In the wake of five suicides by gay teenagers in September, celebrities and politicians are participating in a YouTube video campaign launched by Seattlebased sex columnist, Dan Savage to help kids understand that they are not the only ones who had to endure bullying and harassment growing up. “There were no gay people in my family and no openly gay people at my school, but I was picked on because I liked musicals and I was obviously gay and some kids didn't like that and I did get harassed,” Savage said in the candid, 8minute video. Since Sept. 21, the YouTube channel, which can be found at http://www.you tube.com/user/itgetsbetterproject, has had more than 1.4 million visitors viewing the more than 1,000 videos that people have submitted. The project was sparked by the recent suicides of Raymond Chase, 19; Tyler Clementi, 18; Billy Lucas, 15; Asher Brown, 13 and Seth Walsh, 13. Some of the celebrities participating include: Ellen DeGeneres, Neil Patrick

Gay Adoption By BOB KECSKEMETY The Florida Department of Children and Families announced on Tuesday that it will not appeal the ruling of the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision to overturn Florida’s ban on gay adoption. The lower court ruled on September 22 that Florida’s 33-year old ban was unconstitutional; however, the ruling could have been appealed to the Florida Supreme Court. The original suit was filed

by the ACLU on behalf of Martin Gill who, along with his partner, wished to adopt their two foster children. Late last year, Miami-Dade County Judge Cindy Lederman decided that Gill could adopt the children. The decision was then appealed to the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals by the DCF. That court considered the case for 13 months prior to arriving at its September ruling.

Harris, Tim Gunn from “Project Runway,” Chris Colfer from “Glee” and blogger Perez Hilton. “Nine out of 10 gay teenagers experience bullying and harassment at school and gay teens are four times likelier to attempt suicide,” Savage said. “Many LGBT kids who do kill themselves live in rural areas, exurbs and suburban areas, places with no gay organizations or services for queer kids.” Some within the GLBT community are criticizing the project. “However, if we keep telling suicidal people that their situation will ‘get better’ without actually taking any steps to improve it — if we don't provide support and medical care for people with depression; if we don't help people who are being abused to find a safe place; if we don't make sure that the systematic, community-wide abuse of GLBT youth is eliminated — then belief alone can wear thin,” writes Sady Doyle, a freelance writer and blogger. Judge Halts “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” By BOB KECSKEMETY U.S. District Court Judge Virginia Phillips ordered an injunction on Tuesday ordering officials to no longer enforce “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the controversial policy concerning gays serving in the U.S. Military. The landmark ruling effectively puts an end to the 17year old ban on gays serving in the military. The Federal Government now

has 60 days to appeal her ruling but has not announced whether or not it will do so. In a written statement, Judge Phillips ordered: “Defendants United States of America and the Secretary of Defense immediately to suspend and discontinue any investigation, or discharge, separation, or other proceeding, that may

news Man Beaten at Stonewall Inn NEW YORK, NY: Since June 1969, the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village area of New York City has been considered the birthplace of the modern gay rights movement. Today, it’s now the location of one of the latest gay Ben Carver bashings. Ben Carver, 34, from Washington D.C. is a writer/art director who traveled to NYC with his boyfriend when they visited the iconic bar on October 3. Carter went to the rest room when he was viciously attacked. In his blog (bencarveronline.com), he said that when he went inside the small restroom, two young men were inside. Carter said he was asked if he was gay and he responded that it was a gay bar. The other person, who was urinating at the time responded, “don’t pee next to me, faggot.” He was then asked if he had some money to which Carter replied that he didn’t have any money, just a bank card. The two strangers then blocked the exit ,and one of the men hit Carver in the face. The two then wrestled Carter to the ground where they hit him in the head numerous times. Carter punched back and was able to break free and reached for a beer bottle he saw on the floor and threw it at his attackers. When they dodged the flying bottle, it allowed Carter enough room where he was able to open the restroom door. He ran out, bleeding from the head and stumbled to the pool table followed by his attackers. From this point, he said, the details are fuzzy, but he was helped by other people in the bar while the two attackers escaped in the confusion. 911 was called, and Carter received three stitches above the right eye. Two men were apprehended, and Carter was able to identify his alleged attackers through a line up. Arrested were Matthew Francis, 21 and Christopher Orlando, 17 both from Staten Island.H

I am sure there will be a couple of legislative fruit loops there in the audience.” In response Brown’s comments, Equality North Carolina

announced that for every donation the organization receives, they will send Brown a box of Froot Loops breakfast cereal, delivered to his office complete with a personal message. Over 250 boxes of Froot Loops were delivered within the first few hours of the announcement.H

Iowa Governor Defends State’s Gay Marriage Stance DES MOINES, IA: Governor Chet Culver stood up for his state's gay marriage law during a debate with his Republican rival, Terry Branstad. Asked whether same-sex marriage Iowa Gov. Chet Carver has had an impact on the state, Culver insisted, "It has not had an effect on the state of Iowa, other than allowing people to make their own decisions. ...We should not write discrimination into the Iowa Constitution." Republican Terry Branstad disagreed and insisted that Iowa voters should be given a chance to vote on a constitutional amendment prohibiting gay marriage. Same-sex marriage was approved by the state's Supreme Court in 2009.H

Riot Breaks Out at Serbian Pride Parade BELGRADE, SERBIA: At least 100 people were injured when a riot broke out at Serbia’s first gay pride parade since 2001. Hundreds of right-wing protesters attacked the parade participants including the police officers who were present to protect pro-gay activists.Thousands of people attended an anti-gay protest in Belgrade the day before the pride parade. The police estimated there were up to 10,000 people protesting, and the Serbian government said that there was up to $1.3 million in damages done during the riots.H

“Modern Family” Honored LOS ANGELES, CA: The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), honored the Emmy Award-winning ABC comedy “Modern Family” at the Respect Awards in Los Angeles on Friday, October 8. The series, which recently began its second season, focuses on a diverse suburban family, including a gay couple with an adopted Asian daughter. It won the 2010 Emmy Award for Best Comedy Series. "I do have the same sort of mixed feeling, in the light of everything that's happened," noted Jesse Tyler Ferguson of Modern Family, who is openly gay. "However, I think an event like this echoes the sentiment that we need to change. This cannot continue happening." The Emmy-nominated Ferguson, 34, said he was "very bullied" in school.H

DCF Won’t Appeal Gay Adoption Ruling

“DADT” continued from Page 1

Nadine Smith

GAY ADOPTION continued from Page 1 A spokesperson for the DCF stated that due to the 3rd Circuit Court’s three-judge unanimous ruling and the initial ruling by Judge Lederman, an appeal to the Supreme Court would have a less than limited chance of a different outcome. The DCF also stated that they considered the ruling to be statewide and that the department’s adoption applications were being revised to remove the question concerning sexual orientation. Florida Governor Charlie Crist had also previously announced that he would not enforce the anti-gay adoption law and had no plan to appeal on behalf of the State. However, Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum, who has opposed gay adoption in

the past, may still appeal the ruling to the higher court. Nadine Smith, Executive Director of Equality Florida said in a written statement that “It's clear they've done what they are supposed to do — they've put the needs of the children first. There are no credible voices left to defend this ban. It hurts children, and it appeals to fear, lies and stereotypes.” Opponents to lifting the ban said they were disappointed by the latest ruling and hoped the Attorney General would continue to defend the gay adoption ban. It is currently uncertain what the Attorney General’s office will do, but a statement released from the office said, “We appreciate the announcement and look forward to a conversation with DCF about what the next actions will be.” H

have been commenced under the ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell’ Act, or pursuant to 10 U.S.C. §654 or its implementing regulations, on or prior to the date of this Judgment.” The original case was filed in 2004 by the Log Cabin Republican Club, the nation’s largest LGBT Republican organization. The Log Cabin filed their case on behalf of several decorated officers including Air Force Major Michael Almy. Almy had been deployed to Iraq three times and accused his commanding officer of attempting to force him to admit that he was a homosexual after another service member searched Almy’s private email without his permission. Almy fought his discharge for 16 months prior to agreeing to an honorable discharge. In September, Judge Phillips said that banning homosexuals from the military did not affect military readiness and that the ban on gays serving in the military had a “direct and deleterious” effect on the military. She fur-

ther concluded that DADT violated the 1st Amendment. President Obama, while campaigning for President, said he was opposed to ban on gays openly serving in the military and would work to do away with the policy. While President, Obama has continued to contend that he opposes “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” but has said that Congress, not the courts, should lift the ban. On Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that the court ruling demonstrated that “time is running out on the policy of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’ This is a policy that is going to end.” However, also on Wednesday, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said that abruptly ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” would have enormous consequences and that Congress should decide the law but only after the Department of Defense completes its study on the matter due out by the end of this year. He said that dropping the ban requires careful preparation and a lot of training, or it would have enormous consequences for the troops. H

BULLYING, continued from Page 1 the project at Queer Watch. “The rhetoric about being accepted by family encourages folks to come out — even when coming out isn’t a safe idea,” Melisa writes. “There is no infrastructure to catch you when your family reacts poorly. There is no truly benevolent queer family, waiting to catch you, ready to sacrifice so you can thrive. For a lot of folks, coming out doesn’t only mean that your parents will promise to hate your lovers — it means violence, homelessness, abuse.” Even in the wake of criticism, President Barack Obama’s administration is getting behind the project and pushing the message that bullying in high schools, middle schools and colleges needs to stop. “No young person should have to endure a life of relentless taunts and harassment just because they’re gay,” said Obama Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett during the Human Rights Campaign’s annual national dinner. “On behalf of President Obama, I want to make clear that this administration is firmly committed to working with you and other advocates. For we all have to ensure that we are creating an environment in our schools, our communities, and our country, that is safe for every person, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.” The Safe Schools Improvement Act and the Student NonDiscrimination Act were introduced in Congress in 2009, but lawmakers have not been in a rush to tackle the issue. “The Department of Health and Human Services has announced an unprecedented National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention,” Jarrett said. “This alliance brings together a wide range of public and private partners. And it’s going to make sure people have access to help, and to resources when they are in crisis. One of its specific goals is preventing suicide in at-risk groups, including LGBT youth.” H

You’ve Got “Sex” – Online Sexual Addiction By SAM KNEW, MSW The internet is everywhere – our homes, work, phone, even free-of-charge at public libraries. That is why the nearly 4-million online users who identify themselves as online sexual addicts face a daily battle. It’s the internet’s accessibility and affordability that enables this form of addiction. This over-exposure of graphic and gratuitous sexual material

can generate such an unhealthy attitude towards sex. Like most addicts, these individuals are capable of acting out with life-altering consequences. Users compulsively access the “net” to download sexual images, visit sexually-oriented chartrooms and participate in live sexual video acts – usually involving some form of masturbation. Many become isolated by shame, which perpetuates the addiction. Although defining this form of addiction may be challenging due to the degrees of use, most professionals will identify it as an addiction when it becomes unmanageable or all consuming, costing users their own reality. Cyber addicts have been known to go online for hours or literally days at a

time, risking their relationships, job and health. The book “In the Shadows of the Net: Breaking Free of Compulsive Online Sexual Behavior” outlines five groups of users. The groups range from appropriate to inappropriate. Appropriate users include those who are capable of accessing sexual material online, even using it to enhance their real sex lives and maintain a healthy, expressive sex life in their real world. Inappropriate groups include those who are at risk of becoming addicts, using the internet for exhibitionism or illegal sexual acts such as meeting under-age sex partners. They tend to lack the ability to express their sexual desires in the real world, yet they are still in control of the image they project to the world (much like a functioning alcoholic). The most severe group is made up of individuals who have some form of sexual addiction, and the internet is simply a tool in that addiction. They are detached from the real world and put themselves in numerous forms of high-risk situations in all aspects of their life. These users risk their jobs by viewing pornography at work. In addition, they jeopiStock.com ardize relationships, by carrying on online fantasy relationships, some actually coming to fruition. This compulsion also takes its toll on the users’ physical and mental health, resulting in forms of depression and anxiety. Like with most addicts of any other addiction, users must learn to live with their disorder, as they are never truly cured. The goal is to create an environment where addicts can communicate their desires and even fulfill them in healthy ways. Users need to understand the drive of their compulsion and learn to reconstruct their perception of sexual expression. Most importantly, they need to spend less time in their virtual world and more time learning to cope in their reality.H

The Deafening Silence: In the Closet of Suicide By JOSHUA PLANT The recent tragic death of Tyler Clementi, an 18 year-old Rutgers University Freshman whose sexual tryst was broadcast across the Internet leading to his subsequent suicidal jump off the George Washington Bridge, has gay activists and advocates screaming for a call to action. This story is not that of one, but of many. Hazing mainly happens in school, especially in college, when many LGBT individuals are discovering their sexual orientation. In the case of Clementi, his unspoken sexuality was exposed twice across the Internet, which begs the question: would this have happened if he were straight? As someone who has been personally persecuted by people of the likes of Clementi’s accused roommate, Dharun Ravi, I tend to think not. Straight people have sex on TV, in magazines and in movies every day; gay sexuality is still not mainstream. Whether the actions of the college students were out of curiosity, or just a sophomoric prank or bigotry, remains to be answered. In high schools and colleges across the nation, kids and young adults are forced into silence for fear of retaliation. Unless a person of authority personally intercepts malicious behavior unto another student, silence follows. It takes the death of someone to instill change in schools or a community, but these changes are often short-lived and wildly ineffective, since teachers and others are often too passive to defend the meek. Now, another person is dead. A talented and gifted musician died because of torment inflicted over his sexual orientation. If being gay had to be personified from a state of being into an emotional context, it would be love. So, in essence these people were tortured, and in some cases killed, because they found the ability to love. This isn’t a legislative prob-

Q:

lem; it is one of society as a whole – blind-eye syndrome. How many more people need to die before something is done? The Matthew Shepard Law helps, but it doesn’t do enough as a preventative measure. At my high school in Massachusetts, our Gay-Straight Alliance wrote and enacted an anti-harassment policy to reduce the level of violence and hate speech at the school. This policy was left practically unenforced until the death of Phoebe Prince, which lead to an anti-bullying state law enacted in her honor. This law was written in blood, just like the Shepard law.

The Facts: • 45% of gay males and 20% of lesbians report having experienced verbal harassment and/or physical violence as a result of their sexual orientation during high school. • 42% of adolescent lesbians and 34% of adolescent gay males who have suffered physical attack also attempt suicide.

Politicians, such as Tom Emmer, the current Republican candidate for governor in Minnesota, a candidate financially supported by major corporations such as Target, Best Buy and 3M, feels that our society does not need bullying laws. In fact, during one of his campaign speeches, he said that if he were elected governor, he would veto the “Safe Schools for All” bill, a bill that includes protection for students bullied because of sexual orientation, gender, race, religion and disability.

Breast Cancer Risks & Detection By BOB KECSKEMETY

The Earlier the Better Most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save many thousands of lives each year, and that many more lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests. Following the American Cancer Society's guidelines for the early detection of breast cancer improves the chances that breast cancer can be diagnosed at an early stage and treated successfully.

Risk Factors Having a risk factor, or even several, does not mean that you will get the disease. Most women who have one or more breast cancer risk factors never develop the disease, while many women with breast cancer have no apparent risk factors (other than being a woman and growing older). Even when a woman with risk factors develops breast cancer, it is hard to know just how much these factors may have contributed to her cancer. Risk factors you cannot change: Simply being a woman is the main risk factor for developing breast cancer. Your risk of developing breast cancer increases as you get older. About 5% - 10% of breast cancer cases are thought to be hereditary. Women whose close blood relatives have had breast

cancer have a higher risk. A woman with cancer in one breast has a 3 to 4 fold increased risk of developing a new cancer. Denser breast tissue which has more glandular tissue and less fatty tissue. Women diagnosed with certain benign breast conditions may have an increased risk. Women who have had more menstrual cycles because they started menstruating at an early age and/or went through menopause at a later age have a slightly higher risk of breast cancer. Women, who as children or young adults, had radiation therapy to the chest area as treatment for another cancer. Women who have been exposed to Diethylstilbestrol have a slightly increased risk. Lifestyle-related factors: Women who have not had children or who had their first child after age 30. Women using oral contraceptives. Using estrogen before menopause. Consumption of alcohol is clearly linked to an increased risk as does being overweight or obese.

Detection Mammogram: The American Cancer Society recommends women age 40 and older should have a mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. Recent evidence has confirmed that mammograms offer substantial benefit for women in their 40s. Women can feel confident about the benefits associated with regular mammograms for finding

cancer early. However, mammograms also have limitations. A mammogram can miss some cancers, and it may lead to follow up of findings that are not cancer. Clinical breast exam: Women in their 20s and 30s should have a clinical breast exam (CBE) as part of a regular health exam by a health professional preferably every 3 years. Starting at age 40, women should have a CBE by a health professional every year. For this exam, you undress from the waist up. The health professional will first look at the breasts for abnormalities in size or shape, or changes in the skin of the breasts or nipple. Then, using the pads of the fingers, the examiner will gently palpate the breasts. The CBE is a good time for women who don't know how to examine their breasts to learn the right way to do it from their health care professionals and should ask their doctor or nurse to teach them and watch the technique. Breast awareness and self-exam: Beginning in their 20s, women should be told about the benefits and limitations of breast self-exam (BSE). Women should be aware of how their breasts normally look and feel and report any new breast changes to a health professional as soon as they are found. Finding a breast change does not necessarily mean there is a cancer. A woman can notice changes by knowing how her breasts normally look and feel and feeling her breasts for changes (breast awareness),

or by choosing to use a step-by-step approach and using a specific schedule to examine her breasts. Signs and symptoms of breast cancer: Although widespread use of screening mammograms has increased the number of breast cancers found before they cause any symptoms, some breast cancers are not found by mammograms, either because the test was not done or because even under ideal conditions mammograms do not find every breast cancer. The most common sign of breast cancer is a new lump or mass. A mass that is painless, hard, and has irregular edges is more likely to be cancerous, but breast cancers can be tender, soft, or rounded. For this reason, it is important that any new mass, lump, or breast change is checked by a health care professional with experience in diagnosing breast diseases. Other possible signs of breast cancer include: Swelling of all or part of a breast (even if no distinct lump is felt), skin irritation or dimpling, breast or nipple pain, nipple retraction, redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin or a nipple discharge other than breast milk. Sometimes a breast cancer can spread to underarm lymph nodes and cause a lump or swelling there, even before the original tumor in the breast tissue is large enough to be felt. Swollen lymph nodes should also be reported to your doctor.

Verdugo Supporters to Rally for ENDA By BOB KECSKEMETY Former openly-gay Hollywood Police officer Michael “Mikey” Verdugo (who charged that he was unfairly terminated by the City of Hollywood), along with his pro bono attorney, George Castrataro, Esq., and a team of community leaders, will hold an important rally to keep attention focused on Mr. Verdugo’s discrimination case and further explain why support for passage of the Employment NonDiscrimination Act (ENDA) is so important. The rally will be held on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at noon, prior to the City Commission’s Meeting at 1:00 p.m. at the City of Hollywood City Hall, 2600 Hollywood Blvd., in Hollywood. The rally comes in the wake of the August 12 hearing in Tampa when The State of Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission unanimously upheld a negotiated Settlement Agreement in the Verdugo discrimination case and allowed Mr. Verdugo to retain his State certification as a law enforcement officer. “It was an important victory and first step in vindicating Mikey, but there’s a long way yet to go,” Castrataro stated. Castrataro’s argument had prevailed that the City of Hollywood’s intervention into the previously negotiated settlement was inappropriate and improper.

The rally precedes a Court Hearing scheduled on November 30, 2010 relevant to Mr. Verdugo’s ongoing discrimination case against the City of Hollywood. Mr. Verdugo is still fighting to be reinstated in his job. “In Florida, employment and advancement are still hindered by prejudice. Too many people, both straight and gay, do not realize that it’s still possible to fire someone without cause!” Mr. Castrataro said. “Mikey’s fight illustrates the need to pass the ENDA without further delay. His plight serves as a powerful reminder that discrimination is real and must end. Passage of the bill would have far-reaching effects.” Castrataro has long been active in working with the Broward County Commission on local human rights issues. H

Start of the Playoffs: The End of an Era By RYAN DIXON The Divisional Series are now over and the League Championship Series are set. After sweeping the Twins, the Yankees look ready to continue their dominance against the Rangers in the American League Championship who dispatched the Rays in five games. On the heels of the second no-hitter in baseball history, The Phillies will look back to Roy Holliday to be their catalyst against the San Fran Giants in the National League. I look forward to seeing a rematch of last year’s World Series between the Yanks and Phillies. Clearly these two teams have found the winning combinations in their respective leagues, but money won’t buy the Yanks a title this year. The Phillies will win on the shoulders of Doc Holliday and the bat of Ryan Howard. The real story, or ‘drama’ you could say, surrounding this year’s playoffs has been the pending retirement of Atlanta’s manager Bobby Cox. Cox has been the skipper of the Braves since midway through the 1990 season, leading his teams to sixteen postseason appearances, a record for any big league manager and one World Series title

in 1995. Cox also has the record for the most consecutive division titles won with a streak of fourteen between 1991 and 2005. Dare I say, Bobby Cox was the best major league manager of the last 25 years? He may not have as many rings as Joe Torre, but Cox never had a bad team, let alone a bad year. What more proof do you need but the tapes from his last game. The Giants are on their way to the National League championship series. They should be jumping for joy and smothering each other on the mound, right? What they did was stand behind the mound and clap in respect to a man as he took his last curtain call to a crowd that had known him for two damned decent seasons of baseball. As he doffed his cap to the crowd and headed back down to the clubhouse, a cap he often threw down in disgust at umpires earning him the most managerial ejections in baseball history, all you could hear was the crowd cheering his name, hoping he would come back out of the dugout one last time. The season was just picking up for the Giants, while a legacy was coming to an end just 90-feet away. See you in five years at Cooperstown, Bobby. H

Central Florida Beat By JOHN BRISENDINE With temps in the low 80s, low humidity and high spirits, the annual “Come Out with Pride” parade in Downtown Orlando was a rousing success. Central Florida businesses and civic groups proudly walked the parade route through many thousands of spectators including infants in strollers and senior citizens in wheelchairs and everything else in between! Most every nightclub catering to the LGBT community, along with gay-friendly businesses and numerous social, political and religion-based groups, marched along the streets of Lake Eola and Thorton Park to celebrate the diversity and creativity of our community. It was a complete success, and my view from the truck bed pulling the Parliament House float was, in my opinion, the best seat in the house. Check out my videos of the parade on YouTube. Just pull up my videos under the name “mrcrazyjohn.” Now, with the gay pride events complete, it's time to look ahead to the upcoming week. From October 15th to 18th, it's not only “Bear Weekend” in Orlando; it's also my birthday week, too! My favorite birthday gift this year will be, once again, hosting “Twisted Tom’s Perky Butt Contest 2010” on Friday night, October 15th starting at 12 midnight on the pool stage in the Parliament House Resort's courtyard. Join me and thousands of bears and their admirers as we rate the “perkiest” butt in all of Central Florida. Do you have what it takes to be the perkiest butt? Sign up by the pool stage from 11:00 to 11:30 p.m. In addition to the BC3 events taking place at The P House, the Bears of Central Florida (BOCF) will be hosting their 20th annual “Bear Bust” at The Royal Plaza Resort at Walt Disney World from October 14th through the 17th. For more info about all the “Bear Bust” activities and run package info, log onto their website at www.bocf.org. And finally, join me on Monday, October 18th as I hopefully make it to 45. I will be at the helm of my annual birthday edition of “Monday Happy Hour Karaoke” and reeking of booze and passed out in front of my soundboard — only at The Parliament House Resort. Joel will have the bar open at 4 p.m. and show time is after 5:30 p.m. See ya there. Twisted Tom will be in this space next week. I'll talk to you again on October 29th. Bye for now.H

Aioli By JEAN DOHERTY/LE PATIO Aioli is a kind of garlic mayonnaise sauce from the south of France. It is a great accompaniment for grilled fish, crab, shrimp, poached fish and all sorts of vegetables. I even like it with French Fries! In many small towns in the south of France you will find a yearly festival known as “la fête de la grande aioli”. Here, the aioli is much more than a garlic mayonnaise, it is a party for the whole town and usually huge platters of boiled seasonal vegetables, fish and hard-boiled eggs are served along with gallons of aioli. All the people gather to dance, drink wine and enjoy some delicious French cooking. If you make this recipe the traditional way with just olive oil, it is going to have a strong olive oil taste. Many people don’t like a strong olive oil taste so substitute your favorite vegetable oil for part of the olive oil to calm down this aioli recipe. I like it 50-percent olive oil and 50-percent vegetable oil myself. The garlic in this is potent. Start with one clove and be sure to remove the germ in the center of the garlic which can be difficult to digest. (In other words, that is what gives you bad breath!) You can also play around with this recipe by adding some pepper, mustard, chopped herbs or anything else that strikes your fancy. You are the chef!

Ingredients: 2 egg yolks 2 cloves of garlic Salt and pepper Cup of olive oil (or half veggie oil, half olive oil) Few drops of lemon juice Directions: The most important thing about this recipe is to have all your ingredients at the same temperature before making this sauce. It’s best is to take everything out of your fridge about an hour beforehand Take a bowl and start crushing the garlic into a fine paste. Then, season with salt and pepper then add the egg yolks. The next step is to start whisking in the olive oil, slowly and gradually, like for a mayonnaise. Finally, add few drops of lemon juice. Add a teaspoon of warm water to your aioli at the end. It will keep it from splitting.H
