Green Hopper Powers Down FORT LAUDERDALE - Part of the charm and uniqueness of Wilton Drive has packed up and moved to Sarasota, Florida. The Green Hopper, which has been a fixture on Wilton Drive for the last two years, has officially closed their doors, sold, packed up and hopped over to the west coast. Since its beginning in February 2009, the Green Hopper would regularly be seen at Earth Days, the city’s canoe races, AIDS fundraisers, pride parades and festivals, and many other events. During many large-scale events on Wilton Drive, the Green Hopper donated their services, supplying a shuttle service between outlying parking facilities and The Drive. They were credited with helping to ease some of the parking congestion along Wilton Drive. The Green Hopper was created by Alan Carter who purchased four, six passenger GEM electric vehicles manufactured by Chrysler at a cost of $22,000 each. “I’m so very happy to have had the experience of doing it,” said Carter. “I wouldn’t have missed if for anything. I may have lost a little money but I gained so much more.” The large concrete frog and 1950's glider-bench has been donated to the Wilton Manors Historical Society and will be placed in one of the city’s public parks. Rob Kohl, New Victims Come Forward FORT LAUDERDALE - Agenda reported last week Robert Kohl had been arrested on charges of fraud. In a new development Jean Doherty of Le Patio restaurant has come forwards as a result of the article. In November last year, Kohl and a friend went to the Le Patio Restaurant off Wilton Drive and claimed they wanted to film a free documentary about diversity. Weeks later, some customers came to Le Patio for dinner, they presented Jean with a 50% off voucher they had bought from a website called www.brickstreetdeals.com. Hollywood A-Listers for Gay Marriage Continued from COVER

The New York-based group Freedom to Marry said Monday that R&B singer Mya and Twitter founder Jack Dorsey also signed an open letter calling on the president to back gay marriage. Obama has said he supports civil unions as an alternative to marriage for gays and lesbians, and his views on the subject are evolving. Freedom to Marry says several couples plan to deliver the letter to the White House in the spring. Just weeks after the Obama administration announced it would no longer legally defend the Defense of Marriage act, some of the president's biggest Hollywood supporters came forward urging him to go a step further and legalize same-sex marriage. Citing Obama's decision on DOMA last month, the letter calls for Obama to exhibit similar leadership on same-sex marriage rights. "We ask you to complete your journey and join us, and the majority of Americans, who support the freedom to marry." The letter was also signed by NFL linebackers Scott Fujita of the Cleveland Browns and Brenden Ayanbadejo of the Baltimore Ravens; entertainment mogul Bob Wright; former NAACP chairman Julian Bond; and Facebook co-founders Chris Hughes and Sean Parker. Hughes, who is openly gay,

previously worked for Obama's campaign in 2008, heading up its enormously successful new-media efforts. The letter comes as Obama prepares to launch his 2012 re-election campaign, in which he will no doubt count on entertainment types as an important source of financial and public support. But the president's relationship with Hollywood has noticeably cooled since 2008, as celebrities have openly expressed their discontent with Obama in part because of his position on samesex marriage. Just last month, Matt Damon railed on Obama in an interview with CNN, bluntly saying he has not done a good job as president. Meanwhile, Lynch, the openly gay star of "Glee," called Obama a "huge disappointment" for his handling of gay rights. Obama has long said that he supports civil unions as an alternative to marriage for gays and lesbians—putting him to the right of former Vice President Dick Cheney, who has endorsed same-sex marriage. Many gay rights supporters view that position as an opening—though it's unclear how far Obama will be willing to go ahead of what could be a tough reelection campaign. To date, the letter has received over 28,000 electronic signatures.H

Gay Families Becoming More Popular Continued from COVER

as damaging to the social fabric (labeled as “rejecters”), and another third are mixed, or approve of certain arrangements (labeled as “skeptics”). As acceptance of families with samesex parents has grown, the poll found the opposite to be true for single mothers. An executive with the Pew Research Center said that this is the area where acceptors and skeptics differed the most. If you took out the question about the single mothers, there would only be two groups, acceptors and rejecters. The poll also indicated that while 98% of acceptors did not see anything wrong with women raising children by themselves, 99% of the skeptics and 98% of the rejecters consider it bad for society. Through the years, however, public sentiment does not seem to have changed much regarding single mothers indicating that a single parent household, with just one mother, was the least desirable. According to a study conducted by the University of Miami, students raised by a single mother do not do as well as their peers who grew up with two parents. That survey only asked about single mothers, not single parents. Gay and lesbian parents, however, are still providing a two-parent family that is why they are perceived more positively. A psychology professor at the University of Virginia, had similar thoughts saying that there’s no doubt there’s been a shift in attitudes towards

gays and lesbians as there has been a shift in attitude toward gay marriage. Fifteen years ago, a Gallup Poll found that 68% of Americans said same-sex marriage should not be legally recognized while 27% said it should be. A recent Gallop indicates the split is 50/50. Last October, the PEW Research Center conducted a poll with 6,000 adults interviewed on the subject and the results were that 42% of adults favor same-sex marriage, whereas 48% of adults are opposed to this type of union. So while the majority of Americans are still against gay marriage, these numbers show an increase in acceptance. In 2009, polls showed that only 37% of Americans supported gay marriage and that 54% of Americans were opposed. Even though it's been decades since then Vice-President Dan Quayle famously lambasted the fictional TV character, and single mother, Murphy Brown, public sentiment may not have changed significantly. Just two weeks ago, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee called out pregnant Oscar winner Natalie Portman as glamorizing “the idea of out-of-wedlock children.” One reason believed for the overall wider acceptance of gay and lesbian families are television shows like “Modern Family” and movies such as The Kids are Alright. Also regular stories on television news programs has helped bring gay families into the forefront.H

Megachurch presents choir with anti-gay contract CALIFORNIA - Orange County's Crystal Cathedral has come under fire as several members of the choir speak out over their upset regarding a document they've been asked to sign that takes a strong stand against homosexuality. The "Crystal Cathedral Worship Choir and Worship Team Covenant" recently handed out to members states that they should commit to being Christians by following the Bible in every way, the Orange County Register reported Tuesday. Former and current choir members said they were particularly offended by a statement in the document that refers to homosexuality. Long-time church members say this is the first time they have seen the cathedral take a firm stand against homosexuality and are disturbed by it. "I understand that in an era where images of family relationship and personal sexuality are often confused, Crystal Cathedral Ministries believes that it is important to teach and model the biblical view," the covenant reads. "I understand that Crystal Cathedral Ministries teaches that sexual intimacy is intended by God to only be within the bonds of marriage, between one man and one woman." Sheila Schuller Coleman, daughter of the founder and senior pastor of the

news megachurch, issued a statement saying the document is intended to "clarify expectations placed on them as ministry leaders." Coleman also apologized for the pain the covenant has caused some choir members. Ann Moore Waltz, a long time church member and former choir member, said she does not agree with the statement in the covenant. "If I were still in the choir and if that was presented to me, and if a gay person had walked out, I would have walked out with him or her," she told the Register. Don Neuen, the cathedral's long time choir director, left the church last year because he disagreed with Gretchen Schuller Penner's view that choir members should be "vetted" to make sure they are good Christians, the Register reported. John Charles, a spokesman for the cathedral, was quick to say that the covenant does not mean gays are banned from the choir. "This contract is to educate choir members about what our church believes in," he said. The Megachurch has been plagued by a series of controversial issues, including a bitter family rift that prompted the founder's son, Robert A. Schuller, to split from the church. In addition there have been questions regarding and salaries and housing allowances for Schuller family members. Crystal Cathedral Ministries filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Oct. 18, citing

debts of more than $43 million. The church has ordered major layoffs, sold property and cancelled its annual "Glory of Easter" extravaganza.H

Straight Teenager killed in Anti -Gay Attack NEW YORK -A New York teenager was beaten to death at a birthday party in Queens by party crashers shouting anti-gay slurs, witnesses said. Anthony Collao, 18, died Monday at Jamaica Hospital, the New York Daily News reported. Friends said it was not clear why Collao, a recent high school graduate, was targeted in the Saturday night attack. He had a girlfriend and was not gay, friends said, although the party was put on by two openly gay men. Police said four suspects were arrested shortly after the attack and identified as Alex Velez, 16, of the Bronx borough, and Nolis Ogando, Christopher Lozada and Luis Tabales, all 17, from the Queens borough. Lozada was wearing Collao's baseball cap and the others were covered in blood when arrested, sources said. They suspects came uninvited to the party, advertised on Facebook, and refused to pay a $7 cover charge, witnesses said. They reportedly stormed the home, breaking windows and picking fights. They flashed gang signs and yelled anti-gay slurs, the two party hosts said. Collao, sensing trouble, left with a friend but was chased by the suspects, and kicked and punched, the Daily News reported.H

Is communication killing communication? There is no question communication has improved our lives. I am typing this from the W hotel on wifi provided by my cell phone. However have we overkilled? Do we rely on communication tools to avoid face to face communication? Would we rather tweet or post than actually have a real life conversation? Think about it, last time you were in an awkward situation or were slightly bored on a date or in a bar did you not reach immediately for your phone? What did you do? Tweet? Facebook? Update a profile, check your messages on a dating site, send a Whatsapp or a BBM? The options are endless. We have no need to talk in person. We have no need to think about pages of words, just one sentence will do. Even email communication has been honed to one line. Sure its more efficient but it can lead to misunderstanding and in my opinion shows a lack of commitment to engaging in a conversation. The negative side of this is that more and more people in the community are relying so heavily on communication. The other night I was in a bar with a friend who pointed out to me that the guy next to him was on Grindr checking guys out in the bar. He proceeded to message a guy who was 2ft away. The guy looked up and we watched them exchange messages from across the bar. At no point did either of them see the ridiculousness of this exchange, or the fact that due to communication they had forgotten how to exchange a conversation with each other! One would think that due to so many dating sites like craigslist, adam4adam, manhunt and the like would serve to bring the community together, it does the opposite. If those who stay home and hook up online for all manner of things are the only ones then fine. You could then be sure the person you talk to in the bar is out to converse, to meet and to get and to get involved out of the cyber universe. However, thanks to apps on our cell phones that is not the case. You can have the best of both worlds but at what cost? Well if like the guys in the bar, you realise you can’t be as confident or as strong as you are online, there is a huge self-confidence issue to be addressed.

Surely above it all, an intelligent and engaging conversation with eye contact and a smile is going to serve you better than 3 lines of a typed a la carte menu of what you want to do. Of course a hook up is one thing,

Alex Vaughn many argue that that is easier to arrange online, however if you want a date, don’t rely on technology to get one, or worse to hide from the fear of actually going up to someone in a bar and saying hi. I once had a friend go through a really messy break up, and he would go to the bars and try and forget the ex, but the ex was a bit of a master of communication and would burn up his phone with text messages and Facebook attacks. He perpetuated the issue by firing back a reply to every message. Tone and feeling don’t come through on a text, all you get is words. Those words tend to be as hurtful as possible. Why? Simply because it is so much easier to be cruel and unkind when you don’t have to see the damage you cause. In addition with new phones that you can type so easily on, you can rapid fire insults without a second thought. As we are so reliant on communication we rush through a message and

form our own opinion. Picking and choosing which words to get irate about. In the case of my friend he was wasting so much time and heartache attached to his Blackberry that I told him to leave his phone in the car, he did and it changed his life. He enjoyed the bars again, he spoke with people, because he didn’t have the scorpion laden web of his exe’s messages to distract him from speaking with people in person. It doesn’t stop there, emails are so easy to fire off and you don’t have to take the time to think about what you are saying, like you did when writing a letter. The recent spat between the Mayor Jack Seiler and Pridefest organiser Marc Hansen shows how easy it is to email first think second. In addition one is much more cutting in text and email then you would dare to be face to face. In preparation for this piece I went out on Saturday night and left both my phones in the car. I won’t lie to you it was near on torture, every time I saw something funny I wanted to message one of my friends around the world, on one manner or other of the wealth of communication tools I have on my phone. I couldn’t. I wanted to take pictures, again not an option. What was I to do? I had no choice but to talk to people who were there. So I did. I can tell you now, it was truly liberating. I got to network, to laugh and to really understand people that I spoke to because I wasn’t constantly distracted with my phone buzzing in my pocket. So what to do to get out of the communication trap? Give my little social experiment a go, leave your phone in your car when you go out to meet people or turn it on silent. The first time will be horrendous I promise, but after that, you will see you have to go the extra mile to engage someone and that is worth it. Communication is the key to any relationship, face to face, eye to eye, no matter what you say… a text can’t beat that!H

Letters to the editor DEAR EDITOR, I attended PrideFest Saturday, March 12, 2011 and there was a lady comedian on stage with an excessively loud microphone. She was telling what she called jokes, but they seemed slightly vulgar and possibly inappropriate, especially considering the time of day, and the atmosphere in terms of the audience. There were also children in the audience. Also, as you know, there were police, fire officials, and other safety personnel present. It

didn't exactly express us gays in a positive light. I have nothing against this lady comedian, but I wanted to bring it to your attention, and the attention of those present that I was embarrassed by it. Sincerely,

“Papa, Can You Hear Me?” by JESSICA OSMAN

You’ve probably heard by now that Barbara Bush recently came out in support of gay marriage. She has joined other Republican heavy hitters’ daughters such as Mary Cheney and Meghan McCain. In addition, Cindy McCain has posed for the NoH8 campaign in support of gay marriage and even Laura Bush has said that gay marriage will come and that she’s “OK with that”. These women are certainly doing their part to break stereotypes that all Republicans or Conservatives think the same and that there is room for differing ideas within a party. These ladies are just a few in a large group of center-right people that are calling for our leaders to stand down on this issue. Gay Americans and their allies are not asking for special treatment, they are asking – nay, demanding - the same treatment as other Americans. Let us not forget that until the 1960’s interracial marriage was ille-

gal and today most people wouldn’t give it a second thought. This is just another time in our history where we have to fight to break down barriers and open people’s eyes to the fact that they are denying basic freedoms and saying that one group is more superior and deserving than another. Domestic partnership laws and civil unions only recognized in certain states are not equality, they are just the same oppressions, but with a pretty bow on it. It’s not “separate but equal”. If we want our leaders to change, we have to work on the ground to get others on to understand and fight with us. One of the large dividing factors is the serious religious ties to the idea of marriage. Why do the people that use this as a reason not have a problem with atheists, agnostics, “spiritual” people, etc. getting married? Also, so often people cry out about “separation of church and state” when they feel religion is getting involved in government, but why not cry out the same when the govern-

ment is so clearly involved in a religious institution? If I were in a position of legislative power here’s what I would propose: First, rename the legal binding/recognition of a couple. Any consenting adult couple should be allowed to be legally bound and receive the benefits and recognition that go along with that. Instead of the state issuing a “marriage license” they would issue a “civil union license” or whatever we decide to call it. This would put everyone, regardless of religion or sexual orientation, on the same playing field and be afforded the same rights under the law, with insurance companies, etc. People have such strong feelings about the definition of the word marriage, so just take it out of the equation. Second, if a couple wants a religious “marriage” ceremony they can still have it - we just leave it up to the individual places of worship to decide what type of services they will provide. As a Christian and a Republican, I

proudly support gay marriage and believe more people need to publically take a stand like the Bush and McCain women and so many others. Marriage for all is coming and we are going to need people from both sides of the aisle to work together and find the middle ground.H

Safe Schools Improvement Act in U.S. Senate WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senators Bob Casey (D-PA) and Mark Kirk (R-IL) and 17 total cosponsors introduced a Senate bill with bipartisan support that specifically addresses bullying and harassment due to actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. The Safe Schools Improvement Act would require schools to implement comprehensive anti-bullying policies that address bullying and harassment and ensure the safety and well-being of all their students. In the last Congress, the Senate and House versions finished the Congress with, respectively, 17 and 131 bipartisan cosponsors. A bipartisan House bill is also expected to be introduced in the coming weeks by Rep. Linda Sanchez. “Anti-LGBT harassment hurts the children of both Democrats and Republicans, as do all of the forms of bullying and harassment addressed by this important bill,” said Eliza Byard, Executive Director of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network. “Senators Casey and Kirk show we all share a common vision of schools that keep students safe and focused on learning.” No federal law or policy exists that requires schools to adopt policies to address bullying, and existing state laws vary greatly in their breadth and effectiveness.H

West Virginia Passes AntiPicketing Law CHARLESTON, WV – Despite a Supreme Court ruling declaring freedom of speech, West Virginia lawmakers have passed legislation that would establish criminal penalties for people protesting at funerals. An 8 to 1 Supreme Court ruling last week declared that Reverend Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas were exercising their first admendment rights by picketing at funeral of dead soldiers who returned from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Last year the same group picketed at the funerals of 29 coal miners where were killed in last spring’s Upper Big Branch mine disaster. If signed by the governor, picketing at funerals could become a misdemeanor.H

there and the secretary gave her a number to call. The man she spoke with was Chris Caputo, another victim of Kohls. He apologized profusely and promised to go the restaurant that evening at 5pm. He arrived with Kohl in tow. He explained there had been a misunderstanding, and Kohl produced what he claimed to be a contract, signed by Jean’s partner of 24 years. When she examined it she could see it was clearly not Vero’s signature. Both men insisted Vero had signed the contract. Vero speaks little English and Doherty is sure they took advantage of that fact. She told them that she was going to go to the police. At this point Kohl produced an envelope, explaining he had a check for her. She explained pointedly that what they had done was fraudulent and that she didn’t want any part of it and showed them the door. Jean did go to WM Police department but did not report the crime. Mr Caputo reached out to Miss Doherty via Facebook to apologise for the incident and to inform her of the fact Kohl had stolen checks from him. The police are very interested in getting any more information they can on victims of Rob Kohl. Please contact the police department of the city the crime occurred. H

Lady Gaga Raises $250K For Japan CALIFORNIA - Lady Gaga says she has raised $250,000 in just 48 hours for victims of Japan’s hurricane and tsunami. Vanity Fair has apologized after a gay writer used the word ‘fags’ in an article about Glee NEW YORK - Brett Berk, a columnist for the magazine, wrote an article about a recent episode on the Vanity Fair website. He wrote: “Nice singing. But how can having girls in the audience make these cartwheeling, foam-party fags straightsexy?” Berk was immediately criticized across the board for the comment, with gay rights groups, bloggers and commentators weighing in. On Tuesday he issued an apology,

saying “I would like to apologize sincerely to anyone I offended.” He continued “As an openly gay writer writing in an overtly overblown style, my intent in using the word in this offhanded way was to continue my consistent efforts to confront and challenge stereotype.” He went on to say “Anyone with even a whiff of familiarity with my writing will know that I am, and have long been, a tireless agitator, here at VF.com and elsewhere, for gay rights, as well as a huge supporter of everything Glee has accomplished in advancing a meaningful dialogue about homosexuality in our popular culture – and in our youth culture in particular.” Vanity Fair said: “With so many genuine homophobes stirring up trouble these days, the gay community doesn’t need any [agitation] from an ally like Vanityfair.com, so we are eager to set the record straight about the use of the word ‘f**s’ in Brett Berk’s latest ‘Gay Guide to Glee’ column. “Brett, who has repeatedly referred to himself as VF.com’s ‘fun and f**gy editor’ (a title the editors have declined to endorse), writes from a humorous and explicitly gay perspective, and his invocation of this complicated word was meant to critique the notion that the gay characters of Glee should feel obliged to ‘play straight’ on stage.” They went on to say, “That said, we recognise that the column caused genuine offence to many readers, and we apologise unreservedly to them.”H

HRC Poll: Voters Oppose Republican Defense of DOMA WASHINGTON, D.C. - American voters oppose the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the law that forbids the federal government from recognizing legally married same-sex couples, as well as efforts by the House Republican leadership to intervene in court cases defending the law, according to new polling released today by the Human Rights Campaign in partnership with Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research. This poll is the first in a series of quarterly surveys from HRC and GQRR that will analyze public opinion on critical lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues. Overall, voters say they oppose the Defense of Marriage Act – 51% oppose the law and 34% favor it. Independent voters, who were instrumental in the Republican House takeover, oppose this law by a 52% to 34% margin. Additionally when read statements for and against defending the law in court, 54% of voters oppose the House Republicans’ intervention, while only 32% support it. H

Fallen Angel By ALEX VAUGHN The Caldwell Theatre company continues it’s trend of ‘first in the region to produce’ with the launch of the Pulitzer Prize nominated and Tony Nominated smash, Next Fall, by Geoffrey Nauffts. A play that wrestles with religion, family dynamics and honesty to oneself. The play is about a cross generational gay couples’ struggle, not so much with age difference but their totally opposite religious beliefs. Luke, the younger is a gay Christian and Adam, the older, a devout Atheist! Next Fall presents not just the above but a range of issues facing many gay couples who are so far apart in age. The play opens with a tragic accident that pulls together those who are closest to the couple. Adam’s self- help loving candle shop owning friend Holly, Luke’s parents Arlene and Butch and Luke’s Christian friend Brandon. Arlene (Pat Nesbit) steals the opening scene, her southern drawl and comments are incredibly comical and serve to take you right out of the tragedy and into a sitcom. Immediately you get the sense of the fact the friends are hiding Luke’s sexuality from his mother. This serves for both comic and tragic exchanges that leave you as uncomfortable as the characters. This resonates throughout the play. Slick dialogue and

witty one liners keep the play light whilst dealing with sensitive subjects such as age gaps, coming out and of course religion. The entrance of Luke’s father Butch (Dennis Bateman) is fantastic. He is a hard-nosed southern man who believes in the bible without question. He manages to ignore all the obvious signs his son is gay throughout the play. Close shaves throughout keep you glued to your seat. During the production you are taken through various events in Adam and Luke’s five year relationship, each scene has a great balance between the underlying theme of an age difference and the main theme of their contrasting religious beliefs. Holly (Irene Adjan) does feature, first as Adam’s employer than as his friend and confidant. She represents a typical New York ‘Fag Hag’ and does it with similar timing and biting sarcasm as Grace on Will and Grace. Brandon (Christopher A. Kent), is underused. He is almost surplus to requirements. It isn’t until very near then end in a heartfelt monologue he explains that though he is a devout Christian, he loves to sleep

with black men. That is where it stops, falling in love as Adam and Luke have is totally unacceptable in his eyes. Kent really makes his one major monologue resonate with the audience. One of the most impressive parts of Next Fall is the sensitive portrayal of one of the most insidious by products of discriminatory relationship laws. One partner is not considered family and is therefore not allowed to visit with the other who is in a coma. One particular scene that stands out is when Butch arrives at Luke and Adam’s apartment, while Luke is out. An altercation between him and Adam is suitably cringe worthy yet, the love Adam (Tom Wahl) has for Luke (Josh Canfield) prevents him from overstepping the line.

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

When Luke returns home the fear is evident and after a massive faux pas he decided to sit his father down to tell him. Butch evidently has realizes yet cuts his son off before he can tell him. The scene is extremely poignant and Canfield delivers a mature performance. The cracks begin to show, and both the lead actors play perfectly the issues that truly affect and older and younger men who come from two different backgrounds and belief systems. The issues at stake for this play don’t distract from some very amusing banter. The issues are addressed however perhaps too lightly. The questions left open by the play aren’t answered which is excellent because you leave re-evaluating your beliefs and experiences. Next Fall is definitely a play to be seen, if you have ever experienced differences with age or the importance of coming out, it’s amazing to see it on stage handled without judgement.H The Caldwell Theatre Company 7901 N.Federal Highway, Boca Raton, FL 33487 | 561 241 7432 Runs till March 27 2011

Irish Coffee

Caife Gaelach (in Irish) is a cocktail consisting of hot coffee, Irish whiskey, and sugar, stirred, and topped with thick cream. The coffee is drunk through the cream. The original recipe explicitly uses cream that has not been whipped, although whipped cream is often used because it’s easier to get it floating on top! Irish coffee may be considered a variation on the hot toddy, which is Irish whiskey, hot water, and a thick slice of lemon spiked with cloves. (My mother gave me that as a child when I had the flu…no wonder I’m an alco lol!) 1 1/2 oz Irish whiskey 1 tsp Brown sugar (that’s the original recipe, you can use regular sugar, but no sugar substitutes as the sugar is what makes the cream float.) 6 oz Hot coffee (boiling water and instant coffee is often used in Irish Pubs) Heavy cream (whipped or not...you are the chef) The glass will be either a stem or a mug. Hot black coffee is poured into the glass. Whiskey and at least one level teaspoon of sugar (use 2 if you like your coffee sweeter) are stirred in until fully dissolved. The

sugar is essential for floating liquid cream on top so don’t use any fake stuff such as “splenda”. Thick cream is carefully poured over the back of a spoon initially held just above the surface of the coffee and gradually raised a little. The layer of cream will float on the coffee without mixing. The coffee is drunk through the layer of cream, You DO NOT use a straw to drink Irish coffee! Beef stewed in Guinness is being served through the weekend @ Le Patio and I’ll be making Irish Coffee too... Happy St Paddy’s Day!!H

Work Time, Work Out! Great ideas for when you just can’t make the gym! By TOM BONANTI Spring - Break is upon us in South Florida. Whether you’re off on a cruise to some exotic tropical paradise or just staying here in sunny South Florida, warmer weather means less clothes and more time to strut your body at the beach, on deck, or poolside. The only trouble is that all winter, spring, summer and fall, your job keeps demanding more of your time – time you’d rather spend in the gym. On those days when deadlines, long hours, and demanding bosses keep you from getting to the gym you can still get in a workout right there in the office. Here are some super exercises that you can do on break or between meetings. These must-do moves will help you to get in a pump and burn a few calories until you can get to the gym. The squat is the best exercise for your lower body, especially your butt. Stand tall with your feet approximately 2 feet apart, toes pointed slightly outward. Bend your knees until your thighs are nearly parallel to the floor. Hold for four deep breaths then gradually stand back up to starting position. Repeat 15 to 20 times. Keep your back straight, hands on your hips and look straight ahead keep-

ing your chin slightly upward. To make this exercise harder, add weight by holding a couple of large books. Follow each set of squats with high kicks. Lean over a bench or chair, steady yourself on one foot and kick up and out as high as you can with the other leg for 15 to 20 reps then change sides. These are great butt shapers. Push Ups are dynamite exercises for the entire upper body, especially your chest. For a bigger, harder chest, boulder shoulders and pumped biceps and triceps do your push ups daily. Bend your elbows and place your palms on the floor a bit to the side and in front of the shoulders. Straighten your arms and lift your body to balance on palms and toes. Bend your elbows to lower your body 3 to 4 inches. Press back up to start. Repeat 10 to 15 times. For variation try a set with your arms out as wide as you can, then do a set with arms shoulder width apart, then bring your arms in as close as you can. This will allow you to target and isolate the muscle groups of the upper body. Criss-cross crunches will not only give you awesome abs, but they challenge all aspects of the core at once. Lie on a towel or a small exercise mat (you can store one under your desk) with your left knee bent towards your chest and right

leg extended up off the floor. Place your hands behind your head to cradle your neck and head. Never pull on them. Curl head, neck and shoulders up off the floor. Rotate from the middle so that your right shoulder is pointing toward your left knee. Hold one breath then slowly rotate to the other side by bending the right knee and extending the left leg as the left elbow moves to the right knee. Continue alternating to complete the set. Repeat 10 to 15 times on each side. Try this routine in the morning before you get to the office. Then find an uncluttered place at work to do it on your lunch break. Bust up the afternoon doldrums by doing it again on days when you can’t get to the gym.H

HOME SWEET HOME By MICHAEL FRENCH

So, what turns four walls and a collection of rooms into a HOME? I’ve had this discussion with friends and family many times through the years. The word “home” has a much deeper meaning and is far more intangible. Home is the one place where you can do

what you want, when you want, and how you want. You are not constrained by anyone else’s standards. Home is your most personal and valuable possession. Is where you sleep, and hang your hat after work, the parties, and where you introduce new friends to your most private world just an impersonal and colorless canvas that says little about you? Or, is your inner voice of how you view the world, what gives you comfort, happiness and peace heard through out the spaces of the place you call home? Would someone reasonably be able to tell you lived there if they didn’t know the home was yours? They should. More than anywhere else, home should be a sanctuary where you can recharge, and refresh your soul. Make your “castle” a personal oasis where you can quench your thirst for solitude, and the freedom to be totally yourself, stripping off the “mask” you may wear at work etc. What makes a house a home is the comfort level one has when he is there. Being in a safe and nurturing environment is so important. You are safe because you know with absolute certainty you can be yourself and be accepted by people who love you. Nurture yourself with a wall

dedicated to the places you’ve been, and to beloved friends and family. Fond memories will make your heart smile. Being in a comfortable and familiar environment is so important to your sense of well being. People, refreshingly so, are realizing all the space in the world isn’t the answer to happiness, nor is it prudent. More space equals higher taxes and it’s less friendly to the environment. Too many of us are almost enslaved, being more concerned with creating stoic, mute showcases, making “Keeping up with the Joneses” the primary goal instead of what makes us happy. It’s YOUR HOME. Decorate in the fashion which gives you the most intimate, personal, aesthetic and spiritual pleasure. A house can be absolutely gorgeous with beautiful designer furnishings, a high end chef ’s kitchen full of the latest appliances and shiny granite, a bathroom with five star spa amenities, and a master suite with glistening silk sheets and an eider down duvet fitted bed. Without love, warmth and harmony it’s like a stunning, attractive man with the personality of a stone. The greatest ingredient that turns a house into a home is the people in it! There’s something comforting about

being around the things you love. My parent’s house always felt like home because it was full of warmth. Home is cozy. Home is lived in. It’s a pair of shoes in the corner, a blanket on the sofa, or “Fido’s” nose print on the window pane, left there while he was impatiently waiting to see your face, and magazines, not perfectly displayed, on the coffee table. All those things say, “Someone LIVES here!” Kick off your shoes. Just throw the clothes on the bed. Put on the most comfortable T-shirt and jeans you have. Heck, throw all your cares to the wind! Turn on your favorite music and wildly, dance naked if you want! Just don’t scare the dog! Remember it’s YOUR HOME! Go the kitchen, pour yourself a nice glass of wine, step outside onto your patio or in the tropical, private paradise you created. Now, sit down. Relax. Yeah, put your feet up on the table. No one cares. Take a deep breath, let it out with a big sigh, and bask in the serendipitous luxury of YOUR “Home Sweet Home!”H

Washington D.C. Sassy, social, sophisticated, and ultra gay By PAUL RUBIO Outside of presidential and war monuments, Obama rhetoric, history lessons and debates between donkeys and elephants, DC thrives on the social dynamics of the sassy power homos that rule the District and the overtly intellectual, headstrong women who spend way too much time on Capitol Hill. Besides DC’s colossal permanent gay presence, LGBT popular shows such as Real World DC (with the overexposed token queer, Mike Manning), Real Housewives of DC (party crashing anyone?) and Top Chef DC (highlighting the city’s growing foodie scene) have helped peak a global GLBT travel interest in our nation’s capital. Much like its new TV persona, DC is a happening place for the latest and greatest hotel, restaurant, nightlife, and overall social trends. No matter where you go in the District these days, it feels like the city just can’t stop celebrating recent advances in the LGBT struggle for political justice. Hot off the heels of DOMA’s repeal and the District’s gay marriage victory, there’s never been a better time to visit! When it comes to leisure and business travel, DC’s five-star signatures relentlessly battle it out to wear the crown as the city’s “it” hotel. Now that the buzz has long faded around the Obamas’ pre White House residence at the Hay-Adams, the rooftop bar at the W Hotel, DC (which peers over the White House) and the 30month full-scale restoration Jefferson Washington DC, it’s the Mandarin Oriental, Washington DC that’s garnering oodles of attention. Fresh from a mini facelift, the Mandarin Oriental, Washington DC (202.554.8588,www.mandarinoriental.com/ washington), is redefining DC luxury with the redesign of its four Signature

Suites. The 3,500-square-foot Presidential Suite, 1,200-square-foot Oriental Suite, Mandarin and Ambassador Suites, boast stunning and refined contemporary interiors equally fit for the discerning, upscale jetsetter or a Middle East prince. Even the standard rooms of the 400-unit hotel are exquisitely appointed and exceptionally comfortable with the brand’s signature Asian influence and crisp, clean style. One of the hotel’s greatest features is the Tai Pan Lounge – an expansive club level lounge where guests are treated to breakfast, cocktail hours, hors d’oeuvres and huge jars of decorated cookies. It’s not just the food that stands out at Tai Pan. The stellar service stands reminiscent of sister properties in Thailand. The lounge’s laid-back living room vibe and fantastic views often leave you debating whether to chillax in the lounge or in your fabulous room. Indulgence hits a new high at the hotel’s elaborate spa, where treatments like the 90-minute deep tissue bamboo massage are simply part of a greater, unforgettable spa experience. To meet the rising demand of haute cuisine, high-end hotels like the Mandarin have been busy constructing pristine nests for celebrity chefs to lay their golden eggs. The hotel recently welcomed acclaimed Chef Eddie Moran to partake in the growing regional trend of midAtlantic comfort food with Sou’Wester, a decadent eating extravaganza celebrated by power brokers, policy makers and DC socialites. This is one restaurant where the gay boys don’t count carbs and fat grams; in fact, they shovel in the cornbread, the oysters, the Grilled North Carolina Shrimp Cheddar Cheese Grits, and the Sautéed Chesapeake Bay Rockfish like a gluttonous Kirstie Allie captured binging on a tabloid cover. Further north towards Dupont Circle, the Jefferson

Hotel (202.448.2300, www.jeffersondc.com), has also revealed its latest reason to increase your personal budget deficit, Plume, which showcases the talents of Alain Ducasse’s former disciple, Damon Gordon. Somewhere between white gloved service and street-side pupusas in Mt. Pleasant, DC’s mid-priced eateries impress with hearty portions, creative cuisine, and great ambience. Hank’s Oyster Bar (202.462.4265, www.hanksdc.com), for example, is 110% sensational seafood rapture. “Small plates” like the Griddled Crabcake, the Steamed Blue Bay Mussels, and the BBQ’d oysters broiled in Tabasco, butter and breadcrumbs are what America’s foodie revolution is all about – amazing, fresh ingredients, fierce ingenuity and unbelievable taste. The “large plates” impress, too. The Lobster Roll is oh so New England fabulous and the Bouillabaisse is a favorite of DC’s snobbiest French expats. Other mid-range favorites are better know for their atmosphere and drinks than their cuisine. Places like the Duplex Diner

(202.265.7828, www.duplexdiner.com) specialize in fruity, liquid dinners, climaxing on Thursdays when the who’s-who of GLBT DC pack the house. Likewise, the Mexican institution Lauriol Plaza (202.387.0035, www.lauriolplaza.com), delights with yummy margaritas (but authentic cuisine is far better at places like Casa Oaxaca (202.387.2272, www.oaxacaindc.com) in Adams Morgan). Though spring has just begun, there’s already chatter about the midweek mayhem of the Tuesday rooftop pool party at the Donovan House (202.737.1200, www.thompsonhotels.com/hotels/dc), which resumes in May. In the meantime, scene queens have a few classics to choose from – Cobalt/30 Degrees, Ziegfield’s/Secrets, JR’s, Nellie’s, Town Danceboutique – and their rotating schedule of weekly throw downs. And every night of the week there’s the ubiquitous DC happy hour– an early evening intoxicating mix of networking, socializing, and political debate.H
