Atlas Copco Hydro Magnet Picks Profit From Demolition Waste Hydro Magnets quickly and easily separate valuable iron and steel from concrete waste for subsequent recycling. The Hydro Magnet can be simply installed on a carrier with an existing uni-directional auxiliary circuit with a signal line to power and control the magnet, so there is no need for a generator or electric cables from the carrier. Hydro Magnets are available in two versions, as a fixed magnet (F) or a mobile (M), where the magnet is attached by the use of a chain. Load capacities range from 617 lb. up to 16,535 lb. In the Hydro Magnet, hydraulic power provides flow and pressure by means of a sophisticated flow divider to an onboard hydraulically driven generator. Highly activated voltage rapidly reaches the magnetic strength to attract a large amount of ferrous material and hold it firmly in place. A rapid alternation of the polarity accelerates demagnetization, resulting in fast material drop and a magnet plate free from even small pieces of steel. The optimized power/weight ratio and intelligent interaction between all integrated components in the attachment offers optimal handling performance. The overall result is a faster collection and loading process.

All key components of the Hydro Magnet are integrated into a compact design, and the magnet plate is made to handle harsh environments. A hermetically sealed steel case protects the magnet coil against mechanical and enviromental effects, and an external Hardox steel ring protects against wear. The large steel surface compensates for temperature increases. A multi-functional diagnostic panel in a waterproofed body indicates current working status and potential faults for troubleshooting. No special maintenance is needed apart from periodic inspections of the mounting hardware and eletrical cable connections between the generator body and the magnet plate. Using Hydro Magnets to collect ferrous material remaining in the demolition pile not only means more profit but also reduces the risk of damage to crushers, conveyor belts and other jobsite equipment. Philippi-Hagenbuch Introduces Revolutionary Rolling Wedge Cutter For Outstanding Efficiency, Reduced Cutting Dust Philippi-Hagenbuch (PHIL) has introduced its newest patent-pending invention from LeRoy Hagenbuch, P.E, the Rolling Wedge™ Cutter. The Rolling Wedge Cutter offers an innovative material-cutting approach that could dramatically improve material trenching and mining processes while improving cut size and reducing cutting (coal) dust by as much as 50 percent. The Rolling Wedge Cutter is a solution for trenching and mining through challenging environments for general construction, road construction, mining and utility applications. It can be used in aboveground and underground environments, and can create time efficiencies and accomplish techniques that were previously thought very difficult, and in some cases, unachievable.

The ROUGHNECK R500’s heavy-duty housing permits directional drilling in varying rock conditions without changing out the housing. The larger bore diameter of the housing allows the ROUGHNECK hammer to send more air to the internal piston for maximum efficiency, resulting in faster and harder blows. Standard API thread makes housing connections easy. The patented offset rock bit design provides precise steering, allowing the operator to navigate a wide variety of ground conditions. Integrated face-cleaning exhaust ports help prevent plugging of the hammer for reliable performance, and the patented check valve located within the bit eliminates ingestion of debris.

The powerful rotator is hard-wearing and built stronger with several extra gussets, and features 110 degree rotation for greater maneuverability and clipping at various angles. The mount is also more robust featuring two extra stabilizer bars for a total of five, rendering

patented spanner wrench holes in the front and rear of the hammer, reducing the number of breakout tongs required to change out the bit or service the tool.

The control station utilizes the drill’s existing mud pump to efficiently deliver air, oil and fluids down hole, reducing footprint size and weight. Integrated electronics facilitate the drilling operation and provide the operator with control and increased productivity without leaving the drill operator’s station. All ROUGHNECK control stations can be installed with a tee and a ball valve on the high pressure side of the mud pump, which directs airflow to the drilling fluid supply line. Like all HammerHead products, ease-of-maintenance is built in. The ROUGHNECK system is equipped with

The greatest benefit of using the Rolling Wedge Cutter is that 60-70 percent less energy is required to roll material out in tension than the sheer, brute force required to take materials past their compressive strength. Instead of blasting material apart by exceeding its compressive strength through brute force, which has been the traditional method, the Rolling Wedge Cutter places material in tension and pulls it apart by overcoming the material’s tensile strength. When put in tension, material such as concrete has just one-fifth the tensile strength of its compressive strength. Because of that, the Rolling Wedge Cutter curtails the challenges associated with trenching and mining through difficult materials such as concrete, concrete with rebar, frozen ground and pavement. nwhat’s new less disruption to the ground underneath streets and roadways than backhoes and jackhammers forcing their way through pavement. It eliminates the need to wait for the ground to thaw by allowing users to trench or cut through materials without jackhammers, saws or other cutting devices. And users who want to break up a chunk of concrete can just drill a small hole and drive in a Rolling Wedge Cutter.

Bayley Construction Brings the Cloud to the Construction Site with Innovative OnSite Wi-Fi Technology from OpenRoute Bayley Construction is the First to Deploy Private Broadband Wireless Network from OpenRoute, Establishing a LEAN Construction Environment. OpenRoute, a leading innovator in wireless networks for the construction industry, recently announced the first commercial sale of its OpenRoute™ OnSite Wi-Fi technology to Bayley Construction in Seattle. Using the private broadband wireless network from OpenRoute, Bayley Construction is able to apply LEAN construction processes – where the immediate access to rich data on the job-site is paramount – even in locations where traditional Wi-Fi and cellular networks are not available. An OnSite Wi-Fi network is easily established by arranging several briefcase-sized boxes – distinctly yellow and equipped with an enclosed antenna – at strategic points around the job-site. The network is arranged and deployed using the OpenRoute™ NetMeter app, which is compatible with most Android devices. NetMeter monitors network performance in

real-time and supports users in positioning the OnSite Wi-Fi access point for optimum coverage. The NetMeter app also assists when access points need to be moved or repositioned as the job-site develops. “This technology is a breakthrough for our operation as it allows us to provide current drawings, details, and design team communications right to the worker in the field,” said Ron Bayley, CEO of Bayley Construction. “Cellular networks aren’t always available at our job-sites and current Wi-Fi equipment is expensive to set-up or not built to withstand the environment. OpenRoute’s OnSite Wi-Fi allows us to establish networking capabilities in even the most challenging environments at maximum efficiency – as if we were back at the office.”

Prime Tech's PT-175 Makes Mulching and Rock Crushing Easier With the North American launch of the PT-175, Prime Tech, a division of FAE, offers greater flexibility to its customers. The company is known for its line of forestry mulchers, forestry tillers, rock crushers and road construction heads. The multi-faceted nature of the PT-175 allows construction crews to perform multiple tasks with just one machine. This flexibility makes it an important tool for construction professionals in many industries.

“The network hardware is designed to be rugged and reliable – but through our initial pilots we learned the importance of keeping deployment simple and highly flexible,” said John Stachowiak, CEO of OpenRoute. “Through the NetMeter app, the network is essentially self-deployed and can be quickly adjusted as a building is erected, or as a job-site expands.” "Establishing a reliable Wi-Fi network can be a struggle even in urban locations – where we’re often working underground or in basements,” Bayley said. “We simply can’t afford to be bottlenecked by our access to data. OpenRoute’s technology enables us to establish a LEAN Construction environment where daily communications are highly efficient and reliable." nwhat’s new Talbert Introduces New E3Nitro Nitrogen-Assisted Dampening System Complements Full E-Nitro Line. Talbert Manufacturing introduces its new E3Nitro. The innovative nitrogen-assisted equalizing system provides the versatility haulers with East Coast trailers need to run in 3+1, 3+2 or 3+3 spread-axle configurations. The new E3Nitro is part of a larger series that also includes the E2Nitro and E1Nitro, with three, two or one pin-on axle(s), respectively. An ENitro system, with its nitrogen accumulator, oscillates around a central selftracking pivot points to provide proportionate weight distribution in each axle grouping.

The flexibility of the E-Nitro spreader makes it a valuable asset in all terrain applications. It provides haulers the flexibility to travel into states that require the fourth axle to be at least 14 feet, 1 inch from the third. With an ENitro system, they can obtain permits for any of these configurations and travel legally in 47 states (continental U.S. minus California). Both the E1Nitro and E2Nitro are built with two cylinders, and the E3Nitro has three. The extra cylinder is built to handle more capacity for heavy loads. In addition, the E3Nitro provides the ability to disconnect cylinders for capacity alterations. This makes running in 3+1 or 3+2 configurations possible because one cylinder can be removed. Because the E3Nitro is modular, the spreader can be removed and the trailer can operate as a four-axle in addition to the 3+1, 3+2 and 3+3 configurations. This is a distinct advantage of the E3Nitro over competitive products.

New EDGE® Sod Unroller Attachment CEAttachments, Inc. announces a new re-designed EDGE Sod Unroller attachment for skid steers and track loaders. The new EDGE Sod Unroller attachment has an enhanced, more cost-effective design that provides for more efficient operation and performance, saving time and money in labor. The new EDGE Sod Unroller features an improved bracket design, providing easier roll installation and more effective operation.

The series also incorporates two-speed dual landing gear for greater stability when the E-Nitro is disconnected from the trailer. For increased mobility on the jobsite, the E-Nitro system uses nitrogen to transfer weight off the rear axles so they can be lifted out of the way for easy backing. Since no shimming is required, users save considerable operational time and can travel empty without removing the booster and attachment. E-Nitro is a new name for nitrogen-assisted systems that Talbert previously called The Equalizer series. The company introduced its single-axle version in 2010 and shortly thereafter began manufacturing a tandem-axle model, as well. With the E-Nitro series, Talbert is able to build trailers with capacities well beyond what can be achieved with simple mechanical or rigid axle extensions. Historically, East Coast trailers had been limited to capacities below their potential because of axle-weight restrictions and permitting issues. But by incorporating the new Talbert E3Nitro axle extension, haulers can scale their trailers appropriately and use them to their full potential. The E3Nitro is designed for trailers with capacities of up to 85 tons and can carry 74,100 pounds (24,700 pounds per axle) in its 3+3 configuration. An E2Nitro, which is designed for trailers with up to 65-ton capacities, can support 49,400 pounds (24,700 pounds per axle) in a 3+2 formation. Finally, the E1Nitro is designed for trailers with up to 55-ton capacities and can carry 24,700 pounds (24,700 per axle) in its 3+1 configuration. Unlike conventional, rigid East Coast spreaders that only provide self-tracking articulation left and right, the E-Nitro Series also provides articulation up and down. This gives drivers a much safer and stable alternative than the East Coast spreaders of the past. By using a nitrogen accumulator, Talbert’s E-Nitro system hydraulically sets axle load capacity and keeps it there as the system equalizes up and down articulation. This provides a much safer and more stable platform that virtually eliminates “bridging” of the spreader, which is a situation in which entire load rides on the rearmost axle.

n equipment spotlight Reduce Costs when Pouring Curbs and Gutters When it was introduced in 2008 at the World of Concrete show, the Curbroller walked away with MIP status, and for good reason. Prior to its introduction to the market, contractors had three main ways to roll concrete curbs, either completely by hand, using face forms or using a large, expensive machine. None of these options are budget friendly, and they require a significant amount of labor. Curbroller changed all of that. Curbroller is easy to operate and helps your work force get more done in less time. It requires no extensive training or operating experience. It also eliminates the need to purchase, load, clean and maintain face forms. When asked about these benefits, a Curbroller spokesperson said, "The easy-to-use design is what makes Curbroller such an innovative tool in the construction industry. For the average crew, it will double output." Sometimes products that increase productivity decrease quality, but not the Curbroller. The finished curbs produced by the Curbroller are at or above the quality level of those created with other methods. For the construction firm that has been subcontracting curb work, the Curbroller eliminates that need. It makes it possible for the average crew to handle the job of laying curbs, without specialized equipment or training. This increases the bottom line on every job, every time.

Be the Envy of the Lake with a Remote Opening Schweiss Hydraulic or Bifold Door Wind, waves or weather–if youʼre living near the waterʼs edge and going through the hassle of tying down your floatplane, seaplane or watercraft to a dock or shore in windy waters or rainy, cold weather, Schweiss Doors has the perfect solution for you. Schweiss Doors has built several floatplane hangar doors, boathouse and marina doors that have made pilots and boat owners across the United States and abroad the envy of the lake. Whether you prefer a one-piece hydraulic door or a bifold lift strap door, both options work well. If your hangar is at the waterʼs edge, these Schweiss doors can be installed year round. Installing a boathouse door is a little more complicated than doing one on dry land, but Schweiss Doors personnel have the experience and know-how to have it done or guide you on the installation process whether it be in the summer or winter. If you have a new or existing boathouse or hangar, Schweiss Doors can also give you all the dimensions prior to installing a Schweiss door so that the opening can be made to the exact size and specifications so the door can be put on in a matter of a few hours or more. Schweiss hydraulic and bifold liftstrap/autolatch custom made doors are also made to accept a number of different exterior claddings from lightweight aluminum siding to heavy wood planking. Heavy-duty hydraulic pumps and cylinders with top quality top or bottom mount motors and bifold door liftstraps and autolatches can easily lift and tightly secure any size door you might need. Remote door openers are available to make dry docking your air or watercraft even easier. Most floatplane and seaplane pilots build a rail system into their hangar to pull their planes in and another option is to build your hangar large enough to park your boat right next to your plane. Marinas throughout the U.S.A. and abroad have also found that Schweiss doors are ideal for their off-season storage facilities and the doors can be wind rated to withstand hurricane-force winds. Airtow Trailers Announces Expansion With Ohio Location Airtow Trailers has proudly served a loyal customer base from their Southern California manufacturing facility. In order to serve a broader customer base, a brand new Ohio location has been established. “We recognized that we were missing out on a huge market of hard-working people that needed the superior quality of Airtow’s hydraulic-lift trailer, but couldn’t justify tacking on the additional freight costs to have it shipped from the West coast,” stated a company spokesperson. At present, the new Ohio location is a distribution warehouse setup as a ship out point to midwest, southern and east coast based customers. In some cases, this will substantially reduce turnaround time for order processing and in most cases, significantly reduce freight costs. The new Ohio location will also serve as a "freight free" pickup location. Future plans the company has for the new location include manufacturing of trailers. Air-tow Trailer is the world’s only ground-level loading trailer with full air suspension. For more information visit www.airtow.com. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Pacer Pumps Made from Thermoplastics Withstand Corrosive Chemicals Pacer Pumps offers lightweight, portable thermoplastic transfer pumps for use with chemicals, salt water, fresh water and fertilizer applications. The thermoplastic material makes these pumps more durable than others on the market, because it holds up well under corrosive materials. Pacer originated the high performance centrifugal pumps molded from thermoplastics, and they are known across the industry as one of the leading manufacturers of these pumps. Today's agricultural companies know they can trust Pacer Pumps to provide high-quality, long-lasting pumps that will stand up for years of use. Pacer Pumps designed these pumps specifically for their durability. When asked about this, a company spokesperson said, "The chemicals commonly used in construction and agriculture are quite corrosive to metal pumps. This creates a growing need for repairs and even replacement. Thermoplastics, which is what are used for Pacer Pumps, eliminate this risk by limiting the amount of corrosion that occurs in these corrosive applications." Pacer Pumps offers many different choices for their pumps, including different seal materials and thermoplastics, so today's contractors can choose the Continued on next page [continued on next page]

ground cut of the tree, which means the stump does not create a hazard. Ad in a chemical spray system, which is optional, and today's construction professionals can eliminate the risk of re-growth on trees they no longer want. The Hydra-Clip features three-inch solid steel heat treated jaws, one-inch high abrasive steel blades and extended tip blades for large cuts. Sometimes the full power of the Hydra-Clip is not necessary, and the Hydra-Snip may be a better fit. Weighing just 800 pound, the Hydra-Clip can cut a 12foot tree in a single pass. Larger trees can be handled with multiple cuts. The system's engineering gives it more cutting power and faster speeds than any other sheer, even with its low weight. Of course once the trees are down, something needs to be done with them, and the MoreThanAWoodSplitter offers an option. This new design from M&M Engineered Products processes firewood and includes a maintenance-free trimmer.

Tree Removal Made Simple with M&M Engineered Products

The new Brokk 400 weighs 11,240 pounds and is 63 inches wide and nearly 81 inches tall. While it’s slightly larger than its predecessor it’s still compact enough for work in small spaces. It also is powered by a 30 kW electric motor for emissions-free operation in confined areas.

M&M Engineered Products also carries an extensive line of grapple rakes, allowing construction professionals and land owners to remove large amounts of debris easily. All attachments have standard skid steer mounts and can be fully adapted to front-end loaders as needed.

Redesigned Brokk 400 Remote-Controlled Demolition Machine Provides More Stability, Greater Efficiency Brokk, Inc. has upgraded its electric Brokk 400 remotecontrolled demolition machine to include a larger undercarriage for heavy-tracking applications like tunneling and mining and for enhanced stability when operating with heavier attachments like metal shears and scabblers. Brokk also has improved the hydraulic system; it now provides more efficient fluid flow when the machine is operating a drill attachment so there is more consistent power. With its new upgrades the Brokk 400 also delivers exceptional performance on a variety of construction, demolition and specialty applications. The new 400 model machine features a bigger drive axis, rollers and sidetracks. It also has a larger undercarriage with new tracks that are 10 percent longer than its predecessor. This improves wear life for machines used in applications that require a lot of tracking and provides up to 60 percent greater stability when operating with heavier attachments. In addition, the machine’s outriggers provide a wide base that evenly distributes weight and provides even more stability. Its high chassis setup and heavy-duty rubber tracks make it easy to maneuver over rubble piles and obstacles.

When paired with Atlas Copco’s SB 552 hammer, the Brokk 400 has a hitting power of 773 foot-pounds at the tip of the tool, which makes it ideal for rock excavation in small tunnels, scaling or secondary breaking.

The machine features a robust, three-part boom that can operate at angles of up to 30 degrees and reach 22 feet horizontally and 24 feet vertically. The remote-controlled boom allows operators standing a safe distance away to reach into areas that traditional machines or users with handheld equipment cannot. The boom also features a box-weld design that provides additional protection for cylinders and hoses. In addition to the 400, Brokk offers seven models in a variety of sizes and with a range of capacities. The smallest, the Brokk 60, weighs just 1,100 pounds, and the largest, the Brokk 800, weighs 24,350 pounds. The company also engineers and builds custom machines with special equipment such as cameras, extended arms, side-angling devices and cable drums. n equipment spotlight Odyne Systems Named a 2014 Eureka Innovation Award Winner by the Milwaukee Business Journal Company’s Unique Plug-In Hybrid System for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Trucks Lauded for Design Excellence. Odyne Systems, LLC has been named a 2014 Eureka Innovation Award winner in the second annual Eureka Awards program sponsored by the Milwaukee Business Journal, one of 40 Business Journals throughout the U.S. operated by BizJournals, a Division of American City Business Journals. Odyne’s advanced plug-in hybrid electric truck systems can reduce fuel consumption by up to 50% or greater depending upon the duty cycle, lower emissions and allow large work vehicles to operate quietly at a work site, powering all attachments and tools and providing heat and air conditioning to the cab. The company holds 6 U.S. and 3 International patents and has 21 patents pending. Odyne’s proprietary hybrid technology combines reliable electric power conversion, power control and energy storage technology. The system interfaces with Allison Transmission’s industry leading fully-automatic transmissions, Remy advanced electric propulsion motors with industry leading power density and efficiency, Johnson Controls lithium-ion battery technology and other robust, automotive quality components. The company is currently installing over 120 systems on new trucks throughout North America as part of a $45.4 million award from the Department of Energy, which is being administered by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). Odyne is tapping Inland Power Group of Butler Wisconsin, an Allison Transmission distributor, as its manufacturing and installation partner. Joe Dalum, President and CEO of Odyne Systems, LLC noted, “We are excited to be named a Business Journal Eureka Innovation Award winner. Odyne has a unique hybrid system for medium- and heavy-duty trucks - the only plugin hybrid system that interfaces with an Allison transmission and provides fuel reduction benefits both during drive time and at the work site. We are pleased to be working with Johnson Controls, another Milwaukee area company, for the battery systems and with Inland Power Group, an Allison Transmission distributor located in Butler, Wisconsin for manufacturing and installation. Together we’ve brought over a dozen new jobs to Southeastern Wisconsin in late 2013 and 2014. We have a passion for innovation and delivery of reliable, advanced hybrid system solutions. This award is great recognition that Odyne’s technology plays an important role providing alternative energy to hard working trucks.”

Lower Maintenance Costs and Downtime with Evans Waterless Coolant One of the problems with modern engine coolant is the water content, which allows it to boil too easily. Evans Waterless Heavy Duty Coolant fixes this problem. With no water content, it provides a large separation between the operating temperature of the engine and the coolant's high boiling point. Evans Waterless Heavy Duty Coolant has a boiling point of an incredible 375 degrees Fahrenheit. This means that machines and vehicles can be used at a much higher temperature while the coolant continues to protect the engine. In addition, Evans Waterless Heavy Duty Coolant does not create hotspots or water vapor. This means that there is no unwanted pressure in the engine. Ultimately, this limits downtime, even in hot environments. This also limits the need to stop work and clean the radiator to prevent problems from overboiling with water-based coolants. The radiator can simply be cleaned at the end of the work day, helping productivity to increase. Finally, Evans coolant offers protection from cavitation erosion, corrosion and electrolysis, all of which are risks from water-based coolants. The coolant can be used for the life of the engine and will never need to be flushed and replaced. This means it lowers the cost of routine maintenance for the machine or vehicle. Evans Waterless Heavy Duty Coolant now has a new product label. The benefits continue even though the produce has a new, improved look. To learn more visit www.evanscooling.com or call 888-990-2665.

Hydroswing Breaks the Size Barrier Until now, a wall was a wall… enter Europe’s largest single panel hydraulic door. This gigantic manufacturing masterpiece is creating a revolution in terms of construction possibilities. Now walls up to 150’ wide and 40’ tall can be converted into useful and cost effective hydraulic doors. With almost 100% seal-ability, this conversion will forever change the face of commercial and industrial structures around the world. Hydroswing® has broken the size barrier and is charging into the large commercial door and industrial door market. In December of 2013, the oil platform manufacturer, Heerema, needed something unique – a 115’x 20’ hydraulic door for their Hartlepool facility in the north of England. “They knew Hydroswing® had the technology to design something of this magnitude, so naturally we got the call,” comments Alan Clark, International Sales Director for Hydroswing®. “We are very excited to have built this. We have always identified industrial and commercial usage as core sectors of our market and now that we have done this, we see the opportunity to change the way buildings deliver efficiency to their users.” (The door was manufactured in Preston, England at an ISO9001 facility.) Before the option of this door, openings were restricted. Structures with needs this wide had to rely on steel rolling doors or sectional applications. The option of a single panel hydraulic door changed everything. The massive opening capacity, teamed with expanded vertical clearance and an almost air-tight seal, essentially creates a movable wall. In turn, the enhanced building efficiency (EBE™) reduces both costs across the board. Hydroswing® was also called to task to provide a solution for Airbus in England. They were looking for a specific product for the Main Wing paint booth for their A380 Super Jumbo and wanted something that would be seated well enough to the floor that it would have the efficiency of a wall but the capabilities of door. We were able to manufacture a 57’ x 28’ door that immediately matched their needs and retro fit their existing Durr Paint Booth in only five days. The seal-abilty of the door was so tight their reduction in electricity on extraction fan speed alone generated a return on investment (ROI) in six months. Hydroswing® is overcoming space and size hurdles in the commercial and industrial sectors at a rapid pace. New projects in the works include a “door within a door” allowing for a smaller single panel installation within the confines of a 150’ main door allowing a wide array of multi-use possibilities. Hydroswing® is single handedly changing the way people use doors in commercial and industrial settings. Our ability to design and create solutions for large industrial doors and large commercial doors will leave a lasting impact on productivity, efficiency and cost effectiveness. Five Unrealistic Expectations We Have of Our “Smart”phones and Other Devices (and How to Get Back to Reality) Our smartphones, tablets, and other devices are technological marvels, but unfortunately, they’ve diverted our attention away from what people can accomplish in conversations. Geoffrey Tumlin shares five unrealistic expectations we have for how our digital devices boost communication and provides advice to help us improve our communication with each other. Advertisements promise that the latest smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other gadgets will put blazing speed at our fingertips, enable us to multitask like an octopus, and ensure that we never miss a thing. Because new technology promises—and does—a lot for us, it’s no surprise that we’ve fallen in love with it. But in our enthusiasm for our new digital communication tools, we’ve lost sight of the people behind the tools. It’s time to turn that around. And to do so, Geoffrey Tumlin offers an important reality check. He says our devices are great, but they can’t do quite as much as we think they can. And in fact, when it comes to communication, people can do much better. “A tech-centered view of communication encourages us to expect too much from our devices and too little from each other,” says Tumlin, author of the new book Stop Talking, Start Communicating: Counterintuitive Secrets to Success in Business and in Life (McGraw-Hill, August 2013, ISBN: 978-0-0718130-4-4, $20.00, www. tumlin.com). “Until we restore a more people-centered approach, we will continue to feel unsatisfied and largely unfulfilled by our interactions—despite having the most powerful connection and transmission devices in human history in the palms of our hands. “In truth, because of the incredible opportunities our devices offer for connecting with others, today really could begin a golden age of communication,” Tumlin asserts. “But that will happen only if we stop romanticizing the technology and start improving our communication. We need to lower our hopes for our ‘smart’ devices and raise our expectations of each other.” That’s where Stop Talking, Start Communicating comes in. Full of counterintuitive yet concrete advice, it draws on Tumlin’s research background and experience as a communication consultant to show readers how to develop productive communication habits, to improve conversations, and to use our powerful digital devices to bring us closer to our higher-order aspirations. Here, Tumlin shares five unrealistic expectations that have emerged during the long honeymoon of the digital communication revolution and outlines what we need to do to correct them: A12

800-622-8836 | The

Unrealistic expectation #1:

Our new devices have made communication easier. Just because our new devices enable us to reach out and touch someone with a few simple clicks, that doesn’t mean that communication itself has gotten any easier. “We are caught up in the excitement of the digital revolution,” asserts Tumlin. “We’ve been lulled into believing that communication is becoming easier because technological advances make it easier to send and receive messages. But because our interactions involve quirky, emotional, and sometimes unpredictable people, we can’t eliminate imperfections from communication. Communication is fundamentally imperfect, and no matter how fancy our devices may become, they’ll never be able to eliminate the misunderstandings, the confusion, and the errors that occur when people talk. “Some communication is just plain hard,” he adds. “Like, when we have to communicate bad news, tackle a sensitive topic, or have a conversation to address a difficult problem. So yes, it’s easier to send and receive messages today, but it’s important to remember that communication is as hard, and may be even harder, than it ever was.”

Unrealistic expectation #2:

We successfully communicate each time we hit the “Send” button. Our devices have greatly simplified the sending and receiving of messages, but there’s more to communication than that. Communication doesn’t occur until the other person understands our message, and that’s become the missing link in far too many conversations. “If you think about how we communicate today,” says Tumlin, “you’ll realize that we approach the majority of our exchanges with expediency in mind. We want to plow through our inboxes, respond to new text or voice messages as soon as they come in, and get face-to-face conversations over quickly so we can move on to the next thing. The communication tasks that pile up every day make it awfully tempting to fire off quick messages or speak abruptly and think that our work is done.

Contractors Equipment Directory

“But adding an extra step—considering whether or not your message is understood—can make you a much more effective communicator,” he adds. “The glut of messages we process on any given day encourages us to think of communication as something we do mechanically, when, in fact, communication is how we make our life. Smart communicators slow down when forming a message and consider whether or not the other person is likely to understand what they’re communicating. Without understanding, there’s no communication.”

Unrealistic expectation #3:

Better communication technologies mean better communication. Better communication technology doesn’t lead to better communication, especially when the new tools encourage speed and convenience over thoughtfulness and deliberation, and when they fragment our communication, scatter our attention, and constantly distract us from the issues at hand. “It’s ironic that tools designed to improve communication have all too often degraded it instead,” says Tumlin. “My smartphone distracts me ten times more often than any ‘dumb’ phone ever did, and I got a lot more work done when the mail came only once a day. Our daily challenge is to channel the power of our communication devices without being buried by it. “Our technical capabilities have raced ahead of our actual abilities,” he notes. “Smarter phones don’t guarantee smarter communicators. Better communication happens only when our communication skills improve.”

Unrealistic expectation #4:

What I want to say is the most important part of communication. With the promise of instant communication whenever we want it and however we want it, self-expression seems to be the king of the Internet age. But meaningful and effective communication is possible only when we consistently place our conversational goals ahead of our conversational impulses. “What separates average communicators from great ones is that the very best communicators don’t let what they want to say trump what they want to accomplish,” says Tumlin. “The hardest thing in the world is to not say the witty comeback on the tip of our tongues and to restrain ourselves from saying something obviously counterproductive—but immediately gratifying—when a conversation frustrates us. “Technology has encouraged communication on our terms and led to an explosion of self-expressive, me-first messages. These same messages, unfortunately, are also

the ones that torpedo our conversational goals. What you want to say is never more important than what you want to accomplish. That’s a lesson that smart communicators never forget.”

Unrealistic expectation #5:

Communicating to an audience doesn’t require any special consideration. One of the greatest deceptions of the digital age is that sending a message to dozens of people is just as easy as sending a message to one person. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Having a conversation with your boss is different from addressing the entire crew. A discussion with one friend is different from a discussion with 100 friends. But because all we have to do is click to send an email or text to our contacts we’ve concluded, incorrectly, that adding people to a message doesn’t require any additional thought or consideration. “The problem with this thinking,” says Tumlin, “is that communication gets much more difficult as you increase the number of people. More people means more perspectives to consider. When we fail to account for these additional viewpoints, we run the risk of talking, texting, or typing right past each other, or worse, upsetting someone with a thoughtless message or a hasty reply. “It’s not practical to think through every possible perspective before sending a group email,” he adds. “But we should take the extra step to consider key viewpoints and ask questions like ‘What’s George going to think about this question?’ or ‘I wonder how this email is going to come across to the accounting department?’ Adding people complicates communication, and when we forget that lesson, conversational trouble is never far behind.” “The digital communication revolution has encouraged us to expect way too much from our digital devices and far too little from each other,” says Tumlin. “Our devices can’t handle anywhere near the amount of interpersonal nuance and complexity that human interaction entails. Consciously or not, we’ve quickly downshifted our expectations for our interpersonal conversations and focused too much on our devices. But the good news is that if we recalibrate our expectations, we’ll be in a much better position to take advantage of the unprecedented opportunities for meaningful connection during the digital age. “We’ve never had so many ways to reach out and connect with each other,” he concludes. “If we put people back at the center of our conversations, this really could be the golden age of communication.” About the Author: Geoffrey Tumlin is the author of Stop Talking, Start Communicating: Counterintuitive Secrets to Success in Business and in Life. Innovation Is a Key to Competing on Value by TED GARRISON Innovation is one of the 10 principles of Construction 3.0 Strategies™ because it’s critical to the success of any contractor. It’s also an integral part of the key practices that are improving the construction industry—namely, Blue Ocean Contracting, integrated project delivery, and LEAN construction. The fourth, value-based contracting is about identifying people that have an open mind to innovation through continuous improvement. But why is innovation so important? In today’s hypercompetitive marketplace, contractors can consistently differentiate themselves from their competitors only through continuous innovation designed to deliver superior value to their clients. As Tom Peters said, “Tomorrow’s victories will go to the masters of innovation! Period!” If companies want to increase their innovation, they need to avoid thinking of innovation as an event. When companies or individuals think of innovation as an event, they tend to focus on large, gamechanging ideas to justify the attention and cost of the effort. While large innovations can have a great impact, unless they are constantly updated, they tend to lose their effect over time. Then one day the original innovator discovers he has been overshadowed by a competitor with newer and better ideas. A better solution is to develop a system that produces continuous improvement or innovation, often referred to as kaizen. If you think small improvements are not worth the effort, think again. If you can save just 30 seconds a day and compound that every day, in less than three years, you would double your productivity. In reality, most organizations would be better off focusing on small innovations instead of looking for major changes. Another advantage of small, continuous improvements is they are typically inexpensive and relatively easy to implement. Even if the innovation does not work out, the cost of attempting the change is negligible. In contrast, attempting to implement major innovations can be costly and time consuming, and often the resistance to such major change can destroy the potential of the innovation. Further, when the emphasis is on small enhancements, the number and quality of suggestions improves because everyone can participate in the process. Alan G. Robinson and Sam Stern reveal some interesting facts about innovation in their book, Corporate Creativity. First, their research found that awardwinning innovations are more likely to come from non-management personnel. They also found that ideas that came from non-management personnel had a greater impact than the ideas from the management. Talent is often wasted as companies tend to not use it to its fullest potential. Companies often defend that position by reporting that their people are not engaged or willing to take initiative. Unfortunately this a case of the chicken and the egg. Since the company does not respect the worker’s potential, the worker does not show his potential. However, when

www.contractorsequipmentdirectory.com | The

Contractors Equipment Directory

the workforce is engaged, amazing results can occur, as Robinson and Stern pointed out. One challenge facing continuous improvement efforts is been the pass/failure rate, but these failures have often been caused more by the approach than the concept. For example, management wants to increase productivity, so they meet with the workers. What management says: “We need to improve productivity to remain competitive in today’s tough marketplace. Do you have any ideas on how we can increase productivity?” What the workers hear: “You aren’t working hard enough. We want to make more money, and you have to come up with ideas to help us get it.” In the end, the workers just shrug their shoulders to indicate they do not have any ideas. Management concludes they do not care. Instead, another approach might work. What if management started the meeting with this? “We know you are all busting your butts, but we need your help fixing a problem. We need you tell us what management is doing that drives you crazy and keeps you from doing your job.” What a difference a little change in approach can make! Unfortunately there will still be some initial resistance from the workers to even this approach because they are skeptical that management wants to accept their ideas. However, when management demonstrates they not only want to hear the workers ideas but also encourage them to make the changes, it suddenly opens the door. One of the reasons this approach works is because it taps into what motivates the worker. Numerous studies reveal the two biggest worker motivators are appreciation and being in on things. How much more can the worker be in on something than to implement his own ideas? And there is no greater way to demonstrate your appreciation of the worker than to ask his opinion then let him implement it. This report is not an attempt to bash management. It is not that management does not have good ideas. It is not that management is not smart. It is merely a reflection of the fact that, in many situations, the worker has an advantage—namely, he is in the middle of the problem and understands it a lot better than those more removed. The worker knows what he can do to fix something, so the workers suggest things they know will work. When companies tap their in-house creativity to solve not only their internal problems but also those of their clients, they pave the way for greater profitability. 10 Reasons Cargo Container-Based Construction Will Revolutionize the Building Industry In the wake of economic challenges, concerns over the environment, and significant natural disasters, many industries are seeking alternative building approaches. One of these approaches has been to consider the revolutionary advances that cargo contained-based construction has made. Here are ten reasons that illustrate why this type of construction is so compelling.

Strength and Durability. Strength and durability of shipping container -based construction far exceeds the traditional stick built and most modular construction. Compared to traditional construction that uses wood, which can rot over time, the containers will experience no rot because the containers are made of steel. In addition, the frame can withstand severe damage in natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes. Creativity and Flexibility. Working with different materials and applications provides a way to think more creatively about the construction process. And, despite the fact that the containers come in pretty standard sizes, the actual possibilities are endless.

nindustry news CONEXPO-CON/AGG & IFPE 2014 surveys confirm attendee, exhibitor value

a small to medium size company.” Exhibitors at CONEXPO-CON/AGG & IFPE 2014 provided these comments about their show experience: “Our executive and management team said several times throughout the week that this year’s show was a ‘game changer’ for our company.”

Results will aid future show planning. Results of CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE 2014 attendee and exhibitor surveys confirm the shows’ success delivering positive results for attendees and exhibitors. Show management will use survey data to help fine-tune services and provide even more value at the 2017 expositions. CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE 2014 were held in March; the triennial shows will next be held March 7-11, 2017 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, USA. Both attendees and exhibitors overwhelmingly ranked the shows extremely high in quality and said they were very satisfied with their show experience.

Measurable value from show investment For attendees, 97 percent of survey respondents rated the shows as good to excellent, and 85 percent said they would probably or definitely attend the 2017 events (both metrics up from the 2011 shows). Some 72 percent said they had the authority to make purchasing decisions (in line with 2011). New products continued to be the main draw for attendees 92 percent cited this as their number-one reason to attend. (In focus groups, international visitors also cited the goal of better understanding the U.S. market). For exhibitors, 88 percent of survey respondents said the shows were high-quality exhibitions that benefited their companies (up from 2011), and 79 percent said they already planned to exhibit again in 2017 (another metric that increased from 2011). Some 95 percent reported they were satisfied to very satisfied with the number of attendees (metric increased past two show cycles). “We are very pleased that exhibitor satisfaction continues to rise; our goal for 2014 was to increase exhibitor ROI, and it appears we were successful,” said Glen Tellock, CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2014 show management committee chair and chairman, president and CEO of The Manitowoc Company Inc. “The time attendees spend at the show must be productive; improvements to wayfinding and the show footprint in 2014 really paid off,” said Anne Lloyd, show management committee vice chair and executive vice president and CFO at Martin Marietta Materials Inc.

“This was our first time exhibiting at CONEXPO-CON/AGG. The number and quality of leads that we gathered at this show was far superior to any of the shows we have previously attended.” “CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2014 was a tremendous show for our company. We executed a full marketing plan for the show and it truly paid off. Having free printed and email communications from the show truly helped get the word out.” For more information on the shows, visit www.conexpoconagg. com and www.ifpe.com. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

ICUEE Takes Number 2 Spot in Top-Trade-Shows List Show delivers demonstrations of the newest utility construction product innovations. ICUEE – The Demo Expo took the number 2 spot in the recentlyannounced Top U.S. Trade Shows list from the Trade Show News Network (TSNN). TSNN annually ranks shows by exhibit space net square footage. For 2013, ICUEE won for its record-breaking size of more than 1.17 million net square feet, second only to the 2013 CES show. TSNN is a leading online information resource for the exhibitions and events industry. The next ICUEE, International Construction and Utility Equipment Exposition, will be held September 29-October 1, 2015 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky. The biennial show features extensive test-drive opportunities where attendees can operate the equipment themselves in joblike conditions. “Attendees say this is where they prepare for the future and exhibitors cite the high quality of attendees,” stated Sara Truesdale Mooney, ICUEE show director and AEM senior director, exhibitions and strategy. “We’re planning for more equipment demos and interactive product demonstrations than ever before and targeted industry best-practices education. ICUEE 2015 will provide the products and knowledge attendees need to stay competitive.”

“A place where you can see and learn new things. A place where you will fall in love with the industry all over again.”

ICUEE perennially ranks among the top five in trade-showindustry exhibition rankings. AEM, the Association of Equipment Manufacturers, is show owner and producer and focuses on creating a high-quality show experience. AEM shows are industryrun in which participants have a voice in show planning, industry partnerships enhance value, costs are carefully monitored and revenues go back into industry services.

“Massive beyond anything you can imagine. The best place/ venue to learn about the industry, with education, products and technology all in one place.”

ICUEE targets utilities and utility contractors in the following sectors: electric, telecommunications, wastewater, water, natural gas, cable, and rail.

“As an operator you have to go just to see the enormity of the show and the new technology that you might not get to see working for
