Perten Instruments Develops Near-Infrared Grain Analyzer for Farm Use New instrument built for on-farm grain analysis is accurate, rugged, and economical. Near-infrared (NIR) grain testing has been a fixture at large elevators and grain processors for years, and an on-farm grain analyzer has been in demand for some time. The demands on such an instrument are high, however, and must balance many requirements. It must be rugged and robust. It must be portable enough to tote around the field. It must be simple to operate, but sophisticated enough to provide accuracy similar to elevator and lab instruments. And it must do it all in a cost-effective manner.

analyses helping users to control grain drying, perform field and load-out spot checks, and determine optimal harvest times. “The IM 8800 is really a first for farmers. Its accuracy is similar to instruments used at elevators, but is economical enough for farm use,” Business Area Manager Henrik Andrén reports. He adds, “The instrument allows farmers to identify their highest value grain and ship it to their more demanding customers who are willing to pay premiums for high quality.” To learn more visit www.perten.com. ____________________________________

Yamaha Announces All-New 2015 Viking VI Side-by-Side Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A., announces a new utility Side-by-Side (SxS) vehicle: the all-new 2015 Viking VI EPS six-person SxS. The extended cab Viking VI combines Yamaha performance and durability with the comfort and convenience of a Viking—now with maximum headroom, legroom and shoulder room for six occupants. Every Yamaha Viking and Viking VI is being assembled in the U.S.A. at Yamaha’s factory in Newnan, Georgia, for worldwide distribution.

Case IH Introduces True-Tandem 345 Seed Bed Disk Harrow The new True-Tandem™ 345 seed bed disk harrow is a great addition to the field-proven Case IH tillage legacy. With key advances that help improve field finish, durability and machine productivity, the equipment provides growers with optimum results. “The True-Tandem 345 makes short work of Bt corn and other residue and leaves a level soil finish out the back in spring or fall,” says Tim Nix, Case IH Tillage Marketing Manager. “We love to put our disk harrows in the field next to any other brand and watch the growers react.”

Similar to the three-seat Viking introduced last summer, the new Viking VI is made for tough off-road duty boasting Yamaha’s industry-leading Ultramatic™ fully automatic transmission, On-Command® four-wheel drive system, Electric Power Steering (EPS) and Yamaha’s proven and powerful 700cc-class engine. With 600-pounds hauling and 1,500-pounds towing, Viking VI is made to be the toughest, hardest-working and most off-road-capable six-person SxS ever.

The Inframatic 8800 was developed to address these requirements. It uses solid state components and diode array technology meaning no moving optical components. The lack of moving parts allows Perten Instruments to and match instruments at the factory - one instrument is exactly like the next. This means the instruments are accurate, repeatable, and reproducible.

“Yamaha’s latest all-new Side-by-Side, the Viking VI, is a comfortable, convenient, tough and off-road-capable vehicle, and we expect to see it working ranches and hauling hunters from Texas to California, Oregon to Pennsylvania and everywhere in between,” said Steve Nessl, Yamaha’s ATV/SxS group marketing manager. “The Viking VI is the natural evolution of a platform and concept that has captured awards, praise and market share since we launched the initial Viking last summer. Yamaha customers are excited and dealers are

The Inframatic 8800 includes many features. It is highly portable as it is small, lightweight and can be operated for up to two hours on its internal battery. It incorporates a GPS allowing farmers to identify pockets of high value grain. These results can be plotted on a map allowing farmers to plan harvest and binning strategies. The rapid analysis (moisture and protein results in less than 90 seconds) provides nearly instantaneous

Growers have several customization options. The optional rolling reel basket with active hydraulic down pressure uses the same patented, double-edge bent bar found on the Ecolo-Tiger® 875 and helps to size any remaining large clods and further condition the soil ahead of the planter. Producers also can choose: •

A three-bar coil tine harrow for excellent leveling and residue flow, adjustable tine angle and down pressure A rear hitch for pulling a Case IH Crumbler seed bed conditioner

Unlike competitive offset disk harrows, the TrueTandem 345’s symmetrical design offers a long life of straight, easy pulling in the roughest field conditions. The Earth Metal® blades on the 345 effectively size and mix residue from today’s hardiest hybrids, unlock-

ing the nutrients and leaving the soil smooth and ready for planting. The 22-inch Earth Metal blades have flat, crimped centers for added strength and long life, and a tighter fit with the spools. They are 30 percent stronger and last up to 20 percent longer than conventional blades. In addition, an improved scraper design on the 345 increases durability and minimizes plugging. Case IH also increased the use of greaseless bearings on hinges, rockshafts and baskets, which will significantly decrease routine maintenance on the 345. Nix says farmers also will appreciate the walking tandem design of the True-Tandem 345 mainframe and wing wheels. “They move independently and stay on the ground better, while providing a smoother ride at faster speeds,” he continues. “So the disks are staying at the proper level and not bouncing in and out of the soil.” New stubble-resistant tires help prevent flats from tough residue. New class 3 powder coat paint adds years of life to the finish. In addition, every True-Tandem 345 seed bed disk harrow will come equipped with LED lighting, for better nighttime visibility and longer light life. The 345 replaces the Case IH True-Tandem 340 and will be available in working widths from 22 to 34 feet, in three-foot increments. Orders are being accepted now for delivery in early 2015. Case IH is simplifying the decision of choosing the right red tractor for many operations with the new digital Right Red Tractor tool. “We designed the Right Red Tractor digital tool in the spirit of helping producers be ready to make beneficial equipment purchasing decisions for their operations,” says Zach Hetterick, Tractor Marketing Manager for Case IH. “From landscaping to livestock, from feedlot to vineyard, Case IH has a tractor that will meet customers’ needs and we are dedicated to helping them find it.” Using the Right Red Tractor digital tool is simple for producers looking for a tractor up to 120 horsepower. After logging on to caseih.com/RightRedTractor, producers are asked five simple questions they need to consider when purchasing a new tractor. The questions include how much they will be using the tractor, how much power they will need, whether or not they would like a cab, etc. As soon as the questions are answered, the producer gets a recommendation of which Case IH model will best meet their needs.

Helping Producers Meet Their Needs The Right Red Tractor tool was designed specifically as a digital tool, optimized for mobile use, because research shows producers are increasingly using mobile technologies. Float Mobile Learning, a consulting firm that develops mobile strategies for major agricultural organizations, conducted research in 2012 that shows ninety-four percent of producers own a mobile phone or smartphone and smartphone adoption among U.S. producers jumped from 10 percent in 2010 to 40 percent a year later.

The newly designed B50-Series ROPS compact tractors offer endless capabilities with the highest PTO horsepower ever for a B-Series tractor. Kubota Tractor Corporation has introduced three new models to its B50-Series compact tractors, adding the newly designed B2650 and B3350 ROPS tractors and the new B3350SU Special Utility tractor to its lineup. Available now at dealerships nationwide, the new Kubota B50-Series ROPS tractors offer class-leading luxury with user-friendly control layout, and powerful Kubota diesel engines that meet the latest Tier IV emission regulations. The three new models complement the line’s cab models released last year.

New Digital Tool Helps Producers Find the Right Red Tractor for Their Operation

ROPS Models Raise the Bar in Safety and Comfort The Kubota B50-Series ROPS models are smart and ergonomically designed. From the deluxe suspension seat designed to absorb shock and reduce operator fatigue, to a tilt-steering wheel and easy-to-read LCD digital panel, the B50-Series allows for a comfortable driving position and nimble operation. Levers are logically arranged on the left and right consoles, and switches are concentrated around the instrument panel. In addition, the brake pedal is positioned on the left side of the steering column for more right-side foot space and easier operation of the HST pedal. Also, the front grill and newly designed headlamps are now integrated into the one-piece metal hood for easier opening and closing and more convenient access to the engine to address any maintenance needs.

Benefits of a Burchland GSX Drive Over Hopper

East Lake Energy Offers Efficient Heating Options

Burchland introduced the Drive Over Hopper in July 2009. The GSX Drive Over Hopper is designed to save farmers’ time during harvest. This equipment speeds up the unloading of grain trucks at bin locations.

East Lake Energy began as a family business in 2009. The company manufactures insulated pipes and sells pipe, pellet stoves, heat exchangers, boilers, thermal solar systems and hanging heaters to both wholesale and retail markets. East Lake Energy also has fittings, parts and pumps for outdoor wood boilers and in-floor heating systems.

Without a drive over feature, a hopper bottom truck takes longer to dump. A shuttle auger or swing hopper must be pushed under the truck. The GSX reduces this time, every time. The Burchland Drive Over can be used with trailers that do not have higher agricultural style hoppers because the equipment is built lower than regular swing hoppers. The deck is 7 3/8” in height. Ramps are 60 inches in length, providing a gentle slope.

The company still operates as a family business and now manufactures insulated Pex for underground use. East Lake Energy sells the insulated Pex and Pex fittings to dealers and the general public. With the large increase in propane prices, alternative heating systems are becoming more attractive. Outdoor wood boilers are particularly popular in rural settings.

The GSX has a 48 inch long opening allowing operators to fully open the hopper doors with the need to reposition the truck. When dumping is complete there is no need to swing or roll hoppers out of the way, simply drive away.

The Driver Over provides an extended platform allowing operators an easy, safe area for stepping across the hopper during the unloading process. This feature helps operators save time by reducing the steps needed every time dumping is performed.

Check out the equipment at www.burchlandag.com.

The arms are engineered for heavy-duty use and are covered by a lifetime warranty.

Many features are included that set the Burchland GSX apart from other hoppers. Spring assisted ramps allow for one person set-up and transport. The Drive Over Hopper can easily be towed behind a pickup or tractor.

60” ramps create a gentle slope that any truck can climb. Spring loaded ramps are easy to lift.

and workshops. These systems offer a warm surface for walking while radiating heat into the room.

Insulated pipe is available in three types; Non/O2/Pex, O2/Pex and Pex/AL/Pex. The Non/O2 Pex is for use in non-pressurized boiler systems. Pex/Al/Pex provides an oxygen barrier and larger I.D. for greater flow. The insulation is closed cell polypropylene encased in micro foil. Sleeving is heavy-duty 4 inch corrugated plastic drain pipe. This insulated piping loses less than one degree per 100 feet, running from the boiler to the house. The extra efficiency means that less wood is consumed and boilers can have longer burn durations. Solar thermal systems can be connected to outdoor boilers to increase the output. During the summer, this can supply the hot water needed for a home. In-floor radiant heat systems provide greater comfort for homes

The ProTrap® electric hopper door opener slides doors open and closes them while the operator is able to stay back and out of the way of any dust. The opener is manufactured with all-metal housing and gears designed to handle hard stopping. The motor features high-efficiency planetary gears and a circuit breaker located at the battery provides additional protection. The SMARTwire™ harness system is sealed to protect against corrosion, and the harness allows for fast installation with plug-and-play set up. SMART2™ remote gives digital feedback and allows for specific positioning of the traps and tarp. Tarps can be set to automatically stop before hitting the stops, reducing wear and tear on the system. In addition, the SMART2™ remote can operate up to 100 devices at a distance of over 100 feet. For more information call 800-474-8756 or visit www.shurco.com.

White Planters Shares Tips for Using Plant Emergence for Planter Evaluation The perfect time for farmers to judge whether or not their planters performed up to expectations is when farmers evaluate young plants at emergence. Driven by pressure from higher costs, farmers expect more return than ever on their investment in seed. A consistently accurate planter plays a vital role in farmers' ability to see their return become a reality. "Farmers only get 30 to 40 opportunities to plant in their entire career," said Mark Hanna, extension agricultural engineer with Iowa State University. Farmers can benefit from taking a step back and evaluating how effective their planting was to make changes for next year. Plant emergence can reveal poor planter performance in several ways, including:

Skips and Doubles Skips and doubles in fields hurt farmers' expected yield by causing two plants to share vital resources or leave precious field space un-utilized. A skip indicates an empty space in a row where a seed either was not planted or did not grow. Although there can be many causes for a seed skip, the most likely cause is a problem with the planter, meaning a seed failed to drop where the farmer calibrated a drop. Often, skips and doubles are caused by a planter that interrupts and inefficiently moves seed from hopper to placement. This can be caused by improper pickup of the seed from the hopper, interruptions in the vacuum system responsible for

holding the seed, or ricocheting inside the seed tube before the seed reaches the ground. If the planter fails once, it will likely fail again in another location, causing a gap in the expected amount of plant growth versus actual. A skip in one part of the field can result in a double planting in another location. When a double happens, two plants have to share water, sunlight and space rationed for one plant. If you have doubles, two plants compete for the same nutrients, said Randy Peterson, AGCO product specialist for White Planters. If you notice a couple skips or doubles here and there, multiply that over your whole field, and you're talking about real money. You'll have wasted seed and reduced yield.

Inconsistent Emergence Plant emergence over a wide range of days hurts the entire farming cycle. When some plants grow at a faster rate than others, the tallest plants shade the shortest plants, hurting plant development. Even if the plants that emerged at a later date than others do grow to fruition, they are more likely to have varying moisture content, thus shifting the harvesting schedule and costing the farmer time and money. Timing of emergence is dependent on accuracy of the planter depth indicator through the entire depth range, proper formation of a seed trench and proper closing of the trench. Any inaccuracy or inconsistency will cause variation in the timing of plant emergence.

Uneven Spacing Unevenly spaced plants cause imbalanced distribution of sun and water. Just as doubles cause plants to fight

for the same sunlight, water and nutrients, unevenly spaced seed also causes irregular distribution of shared resources. If seed moving through a planter has heavy contact with the equipment, interruptions in movement can cause inefficiencies in spacing. Most planters use air systems to convey and secure the seed before dropping it in the ground. When these air sources are interrupted, spacing and seed singulation can suffer.

Rough Openings, Inconsistent Seed Trench Depth Even before emergence, rough openings and inconsistent seed trench depth can put planter ineffectiveness on display. Inconsistent seed trenches affect plant spacing and depth and will ultimately result in inaccurate planting. You need to have a good seed trench for planting to go well, Peterson said. It's the foundation for the seed to drop into, and it needs to be perfect. It should look like a wall, so the seed has room to be positioned correctly before the soil moves in around it. Offset opener discs create uneven wear, causing additional maintenance intervals and a seed trench that may require positioning the gauge wheels trailing the point of seed delivery allowing for inconsistent depth of seed placement. The most important evaluation to make about emergence is unified timing, Hanna said. Equal emergence and plant spacing provides plants that grow at the same rate, gather sunlight, nutrients and moisture equally and pollinate at the same time for higher yields. This is an ideal time of year to get out and read your field and your planter's report cards.

The recently released White PlantersTM 9000 Series can help growers combat these types of emergence problems by increasing planting accuracy and consistency. The 9000 Series creates smooth, consistent seed trenches using opener discs that have opposing double row bearings for durability and each of the discs shares the cutting duties equally. Then, the 9000 Series uses a positive air system to move the seed through the planter, instead of a vacuum or mechanical delivery system. This allows for seed to uniformly filter into the seed disc, which holds seed steadily in place with cells as they rotate through the seed meter, ensuring crops are planted a consistent distance apart. The positive-pressure system in the 9000 Series moves the seed without damaging the seed coating or drawing in dust or debris — preventing buildup and therefore skips and doubles. Once the seeds are ready to go into the ground, the 9000 Series edge-drop system ensures seeds drop as short a distance as possible for accurate seed placement. Seed tube clips hold the tube securely to the shank, preventing additional movement that could compromise results. The White Planters patented depth calibration system provides farmers with the confidence that the depth they have specified using the adjustment handle and indicator is accurate through the entire depth range. “PROFITS GROW WITH KNIGHTRO”

– Ken E. Knight

What Dreams Are Made Of, and Where They Come True The story of California Chrome has unfolded right before our very eyes, like that of a fairy tale or a fable of treasured memories! Not unlike that of the dreams that have come true as a result of our involvement in the county fair. Yours may have been a purple ribbon that opened new doors of opportunity or a latent talent that was burning a hole in your heart. Without that stage of opportunity to showcase your wares, you may have never become the person you are today. For many of us the county fair is the foundation of our very being. Uninhibited by the flare and glare of the forbidden stages reserved for the privileged few, your county fair welcomes you with unconditional open arms. Furthermore it supports you with family, friends, and neighbors that have been cheering you on ever since you can remember. It’s that kind of comfort level that propels you to higher levels of achievement. The county fair is all about 4-H, and 4-H is all about achievement, much like that of horse racing, where achievement is measured by who comes across the finish line first. That’s where California Chrome enters the picture. A horse of so much charm, beauty and speed is as unlikely as that of a county fair producing such a champion. And like that of most county fair achievements, the horse is of modest means and even less expectations. Such was my personal experience some sixty-plus years ago at the Burke county fair located at Flaxton, ND. There was this beautiful horse, almost the prototype of California Chrome — chestnut with four white socks and a blaze face. She was a stablemate to a string of racehorses that seemed to have shown up out of nowhere. These horses looked prettier and faster than the locals, and she stood out as being the most special of them all. Her name was Salome Straw. Not a name of significance, at least not to me. But her appearance set her apart from all the other horses. I told my Dad that someday I would like to have a horse like her, not thinking that anything would ever come of it. But as the fair came to a close it was apparent that this new stable of horses didn’t live up to their billing, as they hadn’t won enough to earn enough money to even get out of town. Being the horse trader that my Dad was, he was Johnny-On-The-Spot. He offered the owner of Salome Straw enough money to fund his exit trip out of town. Gas money wasn’t so much back then, so she was a real bargain.

Assuming that Dad was going to load her up and haul her back to the farm, I couldn’t wait to leave the fairgrounds, and get home to spend some time with my new horse. But it didn’t happen that way. He saddled her up, threw me up on her and said, “She’s yours, son–ride ‘er home.” Though it was only a couple of miles, it was the longest ride of my life, as she was fresh off the race track — with more get up and go than I could possibly handle. She fought me every step of the way, but I knew I couldn’t give up, exhausted or not. It was like my rite of passage to earn the rights to such a special horse. As we grew older and stronger together, we became a force to reckon with at our county fair and elsewhere. She was a real crowd-pleaser, liked to show-off and look like a winner, even if she didn’t always end-up in the winner’s circle. She was my lady, or at least everything I thought a lady should be—beautiful and performing at a high level. Thus she was known as 'lady' for all those years of enjoyment we shared together. It was much like that of California Chrome, except the playing field was entirely different. We never got far beyond the county fairgrounds, nothing comparable to that of the Kentucky Derby, or the big bucks, but in her own special way— for a 9-10 year old boy, she was bigger than life, the most coveted aspiration of the county fair. Nine grand champion steers and a bucket load of treasured memories couldn’t compare. But like that of California Chrome there were no grandiose expectations of greatness, for this was just local county fair kind of stuff. Both were cheap horses by racehorse standards. After all, how much can you expect from an $8,000.00 mare bred to an inexpensive stallion or a horse purchased for just 'gas money'. But both delivered; each in their own way. One a champion of champions and the other a dream come true for a lifetime of memories.

have youngsters learn about agriculture, forestry, conservation, and home economics, it soon became so much more.

Today 4-H is more about leadership and the positive development of individual lives. Though it was the intent of congress that youth would learn by participating in various activities, it soon evolved from that of just participation to that of winning and losing. 4-H was built on competitiveness, and it is the light of he or she who has the most stars that shines the brightest. It is on this very principle that 4-H can point with pride to an unending Parade of Champions. May 4-H continue to grow in the tradition for which it has lasted all these many years? The 4-H (head-heart-hands and health) remain to this day, to be the cornerstones of the greatest youth organization on the face of the earth. I speak from experience when I express the accolades of 4-H, as it is with the greatest sense of humility that I credit 4-H for any and all the successes I’ve enjoyed in life. Though I’ve experienced my share of failure it is the experiences of my 4-H days that gave me direction in life, became the foundation of my vocation, and taught me to always be competitive — to strive to be the best, without always being the winner. Though always being the winner seems to be the unimaginable direction of fate for California Chrome, it may never happen again under such similar circumstances. Winning the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness was a nationally achieved super achievement, but the Belmont proved to be too much. And it will be too much for any horse unless the playing field is of equal terms and conditions, otherwise the Triple Crown can be compared to a free for all at the county fair. But, remember, it’s not about the winning or losing. It’s all about the dreams, dreaming it could happen. Why else would you buy a cheap racehorse, be it California Chrome or Salome Straw. And why dream at all if there aren’t playing fields like county fairs, small enough to be inclusive of all who dare to dream. That’s what 4-H and county fairs have to offer. The best horse doesn’t always win.

Dreams do come true — more so at county fairs than any other place on the face of the earth. The magic of county fairs has come to be 4-H. It has become the heart and soul of most county fairs. Started in rural America in the early 1900’s as part of a drive by congress to

How to Get Barn-Quality Hay Without the Barn

Wrap your bales with John Deere B-Wrap*. It’s the alternative to indoor storage. B-Wrap works in your John Deere baler much like net wrap. Yet it protects bales almost like they were stored indoors — shedding rain, snow, and helping resist ground moisture. Storage losses are dramatically reduced, especially when compared to net wrap bales stored outdoors over winter. Learn more at AMBRACO.com, or visit your John Deere dealer.

Involved in farm estate planning for more than thirty years, Michael Baron is well-versed in farm income taxation, estate taxation, retirement planning, transition planning, oil and gas estate issues, and all other issues facing the family farm, including family dynamics. Presented in a comprehensive, down-to-earth 'question and answer" format, the topics addressed in this column talk about the many aspects of estate planning – and how to 'Keep the Family Farm in the Family'.

Why Use a Commercial Trustee? Dear Michael:

them to do – because they are bound by law to follow those instructions.

Reading your column posted on May 19, 2014 in the Country Lifestyle section at www.farmandlivestockdirectory.com titled I’m Gonna Make Him an Offer He Can’t Refuse, you stated a commercial trustee may be a better option for handling our land and mineral assets than having one of our children handle it. Why do you feel this way? ~ Trust My Family

Dear Trust My Family: I understand how many people feel about their families. But families are not a static unit as time goes by. People are added and subtracted – due to births, deaths, divorces, etc. If you have an asset of considerable value that you believe should be held onto – whether that's land, or minerals, or the right to income from either – regardless of any circumstances in the future – that the long-term value of the income will always offset any purchase price offered – then you need to lock it up somewhere where human emotion is taken out of the equation – this would be an irrevocable trust with a commercial trustee. Or, if you feel the value of the accumulated income or asset value may sometime put the person in charge of these funds or asset value may place them in a compromising situation in the future, then use someone who follows your instructions to the letter as to what you want to see happen. For example, many people have mineral trusts and these trusts merely hold the mineral and all of the income is disbursed from this trust. This protects the mineral value from inclusion for estate taxes upon your death (less any Unified Credit lost for gifting to the trust originally). It also provides a vessel to accumulate and distribute these funds. As long as you are alive, there is oversight and there is accountability in these trusts – in most cases. The rare case where this wouldn't be is if you experience some type of dementia or physical disability that limits you from being able to care whether or not there is oversight and accountability.

However, again, upon your death, the biggest complaint I hear from beneficiaries of trusts is, "I don't know what's happening with the trust. My (brother – sister) runs the trust and just sends checks out. I don't know what's coming in and I don't know what's going out and I don't know if everything is as it should be. I ask and ask, but they refuse to send out any information". Again, if you mandate that each beneficiary of your trust is to receive a statement (annual, quarterly, monthly) from your commercial trust, they will receive their statements – including any and all information you decide they disclose. This not only happens with the current beneficiaries, it happens with all subsequent beneficiaries. Your commercial trust is run by bank appointed trustees. If the trustee becomes injured, or retires, or dies, they have another person to step up and do the job you entrusted

What happens if they don't follow these instructions? For a personal trustee, beneficiaries are left to sue the trustee (their brother, sister, etc.) and hold them personally responsible for any losses to the trust. I've run across many situations where beneficiaries have come to me to see how they can recoup losses incurred by their sibling and when I tell them they'll have to personally sue them, best case scenario, or bring in the officials and they could be arrested and charged, many beneficiaries don't see this as a win situation. Most people tell me, "Well, the reason they mismanaged or took part of the money is they had money problems themselves. If I went after them in court, it'd be like getting blood out of a turnip. Why put him or her in jail over this when I'll never see a dime?" In the case of a commercial trustee, if the assets are mismanaged or mishandled, the bank is bonded against such occurrences and, yes, they will have the deep pockets between the bonding and their own net value to make up any losses. Hence the reason for the major oversight by the bank itself over it's own trust department. If you feel the assets will go to your children upon your death, then maybe the personal trustee is the way to go. If you want the asset and/or the income thereof to go on for two or more generations, then perhaps a hard look at commercial trusts is the way to go. For those people who say 'When I'm dead, it doesn't really matter' then maybe you don't need a trust at all.

Instead of Giving Up Clutter Clearing, “Just Keep Swimming” Summer can be hectic. Summer can run long and hot. In the Disney movie Finding Nemo there is a little fish named Dory with a short-term memory problem. Can anyone else out there relate? I don’t want to say how often I walk into a room and then forget why I am there! To stay calm and to keep going in spite of the forgetfulness that sometimes makes the world a very frightening place, Dory regularly chants, "Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming." Dory is absolutely right. When long summer days still don’t seem to offer enough time, I think of Dory and many of us who want to be more like her. Is your clutter weighing you down? Though it would be nice to be naturally slender, talented, or well organized, that isn't the real answer. The real solution to life's frustrations isn't a solution. It is a process and it requires only one thing--persistence. Dory is persistent. Persistence is an underrated but much needed quality these days.

God's purpose for us, then decisions become simplified, stress is reduced, and we can achieve greater focus in our lives.

I often seem to be working on body clutter, especially before and during swimsuit season. The first few pounds come off pretty easily, but then it becomes more and more difficult. In fact, there have been some weeks when I have gained weight rather than lost it. When that happens, I become frustrated which simply leads to more emotional eating (substitute consumption if you're thinking clutter here). When I haven't been successful, I just want to quit. Then it hits me, the point to getting rid of weight or clutter, isn't to "be the best," it is simply to just do it. "Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."

My ninety-nine-year-old grandpa phrased it another way, "It doesn't matter if you lose the battle; you want to win the war. In fact, you can lose every battle, and it doesn't matter, as long as you win the war." He was talking about this in the context of creating a long successful marriage, but I think it can apply to all relationships and virtually everything else in life, including dealing with household clutter, paper clutter or weight loss.

I won't be able to say I lost a lot of body clutter in record time this spring and summer. In fact, I am behind schedule and my original goal may not be realistic, but that isn't the point. To achieve success, I simply stick with it. I can work on being persistent. I can keep recommitting. The same thought applies to household clutter. We don't have to make our homes perfect in a weekend. Most of us probably couldn't do that anyway. What we can do is to recognize that clutter clearing is a process and that things will improve if we simply continue to stick with it when we can little by little. One book that helps me to stay on task in many areas of my life is Rick Warren's New York Times bestseller The Purpose Driven Life–What On Earth Am I Here For? (Zondervan, 2007). Warren's Christian book suggests that self-help can't always be found with navel gazing and internal analysis. He says since moods and emotions can fluctuate frequently, we would be wise not to base our long-term beliefs, decisions, and life behaviors on them. Rick Warren states that if we know 8 0 0 - 6 2 2 - 8 8 3 6 | The S O U T H E R N FAR M a n d LI V E STO C K DI R E CTO RY |

In spite of trying to practice voluntary simplicity and pursue a minimalist sort of life, I am great at getting distracted. The ideas in Warren’s book help me to remember to regularly ask myself if my thoughts, words, and deeds are matching my long-term priorities.

This approach allows for flexibility and moments when we stumble. It keeps us focused on the long-term goal while working away at our clutter in small bites. As I have said before, we can tackle our clutter in small amounts of time or work in small areas at a time. The trick is to slowly develop the muscle or willpower to keep going back to the task. Willpower to practice persistence is a skill we can all learn or improve. It is hard develop this in our rapidpaced instant-gratification society. When we can have answers in seconds by “googling it,” it is hard to develop stick-to-it qualities like stubbornness or persistence. It is worth the effort, whether tackling clutter or other life goals. It is okay to momentarily quit. It is realistic and so very human to have lapses. The point is that we can pick ourselves or our clutter back up again and continue. Don't quit when the piles re-appear on the kitchen counter or the table disappears under the paperwork. Keep whittling away at it and you will succeed!

FARM and RANCH LIFE By Dr. Michael R. Rosmann Dr. Michael R. Rosmann brings the perspective of a farmer in “Farm And Ranch Life”. Dr. Rosmann grew up on a mixed grain and livestock farm in Western Iowa where he experienced enjoyable hard work and 4-H, and witnessed the stresses that accompany farming and farm life. Dr. Rosmann developed the first mental health response in Iowa to the Farm Crisis of the 1980s. In 2001, Dr. Rosmann, along with partners in seven states, founded the nonprofit network, AgriWellness Inc. AgriWellness conducted research and provided counseling services to farm people. It became clearer that a specialized field – agricultural behavioral health – was needed to respond to the unique problems experienced by farmers, ranchers and others involved in agriculture.

Email Dr. Rosmann at mike@agriwellness.org, or visit his website at www.agbehavioralhealth.com. You can call him at his office in Harlan, Iowa at 712-235-6100.

Finding Counselors Who Understand Agriculture A common question “Farm and Ranch Life” readers ask me is who they can consult for assistance with personal, family and behavioral health problems. Finding behavioral health professionals who understand agriculture is difficult. There is no directory of agricultural behavioral health professionals. Ask your doctor or local mental health clinics for recommendations. Only six states have farmer-friendly telephone helplines and fewer have websites that are available to help agricultural and rural residents find the assistance they want: • Iowa Concern Hotline, 800-447-1985, www.extension.iastate.edu/iowaconcern • Nebraska Rural Response Hotline, 800-464-0258, www.interchurchministries.org/ruralresponse.html • New York FarmNet, 800-547-3276, www.newyorkfarmlink.org • South Dakota Rural Helpline, 800-664-1349, no website • Vermont Farm First, 877-493-6216, www.investeap.org; enter the password: dairy • Wisconsin Farm Center, 800-942-2474, no website Agriculture has two components: “agri” and “culture,” said the Leftenant Governor of Saskatchewan at a meeting I attended in Regina some years ago. She was the official representative of the British monarchy in the province, hence the term “Leftenant Governor,” and also a psychologist. In order to be effective in counseling farmers and ranchers,” she said, “counselours must understand the culture of people who raise food, and agricology (mainly a British term that refers to the study of agriculture), and the culture part is more important.” The concept stuck with me. It led me to suggest the need to train professionals in agricultural behavioral health, if they work with this population. The precise profession of the behavioral healthcare provider whom agricultural people select is less important than the provider’s credibility as someone who understands the lifestyle and travails experienced by agricultural producers. Characteristics of effective counselors include positive empathy for the client, along with genuineness and warmth, according to University of Calgary psychologists and researchers, Robert Carkhuff and Roger Truax. These are necessary, but insufficient characteristics. A12

Research now shows that a high psychological skill level and knowledge of the cultural background of the client are also critical. Counselors must be familiar with the way of life of the persons they serve in order to be effective. Farm and ranch people should ask potential providers if they understand agricultural issues and activities, because these matters are usually integrated into the problems for which they are seeking help. Is the provider’s profession important? It can be. They have different training, skills and approaches to giving care. Psychiatrists and other physicians such as family doctors and pediatricians, as well as advanced registered nurse practitioners (ARNPs) and physician assistants (PAs), are trained in medicine, but to different levels. All are usually licensed to prescribe medications, but in some states ARNPs and PAs must work under physician supervision. Psychiatrists are medical or osteopathic doctors who have completed a four-year residency in psychiatry beyond their MD or DO degree. ARNPs and PAs usually have completed a two year program leading to a master’s degree, but the terminal degree of nurse practitioners is moving toward a four-year Doctor of Nursing Practice. A medical approach to behavioral healthcare usually involves medications to restore maladjusted behavior to wellness, but verbal counseling to manage behavior is also recognized as important. Medical practitioners generally spend less time with patients than trained counselors spend with patients and they typically have less training in psychological and social assessment and behavior intervention techniques.

treat persons within their areas of training varies according to state licensing requirements. Usually pastoral counselors do not make mental health diagnoses and do not receive reimbursement from health insurers unless they are certified pastoral counselors who are licensed. Psychologists complete 4-6 years of graduate training and an internship that focus on the science and treatment of behavioral health issues. There are many areas of psychology, such as child, clinical, organizational and social psychology; a doctorate is the terminal degree. Licensed psychologists diagnose and treat behavioral disorders through assessment techniques that may include psychological testing and systematic observation; they are trained in psychotherapeutic techniques to help people change and manage their behaviors. A few states allow psychologists with training in pharmacology to prescribe psychotropic medications. The best counselors for farm people sometimes do not have a degree in a medical or behavioral health field but they are wise, caring and trustworthy persons who can offer good advice. They might be veterinarians, Extension personnel, neighbors or friends. Usually they have natural skills and have learned much from the school of hard knocks. But don’t be afraid to consult a professional for serious behavioral health concerns.

Another Tool in the Fine Art of Money Management

By Paula Vogelgesang Email: Pennywise at pennywise@gwtc.net.

Storing the ‘Stuff’, On the Cheap One thing folks discover once they begin to adopt a ‘thrifty’ lifestyle is that they tend to run out of storage space. Attending yard sales and stocking up on bargain kid clothes before school starts, finding brand new appliances (unopened, still in the box) for future wedding, birthday, anniversary or Christmas gifts. Or, perhaps you change your way of cooking and begin to stock up on some of the basic foods when they are on sale. In many homes, storage is a premium item. Luckily, I have roomy closets. But most of them just have a single shelf above a closet rod, so they’ve ’tweaked’ to make the space more efficient. A friend of mine, who claims to be “A total disaster with a hammer and a screwdriver” took it upon herself to add three shelves to the space above her daughter’s closet rod. She measured the space and then went to the local hardware store to get shelf brackets, screws and some boards cut exactly to fit the length of her space. She sanded and painted the boards before she put them up and color coded them for seasonal items like snow pants and mittens. After the shelves were installed, she and her 8 year old daughter proceeded to sort through all of the child’s clothing according to season and put the items in their proper places. Instead of buying plastic totes, she went to the grocery store

and asked for heavy cardboard boxes. She requested the lids be left on, instead of cut off with a box cutter. The store was happy to honor her request and she got enough boxes to fit on all the shelves. She had remember seeing some cardboard storage containers with wallpaper-like covering at a store. They made their own pretty boxes with some left over sticky-backed shelf liners, glued on some wrapping paper scraps and magazine pictures that her daughter had cut out. The boxes were then lined inside with plain newspapers and brown paper grocery bags to keep the dust away. After seeing an advertisement for a ‘double your space’ gadget made from some plastic chain and a clear plastic rod, she went to the hardware store and got some rings that fit over the closet rod (four of them) and some small chain (like for small dogs), another piece of closet rod cut about half the length of the closet and proceeded to ‘make her own ‘space saver’ gadget. I’m thinking hers will last a lot longer since it’s

made of those heavy rings and chains and the big closet rod. She hung it up and doubled the storage for her daughter’s clothing, and still has room for the shoes (in a rack purchased at a yard sale for a quarter). They also took a couple more of the bigger boxes, lined them with the brown paper grocery bags and used them to store her boots; cowboy boots for riding, mud boots for chore times, and some ‘fancy boots with heels’ for church! Do-it-yourself storage is a great idea. It’s a fun family project everyone can participate in, and save money at the same time! Do you have any creative do-it-yourself storage solutions to share? Email your ideas to: pennywise@gwtc.net. Until next month, Paula

Money & Time-Saving Tips from Pennywise:

How to Make a Drill 'Holster', Step Shelving and More Tips DRILL HOLSTER My friend has many hand and shop tools and is creative when it comes to storing them. To store his electric drill, he uses an empty dish-soap bottle (one of those large ones with a handle). He then flipped it upside down, cut off enough of the bottom so that his electric drill drops down inside and screwed it to a board in his shop. He cut a big notch out of the handle so his cord can wrap around it and keep it out of the way, and off of the floor. (idea submitted by BW, CA)

CANDLE STOCK UP TIME Fall we be just around the corner soon and many of the stores will try to get rid of their pretty pastel candles that are used both indoors and out during the warmer months. I buy as many as my budget can handle and stash them away in a closet for winter time. We live in a rural area with lots of trees and invariably, we get some kind of a storm that knocks out our electricity– sometimes for as long as two days. I don’t own any lamps (the old fashioned ones) and the candles can ‘get us by’ until the electricity is restored. AUG UST 2014

rubber eraser gives him enough grip to move the pieces about and he didn’t have to buy ‘yet another gadget’. (tip submitted by GE, KS)

More about stocking up... This hint about the candles got me to thinking that now may be a good time to start to build a ‘storm stash’ of non-perishable food items, extra blankets, pet food (for the critters in our lives), and other miscellaneous items. If you take medication, you might ask your doctor about an extra month’s supply, to be purchased in late fall and stored for those storm months when mail service or even travel to a pharmacy may be limited. Just a thought!

We figured it wouldn’t hurt and might even help, so he was given the go-ahead. He put dabs of the toothpaste on a dry cloth and rubbed away. The slight abrasive in the toothpaste put quite a shine on that dull finish, and the cost was next to nothing! (tip submitted by ES, MN)

My tall boards were 12 inches high and I nailed a board on the top for the main shelf and then put another board that was just a stitch smaller so it fits between the two bigger boards, about half-way down. I use the 6-inch shelf for my smaller containers of silver polish, etc. and then can fit the quart bottles of cleaners on the top board. Sure does make it handy for me because now I can actually see what I have at a quick glance. Essays From My Farmhouse Kitchen

By Renae B. Vander Schaaf

Why Washing Dishes is a Blessing After each meal in our home the Bible is read, and then everyone gets busy cleaning up the dishes. It doesn't take long before the dishwasher is full, I always say, "If no one wants to wash the remaining dishes, please allow me," and the response is always, "No one is standing in your way!"

W

hat they don't realize yet is washing dishes is truly a blessing. In my case, it means that Mrs. V. Heddy Ake has not come to visit that day. She won't tell me what the 'V' stands for, but I am sure it is 'vicious'.

Things can get out of whack in a hurry if we don't perform day-to-day chores. When the laundry doesn't get done, it's panic time when there are no clean towels or (gasp) underwear… We too often forget clean laundry is a blessing.

When one is healthy, cleaning the kitchen seems burdensome. But to an bedridden invalid, it would be a blessing to be able to wash dishes.

Life situations can change in the twinkle of an eye. Maybe that's why Sunday comes once a week, or the sun rises each morning, and sets each day, just as a reminder to thank God for the blessings he has bestowed upon us. What if we woke up tomorrow morning with only the blessings we had thanked God for yesterday?

Washing dishes also means I probably have the luxury of time. My day is not so filled with other tasks or places to go that I can spend the time it takes to wash dishes. When there are lots of dirty dishes, it meant everyone was home for dinner. (What is not to like about spending time with your family?) And because we were able to prepare a meal and sit down and eat it indicates there were no major calamities facing us at that time. We have known days of serious affliction, and know assuredly, that someday trouble will assail us again. But for this day our world has a steadiness to it. Alice Morse Earle penned these words: "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift, that's why it's called the present." Those are good words to remember. Cooking and cleaning are routine responsibilities, often thought of as mundane. We might dream of the great things we could do if we weren't spending our time with a mop bucket and cleaning rags. (But isn't the most important work we do is taking care of our family?)
