What’s the best part of fora?

When you can just hang out and act completely ridiculous at the end of the day with your fiercest competitors turned best friends! Favorite food?

President

Sushi!

Is cereal soup? No, and in no world is it ok to ask this question. I’ll never look at cereal the same way again... Favorite mythological/historical figure? Daphne. When I started taking Latin, I couldn't remember anything in myth except the story of Apollo and Daphne. I still have no idea why, but since then, Daphne has always held a special place in my heart. Favorite Favorite Latin Latin quote? quote?

“Nullum magnum mixtura dementiae fuit.” - There has not been any great "Non desistas, noningenium exieris." -sine Never give up, never surrender. talent without an element of madness.

Vice President

Level of Latin: VI Years in the JCL: 6

What’s the best part of fora? The people! The JCL gives you the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people, whether that is through certamen, ludi, or even at your bazaar booth!

Favorite food?

Mac and cheese. In fact, I love it so much that I have a ranking on my phone of every place i've ever had it. I'm like Guy Fieri.

Is cereal soup? That is forbidden knowledge that we mere humans are not allowed to possess. Favorite mythological/historical figure? Gaius Appuleius Diocles. Not only is he the highest paid athlete of all time, but he also owned a ducenarius, which is also really cool. Chariot racing for the win! Level of Latin: IV Years in the JCL: 5

Favorite Latin quote? "Non desistas, non exieris." - Never give up, never surrender.

Parli

R obert Muniz

What’s the best part of fora? Certāmen for sure. Favorite food?

Pizza

Is cereal soup? Absolutely not. I can't believe this is even a question. Favorite mythological/historical figure? Flavius Areobindus Dagalaiphus Areobindus. A towering figure of late antiquity, Dagalaiphus left an indelible mark on the European sphere following his consulship of A.D. 506. Favorite Latin quote? "Nescio." - I do not know. (Chrysalus, from Plautus' Bacchides)

Dakota Marosi

Secretary

Level of Latin: V Years in the JCL: 5

What’s the best part of fora? For me, it's a tie between elections and meeting new friends. I love both running in and spectating elections, but I also love meeting fellow JCLers.

Favorite food?

Pancakes! Nothing better than an excuse to eat large amounts of syrup and butter.

Is cereal soup? Google defines soup as a liquid dish so... yeah? I guess so? Favorite mythological/historical figure? Cincinnatus, mostly because his name is spectacular but also because I have mad respect for the fact that he gave up the power of dictatorship once he had settled Rome's conflict to then return to his life as a farmer. Level of Latin: IB Latin Year 1 Years in the JCL: 5

Favorite Latin quote? "Quid infantes sumus?" - What are we, babies?

Katie Kemp

What’s the best part of fora?

Historian

Everyone says this, but it's so true! Meeting new people and bonding over the competitive spirit of the JCL is by far the best part. Favorite food?

Chocolate chip cookies

Is cereal soup? Nope, but this question makes me super uncomfortable. Favorite mythological/historical figure? This might be an unpopular opinion, but my favorite is Narcissus. He swerved echo so hard and had so much self love, which makes him an icon. Favorite Latin quote? "Audaces fortuna iuvat." - Fortune favors the bold.

Panita Ruangkanit

Treasurer

Level of Latin: V Years in the JCL: 6

What’s the best part of fora?

Staying up all night with your friends, studying and talking. Then, passing out immediately as you get home. Favorite food?

I love soup noodles!

Is cereal soup? No, it's a beverage. It's kinda like boba but instead of milk tea there's milk and instead of tapioca pearls there's cereal. Favorite mythological/historical figure? Tiresias. He's just some blind, old prophet just living his life but getting into weird situations. Also, his story is hilarious to me. Level of Latin: VI Years in the JCL: 4

Favorite Latin quote? "Ad meliora" - To better things

Isabella Weiner

What’s the best part of fora?

Tech Co.

Wandering the halls and meeting people, late nights in the hotel and at the dance, and getting more and more hyped as you get less and less sleep. Favorite food?

Lamb, I'm big on Irish food. And chocolate, of course.

Is cereal soup? Yes. Favorite mythological/historical figure? Mucius Scaevola, a tad bit overdramatic, but he's got guts and was willing to lend a hand (haha) to Rome in need. Favorite Latin quote? "Ad astra per aspera." - To the stars through difficulties.

Drew Daunt

Level of Latin: AP Years in the JCL: 4

Co-Sec. What’s the best part of fora?

My favorite part is meeting JCLers from other places. Favorite food?

My favorite food is steak.

Is cereal soup? Soup is 100% not a cereal. Favorite mythological/historical figure? Neptune Favorite Latin quote? "Audentes fortuna iuvat." - Fortune favors the bold. Level of Latin: AP Years in the JCL: 4

Virtual Convention Recap Despite the world being turned upside down by COVID-19, students from around the state eagerly took part in the first ever FJCL Virtual State Forum! Although we were physically separated, every spirited Tik Tok and intense digital certamen round brought us together as much as ever. After two weeks of open submissions to spirit, service, and creative activities, FJCLers participated in a host of events on Saturday, April 25th. Students viewed each others' creative projects in a virtual gallery between sessions of online testing open all day. In addition to independent participation, teams of certamen players took part in a full-length tournament played through a Discord server, drawing more than 170 people over the course of the day. After a packed day, JCLers could unwind by watching the virtual "That's Entertainment" showcase, complete with skits by everyone's favorite SCLers. As Digital Forum came to a close, the 2020-21 FJCL Officer Election process, facilitated by the incomparable Annie Class, began. With the Candidates' Hub posted, candidates spent two weeks sharing their platforms, qualifications, and love for the JCL through social media. On May 9th, the new board was announced! To all who participated, thank you for contributing to the continued sense of community in the FJCL regardless of the circumstances. To the JCLers, SCLers, sponsors, and other volunteers who helped plan this unconventional forum, thank you for stepping up to the challenge and putting together such a memorable online experience. I cannot wait to see you all next year for our best state forum yet! Ex animo, Anya AitSahlia 2020-21 FJCL President

Salvete omnes! Quarantine can be a little lonely, especially if you are missing National Convention and JCL friends that you cannot see. So here is a first of (hopefully) many recipes to guide you through these trying times. This recipe is called “JCLove Chocolate Chip Cookies”. One year at camp, a counselor talked to campers about “chocolate chip cookie friends”. These are friends that make you feel all warm and happy inside, like a chocolate chip cookie. Friends that make you feel nice and joke around. Friends that make you feel the JCLove. There are plenty of these friends in the JCL for you, you just might not know it yet. Or you do, and you miss them. I hope that if you make this recipe, you think back on your favorite JCL memory or a chocolate chip cookie friend. Then, go eat some cookies. You deserve it.

- Lilly Telfer, Leon High School

JCLove Chocolate Chip Cookies! Ingredients: - 2 sticks butter (1 cup) - 1/2 cup granulated sugar - 1 cup packed brown sugar - 1/2 tsp baking soda

- 2 eggs - 1 tsp vanilla extract - 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour - chocolate chips

Procedure: 1) Preheat oven to 375 2) Beat butter & sugar in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed until creamy. Add in brown sugar and baking soda. Beat until combined. Add eggs and vanilla. Beat until combined 3) Add flour in a half cup at a time. Once all flour is mixed in, add as many chocolate chips as your heart desires. 4) Scoop ~2 tsp worth of dough and roll into a ball. Place dough balls on an ungreased cookie sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake for around 10 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.

summer Plans In Motion Looking for ways to stay connected with the JCL this summer before Nationals? Join the FJCL Officers for the first ever set of FJCL Summer Activities!

These activities are designed to be fun for everyone, whether you're a Roman history buff, a budding artist, or a major ludi enthusiast! In addition to your interests within the JCL and Classics, the activities also incorporate common interests and hobbies we take part in in our daily lives to create a blend of ancient and modern fun for JCLers everywhere. As a result, we've had everything from Classics-themed charades to cook/bake-offs in which JCLers could submit delicious creations they thought their favorite mythological/historical figures would love! So far, the activities have drawn participants from all parts of Florida in addition to JCLers from other states who wanted ways to stay connected to each other this summer.

As we come into the final week before Nationals, your officers highly encourage that you check out the complete schedule of activities available on the FJCL Instagram (@officialfjcl) and participate as much as you can! Stay tuned for updates from the officers on the day of activities for more in depth explanations about how to participate in each one!

For more information about each activity, visit bit.ly/fjclsummer!

fjcl literary magazine At an FJCL Officer meeting in June, we posed the question to ourselves, "What do we want the Uvae Vitis to be? A literary magazine, or an informative newsletter?" Finding that we couldn’t make a definitive decision, we decided that the FJCL would have both!

This means that the Uvae Vitis will now serve as the FJCL’s

newsletter. It will be shorter, to the point, and keep you up to

date on upcoming events and other JCL news. The Uvae will

primarily be the officer’s outlet to share information, whereas our new literary magazine will serve to be the FJCLer’s publication!

Though we don’t have an official name yet, we do know it will be a type of storybook. You, the FJCL, will be able to submit anything you like. It can be memes, poems, short stories,

paintings, sculptures, even videos of you dancing or singing! Your officers are excited to work on this new publication and even more excited to see submissions!
