forest preserve. Take in the clean fresh air and scenery while you fit in a great workout. Consider jumping jacks, pushups, squats, crunches and mountain climbers, which you can do inside your room or outside like at the park. It’s OK to indulge once in a while with your diet, just be sure to keep your goals in mind each day. If you do veer off course, don’t beat yourself up over it. Simply make better choices at your next meal or try the 80:20 rule (eating right 80 percent of the time and being more lenient for the other 20).Eat right all week and enjoy special treats on the weekend. Enjoy healthy snacks like hummus and carrots, apples and almonds, or even a piece of dark chocolate, instead of candy, chips and cupcakes. Drink water! Pure water is essential for healthy metabolism and detoxification, and for warding off dehydration. Try adding sliced cucumbers, lemons

LOSS, the

WARNING LABEL on LIFE! By Camille Sanzone

42

W

e all experience loss; it’s part of life. How we cope with loss determines the quality of our lives. In a lifetime we endure many losses: the loss of a spouse through divorce or death, the loss of a parent or sibling, the loss of a child, the loss of innocence, the loss of a job, the loss of that loving feeling, the loss of a friendship. We mourn them all. It’s understandable, but even with the death of a loved one, we can choose to focus on celebrating their life and the years we enjoyed with them, rather than dwell on the loss. With all other losses, we also have a choice. We can reframe them and see them as opportunities to grow, to make a change, to explore new things. Every ending can be a new beginning if we would but see it that way, and to see it that way, we have only to look at the possibilities. I beseech you to look. Sometimes laughter can help us cope with a loss too. A supervisor I had many years ago went on medical leave to have a double mastectomy. When she returned to work, everyone walked on eggshells, avoiding the subject. After two days of that, she called me in to her office and asked if I had any ideas how to make the staff more comfortable with the situation. I told her to have a meeting and share how she felt, and then, knowing she had a great sense of humor, I asked if she would like me to help her put a lighter spin on it. She agreed wholeheartedly. So, early the next morning, everyone met in her office, and she told us she appreciated our concern, but that she wanted things to go back to normal, for us to treat her as we always had, not as fragile or less than. It was a heartfelt little speech, after which she gave out a sigh, which I followed immediately with, “I bet you feel better now that you’ve gotten that off your chest!” She looked at me, grateful for the comic relief, and, in an instant, began to howl with laughter, which cracked everyone up and they laughed along with her.

As we get older we may lose our ability to do certain things, or, at least, to do them as well or as often. SEX, for instance. There, I’ve said it. Yes, there is sex after 50, and 60,and so on. We might not be able to do the gymnastics, but we can still go to the gym. Let’s focus on what we can do, and creatively explore new options for pleasure. The possibilities are endless, my friends. Remember what Auntie Mame said in the movie of the same name, starring Rosalind Russell, (if you haven’t seen it, rent it!): “Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death!” Well, this Sicilian is here to tell you, Mangia! Mangia!

Sudoku

A sudoku puzzle is a logic puzzle which is solved using logic and reasoning. Though the number of squares in the grid may vary, a standard Sudoku puzzle is a 9x9 grid divided into nine 3x3 blocks in which some of the numbers are given. The object of the puzzle is to fill in the rest of the grid using only the numbers 1 through 9 so that no number repeats in any block, row or column. The difficulty is determined by how many and which numbers are given and where they are placed in the grid and can range from very easy to extremely challenging. Though sudoku puzzles generally use numbers as symbols, no mathematical skills are required to solve the puzzle. View our next issue for the correct answers to this Sudoku puzzle.

THE MEDAL Paying Tribute to our Military

Unveiling of the Purple Heart Monument in Zephyrhills

T

he sky turned cloudy as the large crowd gathered at Zephyr Lake Park located on Purple Heart Highway on August 7th 2015 in the small city of Zephyrhills Florida to pay their respects and honor those who have received the Purple Heart medal, which holds the distinction of being the oldest military award still in existence.

It seemed appropriate as August 7th was National Purple Heart Day for the nation. While it was humid, that did not deter a large gathering of former military veterans, their families and several military organizations who all gathered for this important occasion. At exactly 11:00 a.m. Mr. Richard Hunt former United States Marine and Past Commander of the Purple Heart Florida stepped to the microphone in what is known as ‘Zepher Park’ to welcome all to the dedication of the unveiling of the Purple Heart Monument which will honor all those from every branch of military service who have received the medal for being wounded or fatally injured while serving our country. September - November 2015

Like most military ceremonies, the National Anthem was performed by Ms. Lorraine Paul, the Zephyrhills High School ROTC Color Guard presented the colors in excellent fashion and remarks were made by Mayor Gene Whitfield, City Manager Steve Spina and finalized with comments and a heartfelt thanks to all veterans by Florida Representative Danny Burgess. As the comments were spoken a quiet group of motorcycle riders each holding American flags who represented the Florida Patriot Riders quietly listened. One rider came from as far as Orlando to attend the ceremony. A short distance away a family stood nearby holding a large framed photograph of a family member who had reportedly received two of the medals. The Purple Heart is an award that is not easily obtained. Simply stated, it is a military decoration which is awarded in CONTINUE TO NEXT PAGE | For All Ages! 51

With it’s forerunner, the Badge of Military Merit which took the form of a heart made of purple cloth, the Purple Heart as previously stated is the oldest military award given to members of the U. S. military . The original Purple Heart designated as the ‘Badge of Military Merit’ was established by George Washington who at that time was Commander of the Continental Army. While only three of his soldiers received the medal, it was never abolished and never proposed again until after World War I. General Douglas Mac Arthur in 1931 in quiet fashion started to redesign the medal and many fail to realize that we can thank Ms. Elizabeth Will, a Army heraldic specialist in the Quartermaster Corp who created the image of the medal which as the image of George Washington on it and remains so today. Chartered by Congress in 1958, The Military Order of the Purple Heart is composed of men and women who received the medal for wounds suffered in combat. Although the membership is restricted to the combat wounded they support all veterans and their families with a myriad of nation-wide programs. As the ceremony came to a close, the Mayor of Zephyrhills was presented with a flag representing the organization and which will fly near the memorial to remind everyone that views the memorial- that freedom is never free. A rifle salute was completed, taps was played by a veteran a short distance away and the ceremony came to an end. Quietly observed standing by a tree taking in the ceremony, Clyde Bracknell of Zephyrhills was 52 For All Ages! | www.FloridaCreativeLiving.com

asked why convinced him to attend the ceremony. Bracknell, a former Army veteran stated “it is the least we can do for our veterans who have done so much for the country”. I agree. And that evening the national news reported the finding of a lost Purple Heart medal found in a dump in St Paul, Minn. The family of Wiljo Matalamaki had clung to the medal , a tribute to the young man, an aviator sent to World War II, who never returned and whose body was never recovered and presumed dead. Then the medal was lost and for decades the family wondered where it was located. Then years later in a dump some five miles from where he had resided the medal was discovered among discarded clothing still in a weathered medal case in Wawina, Minnesota. The medal was returned to the family members of Matalamaki in a ceremony at Fort Snelling in St Paul Mn. where the medal will be retained with the memories of that airman by the family. Seems ironic to learn of such a recovery on the day the medal is recognized across our nation. Then the clouds opened, the rains came, the crowds dispersed and traveled a short distance to AMVETS Post 550 for food and fellowship. The memorial remains in ‘Zeph Park’, the flag will fly soon in the park and many will travel the ‘Purple Heart Highway’ which runs adjacent to it. And while it may be painful to recall the images of close friends or family members who received the medal and are no longer with us and remember the saying that “ A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger then oneself “. Also let us give our thanks to the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and all the Military organizations in the area along with local business as well who made this a reality and to keep the memory alive of those who have been awarded the Purple Heart.

Adult Living | CHEF’S DELIGHT

4 Stars One-Pot

Zucchini Black Beans and Rice

Ingredients

1 Tbsp olive oil 1/2 an onion, diced 2 cloves of garlic, diced 1 medium zucchini, quartered and sliced 1/2 green bell pepper, diced

Directions

1 can black beans, drained and rinsed 4-5 medium tomatoes, diced 1 tsp cumin 1 tsp oregano 1/2 tsp chili powder 1-1/4 cups vegetable broth or stock 1 cup instant brown rice shredded colby jack cheese (optional)

1. Start by heating the oil in a large pan or skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and garlic and cook them for a minute or so, just until they start to get really delicious smelling. Then add the zucchini and bell peppers, salt and pepper everything, and cook the veggies together for about 5 minutes. 2. Next, add the beans, tomatoes, vegetable stock, and the spices to the pot. Stir to incorporate the spices. Increase the heat and bring the pot to a boil. 3. Now, this next part largely depends on what kind of rice you use. I used Minute brown rice, so here’s what I did. I stirred the rice into the boiling pot, then turned the heat down to low and put the cover on the pot, and let it simmer that way for about 5 minutes. Then I turned the heat off (but left the lid on the pot,) and waited for the rice to finish and all the liquid to absorb. It ended up taking about 10 minutes. 4. Finally, sprinkle a bit of colby jack cheese over the top of the dish, serve warm, and enjoy only having to wash one pot after dinner’s over! 54 For All Ages! | www.FloridaCreativeLiving.com

What are Glands? Reviewed by: Steven Dowshen, MD

“A

re your glands swollen?” “She has a gland problem.”

When people talk about glands, what do they mean? The answer is many different things. Glands are important organs, you have a variety of them all over your body, and though many of them are small, each produces something important. Some glands make something that is released from the body — like saliva, sweat, or tears. And if you’re a girl, the mammary glands in your breasts could someday make breast milk to feed a baby. Other glands release hormones (say: hor-mones), September - November 2015

which are substances inside your body that tell it how to work and how to grow. Glands that do this are part of the endocrine (say: en-doh-krin) system. Puberty — body changes that turn a kid into an adult — depend on the endocrine system. Still other things that we call “glands” are part of your immune (say: ih-myoon) system. They release substances that help you fight off illnesses and, if you are sick, help you get better. When you have a bad cold and your neck glands are swollen, that is your immune system in action. ©1995-2015. The Nemours Foundation/KidsHealth®. Reprinted with permission

When Tests Make You Reviewed by: D’Arcy Lyness, PhD

oday’s the day of a big test at school, and you feel awful. Your stomach hurts and you have a headache. Maybe your muscles feel tense and you feel shaky or sweaty. You know you haven’t been bitten by the flu bug — but you may have a case of the jitters, also known as test anxiety.

Here’s how test anxiety works. Let’s say you’re worried about your math test because you didn’t do so well on the last one. Or maybe you’re kind of tense because you did great on the last one and you’re the kind of kid who likes to get all As. When you’re feeling worried and tense, your whole body can be affected. Performance Anxiety Test anxiety is actually a type of performance anxiety. Performance anxiety is when a person feels worried about how they will perform (do on something), especially when it’s really important. For instance, you might feel performance anxiety when you’re trying out for the school band or for the basketball team. When you’re taking a test, you might feel “butterflies,” a stomachache, or a tension headache. Some people might feel shaky, sweaty, or feel their heart

beating quickly as they wait for the test to be given out. A student with really strong test anxiety may even feel like he or she might pass out or throw up. Sound familiar? You’re not alone. Ask other people and you’ll find that just about all people — adults and other kids — feel some anxiety before a test. In fact, a small dose of anxiety can be helpful, keeping you sharp and focused. But when your symptoms take over so that you can’t function or when you’re so anxious that you feel sick, you might not be able to do your best. Of course, if you didn’t study for the test, you might be worried — and for good reason. That kind of anxiety isn’t as easy to tackle because even if you find a way to calm down, you still might not know what the right answers are. When you are prepared for a test and you get a handle on your anxiety, you’ll be able to let your knowledge shine and score a good grade. No More Tests? If teachers know that students get stressed out about tests, why do they still give them? Believe it or not, both teachers and students

benefit from tests. Tests measure how well students are learning the skills and information their teachers have been teaching them. And tests of all different sorts are a part of life — from the driving test you’ll take one day to the test you’ll take if you decide you want to be a doctor. What Makes Anxiety Happen? Well, because we can’t outlaw tests, we might as well figure out how to ease test anxiety. Anxiety is a feeling a person gets when he or she expects something stressful to happen. When you’re under stress, your body releases the hormone adrenaline, which prepares it for danger, like when you’re running away from your older brother! Adrenaline causes the physical symptoms, such as sweating, a pounding heart, and rapid breathing. These symptoms can be mild or intense. Focusing on the bad things that could happen can make a kid feel more worried. A kid might think, “What if I forget everything I know?” or “What if the test is too hard?” Too many thoughts like these don’t leave much room in your mind to concentrate on remembering the answers to the test questions. People with test anxiety can also feel stressed out by the physical reaction and think things like “What if I throw up?” or “Oh no, my hands are shaking.” These thoughts can get the person even more upset, making the anxiety even stronger. Now, the person feels worse and is even more distracted and unable to concentrate. Who Gets Test Anxiety? Anyone can get test anxiety, but someone who really wants to get every answer right might be more prone to feeling this way. This is called being a perfectionist (say: per-fek-shuh-nist). Kids who worry a lot also might feel anxious at test time. Perfectionists and worriers find it hard to accept mistakes they make or to get less than a perfect score. This creates more pressure for them.

Be prepared. Pay attention in class. Do your homework. Study for the test. On test day, you’re more likely to feel like you know the material. Expect the best. Once you have prepared, think positively. Say to yourself, “I studied and I’m ready to do my best.” Block bad thoughts. Watch out for any negative messages you might be sending yourself about the test (“I’m no good at taking tests” or “I’m going to freak out if I get a bad grade”). These thoughts can make anxiety worse and make it harder for you to do well on the test. Accept mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes. Be more forgiving of your own mistakes, especially if you prepared for the test and are set to do your best. Take care of yourself. You’ll feel your best if you get enough playtime, sleep, and nutritious food. This is important all the time, but be extra-sure you get all three the day before a test. Breathe better. OK, so you already know how to breathe. But did you know that breathing exercises can help calm you down? (Just try not to take in too much air because it might make you feel dizzy.) Here’s how to do it: Inhale (breathe in) slowly and deeply through your nose, and then exhale (breathe out) slowly through your mouth. Do this two to four times and you just might breathe easier the next time you’re taking a test!

As we mentioned before, not being prepared for a test (duh!) can cause test anxiety. Kids who don’t get enough sleep also can be more prone to test anxiety. What Can You Do? You might be reading this article and saying, “Hey, that sounds just like me!” If so, we’re glad you recognize that this happens to you. Now you can start taking steps to lessen your test anxiety. Here are some ways to do that: Ask for help. Talk to your mom or dad, your teacher, or your school guidance counselor. Just talking to someone about test anxiety can make you feel better. Describe what happens to you when you’re taking a test and these people can help you figure out some solutions. For instance, learning study skills can boost your test-day confidence. y mom says if you stay up all night and don’t get any rest you can stunt your growth. Is this true? - Damien It could be. A single night of no sleep will not stunt growth. But over the long term, a person’s growth may be affected by not getting the full amount of sleep. That’s because growth hormone is normally released during sleep. If someone consistently gets too little sleep (known as “sleep deprivation”), growth hormone is suppressed.

Lack of sleep also can affect other hormones. Studies show that sleep deprivation is linked to obesity and diabetes. Experts are looking into whether this link has to do with hormonal changes. So in this case your mom may be right. Getting enough sleep also will help you focus better in school and give you more energy and better concentration for sports and other activities.
