Black Men at Higher Risk of HIV Miscalculated Partner Choice to Blame By ALEX VAUGHN Young black men who have sex with men (MSM) get infected with HIV nearly five times more often than MSM from other races, even though they don't have more unprotected sex. The discrepancy has long mystified public health experts, but a new study by investigators at Johns Hopkins and elsewhere now offers a possible explanation for it. The study found that young black MSM – a group that includes openly gay and bisexual men, as well as those who have sex with men but do not identify themselves as gay or bisexual – select partners and judge these partners' HIV status in a specific way. The results are based on interviews with 35 black men ages 18 to 24 who have sex with men in New York City, Upstate Ney York and Atlanta. The most notable findings include an overwhelming preference for masculine partners, accepting masculine partners as dominant in the sex act and leaving to them decisions about condom use, perceiving masculine men as low risk for HIV and feminine men as high risk.
"There may be no difference in HIV prevalence between masculine-looking and feminine-looking men, but because black MSM perceive masculine men as lower risk, their sexual encounters with such men may make HIV infection more likely," said investigator Jonathan Ellen, M.D., a pediatrician and teen health expert at Johns Hopkins Children's Center. In other words, even though young black MSM have unprotected sex just as often as others, they may be having unprotected sex in riskier ways with partners whose HIV status they often miscalculate, the researchers explain. The findings offer new insight into how black MSM judge risk based on perceptions of masculinity and can help inform public health campaigns to reduce new HIV infections in this disproportionately affected group. The findings, the researchers say, can also guide safe-sex conversations between primary care physicians and patients. Lead author, Dr. Errol L. Braves Place Coach on Administrative Leave ATLANTA, GA – Officials with the Atlanta Braves baseball team have placed pitching coach Roger McDowell on administrative leave while they investigate an incident in which he made crude gestures and homophobic remarks before a recent game being played in San Francisco. McDowell apologized for his statement. A spokesperson for team management said the investigation should be completed soon and punishment would be coordinated with Major League Baseball. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) called on the Braves and Major League Baseball to take “real disciplinary action and send the message that anti-gay slurs have no place in sports.”H
New Fed Regulations Protect Transgender Employees WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Labor has issued new regulations adding gender identity to the class of employment protections. According to their press release: The U.S. Department of Labor announced its full commitment to implementing equal employment opportunity policies for all department employees and applicants. The policies ensure equal protections for all employees and applicants regardless of race, color, reli-
gion, national origin, sex, including pregnancy and gender identity, age, disability, whether physical or mental, genetic information, status as a parent, sexual orientation, or other non-merit factor. New, robust statements signed by Secretary Solis include updated policies on prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex, including gender identity and pregnancy. Secretary Solis strongly supports fair equal employment opportunity policies, and creating diversity and fairness in the workplace. “I am expressing my personal commitment to ensure that the U.S. Department of Labor is a model workplace, free from unlawful discrimination and harassment, which fosters a work environment that fully utilizes the capabilities of every employee,” said Secretary Solis. “It is my goal that we achieve and maintain a high-quality, diverse workforce at all organizational levels throughout the department.”H
Sanford University Ends ROTC Ban PALO ALTO, CA – Sanford University has joined other large universities in the U.S. to lift its ban on allowing the ROTC on campus. Last week, the university’s faculty voted to invite the military’s Reserve Officers Training Corps back after almost 40 years of banishment. Sanford University, Harvard and other large universities barred the military program amid strong anti-war senti-
ments during the Vietnam War era and left the ban in place in protest of the military’s ban on gays and lesbians. Since December, when Congress repealed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, the universities have been inviting the ROTC back to recruit and operate on campus. The Stanford president will now begin discussions with the U.S. military about re-establishing ROTC on campus; however, there is no time frame of when ROTC programs will be available at Sanford again.H
Gay Marriage Bill Won’t Pass in Rhode Island PROVIDENCE, RI – Openly gay Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox admitted that a proposed bill to allow same-sex marriage in the state is dead for this legislative session. Fox, a Democrat from Providence who was a leading supporter of the bill, will instead sponsor a civil union bill giving samesex couples the same state rights as married couples. A spokesperson for Marriage Equality Rhode Island expressed her disappointment saying that civil unions are a halfmeasure and that her group would oppose any legislation that doesn’t extend full marriage rights. State Senate President Paiva Weed, a Democrat from Newport, is considered a key obstacle to the gay marriage legislation but supports civil unions and believes it will pass. Rhode Island

Governor Lincoln Chafee, an independent, announced that civil unions will be a step forward but he would prefer a law permitting gay marriage.H
Lesbian Gives Up on West Point WEST POINT, NY – An openly lesbian cadet who left West Point saying she could not live a lie any longer was rejected for re-admission because of the lingering military ban on gays in the military. She said she has decided to give up on her dream. Katherine Miller, now attending Yale University, says she plans to graduate from Yale then join the military through officer candidate school. She said that although she always wanted to serve alongside her comrades as an equal, she holds no resentment toward the military and looks forward to the day they deem it appropriate for her to put the uniform back on. West Point issued a statement explaining that it couldn't accept Miller because of the still-existing ban but hinting that re-entry wouldn't be a problem for her in the future. “While at the academy, Ms. Miller remained in good standing and had done exceptionally well academically, militarily and physically,” said Lt. Col. Sherri Reed, director of public affairs at West Point. “The choice to seek re-admission is available to her once the repeal process is completed.”H NEWS continued on Page 5

Preferred Hotel Group Goes For Gay Dollar The New York Times reported that the Preferred Hotel Group, a selection of over 800 independently owned properties worldwide, is rolling out a program to help its members welcome gay guests. So far, 100 of the member hotels have signed up for the program called “Preferred Pride”. Some of the hotels are the Post Ranch Inn (Big Sur, CA), Palazzo Sasso (Amalfi Coast, Italy) and Cape Royale Luxury Hotel and Residence (Cape Town, South Africa). To qualify, a property has to be certified by either the Travel Alternative Group or the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association. Preferred then conducts diversity training at the hotels on the needs of the gay traveler. Employees are suggested, for example, to ask same-sex duos checking in together if they prefer one king bed or two double ones, if they haven’t made a preference in advance. Rooms are stocked with publications aimed at gay readers. If two men are traveling together, the bathroom has extra male toiletries and two sets of large robes and slippers. And the concierge has a list of gay-friendly bars, clubs and restaurants on hand.H
Log Cabin Republicans Greeted with “Faggot” at their Convention A member of the Log Cabin Republicans was assaulted, being called “faggot,” during their convention at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas, last weekend. The gay Republican group is holding its national convention at the hotel. A spokesperson for the Dallas Police Department said the incident isn’t being treated as a hate crime, since the suspect’s use of “faggot” was provoked by the Log Cabin member and his friends. The DPD said that both the Log Cabin member and the suspect were intoxicated when the incident occurred around 1 a.m. The spokesperson added that the victim chose not to press charges meaning the case will be dropped.H
Human Rights Watch Condemns Murder of Lesbian Activist JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – Noxolo Nogwaza, a 24-year-old member of the Ekurhuleni Pride Organising Committee, a gay rights group, was stoned to death in Kwa Thema township outside Johannesburg on April 24, police said. lesbian activist who was stoned and stabbed to death is part of an "epidemic" of hate crimes against gays, Human Rights Watch said Tuesday. Human Rights Watch said evidence indicated Nogwaza was targeted because she was a lesbian, saying the murder "appears to be the latest in an epidemic of brutal homophobic attacks". "Nogwaza's death is the latest in a long series of sadistic crimes against lesbians, gay men, and transgender people in South Africa," Dipika Nath, a researcher for the rights group, said in a statement. Police spokesman Tshisikhawe Ndou said investigators do not currently consider the murder a hate crime. "We do not have evidence to conclude that the crime was committed against her based on the fact of her sexual orientation. It is just purely murder and rape that we are investigating at this stage," he told AFP. Human Rights Watch said Nogwaza was stabbed repeatedly with glass shards and left in an alley, her face and head disfigured by stoning. A beer bottle, a large rock and used condoms were found on and near her body, it said. Police have not made any arrests for the murder. Activists say lesbian women are often victims of "corrective rape" – forced sex with a man to "cure" their sexuality. A 2008 study found that 86 per cent of black lesbians in South Africa's Western Cape Province live in fear of sexual assault in a country that sees an estimated 500,000 rapes a year. Studies by the government-funded Medical Research Council in 2009 and 2010 found that one in four South African men admitted to committing rape, and one in three in north-central Gauteng Province, where Nogwaza and former midfielder for the national women’s side Eudy Simelane were attacked. Violence against lesbians is a pervasive problem in South Africa, whose progressive laws on gay rights coexist uneasily with a strong undercurrent of homophobia. Nogwaza's body was found in the same township where Simelane was gangraped and murdered in 2008. Human Rights Watch said Nogwaza's murder was "eerily reminiscent" of 29year-old Simelane's, for which two men were convicted in 2009. "Both were 'out' as lesbians in the community, both were tortured and sexually assaulted before being killed and the bodies of both were dumped in public places," it said.H

The organizers had originally planned a Parade of Flags on Wilton Drive, but the logistics of closing down the city’s main thoroughfare and getting the delegates to and from their expo booths was considered too time-consuming, so the decision was made to concentrate on producing the most successful expo possible. Immediately following the Trade Show, attendees will be treated to a free concert by Billboard recording artist Kristine W. That performance is expected to begin at 10 p.m., and has been underwritten in its entirety by Jackson Padgett and Mark Negrete, owners of Georgie’s Alibi and Bill’s. Says Padgett: “It is my hope that we can show the IGLTA that we are a united community that strives to be kind, welcoming, compassionate, empathic and generous to all.” Gay-owned bars and restaurants throughout Greater Fort Lauderdale are anticipating new guests who they hope to turn into friends, and potential returning patrons. “I hope our visitors go back home only to recommend to their clients and colleagues to visit one of Fort Lauderdale’s most unique gay sports bars,” says Jennifer Morales, Director of Marketing at Sidelines Sports Bar in Wilton Manors. “Sidelines will do our very best to welcome the IGLTA delegates and we hope our loyal customers also come out during this time to meet new friends and enjoy the diversity we all enjoy as gay men and women,” she adds. With so many businesses competing for a narrow market share, there has been no shortage of naysayers and critics pointing to the difficulties of bringing so many owners, and their divergent agendas, to the table for a common purpose. “Over the years, there have been a number of attempts to unite businesses to reach a common goal,” notes Scandals’ Kelley. “That goal, of course, is for all of us to achieve the maximum success for our business. Those attempts have not been successful until the RBC. While we still have a way to go to truly be united, the RBC has made tremendous strides in bringing us all together.” “The RBC was established to do just that,” agrees Padgett. “Open up communications between our community businesses in hopes to unite them, rather than allow the persistent separation by rumor and innuendo designed to do nothing but create a divided community and fuel hate and pain.” Does this mean that the Age of Miracles has arrived in the gayborhood? Offers Kelley: “The fact that a group of bar owners will sit in the same room and discuss how we can all work together for our common good is quite remarkable.”H
With less than one week remaining until the start of the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association’s (IGLTA) 28th Annual Convention, called “Unleashed,” Greater Fort Lauderdale’s LGBT-owned businesses are putting their final touches together in preparation for what is hoped to be a successful event, one that will pay dividends long after the attendees have returned to their respective cities and countries. While many business owners are aware that the impact to their bottom lines may not be felt until sometime in the future – Realtors®, for example, who may reap the rewards through rental lease agreements and the prospect of future sales – food service and hospitality businesses are hoping for the immediate returns that a successful, wellattended convention and its collateral events will engender. The dual goals of this sort of shortterm/long-range strategy require the dexterity of a goat navigating a treacherously narrow mountain path. While the delegates to the IGLTA Convention and their guests attend lectures and seminars, bar and restaurant owners will be planning for the weekend of May 13 through 15, when the largest number of visitors will be flowing into their establishments. “Every business, whether specifically involved in this event or not, will realize some benefits from this convention,” insists Ken Kelley, co-owner of Scandals Saloon and The Stable. “This is a most unique opportunity for all of us to showcase our city and our diversity.” The Rainbow Business Coalition (RBC) of Greater Fort Lauderdale has led the charge in making preparations for one of the largest planned events of the convention, the Friday May 13 Consumer Trade Show and Concert, both of which will be held at Hagen Park in Wilton Manors. The Trade Show – a highlight of IGLTA’s 27 past global Conventions – is an opportunity for the delegates to promote their businesses to Greater Fort Lauderdale’s LGBT community. According to John Tanzella, President and CEO of IGLTA, “this year’s travelthemed Consumer Trade Show is particularly dynamic thanks to the support of the RBC, which joined forces with IGLTA to produce the free expo in the heart of Wilton Manors.” Beginning at 6 p.m., residents and visitors will interact with IGLTA members from Brazil, Germany, Argentina, the United Kingdom, Japan, France, Spain, Canada, Peru, South Africa, Australia and other countries, representing a variety of travel-related industries, including tour operators, hoteliers, destina-

Young black males who have sex with males are five times more likely to be HIV-infected than white males of similar ages, Fields says. "We interviewed young black men to hear the stories behind these statistics," Fields said in a statement. “Most of the men interviewed said they preferred to partner with men they perceived as masculine and they allowed partners who were more masculine to control what sexual activity they engaged in and whether they used condoms,” Fields says. "We found that their beliefs about masculinity may affect their ability to protect themselves against HIV," Fields says. "For example, many believed that men who acted more feminine were at greater risk for HIV than men who acted more masculine." Jonathan Ellen, M.D., a pediatrician and teen health expert at Johns Hopkins Children's Center presented the findings of their study at the 2011 Pediatric Academic Societies Annual Meeting in Denver. In 2006, male-to-male sexual contact was associated with an estimated 63% of new HIV infections among black males. Data from CDC's National HIV Behavioral System show that, in 2008, 59% of HIV-infected black men who have sex with men (MSM) did not know they were infected compared with 26% of white MSM. Young black MSM need to be encouraged to be tested, to know their HIV status and to be educated that masculinity/femininity doesn’t equate with HIV status.H

He then opened a personal training studio, however, like many he suffered as the market and economy changed. “I let myself go and one day decided I needed to get back into shape. In the process of doing that, I realized I felt better and had more energy.” He said, “I realized my motivation for training people solely for profit was misplaced; I wanted to train them to benefit their lives. Which is why I decided to launch a foundation.” He continued, “I also felt it necessary to help people who are less fortunate and who are HIV +. Medications are so expensive; Broward County has one of the highest rates of new cases of HIV in the country. With government cutbacks on funding, there is an extreme need to support those people within our community.” The Foundation gives people support by leading the way to living a healthy and fit lifestyle, provides them an opportunity to meet other people in similar positions and helps them build friendships.

Gary Smythe is a trustee of the Foundation and the COO of the Fifth Street Counselling Center says, “I think the Foundation is a wonderful idea – another way we can contribute to the community in a positive way and bring something that promotes a healthy lifestyle to people who otherwise may not have the opportunity or access to it.” His sentiments were echoed by Ed Cook who works to support the Foundation by participating in the In the Biz Fitness Challenge, which will donate all proceeds to the Foundation. He says of the program, “It’s a way of giving back to those that have helped me over the years, to help them live a happier and healthier life and to be honest. It is incredibly gratifying and rewarding to watch people change their lives.” The Law Offices of Dean Trantalis are handling all legal matters for the Foundation, which will be a 501 (c)(3) corporation, as the organization is offering a service and is educationally orientated. The application is in process and, once approved, all the donations made to the Foundation will be tax deductible for donors. Donations can still be made and classes may still go ahead prior to approval. Dean Trantalis says, “I think it is a wonderful opportunity for people who fall within the mission statement and who suffer the challenges of their disease. The Foundation
is there to assist. It will be a wonderful component in the vitality of the community.” As stated above, Brian, along with Ed Cook, Melissa Binkley and Ernesto Caballero, run the In the Biz Fitness Challenge at Island City Health & Fitness on Wilton Drive. The challenge encourages local businesses to create teams and compete to win the ‘most fit’ in eight weeks. With group one-hour sessions on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, this program has brought the community together in an extremely positive way. By promoting an In the Biz healthy lifestyle, the team has worked with many of the bartenders in the community, offering a healthy alternative to the dangerous lifestyle so often associated with those in the industry. Russ Johansenn, a bartender at Atomic/Boom, says of the challenge, “I started back in January. I was part of the first session. I re-joined to do it in April because I lost 15 lbs. in 3 months. It’s a great program to aid people in keeping their lifestyle healthy and keeping them fit, allowing them to achieve their goals, whatever they may be.” Reece Durham, owner of the gym, says “I am proud to be part of such an amazing foundation that is giving back to the community in such a positive and much needed way.” Melissa Binkley said, “I am excited because we have quite a few people who have returned; we have people that lost 15-20 pounds. It’s a great motivator.” Of the Foundation, she says, “I think it is a necessity and the best thing we can do for our community; fitness should not be just for people

Oakland Park already has the Peter Pan Diner and, though not a gay restaurant, has a huge gay following. G-Resort is planning on building their resort and there is currently a bid on a large apartment building on Oakland Park Boulevard just east of Dixie Highway with plans to turn that into a high-end gay guest house. They say that the concept is to take advantage of the high gay population of Wilton Manors and combine it with the high gay population of Oakland Park, which is larger as Oakland Park is a much larger city. Plus there is a big push
for the gay vacation dollar. “We also have the advantage of the vacation travel dollar,” said Yunis. “That helps support all of this. That’s important and to me; that’s why Oakland Park and Wilton Manors are going to be long term.” “People don’t come here to die,” said Yunis. “They come here for a second life.” Yunis himself moved here 4 years ago. He’s previously a developer who has built, among other things, shopping centers and office buildings. He says he first came here for the beach and warm weather but appreciates that wherever he goes in Broward County, he can be himself. “Whether I go to a restaurant on U.S. 1 or one in Wilton Manors, it’s all available to me. I don’t have to be a gay man – I’m just another man here.” They are also trying to attract different types of businesses to Oakland Park. They feel that some of the businesses
that would thrive in Oakland Park would be a cooking school, a kinetic art gallery, a community gardening center, a yoga studio, a health food store, small, yet upscale grocery store and, as they described, vintage anything. Lanham and Yunis feel their job is to come up with ideas and contact companies and show them that Oakland Park is an attractive option. They would also like to be the ‘go-to” people for people who have business ideas. “There are so many different ways to approach business in this kind of economy,” said Lanham. “In this economy, people are learning to be more resourceful and taking advantage of spending down instead of spending up. And self-sufficiency is becoming more important. So, I think if we can actively recruit and attract businesses that are going to allow people to somehow learn something, or be a part of
something bigger than themselves, that’s going to be part of the success formula,” said Lanham. Real Estate Recovery is also looking toward partnering with organizations with common goals. They currently have a relationship with the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the Poverello Center. “We want to be a good neighbor, not just a business,” said Lanham. “As a small company, our values are your values and we can support each other. Friends Without Benefits Friendship is so important to creating a balanced life – crucial, in fact. Friends will enhance your life. Recently, I started thinking about friendships and the different types I have had since I have been in Florida. There are so many types of friends – we have all had them: The NBFF, the BFF, the acquaintance, the friend with benefits, the strategic alliance, the childhood buddy – and then the friend that before you know it you have been with for years and years and you can’t imagine life without them. Florida, particularly in the gay area, is a really odd place for friends ; making them, having them and keeping them is remarkably difficult. An acquaintance is easy – those guys you always see at the bar who you wave to, or even sit and chew the cud with over a beer are a dime a dozen. Then there is the barman, many believe he is a BFF – sometimes yes, more often no. So what is the issue? Why are friendships so hard to have in South Florida? Well, first and foremost, Florida is one of the most transient places in the world. Particularly as one of the top tourist areas globally for the gay community, many locals say you can’t create lasting friendships here because of the lack of stability. People who move here move away, are here on vacation or are snowbirds who are only here for a short time. On one hand this is fair enough; however, with social media and smart phones, you can keep in touch at the touch of the button. You have heard me mention many times that I am in touch with my friends all over the world, amusingly some of them I speak to more when we are apart than when we lived in the same country! Another cause of what I consider the all-too-common ‘highly conditional’ friendships is that the community is rife with flaky people, those who don’t dare commit in case something better comes along. I have definitely experienced that. I remember when I first came to Florida
Alex Vaughn I met a group of seemingly nice people and we arranged to go for drinks at America’s Backyard. I arrived fashionably late and waited for over half an hour. When I eventually called to see where they were, it transpired that they had all made other plans. They apologized profusely of course, but it didn’t change the fact that I had never experienced such unbelievable behavior before. Then there are those who ‘don’t know my work schedule.’ Tell me please who doesn’t know their work schedule the day before? I am sure every one of you knows a flaky friend, the one you just can’t rely on, and they sadly seem to be the easiest people to find here. Then there is the drama; now, we all laugh and joke about it, that we love it and, sure, who doesn’t get caught up in some drama from time to time? Drama queens, however, make friendships damn hard. The drunken outburst in a bar once or twice is amusing and we have all found ourselves a few gin and tonics

down yelling and hollering like mad men, but after a while its gets old and tired. Friendships are like relationships: They require work and the rewards speak for themselves. I have heard people say friendship is being there for someone during the bad times. Sure it is, but if it’s all crying drama what do you get out of it? Being a friend – like a relationship – is about compromise and joint effort. Perhaps that’s why deep friendships aren’t popular here – too much effort … or, more upsetting, there is a lack of trust. To have any kind of relationship between two people, a degree of trust must exist. The community doesn’t trust easily. A friend is one of the most priceless possessions a man can have, and in other gay communities globally, friends step into the place of families that may no longer be around for one reason or another. Friends provide support networks that we all need. I have heard too many stories of people who suddenly look around and realize they don’t have any friends. How can that be? That should never happen to anyone, and yet here it does; loneliness here is more prevalent than love without a doubt, and the assumption is you are lonely without a partner. I think even with a partner, without real friends you will always be lonely. This week, try and make a friend; it’s an effort, but it’s so worth it. Find out what they like, go to dinner and make it clear you are looking for a strictly platonic friendship; it’s important to keep those rules clear or you will have an imploding disaster on your hands. Offer your advice, take criticism, be there at the end of the phone, jostle with them, banter, laugh, cry, the works – but share it, equally. H

Fort Lauderdale Father Condemns Blood Ban Policy Blood Donations Discriminatory Against Gays By PETE O’NEIL For most people, donating blood is as simple as rolling up a sleeve. But not for gay men. Since 1983, the Food and Drug Administration has barred them from donating. The F.D.A. has re-examined the ban over the years, but maintains that the restriction is necessary to keep the blood supply safe and untainted by H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS. Critics say the ban is scientifically and medically unjustified and that it unfairly singles out gay men. Many blood banks have spoken
out against the rule. Last week, Fort Lauderdale resident Pete O’Neil received notice that his daughter’s school was hosting a blood drive on May 2nd, 2011, and all parents were encouraged to participate. Free pizza and free comedy show tickets awaited the donor parents. Later in the day, he had to explain to his twelve year old adopted daughter, Amber, that he would not be part of the blood drive since he was gay. “I certainly see this as a health issue

first, but also as a discriminatory policy that in the wrong setting makes families feel out of place in their community” said Pete O’Neil. “I had to go into a teachable moment and explain that my government thinks my blood is tainted. I think this policy is harmful and makes no sense,” he said. “Turning away perfectly good donors gives an incorrect and harmful message about transmission risk. The F.D.A. initially banned gay men from giving blood when the risk of AIDS from transfusions was recognized. At the time, it was considered the best way to keep the blood supply safe. The restriction applies to any man who acknowledges having had sex with another man since 1977. Gay rights groups, blood banks and many doctors and scientists consider the ban inconsistent with the restrictions placed on other groups and antiquated in light of the advances that have been made in testing donated blood. Donated blood is routinely screened for H.I.V. and other infectious agents. The F.D.A. employs multiple safeguards, including donor evaluations and computerized blood testing, to ensure that infected blood is not distributed. One recent study says that more than 200,000 pints of blood would be available if the ban was lifted. Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, found that if the ban were lifted in favor of a 12-month deferral, an additional 219,000 pints of blood would be donated each year. While that would not significantly increase the available blood supply, many experts say the ban should be lifted on the grounds of fairness and scientific consistency. As an openly gay man in a fifteen year committed relationship, Mr. O’Neil has fewer risks of AIDS then several other
current donor groups. As a result of being denied permission to donate blood at the blood drive and, since Mr. O’Neil is not infected with HIV and had no other reason for being denied permission to donate, he is considering filing a civil rights discrimination complaint against the local school district. “Given the shortage of blood nationwide, this seems like a major oversight. Clearly new blood collection initiatives are needed, and hopefully methods can be found that will not place people in
uncomfortable situations. The policy is a discriminatory relic of an earlier era.” said O’Neil. He added, “Being gay does not automatically mean you have AIDS. It’s just blind hatred trying to use science to justify it. One easy and immediate improvement would be to train blood drive organizers, obviously well intentioned people, to understand that some people cannot donate blood”. Gay men, in all practical senses, are prohibited from donating blood in the United States because of a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) policy first formulated in the mid-1980s, when the HIV epidemic was new, the nation gripped in panic, and HIV testing still in development. In recent years, this policy has come into sharper focus because individual gay men, but not, notably, major gay or HIV organizations, have raised objections to local blood drives as discriminatory. The debate has become so heated at many universities that several now prohibit the Red Cross or other blood banks from organizing blood drives on their campuses. The pol-
icy is based on the nasty idea that gay blood is "dirty" or that all gay men have HIV. Mr. O’Neil's partner and Amber’s Papa, Mr. Maugeri wanted him to not make a big deal out of Monday’s blood drive. He is concerned that the family just recently relocated to Fort Lauderdale from the Vero Beach area and does not want to make waves in their new home town. Amber’s “Aunt” Deb offered to go and make a donation in place of her father. Pete agreed that it is also first about their child. He promised his partner no 70’s-style picketing at the school Monday from local gay activists. “There does come a time in your life when you feel the need to stand-up and point out bad public policy, not give up on public education. There is a moral duty as a parent not to stand idle by and not react to problems you see around your family. I think part of America’s ill now is that many of us have given up – decided we can’t fight the system or make real positive change” said O’Neil.H

Paddleboarding... The Fastest Growing Sport on the Water By RYAN DIXON Where do you go on your day off when you live in a seaside city? The mall? A movie? If the people here are anything like me, they head to the beach. And who wouldn't? With a record breaking heat wave going on this year, getting to the beach at eight in the morning isn't as bad as one might think. With the help of Precision Paddleboards and top notch paddleboard instructor Ashley Clarkin, I grabbed my boyfriend and set out to try my hand at the fastest growing sport on water. According to Wikipedia, Thomas Edward Blake is given the credit of pioneering the paddleboard construction in the 1930's. The construction of paddleboards has changed since the 30's, going from redwood to polyurethane foam, but the drive and love of the paddleboarding community has been a constant stay. Even though you may not be able to rattle off professional paddleboarders when asked doesn't mean you should discount the sport any. Ashley put Justin and I through the ringer. While I spent more time in the water than Justin did, my arms were just as sore the following day. When standing on the board, you use the paddle to propel yourself forward, essentially pulling your whole
body mass along the water. Starting off on your knees, you eventually stand completely vertical. Bending your knees helps with pulling your body forward, as well as helping you maintain your balance. I said Justin and I were put through the ringer on our first time out because ocean water is rougher than the water on the inlets on which Clarkin also gives lessons. People usually start out there and move to the open ocean but, according to Clarkin, the conditions were “just too perfect to pass up. The water is so hard to ride in the winter.” Trying to stay up on my board was much tougher than I thought it was going to be. Out of the two of us, I would say I am way more athletic. He seemed to pick up the paddling techniques very fast, while I was still trying to stand up on my board. When asked why people should try paddleboarding, Ashley laughed and said, “It's for both the adventurous and non adventurous. Paddleboarding is a fun and safe way to explore the water”. That just goes to show that every sport isn't for everyone, but everyone should try things at least once. I am in no way discouraged by my performance on my board, and I most definitely cannot wait to get back out on the water again.H

Real Estate Investors Re-Build the Market Anyone who has attempted to buy a foreclosure or short sale property under $200,000 has likely competed with investors, whether they were aware of it or not. Investors are having a great time right now purchasing properties when prices are at record lows, and rental rates are increasing. The impact of lower purchase prices and increasing rents at the same time has dramatic impact on return on investment (ROI) that far exceeds

nearly any other investment return available today. This good news for investors is good news for all of us. As investors buy and improve properties, they may be sneaking a few good deals away from buyers with their frequently all-cash offerings, but overall the impact of investor purchases is depleting inventory and improving our real estate values. It’s great news, and overall will contribute even more to our market recovery. Anyone who has considered investing in real estate does not need to be wealthy or use only cash – there a lot of ways to improve your financial position by investing in real estate. Great financing from lenders or sellers is available. Generally speaking, there are three key ways to make money in real estate investing. The most important right now, in my opinion, is cash flow. By this, I am referring to the amount of money that is paid each month and year by tenants in either residential or commercial properties that can be considered ROI. Second, tax benefits are incredible, and should be clarified by a tax professional, but I consider these to be second to the “income” aspect. Depreciation, interest expense, repairs and more are all things that your tax expert can use to increase and improve your financial position. Lastly, is the “exit strategy”. I personally believe the resale of investment properties in 5-10 years will be so dramatic that anyone buying now will become

wealthy very quickly; but to be conservative I recommend my investors to buy for cash flow and look forward to resale returns as “bonuses”. The first type of investor is perhaps the most familiar to most of you, and may actually be you. People who own property and decide to keep that property and buy another one will end up far ahead of their current position as the market continues to improve. Of course, the decisions have to be sound and facilitated by a Realtor® with experience with investing. I recommend consulting with a Certified Investment Agent (CIAS) and someone who sells a lot of income properties. Naturally, they will know more than the average Realtor® and help you create a strategy that fits your resources and objectives. Second is the type of investor who buys perhaps 1 or 2 properties per year and is usually focused on cost per unit (duplexes being two units, triplexes being three units, etc.). Regardless of the number of units, I recommend investors determine a goal or standard for how much money per year they expect from their purchase and clarify that to their Realtor®. This may seem like a lot of properties to buy per year, but it is happening a lot more than most people realize. The returns from the stock market generally do not compare to the potential return from income properties and investors are moving money from the stock market into real estate right now. Last are the savvy investors who are buying bulk and quickly. Some of these portfolio investors are buying several properties per month, making improvements to maximize rents, and then buying more. The details of this category – and perhaps in any category, of rent collection, repairs, tenant relations, and the occasional eviction – can become too overwhelming, so many investors favor property managers. I have sold investment properties for years and have gained so much experience in the area that it became clear in order to best serve investors I needed to provide a property management service, so I have opened a separate business entity so my investors do not have to be overwhelmed in the dayto-day details of tenant management. Instead, they can receive reports and deposits into their checking and savings accounts. Anyone who is interested in real estate investing should consult with an expert as soon as possible. I do not recall there ever being a better opportunity to benefit from the short sales, foreclosures and rising rental rates than right now for investors. H

What are your thoughts on proposed funding cuts for patients with HIV/AIDS? State funding for treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS is an important component to overall community health. Ongoing state budget cuts not only impact major HIV prevention and treatment centers, but also community programs that support disease prevention. Impact of funding cuts may adversely impact certain persons living with HIV/AIDS, as some treatments can cost up to $2000 a month or more for ongoing therapy. What steps have you taken to help within the community? We take great pride in helping to foster a true sense of community and stewardship. While we just getting settled into our new location, we look forward to grow ourselves as a pillar of the community
and advocate of the diverse patients we serve. What do you think is necessary to ensure affordable medication for everyone? GLBT WeHo + 90210MG Out in Los Angeles, Part 1 of 3 By PAUL RUBIO At the base of the Hollywood Hills and adjacent to Beverly Hills, West Hollywood (WeHo) is L.A.’s most progressive enclave and arguably the epicenter of America’s gay universe. On a day-to-day basis, the streets of WeHo teem with gorgeous people and edgy fashions, making the true attraction of visiting here a bit of recreation time on the eye-candy playground and the ever so delightful judgment carousel. Over my next three columns, I’ll be drowning myself in the delightful pretention, the trends, the opulence, the foodie revolution, and the hidden gems that make the “City of Angels” so fantastically special, centered on its hot gayborhood, WeHo, and its oh-so awesome neighboring zip code, 90210. My L.A. experience began when I landed at LAX bright and early and was met upon arrival by my driver, Denise, from Wilshire Limousine ( w w w. w i l s h i r e l i m o u s i n e . c o m , 310.846.5147). Dressed to the nines, Denise commandeered my luggage cart and escorted me to our snazzy BMW 750iL, whereupon we breezed through L.A’s back roads, avoiding traffic of the 405 and the 101 at all costs. My newest designer sunglasses in hand, I exited the cab at the flawless Andaz West Hollywood (www.westhollywood.andaz.hyatt.com, 323.656.1234). The Andaz West Hollywood is Hyatt’s much awaited youthful re-invention of the former Sunset Strip “Riot Hyatt,” a hotbed of 70s and 80s rock n’ roll angst and the long-haired rocker appetite for hotel destruction. The new Andaz is fresh, funky, fun, and full of freebees, offering a strategically conceptualized
product that bridges gaps between generations. The contemporary design of common spaces is highly detailed while rooms are simple and understated. Guest rooms boast spacious sunrooms with floor to ceiling windows, peering over the Sunset Strip and vaster Hollywood panoramas (from floors 6 and up). Free Illy espresso, wine, and rotating snacks lure guests at all hours to the lobby, while the complimentary (nonalcoholic) mini bar gives new meaning to raiding the fridge. Following check-in, I enjoyed a day of leisure strolling the crossroads of Melrose Avenue and Robertson and Beverly Boulevards. Dubbed “the Art, Fashion, and Design District” (www.avenueswh.com/business-listings) these blocks are home to hundreds of design showrooms and big name fashion houses like Christian Louboutin, Stella McCartney, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Balenciaga, Alberta Ferretti, as well as eclectic boutiques like Alpha and Kitson Men. Eager to fit into my hottest (and tightest) threads, a light lunch was in order at Fresh East (www.fresheast.com, 310.859.9989), an organic restaurant that takes the concept of “going green” to an entire new level. Everything at Fresh East screams sustainable, from the utensils made of recycled fibers, to the plates made of palm leaves, to the water-saving urinals. As the name suggests the restaurant’s Pan-Asian delights deliver the ultimate in freshness, and they happen to be amazing. I had the “5 Spice Glazed Salmon-“ organic Salmon, brown rice, asparagus, 5 spice glaze – and washed it down with fresh coconut water.
As I walked north towards Sunset, the Rolls Royces raced by, and I had my first big celebrity sighting of the day – Mark Wahlberg (yummy!). Passing through the scores of beautiful strangers, shiny cars, and the juxtaposition of wealth and grit, I arrived at Sunset Plaza, the trendy stretch of road in the middle of the Sunset Strip that’s been a L.A. hotspot since the 1930s. You could see the paparazzi camped out at the Coffee Bean, just waiting for Demi Moore to come get her caffeine fix. And you could overhear the adorable young Hollywood crowd in oversized sunglasses having the most trivial and pointless of conversations. Next up was a rooftop pub-crawl to the most extravagant rooftops in L.A. I met up with friends on the roof of the London West Hollywood. From there, we proceeded to happy hour drinks on the roof of the Thompson Beverly Hills, and finally returned to the Andaz West Hollywood rooftop. It was only natural to end my first day/night in L.A. with another A-list celebrity sighting. Back in the Andaz lobby, who walked by me but none other than Leonardo Di Caprio, heading to the hotel restaurant, RH, to dine on phenomenal southwestern French cuisine!H

Mom Means Home! By MICHAEL FRENCH
Though we are all very different, there’s one common thread which binds every single one of us. Every human being lived the first nine months of life, courtesy of their mother’s body, in the most secure environment they’ll ever know. The vast majority of us in the GLBT community found a safe haven from an often judgmental world under the umbrella of our mother’s conditional love. The young woman, barely an adult herself, who gave me this wonderful life at the tender age of 21, was truly a mother to me in every sense of the word. Confidant, best friend, tutor, mentor and my most ardent
advocate. She was a renaissance woman, way ahead of her time. Breast cancer survivor of 30 years, she went back to school at the age of 52 to be a legal secretary! Mom could lay down sod in the morning sporting jeans and curlers (remember those?). That same night, she’d don her pearls and a black dress for an evening out on the town, looking like a million bucks. She was my own Grace Kelly! Among my close circle of friends, there’s only one whose mother lives in South Florida. For some of my friends, they can “visit” their Mom with prayers and warm memories. That’s the way I get to “see” my mother, who left this world four years ago. Just because my mother is deceased doesn’t stop me from wanting to celebrate her life and the infinite contributions her legacy continues to make to the life she gave me. What better place to honor Mom than at home? I had this idea: Since none of my friends could be with their mom, we should have a Mother’s Day Party. Not that we need an excuse to have a party, but who better to celebrate than Mom? Each one of my friends made one of their mother’s favorite dishes. I asked everyone to bring a framed photo of them together with their mother to place by the dish on the buffet. The food was beyond delicious. We all expanded our pallets! I found out the favorite flower of my friends’ mothers and put them in a small vase on the table
at each friend’s seat. The table was beautiful and a heartfelt tribute to all our mothers. At the table was an empty chair symbolizing all those who we wished could be there. It’s a tradition I began years ago. We all made or brought our mothers’ favorite beverage. Wow, there were several surprises! Those mavens of the 50’s tilted more than bridge club daquiris and punch! (They didn’t need vodka that cost sixty dollars a bottle either.) During dessert we played “Stories”. Each of us told a funny story about our mother. It was great to reawaken and appreciate memories that may have grown misty under the shrouds of time. There was lots of laughter and some tears too, not from sadness, but the joy of remembering being loved. There are other women in our lives who have been “Mothers” to us. My Aunt Marilyn, Mom’s sister, is that to me! I’m blessed! Whether we were lucky enough to have a grandmother, aunt, whoever she was, who nurtured our soul and made us feel loved, remember her on this Mother’s Day and thank her, every day! So, all our mothers, wherever or whoever she might be, were there. They were at the table in a smiling photo, with the food they used to prepare for us with love, the flowers that brightened their eyes, the cocktails that made them silly, the stories we told and, most of all, within each of us. For it’s there, in our hearts, where our

mother lives and will continue to live on. Call your mother! When she’s gone, there will be a million times when you wish you could! HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY MOM!H

jean’s kitchen Paella There are three widely known types of paella: Valencian paella, seafood paella and mixed paella. Valencian paella consists of white rice, green vegetables, meat (rabbit, chicken, and duck), land snails, beans and seasoning. Seafood paella replaces meat and snails with seafood and omits beans and green vegetables. Mixed paella is a free-style combination of meat, seafood, and vegetables. Other key ingredients include saffron and olive oil. You can use a big frying pan for this dish. I have one I put directly on the BBQ so I can be with my guests and have a drink with them while preparing dinner. • 10 pieces Split Chicken Wings • ½ Lb Shrimp • 1 Lb Assorted Mussels and Clams • 1 Can of Peeled Tomatoes • 4 Cloves Garlic chopped • 3-6 Red Bell Peppers (diced) plus a handful of strips reserved to use as garnish • ½ Cup Frozen Peas • 1 tsp. Saffron Threads • Extra Virgin Olive Oil • 2 cups Paella Rice • 4-6 cups Fish Bouillon. • Salt to taste
Heat extra virgin olive oil in a paellera. Sear the red bell pepper strips for the garnish and set aside. Sear the shrimp and set aside. Season the wings lightly with salt and sauté until golden brown. Add onions, garlic and the diced bell peppers. Sauté until vegetables are tender. Add the canned tomatoes, smash ‘em and sauté. This mixture is called the sofrito. Add rice. Braise rice until covered with sofrito. Add broth. Taste and add salt if necessary. Add saffron and mix well. Simmer until rice is almost cooked. Top with the shellfish and the peas. Continue simmering until rice and crustaceans are finished cooking. Garnish with the seared red bell pepper strips. You are the chef.

Summer Starts May 6th At Least It Does At the Movies

By WARREN DAY The first sign of spring, as we've all heard, is the first sighting of a robin. So what about summer? Well, ever since "Star Wars" rocketed out on Memorial Day weekend in 1977, it has become the first warm-weather release of a blockbuster, except Hollywood keeps moving that date up. This year's summer – or at least movies' biggest boxoffice – season begins for the USA on May 6 with the 3-D thunderous opening of Thor. Taken from the Marvel Comic series and costing the studio a whopping 150 million dollars, you can see it at your local theater for a bit less. Based loosely on Norse mythology, Thor is the God of Thunder who is exiled to earth from Asgard (think of it roughly as Mt. Olympus) by Odin (think of him as the Scandinavian Zeus). And, as often happens in polytheism, the gods connive and clash with each other, with us poor humans as pawns. If this strikes you as not particularly newsy (a movie based on a comic seems to come out every few weeks), then chew on this: Thor is receiving some of the best reviews of the year, currently receiving 94% kudos from the often jaded critics. Heavens to Betsy!, as the
gods might say. What's also clear is that in the universe of genres that make up our movie fare, there's never been a time when all types were ascending the heights. Instead, one or two genres will shine for a decade or two, and then be replaced by another. In the 1930's, the gangster film was going great guns; in the 1940’s and 1950's, it was musicals and biblical epics; and in our present time, it's animated films and movies either based on comic books (The Dark Knight, Spiderman, Ironman or on their close relative, fantasy-based stories, such as Avatar, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter). If you aren't seeing animated films and comic book/fantasy ones, then you're missing some of the most creative and entertaining times to be had at the movies today. Thor has all the markings of a crossover hit, meaning it will attract and appeal to people who normally don't favor such films. It has Academy Award winning stars Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins, it's directed by Kenneth Branagh of Shakespeare renown and, in the title role, is a 27-year old named Chris Hemsworth, who the critics are predicting will be a major star, and whose poster is already adorn-

ing many a gay man's wall. As Thor, he's an absolute Adonis (If I might be allowed mixed mythologies!). Other comic book movies coming this summer include Captain America with Chris Evans (The buzz is good), and The Green Lantern with Ryan Reynolds (Hitting the buzzsaw is more likely here). Really good comic book movies, as Thor surely is, taps into the mythos of our imagination, into our deepest day-
dreams, where our fantasies are fulfilled, where good triumphs and the villains come to a glorious end – that is, until they're needed for a sequel!H

Tone Your Body and Soothe Your Mind By TOM BONANTI If you’re looking for a fitness routine that will tone your body and soothe your mind, you may want to try yoga. This 5000-year old workout involves moving in and out of a series of positions and postures while focusing on relaxing breathing techniques. Yoga will improve flexibility and strengthen core muscles while relieving stress and tension. Whether you’re a couch potato, a muscle bound body builder or a seasoned gymnast, there’s a yoga workout just for you. According to fitness professional and yoga instructor, Kerci Stroud, the aim of yoga is to create harmony between the mind and body. This low impact workout won’t just give you inner peace – it will also give you great muscles. After a few sessions, many folks feel stronger, more flexible and less stressed. Yoga also improves balance and posture, sharpens concentration and makes you feel centered. Yoga workouts run the gamut from slow and serene to fast and sweaty. Whether you want to improve muscle tone and lose fat, heighten your inner
awareness or all of the above, you can choose a workout to meet your fitness goals. Beginners start with Hatha Yoga, which teaches the basic poses in a relaxed manner. Lyengar Yoga is more precise and involves focusing on proper muscle alignment by holding poses for extended periods of time. Ashtanga Yoga will kick your butt with its athletic routine of moving through a series of killer positions in rapid succession. A popular form of yoga is Bikram or “hot” yoga. This 26 pose routine will make you sweat, since it is practiced in a room that is around 100 degrees Fahrenheit. You can find classes in all of the above yoga styles at yoga studios and many gyms. Classes can be private or in a group and usually last an hour to 90 minutes. Yoga instructors insist upon certain etiquette: no shoes or cell phones! Many experts suggest that yoga is best on an empty stomach. If you’re a little squeamish about twisting around like a pretzel in public, you can try yoga at home with one of the
many books, DVD’s or on-line tutorials available. This way you can work freely at your own pace. The downside is that you won’t have a seasoned guru on hand to help you correct and perfect your poses. What you wear to your yoga class is important, unless of course your bag is naked yoga. In that case, arrive tidy, groomed and fresh. Otherwise wear clothes that are comfy and unrestrictive. To create a dynamite fitness plan, you can compliment your weekly yoga sessions with cardio workouts. The muscles you build in yoga class will enhance your cardio and your cardio will build up your endurance for yoga. For seasoned body builders who just can’t give up the iron, some low impact yoga will make you more flexible – and greater flexibility translates into fewer injuries and better workouts.H

The View from the Sidelines Laurie Whittaker and Marty Kildea, proprietors of Sidelines Sports Bar in Wilton Manors, are celebrating the 5th Anniversary of their destination establishment beginning Thursday, May 12, and continuing through that weekend, with contests, prizes and drink specials from open to close. Five years is an impressive number, and a tribute to the hard work, perseverance and fine attention to detail the bar owners demand for their customers. (An arguably even more impressive count is the number of years Whittaker and her long-time partner, Sidelines marketing director Jennifer Morales, have been together, having met during their salad days on the campus of Florida State University: 30-plus years and counting. Do you think it will last?) Sidelines also recently began offering valet parking service both for their customers and visitors to Wilton Drive who are looking for a safe, secure place to park. The sports bar teamed up with Gelato Station owners Nick Berry and Shawn Bombard and other neighbors to pool their resources and offer valet. $5 gets you parked all night, with the service offered seven days a week starting at 4 p.m.
