T

he company began in 1954 under the leadership of Cornelius Walinga and John Medemblik, who started by crafting wooden truck bodies for local businesses. Over the years the company embraced new technology until they were creating some of the industry's most innovative products. Today, Walinga leads the North American transportation-manufacturing industry in the production of portable pneumatic conveying systems for dry bulk materials, specifically grain and feed seed.

Walinga manufactures the 6", 7" and 8" diesel powered Ultra-Vacs. Ranging from 3,000 to 7,000 bu/hr, the UltraVac comes with many options to choose from. Bumper hitch and 5th wheel style hitches combined with highway towing packages make it a very versatile piece of equipment.

Walinga’s 3510 Agri-Vac is a nicely compact 30hp gas powered grain-vac. It can move product up to 800 bu/hr making it perfect for small cleanup jobs around the farm or mill. Integrated fork pockets make it easy to lift into the back of a pickup truck for transport.

As a family owned and operated company to this day, Walinga remains dedicated to customer service and quality. That has helped them stand out in an increasingly crowded field. Today's farmers know they can trust the pneumatic conveying systems produced by Walinga, so they turn to them time and time again when they need these products. In addition to the company's lengthy history, Walinga's production capabilities help their products stand out. Because they have comprehensive engineering capabilities, they are able to offer sizes, features, options and capacities that are tailor made to the job the system is designed to handle. No matter how large or small a farming operation may be, Walinga can provide a pneumatic conveying system to match perfectly. Available models range from 500 bu/hr to 7000 bu/ hr, and each system can be expanded as needed. The pneumatic conveying systems, grain air systems, grain cleaners and grain vacs, including diesel powered grain vacs, allow operations to move bulk solids safer and easier. They contain no augers, screw conveyors or elevator legs, and they require minimal maintenance because all working components are in one central location. Putting Uncle Sam’s Surplus to Use on the Farm On the Seven Stars Coffee farm in Holualoa, HI, Henry Williams (pictured above standing by some of his cargo trailers) uses irrigation pumps, mowers and a five-ton tractor truck, all deemed surplus by the military, to keep operations on his eight-acre Kona coffee establishment running smoothly. Back on the mainland, in Warrenton, VA, Phillip Ramsey mounts bee colonies on the flatbeds of over 30 M105 military trailers, allowing him to smoothly transport the bees into fields conducive for honey making, which is the flagship of Ramsey’s Stoneleigh Farms. Across the country at eastern Idaho’s Howell Farms, Tom Howell leverages wrecker and cargo trucks, as well as an aircraft recovery truck to farm seed potatoes and barley for beer giants including Anheuser Busch and Corona. And in Blairstown, MO the Gudenkauf family uses a five-ton flatbed, a 6 x6 cargo truck, three-quarter ton trailers and a multi-purpose fourwheeled drive Unimog vehicle to keep costs down and productivity up on their soy bean farm. The Unimog easily plows through rough terrain or snow with bales of hay to feed the cows, while the five-ton flatbed can hold over 10,000 pounds of seed. Though they are farming thousands of miles apart and their crops and products couldn’t be more different, all these folks share a commonality: the use of military surplus on each of their farms. They are not alone either; all across the country farmers are saving money by purchasing retired military vehicles and equipment—no longer needed by the Defense Department, but far from unusable in the private sector—to run their farms. “The military stuff holds up,” says Williams of Seven Stars Coffee Farm. “I’ve been able to buy pumps, mowers and other good quality military equipment that was hardly used. I paid $100 for two water pumps that probably would have cost me $1,200 or $1,400 each if purchased new.” Stoneleigh Farms’ Ramsey agrees: he paid less than $4,000 for the majority of his 6 x6 trucks, which he runs on vegetable oil collected from area restaurants. Such surplus has saved him well over several hundred, if not thousands of dollars, he said. Typically, prices for used military equipment are about a quarter of the cost of new equipment and while some tinkering or TLC might be needed to get the used item up and running, the end result is a hardy, military-grade and DoD approved vehicle or other piece of machinery that is rugged and reliable. “This equipment was built to withstand anything: harsh conditions, heavy use and extreme circumstances. It was crafted and created A2

specifically for our military so you can assume that the quality is impeccable,” says Tom Burton, President of Liquidity Services’ Capital Assets Group which includes the Government Liquidation marketplace, the exclusive sales channel for Defense Department surplus and scrap assets. “Imagine a vehicle that has withstood the rigors of combat and then think about how well that same vehicle will fare on the farm. You can run that vehicle into the ground and it will still keep running.” Burton says that the vast majority of retired military vehicles and much of the other military equipment in use by the private sector was most likely at one time purchased from the Government Liquidation website because the company holds the exclusive contract with the DoD to publically auction items deemed surplus or scrap. Through the contract, tens of thousands of military-use items are made available for public purchase each week and those items are continuously bought, used and then resold from one person to another (or one farmer to another). A simple online search for “military surplus” brings up a bevy of buying options; better yet, type in “military vehicles for sale” and see what pops up. “We found that the Army trucks are useful for around the farm, they’re cheap, they’re diesels and they use silicone brake fluid. They’ve been maintained constantly,” says Larry Gudenkauf whose best deal includes scoring a $78,000 truck for a $1700 price tag.

So, what should the average farmer know about sourcing military surplus? No matter where you are purchasing it from (direct from the DoD or from a neighboring farmer), there are a few things to consider.

Know the condition of the equipment Because the item is typically sold “as is” with no refunds, it’s important to purchase from a credible source. This might include a reputable military surplus company or someone that you know and trust. In some cases the seller might schedule a preview period for potential buyers to come out and look at the item. If an in-person preview is not offered or not possible and the item is listed for sale online, plan to validate the equipment based on the written description, images and video provided. Online preview can easily take the place of an in-person inspection; just make sure you are purchasing from someone credible (any credible online seller will provide this type of marketing as well as transparency when it comes to the sales terms and conditions).

Think about what you actually need It’s easy to get carried away when purchasing retired military equipment, given the amount of it

Putting Uncle Sam's Surplus to Use on the Farm available and the price point of most of it; and there has been more than one farmer admit to being “addicted to surplus.” Though most farmers have the capacity to house an extra tractor trailer (or two), a good piece of advice is to only buy something you can put to use right away. Safe to say, there is plenty of military surplus available for purchase at any given time; as a result you should only purchase something you need. Given the amount of Defense Department inventory hitting the market each week, you certainly don’t need to buy something out of fear it won’t be available, only to store it for six months to a year.

Ways to purchase the equipment The most common channels nowadays for sourcing military surplus are through online auctions and private sales. The benefit of purchasing via an online auction is that you know exactly what your competition is bidding and can make a choice whether to pay more or pull out; essentially, you’ll never pay more than you want. On the Government Liquidation website for example, bids for most all items start at $25.

The Unimog being put to work on the Gudenkauf farm.

Private sales involve direct negotiation between the buyer and seller. The benefit of a private negotiation is that, pending you come to an agreement with the seller, you can get the item immediately (versus having to wait for an online auction to open and close).

What’s normally available? A simple Internet search will show you that hundreds of product categories in the military surplus space are available at any given time. Anything with wheels or that floats (aka vehicles and boats) tend to be the most popular category. For farming, some applicable equipment would include: two and a half and five-ton cargo trucks, cargo trailers, forklift trucks, dump trucks, tractors, wrecker trucks, all-terrain vehicles and even cranes. That said if you’re in the market for exercise equipment, kitchen appliances or field gear like goggles, canteens or all-weather boots, you can easily find that too. “We’ve been replacing a lot of our old civilian trucks with government trucks; we’ve been buying the 800-900 series trucks with 250 Cummins diesel engines in them and we’re very happy with those,” says Howell of the vehicles he’s put to use at Howell Farms. “Usually they have less than 20,000 miles on them and we can have those trucks up and ready to work for less than $12,000.”

Phillip Ramsey’s honey bee colonies in his M105 flatbed trailer.

Back on the Gudenkauf family farm, 16-year-old Andrew says most the kids at school know about his family’s Unimog and think it’s neat. The teenager, who can operate all the vehicles on the farm, has been instrumental in seeking out much of the fleet: “I had always wanted an M35 military vehicle, so we finally got one,” he says. “And now I really want an M35A3 that has the Caterpillar motor and automatic power steering.”

Hunting Vehicles: ATVs Versus UTVs

Are you thinking of buying a hunting vehicle this season? If so, Daniel Harris, a technical manager with Club Car and avid hunter, tells you how to avoid buyer’s remorse.

Buying a Hunting Vehicle? Avoid These 5 Mistakes. 1. Don’t buy on impulse. Most people use their vehicles for much more than hunting. “Knowing all the ways you’ll use your vehicle up front will help you get more miles for your dollar,” says Harris. Then determine where you’ll be hunting. If you plan to park on the road side and walk to the hunting site, a pickup or Jeep may be right for you. “But if you want to drive into the woods, consider an ATV or UTV,” Harris says.

2. ATVs Versus UTVs for Hunting

4. Don’t make the wrong choice between a two- or four-wheel drive.

senses the ground it’s on and does the rest. With traditional systems, you’ll have to push the right levers, select the right gears and worry about locks.”

5. Don’t forget about ground

If you mainly travel trails, a two-wheel drive vehicle may be all you need.

clearance and axle articulation.

If you’ll be crossing creeks; driving in snow, rain or mud; climbing hills; or covering rocky terrain, you’ll want a four-wheel drive.

“Axle articulation is the ability to travel uneven terrain while maintaining ground contact on all four tires and preserving traction and torque. After you consider these factors, as well as bed size, payload and warranty, I suggest you go one step above what you think you’ll need, so you can keep your hunting options open,” Harris says.

Harris notes that there are differences in the performance of four-wheel drive systems, and is a proponent of the IntelliTrak™ all-wheel drive system. "You can select ‘forward’ or ‘reverse’, and IntelliTrak

Purposes. If you’re looking for fast and nimble, an ATV is the best fit. Since they are lightweight, they are easy to trailer and hide. “But ATVs accommodate only one rider and don’t have cargo beds or cabs,” Harris says. UTVs offer other benefits. A cross between a pickup and an ATV, these vehicles are great for hunting, work and neighborhood transportation. “UTVs drive like automobiles and have cargo beds, but they are smaller than pickup trucks and can navigate narrow paths and weave in and out of trees,” says Harris. UTVs are also easy to trailer and hide. Many come with seat belts and ROPS. They’re available in a range of models; the smaller ones can even fit in the back of a pickup truck.

3. Don’t dismiss the “green” option. Hunters often think they need to buy a gas- or dieselpowered vehicle to get a longer range. “But electric vehicles will also give you the range for a good day in the woods,” Harris says. “And they don’t create fumes and noises that frighten animals.” Whether you buy gasoline, diesel or electric, check the range.

Club Car's XRT 1550SE 4x4s deliver unparalleled axle articulation and eight inches of ground clearance, even when fully loaded. Its four-link semi-independent rear suspension provides independent performance with solid axle strength. The world standard for Jeeps and Land Rovers, the system is unique to Club Car in the U.S. UTV market. Club Car products are sold through Authorized Club Car Dealers. Life is a highway and it sure feels like we’re speeding down Interstate 2013 these days, pulling over only to fuel up, rest a bit, make any necessary repairs and head back out again. Seems like the exits marked “Projects to Finish” and “Unexpected Issues” are plentiful, but the signs for exits named “Reconnect with Friends” and “Take a Vacation” are few and far between. Not to complain, though. We’ve had a great first year here at Hedgewood, having completed new building projects in three states and helped lots of farmers improve their existing livestock facilities, sometimes in ways they didn’t know were possible. It’s a road we’re happy to be on and, as we merge onto Interstate 2014,

we look forward with excitement to the opportunities and challenges awaiting us down the road. Most likely, you’re also mapping out plans for 2014 – either on paper or in your head – and starting to put into motion all those projects you planned to do “next year.” As you’re thinking about ways to update barns, beautify your property or, if a new facility is in your future, we hope you’ll consider calling upon Hedgewood to help you navigate. Remember, if you have a question you’d like Hedgewood to take a swing at, please drop a line to the editor of this fine publication and we’ll do our best to answer it for you.

Enviropac Announces New Seed Treater Design Enviropac, Inc., has announced the addition of a new model of their Dry Seed Treater to their line of seed treaters. The new treater, an Auger Mount model, is more convenient and easier to use. The improved loading height on the new seed treater makes it a favorite among agricultural operations. Properly treating seeds in a farming operation is crucial to maximizing yield and minimizing problems from pests and fungus. Yet ensuring that seeds are properly treated can be a challenge. Too much of certain treatments can damage the seed, while too little is ineffective. Seed treaters, like the new one released by Enviropac, Inc., help solve this problem. These treaters mix seed directly on the planter. The new Auger Mount solves makes using the seed treater even easier than it was in the past. Because of the way the auger inclines and rotates, it can provide any seed treater location on the seed tender. The unique design on the new model from Enviropac, Inc., keeps the treater in a vertical position when unloading, even while delivering the seed treatment. The new Auger Mount joins the company's existing Direct Mount model. Both are able to dispense pure talc, an 80/20 talc/graphite mix or inoculates into the seed directly on the planter. An adjustable slide gate on both models helps match the flow of seed as it flows through the seed tender conveyor. The seed treaters offered by Enviropac, Inc., can handle both liquid and dry products. Enviropac, Inc., also offers a complete line of storage tanks and containment systems to complement its seed treaters. For more information, visit www.enviropacinc.com or call 800-752-1414.

Lite It Wireless Introduces Agricultural Tow Lights for Added Safety Lite It Wireless has announced the introduction of a new product, their Wireless Agricultural Tow Lights. These lights are designed to add safety on the road by providing lighting to slow-moving agricultural equipment, while helping farming and agricultural operations save money. When lighting conditions are not at an optimum level, agricultural equipment that is out on the road is challenging to see. This can lead to accidents and serious

what’s new t

injury when unsuspecting vehicles come in contact with that equipment. The Wireless Agricultural Tow Lights from Lite It Wireless are designed to lower this risk.

Worksaver's New Power Landscape Rakes

In the past, agricultural organizations had to rely on lights that ran via wires on the equipment. Each piece of equipment required multiple sets of implement safety lights wired directly on the vehicle or piece of equipment. This was costly, as each individual unit had to have its own lights, regardless of how frequently or infrequently they went on the road.

Worksaver, Inc. new Power Landscape Rakes remove debris or sod to prepare seedbed surfaces to create a new lawn or renovate an existing lawn. These landscape rakes also pulverize and set grade on new construction sites. Models are available for compact/mini skid steers, skid steers and 3-pt PTO driven tractors.

Wireless Agricultural Tow Lights do not have to be wired on the vehicle. They use strong 120-lb pull magnets to attach to any steel surface. The kit comes with two independent wireless lights, which are sufficient to light most equipment. Because they are not wired, but rather are attached via magnets, they can easily be used by more than one piece of equipment. This saves time and money for the owner who is using the lights, because there is no longer a need to purchase one light for every piece. To learn more visit www.LiteItWireless. com or call 800-490-3158. _____________________________________

As part of the Connected Farm™ solution, the new feature adds actual rainfall activity in 10-minute increments plus accumulated rainfall over a 24-hour period. With this comprehensive rainfall information, farmers can have a better understanding of the rainfall intensity, which can be used to make more informed decisions for irrigation and other farming operations. For example, if RainWave information shows that a large amount of rain fell in a short period of time, much of that rainfall may have run off the field and be unavailable to the crop. In contrast, if the information shows a slow steady rain, farmers may assume that the rainfall has a better chance of being absorbed in the soil and can be available to the crop.

JANUA RY 2014

“With RainWave’s added functionality, Trimble is placing another valuable piece of information in farmers’ hands,” said David Fitzpatrick, business area director for Trimble’s Agriculture Division. “By providing a better understanding of how rainfall may have impacted soil moisture levels, farmers can optimize their irrigation planning, fleet management and timing of materials application for nutrient and pest management.”

Case IH introduces the availability of two new air drills in 50- and 60-foot working widths. These larger-sized Precision Disk™ 500 air drills help growers cover more acres in short planting windows. “Case IH engineers have taken the best-in-class Precision Disk 500 design and made it even more productive with larger working widths and a five-section design,” says Dale Simpson, Case IH Seeding Marketing Manager. “Known for its accurate seed placement and ability to seed in diverse conditions – from no-till to reduced till to conventional till – the new Precision Disk 500 air drills are designed based on customer requests for wider operating widths to give them greater productivity.”

Seed More Acres In A Day Growers can take advantage of faster fill times by pairing these larger drills with Precision Air™ carts. These carts are available in sizes from 280 to 430 bushels in a tow-between or tow-behind configuration or 580 bushels in a tow-behind configuration. The larger sizes of the Precision Disk 500 are also an ideal match for higher-horsepower tractors, such as the new Case IH Steiger® 620 – the highest-horsepower agricultural tractor available in the market today with 682 maximum engine horsepower.

“The Steiger is a great pairing for the Precision Disk air drill,” says Simpson. “Together they allow producers to cover more acres, making the most of long workdays (continued)

and lowering input costs. The result is lower equipment investment per acre, and that can make a big impact on a grower’s bottom line.”

two or three augers. Models with two augers measure 48 inches high, while those with three augers measure 66 inches high.

The rugged, reliable frames of the Precision Disk 500 air drill hold up to changing field conditions – even going from no-till to conventional – with the main center frame oriented in a “V” to provide exceptional weight distribution and stability. The new frame design also makes transport easier, as the wide profile of the transport wheels provide the stability to move the disk drill confidently, even at higher road speeds.

Additionally, the I Series uses a proven, reliable chain drive, oversized gearbox, large bearings and thick steel construction for maximum durability. Maintenance is kept simple with easy-access shear bolts, extra-large skid shoes and a bolt-on cutting edge.

“Ease of transport is increasingly important as growers farm more land that is not contiguous,” says Simpson. “The Precision Disk vertical-fold design gives them the industry’s lowest transport height and narrow transport widths.” Additionally, there are no daily maintenance requirements, allowing you to stay in the field longer. “Maintenance requirements are almost nonexistent,” says Simpson. “There’s only one greaseable point on the row unit. And that is on the gauge wheel adjustment spindle – requiring greasing every 50 hours or once per season.” _____________________________________

Revolutionary Spare Tire Fuel System Introduced by Titan Fuel Tanks Titan Fuel Tanks recently introduced its new cross-linked polyethylene, Spare Tire Fuel System. The first-of-its-kind fuel system is designed to repurpose the space commonly used to stow a vehicle’s spare tire and fits most American-made diesel pick-up trucks made after 1999. The tank essentially doubles the fuel capacity of most pick-ups and unlike in-bed auxiliary fuel tank solutions, its underbody location means that it has no impact on the truck bed’s storage capacity. The lightweight, one-size-fits-all 30-pound tank is

easy for one person to install and includes mounting hardware, a filler kit and an electronic fuel transfer control unit that can be operated from the comfort of the cab. Titan has engineered the system for fast installation and all components come in a standardized package. “Titan’s new Spare Tire Fuel System has tremendous potential and is the most creative and efficient use of space I have seen,” said Kyle Shiminski, category director, Keystone Automotive Operations. “We are very excited to be one of the first to be stocking their product in our warehouses. The lightweight material, ease of installation and concealed mounting location make Titan’s system an excellent universal solution for adding fuel capacity.” Titan’s single tank design accommodates all applications, while mounting hardware unique to the host vehicle’s make and model allows the tank to securely attach to the cross members of the vehicle’s frame. Mounting brackets attach easily and are completely noninvasive, requiring no cutting, welding or drilling. Like the spare tire it replaces, a mounting stud slides through the middle of the tank, which is then secured with a mounting plate. “Diesel truck owners are always interested in extending their range and fuel capacity without compromising space in their trucks cargo bed and Titan’s new spare tire tank is an innovative solution to this challenge,” said Paul Nishanian, executive vice president for XDP. “XDP stocks a complete range of Titan fuel tanks and we’re excited about expanding our Titan offering with their new spare tire tank.” Titan’s electronic fuel transfer control unit gives the vehicle operator total flexibility in managing how they use their extra fuel capacity. The additional fuel can be held in reserve or transferred on-the-go and as the need arises. The controller’s illuminated user interface indicates the tank’s fuel level in increments of one tenth and features a single-touch button that starts the fuel transfer sequence. With one touch, fuel begins transferring from the Spare Tire Fuel Tank to the vehicle’s primary fuel tank and continues to flow until it is automatically stopped by the controller or the button is touched again. A red LED on the controller illuminates during the fuel transfer process. Titan’s distributors in the United States, Canada and Australia are expected to have the new polymer Spare Tire Fuel System in stock on or about December 1, 2013. JANUA RY 2014

Save Time and Stay Comfortable with Stull Feeders

The product contains a refined food-grade Saltwater Diatomaceous Earth (DE). Diatomaceous earth contains the skeletal remains of plankton, and the saltwater version is more effective than the freshwater option. This material kills insects, larvae and eggs on contact.

Farming operations with livestock understand the challenge of feeding those animals day in and day out. Hauling the feed is time consuming and hard work, but Stull Feeders has a solution. Their gravity flow and auger fed feeders make it possible to feed animals directly from an ATV or UTV, without having to leave the seat.

To make the material more effective, Insecto adds food proteins to serve as bait. This draws the insects through the DE, so they are killed quickly.

Today's farmers can choose from 200 and 400 pound capacity gravity flow feeders and 600 pound capacity auger fed feeders. Both designs mount to almost any ATV or UTV without difficulty. "This is important," said a company spokesperson, "because it allows the user to feed from the comfort and safety of their seat. There is no longer a need to get out and get in with the animals. Simply allow the feeder to deliver the feed." 200 Pound Stull Feeder with ATV Mounting Kit

DE is allowed in human and animal food products at a saturation weight much higher than the weight included in Insecto. This means that the product creates no concern with when used in operations growing food meant for human consumption. It's safe for children, pets and the environment and is listed with the Organic Materials Review Institute. As an Insecto spokesperson said, "Using Insecto ensures protection of your crop investment for less than 1 cent per bushel. Increased long-term productivity over traditional chemical pesticides makes Insecto an attractive, cost-effective alternative to all our pest control needs." Insecto is not a new product. It's been registered through the EPA since 1984. Since that time farmers and other agricultural entities have found it to be a safe and effective way to control all major groups of grain insects on all major stored grains. To learn more about Insecto, visit www.insecto.com or call 800-332-2002. ____________________________________

Stull Feeders have been providing their feeders since 2007. With this design, farmers can save time, which is crucial to running a successful operation, and avoid the need to haul five-gallon buckets to their animals over and over, which conserves energy. Finally, the feeders reduce feed loss from torn bags, which occur often when feeding by hand. For more information call 870-437-5743 or visit www. stullfeeders.com. ____________________________________

durable than others on the market which use a selfaligning bearing. When these self-aligning bearings get dry, they begin to spin in the hub. This ruins the hub. By using a pressed in bearing, Ron's Manufacturing eliminates this problem.

When agricultural operations need to prepare for spring planting in the fall, they can use the coulter to lightly till the soil, while also incorporating and sizing residue, so the field is ready for spring planting. This allows the soil to dry out well. In the early spring, the coulter's wavy design loosens and fluffs the soil. So the seedbed is ready for maximum growth and yield potential. For farmers who like to plant shallow, the coulter allows for shallow planting while still loosening the soil below the roots.

Make a Strip Till Machine from a Chisel Plow with Ron's Manufacturing

The Vertical Tillage Coulter Kit Attachment is a versatile piece that can be used in conventional tillage, no-till and conservation tillage operations.

With the help of Ron's Manufacturing, today's farmers can easily convert their chisel plow to a strip till machine with a simple coulter kit. Ron's coulters outshine the competition with their stronger design, so they can be used in rugged conditions and with high horsepower tractors.

____________________________________

Inventor and owner Ron Tschetter had this to say about the device, "A coulter kit from Ron's Manufacturing converts any chisel plow to a tool that prepares perfect seedbeds for planting." The coulters are known in the industry for their stronger bearings. Where the competition uses 1-Âź to 1-3/16 inch bearings, Ron's Manufacturing uses a 1-â…œ inch size. Ron's kits also have four large, flat bearings that press directly into the hub. This, combined with a stress proof steel shaft, helps the coulter kit to be more

The range of wireless communication between vehicles has been increased. Additional diagnostic feedback is available to the operator. A “go to here” feature has been added. This allows the operator to position the tractor in the field in the best possible area and wait for further instruction.

The speed of vehicle path planning has been improved. The “go to here” feature has proven to be very beneficial for the farmers. Users can instruct the tractor to go to a spot in the field that they deem most convenient in relation to the combine’s path, instead of having the system follow the combine through the field. This helps increase efficiency and saves time because the farmer can gauge when they will need to unload next and make sure the tractor is there waiting for them. With the help of Hoover Diesel Service, companies can increase their bottom line by decreasing fuel costs. Hoover Diesel offers fuel-efficient power units that help reduce operating costs. Portable units are more affordable than purchasing a new tractor when the company needs a stationary PTO with hydraulic power, not a mobile tractor. Engines for re- power and replacement applications are also available. For more information about Hoover Diesel, call 888-DIESEL-0 or visit www.hooverdiesel.com. ____________________________________

Kinze Manufacturing Continues Progress on Kinze Autonomy Kinze autonomous harvest system was leased to farmers this fall. Kinze® Manufacturing, Inc. continued its progress on Kinze Autonomy this season by leasing its autonomous harvest system to three farmers. While each of the farmers was a participant in the release preview held in fall 2012, this year Kinze representatives were not in the field overseeing operation of the system, which allowed the farmers to use the technology independently. “Because the technology was brand new last year, we took every precaution to make sure it ran properly,” said Rhett Schildroth, senior product manager at Kinze. “We made several minor improvements, and this year the farmers ran the technology by themselves. We’re now getting very positive feedback. The system just works – the farmers keep asking when they can buy it.” JANUA RY 2014

“The 'go to here' feature really opens up the field,” said Kent Armstrong, a farmer from Cameron, IL leasing the system. “After the corn is unloaded into the semi, I instruct the tractor to drive to the best place in the field to wait until I’m ready. It helps the tractor get to the combine for unloading in the most efficient way possible and opens up the field for combining.” Like Armstrong, both of the other participating farmers have experienced significant efficiency gains during this year’s harvest. Kinze continues to work toward full commercialization of the system. Visit Kinze.com for more information. ____________________________________

“A couple of weeks after we shipped the trailer, Steve reached out asking me when it would arrive,” Harland continued. “Tracking the shipment only confirmed that the trailer had arrived at the port, but Steve was there daily and had yet to see the trailer.” “For weeks, we were unable to figure out what had become of it,” Harland said. Until July – when a fishing boat found it – floating at sea. How it got there is quite the combination of events, as Steve detailed in the following message: “Unbeknownst to both of us, the trailer was dropped off at the loading yard, where it was immediately loaded onto a barge at the last minute.” “But when that barge arrived at the destination several weeks later, there was no trailer.” “Apparently, the barge hit a storm off southwest Alaska and lost the trailer overboard. It took a five story fall straight into the ocean and drifted for three weeks until it was found way out at sea by a fishing boat. The fishing boat towed the trailer (by rope, of course) back to land.” “It is apparently not that badly damaged, so that in itself is a testament to the strength and quality of your trailers. It’s partially crushed and I would imagine that after 3 weeks of floating around in the sea there would be salt water corrosion through everything." “We do rigorous testing on our trailers to make sure they are rugged enough to stand up in the roughest conditions,” says Loren Van Wyk, President of Thunder Creek Equipment. “Never did it cross our minds to test the integrity of our tanks by letting them float at sea for a few weeks… but it’s good to know they can.”

Missing Thunder Creek Trailer Found Floating at Sea Remained Relatively Unscathed Thunder Creek Equipment’s fuel and service trailers with industry-leading DEF delivery systems have brought efficiency to operations in many industries – agriculture, construction, oil fields, and more. It was the events that unfolded getting one particular trailer to a gold mine operation that has become a nearlegend testimony to the quality that Thunder Creek puts behind each trailer. “Last spring, I worked with a man named Steve who runs gold mining operation in Alaska,” recalls Jason Harland, Territory Sales Manager for Thunder Creek.

“Keeping the Family Farm in the Family”

Necessary Topics for a Successful Estate Plan By Michael Baron

Owner/Manager of Great Plains, Diversified Services, Inc., Bismarck, ND

Could You Be Stuck in Your Parents ‘Financial Limbo’? sis, and inadequate crop insurance – all rolled into a five year period of time.

Dear Michael: I have been working on my parent's farm since I got out of college. At the time I

Because of this, the land he owned, and the land that was added since then, has doubled in production and, of course, doubled in value. Actually, it's gone

If they should die now, I'd have to buy out my four brothers and sisters. With the price of land the way it is, I'm not certain I could do that? Was helping them out the worst decision I ever made?

The cryptic answer to your question is NO – you could not afford to buy out your siblings. In order to buy them out, lenders will require you to have at least a forty-five percent ownership stake in what you own, versus what you are buying. In other words, if you are buying one million dollars' worth of property, you'd better have four hundred and fifty-thousand dollars net worth to put on the line with this purchase. If you are buying out an eighty percent share from your siblings with no offsetting equity, it's going to be a short visit with your lender. Many young people fail to see this upcoming disaster looming in the future due to their parents' inability or unwillingness to deal with this situation. Some questions they may have are, "Will you ever get married?” If you are married, they will wonder if the woman you are married to is invested in the farm. They will wonder what happens if you end up getting a divorce. Your parents might also wonder if you are committed to farming the way they are (or were). And, they may also wonder what what would happen to the farm if YOU should die. Other questions rolling around may be, “How can we be fair and equitable to the other children in our estate plan?” Many people today are absolutely frozen waiting to see what land values do in the future. In your specific case, however, it really doesn't matter what the FMV of land is or is going to be. It will be whatever your parents will states you will pay for the land – or pay to your siblings. With no will, or an old, outdated will, this will be the auction value of the land as an auction is the only true way to establish the value of land on any given day. Unless you have millions of dollars in equity – as will other buyers who will be there have, you're not even going to make it to the second round of bidding. Let's take a lesson from our government. Right now, they are stuck with two very radically different viewpoints refusing to cooperate and run our government efficiently. Stuck in limbo, we all suffer the consequences. You, stuck in your parent's limbo, have the same issues and the same dire consequences ahead of you. You should be rewarded for coming back and increasing the value of your parents estate, and being a part of increasing the holdings of the estate with your labor and knowledge. But if your parents refuse or procrastinate on working with you, their partner in the operation, you better start building your own estate; land, machinery, buildings, and/or livestock outside your parents estate to make certain you have the equity necessary to buy what you can at the time of their deaths. Sometimes you're given a long time to accomplish this, and sometimes not. I've always said the average farm career is about forty-five years (age twenty to sixty-five, give or take). If you're now forty, your opportunities for income are now down to twenty-five years and each progressive year without planning, the margin gets thinner and thinner for success. ________________________________________

The gate firmly, but gently, guides the cows from the holding area into the parlor.

FARM and

RANCH LIFE By Dr. Michael R. Rosmann

What Would MacGyver Do? Like most farm people, I have moments when I have to rely on my own inventiveness to get out of a pinch. Farmers are familiar with unexpected happenings, like a radiator hose leak, when we have to figure out how to repair them and don’t have the handy duct tape that Red (Steve Green) of the Red Green Show frequently relies on.

6’

Frame Mounted Plow & 3 Pt. Plow Now Available √ Wheels run on float tip boot to control depth √ Color change on boot 4' mark √ 6’ plow will cut 6’3” up to 12” tile 9,800 lbs. √ 7’5” plow will cut 7’8” up to 12” tile 12,400 lbs. √ Front of plow 27 degrees √ Bottom of boot 10’ 4” long, this makes the plow run smooth & hold grade, no matter what the soil condition. √ Approximately 15’ long email: jhnsnplw@netins.net website: www.johnsondrainageplows.com

Yes, it’s called duct tape, not duck, although there is a brand named such. What would you do to fix the problem and be on your way? I’ve assembled a few episodes when I and others had to come up with novel solutions to serious problems without baling wire, duct tape or a pliers. I call them MacGyver moments, named after the quirky but entertaining television character, secret agent Angus MacGyver, whose show ran from 1985-92.

JANUA RY 2014

After I attended the seminar I realized an electric fence would work the same way as touching a tractor battery pole. The brief shock stopped my tachycardia. There is more to the story. You can read about it in my book, Excellent Joy: Fishing, Farming, Hunting and Psychology. I have a ranching friend whose diesel truck ran out of fuel on his way home from the grocery store twenty miles away. He remembered he had purchased vegetable oil for cooking. He poured it in the fuel tank and drove back to town for fuel and more cooking oil.

I looked up to Ivo because he seemed to have solutions for a lot of quandaries and was a dozen more years experienced than me. He taught me that if a bee or wasp stung me, all I had to do after removing any stingers was to mix water with dirt, then apply the mud to the sting site and let it dry.

Recently while in Washington DC for a meeting I had an allergic reaction while attending a congressional reception at which shrimp was served. I can consume most seafood without any problems because I react only to a particular type of shrimp and I didn’t know this shrimp was in the food I ate.

As the mud dried, it sucked the poison from the welt. After a couple hours usually there was little evidence of the sting.

By the time I got to my hotel room around 10:00 pm, my throat was swollen, my entire face was puffy and I didn’t have epinephrine or diphenhydramine with me. Breathing was becoming difficult.

As I picked up the oat bundles I uncovered a nest of bumble bees that promptly retaliated for disturbing their home. They stung me several times before I could get away from their attacks.

Medical tests turned up no evidence of a problem so the doctor said I was “good to go” with strenuous farm work. I continued to experience periodic and more prolonged episodes of tachycardia but I didn’t tell anyone. I especially didn’t want my wife to worry.

Growing up on a farm, I especially liked to help my father and the “hired man,” the term we used to refer to a farm hand who lived with us and helped with farm work until he earned enough to start his own farming operation or left to pursue another opportunity. One of our favorite hired men was Ivo.

When I reached thirteen, it was my turn to stack bundles of windrowed oats into shocks, for Dad didn’t yet own a combine and we threshed our oats. Ivo had moved on; Dad expected my older brother and me to assume his share of the work.

BLOCKER ENTERPRISES INC. 497 South 9th St. Lehighton, PA 18235 610-377-0440 www.blockers.com

I had developed tachycardia episodes two decades earlier. They were concerning enough that I had a cardiologist examine me before I began farming in my mid 30s after resigning my position as a professor at the University of Virginia.

I had no water to make a mud paste, for I had left my water jug at the field entrance a half mile away rather than to carry it as I encircled the field working. What to do? I determined to pee so I could make mud to apply to the bee stings. By the time I worked myself around the field to take a water-break, my half dozen bee welts had disappeared! In the early 1990s I attended a continuing education seminar where the presenting doctor told how one of his farmer patients treated bouts of irregular rapid heartbeats called tachycardia. The man grabbed the positive pole of a tractor battery and the shock acted like a defibrillator.

My hotel didn’t have antihistamines. I was going to have to make a trip to a 24-hour pharmacy. I determined if I jumped into the shower while it was running as cold as possible I could trigger the release of adrenalin, which acts like epinephrine. Ten minutes later I was breathing fine. Tell me about your MacGyver moments. With your permission, I will publish them in a future column, with–or without–your name, as you desire. _______________________________________________________ Dr. Michael R. Rosmann brings the perspective of a farmer in “Farm And Ranch Life”. Dr. Rosmann grew up on a mixed grain and livestock farm in Western Iowa where he experienced enjoyable hard work and 4-H, and witnessed the stresses that accompany farming and farm life. Dr. Rosmann developed the first mental health response in Iowa to the Farm Crisis of the 1980s. In 2001, Dr. Rosmann, along with partners in seven states, founded the nonprofit network, AgriWellness Inc. AgriWellness conducted research and provided counseling services to farm people. It became clearer that a specialized field – agricultural behavioral health – was needed to respond to the unique problems experienced by farmers, ranchers and others involved in agriculture. Email Dr. Rosmann at mike@agriwellness.org, or visit his website at www.agbehavioralhealth.com. You can call him at his office in Harlan, Iowa at 712-235-6100.

Beyond the Classroom

M

y senior year in high school I was able to take a course called “School to Career”. Other common names include job shadowing or work-study. This class allowed students, normally seniors, to choose a workplace to attend once a day for a certain amount of time. Depending on the workplace, the experience can be very hands-on and some can be just watching what your employers do. For example, if someone chose to school to career at the hospital they wouldn’t be able to do many hands-on activities, but more of just watching. This class allows students to experience multiple areas of a career and see if they might want to pursue a career in it.

Holly Knobbe, my employer in the Farnhamville, Iowa location has become an incredible mentor for me today. From my experience with her and everyone at FC, I have developed and maintained a strong relationship with FC today. I still attend FC networking events, visit the Farnhamville office and keep in contact with Holly frequently. When I asked Holly about the “School to Career” program she commented that, “It helped Kayla use her skills in the classroom and apply them to a real world setting. I think the program is also good for the employer because it allows them to increase a student’s experience and help them step out of their comfort zone.”

Sara Richardson is the teacher and strongly advises students to enroll in this class. She stated, “It allows students to use personal and class experience with everything they have learned in other areas to decide their ultimate career goal.” “It is definitely rewarding to see a student find out what they want to do.”

Overall, my experience with FC helped me choose my career choice in agriculture. I am so thankful that it led me in the right direction! I always advise younger high school students to take part in this class and take advantage of any opportunities like this. The more experience you have in a real world setting before college or entering the real world the better!

For my workplace, I chose Farmer’s Cooperative Company. A small location was located in Yetter, Iowa and I went there for about three months from August to October. I learned about what is done during harvest at an elevator and also could run the scale and computer by the end of my time there. I honestly learned a lot in Yetter but knew when I was done with my college experience I wanted to do more than what I did there. I then came in contact with Holly Knobbe, who is FC’s Talent Manager. Holly works out of the Farnhamville, Iowa office that is about 20 minutes from my high school. I decided to transfer to the Farnhamville office because of the abundance of opportunities. When looking back at my experience, I do not regret it one bit! I was able to participate in many projects and gain a lot of experience in the agriculture field. I also was able to communicate with many FC employees from different locations.

Essays From My Farmhouse Kitchen By Renae B. Vander Schaaf

Decade After Decade, Questions About the Farm Bill Remain the Same

A

griculture had faced some really tough years with the poor yields in 1934, which was repeated again two years later in 1936. Prices for crops rose, and for those who were blessed with abundant crops, things were good – really good. But for the farmer who saw his crops shrivel up from drought or wind, it was time to say, “Maybe next year will be better.”

At that time the Soil Conservation paid farmers to reduce their acreage of crops, such as wheat and corn for the purpose of planting soil-enriching crops like grasses, alfalfa, clover and so on. The reduction of row crop acres would also reduce surpluses; the interesting thing is that Wallace came from a pioneering family instrumental in developing hybrids, thus changing corn yields immensely.

Agriculture had been on a roller coaster ride. From 1900 to 1914, the value of farm production doubled, and farm population increased by a tenth. Farmers expanded, and took on debt; prices fell when WWI ended and the nations went back to producing food instead of fighting.

With one hand he was working to decrease surpluses while the other hand was working on increasing corn yields. No doubt that made for some interesting conversations around their kitchen table. His farm plan ideas did make for some powerful discussions between farming neighbors conversing over coffee and homemade doughnuts. Some said, “No government official will ever be wise enough to be able to tell how much cotton, corn or wheat a country will require!”

Then came the Great Depression and Dust Bowl years. About that time, Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace put forth a plan of the 'ever-normal granary'. The purpose of this plan was to bring about a situation under which the supply of farm produce from year to year would be about the same. When a surplus is produced, it would be stored and off the market. (In my opinion, the market still knew it was there and available, thus in effect keeping a cap on prices.) But when crop yields were low, the surplus would be released. (And in my opinion, it kept prices lower, so that farmers never received a bonus.)

Many felt that it would be better to let things continue as they were, rather than let the government dictate just how much of it [crop] should be sold, how much should be stored, and how much of every kind of crop should be raised. Those in the export business thought it would keep prices too high, and that the United States would not be able to compete with foreign countries. Others wondered how much money should be spent on farmers. At that time the government was spending half a billion dollars a year to help farmers. Implementing this farm bill would increase the government's expenditure greatly.

There were supporters of the Wallace's farm bill, too. They argued that unstable prices and production in agriculture hurt both the farmer and the country. They also reasoned that if the farm population could be placed in a prosperous position, the amount of money the government put forth would be money well spent, benefiting all Americans. At that pivotal point in agriculture history, the idea of having any type of farm bill was controversial. If Congress approved it, the Supreme Court could declare it unconstitutional, as it did a milder version of the law the previous year. That version was called the Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA). George Peek was appointed by President FDR to help write the AAA. When their objectives disagreed, Peek resigned. “The AAA became a means of buying the farmer's birthright as a preliminary to breaking down the whole individualistic system of the country,” he said. Well, seventy-some years later, what has the farm bill solved? It seems these same questions are still being asked. ———————————————————— Renae B. PENNYWISE Another Tool in the Fine Art of Money Management By Paula Vogelgesang Email: Pennywise at pennywise@gwtc.net.

Is Your “Financial Boat ” Sinking? I got a letter from a young couple a while back and they were full of all sorts of questions, like: “My wife and I both work full time and each get a paycheck every two weeks. We work darn hard for the money that we earn, but we honestly don’t know (or can’t figure out) where it all goes. Can you help us?” Does this sound familiar? All of us have struggled with managing the money that we do make at one time or another. Unfortunately, the answer to this problem is that dreaded ‘B’ word: Budget! At the beginning of the New Year, it seems like a good time to begin to plan how to manage the money in those paychecks, for a month, or maybe even a whole year. Now how about that? If you have unpaid bills piling up, creditors calling, credit cards that are close to ‘maxing out’, you do need to plug the leaks in your financial boat if the money doesn’t stretch to the end of the month – and a little beyond. And, the tools you will use in the beginning are fairly simple. You need a small spiral notebook and something to write with for yourself and another for anyone else who have a paycheck and/or access to the money/bank account/credit cards, etc. You and whoever else brings money into the house will use these tools to record every single penny you take in as income – or spend – for at least a month or more. The longer you track your spending, the easier it is to figure out where all of the hidden leaks exist. It might be a royal pain in the keister, but it really does get easier as time goes on. I learned this from a neighbor who has tracked his family spending for over 45 years. He just simply carries a little notebook and pen in his shirt pocket and records everything as the dollars leave his wallet. So, at the start of each day, put the date at the top of the page. Be sure to start a new page every day; it will make things easier in the long run. Then, make three column headings: Income IN, Income OUT, and Item (what you spend money on). Examples would be: Income IN: any money received, like your paycheck for 2 weeks, or perhaps the payback of a loan from a friend. Income OUT: the amount of money spent at a given transacation. Item: any time you spend money for any purpose, write it down, even if it’s a package of gum. Don’t feel guilty about spending. The whole purpose of the exercise is to find exactly where and how you spend your money. (These will be your longest entries.)

A18

Examples for Item and Income OUT might look like this: Coffee for morning commute: $1.59 Gas for the car: $43.78 (you could also chart the number of gallons purchased and mileage if you want to be exact) Lunch: $8.00 Haircut: $15.00 If you cash a check on Friday afternoon or take money from the ATM machine, and come Monday morning when the kids need lunch money and the wallet is empty, you will know exactly where, why and what the money was spent for. The bottle of soda you drank while waiting for daughter after basketball practice, the candy bar treat for each of the kids when you stopped for gas that evening, the pretty ‘to go’ cups of ice cream the kids spotted at the convenience store when you stopped in for gas on a Sunday afternoon drive – it all gets written down. You will then know exactly where the money went during the week, and what for, simply because you kept track. Knowledge is power; the power to help you and your family fine-tune the spending so you get maximum value from each dollar that you do send out of your pockets. At the end of the month you will need to make a bigger chart in a larger notebook to add it all up, and to have a really big picture of where all the money goes. Since every family has a different lifestyle due to the size of the family unit and income, each family has to make up their own chart accordingly. All of the expenses like these go in the Income OUT column: Rent/mortgage payment, utilities (heat, lights, phone, internet), food, (make a separate category for food eaten away from home), clothing, car expenses (fuel, batteries, oil, repairs, etc.) Other expenses: School fees, cell phones for the kids, gym memberships, etc. Remember, this process won’t work if you don’t do the work. And yes, it is a pain to start with, but it gets easier in time. Trust me! As I am writing this column (mid-November), the news is full of yet more folks losing their jobs – jobs they have had for years – or having their hours cut to the bone due to the insurance the company is required to fund. Many folks will soon be facing credit card bills from their Christmas spending (check that interest rate – talk about shock), plus the extra heating costs and other debts. Learning to live within, or beneath your ‘means’ (income) is the best long term insurance any family can have. 'Til Next Time, Paula —————————————————————————————— If you have tips or ideas to share, send them to Pennywise, Box 518, Kadoka, SD 57543 or better yet, email Pennywise at pennywise@gwtc.net. Tips for How to Eat Better AND Save Money on Food FREEZERS ARE AN INVESTMENT Invest in a freezer and enjoy the accumulated savings as time goes by. You can buy meats on sale and freeze to prepare many meals. Favorite vegetables can be purchased on sale and frozen for future use. I buy the biggest turkey I can find during the holidays, cook it and freeze the extra meat for future meals. I can make turkey and noodles, turkey pot pie, turkey casseroles of all kinds. I also save the bones, cook them, take off the bits of meat and have it for turkey soup. One big turkey can easily make around eight meals for my family for the onetime cost. (Of course, I couldn’t do any of that without the freezer.) My next purchase will be a quarter of beef from a local locker place. I can pay one price and get roasts, steaks, burger, stew meat, etc., and for quite a savings over supermarket prices. I am also going to buy up bread when it’s on sale. My grocer puts in on special for less than half price when it gets close to the sell-by date. (tip submitted by JC, SD) (Pennywise says: I personally have used my freezer for years to stretch my grocery dollars. When I make spaghetti, lasagna or any other casserole dish, part of it goes in the freezer for a future ‘quick meal’. Sometimes everyone can have a different dish, especially if the food is frozen in individual servings. Uncle Glen used to have ‘MUSGO’ day. He would open the fridge, lay out all the little dishes of past-cooked meals and say, “This 'musgo, that musgo’, etc. etc…" That was the way he used up all of the leftovers, although I prefer to call them ‘planned overs'!)

EAT AT HOME! SJ writes: I work full time and so does my husband. We have three children involved in all kinds of sports and other activities at school and at church and the expense of ‘eating out’ all the time was really wrecking the budget. So, we got out the slow cooker and figured out recipes we could put together the night before, refrigerate and set in

Pennywise: Tips for How to Eat Better AND Save Money on Food the cooker container in the morning, turn it on and supper will be hot and ready when we gather after work and school. We eat together as a family (sometimes early, depending on the timing) and then go off to the baseball, basketball, soccer game or whatever other activity the children are involved in at the time. Feeding five people at home is definitely cheaper than buying for five at the concession stands or fast food places. I also think it is healthier for all of us. And best of all, the kids are learning how to shop for the best deals on groceries – and how to cook! How great is that? (tip submitted by SJ, SD)

KEEP A LIST! I have a set amount of money to use for food every month, so I use the grocery store sale flyers to plan my meals for the week around what is on sale. I don’t take a daily newspaper, but will purchase one on Wednesdays because that is when all the sales for the weekend are advertised. I have learned that certain basic foods come on sale about once every 6 to 8 weeks, so will stock up on the cream soups for basic casseroles when they are basically half-price, and that amount will last me for a couple of months. I also buy canned tuna and other staple canned goods only when they are on sale and in this way, I can stay on budget and feed my family healthy foods they like. The money I save on the sale items means I can buy more of the fresh fruits and vegetables to insure that my children are well fed.

We also pack the lunches for our school aged children from foods at home. I discovered that they were throwing away over half of their meal at school because they ‘didn’t like’ the food or the way it was prepared, so this also saves us money and the school money because they aren’t tossing food someone else would eat. (My kids can’t have gluten so many of the breaded items are OUT!) (tip submitted by WT, ND)

USE THAT SLOW COOKER I bought a slow cooker at a thrift store for $5 and it’s the best money I’ve ever spent. I can buy a pound of cheap beef, turkey or chicken and cook it into soup or stew in a few hours with very little effort. I make beef stew with potatoes, carrots and onions, pour on some dissolved bouillon cubes and go to work for the day. When I get home, I have a meal for me and my kids for under $3 for the five of us, and that's including two teenagers! Everyone should invest in a slow cooker – even the new ones aren’t that expensive and can really save you a lot of money. (tip submitted by SB, NE)

I ‘don’t buy’ fancy dishcloths. I reuse the washcloths from the bathroom when they get a little ragged around the edges. I also use them as scrub rags for my floors. If I have a spill or sticky spot, when I’m done washing dishes, I get the rag wet, wring it out, drop it on the floor and use my foot to push the wet rag over the icky spot. Takes about two seconds and sure keeps the floors cleaner. Of course, the minute that job is done, the dirty scrub rag goes straight to the wash. (tip submitted by MB, Il)

Take a visual approach to solving problems Wrestling with a problem isn’t always the best way to generate a creative solution. A better approach is often to step back and quietly visualize the answer you’re looking for. Follow these steps: • Focus on what you want. This sounds easy, but keeping your mind free of obstacles and distractions can be difficult. Try to clear your thoughts of everything but the outcome you need. Don’t fight negative thoughts—just let them flow out of your brain so you can concentrate on the positive. • Make a movie in your mind. We tend to see things in pictures more strongly than we can visualize abstract concepts like numbers and theories. Think of your problem in visual terms and try looking at it— and your solutions—from different angles. Bring your senses into play: Imagine what your idea would feel like, sound like, or even smell like. • Take your time. The solution may not come all at once. Give yourself time to get used to the process so you’re not forcing ideas too hard. With practice, you’ll learn how to quickly relax your mind and let it explore problems and situations without effort.

FARM BILL COMMENTARY | by Renae B. Vander Schaaf (agripen@live.com)

Decade After Decade, Questions About the Farm Bill Remain the Same

A

griculture had faced some really tough years with the poor yields in 1934, which was repeated again two years later in 1936.

Prices for crops rose, and for those who were blessed with abundant crops, things were good – really good. But for the farmer who saw his crops shrivel up from drought or wind, it was time to say, “Maybe next year will be better.” Agriculture had been on a roller coaster ride. From 1900 to 1914, the value of farm production doubled, and farm population increased by a tenth. Farmers expanded, and took on debt; prices fell when WWI ended and the nations went back to producing food instead of fighting. (In my opinion, the market still knew it was there and available, thus in effect keeping a cap on prices.) But when crop yields were low, the surplus would be

released. (And in my opinion, it kept prices lower, so that farmers never received a bonus.) At that time the Soil Conservation paid farmers to reduce their acreage of crops, such as wheat and corn for the purpose of planting soil-enriching crops like grasses, alfalfa, clover and so on. The reduction of row crop acres would also reduce surpluses; the interesting thing is that Wallace came from a pioneering family instrumental in developing hybrids, thus changing corn yields immensely. With one hand he was working to decrease surpluses while the other hand was working on increasing corn yields. No doubt that made for some interesting conversations around their kitchen table. His farm plan ideas did make for some powerful discussions between farming neighbors conversing over coffee and homemade doughnuts. Some said, “No government official will ever be wise enough to be able to tell how much cotton, corn or wheat a country will require!” Many felt that it would be better to let things continue as they were, rather than let the government dictate just how much of it [crop] should be sold, how much should be stored, and how much of every kind of crop should be raised. Those in the export business thought it would keep prices too high, and that the United States would not be able to compete with foreign countries. Others wondered how much money should

be spent on farmers. It seems these same questions are still being asked.

clear clutter, organize your home, & reclaim your life by Barbara Tako — Motivational Speaker and Author

Will You Shop ‘Til You Drop – or Simplify Christmas Shopping? “Tis the season to go shopping. Shop. Shop. Shop. Shop. Shop. Then, go get more!” Parking lots are jammed. Sidewalks are slippery. Stores are crowded. What is the family holiday shopper to do? Don’t get me wrong. I love Christmas. Christmas is my family tradition, and other holiday traditions may find helpful ideas here too. I listen to the same sentimental Christmas music over and over until my spouse is ready to hide the CDs. I thrill to the scent of cinnamon candles burning, and I melt in the glow of the holiday twinkle lights I put around the inside of my children’s bedroom windows. I just dread the shopping. I worry about what to get everybody this year. Will I find the right gifts? Will I spend too little or too much for each person? Will I remember to buy for everyone I am “supposed” to? Will the stores have what I am looking for? Will they have the right sizes? Will I get everything bought, wrapped, and mailed in time to enjoy any holiday fun with my family, or will I still be scrambling and stressing to the bitter end?

Here are some thoughts that help me tackle these concerns. Simplify Christmas shopping by keeping wish lists throughout the year for you and for family members. I had heard that the average American household spends about $2,000 each Christmas. If we really spend that much, maybe we could spend it on things people really want and need. I try to write down gift ideas family members mention as they come up during the year. If my spouse eyes up a power tool when we are in the hardware store in the spring, I go home and write down the model before I forget. If my children enthusiastically describe a toy they saw at a friend’s house in the fall, I quickly jot it down. I am also not afraid to copy my Aunt Patty’s common sense shopping-for-the-masses strategy. Here was her trick: Apply a one-size-fits-all gift to as many people on your list as possible. Come up with one neat idea, possibly one of the gifts of the year that everyone is advertising, and then get it for everyone. Here are ideas my aunt used over the years: fruit baskets, calendars, books, and pajamas. When I shop, I try to make it as easy as possible. Let your fingers, not your feet, do the work—on the phone or on the Internet. Call ahead to be sure a store has what you want. Order as much as you can through mail-order catalogs or the Internet. In addition to avoiding the crowds and wasting precious travel time, you can find out right away if the size you need is available, and you can shop this way any time of the day or night when it is convenient for you (and the children are asleep). My other personal preference is to shop very locally, buying from local merchants in my own JANUA RY 2014

community. Community support begins at home.

Rules? There are gift-giving rules?! Do you buy into any of the unwritten gift buying “rules” out there? No? What about these: If someone buys a gift for you, do you rush out and get them a gift too? (Oh, sorry, I left yours at home today. I’ll bring it tomorrow.) If you buy for someone one year does that set up the expectation that you buy for that person every year after that? Do you try to spend the same amount of money for someone that you think they will spend on you? Do you try to spend the same amount on all people who fall into the same category of your life—like all the grandchildren, siblings, nieces or nephews? Do you ever buy someone the perfect gift and then worry: Did I already get this for him or her last year? (Keep notes of what you get people each year in your Christmas folder to prevent agonizing about that.) Do you ever find the perfect gift for someone and then fret that you didn’t spend enough? Did you put the perfect gift back and get something bigger (something you suspect they won’t enjoy as much), or do you run out to get a supplemental “filler” gift just to spend “enough?” Consider shifting your holiday shopping perspective if you related to any of the rule traps above. If you don’t see yourself following any of these “rules,” I congratulate you. If you did, maybe it is time to simplify your Christmas by bending some of these holiday shopping “rules” a little. The Christmas police won’t come take you away if you do, and holiday shopping might be a little simpler and more pleasant.

a family game, DVD, or magazine subscription related to a hobby or activity you know they do as a family.

Adults—Make a donation in their name to charity, or try retaurant, theater, or shopping gift certificates, or lessons, or a magazine subscription for a hobby or interest that they have.

Seniors—Try donations, restaurant or grocery gift certificates, prepaid gas or phone cards if they go south in the winter, errand running, snow shoveling, the services of a handyman, audio books, or a large-type version of a newspaper. Teenagers/college students—Find a lesson or event pertaining to a hobby or interest they have, minutes for their cell phone, concert or sporting event tickets, or gift cards. Children— Consider gift certificates so they get to choose, or give the gift of time doing something they enjoy with them, lessons (Parents appreciate help with things like lessons, sports equipment, or savings bonds for education.), or homemade craft/dress-up kits.

Everyone—Purchase disposable gifts including restaurant, grocery, gas gift cards, perfume, lotion, candles, and food. These can be used up instead of adding to anyone’s clutter collection.

Clutter-free Christmas Gift Ideas Sometimes enough is enough, and many of us are blessed to have more than enough. This year consider simple, nonmaterial, functional gifts that people may appreciate more than “the usual” because these gifts won’t add to their closet clutter! Here are some ideas to get you started.

Teachers/Sunday school teachers/school bus drivers— Get together with several people to get one large item rather than pummeling them with knick-knacks. Or, try bookstore, restaurant, or shopping gift certificates accompanied by a kind note expressing your appreciation.

Families—If you have been buying for each person in a family, consider buying one gift for the entire family. Get

“PROFITS GROW WITH KNIGHTRO”

Would Jesus Have Survived Without a Stable Full of Livestock? Though the version may change, the message of the stable being the centerpiece of Christmas remains the same.

people would scoff at anyone who told them the Messiah lay in the arms of a teenager, residing in the comfort of a stable on the outskirts of their village. They were all too busy to even consider the possibility.

Were someone to chance upon the stable on the outskirts of Bethlehem that morning, what a peculiar scene they would have beheld:

Those who missed his Majesty’s arrival that night, missed it not because of evil acts or malice; no — they missed it because they simply weren’t looking.

The stable smells like all stables do. The stench of urine, dung, and sheep hangs pungently in the air. The ground is hard, the hay scarce. Cobwebs cling to the ceiling, and a mouse scurries across the dirt floor.

Little has changed in the last two thousand years, has it? We have become so far removed from the rigors of reality that we can no longer connect with the miracle of Christmas. The Christmas story seems so far removed from today’s world, that it almost seems unbelievable. The bright lights and tinsel of modern day Christmas has driven Christ further away. The real gift of life has become over shadowed by the gifts of materialism — just stuff!

Off to one side sit a group of shepherds. They are in awe, no doubt with amazement. Their night watch had been explosion of light from heaven and a symphony of angels. God goes to those who have time to hear him — so on this cloudless night he went to simple shepherds in the stable. Near the young mother sits the weary father. If anyone is dozing, he is. He can’t remember the last time he sat down. And now that the excitement has subsided a bit, now that Mary and the baby are comfortable, he leans against the wall of the stable and feels his eyes grow heavy. He still hasn’t figured it all out. The mystery of the event puzzles him, but he hasn’t the energy to wrestle with the questions. What’s important is that the baby is fine and that Mary is safe. As sleep comes he remembers the name the angel told him to use: “Jesus – we will call him Jesus”. Wide awake is Mary. My, how young she looks! Her head rests on the soft leather of Joseph’s saddle. The pain has been eclipsed by wonder. She looks into the face of the baby — her son, her lord, her majesty. At this point in history, the human being who best understands who God is, and what he is doing, is a teenage girl in a smelly stable. Mary knows she is holding God. So this is he. She remembers the words of the angel: “His kingdom will never end.” Like that of the newborn calf in the stall next to them, he looked like anything but a king. His

face is prunish and red. His cry, though strong and healthy, is still the helpless and piercing cry of a baby. And he is absolutely dependent upon Mary for his well-being. Majesty in the midst of the mundane, holiness in the filth of manure and sweat, divinity entering the world on the floor of a stable, though the womb of a teenager and in the presence of a carpenter. As she lays him in the manager, she touches the face of the infant-God. “How long was your journey?” This baby had overlooked the universe. These rags keeping him warm were the robes of eternity. His golden throne room had been abandoned in favor of a dirty sheep pen, and worshiping angels had been replaced with kind, but bewildered shepherds. Meanwhile the city hums. The merchants are unaware that God has visited their planet. They would never believe that he had just sent God into the cold of a winter night. And the

As the association of time and circumstances continue to drift away from the reality of the miracle of Christmas, it is easy to understand that believing was easier when times were simpler. The reality of the world which man has made is causing many to lose their way. So, all of you livestock producers, listen up. You’ve got an easier row to hoe than those less fortunate than you. The stable is the centerpiece of your labors as well as the centerpiece of Christmas. Thank God for livestock at the time of the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! As we celebrate the season of Christmas, we are reminded of the role that livestock played in the life of Jesus. His very survival at the time of his birth was dependent upon the heat and warmth of a barn full of livestock. To have laid him in a manger, protected from harms way, where the radiant body heat of the animals would keep him warm was as much a part of the miracle as the miracle itself. The miracle that continues to sustain the world in these difficult times of war, the economy, and terror will continue to give us hope for all eternity. To have been born of the Virgin Mary was miraculous, but to have survived is perhaps the greatest role that livestock has ever played in our lives. We like to think of livestock as our primary source of protein, nourishment, and satiety value, like that of no other food. For those reasons alone we will always be grateful for God’s creation; especially meat for the table. But how much thought have we ever given that Jesus may never have survived that first night on earth if it hadn’t been for the comfort provided by that lowly barn full of God’s creatures? Merry Christmas To All!

Pony Tales by PONTY

The Love of a Father No greater gift than that of a Father’s love to his three daughters could have been shared on this — his final Christmas. Not to be perceived as a Christmas unlike that of any past family celebration, it was Christmas as usual, or at least it seemed that way. But for one there must have been an innate awareness of something special yet to come. So it was Ron Breding, my brother-inlaw, my sister’s husband, and father to three beautiful daughters that must have sensed the coming of the Lord.
