hile hitting the town and drinking with friends until the sun comes up can be fun, it is also exhausting. If you’re looking to Netflix and chill, we’ve come up with a short list of 5 movies you should check out when you’re in a mood to stay on your sofa and just relax.
Stéphane Rideau owns the screen as Vassili, an aging male escort who holds onto his youth through his younger boyfriend who shares the same business practices. Together, the two form a twisted love connection in a codependent relationship that is fueled by theft, violence and murder. However, when their past catches up with them, they are forced to flea from Paris and form a new life of sorts. bBEST PART: An eye opening fetish sex scene
1. STRANGER BY THE LAKE Graphic sex scenes, public nudity and an intriguing story line are the elements that make Stranger By the Lake a must-see. The 2013 French film centers around nude sunbathers, unrequited love and murder (yes, seriously). The movie stars Pierre Deladonchamps (Franck) and Patrick d’Assumçao who does a masterful job as Henri, a torn man suffering from the heartbreak being dumped by his girlfriend while dealing with the jealousy of seeing Franck fall in love with someone else before his eyes. Stranger By the Lake does a great job of walking the line between desire and fear while keeping you glued to the screen with sex filled scenes. bBEST PART: Outdoor Sex
4. FREE FALL This German drama film will be one that you’ll end up recommending to other Netflix lovers in your circle. The film stars Hanno Koffler as a police officer who falls head over heels in love with his colleague, Max Riemelt. Free Fall will take you on a ride of bisexuality, love against the odds and family values. Watch as the two navigate their awkward relationship in the face of coworkers and family members who disapprove. We bet that you won’t be able to watch this movie just once. bBEST PART: The fact that Max Riemelt is crazy hot.
2. TANGERINE Tangerine tells a hilarious story of a Transgender prostitute who is in love with her pimp. After doing time in jail, she quickly finds out that he has been cheating on her. This news sends her into a crazed search around Los Angeles, CA for the girl that he is rumored to be seeing behind her back. Along the way, side stories of a broken family and dreams of superstardom will pull at your heartstrings. The film stars transgender actress Kitana Kiki Rodriguez (Sin-Dee Rella) who will quickly become one of your favorite characters. bBEST PART: The entire movie was filmed with three iPhone 5s smartphones.

5. PARIS IS BURNING This documentary got an honorable mention of sorts in our list of the 11 LGBT – themed movies on Netflix worth watching last year. Paris is Burning gives an inside look into the gay “house culture” in New York City in the late 1980’s. The film will introduce you to everything from transgender teens at the time to some of the personalities that ushered in a new area of drag balls. Trust us, this documentary isn’t only entertaining but it is also impactful and educational. bBEST PART: Venus Xtravaganza

It was 6 years ago when Mike Verdugo started Bodytek, a high intensity interval training program for those interested in losing weight or staying cut. Back then, the former gay cop and interior designer was just embarking on a period of his life where he could focus on fitness, the one thing that he has always loved most.

n October 1st, 2016, Verdugo and his team is set to open his 4th location, this one the biggest yet, in the Wynwood area of Miami.
A few weeks ahead of its grand opening, we caught up with Verdugo. He reflected on his humble beginning, changes that are ahead for the gym and shed some insight on his past as a gay police officer. I read that you’ve been working out since you were 13, what advice would you give to someone who has never worked out and wants to get started? My advice is go at your own pace, that’s what I tell everyone. Some people walk in and I walk up to them and I tell them don’t be intimidated. There’s no competition, just go at your own pace. You started Bodytek in your garage? What do you remember most about that time? I remember feeling the love. I had a lot of people coming to me from Wilton Manors, Boca and all over to take my classes. I was way out west in Davie at the time and within in a few months I had like 30-40 cars at my place. So this is when I knew I needed to find a new space. So your space in Davie opened first, how long after did you open your second location? 14 SEPTEMBER 22, 2016
It was a month later. It was kind of crazy. I had so many people coming to me from the Wilton Manors area so I thought it would be a great choice. I just went ahead and went against everybody’s advice. People were telling me not to open another location so soon but I did and it worked out. Why did you decide to open another location in Wynwood? We’ve been in Wynwood for two and a half years and we’ve outgrown that space. The one in Miami is our flagship store so that is what they are all going to look like. The two others are more warehouse style studios. How will the new space be different from the studios you have now? We decked it out. We moved literally 5 blocks down the street but we tripled the size of it. What’s different is we will be getting rid of our treadmills. We are going to have a new piece of equipment called SPARC, its’ made by Cybex and it’s really amazing. We have a lot of people that come from Orange Theory because they hate running on a treadmill. I mean I hate running on a treadmill. It’s a great workout nonimpact. In addition to this new amazing machine, what else are you changing up? All of the equipment that’s going in there will be brand new. The rowers will be more durable and you can do more things
BRIEFENCOUNTER with them. The bikes will be new as well. Everything will be top-of-the-line equipment. We will have 5 of everything in the studio. 5 battle ropes, 5 dance stations and everything will be in groups of 5. What has been the biggest change in the company over the past year? We just became a legally franchised company about two months ago, meaning we can sell Bodytek as a franchise. Since we launched that via social media we’ve gotten a lot of response. We are looking to open up 30 plus studios in the next year. Previously, you said that you did not want to franchise because you said the gym is personal to you. What made you change your mind? It has been in the making for years and I wasn’t ready yet. I needed to get it fine-tuned to where I knew it would run as a well-oiled machine. I have the right people in place now where I feel comfortable letting go. With franchising you still have some control. It’s still going to be a Bodytek workout and we create all the workouts for the franchisers. If you had to choose one, what location would you say is your personal favorite? I would have to say Davie. Davie is my baby. That’s where I started. You’ve been a police officer, you’ve done interior designing and now you’re a gym guru of sorts. What phase of your life has been the toughest? I would have to say being a police officer. It was tough and I had to deal with homophobia within the department as well. Back then it was difficult. A lot of cops weren’t out so the fact that I was made things tough. There were some cops who were okay with it and some who were not. Lately there have been some reports about discrimination in the Wilton Manors Police Department relating to gay police officers… I haven’t heard anything honestly. I don’t know what’s going on in that world. It’s sad. I did a complaint against one of my sergeants. I reached out to City Hall and they were kind of in bed with the police department if that makes sense to you. It never went anywhere so that was kind of frustrating. It’s hard to get help. Where do you see yourself in 3-5 years? I love fitness. I want to say that I would stay with this for a long time, but you never know what the future will bring, you know? According to Verdugo, there will be classes on October 1st in the morning to usher in the new era of Bodytek. Then at night, the gym and all of its supporters will kick back and have a formal party.

The Man With the Magic Scissors
At 41 years old, Lorenzo Littlefield is at peace. From his posture to his smile, it is clear that he is more than just content with his career, but he is happy‌ genuinely. In 2011, he purchased Salon Scissorium with his business partner and friend, Geoffrey Farrell. At the time, the salon was already a Wilton Manors staple. It was a salon with a name that few could pronounce easily but one that many knew and respected. 5 years later, Salon Scissorium is thriving more than ever. In between highlights and haircuts, the tattooed man at the helm took some time out to chat with us about his background and the salon’s rise to prominence.

ONTHECOVER How long has the salon been in business? It has been in Wilton Manors for 17 years. My business partner and I bought it 5 years ago this month actually. I’ve been working here since the day they opened. The previous owners decided they wanted to sell the business and I couldn’t let something that was like my home go… so we decided to purchase it. Tell me a bit about your background, did you always know that this was something you wanted to do? I kind of figured it out the minute I walked into a hair salon when I was probably like 17 or 18 years old. The energy, the artistry and the interaction with people just kind of caught my eye. It’s a fun, energetic atmosphere. Would you say that you had natural talent? Absolutely not (laughs). I went into it and I had never picked up a flat iron, curling iron or anything. So when I went to school it was all-new to me and I just kind of fell in love with it. What was school like for you then… given that you didn’t have natural talent? Yeah it was because I had never done haircuts or hair coloring or that type of stuff. So going into it when I started I was the only guy in school and there were like 80 women in my class. It was New England and it was a very rare thing to find a male hairdresser. You’ve been doing this for so long, what would you say is your biggest inspiration? It would have to be the smile and the look on people’s faces when you give them something that they ask for. When something fits with their personality and their style it’s just fulfilling. It’s just kind of pushing the limits of shape and texture with the client. I love every part of what I do but the interaction with guests and making them feel better about themselves. What do you think you still need to improve on? I think if you don’t continue to learn and educate yourself it’s a problem. Styles are changing, trends are changing all the time and you have to continue to educate yourself. Tell me a bit about the salon, what is it like now? We have a total of 6 people in the salon. We have a barber who does face shaves and haircuts and the regular barber style of cutting for all of our clients. He’s amazing. We have somebody who has been here for 10 years, some longer than me and we have educators on our staff that teach other stylists as well. The salon has great energy. Do you have more male or female clients usually? Honestly it is 50/50. We get a clot of clients who all just want quality service. What would you say is the biggest difference between the barbershop experience and the salon experience? Ah, I think the salon experience is definitely more relaxing. 26 SEPTEMBER 22, 2016
What we’ve done, since we are located in Wilton Manors, we integrated both of those aspects for men and women. It’s all about what the establishment makes it. We do take walk-ins but we are by an appointment only type of salon. It’s all about relaxation you know? Give them a glass of wine, hang out and chat with everybody. What is the hardest part of being an owner? Being an artist and stylist… when you have to take that artist hat off and put on the boss hat and make sure everyone is doing the right thing. That’s the hardest thing… learning how to switch of hey I am your buddy and we are having fun but here’s what’s going on that affects the business that is coming through the door. How do you feel about the state of the business now? We are pretty busy. The business is consistently growing and it has been for the last 5 years. We get a lot of support from the community and other businesses in the area you know? We love that about them! We have business partners in our community that refer people to us and we refer people to them. Some of them are other salons and barbershops even. What would you like to see the salon evolve into? You know we are constantly changing. We have some things that we are always working on. Obviously we would love more business and we would love more customers coming in and that type of thing. But mostly, it’s just about continuing to do what we’ve been doing. We want to continue to focus on making it that neighborhood salon. Why do you think so many people love Salon Scissorium so much? There’s no pretense and people don’t have to feel uncomfortable when they come in here. It’s all family, we all talk to each other’s customers and that’s the main goal of it. We all like to make money but that’s not the driving force behind it. What other projects have you been taking on? I educate outside of the salon. We are actually doing haircuts of the homeless next week Friday with the color company that I work with. We keep trying to give back to the community. There’s also a lot of travel to San Francisco, Atlanta and LA. I just never stop moving. How did you settle on a name? The previous owners actually came up with the name. It was like the scissors emporium, that type of thing. When we took over we contemplated changing the name to something else but it has been here for 17 years so we didn’t want to change it. It’s a staple. It has been here since Georgie’s alibi had a dirt parking lot. (laughs) To say that Littlefield has been at Salon Scissorium for a while is an understatement. But he isn’t stuck here. As his career continues to evolve, there’s just no place else he would rather be.

f there’s one aspect of traveling that most people dread, it’s packing. Set off too light and you run the risk of having to spring for extras while on vacay. Stuff your suitcase to the gills and you’ll need to make a date with a chiropractor when you get home—not to mention the potential baggage overcharges you may incur in the interim. To avoid both these scenarios, lifestyle expert Bob Caputo details his packing best practices for your next easy-breezy getaway.

Make a list
Ease up on the toiletries
of what to pack a few days in advance
To save space in your luggage—and to prevent a headache at airport security— leave more common toiletries at home. Most hotels provide everything you need to stay fresh and clean, and these items are included in the price you’ve already paid.
Avoid throwing half your closet into your bags in a last-minute frenzy. Give yourself at least 24 hours lead-time to start prepping your belongings so the essentials are covered and nothing is left behind. “Make a master list of the items you normally bring on trips—clothes, toiletries, computer and phone charger, medicines, workout gear and sunglasses,” Caputo suggests. “Print the list out and check off the items as you pack them.”

Plan your outfits
Instead of bringing paperback books to read, download electronic versions to your tablet or notebook. And download movies to watch when transportation boredom sets in. To save even more space, you could download them onto your phone.

When traveling, choose items wisely—and sparingly—so they can be mixed, matched and get more individual mileage. “You might want to bring all outfits that are black, for example; by using that black jacket with several outfits, you can pack less and still look great,” says Caputo. “Select accessories that also can be used with several outfits. Chances are nobody is going to see you every day and judge you if you repeat outfits.”
Make photocopies of important documents
You’ll never be stranded if you practice common sense. “Bring a photocopy of your driver’s license, passport and medical insurance cards in your carry-on,” Caputo advises. “Also, keep pictures of the documents on your phone. This way, if you lose them or if you’re robbed, you’ll still have your vital info.”

all is here and many of us are back to our non-stop chaotic routine of working 90 hours, binge eating takeout when we should actually be resting, and chugging caffeine to continue our hectic work schedule with minimal sleep. So when are we supposed to squeeze in any form of fitness with this mundane sleep deprived schedule? Here’s a routine that might work for you. No, it wont get you massive or jacked but it will help keep you stay in-shape and keep active when your fighting a #GayOnTheGo type of daily routine.
DAY 2 - Upper Body • 5 Minutes of stretching/warm-up • 5 minutes on the Elliptical at Level 8 or higher
You’ll need to push your limits with this routine every time. If it seems too easy, kick up the weights, repetition, or intensity in order to make it more challenging. Feel free to contact me if you want recommendations on additional modifications you can make to further intensify this workout. My contact info listed below. Additional note. The set repetition is a goal to hit. If you can easily hit the set repetition number with the correct form, you are not pushing yourself. Ideally, you should fall a few reps short, have to take a couple second pause, and bang out the rest. I also highly encourage you to attempt to make time to take at least one circuit class a week. This will help you better understand the level of intensity you should strive for. Many gyms have them available with your gym membership. A great example is Jillian Michaels BODYSHRED offered to CRUNCH members. Its a 30 minute full body circuit.
