By BOB KESCKEMETY With the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT), untold thousands of service members lives will soon be changing and, to prepare gay and lesbian service members for these changes, it was announced this week that a new magazine catering to their needs will soon be hitting the newsstands. The publication is being put together by OutServe, an organization that describes itself as an underground network of more than 2,900 LGBT military personnel. The bi-monthly magazine will cover the implementation of DADT repeal and other issues of interest to LGBT soldiers and concerns about their lifestyle in the military. The magazine will also report on the activities at the various OutServe chapters, which claims to have chapters in all fifty states and twelve other countries including current war zones. The organization is led by two co-directors: An active-duty member who goes by the pseudonym of J.D. Smith and civilian Co-Director Ty Walrod.

OutServe is currently looking to hire an executive director and is looking for donations and advertisers. OutServe, the organization, is comprised of LGBT members of the United States Armed Services and was publicly launched on July 26, 2010. “Our first objective with the magazine is to let all the gay, lesbian, bi and trans members currently serving know that they are not alone,” said J.D. Smith. “And we also want to communicate to all troops that there are capable gay military members serving honorably, and that accepting that [fact] and moving on will make our military stronger.”

The Obama administration has put on hold immigration cases involving married gay couples following the decision to drop its defense of DOMA [Defense of Marriage Act], the federal law banning same-sex marriage. The move means a foreign national married to a U.S. citizen of the same sex would not automatically be denied immigration benefits. One immigration lawyer said the decision could also give those facing deportation a reprieve. "They would not be deportable and
they would be eligible for work authorization," said Christopher Nugent, a long time immigration attorney who also works on immigration matters with the American Bar Association. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services insists the move is only temporary and that nothing is changing. USCIS spokesman Chris Bentley told FoxNews.com the cases will be held "in abeyance" while the department seeks final guidance on a handful of "technical legal issues." The expectation, he said, is

The Hopper is back!
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Stirling Tax, in a joint venture with Multimedia Platforms, LLC, officially announced this week that they would be bringing a Hopper back to Wilton Manors. They will be approaching local areas business to create branded vehicles over the next two to six weeks. “The Hopper will be a safe and free transportation service that runs throughout Oakland Park and Wilton Manors and will support all our local businesses”, Bobby Blair, CEO of Multimedia Platforms, said on Tuesday. He continued, “the idea is for us, as a business, to create ways for our local community and international tourists to find a safe and economical way to enjoy the area and the great businesses we have to offer.” The Hopper replaces the recently sold Green Hopper, which used to offer free transportation between the bars. Bobby Blair also said that the Hopper will further promote “our online and print publications in a way to ensure that we continue to offer the very best circulation and reach in the market today. It brings us great pleasure to know tourists and locals will be reading our publications as they are transported around Wilton Manors and the Fort Lauderdale area.” The rollout of the venture starts with two cars that will run in the evenings. By June 1st, they will add a day car, with the intention to add cars as demand grows to service the areas. As it stands now, the Hopper will shuttle people between the bars on the drive and outer bars, such as Boardwalk and Monkey Business on Andrews Ave, Mona’s on Flagler, all the way to Cosmo’s on East Oakland Park Blvd. In the future, the Hopper will also service all the Gay Guesthouses in the area. Jeff Stirling, President of Stirling Tax, said Tuesday, “I am so excited to be working with Multi Media Platforms on the venture. When the Green Hopper closed, it left a void for a free shuttle service in the area. We are very excited

to help local small businesses flourish. Paul Hyman Receives Lambda Legal Recognition FT. LAUDERDALE, FL – Paul Hyman, Executive Director of the Pride Center at Equality Park, was recognized for his dedication to the community at the annual Lambda Legal Recognition Dinner on Saturday, March 27. Over 300 people were in attendance at this year’s annual event, which was held at the Bonnet House. Hyman became Executive Director of the Pride Center (then know as the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of South Florida) six years ago during a period of time when the future of the center was in doubt. Since then, the Pride Center moved into its new, larger headquarters in Wilton Manors and has flourished and greatly expanded its programs to serve a larger portion of the community.H
Credit Union Steps in the Help Father Bill WILTON MANORS, FL – Gary Yamnitz, branch manager of the Wilton Manors office of the City County Credit Union, helped close the gap to purchase a previously owned automobile for Father Bill Collins, founder of the Poverello Center and Thrift Store. Last December, Johnny’s Bar general manager and promoter, A.J. Cross, heard Father Bill lost his car in a car accident and, recognizing that the humanitarian and Jesuit priest needed a car in order to continue his work, held several fundraisers. The efforts fell far short of the $18,000 needed to purchase a new car from Maroone Ford. At that time, Yamnitz made a donation for the car in the name of the credit union. Yamnitz contacted the Vice President of the Credit Union, Jennifer Burns who, in turn, discussed the situation with the credit union’s CEO, Lloyd Gill. Community Assistance Requested for Judy Shepard FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – The Pride Center at Equality Park has set up a special fund to help out community activist, Judy Shepherd. Shepherd was always one of the first in line to participate and support any and every event the community has asked of her. She has volunteered her time at the Stonewall Library and Archives, the Pride Center, Lavender Events and others. Shepherd was recently diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing surgery and other treatments in a local hospital, and is doing so without traditional health insurance. The Pride Center is asking the support of community to help this person who has supported the community for so many years. The Pride Center is acting as fiscal agent for the Judy Shepherd fund and has set up a dedicated bank account to manage donations sent on her behalf to the Pride Center. Murder Suspect Indicted The accused killer of two Wilton Manors residents was indicted last week for a double homicide that occurred in Wilton Manors in December of last year.
At 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, December 26, 2010, Wilton Manors Police Department officers were called to 2513 NE 8th Avenue to conduct a wellness check. A sister of one of the victims had called police when her brother had not arrived to her home for the holidays. Police entered the residence and found Stephen Duane Adams, 52, and Kevin Mark Powell, 47, dead inside with multiple gunshot wounds. The Broward Medical Examiner’s Office ruled their death a homicide. Peter Serge Avsenew, 26, was charged in a Grand Jury indictment for the murder of Adams and Powell. Avsenew was already being held without bond in Miami Dade County Jail for a probation violation out of Monroe County. He is charged with two counts of first degree murder, two counts of armed robbery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, unlawful use of a credit card and grand theft auto. Avsenew was transferred to the custody of Monroe County.H

North Miami Corruption Arrest Councilman Galvin Leads Authorities to Suspects MIAMI, FL – Earlier today, Councilman Scot Galvin revealed that he has been working directly with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office (SAO) on an investigation of public corruption in North Miami, since October 2010. State law enforcement officers arrested Ricardo Brutus, campaign manager and nephew of North Miami Mayor Andre Pierre today. He has been criminally charged with Unlawful Compensation, the equivalent of bribery. Brutus is also Pierre's appointee to the City's Board of Adjustment. Galvin said in a statement, “It has been a long time coming.” He went on to state, “Today's arrest is a direct result of information I brought to law enforcement five months ago. The exact details of my assistance in the probe will become known very soon as investigators and the State Attorney publicly release details. And I will share with you whatever they allow me to do that does not jeopardize our case.”

Liz Leave Fortune to AIDS Charities LOS ANGELES, CA – Actress Elizabeth Taylor left the majority of her $600 million fortune to AIDS charities. Taylor, who died last week of congestive heart disease, was a well-known AIDS activist and helped found the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation and amfAR in 1985. Taylor became active in the fight against AIDS when her close friend, Rock Hudson, died of the disease. It is estimated that as of 2002, Taylor’s jewelry collection alone was worth $150 million.H
Gay Student Sues Seton Hall University SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – Jesse Cruz, a gay junior attending Seton Hall University, is suing the Catholic school because they relocated him to a different dorm after his roommate complained. Cruz contends that they moved him because he’s gay. The university claims they’ve done nothing wrong. Jesse Cruz, a public relations major at Seton Hall in New Jersey, wants the school to pay up for allegedly forcing him out of his dorm room because his roommate had a

Gay Marriage is Business Boom WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington Post reports that the legalization of same sex marriage in the nation’s capital has been a boom for local businesses. Same sex marriage has been permitted in the District since March, 2010. It is estimated that service businesses sales with relation to weddings are up 40% over previous years since the city held their first gay and lesbian wedding expo in May 2010. “There seems to be some windfall for our small businesses engaged in the event and wedding industry,” said Jeffrey D. UK Equality Watchdog Recommends Asking Kids If They're Gay UNITED KINGDOM – A report from the U.K.’s Equality and Human Rights Commission recommends children should be asked if they are gay starting at age 11, and a record of those who are unsure or “questioning” their sexuality should be kept. According to The Daily Mail, the report says children could be asked about their sexuality without their parent’s consent. The commission says the purpose of monitoring sexual orientation among young people is to prevent them from becoming victims of discrimination and bullying. The report claims “some young people begin to question their sexual orientation as early as age eight and may begin to identify as LGB (lesbian, gay, bisexual) from early adolescence.” Graham Stuart, Tory chairman of the Commons education select committee, called the plans “invasive, sinister and threatening.” "School should be a place of safety, not a place where pupils are picked over for the purpose of some QUANGO [quasi-autonomous non-governmental organization]; and many chil-
dren won’t understand what they are talking about.” Teachers, nurses and youth workers are being urged to set up pilot studies aimed at monitoring adolescent sexual orientation for the first time. A report commissioned by the Government’s equalities watchdog found that it was ‘practically and ethically’ possible to interview young children about their sexuality. Controversially, it says parental consent, while ‘considered good practice,’ is not a legal necessity. The report – Researching and Monitoring Adolescence and Sexual Orientation: Asking the Right Questions, at the Right Time – says it is “critical” to track children’s sexuality to “shed light on the complexities of young people’s developing sexual orientation and how this may disadvantage them”. It tells researchers not to dismiss a subject’s gay feelings as “a passing phase”. Last night, a Commission spokesman said: “This is independent research produced to help the Commission form its policy direction”.H

Students Protest Anti-Gay Slurs
Target Sues Gay Rights Group
MEADVILLE, PA – Students and faculty at Allegheny College marched across the college campus to bring attention to anti-homosexual slurs written on dormitory doors twice in recent months. College officials are investigating the incidents, which took place in February. The protest was organized by a group who calls themselves Queer ‘n Allies.H
SAN DIEGO, CA – Target Department Stores has filed a suit against a San Diego pro-gay marriage organization to get them to stop protesting in front of its area stores claiming that that the protests are driving away customers. The trial against an organization named Canvass for a Cause began last Friday and will most likely further strain relationships between the LGBT community and Target, which began when it was disclosed last summer that Target made a $150,000 donation to a business group backing a Republican Minnesota candidate opposed to samesex marriage. Target, however, claims they remain committed to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights and its lawsuit has nothing to do with the political agenda of the organization. Canvass for a Cause says it is using shopping malls, college campuses and department stores, including Target, to collect signatures and donation in support of gay marriage.H
Call for U.N. to Support Gay Rights
NEW YORK – Last week, the Obama administration called on the U.N. Human Rights Council to fight discrimination against gays and lesbians around the world. The council condemned human rights violations based on sexual orientation or gender identity, including rape, torture and murder. “Human rights are the inalienable right of every person, no matter who they are or who they love,” Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe, U.S. ambassador to the council in Geneva, said in a written statement. “The U.S. government is firmly committed to supporting the right of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals to lead productive and dignified lives, free from fear and violence.” “It is a really pressing issue globally that there continue to be killings on the basis of sexual orientation and persecution on that basis,” said Suzanne Nossel, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs. “I think this will stimulate dialogue and increase recognition of the importance of the issue among governments.”H
Ninth Court Denies Gay-Marriage Appeal LOS ANGELES, CA – California’s Ninth Circuit Court decided to keep in place the stay of Judge Walker’s ruling on the state’s Prop 9 litigation. The case, now known as Perry v. Brown since there was a change in governors, will continue through the federal courts while marriage equality will be on hold in California.H

Sticks & Stones... Bullying is never acceptable and the news is rife with suicides as a result of anti-gay bullying in schools and colleges. The president has held a conference regarding bullying and is seen on a video saying, “You didn’t do anything wrong” for the “It Gets Better” campaign. Most of the abuse we read about consists of verbal abuse that is psychologically damaging. Gay slurs, including the infamous ‘F’ word, are still bandied around in derogatory fashions. ‘That’s so gay’ and ‘you are such a fag’ are all too commonly used against young people to imply they are less than their straight peers. However, “Faggot”, in particular, has achieved the ability to replace queen and queer as the hate word for the gay community. It has become the “term de riguer” for the 21st century against all ages and by people that should know better. Just this week, WWE announcer Michael Cole has come under fire for tweeting a homophobic slur about fellow announcer Josh Mathews. The tweet came shortly after WWE announced they were working with GLAAD to promote anti-gay bullying initiatives. In addition, openly gay Vanity Fair columnist Brett Hartinger, had to apologize for writing an article about Glee and using the word. The outcry on both was huge; Cole apologized almost immediately and Vanity Fair issued a very sensitive apology on Hartinger’s behalf. In the case of Michael Cole, “Faggot” was used as an insult; in Brett’s case, he used it to intentionally shock and as an off-hand remark, and deemed it acceptable because he is gay. The difference can be noted however, the more we allow hate words to become shock tactics by those who are hated, it makes it acceptable for others to use them. Many gay people claim by taking the word on as their own, it desensitizes the effect. Really? Ask the fourteen year old who hears it every day in the corridor how unaffected he is. Saying the word over and over doesn’t make it less of an insult, it doesn't degrade its effect on
people. It is just as wrong and just as hateful whatever the context. Be honest: How often have you used the word or heard it within the community? It is bandied about without a care in the world. Many people don’t realize
Alex Vaughn that by doing this we only end up making it acceptable. Last night I heard three intelligent and active members of the community call each other “Faggots”. How can we teach the younger generation to be more tolerant when they will follow by example? Gay bullying and name calling is nothing new, but now, as attitudes change regarding the community throughout the world, the word is becoming akin to “Nigger”, a term we don’t – and shouldn’t use anymore. As acceptance for black people changed, that word became totally off bounds; very similarly, however, the word has a cult status now within the black community. Rap songs use it constantly and, by the same token, the

If you would dare use the word towards a black person, however, you can expect, quite rightly, for them to be insulted. This is a warning: By ‘making it their own,’ it has become a loaded term, that has in no way over the past sixty years become ANY less offensive. Do we really want to follow this path? The attitude seems to be, ‘well I am one so I can say it’. Whenever I have heard people in bars calling each other names, it is meant in the same derogatory tone as “Queen”. By using this, we demean each other, and worse, imply that we agree a “Faggot” is someone to whom we can feel superior. Bullying and name calling doesn’t stop with that. There is a lot of infighting and griping between Gay guys and Lesbians. Where is the unity? We are supposed to be a supportive community, yet gay men here happily call lesbians “Dyke’s” and lesbians yell out “Faggots” and “Queens” all the time. How can we genuinely expect people to stop using these words against us if, when they come into the community, they hear them all the time as either pseudo terms of endearment or malicious insult? I mean, seriously. We aren’t children. We go around calling each other names like the bars are playgrounds. It is really simple to stop: Just don’t glamorize it by calling your peers “Faggots” and “Dykes”. It’s just not necessary. When you do hear the term used against you and your friends, take a page out of the book of a guy I saw walking down Wilton Drive. A group of “real men” drove past him and yelled out “Faggot”. He simply turned, took a bow and yelled out, “Thank You!” That is the way to diffuse the immaturity of people who want to drive through a gay area yelling out a silly word from the safety of a moving car.H

making a difference when it comes to gay marriage and other important policy issues important to GLBT Americans. Mary Cheney and Megan McCain’s support of gay marriage is not a representation of the Republican Party as Jessica Osman, who wrote the article, would like us to believe. Jessica fails to recognize that the Republican daddies have blocked or firmly opposed every major policy
issue important to GLBT Americans. Gay Marriage on the state level, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, adoption rights for GLBT Americans, immigration and healthcare rights for same sex couples. The list goes on and on. GLBT issues continue to fall on deaf ears when it comes to the Republican Party, their platform, and the blocking of key legislation. The Log Cabin and Sunshine Republicans can
fantasize about how much has changed. Unfortunately the Republican Party’s platform has never embraced any of the core GLBT issues our community has been fighting for. Federal Report on Health and the Impact on LGBT Youth By CHARLES ROBBINS Years from now, students taking a health class may get tested on, “what important study was released on March 31, 2011?” The answer: today, the Institutes of Medicine released an historic report about the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans that started a wave of healthcare industry reforms to improve the overall health of this diverse community. This might be a slight exaggeration, but that the federal government released an inclusive health study about LGBT people is historic, nonetheless. It opens the door to more research and more knowledge and ultimately better services for members of our community, which is especially exciting regarding our youth. One thing we know for sure is that we don’t know a lot about LGBT youth. There is very little existing research on the LGBT population as a whole, but even less research exists about LGBT young people, and very few nationally recognized studies have been conducted about young gender variant, gender queer, and transgender youth. What this
means is, while young people are now identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender at earlier ages, the public health industry is has very limited information about how to help them. This lack of information about LGBT youth is perhaps one of the reasons why Florida has the fifth-highest call volume to the Trevor Lifeline in the country, based on 2010 statistics. As a national suicide prevention lifeline, we know that many of youth who call feel they have no place else to turn. In Florida, these youth are calling because they are experiencing depression, anxiety, loneliness, relationship troubles with family members or peers, or they have questions about their sexual orientation or gender identity. The challenge is, without the research to explain why Florida’s LGBT youth are in such desperate need of The Trevor Project’s suicide prevention lifeline, the state cannot begin to address the problems LGBT youth face. Thankfully, this new report from the Institutes of Medicine opens the door for more federally funded research to address these gaps. It will take some time before robust
information about the health of LGBT youth is known and can be fully integrated into health systems of care. However, this report is an important step for healthcare providers, state and local policy makers to begin allocating resources, adjusting policies, and providing better health services for LGBT youth, in Florida and across the country.H

Trojan Warfare! Sexual Protection? by JACK HANDY
When a Trojan is Not a Good Thing. So there you are home alone after trolling the scene late one night, after trying to score on some drunken hottie out ‘getting their club on’ with no luck. Unfortunately, that Trojan condom burning a hole in your wallet isn’t going to serve you up a night of unbridled protected pleasure on your manhunt tonight so it is off to your ‘virtual’ Manhunt or Tube8 or whatever guilty (or un-guilty) pleasure adult website you lurk on - I mean ‘visit’ in the wee hours of the morning. Whilst lurking - I mean ‘surfing’, your favorite categories of fetish you have all but forgotten about the odds of using that Trojan in your pocket for some hot back door action. However, unbeknownst to you someone else is using their Trojan to Back-Door You! Not in a good way! Strangely, you find yourself admiring your professional prowess at manipulating your keyboard at lightning speeds with only one hand, while Jack Handy is once again showing his unmitigated devotion to your needs. You click on the video that is going to bring it on home! And then it happens, it might as well be an air raid horn, or terrorist attack because there it is Popped-Up on your screen… You have just been Hi-Jacked! Suddenly a Trojan has just become a very bad thing in your world. You have just let a virus crawl right up your back door registry and you, or let’s say your PC ‘technically’, is now infected!
Fake registry scans are controlling your computer and Pop-Up windows to purchase Virus protection are filling your screen and you are just left sitting there shell shocked with Jack Handy, well let’s just call him Richard Limp. Boy do you feel violated (again, NOT in a good way). You can technically categorize viruses, malware, spyware, adware, Trojans, bots, hijackers in many different ways. So let’s not get into the semantics of that conversation let’s just say they are all bad things and you just don’t want them to be on your PC, for many different reasons. Some just slow you’re your pc down reporting your browsing habits to target advertising, some record your keystrokes and could steal your identity or credit card number, and some like the insidious creature above can hijack your browser or your whole computer. These Hijacker Viruses leave a little worm inside your machine that block the execution of your typical Virus protection software and anything that might enable you to do anything fix it. They are stealthy little critters that just keep digging in deeper the more you click on the pop-up boxes to close them. By no means go and purchase what they selling because it is all FAKE! So what do you do if you are HiJacked by this Trojan! How do you get it out of your valuable asset? (Your computer that is) How do you Free Your PC? Navigating Networking Steps to Building Better Business Relationships By DREW MILLER Hello Agenda Readers, My name is Drew Miller. I have been a business owner since 2003 and have learned that my business prospers when I create relationships with my customers and clients. My business isn’t brick and mortar, so I rely on networking and creating personal relationships to build my business. I am thrilled at the opportunity to help you create new possibilities through successful business networking. I will be bringing you helpful hints to increase your business and positively affect your life along the way. With this first article, I would like to create a road map of what you can look forward to. My goals with this column are: • To shed some light on some personal qualities that will bring you respect in your field and your life. • To give you suggestions that will help you navigate through networking and strengthen your abilities to communicate. • To give you some ideas that will help you create possibilities in your life where you have felt limitations. Hint: Networking is an art, not a science. Some people believe networking is a numbers game. Scientifically speaking, the more contacts you make, the more business you can get. The art of networking, however, is about building relationships and making connections. The trick is to leverage both the science AND the art. Think about your definition of networking. Think about the successful people you respect in business. Go ahead and ask them for ideas and suggestions on how you can hone the art of networking. You will be amazed at how many people want to help. These are the people
in your life who can help you succeed. These are the relationships that will strengthen your business. Recently, I attended a networking event with about 25 people. At that event, I spoke with about 5 people. Not all were good contacts for me, but I did take the time to get to know each of them. The first person I spoke with taught me a little bit about advertising on buses. That reminded me of Carrie Bradshaw in “Sex and the City” with her pink ballerina skirt. I turned out to be a good contact for them. Since I know a thing or two about the networking functions in the area, I was able to guide them to events that best suited their business. I made a connection, helped someone else and am pretty confident they will remember me if they need my services or run into someone else that does. Next, I met a Bookkeeper. Bookkeeping businesses are always good for me because they are excellent contacts for my merchant account business. They usually have numerous contacts and have a strong influence over these decisions with their own clients. We shared mutual leads and discussed how she networks her business. She was interested in broadening her networking visibility and I suggested a leads group which she joined. Again, I made a connection, helped someone who can help me and I built a new relationship. While speaking to a financial planner, we discovered we went to high school together. We had not seen each other in years and it was nice to rekindle an old friendship. Past associations and introductions from mutual friends are the easiest connections to make and to remember. The connection is based on more than just business. It’s personal. The more personal the connection, the stronger the connection.
These are just a few examples of how I use networking to grow my business. We all need to create a beautiful realm of possibilities to further our business and have a successful life. Remember, it's an art as much as it is a science. Now go and create a new possibility.H

A WWE statement at the time read: "World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) will be working with GLAAD to create and promote an anti-bullying initiative aimed at their core audience, and has invited us to conduct trainings for their staff of writers and editors. "GLAAD contacted WWE executives and explained the problem after receiving our first reports. They then spoke to
John Cena and the show's writers. "We have been assured that not only will such incidents not happen again, WWE intends to reach out to their adolescent audience, with messages aimed making it clear that bullying someone with homophobic taunts or for their perceived sexual orientation is wrong." After the Cole tweet, Vince McMahon's company added: "WWE has alerted GLAAD to the situation and spoken to Michael Cole about his post. "He has removed it and apologized for using hateful language. Michael will be included in the training session being done by GLAAD." Cole's outburst may well put his involvement in Wrestlemania and his position as a lead figure on WWE shows in serious jeopardy. STAMFORD, CT – Top wrestling commentator Michael Cole has apologized after making a homophobic slur about fellow WWE announcer Josh Mathews on Twitter. Michael Cole, who will be in his first match ever at WrestleMania against Jerry 'The King' Lawler, called fellow announcer Josh Mathews a 'faggot' in a tweet that was seen by thousands of his followers on Twitter. The offensive message was deleted and Cole again tweeted shortly afterwards, "I apologize to any and all who were offended by my tweet toward young Josh Mathews. The International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) is gearing up for “Unleashed,” this year’s theme for the group’s 2011 annual convention being held in Fort Lauderdale May 10 – 15. Organizers of the event are expecting over 800 delegates from 84 countries in attendance. In honor of the happenings, the Rainbow Business Coalition (RBC) of Greater Fort Lauderdale is hosting The March of Nations parade on Friday, May 13, to be held on Wilton Drive. The cavalcade will include convention delegates and their national flags, and culminate in a concert with headliner entertainment at Hagen Park (next to the gayborhood’s city hall). IGLTA’s convention – its 28th annual – will focus on internet marketing, particularly social media (have you heard about Facebook?), and new travel technologies. RBC chair Reece Darham said at a recent meeting of the business and community association that the convention and March will “further cement Greater Fort Lauderdale’s place as the second most popular gay travel destination – clearly.” Re/Max (Redux) Pity the building maintenance people at Keller Williams Realty in Fort Lauderdale: no sooner had the paint with Rick Gibson’s name dried on the front door that the local real estate magnate announced he was heading back to his old digs (sort of). Gibson, who recently received The Bestie community award as the area’s “Best Realtor,” worked for six years at Re/Max Partners, which closed its doors earlier this year. The new Re/Max franchise, Re/Max Preferred, has also recruited local realty mavens Henri Vezie and Frank Vigliotti (known professionally as the Henri Frank Team), who reportedly represented over 60% of the listings for their previous home, the venerable Castelli Real Estate Services. The new Re/Max amalgam is planning a dedicated office on Wilton Drive. It Isn’t Easy Being Green (Ribbet) The Green Hopper, the local shuttle service which ferried locals and tourists to (some) Wilton Manors venues, ended operations last month after just over two years of mostly - in the words of Blanche DuBois – “relying on the kindness of strangers.” [Because of local ordinances governing the regulation of taxis, the business couldn’t charge standard cab fares, relying instead on tips and voluntary remittances from its patrons.] While owner Alan Carter attempted to sell the business locally, ultimately it

The former Green Hopper, while a convenience to many area residents and tourists for both shopping and nightlife travel, was known to be selectively curmudgeonly, often opting to not service bars and venues that didn’t partner for advertising opportunities. (And in the interest of full disclosure, there is no indication or evidence to suggest that either entity bears any but the most superficial relationship to Agenda and Mark publisher Kevin Hopper.) Credit Union; Where Credit Is Due In a follow up to the December 20, 2010, benefit held in his honor at Johnny’s Club, Bar & Lounge, Father Bill Collins has a new ride, and he has City County Credit Union (CCCU) to thank in large measure. The founder of the Poverello Center Food Bank had been without wheels since an accident last year resulted in the loss of his vehicle. Enter Sean David and A.J. Cross of Johnny’s, who hosted the fundraiser late last year. Still, the money netted from the event wasn’t enough to cover the sticker price. Gary Yamnitz, branch manager of CCCU’s Wilton Manors office, contacted Cross and a plan was set in motion, which resulted in the credit union ponying up to pay for the difference. CCCU VP Jennifer Burns and CEO Lloyd Gill also did their parts as angels-in-waiting, with the result being the good padre no longer needs to cab it: he is the proud new owner of a 2009 Toyota Camry. Sounding Off! Gym etiquette goes hand in hand with working out! By TOM BONANTI Last week, I was downing a post workout smoothie with my friend Ricardo when the subject of gym etiquette came up in conversation. Between the two of us, we have 110 years of experience working out in probably fifty different gyms. As we reminisced, our talk became more heated as the topic changed from blasting our biceps to the need for some sort of code of gym conduct to prevent some of the awful things we’ve seen over the years. A gym is not just a place where YOU go to work out. The gym is a great social outlet for people of all ages and backgrounds to go to exercise and relieve stress. As such, there are some basic and oh, so essential rules of gym etiquette I feel I must review. First, remember that you are not the only one in the gym. If you have to carry around your cell phone, put it on vibrate and, when you get a call, take it outside or somewhere you don’t have to share it with the rest of us! Speaking of not sharing, keep a towel with you to wipe down equipment after using it. No one wants
to workout in a puddle of your bodily fluids. Second, the gym is not your private space. This means you should not push in front of others to get to equipment. Rack free weights once you have finished your sets. Don’t linger at stations while you talk on the phone or waste time; others are waiting patiently. I was once in a gym where a female bodybuilder of note was working out – her ego was bigger than her breast implants! This behemoth pushed and shoved in front of others to hog the weights and monopolize 2 and 3 pieces of equipment at a time. What a gross turn-off. A simple “Excuse me…” or “Pardon me, are you using those weights?” is so much nicer and than a primal grunt and a shove from behind. Don’t forget basic kindness and manners. You expect them from others; why not let others learn from your good example? Another basic rule of gym etiquette has to do with personal hygiene. used both before and after a workout. If your jock can stand up on its own in your locker, then it’s time to do laundry. Yes, real men bathe, wear deodorant and wash their gym clothes. While I’m on this tirade of discussing personal hygiene, let me say a word to those phantoms of the locker room who refuse to flush their mess and those who spit, hock and dispose of their gum in the drinking fountains. Get with the human race. Learn to flush the toilet! Stop using the drinking fountain as your personal waste receptacle! And while we’re at it, the locker room is no place to trim your toe-nails, shave your head, or iron your clothes. These are tasks to do at home, not in a public place. Arthur B. Smith Community “Star” To Be Recognized This Weekend By ALEX VAUGHN “I never dreamt that, having worked for the center knowing that the center could do great things, I would someday myself need the services of the center,” said Arthur B. Smith, recipient of the 2011 Pride Center “Stars of the Rainbow Tyler Healis Sustainability Award” for his work in fundraising for the Pride Center at Equality Park. Smith moved to South Florida in 1987. Already a successful lawyer in Massachusetts, Smith decided he would sell his house up north, close his law offices and relocate to South Florida where he specializes in real estate development, estate planning and corporate law. Over the years, Smith represented many estates which have contributed to the Pride Center at Equality Park. He also represented the John C. Graves Estate, which oversaw the creation of the John C. Graves fund at the Community Foundation of Broward, from which the Pride Center has received sizeable grants, and the Gilbert Corwin Estate, which has also bequeathed $350,000 to the Pride Center. Smith’s relationship with the Pride Center goes back to the beginning of the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Fort Lauderdale, when it was still located on East Oakland Park Boulevard, just west of Dixie Highway. He became actively involved when the center bought its first property on North Andrews Avenue twelve years ago. “It had a capital campaign back then and it fizzled,” said Smith. “And I decided to try to get more involved in the fundraising.” He said he recognized the idea of a community center was a good cause and could do many great things for the community. “I never thought I would be instrumental, along with a few other people, in founding the Founder’s Circle but there were six or seven of us that decided we would donate $100 a month to the center. It has now grown to over two hundred and thirty”. Today, the members of the Founders Circle meet every four to six weeks for a cocktail party. The location of the party changes monthly and is usually in the business or home of one of the members. Food and drink are donated. One hundred-percent of the money collected

at the monthly cocktail party is profit and goes for the operating expenses of the center. Each month, perspective Founders Circle members are also invited to attend. “The growth of the Founders Circle has been of particular pride to me,” said Smith. Smith said that many of those original founders recognized the great contribution to the community the Center could perform but they, themselves, never needed any of the Center’s servic-
es. Then, about four years ago, Smith discovered he was HIV-positive. “I was upset and didn’t know where to turn, so I checked out the Pride Center and found a program called PALS.” PALS (Positive Action for Living Safely) offers HIV-positive men social support and accurate HIV information to help lead to richer, safer life. He participated in both of PALS’ group-based programs, CHOICES, a 5week course helping HIV-positive men cope with and build healthy relation-
ships, and the L.I.F.E. program, a 17week course for personal health improvement and boosting the immune system. “The programs really changed my life,” said Smith. “For this, I feel like I owe the Center an unbelievable debt and never thought the Center would give back to me in such a gratifying way.” Today, Smith sits on the Vision 2015 committee. Forty-five percent of the current property and building are already paid off. The purpose of Vision 2015 is to engage 500 individuals to donate $1,000 annually for the next five years resulting, in a debt-free Pride Center. “I feel that the Center is a long-lasting, permanent and stable force within the community,” said Smith. “They were very fortunate they were able to buy [the property] when they did during the downturn of the real estate market at a great price. I think that now more and more people are becoming aware of the Center and are willing to support it. I see it only going up from here and I see it someday having an endowment to support many of the programs.” The annual Pride Center’s Stars of the Rainbow Awards recognizes those who have made a significant contribution to the Pride Center and the community. Also being honored at this weekend’s Stars are: Pastor Leslie Tipton of the Church of the Holy SpiritSong (Pride Center Board Member Star of the Year); Nikki Adams of Broward House and Donna Markland of the Broward County Health Department (Community Stars of the Year); The Trevor Project (Non-Profit Star of the Year); Norm Kent (Media Star of the Year); U.S. Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Public Official Stars of the Year); PALS Project Volunteers (Volunteer Star of the Year) and Will Spencer (Alan Schubert Humanitarian Award).H

When Sex is No Longer a Choice, But An Addiction A stage review by WARREN DAY If you see only one gay play this year, you should make it "The First Step: Dairy of a Sex Addict," now playing at the Empire Stage Theater in Fort Lauderdale through April 24. Regardless of subject matter or the sexual orientation of its characters, this is one of the better local productions I've seen in recent years. First billed as the southeastern premiere of a play originally produced in New York, it has been substantially reshaped to where it could be considered a world premiere. And those changes appear to have turned a favorably received play into an even stronger one. While the main character is addicted to "quickies" (at least one a day with different people), that won't keep other gays and straights from relating to elements of his story. Like all good plays, it's about more than just its plot, so even if you haven't had sex in a public restroom or an adult video store, you can still recognize something of yourself in Joe's struggle to define what role sex (and intimacy) will play in his life. The author is listed as Henry Covery, but seemingly that's a pseudonym (in-rycovery?), due to this work being based on real, and possibly litigious, experiences.
And as this playful play unfolds, it feels like something that really happened. "The First Step" is very funny, as well as inventive, gutsy and smart. I would recommend you get your tickets right away, because as the word spreads that this comedy/drama is something special, it may not be so easy to obtain a seat in this intimate theater. Under the superb direction of Michael Leeds, it moves at a brisk 80 minutes with no intermission. His experience doing musicals on Broadway as well as regional theaters, including one Tony nominated show, can be clearly seen in such moments as when the cast performs a rap song on the fanciful screen names people use in online chat rooms, or in a sexual addiction therapy group where the participants break into slightly altered Broadway songs to tell their stories of ho and woe. The polished company of players delivers spot-on timing for the comedy and wounded vulnerability for the dramatic moments, giving either sparkle or

subtle nuance wherever it's appropriate. Larry Buzzeo plays Joe, who must merit both sympathy and empathy in his reckless search for self-understanding. The rest of the cast – Katherine Amadeo, Matthew William Chizever, Joe Harter and Zach Schwartz – play his family members, tricks, partner and fellow sexual addicts on that spiraling journey. The actors seem to be having a hell-of-agood time and that becomes contagious for the audience. So do yourself a favor, do your friends a favor, and take "The First Step."H

Jennifer McClain A Cabaret Life: Unscripted & Hilarious By ALEX VAUGHN Jennifer McClain has been a staple of Wilton Manors cabaret life for over a decade. She sat down with Agenda to discuss the highs and lows of her time on the Drive, and the future.

How long have you been performing in Wilton Manors? As a cabaret performer, off and on for the last 12 years. Within that time, I hosted karaoke, which is not really performing, but it’s a 5 hour stretch of acting like you are really happy to be there. I love going, but it makes me a horrible person.
Have you ever been tempted to go further afield? I have, but I really love Saturday nights at the Alibi; those nights are really fun and great. People ask all the time why I don’t go to straight bars. I say, “you know what, all my friends are here and this is where everyone I know is.” I do work at a resort once a week, but I tend to do the best with the gay community or the senior citizens, because of my musical style and sense of humor. I’ll always go for the double entendre rather than the dick jokes; I’m not comfortable with that … but I’ll imply the heck out of it.
What do you enjoy most about performing? When I do a song or tell a joke that connects with the audience. Maybe they aren’t all paying attention, but there is that one guy who I see who you can tell is connected to what I am singing; it reminds him of something . What gets you going at Alibi? Of course, there is my all-spontaneous show at Alibi every Saturday. It’s almost like a piano bar where I do nothing but requests. I love scripted, too, but because I have a vast repertoire, I like to judge by the audience. When I tell a story, God knows they are all true; I don’t need to make anything up with my life! I can just jump into a song. What is the benefit with working within the gay community? For me, my favorite type of songs to sing are the show tunes. When I first came down here I figured it was perfect. Traditionally, people who like show tunes tend to be gay or seniors, so I figured I was set. They are open to variety – plus I get to be all glamorous. How do people react to you in the day? [Laughs] Well, I saw this kid in gym and he yelled out, “I thought you were a drag
Have you ever wanted to try for a show like American Idol? No. Yes and no. First of all, I’m not a fan of contests in general – either being a judge or a contestant. There is enough judgement without needing to put yourself out there for the express purpose of being judged. As for American Idol, I have always been above their age limit! What about America’s Got Talent? I had a friend who did that show and it’s expensive. You have to get to audition, then you have to take a leave of absence from work and a lot of them tell you what to sing. Contestants are a lot more limited than you would think. Any plans for cutting a CD? I actually have one – it was supposed to be one of many. It’s
country music; the next one never happened. But I did a quick down and dirty Christmas album. The country went out in 2006; I now give them away – sometimes as tips to removal men! I would like to do one that is truer to what I sing; I love songs that tell stories. I would love to do more of a Broadway standard CD; I just haven’t found the right person to work with yet. Where would you really like to go in the future? What I’d really like to do next is a bit of travelling, some out of town engagements, like the RSVP cruises and Atlantis. I don’t think I would like to move ... I love it here! My one woman show is in New York, called ‘Lady Swigs the Booze’ with a live accompanist. I just haven’t been able to get up there! Are there any disadvantages to working within the community? I’m single. When you look back over your career here, what’s the highlight? It wasn’t the theme parks [Laughs] … um … oh my God, how could I forget? I did the New Year’s Eve travel pride as a headline with Coco Peru. That was totally amazing. Now, what’s the biggest cringe moment? I am able to laugh at
anything I can do personally, so that limits the cringe factor [pause], but I have [laughs]. I am afraid to say it because people will know what I am talking about. This was right after Pridefest. Any time there’s a day celebration the crowd is rowdy! There was a woman who obviously was drunk, who kept dancing in front of the stage. People tried to make her move. All of a sudden, someone else came in and they made out right in front of me. It was so awkward! I turned lights off, the music stopped and I called for security. It was so bad, I know the guy well and my parents were in the audience. If it had been two guys kissing that would have been fine! [Laughs] It was the first 30 minutes of the show! I have had people participate ‘a bit too much’ but usually later in the show! Of course there was the drunken lesbian who was flashing me at Bill’s one time … with no bra … and she wasn’t a lipstick lesbian either. I love lesbians. What social influences do you think affect your popularity, and how do you think your show helps the community? Facebook. Absolutely. I use it as a marketing tool. I try to always say funny comments. A lot of stuff on my page is exaggerated. I don’t do Jaeger shots at the gym! My mom and dad bring in their friends, four straight women in their 60’s. I think me being there is bringing more straight people into the gay community, which I like. So what’s next for Jennifer? I’m still working on getting back up to New York, planning to go up to Fire Island and Rehoboth Beach. I will be involved in the Broward Bares It in August. I am super excited, because I will have a dance troupe; it will be a full on production.H

To most of us, Spring symbolizes rebirth. The vast majority of South Floridians are transplants from Northern states where daydreams of Spring gave us something bright and warm to look forward to during the frigid, dreary, and tenacious monochromatic winters. Just when one can’t deal with another gray day, seemingly over night, Spring would announce her arrival with an explosion of freshness
home / recipe and new life. The gray, sleepy world of Winter was jarred awake with spring’s cornucopia of flowers, blooming trees, and freshly tilled vegetable gardens. It was easy to feel energized, happy and hopeful. Here in South Florida, the transition between our version of Winter and Spring is much more discreet and gradual. Winter’s generally comfortable temperatures and low humidity slowly give way to warmer days in late March and April, becoming just plain hot by mid-May. Even though South Florida doesn’t have the paradox between the change of seasons, the “promises” of Spring are embedded in our subconscious. The tendency remains for us to cling to the “hope” of Spring, becoming seduced by the innate optimism that surrounds the season. That being said, no matter whether one lives in Alaska or Florida, “Spring” remains synonymous with rebirth. You can bring the freshness of Spring into your home, as well. Spruce up its interior spaces to reflect Spring’s cheery presence. This IS Florida, not New York! Bright adjustments to colors and window treatments can carry through the entire Summer. Less is more! Be a genie and make clutter disappear! Open up spaces to create a relaxed, airy ambiance. Use just a few statement pieces as focal points. Simplicity is the key word here. Go with a few bold, tropical, eye-catching colors and a decor to

bring relaxation and a calming balance to the room. Dark colors for walls and heavy window treatments tend to add to the “heat quotient”. That’s not what you want to do during the six month long sub-tropical Florida Summer! Unlike the states where the residents must “winterize” their homes to protect them from harsh components of freezing weather, in Florida, Spring is the time we should prudently “summarize” our “castles” for economic, and aesthetic reasons. Our Summer weather and the effects it has on our home inside and out, is as harsh as what Winter weather does to homes “up North”. For the outdoors: Buy spray polyurethane and apply it on coach lamps, mailboxes, and other outdoor items that might pit and tarnish. They remain looking fresh and new, staving off the impulse to buy new ones. Make sure your sprinkler system is tweaked and efficient to save on water costs. Splash your gardens with lots of colorful plants, always remembering to use low water use plants, and keep their light requirements in mind. Trim away dead, dying vegetation to let the sun encourage new growth and fertilize the gardens

To save lots of money on airconditioning costs, it can’t be over emphasized to make sure your insulation is as efficient as possible and your system has been serviced. All doors and windows should have weather stripping, and be tinted wherever there is direct sun. Use a digital thermostat and program the temperatures for times when you’re home or not. There are all kinds of window treatments today that, while still letting light in, will help block out the sun’s heat. Check out government and utility company sites. These sites offer plenty of useful advice for saving on energy costs. With all the money saved on electric costs, your wardrobe, or even your savings account – yes, savings account – will thank you! If you don’t have the alleged “gay decorating gene,” or aren’t a “Do it yourself ” person, there are limitless web sites offering free and great advice. Protect and enjoy your biggest investment. Never forget, imagination and thinking outside the box cost nothing. When all is said and done, at the end of the day, all that matters is what makes you happy. It’s YOUR HOME!H

Quiche Lorraine
In French cuisine, a quiche is an ovenbaked dish made with eggs and milk or cream in a pastry crust. Other ingredients, such as cooked chopped meat, vegetables, or cheese, are often added to the egg mixture before the quiche is baked. The wellknown Quiche Lorraine is an open pie with a filling consisting of an egg and cream custard, which is called migaine in Lorraine, with smoked bacon or “lardons”. The addition of Gruyère cheese makes a Quiche au Gruyère or a Quiche Vosgienne. The Quiche Alsacienne is similar to the Quiche Lorraine, though onions are added to the recipe. Quiche became popular in England sometime after the Second World War and in the U.S. during the 1950s. Today, you can find lots of varieties of quiche, from the original Quiche Lorraine, to ones with leeks, broccoli, mushrooms, ham and/or seafood (usually shellfish). Quiche can be served at any meal or as a snack. You will need: A 9 inch pie crust 12 slices bacon, fried crisp and chopped A good handful of shredded Swiss cheese 4 eggs 2 cups of half and half Salt & pepper A pinch of nutmeg
Heat your oven @ 425 Sprinkle the bacon, and cheese into the pastry-lined pie ovenware. If you like, you can also add onion -- you are the chef !. In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs slightly and beat in the remaining ingredients. Pour this mixture into the pie plate. Cook uncovered at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 300 degrees. Cook uncovered until knife inserted halfway between center and edge comes out clean, about 30 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes before cutting. Serve with a salad of fresh greens and a light vinaigrette …YUM!H
