[ JUST ADAM

The week reflected back through fabulously funny eyes

NEED TO EDIT MY FOLLOWERS. I’m being followed by “Lee Jeans” on Instagram? God! Just when I thought my pathetic life couldn’t get any worse! What’s next? Wrangler carpenter dad jeans? DEAR GOLDEN GIRLS. Even though you’re nearly all dead, thank you for bringing the amazing term “Shady Pines “ into my f*cking life. It’s such an amazing catch-all phrase that can be utilized in any situation where you wish to dismiss and throw shade at somebody (i.e. annoying people, annoying old people, annoying young people, as well as annoying people of any age who say stupid things. SCAM ARTIST ARE BACK AT WORK. Another day, another message from a doppelganger, calling me to tell me that my Social Security and driver’s license are suspended due to the criminal charge the IRS is filing against me. I Hung up. His wife(?) calls me, telling me I owe the IRS money. I told her I was confused, last I checked the IRS wasn’t in India. That’s when the fun begins and she starts ranting and raving! Sometimes it’s just the little joys in life that get you through the day! JUST AN OBSERVATION. Did Caroline Manzo undergo a hair transplant? Because in the previews for her new-tired family’s reality show, she is sporting the exact same haircut that Rosie O’Donnell rocked when she officially came out as a prickly angry edgy lesbian! DONALD TRUMP SCHOOLYARD BULLY BEHAVIOR. Instead of stepping up and doing the best you can like a man, you cry, threaten that everything is rigged against you, make a fuss, and walk away with all your toys. STUPIDEST THING EVER. People on social and hook up sites (Tinder, Grindr) that put profile pictures of themselves, with their “girlfriend, “Bestiiiieee,” ride-or-die chick, or perhaps a lesbian lover of Miami. First, does she even know and approve? Secondly, does she realize that simply by association with you she’s a slut, by default, because every time your thirsty face is out there, she’s right there with you hungry as evah! MY THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK. Why does Hillary Clinton have to apologize for insulting xenophobes, uneducated morons, and racists? I’m more offended by Drumpf’s supporters ‘penchants for mullets, rat-tails, Confederate flags on everything, marrying their sisters, making “Larry the Cable Guy” still relevant, and producing human folk that look like Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis and the anti-gay Dick Cheney in Amish drag!

Random thoughts from social media and beyond this week

Fort Lauderdale resident and local favorite, Latrice Royale has turned her sugary sweetness into a chocolate bar called: What else? The Chunky Yet Funky candy bar. Latrice commented, “It will tantalize your taste buds with milk chocolate, caramel, sea salt, pretzels and peanuts.” It’s available at Sweet! CNN anchor Anderson Cooper will be the first openly gay person to host a US Presidential debate. He will moderate, the second in the line-up of presidential debates, on October 9 at Washington University in St. Louis.

Infamous Pharma CEO Martin Shkreli turned up outside Chelsea Clinton’s home to mock Democratic Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton after she was diagnosed with pneumonia shouting. “Why are you so sick? Drop out!” Then he tweeted, “I enjoyed screaming ‘why are you so sick’ and ‘go Trump’ at Hillary Clinton. Get well soon babe!”

Eight-time world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao sparked criticism across the world in February, after describing gay couples as “worse than animals” now regrets his comments. Pacquiao says: “I am not changing my position for what the bible says. But my mistake is just comparing them to animals. I am just human. Nobody is perfect.”

Heee’s Back: Jungwirth Returns to Broward Jail ORLANDO--U.S. Magistrate Judge Gregory J. Kelly in Orlando ordered Craig Allen Jungwirth, 50, to be formally transferred back to Broward County to face Federal charges that Jungwirth illegally threatened to injure others via interstate commerce communication. In court documents, the FBI accuses Jungwirth of using Facebook to post a series of slurs against the gay community in Wilton Manors, threatening a massacre of LGBTs over the Labor Day weekend. “None of you deserve to live” and, “If you losers thought the Pulse nightclub shooting was bad, wait till you see what

I’m planning for Labor Day,” he allegedly posted. The Florida Highway Patrol arrested Jungwirth two days before the holiday in Osceola County on a charge of driving on a suspended license. He was jailed in Seminole County and turned over to federal custody Thursday, the Sheriff’s Office said. Jungwirth had been living with his mother outside of Orlando. According to the SunSentinel newspaper, on Sept. 2, the FBI subpoenaed records that indicated that the threatening posts were made from an Internet account registered to an address owned by Jungwirth’s moth nn

NCAA pulls 7 postseason events out of NC due to LGBT law

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The NCAA has pulled seven championship events from North Carolina, including opening-weekend men’s basketball tournament games, for the coming year due to a state law that some say can lead to discrimination against LGBT people. In a news release Monday, the NCAA says the decision by its board of governors came “because of the cumulative actions taken by the state concerning civil rights protections.” Along with men’s basketball tournament games set for Greensboro, the NCAA will relocate: nThe Division I women’s soccer championship; nThe Division III men’s and women’s soccer championships; nThe Division I women’s golf regional championships; nThe Division III men’s and women’s tennis championships; nThe Division I women’s lacrosse championship; nAnd the Division II baseball championship. nn 10

HIV-positive man gets decade for unprotected Craigslist sex ATLANTA (AP) - A Georgia man will spend the next 10 years in prison for using Craigslist to arrange sexual encounters with at least two different women without revealing he was HIV-positive. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that 24-yearold James Allen Propes was found guilty on two counts of reckless conduct by an HIV-infected person. The Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office says Judge Tom Davis called Propes “an evil person” during sentencing Friday. The district attorney in a news release says two victims filed reports about Propes in 2014. Both said they met him on Craigslist, had sex with him and “later found out that he was HIV positive by finding an article online that he had been charged and convicted of a similar transaction in another state.” nn

Small town fires gay police chief, citing poor performance COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - The small town South Carolina police chief who lost her job two years ago because she was gay has been fired again - this time by the man who once saved her job. Latta Town Administrator Jarrett Taylor said Crystal Moore’s firing had nothing to do with her sexual orientation - after all, he pushed to have her rehired in 2014. Instead, he was angry and saddened that Moore couldn’t solve growing problems with bad morale, poor decisions and administrative tasks that weren’t done on time, Taylor told The Associated Press on Friday, one day after firing Moore. “It’s aggravating. I defended her so strongly a couple of years ago. I still stand by my actions then. But things have changed,” said Taylor, who also serves on Town Council. Moore and her lawyer didn’t immediately respond to messages from the AP. But Moore posted on her Facebook page she was shocked and angered, especially because she was recently diagnosed with a cancerous tumor on her thumb. “This won’t stop me from serving the people of Latta or Dillon County. This is a tough time for all of us, but I know justice will prevail,” wrote Moore, who also is running for sheriff in Dillon County. Taylor promised to provide the paperwork specifying why Moore was fired as soon as he could gather it. “I’m seriously sorry this came at an inopportune time in her life. But at some point, the job has to be done right,” Taylor said. nn

Mexicans march for gay marriage, day after opponents rally

MEXICO CITY (AP) Hundreds of gay and lesbian rights supporters marched to Mexico City’s Metropolitan Cathedral to support same-sex marriage Sunday, one day after thousands marched against it. The marchers carried a banner reading “We are families too” and placards reading “I respect your family, respect mine.” Sunday’s march came after marches in several Mexican citiesSaturday opposing same-sex marriage. White-clad demonstrators Saturday chanted “Children need a father and a mother!” and “Wake up and defend the family.” In May, President Enrique Pena Nieto proposed legalizing samesex marriage nationwide. It is currently legal only in some places such as Mexico City, the northern state of Coahuila and Quintana Roo state on the Caribbean coast. Pena Nieto’s party suffered losses in midterm elections in June and has largely sat on the initiative since then. nn

Convictions tossed, new trial ordered in Rutgers webcam case

KAINE SAYS CATHOLIC CHURCH MIGHT CHANGE ON GAY MARRIAGE

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine is predicting that the Roman Catholic Church may eventually change its opposition to gay marriage. Kaine is a devout Roman Catholic as well as a U.S. senator from Virginia and a former governor of that state. He told the Human Rights Campaign during its national dinner Saturday in Washington that he had changed his mind about gay marriage and that his church may follow suit one day. “I think it’s going to change because my church also teaches me about a creator who, in the first chapter of Genesis, surveyed the entire world, including mankind, and said, ‘It is very good,’” Kaine said. He then recalled Pope Francis’ remark that “who am I to judge?” in reference to gay people. While he pledged to fight for increased rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer Americans, Kaine admitted that he had opposed gay marriage until 2005. “For a long time while I was battling for LGBT equality, I believed that marriage was something different,” he said. Virginia’s lieutenant governor when state lawmakers pushed for a constitutional amendment to keep marriage between one man and one woman, he recalled speaking to amendment supporters who said they hoped LGBT people would feel so unwelcome that they would move out of Virginia. “When I heard the proponents describe their motivations, it became clearer to me where I should stand on this,” he said. Before introducing Kaine, Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin called Republican nominee Donald Trump the “gravest threat” the LGBTQ community has faced in a presidential election. nn

NEWARK, NJ (AP) - A New Jersey appeals court has thrown out the 15-count conviction of a former Rutgers University student whose roommate killed himself after being spied on a webcam kissing another man. The court tossed several bias intimidation counts against Dharun Ravi (dah-ROON’ RAH’-vee) due to a change in state law. It ordered a new trial on the other counts because, the judges wrote, the bias evidence tainted the jury’s verdict. Ravi faced up to 10 years in prison but was sentenced to probation plus 30 days in county jail. Prosecutors had argued the sentencing judge overstepped his authority by imposing a sentence that was too lenient. Friday’sruling rendered that argument moot. nn

TRANSGENDER Parents, student sue over transgender bathroom policy

VIRGINIA, MN (AP) - A school district in northeastern Minnesota is facing a lawsuit over its restroom and locker room policy. Attorneys for a group of parents and students filed the federal lawsuit against Virginia Public Schools, the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Justice over a federal rule that says transgender students in public schools must be allowed to use restrooms that correspond with their gender identity. Virginia parents and students formed the group Privacy Matters to challenge the school district’s policy. One of the group’s attorneys, Gary McCaleb from the nonprofit Alliance Defending Freedom, says no child should be forced into an intimate setting such as a locker room with someone of the opposite sex. The plaintiffs have asked for a permanent injunction against the district’s policy and the federal rule. nn Assembled through Associated Press September 15, 2016

IT’S WAR

LGBTs Officially in Battle for Swing Dates BY RICHARD HACK

n

For all the talk about Hillary Clinton’s health and that of her staff this past week (she wasn’t the only one to contract pneumonia), there has been no slow-down on the campaign trail as the candidates push toward their first Presidential Debate on September 26. If anything, the war of words has turned more turbulent, vitriolic and specific with the LGBT community finding itself on the front lines of this political battle, like it or not. It was Vice Presidential candidate Tim Kaine who gave the

12

September 15, 2016

first inkling this past weekend when delivering the keynote address at the 20th annual black-tie Human Rights Campaign Dinner by calling on LGBTs to “mobilize.” It was a direct call to arms aimed at insuring that the Clinton-Kaine ticket won the swing states— some of which are actually in Trump territory. Florida is always considered an essential state for a national political win. Four years ago, Obama won the state by less than one percent. But a lot has happened in the Sunshine State

in four years, including the legalization of same-sex marriage. The unemployment rate has dropped to 4.7%, which is a little lower than the national average. What used to be a retirement mentality has switched to an upwardly mobile state that saw half a million Latinos move into Florida in the past four years. Most of them are registered Democrats, with the minority now accounting for 25% of the electorate. It was also the home to the largest massacre in recent America history with the Pulse

Nightclub murders. In addition, Florida has 11 of the nation’s most dangerous cities. This becomes relevant on a number of levels as the Presidential contest moves into its final months. Florida is a state whose northern borders are replete with religious zealots and radical conservatives who think violence is a likely outcome should Hillary Clinton be elected president. They agree with Kentucky governor Matt Bevin, who also spoke last Saturday, to a very different audience.

While speaking at the annual Value Voters Summit in Washington DC, Bevin stated that should Clinton be elected president of the United States, the nation would recover but not without shedding blood. “The roots of the tree of liberty are watered by what? The blood, of who? The tyrants to be sure, but who else. The patriots,” Bevin said, referencing a quote from Thomas Jefferson. “Whose blood will be shed? It may be that of those in this room. It might be that of our children and grandchildren. I have nine children. It breaks my heart to think it might be their blood that is needed to redeem something, to reclaim something that we through our apathy and indifference have given away.” The Democrats were quick to dismiss Bevin’s comments. “I believe that his call to shed the blood of fellow Americans is unconstitutional and a violation of his sworn oath to uphold the laws of the commonwealth,” Democrat Nancy Jo Kemper said at a news conference just outside Bevin’s office in the state capitol. Kemper is challenging Republican U.S. Rep. Andy Barr in Kentucky’s 6th District. Republican Party of Kentucky spokesman Tres Watson called Kemper’s comments “a desperate act by a desperate candidate.” Bevin is in his first term and is not on the ballot in Novem-

p

ber. But he is campaigning hard to help Republicans win a majority in Kentucky’s House of Representatives, the last legislative chamber in the South still controlled by Democrats. He used his speech on Saturday to encourage Christian voters to not be silent on issues they care about. “Look at the atrocity of abortion, so many have remained silent. It’s a slippery slope. First we’re killing children, then it’s ‘don’t ask don’t tell.’ Now it’s this genderbending, don’t ask, don’t be a bigot, don’t be unreasonable, don’t be unenlightened, heaven forbid,” Bevin said, referring to policies on gays in the military and other LGBT issues. Clinton believes that her key to winning is through the direct mobilization of gays and lesbians who have a history of organizing political victories. Clinton believes that the LGBTs are essential to win Florida and the other swing states of Arizona (where they are at a virtual tie), Colorado (where Clinton is currently leading by 9.7%), Georgia (virtual tie), Iowa (virtual tie), Michigan (Clinton, 5.6% lead), Missouri (Trump leads by 3%), New Hampshire (Clinton by 5%), Nevada (tie), North Carolina (tie), Ohio (tie), Pennsylvania (Clinton by 6.2%) and Virginia (Clinton by 3.7%). It’s war. And it’s happening now. nn

The key to winning is through the direct mobilization of gays and lesbians who have a history of organizing political victories.

Ethos:

Greece comes to Wilton Manors In a word, Ethos Greek Bisto is Fantastikós. Fantastic.

n

In this city where there’s a Thai restaurant on every third corner, the opening of a Greek restaurant on Wilton Drive is cause for celebration. We’re not talking about breaking plates on the floor and holding hands dancing the Kalamatianós. We’re talking about a celebration of healthy food where the platters BY arriving from RICHARD the kitchen HACK are a mosaic of colors and aromas that looks as fresh and healthy as they are. True to every Greek menu is an assortment of wonderful spreads, served with toasted pita bread. Our favorite is the Zesty Creamy Feta with the roasted red pepper. But then, Ethos serves some of the best Hummus around as well, albeit heavy on the garlic…but oh so delicious. $6.00 a plate and enough to share around the table. For those who don’t know Greek Dakos, the version served

14

September 15, 2016

at Ethos is as flavorful as any we’ve ever experienced in Crete from where this dish originates. It’s a Greek-style brochetta that uses a hardened bread called rusk which is topped with tomato puree and feta cheese, plus basil. Ask for some chopped olives to complete the taste and be sure to pass around. $9. Speaking of sharing, the best way to get an instant sample of all the spreads as well as other popular dishes at Ethos is through its Taste of Ethos Silver or Gold assortment platters. In the Silver Sampler, enjoy the various spreads, a Greek salad (with vine ripe tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, peppers, feta, kalamata olives, house greens, red wine vinegar & olive oil), stuffed grape leaves (a Greek classic with rice, herbs and lemon sauce), and the meat platter of gyro, grilled chicken, pork tenderloin, grilled kefte rice, and wedged potatoes. At $21 per person, (with a minimum of two persons), it is the bargain taste treat. The Gold Sampler adds two lamb chops to the mix for an extra $6.00. For a slighter smaller dish in plate size if not quantity, try the Surf and Turf (pictured),

two full-sized lamb chops with shrimp saganaki—a shrimp over rice dish named after the skillet in which it is cooked. Separating the portions is some lovely grilled eggplant. Magnificent. $26. Every Greek restaurant has at least one version of Calamari, and at Ethos you’ve got your choice of two—Grilled (on a bed of sautéed red cabbage) for $11, and Fried (dusted with seasoned flour and served with red marinara sauce for $10. The Grilled Octopus at $14 is sashimi grade and charred to perfection. The ambiance of Ethos is sophisticated stonework and well-polished wood with a long, packed bar on the south side of the restaurant and an exposed kitchen to the west. The skilled servers, including our own fresh-faced John, were school in the food and steeped in Greek history. From the look through the kitchen’s glassed front, it is a well-run place with a choreographed display of grilling, slicking and plating that needs only an orchestration to be its own show. Unfortunately for Ethos, its major downfall is its very design. Planned throughout to allow

intimate seating for two or four, and with gentle lighting that says romance in tones of orange and gold, Ethos drops the ball in its music level, which is so high that customers try to overcome the sound my speaking louder. The perfect setting for a lingering feast with a loved one, and the kind of fabulous food we would cherish to consume often is overwhelmed by a noise level that is disturbing in its intensity. A request to manager Jamie Logue to lower the music brought only a temporary respite, for all too soon, it was re-upped with the spirited and glamorous crowd right with it. Plan to make a stop at Ethos Greek Bistro. Go early before the crowd gets too loud…and be sure to them that the Agenda sent you. Fantastikós.

OPINION DR. DURRELL’S SPIRITUAL PRESCRIPTIONS

[

MY SACRED VALUE IS NOT A SUBJECT FOR DEBATE Marriage equality in the US, the increase of gay affirming religious denominations, and some politicians openly pledging to protect the rights of LGBTQ people are all wonderful advances for justice in our country, but there is more work to do. And, we can see easily enough that with these advances the political and religious extreme Right continues By Rev. to work to slow and even Durrell reverse the progress that has been made. Watkins The insults from the Right, especially those who claim to speak for “God” as they call gay people “sinners” and demean gay lives as a “lifestyle” may not pack the political punch they once did, but they are still ever present. I completely (and publicly) reject the idea that same-gender love or attraction is in any way “sinful.” Often, the response to my not accepting

a sub-human status is for anti-gay religionists to quote some bible verse at me (as if I just never ran across those verses in seminary or in my ministerial career). When belching a bible verse at me like a sorcerer’s curse doesn’t zap me straight (or at least render me contrite for being gay), bible bullies will often deliver this all too familiar spiritual sucker punch: “We’ll have to agree to disagree.” The attempted set up in such a situation is to suggest that if same-gender loving people can’t smile when being attacked, then there must be something horribly wrong with us. I don’t think so. They’re trying to sell it, but I ain’t buying it. I will disagree with someone who says a verse here or there from an ancient text proves that I’m pond scum, but I will not agree that our disagreement is merely two opposing but equally valid views. My sacred value is not a matter for debate; it is the one thing about which I am completely unwilling to compromise. The fact is that a significant percentage of every population in every era of human history (and in animal populations as well) develop same-gender love and attraction, and are prob-

PAUL BERGE

n

ably biologically predisposed to do so. This isn’t new information. The Kinsey Reports of the 40s and 50s, Dr. Evelyn Hooker’s research in the late 50s, the American Psychiatric Association in 1973, the American Psychological Association in 1975, and every major mental health organization (including the World Health Organization) in the west and many throughout the world have confirmed this. There is nothing aberrant, disordered, immoral, wicked, or shameful about mutually beneficial and agreed upon relationships. The gender identities of those in a relationship are not what make those relationships sacred. The simple truth is that some people are gay, it’s perfectly natural for them, and it harms no one to acknowledge that. Period. LGBTQ people are a wonderful part of the glorious diversity of the world. Being gay is one my blessings and I give thanks for the life I share with the person I love. Religion should never be used to make people feel ashamed of who they are, and it certainly shouldn’t be used to punish genuine, mutually shared love. Religion at its best will affirm the inherent dignity of all people. That is, at least, the religion I try to practice and the religion I wish to share.

Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins is the author of Saved From Salvation (available at Amazon.com) and is the senior minister of Sunshine Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale. nn

CREEP OF THE WEEK

Laura Ingraham BY D’ANNE WITOWSKI

n

By now, even if you don’t follow any kind of sportzball, you have heard about Colin Kaepernick, the San Francisco 49ers player who refused to stand during the National Anthem before a game. His reasoning is pretty compelling. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” he said. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.” A fair point! Because that is the sad reality of racism in America. Naturally, Kaepernick’s protest was widely respected and elicited thoughtful debate across the country. Ha ha. No. Actually, Kaepernick hates the police and wants to kill Whitey. At least that’s the word on the street. A street where everyone who lives there is white. Although maybe a few lawn jockeys here and there for, you know, decoration. See, white people in America are really delicate flowers who can’t handle being reminded of the total fucking atrocities committed against people of color in this country 18

September 15, 2016

for, like, ever. Oh and saying, “But I didn’t own slaves!” is not a get-out-of-racism-free card. So, yeah, some people are really upset with Kaepernick because they fetishize the flag and that song about the flag to the point of absurdity. Like declaring that a totally valid protest is making Betsy Ross turn in her grave and why doesn’t that guy just get back to being a gladiator for our entertainment already. Oh, and bravo to soccer player Megan Rapinoe who knelt during the National Anthem before a recent game in solidarity with Kaepernick. “Being a gay American, I know what it means to look at the flag and not have it protect all of your liberties,” Rapinoe said. “It’s important to have white people stand in support of people of color on this.” Right on. Almost makes me want to watch some soccer. Not so right on is Laura Ingraham’s response to Kaepernick’s protest. She Tweeted on Aug. 30, “Good Q: What would have happened if Kapernick [sic] disrespected the rainbow flag bef the game?” Which is actually not a good question at all because not only did she spell his name wrong, the comparison is illogical. As many people on Twitter have

already pointed out. Writer John Howell Harris responded, “b/c gay people have a nearly 300 year history of subjugation & institutionalized oppression of black people? Is that the Q?” Now that is a good question. Ingraham, who has called for people to start wearing adult diapers in order to protect themselves from the possibility of sharing a public restroom with a trans person and has said that being against marriage equality “doesn’t say that you’re anti-gay people or you don’t like gay people,” is obviously not expecting an answer to her rhetorical query. She’s posing the question in order to accuse liberals of choosing gays over America, because you can’t be pro-LGBT and love your country. Nor can you raise issues that make white people uncomfortable, which means anything related to racism, which is over because Obama, obviously. It’s a consistent conservative trope: liberals/progressives hate America because they have the audacity to point out ways that America is not “great.” Of course, it’s okay when Donald Trump does it. The truth is, America is a country with great ideals. It’s a shame that we still have yet to live up to them. nn

She said, “In the ten years since I learned my brother Curtis was gay, my views and rhetoric about homosexuality have been tempered, because I have seen him and his companion Richard lead their lives with dignity, fidelity, and courage.” According to her brother, they remain divided over the issue of gay marriage. Ingraham has stated that she supports civil unions, but still believes that marriage “is between a man and a woman.” nn –Kevin Broady

POWERFUL HELPFUL TIPS

n

Without a doubt, nearly everyone agrees that regular exercise is an essential part of life. Besides feeling better, looking finer, and living longer, people who exercise daily report increased vim and vigor, less anxiety and depression, and a better outlook on life in general. So why is it so difficult for so many folks to commit to a regular fitness lifestyle? Well, there are millions of excuses, some pretty valid, others kind of lame, but as I tell clients, when you really want to do something badly enough, you will make it happen. Here are six habits that I find to be very common among my most successful and fit clients.

VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE. You don’t have to be pumping iron or snorting away for hours on a tread-mill to keep fit and trim. Regular weights and cardio are necessary, for sure, but really fit people participate in all kinds of activities to keep themselves in shape. Power walking, swimming, yoga, martial arts, tennis, cycling and a whole array of different activities can also build muscles and maintain a healthy heart. Just have fun and be adventurous, you won’t regret it! MAKE EXERCISE A SOCIAL ACTIVITY. Sure, many guys enjoy an intense, solo, uninterrupted weight training session, or a relaxing solitary run on the beach. For many others, the social aspect of exercise is beneficial. Working out with a likeminded, committed friend can keep you on track. Having a trainer to answer to on a regular basis at a scheduled time will keep you consistent and accountable. Zumba and aerobics classes can help you have fun with healthy happy people after a day of drudgery at the office. MAKE EXERCISE A MAJOR PRIORITY IN YOUR LIFE. Whether you work out in the morning or hit the gym on your way home after work, make sure that you don’t put your fitness routine on the back burner. Regular exercise is just as essential to your life, if not more so, than any business meeting or conference call.

Six Habits of Very Fit People

DON’T MAKE EXCUSES. Too tired to exercise? Not a good reason! So you’ve had a tough day at the office, well who hasn’t? You just need a tiny nap before you hit the gym after work? Chances are you’ll stay sacked out on the sofa long after the gym has close that night. You’ll feel better, more rejuvenated if you can just get to the gym, track or pool rather that succumb to a little fatigue. During exercise, you breathe deeply as you process more O2 and your body produces stress busting hormones that’ll give you that exercise “high”. KEEP A JOURNAL AND CHART YOUR PROGRESS. Become aware of all the things that happen to your body as you get fit. Besides bigger muscles and less body fat, better sleep, more energy, clearer cognitive processes, lower resting heart rate and glowing reports from your doctor are a few more things you have to look forward to in the near future. REWARD YOURSELF. Making behavior changes and sticking to them is hard work. Positive reinforcement does wonders for building morale. Whether it’s a new bathing suit, an occasional night out on the town, or a cruise, make sure that you celebrate your accomplishments and reward yourself for making fitness your ongoing lifestyle! nn

Adrenal Fatigue:

n

Adrenal fatigue is an extremely common problem that affects people around the globe. In fact, it is so common that I have heard it sometimes referred to as the “21st-century stress syndrome.” It is important to note that adrenal fatigue is a separate, distinct condition from adrenal insufficiency. Adrenal fatigue is thought to be caused by long-term stress, which wears down the adrenal glands and prevents them from producing sufficient levels of key hormones. Adrenal insufficiency also occurs when these glands cannot produce healthy amounts of hormones, but stress By does not cause it. Dr. Ferdinand Adrenal fatigue can Cabrera present itself in slightly different ways to all the people it affects. Many symptoms are hard to recognize as distinct problems and not simply due to stress or poor sleeping or eating habits. However, some signs are more common than all the others are.

THE MANY SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF ADRENAL FATIGUE

nYou have trouble getting out of bed in the morning, no matter how well you slept.

Do you have “Stress Syndrome”? PART ONE OF A TWO-PART SERIES

24

September 15, 2016

This is caused by a disruption to normal cortisol (a hormone produced in the adrenal glands) cycles. nYou feel fatigued throughout the day. The lower-than-normal levels of hormones in the bodies of people suffering from adrenal fatigue can make it hard to maintain any kind of energy. nYou struggle to handle any amount of stress. The same low level of hormones that keeps sufferers fatigued makes it difficult for them to deal with physical or emotional stress. nYou crave salt. People with ineffective adrenal glands have less ability to balance the levels of important minerals in our bodies, including sodium. This leads to a craving for salty foods. nYou sometimes experience a burst of energy in the evenings. In the early stages of adrenal fatigue, many sufferers will experience a rise of energy levels in the evening as their cortisol levels fluctuate. nYou get sick more often. Cortisol helps the body’s immune system. Since people with adrenal fatigue do not produce normal levels of cortisol, their immune system becomes compromised. While the issues listed above are the most telling signs of adrenal fatigue, it can also present with numerous other symptoms, including:

• Heart palpitations during the night or when under stress • Lowered sex drive • Consistent low blood pressure • Panic or anxiety attacks • Unusually dry skin • Unexplainable hair loss • Sensitivity to chemicals in certain paints, plastics, and fingernail polishes

• • • • • •

Constipation Loss of muscle mass Causeless muscle pains Cold extremities Difficulty concentrating Low thyroid funtion, unaided by thyroid medications • Depression that antidepres sants do not help • Feelings of constant alertness

Women may experience numerous problems with their menstruation cycles if they are suffering from adrenal fatigue. They may also have a more difficult time getting pregnant. Adrenal fatigue can also make a woman more susceptible to ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids. Exercise may help combat the symptoms of adrenal fatigue in the early stages. However, it does nothing to increase adrenal function in the long term. In time, instead of helping, exercise will drain the reserves of normal hormones from a person’s body faster and make the symptoms of adrenal fatigue more pronounced. This is another sign of adrenal fatigue. Not every person who suffers from adrenal fatigue will have all the symptoms.

Whether you suffer from only the common symptoms or present with those and numerous uncommon ones, you still have adrenal fatigue. In this post, I focused on listing the signs and symptoms of adrenal fatigue so people who suffer from it can recognize the disease affecting their lives. In an upcoming article, I will discuss ways to address the symptoms and, hopefully, resolve the underlying issue. If you believe you may be one of the many people suffering from adrenal fatigue, contact Dr. Cabrera at 954-561-3175 or visit our web site at ghinstitute.com. In our next column, we will also provide recommendations for dealing with adrenal fatigue. nn

SPAY AND NEUTER!!!

Reducing pet overpopulation

n

Spaying and neutering your pets and neighborhood community pets is truly the only way we will ever reduce the growing over population of pets in our cities. Choosing to spay or neuter is one of the single best decisions you can make, not only for the long-term welfare of your pet, but to also help stop pet over-population in the TriCounty area. Every year, millions of cats and dogs of all ages and breeds are euthanized or suffer as strays. These high numbers are the result of unplanned litters that could have been prevented by spaying or neutering. Tragically, 4 million of these homeless pets are killed each year in America’s shelters. More than 7 animals per minute are killed in shelters unnecessarily across the country. That means more than 9000 animals per day. That’s INSANE, but true!! According to the ASPCA, the 10 top reasons to spay or neuter your animals are: nFemale pets can live a longer, healthier life. Spaying your pet before her first heat helps prevent uterine infections and breast cancer. nThere are major health benefits for neutering your male pet. To prevent testicular cancer, neuter your pet before six months of age. nSpayed females won’t go into heat. In heat female felines yowl and urinate more frequently – sometimes all over the house! nMale dogs won’t want to roam away from home. An intact male will try everything possible to escape and find a mate! Once free, he risks injury in traffic and fights with other males. nNeutered males are better behaved. 26

September 15, 2016

Neutered cats and dogs focus more of their attention on their human families rather than spraying strong-smelling urine all over the house. nSpaying or neutering will NOT make your pet fat. Your pet will remain fit as long as you provide exercise and monitor food intake. nHighly cost-effective. The cost of your pet’s spay/neuter surgery is a lot less than the cost of having and caring for a litter and treatment when your un-neutered tom escapes. nSpaying and neutering your pet are good for the community. Spaying and neutering reduces the number of animals that can prey on wildlife, cause car accidents, damage the local fauna and frighten children. nYour pet doesn’t need to have a litter for your children to learn about the miracle of birth. There are tons of books and videos available to teach your children about birth in a more responsible way. Spay/neuter is one of the greatest gifts you can provide your pet, your family and your community. These routine medical procedures not only reduce the number of animals who enter shelters, but they may also prevent medical and behavioral problems from developing in a cat or dog, allowing your pet to lead a longer, healthier and happier life. Spaying or neutering is unlikely to change a pet’s temperament, basic personality or levels of playfulness and general activity. However, it can reduce the incidence of some bad behavioral issues, especially sexual behaviors, such as mounting, howling and the urge to roam. The word “spay” refers to the steriliza-

tion of female pets. The term “neuter,” while more commonly used to refer to the castration of male pets. Many community programs are available to help the lower income communities by offering low-cost and free spay/neuter assistance to pet owners and community cat caregivers who can’t afford this surgery but will offer good homes and safe environments for the recipients of the programs. Voucher programs are available that utilize outside facilities approved by the counties to help with the overwhelming numbers of animals. To learn about these programs, visit the websites of Broward County Animal Control, Miami Dade and Palm Beach County shelters as each has a listing of where you can register to have your animals spay or neutered at a much lower cost then going to your local vet. Their facilities use licensed veterinarians and trained staff to keep your pets safe during the surgeries. Cost is no longer a deterrent to getting our babies fixed. Please do it for the safety of your pet and for the greater good of our over populated communities where thousands of animals are needlessly killed each year because the owners didn’t do it.

THE SECRET RECIPE

Pistachio

GUACAMOLE Ingredients: 1 small white onion, minced ¼ cup cider vinegar 4 avocados 10 oz roasted pistachios, coarsely chopped 4 Tbsp pistachio oil (found at specialty markets or Williams-Sonoma) ½ cup fresh lime juice 4 pickled jalapenos, minced 1 cup loosely packed cilantro, chopped Kosher salt, to taste 1 fresh jalapeno, thinly sliced Whole cilantro leaves Tortilla chips Directions: 1. Soak the minced onion in the cider vinegar for 1 minute. Drain the onion in a small strainer and rinse under running water. 2. Pit the avocados and scrape the flesh into a mixing bowl. Using a potato masher, lightly mash the avocados, until they are chunky, but not smooth. 3. Add the onion, pistachios (less one tablespoon), pistachio oil, lime juice, pickled jalapeno, chopped cilantro, and salt. Fold the mixture together, being careful not to overwork the avocados. 4. Spoon the guacamole into a serving bowl, and garnish with the whole cilantro leaves, fresh jalapeno, and remaining tablespoon of pistachios. Serve with tortilla chips. Makes 4 servings. Suddenly She Sees KT Tunstall on why kissing girls wasn’t just a phase, admiring gender-fluid teens and channeling her masculinity

IS SHE OR ISN’T SHE? Truthfully, KT Tunstall understands the confusion regarding her sexuality – she’s responsible for it, after all. Tunstall, whose breakthrough song, “Suddenly I See,” became every dreamer’s anthem after it was prominently featured in The Devil Wears Prada, opened up about those rumors – and why kissing girls was “a really important part of my formative years” – on the heels of her latest album, KIN. p

Q A

How do you explain your big lesbian following? Listen, I’ve been super well aware of that from day one and have been so grateful for it. How did you become aware? From day one of releasing an album where I have fucking rainbow suspenders on! (Laughs) The British album cover for Eye to the Telescope was an homage to Patti Smith’s Horses album and I loved Mork & Mindy too, and so we didn’t think about it. It wasn’t me pretending to be gay, but I’m on the front of my album with these bright rainbow suspenders on. All the gay community thought I was gay – and they still think I’m gay! They’re just waiting for me to figure it out. Have you figured it out? Not yet! (Laughs) Listen, I am absolutely all about no boundaries and no labels. I’m gender fluid. (Laughs) Is that how you’d describe your sexuality? No, I wouldn’t. I am hetero, but you know, I’ve certainly – I did theater studies at college for Christ’s sake; of course I had fun with girls. It was weird in that community not to. And I get the feeling that it’s weird now for people to be kind of hung up about it – certainly in younger people I’ve met, which is such a beautiful shift. There are amazing people spearheading that, like Cara Delevingne, Kristen Stewart and and Eliot Sumner – she’s fucking awesome. It’s not even really an issue (for them), and I’m so glad. How do those people inspire you? I look at them as someone from the older generation and I just am so relieved that there isn’t as much angst. I feel less angst in this new generation of young people. It feels that there are less and less shackles on young people to adhere to old norms and

34

September 15, 2016

that inspires me just to be brave in everyday life and to honor how confident and self-assured they are becoming at a much younger age than I did. I feel like I’m keeping up with teenage confidence here. Tell me about studying theater. I wanted to be an actress when I was younger, so I started in a theater group when I was 8 years old and started performing when I was quite young. By the time I was 15, I went on this really amazing theater course called Scottish Youth Theatre and it was the first time I left home. We were living in a kind of dorm room situation, and it was people who were into all sorts of music that I hadn’t been subjected to. I didn’t go to my first show until I was 15. I grew up at a very sheltered time in Scotland. What was your introduction to the gay community then? It was during that time when I went to live in Glasgow. I had lived in St. Andrews – very, very straight up academic. When I went over to Glasgow for the theater course, many of the lecturers were gay, and it wasn’t that it was surprising – I wasn’t shocked by it. It was much more that I realized that there was this whole world of life that I hadn’t known about. And there was definitely a very open attitude: If you like this person, then kiss them and that’s completely normal. That’s how fucking life should be, quite frankly. Why on earth would anyone have any problem with someone enjoying themselves? It doesn’t make any sense. And you were kissing girls then. Would you call that a phase? No; I think it would be disrespectful to call it a phase. It was part of life. It was learning about love and learning about lust and desire and sexuality and becoming an adult and experiencing

ENTERTAINMENT people. It was a really important part of my formative years. What’s interesting now is the gender fluidity issue, I think. That’s really exciting and something that I just personally would relate to much more had that been talked about when I was 17, 18. That’s what I would be leaning my ear into because, I mean, when I get on stage something quite masculine happens to me. I think this is also why people have questioned my sexuality. There’s definitely a kind of masculine energy, and I’ve always felt that way and that comes through me when I perform. I think it’s also playing a guitar! (Laughs) I feel like I have a cock! The guitar is basically like a strap-on. But then it depends how you play it, because I don’t know if Joni Mitchell felt that way. There’s definitely something that happens when I take to the stage, and it’s definitely much more prevalent than when I’m walking around buying eggs in the supermarket. (Laughs) I read a really great article with Eliot Sumner – Sting’s daughter – and I was quite envious thinking, “Wow, imagine being in my youth and it not really being an issue what gender you are,” because I always felt so tomboy. I grew up with brothers, and when I was younger I always had lots of male friends – mostly male friends. Actually, now, I have mostly female friends, and I think that I’ve kind of inhabited being a woman. I really love my femininity, but I felt like a stranger to it before. Which track on the album do think your LGBT fans might enjoy most? Maybe “Hard Girls” because that song is really about being vulnerable and not wearing an entire tub of hair gel on your head and all the makeup in the world and just being you, authentically you and not worrying. That song is totally meant to be a celebration about just fucking

not worrying too much about that stuff and letting people get to know you for who you are. What went through your head the first time you heard “Suddenly I See” in Devil Wears Prada? I was floored! As an artist, having your song used in a movie – you never get the whole song used and you never get your song used without there being dialogue over the top of it. And the whole three-and-a-half minutes of the opening of the movie is just my song, unadulterated! I remember my manager saying to me, “Enjoy this because it’s probably never going to happen again.” How did you feel about Hillary Clinton using “Suddenly I See” as her 2008 campaign song? It was great. I’m not American, I can’t vote, but I would always want to see the Democrats in power, so I was really happy to be able to contribute in any way to try and make that happen. I don’t know what (a campaign) song would sound like right now – it’s crazy times. I wouldn’t even know where to start. It’s like watching a game show. It’s like watching The Hunger Games or something. It’s just completely bonkers. But seeing a woman in the position of President of the United States would be an amazing thing. And Donald Trump – many artists aren’t appreciating the fact that he’s been using their songs. Yeah, he used one of my songs. I can’t remember where but someone tweeted that he used it. It was just fucking abhorrent and it just makes you want to have a wash. I want my work nowhere near that disgusting man. When I listen to your latest album, it sounds like a kindred spirit to your debut, Eye to the Telescope. I hear similarities between the two. Me too! It feels like the spiritu-

al follow up to the first album. It feels like it’s taken three records to write my second album! And it’s not to disrespect the other albums, because I love them and they’ve been really important and I’m really proud of them. But I think from a personal point of view there’s a lot of familiarity in terms of where I was at when I wrote this record, where I’m really very unselfconscious and I totally love the music and I’m just having fun. I think it’s taken me a long time to get away from that incredibly powerful gaze of millions of people looking to see what you’re going to do next. It’s hard. When did you start feeling “that gaze”? I think after the success of the first record. Making the second record, I was just fucking exhausted. I was so tired. I’d been literally touring solid for two years and you’re in the studio trying to make a record and it’s just like…

you’re just burned. And there’s a low possibility of you being able to make the best follow-up record that you can. I actually really loved that second record; I was just bummed because I wanted to do it garage-band style live and the record company really didn’t want to do that, so we ended up making a slicker record than I was intending on making. But you know, I’m proud of it. I think I listen back and I love it, but I was definitely feeling the effects of becoming famous. It was very weird. Funny enough, (this album) was made in quite a similar way (to the first album). It was made in Tony Hoffer’s studio and he has this really cute, cool DIY homemade studio and – same as the first record – I played a lot of the stuff myself and I think that was important for me, for this record. I put just as much of my undiluted self into this record because that’s where the joy comes from. nn September 15, 2016

Jefferson Starship consists of most of the members of psychedelic rock band Jefferson Airplane and will be performing most of that band’s classic hits, including “Somebody to Love” and the trippy “White Rabbit.” The event offers a “Meet and Greet” which would include exclusive use of the lounge, complimentary alcohol, and a selection of hot and cold hors d’oeuvres and desserts. 6:30 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW Fifth Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.

WEDNESDAY 9/21 @ 7:00PM BB&T Center Dozens of South Florida’s best-loved restaurants gather in the BB&T Center to offer up their top epicurean delights and drinks. E.A.T. stands for “Edible, Artisanal, and Tasteful”—concepts that each restaurant will be trying to master this evening. Participants include The Rusty Hook Tavern, Buddha Sky Bar and Buddha Garden, Sea Level Restaurant and Ocean Bar, Oceans 234, Bravo Ristorante, Joe’s Seafood Shack, The Brass Tap, Boatyard, Shooters Waterfront, and Ceviche by the Sea. 7:00 p.m. BB&T Center. 2555 NW 136th Ave. Sunrise. 33323.
