By Charlotte Varnes, 2018-201

Way back in the beginning of September, all members of the FJCL Executive Board and the State Planning Committee met at the Wyndham in Orlando for Fall Planning meetings. The Planning Committee held their meeting on Friday night and the next morning. The FJCL Executive Board met separately with CAF VP Rachel Robison, FSCL Advisor Kyle McGimsey, and FSCL President Johnathan Pierce, to discuss the Fall and State Latin Fora. on Friday, later joining in with CAF on Saturday morning. Despite spending a little over 12 hours together, us officers accomplished a lot and had a great time. Here are the top ten parts of Fall Planning: 1. Soon after Mr. Mize drove us to the Wyndham, Esha, Taylor, and I went to meet up with Devin and Maya for pizza at Blazin’ Tomatoes. Unfortunately, we sent Maya and her dad about three different wrong names for the restaurant, but fortunately we all ended up in the same place! It was so awesome for several of us on the board to finally see each other again after Nationals, and going for pizza was a great way for us to hang out before the meeting. 2. After Blazin’ Tomatoes, we headed to CVS to buy some snacks before the meeting. The Wyndham property, aside from hosting Latin Forum, is obviously a tourist mecca, and the CVS carried lots and lots of touristy Orlando items. Maya decided to buy all of us corny but cute Disney keychains with our first initials on them, which was a sweet way for all of us to match and stay connected after Fall Planning ended.

3. We went on two snack trips on Friday, leaving us with plenty of food for sitting through the long meetings. It was fun to share snacks while deciding on Ludi events and looking through contest details. 4. When we all bought snacks, Matt decided to go for some weird, spicy hot dog. He said he’d tried it before, but he really did not look happy eating it (see the photos of his distress on the next page), and the rest of us were dying of laughter the whole time.

5. Following our last meeting of the night, all of us girls got together and had a great time watching funny YouTube videos, talking about life at home, and even discussing (surprise!) JCL. It was nice to have downtime to spend with them, since we spend so much of our time together running fora and planning out every detail of our next event. 6. Deciding on the States theme was a great bonding activity for the officers and it was hard to choose between the several different quotes that were brought to the table. We’re excited about which quote we chose, and we’re excited to share it with the rest of the FJCL come spring! 7. Choosing all of the activities for Fall Forum was fun: This was the first time all of us, aside from Matt and Esha, had planned a forum. It was a great learning experience and a preview for what lies ahead with State Forum. 8. Saturday’s joint meeting with planning committee and the FJCL officers was successful, despite how exhausted all of us officers were from the day before. We were absolutely worn out, but at least we knew all of us were in it together. We had some Wawa iced coffee too, so that was a plus. 9. I may be a little biased on this one, but I was super happy that we decided to hold our Spring Planning at Esha’s, which is only 20 minutes from where Taylor and I live. Although we’ll be together less than a day, I’m beyond excited to have all of the officers come to Brevard County in March and see all that Region V has to offer! 10. Not to be cheesy, but every single moment spent with the other officers was the best part of Fall Planning. Nationals, Fall Planning, Fall Forum, Spring Planning, and State are really the only times we get to spend together during the year, and all of the fora tend to be pretty hectic, leaving the plannings to be a much calmer time for all of us to hang out. Whether going through every minor detail of the Olympika sheet, heading on snack runs to Wawa, or trying to act serious when Maya was taking pictures of us “working,” everything we did together was fun.

This November, more than three hundred JCLers embarked on an odyssey from every corner of the state to Winter Springs High School for the annual Fall Forum. After reuniting and catching up with old friends, we kicked off the day with an assembly and went straight into testing. But not everyone took tests: In the meantime, the FJCL officers offered new students the opportunity to meet with all the officers, ask any questions, and learn all about the JCL.

Left: Anya AitSahlia taking her tests in the auditorium.

At the end of testing, students rushed to their first rounds of Certamen or to the cafeteria for Papa John’s, Pub Subs, cookies, snacks, and drinks. Once they’d stocked up, everyone split off to the activities that interested them most, whether that was service, attending workshops, playing games, or spectating Certamen. We offered one workshop for people who’d never played before and another for people who wanted to learn more about Dramatic Interpretation and designing their own costumes. Thank you to Geoff Revard and Adam Williams for planning the Certamen and Dramatic Interpretation workshops.

Back in the cafeteria, we painted Kindness Rocks to be distributed among the community, and our Vice President Taylor collected toiletries for the Hygiene for the Homeless initiative. The Ludi bros duked it out in Bellum Aquae (a water balloon competition), “Gladiator of the Rising Sun” (or Ninja), Impromptu Art, and more. Looking around at any time you could spot people laughing, making chalk art, practicing questions, or making the most of the cookie arrangement.

Fall Forum was a great way to kick off the school year for the FJCL, and the best way to truly recapture the feeling is to check out our Historian Maya Harris’s recap on YouTube. Thanks to everyone who came and helped out, especially the hardworking sponsors who helped their amazing students attend. We can’t wait to see you next year!

Region one was filled with many notable JCL moments that helped fulfill the need for

both spirit and service in the area. For our first service project of the school year, Region 1 collected over 400 school supply items which were donated to various donation centers for Hurricane Michael victims and to the nonprofit organization Children In Crisis. To promote the classics during Homecoming, many schools, including Escambia High School and Arnold High School, represented their Latin Club at their schools’ Homecoming parade. For the month of October, the spirit of the classics was spread as Escambia shared Halloween-related JCL facts throughout each class period. Escambia also participated in a Manna Food Drive for the month of November, collecting approximately 300 items. - Brandon Mitra, Regional Leader (RL1@fjcl.org)

Region two has been busy this past year!! We have participated in the School Supply

Drive, Vesuvius Day, Fall Forum, and so much more!! To elaborate, on Vesuvius Day, many schools (as shown by Maclay) made cakes to demonstrate the eruption and pay respects. Schools also took it upon themselves to personalize events, like Classical Conversations with their Nox Loci featuring karaoke, a toilet paper toga contest, a toga race, and a supply drive for those affected by Hurricane Michael. We are ready to take on the rest of the year with lots of spirit and service! - Iyshwary Warren, Regional Leader (RL2@fjcl.org)

Region three

September, School Supply Drive: Collected school supplies for donations to the Back-2-School Supply Drive at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Florida. October, Coin Wars: Held a mini Coin Wars between Latin teacher and club officers. Donations went to DESC (Downtown Ecumenical Services Council) fundraising efforts in Jacksonville to feed families. November, Sandwich-making Service Project: Held an after school service project to make sandwiches which were donated to Clara White Mission, which is a soup kitchen that feeds the homeless. - Charles Li, Regional Leader (RL3@fjcl.org)

Region four

, over these past few months, has excitedly carried out FJCL service and spirit projects, such as the school supply drive, SAFE (Stuffed Animals for Emergencies), “Spooky Strigiles” of tying classical-themed Halloween facts onto pencils and attaching them to lockers, and the Fall Forum service project, the Kindness Rocks! They have been distributed around Gainesville, so be sure to look out for some! And, don’t forget, very soon is our annual Saturnalia party! Finally, Region 4 Leader Lindsay Jenkins and NJCL Academic Chair Mr. David Jackson traveled to the Alachua County District Office to promote Latin and classical curricula in public schools. Certain schools have offered Latin in the past, but, due to many complications, they can unfortunately no longer provide that option. Lindsay and Mr. Jackson created and gave a presentation to the Executive Director of K-12 Curriculum and Curriculum Specialist for World Languages to kick start Project Trajan, a program developed by FJCL Vice President Taylor Rohleen and Regional Leaders Lindsay Jenkins and Mara Xiong, designed to bring the JCL to new heights through membership. To conclude, it has been a great couple of months in Region IV, and we can’t wait for the rest of the year! - Lindsay Jenkins, Regional Leader (RL5@fjcl.org)

Region Five

has been very busy since the start of the school year! Satellite, Edgewood, and Holy Trinity’s JCLs all participated in the statewide School Supply Drive, collecting supplies for teachers and schools in need. Recently, many of the chapters in our region had a great time attending Fall Forum, including Satellite High School, Edgewood Jr./Sr. High School, and Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy. There, they contributed to the Hygiene for the Homeless service project and painted some rocks for the Kindness Rocks service project! Right before Thanksgiving, Satellite had a club fall party, with music, snacks, and fall-themed crafts, such as making Latin-themed hand turkeys. Moreover, Edgewood Jr./Sr. has been getting out in the community lately, participating in a local craft fair to raise money. - Heather Pickert, Regional Leader (RL5@fjcl.org)

Region Six

August 13th, 2018: All Region 6 Orange County Public Schools resume school after summer break and a great National Convention and, with this, JCL meetings and activities begin. August 8th, 2018: JCL Club Day at Windermere Preparatory School August 9th, 2018: Winter Springs High School JCL reps JCL spirit at football game. August 24th, 2018: Winter Springs High School JCL begins to advertise JCL. September 9th, 2018: Windermere Prep JCL hosts an interest meeting for those interested in joining the JCL. October 1st, 2018: Winter Springs JCL gathers in a trailer to parade around their high school for the Homecoming Parade. October 19th, 2018: Windermere Prep JCL participates in Homecoming parade with a imperial-themed float. November 16th, 2018: All Region 6 JCLs prepare for Fall Forum the next day. November 17th, 2018: Fall Forum! November 26th, 2018: WPS JCL Officers to meet during Student Resource Time to plan out Saturnalia party and WPS JCL social media. December 15th, 2018: Saturnalia December 1st-15th, 2018: All Region 6 JCLers finish off midterms and celebrate Saturnalia together! - Dakota Marosi, Regional Leader (RL6@fjcl.org)

Region SEVEN has been a blast. I’ve managed to connect with two schools, St. Ste-

phen’s Episcopal School and Out of Door Academy, in addition to working to promote JCL within my own school. The VPs of St. Stephen’s and Out of Door Academy have been bursting with ideas on spirit and service, from passing out candy bags during Latin Club to hosting Latin tutoring programs. So far, we’ve hosted a school supply drive collecting binders, pencils, notebooks, and other assortments to benefit the girls at PACE Center for Girls. In October, for Project Trajan, we hosted a Latin Movie Night to promote a love for the Latin language and get more kids to join the JCL. In November, I travelled to Fall Forum and helped decorate Kindness Rocks. I brought a portion of them to my region and will spread them throughout my local community, and Berkeley Preparatory School for Random Acts of Kindness Week. If anyone within Region 7 has any questions or ideas on promoting spirit and service throughout JCL, please feel free to contact me! I cannot wait to see what the rest of the year holds. - Mara Xiong, Regional Leader (RL7@fjcl.org)

LOL. Latin out Loud with LJ

FOREWORD Salvete! Throughout the year, in each new edition of the Uvae Vitis, this short column of “LOL.” will be filled with your favorite Latin jokes, both original and pre-existing.

Below, you can find an edition of “Latin in Real Life: What Non-classicists Think We Do” better known as “LRL, along with “#LatinRelatables.” If you have any classics-themed jokes, puns, or any LRL short stories, please submit them to RL4@fjcl. org to see them in the next edition of the Uvae! Thank you!

LRL: Latin in real Life It all began when two Latin students realized that they were the Baucis to their Philemon, their *Roman history analogy of a happy and loyal couple,* their infinitive to indirect statement, their sine qua non. Nero and Aurelia became the power couple of Latin in real life … but they weren’t about that “accusative of exclamation,” preferring to keep it to themselves for a while. One day, while Nero, Aurelia, and some certamen players were at Outback Grill in New Haven, Connecticut, the night before the Yale Certamen tournament, one of their friends, Cornelia, was curious to see if her matchmaking actually worked. So, mid-dinner, Cornelia aimlessly muttered, “My boot lost a button”—which in reality made no sense, but she just went with it. She looked under the table to find the “button” and saw Nero and Aurelia holding hands! Cornelia was so pleased that her matchmaking had worked, and, that night, they all celebrated! And there we have it, meī amīcī. Check back in the next edition to see another story of “Latin in Real Life!”

Latin Puns • Have you heard about the frog who did the Latin prose competition? The other frogs said of him, “scribit, scribit!” • Instead of the game Whack-a-mole, what did the Romans and Greeks have? Peg-a-sus. • What does a Greek cow say? “µ!” • After Persephone was kidnapped, why did everyone get parking tickets? DeMeter wasn’t working. • Remember the game Cut the Rope? What was the little green monster’s favorite Latin case? Om-Nom-inative. • I, for one, like Roman numerals. • What do you call a musician that looked at Medusa? A rockstar. • Charon is the ferryman of the dead. It’s not a great job, but he Styx with it. • The prefix -aero comes from the Greek word meaning “air.” What are other examples of Greek roots? Trees in Greece. • Iota tell you where this pun is going, but it’s a more fun gamma when I know that you can’t beta me!

#LatinRelatables 1. When you start reading in English class and pronounce your v’s like w’s. 2. When your friends ask you to say something in Latin and you just quote the Aeneid. 3. Trying to explain that Certamen is like “Latin Jeopardy” and that, yes, you do it for fun. 4. Learning how to flirt from Ovid’s “Ars Amatoria.” 5. Quod momento when you start cognitare in duarum lingarum at the same tempus.

Spirit & Service school supplies drive To kick off the school year, each JCL chapter had a School Supplies Drive, collecting various back-to-school items to benefit a variety of recipients. Chapters were able to select where they would donate these supplies based on their location and need in their community. Left: Escambia JCL showcasing their donations. Over 400 supplies were collected!

Right: Region 4 Leader Lindsay Jenkins posing with donated supplies from her chapter, Oak Hall JCL.

By Taylor Rohleen, 2018-2019 FJCL Vice President Kindness Rocks + Hygiene for the homeless For Fall Forum, JCLers donated various hygiene supplies and painted Kindness Rocks. The creativity of JCLers was mind blowing! The rocks were so beautiful and I hope the people who see them get a little happiness from them. Our Regional Leaders placed them in popular locations throughout their regions. For the hygiene supplies, I dropped them off at the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida. It was really rewarding, to see who will benefit from the JCLove.

CLUB OF TH Escambia High School

Escambia has done a ~snazzy~ job spreading the JCLove throughout Region 1, in BOTH spirit and service. Though I can try to explain all the wonderful things Escambia has accomplished, Brandon Mitra, Rhapeepan Antrim, Alena Freyhofer explain it best: Throughout the fall, the Escambia JCL participated in many spirited festivities that truly showed how involved we are as a chapter. We always encourage our new and existing members to show off their Latin spirit by wearing Escambia Latin attire. As seen in one of the attached photos, many of our members often wear their purple “Latina Vivit” headbands to represent the Escambia JCL at school. Our first event of the school year, the Ice Cream Social, provides an opportunity for our members to feel the spirit of the JCL. The “Latin’s Alive” dance (see attached video) is a popular annual tradition. There is a requirement for our members to perform this dance in order to get ice cream. At the end of September, our JCL chapter participated in our school’s Homecoming parade. Our members devoted endless hours to decorating our spirit truck (see attached photo), which received 1st place in the school competition. Our club is always the most spirited in the parade because JCL has given us copious amounts of experience in cheering with stamina and enthusiasm! On Halloween each class read aloud spooky Roman facts, developed by our former FJCL officers and enjoyed eating Smarties (because Latin makes you smart!) Along the journey, we have regularly shared our spirited events on our Instagram.

HE SEASON midtown classical academy

A close runner-up, Midtown Classical Academy has shone so brightly in FJCL. One of the main goals in FJCL this year is to spread the classics to the youth, and I’m thrilled that Midtown Classical has taught Greek to the elementary kids. In the following paragraphs, Katherine Cox explains all of the chapter’s efforts: Midtown Classical has had a full season carrying out the spirit of the JCL in activities, fellowship, service and handing on the torch of classical civilization. It is our job as JCLers to help keep the JCL alive by embodying the JCL morals and spirit, and sharing them with our community; we’ve had a great year so far. Since September, we have connected with our fellow JCLers by attending two certamen tournaments and our first Fall Forum. At our meetings each week, the level two students of Midtown have worked with the new Latin students to encourage them to study and to show them how fun the classics are! They have helped coach the novice certamen team and taught them how to find all the resources for outlines and books that will be needed for their success. The level two students have also started teaching elementary students the Greek alphabet and Greek History and Literature in hopes that they will someday join the JCL too. We even have a kindergartener catching the classics fever. We have also come together to serve in other ways! On September 11, we assembled 220 military care packages as part of the National Day of Service and Remembrance. In October, we harvested vegetables to help provide more than 200 food bags for those in need after Hurricane Michael. Not only has this brought us closer together as a chapter, but has also given us a great opportunity to help others.

florida state university schools

I’m so proud of FSUS’s activities throughout the fall. I truly think they represent FJCL so well. Kudos to Iyshwary Warren for being so awesome and filling out the application. Check out the following to learn what FSUS has done this season: We embodied JCL spirit by continuing to grow our club presence on campus by having such events like our annual ice cream social, toilet paper toga contests, bi-monthly spirit meetings, and involvement in school events like Fall Carnival and joint service projects. It’s been one of our goals this year to increase member involvement through monthly community service projects and showcases of spirit like supporting our athletic teams with signs and cheers at games. We also have made it a priority to actively recruit new members for our chapter to spread the #JCLove at events like Open House and in-class JCL promotion.

Presi 2018-2019 FJCL President Log From the Desk of Matthew Thomas General Duties The President’s role is foremost to chair all the meetings of the FJCL, at States, during Fellowship at Nationals, at Fall Forum, and during the several teleconferences that take place over the year. The President is also responsible for overseeing the general activity of the board, mediating between the other officers, communicating with the CAF VP, and coordinating Fall Forum. From States to Nationals (April-July) To start, my job would be impossible without the guidance of the CAF VP and mentor of the board, Ms. Robison. We lovingly call her Ms. R. On day one, I set up the Google Drive folder we base our operations from and an icebreaker to help everyone get to know each other. I wrote a recap of States for the Spring Edition of the Uvae Vitis, answered officers’ questions where I could, helped edit a couple of our publications, and after some time we began preparing for Nationals. Before each meeting (we prefer to use Google Hangouts), I write an agenda of the business to cover and discuss the details with Ms. R beforehand. My first was between just Taylor, Ms. R, and me, and we discussed choosing and ordering the spirit props we’d use at Nationals. I wrote the 2018-2019 Regional Leader application form, and about a week later we had a full board meeting, the first of two concerning Nationals. During those two meetings I went over pre-Nationals publicity, some logistics for convention, preliminary Fall Forum planning (location, date, theme), and we selected this year’s regional leaders. At Nationals (July 22-28) This year’s convention for me was as rewarding as it was hectic. As a full-time certamen player and part-time test taker, something had to go to accommodate my presidential duties, and it ended up being my sleep. I made a spreadsheet to coordinate thank-you notes for the chaperones and sponsors, I helped lead cheers during spirit, and I was Esha’s second voting delegate, which entailed going to the Nominations Committee Meeting, Constitutional Amendments Meeting, and the Candidates’ Open Forum with her to take notes on the candidates and approve the amendments for voting. The preparation and execution of the nightly state Fellowship meeting, however, occupied the largest chunk of my time. Each night, I met with Ms. R 30-45 minutes before Fellowship to construct agendas for the meetings and discuss announcements, but I would also visit her at lunch, talk to her on walks, and briefly meet with the board after

ident fellowships. At first I relied on agendas Ms. R graciously made for me, but by the end of the week I was able to handle it myself. Chairing these fellowship meetings was the highlight of my duties at Nationals, stressful as it was, and it gave me great experience with speaking, improvisation, and the most useful kinds of preparation (I tried a few strategies). Those meetings were particularly memorable, and the process of gradually becoming more comfortable and confident was extremely gratifying. From Nationals to Fall Planning (August) A couple weeks after Nationals, we had a meeting where we caught up and solidified the general information about Fall Forum. I found writers for the tests and certamen questions, and I wrote a recap of Nationals for the Summer Edition of the Uvae Vitis. I wrote the registration email for Fall Forum, created the registration form for students, and wrote syllabi for all the Fall Forum tests to distribute with the email. Going into Fall Planning, I found a few candidates for the quote that will be the 2019 State theme. From Fall Planning through Fall Forum (September-November) The month of September was relatively laid-back, but come October the board went into full swing. The first thing apparent to me was that I had a lot more responsibility than last year: Like in 2017, I volunteered to take on the production of tests and assembly of certamen (not the role of any one officer), but I also had the general administrative role. We started off with a meeting where we assigned duties to officers in a master checklist. I revised the timing of the schedule to eliminate conflicts from last year—certamen needed to start a little sooner. After great effort, I sent off the tests to Mr. Robie, who alongside Ms. R is the MVP of Fall Forum. I assembled the certamen questions and sorted them into manila envelopes for the moderators, and I set up the brackets and scoresheet online so they could be accessed more easily. I got in touch with Mr. Jackson to be our Certamen Czar, and I was in contact with Ms. R and Mr. Robie about specific matters as they came up. As the date came closer, the board often settled things promptly in our group chat, and there was lots of checking in, by me on the officers but also by the officers on me, which I really appreciated. When the day was finally here, I spoke about my experience at the orientation for new JCLers, led Ships & Sailors during Ludi, and went from event to event in the interim. Fall Forum ended up being awesome, and some time after the event we had one more meeting to talk about what we should keep for next year and what we should change based on a lot of great feedback.

Vice

Pr

Taylor Rohleen’s VP Log, 2018-2019 From the Desk of Taylor Rohleen

General Duties of the Vice President: The Vice President’s role, in essence, is to promote the Classics through various spirit and service activities throughout the year. This includes, but is not limited to, the following: planning spirit at Nationals, establishing service projects throughout the year, collaborating with the Regional Leaders and VPs from other states, judging the spirit competition at State Latin Forum, running Ludi, and overall spreading the JCLove. In addition to the aforementioned roles, the Vice President concurrently communicates with their fellow officers, assisting in any way possible and consistently striving to better the Florida Junior Classical League. If the President is absent at any event, the VP is to assume the role of President, for the time being. April 2018 - July 2018 (Pre-Nationals) Spring Uvae Vitis This process included the following: teaching myself how to use Adobe InDesign; creating a promotional infographic; collecting various articles and images from my fellow officers, along with writing some myself; and uploading the final copy to Issuu, a digital publishing platform. FJCL Spirit Cheer Contest On May 2nd, I released this contest, which entailed local JCLs filming and posting a video of their chapter performing a spirit cheer. In an effort to provide this information in an accessible format, I developed an infographic and posted it to social media. This contest served three purposes: to publicize FJCL (the videos were uploaded online for the world to see), to hype up JCLers post-forum, and to provide us with cheer videos for Nationals. We received multiple submissions, and I’m so pleased with everyone’s post-States spirit!! Spirit Prop Preparation I had a meeting on May 28th with Matthew and Ms. R to discuss the process of selecting and ordering props. Promptly after the meeting, I browsed Oriental Trading and compiled a document of spirit ideas for convention. Along with gathering spirit ideas, I had a voice call meeting with Collin Kane, 2017-2018 NJCL 2nd VP and 2016-2017 FJCL VP, at which we

esident conversed on spirit and service at both state and national levels. I presented my spirit ideas at the June 7th officer meeting and we selected which items we would order. In the following weeks, I put together the spirit prop orders, selecting as many items as possible that would fit in our budget. State T-Shirt I collaborated with Kristina and the board to transfer the winning t-shirt drawing to a digital design. We picked out the shirt color and ordered the shirts thereafter. Spirit Check Video As a fun preview for Nationals, I created a collage video of the officers performing the FJCL Spirit Check. I gathered videos from all the officers, inputted them into a video collage application, and posted it to Instagram. Scrapbook Editing Before Kiki Schmalfuss, former FJCL Historian, submitted the state scrapbook, Afreen Ashraf and I copy-edited it for brevity and clarity. Regional Leader Applications In order to release the application to the public, I created an infographic for it and posted it to social media. Once students applied for the position, I consolidated their applications into one document and took notes on their responses. The officers and I discussed the applicants during our July 7th meeting and we selected the best of the best! Thereafter, I composed acceptance and rejection emails for the applicants. Letter to Delegation FJCL spirit is a blood sport, so, in order to prepare for it, I composed an email for all the delegates who were attending Nationals. This letter included vital information regarding the National Service Project and what to wear during spirit. After drafting the letter and having it copy edited by Ms. R, I emailed Mr. Mize for it to be sent to the entire Florida delegation. Spirit Letters For Nationals, I handmade three sets of spirit letters. The process took 20+ hours, 21 styrofoam boards, and many sleepless nights. The first set was in a cursive font for Tuesday’s State Pride Day. The letters had hand-stippled, metallic blue paint to represent Florida’s oceans! For Wednesday and Friday, I built gold block letters to correspond with the Wednesday’s purple and gold spirit gear and Friday’s Rock n’ Roll JCL attire. While I do love both of those letters, Thursday’s letters are my personal favorite! I decorated each letter as a different farm animal for the spirit day, Cincinnatus Had a Farm.

JCL Webmasters and Secretaries NJCL Countdown In the Facebook JCL Webmasters and Secretaries Group, there is an annual NJCL Countdown for convention. JCLers across the nation share activities to hype up everyone for convention. For mine, I had them comment the beginning of their favorite spirit cheer and tag someone to finish it! State Service Recognition Collin Kane, the 2017-2018 NJCL 2nd VP, released a State Service Recognition Competition for Nationals. Submitting an application for it falls under my duties, so, with the help of Afreen Ashraf and Kiki Schmalfuss, I cataloged all of the service projects we had completed in the last year and hyperlinked social media posts to the document. Maya Harris, Afreen, and I also had a Google Hangouts call to finish the application. National Service Project: Pre-Convention This year, the National Service Project was weaving mats for the homeless, the same service project as the 2018 State Latin Forum. To remind delegates to bring plastic bags, I made and posted an infographic about the project to social media. July 2018 (During Nationals) - August 2018 Nationals: Spirit Prep Cycle The following information is how I conducted Florida spirit at Nationals, beginning with Fellowship: When the time came for officer announcements at Fellowship, I would teach the delegates the spirit cheers and present the props for the following day. Once Fellowship was over, I would inflate the inflatables, sort supplies, and attach meter sticks to the spirit letters—these tasks often kept me up until the wee hours of the morning. After a few hours of sleep, I would finish the work that hadn’t been completed and, once done, we (the officers, friends, Region Leaders, and I) would carry the gear to the Fellowship room and unpack it. Following the arrival of delegates, I formed an assembly line through which they would put on their props. When everyone was settled, we would trek to General Assembly and begin the actual competition, at which I cheered out all of the energy I had. I recuperated once GA began and was slightly more energized by its close. The officers and I cleaned up the mess we made, at both GA and the Fellowship room, after assembly. Then, I would write my agenda for Fellowship, create themed cheers for spirit points, and begin the process all over again. This, needless to say, was exhausting. Thankfully, it did pay off: On Wednesday, we ranked 2nd in spirit; on Thursday, we won 1st; for overall spirit, we placed 3rd!

esident National Service Project: During Convention After collecting hundreds of plastic bags, I brought them to the National Service Project. While at the project, I cut bags, weaved mats, taught other states how to craft them, too! Regional Leaders After formally announcing the 2018-2019 Regional Leaders at Fellowship and on social media, I situated them by creating a Facebook Messenger group chat, adding them to the RL Google Drive folder, and having an online meeting with them. I also cataloged a list of the chapters under each region, so that they will know which chapters to contact! At the meeting, we discussed Project Trajan, which service projects we would like to accomplish, and their submissions to the Uvae Vitis. Summer Edition of the Uvae Vitis With the end of Nationals comes another edition of the Uvae Vitis. So, I began planning by posting a contribution infographic on social media and contacting JCLers individually about submitting content. I also had a Google Hangouts call with Lucy Ku, former GJCL Historian, to further my skills in Adobe InDesign, the platform on which the Uvae is created. Officer Work Day During the first week of August, I met with Charlotte Varnes and we collaborated on the Uvae, the new website, and other various FJCL endeavors. We ended up working at Starbucks for over three hours―that is dedication. Service Plan In order to have a idea of this year’s service projects, I outlined what we are to accomplish and shared the information with my fellow officers and the Regional Leaders. Project Trajan Regional Leaders Lindsey Jenkins and Mara Xiong have spearheaded this fantastic project. To assist them, I constructed a informational packet on Project Trajan. School Supplies Drive The first service project of the school year, the School Supplies Drive, aligns perfectly with the season! I introduced it to the Regional Leaders, began correspondence on collection, and created an infographic that I posted to social media. 08/05/18 Regional Leader Meeting At this meeting, we went over guidelines for being a RL, how to share the info, and what we are planning on doing service-wise in the future.

08/18/18 Executive Board Meeting At this meeting, we started preliminary Fall Forum planning and reconnected on our goals for this year! I mainly discussed service projects and the Uvae. Fall Planning On Friday night, the officers and I did Fall Forum and preliminary States planning, and we finally got to reunite after Nationals. It felt like a million years had passed since July, so we spent all night catching up! The next morning, we attended the Fall Planning Meeting and sorted the details for States. 09/29/18 Regional Leader Meeting At this meeting, the RLs and I wrapped up the School Supplies Drive, planned Spooky Spirit, and brainstormed Fall Forum service. We also troubleshooted any issues the RLs were having, including a lack of correspondence with the schools. Spooky Spirit Halloween is about classics as much as it is candy, so I made a graphic highlighting ways to spread the spirit and posted it to the FJCL social medias! This gave chapters ideas on how to celebrate this spooky holiday with a classical flair. 10/21/18 Executive Board Meeting Attending the Executive Board Meeting, the FJCL officers divvied up the tasks required to run a successful Fall Forum. Fall Forum I formatted the program for Fall Forum (notice the similar font!), planned the First-Time JCLer Workshop, outlining key parts of JCL to share, and purchased decorations for the event. While at Fall Forum, I ran the service project, decorated the venue, put up the photo wall, passed out meals, and dealt with any tasks at hand. Kindness Rocks This was the service project for Fall Forum. Stanton did this last year, and I was inspired to do this on a statewide level. So, with the help of Kristina Liao, FJCL Treasurer and Stanton scholar, the supplies were organized and ordered! We ordered a LOT of rocks that were painted and distributed throughout Florida.

esident I created a graphic to post to social medias and advertised the service project prior to Fall Forum. After the event, I drove to the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida and dropped off the supplies. It was so eye-opening to see the shelter in real life and it truly made me appreciate the giving back that FJCL does. 11/25/18 Regional Leader Meeting At this meeting, we planned how the RLs would be distributing the Kindness Rocks. Then, we discussed COTS, Saturnalia, and the Regionals service project. Regional Saturnalia The holidays are all about celebrating and conviviality, and what better way to celebrate than with the Latin fam! Seeing JCLers from other schools rarely happens, so a few of the regions (2, 4, 7) planned region-wide Saturnalias. I broadcasted this information to Florida by making an infographic and posting it. Fall Club of the Season (COTS) I wrote the application for COTS, created an infographic, and posted it. Once the applications were submitted, I judged them and posted the results to the Uvae Vitis. Fall Uvae Vitis In this version, I streamlined my approach; but, as usual, I organized submissions, edited them, and formatted them into Adobe InDesign.

Pa r l i a m e 2018-19 FJCL Parliamentarian Log From the Desk of Esha Patel General Duties My role as Parliamentarian is to uphold Robert’s Rules of Order during meetings, and not only to maintain but also to improve the FJCL Constitution, better matching FJCL policies. As an officer, I must keep in touch with the rest of the board throughout the year in order to plan events and improve the organization. From States to Nats Right after my inauguration at States, I carefully updated the Constitution to match passed amendments. Later in the summer, I reviewed Regional Leader applications before meeting with the officers in order to be informed about each potential RL. Thereafter, I met with the other officers over Google Hangouts to help Taylor plan the spirit props and cheers for Nationals, and we chose the 2018-19 Regional Leaders and the Nationals t-shirt color scheme. Additionally, Charlotte and I drafted a parody of “Party in the USA” to perform for the Florida Roll Call at Nationals. I helped Collin Kane, the 2017-18 National 2nd VP, organize the service project for Nationals, due to my experience with it in the past and at State Convention. Nationals in Miami (Ohio, not Florida) Having arrived at Nationals, I attended many voting meetings, which included Nominations Committee, Candidates’ Open Forum, Constitutional Amendments Meeting, and Meet the Candidates. At Nominations Committee, Matthew and I had to vote for two candidates to be approved to run for office, which was a very important task, since there were so many prefiled candidates wanting to run this year. The Constitutional Amendments Meeting also proved to be crucial this year due to the extensive number of meticulous amendment proposals. At Meet

e n ta r i a n the Candidates, I made sure to speak with every candidate in order to be well informed on everyone’s campaign platforms, and at Candidates’ Open Forum, it was my responsibility to make sure that at least ten percent of our delegation was present in order to maintain our two votes, which we easily accomplished. Aside from my specific duties as Parliamentarian, I also met with the other officers 30 minutes before Fellowship each day to review the agenda and any announcement for the meeting. We also worked very hard to carry spirit supplies to the right location, from the buses to dorms all the way to Fellowship, so that they were able to be distributed punctually during spirit prep. Having aided Collin in setting up the national service project, I also attended every service session, helping cut plastic bags and weave them to form mats, while also teaching everyone, including the national officers themselves, the methodology of mat weaving. The week’s elections culminated in the Voting Fellowship on Thursday afternoon, where I facilitated discussion about each of the candidates. Once everyone who wished to state their opinion did so, I closed the floor for discussion and held a vote to determine which candidate the FJCL would cast their votes for. Additionally, I conducted discussion on the proposed amendments, which were particularly lengthy this year, so that everyone could fully understand the implications of each potential change to the constitution. Once again, I held a vote to decide if the FJCL would pass these amendments. Post-Nats to Fall Planning After suffering extensive PCD (Post Convention Depression), I wrote an article in the Summer Uvae about local elections and updated this officer log to include any and all things FJCL-related that I have contributed to as an officer. Currently, I am working on examining the National Constitution to look for potential amendments to submit to the National Parliamentarian.

Pa r l i Fall Planning and Fall Forum In September, all of the officers, as well as the CAF Board and the State Forum Planning Committee, met for Fall Planning at the Wyndham Hotel in Orlando, where State Forum is held annually. Arriving on Friday afternoon, the officers spent the day fine-tuning any and all activities that would take place at Fall Forum in November, from specific Ludi events and prizes to testing format to lunch and the service project. We also began some early planning for State Forum in April, such as deciding a location for Spring Planning and carefully updating the program to accomodate any changes in the schedule from the previous year. Running on almost no sleep after staying up late to hang out with my fabulous officers, the FJCL Board and CAF Board joined in a larger meeting on Saturday morning. Here, we discussed many details involving Fall and State Forum to make sure that both boards were on the same page. Although there were no specific Parliamentarian-related duties during Fall Planning and Fall Forum, I definitely remained busy helping the rest of the board plan for the event. During forum, I had many different responsibilities, including helping to run certain Ludi events, distributing lunch, and seeking out adult volunteers for Ludi. Throughout the day, as the offices faced various obstacles, I made sure to aid in solving all of these issues (of which there were MANY, but we worked together to solve them). I also joined the other officers in speaking at the First-time JCLer Workshop, as I explained running and campaigning for office and encouraged them to consider JCL leadership in a very Parli-like fashion. Overall, Fall Forum was a huge success in every way, from testing to Ludi to service.

Rec-sec 2018-2019 Recording Secretary Officer Log From the Desk of Afreen Ashraf Duties of Recording Secretary:

As stated in the FJCL Constitution: “It will be the duties of the Recording Secretary to record and keep a permanent record of the minutes of the fall planning meeting, the business meeting and the general assemblies of the State Latin Forum and all other officers' meetings and to submit a copy of the minutes to the Vice President of the Classical Association of Florida within four weeks of each meeting”. Additionally, I will promote the extended communication of the minutes to FJCLers via the U vae Vitis and collaborate with the other officers to ensure productivity and efficiency at meetings. The minutes will be a testament to board meeting efficacy. Furthermore, I will work with the other officers to promote a constant advancement of the FJCL and affiliated events and to accomplish necessary items.

CorrE sponding Secretary 2018-2019 Corresponding Secretary Officer Log Devin Rankin General Duties of the Corresponding Secretary: The Corresponding Secretary is an appointed position chosen by the State Registrar, who at this time is Kristen Youngblood of Maclay School in Tallahassee, Florida. Based on the FJCL Constitution, the Corresponding Secretary is “to conduct the correspondence of this organization.” Basically, this means aiding the Registrar in registration before the State Convention and assisting the Registrar in their duties at the State Convention, which includes―but is not limited to―aiding in the registration process before State Convention; organizing, putting together, and handing out registration packets; scanning tests; determining the winners of different competitions based on scores; and organizing, putting together, and handing out the packets that include tests and other contests, at the end of convention.

Co-Sec Appointment (April 21) - Nationals (July 22) On June 7th, the Board had a meeting to discuss Fall Forum, Regional Leader applications, and National Convention. Specifically for National Convention, we decided on spirit props for each of the themed days. Between the two Executive Board meetings, I reviewed the Regional Leader applications that were submitted, in order make an informed decision when the Executive Board voted on Regional Leaders. On July 8th, the Executive Board had a meeting to discuss Regional Leaders, National Convention, and Fall Forum. The main goal of this meeting was to vote on a Regional Leader for each region. Nationals (July 23-28) As Corresponding Secretary, there is not much that my duties call for me to do at National Convention; however, as an officer I helped out my fellow board in any way possible: I collected the plastic bags at Fellowship and stored them in my room, and I helped transport and pass out materials for spirit. Fall Planning (Sept.) to Fall Forum (Nov. 17) The Executive Board met again in person, for the first time after Nationals, at Fall Planning, which takes place at the same place as State Convention. On the first night, the Board discussed plans for both State Forum and Fall Forum, such as our duties during the events, the schedule, and also the location and time for State Planning. On the second day of Fall Planning, the Executive Board joined forces with the CAF to work through any changes to the State Forum’s schedule. A short couple of months later, I attended Fall Forum, where I helped with registration, handed out t-shirts, set up for lunch, and ran various Ludi events. I had an awesome time at Forum and it was great to see all the friends I made at Nationals again.

Treasurer 2018 - 2019 Treasurer Log General Duties of the Treasurer The Treasurer is appointed by the Financial Director of the Classical Association of Florida, Janice Lee of Stanton College Preparatory School in Jacksonville, Florida. As stated in the Constitution, the duties of the Treasurer are to “receive and disburse funds and to keep a record of all financial transactions, which I fulfill in collaboration with the Financial Director. In addition, I assist my fellow officers and work collaboratively with them to complete any other necessary tasks. April 23 - 25 At the 2018 State Convention, I had recorded the names and information of students who placed in an academic or creative contest but were only able to receive a blank trophy. I assisted the Financial Director in ordering the appropriate trophy plates that these students would be able to place on the blank trophies they were given, as well as organizing the plates to be mailed to the appropriate schools. April 21 - July 22 Between State Forum and Nationals, I attended online meetings with fellow officers to discuss Regional Leaders, planning for Nationals, and Fall Forum. I also helped in designing our state t-shirt that we were to wear for State Pride Day at Nationals. July 23 - 28 (Nationals) At Nationals, there are not any duties specific to the Treasurer that need to be fulfilled. I assisted fellow officers whenever needed, and attended officer meetings to discuss and plan for our nightly fellowships. September 8 (Fall Planning) - November 17 (Fall Forum) I attended Fall Planning at the Wyndham Orlando Resort with the rest of the FJCL Board and the State Forum Planning Committee, where we discussed State Forum and planned for Fall Forum. Over the next several weeks leading up to Fall Forum, I attended online meetings with my fellow officers and Ms. Robison. I was responsible for creating the budget for Fall Forum and deciding how much money would go towards each aspect of Fall Forum (food, Ludi, service project, etc.). Additionally, I designed the Fall Forum t-shirt and worked with a local t-shirt printer to get the shirts printed.

t e c h . co o 2018-2019 Technology Coordinator Officer Log Charlotte Varnes General Duties of Technology Coordinator: The Technology Coordinator is the officer appointed by the CAF member who oversees the website. My role is to help maintain the website, including updating chapter information, putting in officer information, and making any other necessary changes. As well as website duties, I meet with the other officers and help make decisions regarding FJCL events. Between State and Nationals: After being appointed Technology Coordinator, my first job was to put in the new officers’ pictures and new information on the website. After doing this, my next job was meeting with the officers to discuss Nationals information regarding Spirit and the t-shirt. During the meeting, it was decided that Esha and I would perform Roll Call at Nationals, so we began drafting Roll Call, set to “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus. I also began looking at other JCLs’ websites and making note of changes I wanted to add to the FJCL’s site, based on the content and design of their websites. I created a Weebly account, separate from the FJCL, to begin messing around with Weebly’s features and built the base of an entirely separate website to show Mr. Mize the changes I wanted to make to fjcl.org. Additionally, a few weeks before Nationals, I met with the other officers over Google Hangouts to help pick Regional Leaders and discuss last minute Nationals details. Nationals: At Nationals, each day I would meet with the other officers before, and sometimes after, Fellowship to discuss agendas and work that needed to be done. I also assisted with spirit by helping carry props to the Fellowship area and leading cheers. This was probably my favorite part of Nationals: There’s truly no JCL experience that can top the fun of helping to cheer your state to victory. We also helped clean up the Fellowship area following spirit, which was absolutely exhausting, but getting to do it with the other officers certainly made it better. Esha and I also performed the Roll Call, which was nerve wracking beforehand, but ultimately a super fun experience. Plus, we got second, which was pretty cool. I also set aside time to meet with Mr. Mize and discuss the changes I wanted to make on the website, which went very well.

o r d i n ato r Post-Nationals: Following Nationals, I immediately began making changes to the website with the go-ahead from Mr. Mize. Ever since Nationals, I have been spending time adding new pictures to the website, changing backgrounds, creating new pages, and making sure the overall design looks alright. As these changes were made, I sent links to the other officers and Ms. Robison, who gave me feedback and further ideas on what to add to the site. Additionally, in the first week of August, I met up with Taylor to discuss ideas about the website and the Uvae, and we ultimately ended up spending over three hours together working on different tasks. Most recently, I talked to Mr. Mize about updating chapter information on the website, which I will work on as schools send in their registration numbers throughout the beginning of the school year. Fall Planning: During the first weekend of September, all of the officers and CAF attended Fall Planning meetings at the Wyndham in Orlando. During this time, the officers and I went through the entire state packet to change information, decided on a state quote, and assigned duties for Fall Forum. As well as that, I also added the Minutes to the website during this time, created a Fall Forum page with the registration link on it, and tried to fix spacing of the chapter names and sponsors on the FJCL website (it’s impossible for it to line up right). Post Fall Planning and Fall Forum: The officers and I had another meeting via Google Hangouts prior to Fall Forum to go over our duties and details about test writing, the program, and our First Time JCLer Workshop. We also decided whom was buying what, and I ordered ribbons, water balloons, chalk, and trophies in the week before Fall Forum. During this time, I also updated Photo of the Month information on the website and put in the Club of the Season link. At Fall Forum, I ran the slides and performed the duty of Ludi Coordinator with the help of all of the other officers. All eight of us also ran the First Time JCLer workshop, and I really loved getting to introduce the JCL to so many underclassmen. Post Fall Forum: Since Fall Forum, I have made a few small changes to the website, including changing the date on the Club of the Season link and deleting the registration link off of the Fall Forum page.
