Curb Shapers,Inc. Curb Shaper Improves Ease of Laying Curb and Gutter When laying a sidewalk or driveway, contractors often struggle to lay a professional-looking curb and gutter formations. Laying it by hand is time consuming, and curb rolling tools are often cumbersome to use. Curb Shaper has made it simple to form curbs and gutters quickly and professionally. With the ability to allow for variations in form work, the Curb Shaper is a flexible piece of machinery that makes laying the curb simple. The machine is designed to create a 24-inch curb and gutter, but can be adjusted up to 2-1/2 inches on either side. The Curb Shaper can also be adjusted to work on a 18-inch curb and gutter with ease. It can also be adjusted during use to accommodate the variations in form work that are common with this type of project. When asked about the product and the best way to use it, Doug Weber said, “We’ve found the best way to use the tool is

to pour around a three inch slump, stack the concrete about 10 to 12-inches wide, flatten and edge the top so you are level or even slightly downhill to the gutter side.” Flattening out the concrete beforehand prevents it from building up on the machine. Further features on the Curb Shaper that are designed to make it easy to use include its handle grips on each side of the machine. These allow the operator to easily turn corners. It also has an adjustable handle, so operations that have multiple users can easily adjust for their varying heights. Fore more information about the Curb Shaper, visit online at www.curbshapers.com or call 877-633-0893.

The All-Around Decision:

Choosing the Right

Higher lift heights reduce back dragging that would otherwise remove material that was just added to the pile. It also allows users to stack material into steep piles in order to optimize space.

Dozer Blade Goes Beyond the Basics Equipment and tools can be selected because of the one thing they do best, but more often they make it onto jobsites because of the many things they do best. Look around any roadwork or construction site and you’ll spot an arsenal of equipment and attachments that fit this description. One attachment that lends itself to the versatility every contractor can use is the dozer blade. It takes on heavy-duty work day in and day out, preparing worksites, grading roads, creating ditches and pushing tons of snow.

Dozer blades are built to be multi-purpose, but not all

How High Can You Go Most dozer blades move up and down, but how far they reach can impact capabilities. Lift heights vary from 23 to 48 inches. Blades with lower lift heights are limited to low-level applications, such as landscaping and grading roads, and can only stack material in small piles. Higher lift heights allow users to stack more material like soil or snow into steeper piles, which helps saves space. Operators also can lift the blade high enough to avoid back dragging that would otherwise remove material they just added to the pile and require rework.

maneuvering over rough terrain or materials, look for a system that routes them up and out of the way. This also prevents buildup of material and saves operators the time and hassle of having to clean it out. Some systems even incorporate steel routing instead of rubber for ultimate durability.

Come a Little Closer While the ideal blade height depends on the application, maintaining optimal control of material, whether it’s 4 inches or 4 feet in the air, is important for every application. A parallel lift system, which is available on some blades, allows the operator to maintain precise control because it keeps the blade straight up and down as it’s lifted.

The Lowdown on Upkeep

A blade system with hydraulic hoses routed up and out of the way helps avoid damage that can occur from material that would otherwise get caught up in the hoses or when maneuvering over rough terrain.

Maintaining a dozer blade is simple. It usually only requires greasing of zerks and replacing cutting edges. However, there are a few things that further simplify maintenance. Some manufacturers design blades with zerks that are easy to access, which saves

reports through a standardized process. Field workers choose from 120 different checklists based on the type of equipment being inspected. The app then walks the inspector through each step and requests pictures to supplement ratings and text. The app provides an alert if an inspector has missed any necessary information, which eliminates incomplete reports and the need for return trips. •

Improved service: The app improves service and creates a faster sales cycle because inspection data and images are being reported together electronically. Since additional data entry is not required, items and their inspection reports can be listed for IronPlanet buyers more quickly. Better media for IronPlanet’s marketplace: Since buyers rely on photos when bidding on equipment, it’s important for images to be high quality. The app allows inspectors to take better quality pictures using the iPad camera. The checklists ensure inspectors have images of every aspect of the equipment.

With a 20-foot by 6-foot top deck and a 19-foot by 6-foot bottom deck, the machine has a total screening area of 234 square feet. This two-deck design enables the production and sorting of up to three different size products. In addition, the decks are interchangeable for more control over end-product size.

the retractable RT5-5601 Hardhat Lanyard System is the missing safety link.

For more information visit www.irockcrushers.com.

The new hardhat lanyard is load tested to safely tether all commonly used industrial hardhats. The RT5-5601 is easily attached with Velcro strap loops and cinches around the fall protection harness strap, ring or tri-bar. It is designed to keep the lanyard close to the body to avoid discomfort and entanglement.

IPA Introduces the Digital Flow Meter Nozzle IPA® (Innovative Products of America®, Inc.) announces its latest innovation, the High-Flow Digital Meter Nozzle (#9048), for transferring common fuels, while monitoring volume in real-time. Safe to use on gasoline, diesel and kerosene, the High-Flow Digital Meter Nozzle provides an accurate method for transferring common fuels by integrating a high-quality, accurate digital flow meter into a low-profile, fuel nozzle. This first time product combines the meter and nozzle, which are typically purchased separately and assembled in the field by the end-user into one convenient safe product.

Dropped from aloft, a hardhat is a one-pound unguided missile that endangers the entire worksite. It’s an accident that can be virtually eliminated with Hammerhead Industries’ innovative Gear Keeper RT5-5601 Hardhat Lanyard Retention System.

The new lanyard uses a sturdy, industrial-grade spectra/ nylon line that extends up to 14-inches. For additional safety, the Gear Keeper Hardhat Lanyard model RT5601 features a gentle 2.5 oz. retraction force that takes up any unused slack. And, when it’s time to break for lunch, the Gear Keeper hardhat lanyard allows the worker to take off his hardhat and drape it over his shoulder for safekeeping. With the new Gear Keeper Hardhat Lanyard, securing a hardhat is quick and easy thanks to the unit’s convenient snap clip mount. The retractable lanyard’s stainless steel spring, hardware and high-impact case allow it to stand up to daily rigorous use of workers on the job. And, when workers are ready to call it a day, Gear Keeper’s patented Quick Connect™ System allows the hardhat to be easily disconnected without completely removing the lanyard’s base. The Hardhat Lanyard System model RT5-5601 retails for $14.99. Contact the company for special bulk pricing.

IPA®’s Meter/Nozzle Combination Provides Convenience and Accuracy During Fuel Transfer. The meter display is in direct line of sight with the point of fuel delivery and measures in gallons, liters, quarts or pints. Settings include a lifetime tally, which may be calibrated in the field. Additionally, the inline wire mesh filter protects the meter, and prevents unwanted contaminants from being transferred. New Lanyard Retention System Adds More Security To Fall-Protection Harness Systems At The Drop Of A Hat You Could Cause A Lot Of Damage To The Worksite. In the unfortunate event of a fall, a fall-arrest harness will protect the worker, but as his hardhat continues the descent, a fall-arrest harness won’t protect the work site. Designed for use with all fall-protection harness systems,

“All Gear Keeper lanyard and tether ratings are load tested with up to a 100% safety margin, beyond the break point, to safely handle the shock load,” said John Salentine, VP of Hammerhead Industries. “Gear tethering is a site safety issue and safety starts with the proper mating of the tool, tether and application to ensure continued productivity and safety in the work environment.” For more information visit www.gearkeeper.com/guide. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Larson Electronics Releases Remote Controlled LED Golight Spotlight Larson Electronics has announced the release of a powerful new remote control Golight spotlight fitted with an LED lamp assembly for even greater reliability and beam quality. The GL-30004 LED Golight Stryker is a weatherproof and fully remote control spotlight that produces a 2,500 lumen light beam capable of illuminating objects over 900 feet away, and with an upgraded LED lamp assembly offers far greater durability and lamp longevity than standard halogen spotlights. The GL-30004 LED Golight Stryker takes the power and reliability of high quality Golight spotlights to the next level with the addition of a powerful LED lamp assembly in place of the standard halogen lamp. This compact yet high output spotlight features LED technology, full remote control operation, weatherproof construction, and the ability to connect directly to standard 12 volt electrical systems. While standard Golights typically utilize a halogen bulb for a good compromise between power, value, and easy servicing, this unit has been upgraded with an advanced LED lamp assembly that greatly increases the quality and performance of the light beam. Rather than the yellowish beam produced by a halogen bulb, this LED spotlight produces an extremely bright white beam, giving it much better intensity and color reproducing qualities, especially at long distances. At 900 feet, you could read a book by this beam. “These new LED models have a lower amp draw, longer lamp life, and are more durable than halogen models, making them ideal for boating, hurting, and off-road use,” Continued on next page

Western® introduces the MVP 3 V-plow Snow Plow TM

The Western MVP 3 V-plow provides a whole new slant on V-plow performance and durability. “While retaining the best of our popular MVP PLUS V-plow, the new MVP 3 adds performance and durability features that take V-plow productivity and reliability to another level,” said Doug Clark, Western Products Product Manager. “The most noticeable change is the flared blade design. The blades soar from a 31-inch center height up to 39 inches at the outer edge on the 9’ 6” models.” Blades are available in 7’6”, 8’6” and 9’6” widths in either powder-coated steel or poly material. The enhanced center hinge features three connection points for added strength, plus a larger 1-1/4” diameter heat-treated center pin means more durability.

Rock Breakers Introduces New RBI Hydraulic Breaker

Lura Presents the Lightning Strike Roller Screed System

For contractors who have to deal with rock issues, Rock Breakers, Inc., (RBI) has a new product to help, the RBI Hydraulic Breaker.

Lura Enterprises is a distributor of the award-winning Lightning Strike Roller Screed system that is based on a patented pass-through resulting in reduced costs.

This newly released product has all of the features construction operations have come to expect from the RBI brand, including interchangeability between machines and easy-to-maintain designs. The new breaker joins the extensive list of Huskie Hydraulic Hammer breakers already offered by RBI. When asked why the company decided to design its own hydraulic hammer, Jose Torres, president of RBI, said, “When IPC Industries, the distributor of the popular Huskie Hydraulic Hammer, announced it was going out of business, I purchased all rights and assets of the company. We have the original Huskie Hammer factory drawings, and we have picked up where they left off. The new RBI Hydraulic Breaker is simply the end result of that.”

Equipped with a patented pivot pin in the center that makes easy work of circular pours, it reduces the manpower required to operate the system and can perform a wide variety of pours with fewer tubes. While its pin holds the motor steady, the hex driver goes into action. It disconnects easily for pours from any direction and when used in concrete or pervious concrete applications, it leaves a flatter slab while delivering a high level of floor flatness as well as floor level numbers. The end result will not have high spots that need to be ground down for an aerated floor.

In addition to the new hydraulic breaker, RBI stocks the largest inventory of Huskie parts in the nation, and 95 percent of their inventory can ship the same day. They’ve also reproduced the popular HH500-2 model as a US-made product. For those who already own breakers, RBI offers a Rebuild Program, which involves a complete teardown and inspection of the breaker along with a written estimate of the necessary repairs. For more information visit www.rbibreakers.com or call 630-701-0172.

Fully Adjustable for Ease of Use “Ultra-fast hydraulics deliver maximum plowing efficiency,” adds Clark. “And the trip-edge design provides protection in all blade configurations, getting you over obstacles without losing your load of snow.” Standard UltraLock double-acting cylinders hold the wings firmly in place for clean back-dragging while allowing you to lock both wings together to easily maneuver your plow as a straight blade. Other standard MVP 3 V-plow features include the Western Fleet Flex electrical system for true fleet interchangeability with programmable features like “softstop”, “one-touch float” and the Security Guard™ antitheft system. The MVP 3 also incorporates the enhanced UltraMount® 2 mounting system with its new one-piece frame design for added strength and durability – providing simple mechanical hook-up with an exclusive rotating pivot bar for accurate drive-in alignment on uneven terrain.

The curb runner is completely adjustable for either rightsided pours or left sided as well as crowns and valleys. It goes along the existing curb, form or sidewalk and can be situated on the motor side. Since there is no need to position support stakes, it saves on time and supplies. With the adjustability of the handle, elevated pours can be positioned to the precise angle. It has a unique riser wheel so it can operate on concrete to concrete with less wear and tear on its tubes.

Easy Setup and Safe Design It takes less than ten minutes to set up the lightweight but powerful system and the labor saving attachments alleviate the need for extra workers. Because it works on a reduced level of friction, there is less pressure on the knees, shoulders and backs of workers and with its built in safety features, there are fewer claims for compensation from work related injuries. For more information call 701-281-8989 or visit www.LuraConcreteScreed.com.

Prescient Completes World’s First Building Constructed Using Standardized Light Gauge Steel Structural System Prescient, an innovative software and structural system manufacturing company, recently announced the completion of the first building featuring its standardized light gauge structural system. A new addition to the thriving Highlands neighborhood in Denver, Colorado the B Street LoHi building was built using Prescient’s patent pending technology, which standardizes multi-family design and construction and provides faster, greener and more cost-competitive building. “Standardized systems with flexibility, like Prescient, are the future of construction,” said Paul Books, president of Palisade Partners, the project’s developer. “Prescient has found an incredibly effective way to standardize every step of the process, from design to construction. It’s a first of its kind, and we are excited to be a part of the construction frontier.” Prescient’s standardized architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) process combines proprietary software, a patent pending manufacturing system and a simplified installation process that speeds up building time and lowers overall development costs.

The B Street LoHi building’s 60,000-square-foot, five-story apartment structure was installed in just six weeks – a production rate of over 15 thousand square feet per week, which is roughly three times faster than the average build time of a wood frame structure. “This first building is evidence that our standardized structural alternative allows complete design freedom while speeding up build time and reducing costs,” said John Vanker, CEO and co-founder of Prescient. “We’ve already begun installation on our second building and are currently bidding on active projects across the country of over 3.5 million square feet.” Prescient’s next building, University Station, a six-story affordable housing complex near the University of Denver light rail station, is currently being erected. The building dovetails nicely with Denver Mayor Michael Hancock’s call for more affordable housing during his recent state of the city address. November 2013

Vanker expects the framing for the University Station building to be complete in just five weeks, an improvement over their first building’s faster-than-average installation time. You can watch the building’s progress online at the following live webcam: oxblue.com/open/beck/ universitystation. “This is a milestone for the industry,” said Prescient’s Chairman, Satyen Patel. “In 2012, more than 500 million square feet of multi-family apartments, condos, hotels, dorms and senior and assisted living housing were built in the U.S. Going forward, Prescient is positioned to win its fair share of this segment. Our technology is well suited for U.S. and international markets and we plan to take this global.” For more information visit www.prescientco.com. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

ValueRail.com Awards ‘Lean’ Savings to Customers ValueRail.com, a factory-direct, on-line supplier of lowcost safety guard rail, has announced a 10% across-theboard price reduction for its complete line of protective railing products as a result of the company’s successful investment in ‘lean’ manufacturing processes. According to Hue Schlegel, Director of Marketing for ValueRail.com, “We have made tremendous strides in streamlining and improving our manufacturing processes; including consistent quality robotic welding and applying a highly durable 2-part polyurethane coating to all of our ValueRail products. These and other manufacturing improvements have not only enhanced quality, but have reduced our manufacturing costs, which we are pleased to pass along to our valued customers.” ValueRail™ guard rail meets OSHA safety requirements and provides an impact resistance comparable to many competitive guard rail products on the market today – including imports. Direct on-line purchasing not only reduces transaction costs, but allows contractors, warehouse managers, safety engineers, manufacturers and facility personnel to quickly select what they need and purchase it with a credit card. ValueRail™ guarding products are 100% made in the U.S.A., precision formed from high-strength steel, and painted safety yellow. In-line and corner guard rail posts are manufactured using solid structural wide flange beams, providing an economical solution for rail support. Single-, double- and triple-rail configurations are available in one foot lengths from 2 to 10 feet, providing a wide range of protection options. Anchor bolts and the appropriate rail hardware are included with all post configurations. A Lift-Out Kit is also available that adds pockets to standard posts allowing the user to slide standard rails in-and-out rather than rigidly bolting them to the posts. Additionally, ValueRail Pedestrian Handrail is available in 6 ft. sections to separate work zones, control traffic flow, and clearly define walkways around equipment, machinery, material staging areas, in-plant offices, doorways, and many other ground-level applications.

Asset Protection Lawyer Offers 3 Steps to Take Now by Hillel L. Presser, Esq., MBA

N

ow, you really can live forever, but that’s not necessarily a good thing.

Many of your online accounts – from automatic bill payments to eBay – may remain active after you pass away, unless you take steps to ensure they don’t, says attorney Hillel Presser, author of “Financial Self-Defense (Revised Edition),” www.assetprotectionattorneys.com. Automatic bill pay, for example, can theoretically keep tapping your bank account long after you’re gone or, at least, until your money is. “It’s important to make sure your online bank and shopping accounts, even your social media, can be closed out, or that your loved ones are authorized to access them,” Presser says. “You may ask, ‘Why would I care if I’m gone?’ I can tell you from experience: because it can create real headaches, and more heartache, for your family.”

Bank and shopping accounts will be vulnerable to identity theft, which would affect your estate if someone opens credit cards in your name. You might have valuable intellectual property, like domain names. They may need access to your health records, particularly if you died under questionable circumstances, he says. There’s the sentimental stuff – photos and emails – that your family may want as a remembrance of you, and the libraries of music and ebooks, which may represent a considerable investment on your part. “The problem is, even if you provide a family member with all of your accounts, log-ins and passwords, they may not be legally allowed to access them,” Presser says. “In many cases, they may be violating the accounts’ terms of service or violating federal privacy and computer fraud laws. Some states have laws governing online materials, but they’re different and which of your accounts are covered depends on where the provider is located.” What can you do to ensure your family isn’t left with a virtual nightmare after your passing? Presser offers these tips:

Create a list of all of your accounts, including login names, passwords, and answers to any security questions. Obviously, your list will need to be securely stored. Since you’ll need to update it regularly as you add accounts or change passwords, it will be easiest if you keep the list on your computer in a password-protected folder. Some versions of Windows allow you to create protected folders, but you may need to get third-party software to do this, such as free AxCrypt. Remember to create a backup of your list, whether it’s on a jump drive or printed out on paper. Store the backup in a secure place such as a safe deposit box. Do not put password information in your will, which is a public document. If you have a Google account, set up the new inactive account manager. In May 2013, Google became the first site to give users an option for choosing what becomes of their content if they should become debilitated or die. Under the profile button, click “Account,” scroll down to “Account Management,” and you’ll find instructions for “Control what happens to your account when you stop using Google.” You can select how long the account should be inactive before your plans are set into motion; choose to whom you want to offer content, such as YouTube videos, Gmail, Google+ posts, Blogger and Picasa web albums, or whether it should simply be deleted.

Appoint a digital executor. Perhaps the simplest way to ensure your online life is taken care of is to appoint a digital executor – a techsavvy person who will be willing and able to carry out your wishes. Authorize the person to access your inventory of log-in information and spell out what you want done with each account, whether it’s providing access to loved ones or business partners, or deleting it.

The digital world has grown and transformed so rapidly, the law hasn’t kept up, which makes managing your digital afterlife challenging, Presser says. “Until there are more consistent laws and procedures governing this area, it’s best to plan ahead, leave clear instructions and be sure you have a list of accounts where your estate lawyer or a loved one can find it and access it,” he says. “It will make a world of difference to your survivors.”

Strategies to Increase Profitability Traveling around the country a common complaint I hear from contractors is how crazy the competitive bid market is today. Contractors can’t control the marketplace; however, they can control their response to it. Regardless of the market conditions, contractors must focus on delivering high value. To do this they must be proactive, but unfortunately responding to the designbid-build process is reactive.

One road builder client, despite having to bid most of his work, makes more than average profit margins, because he bids work that his competitors don’t know how to do. The high value he brings is his superior knowledge and skill. Another contractor was frustrated with conditions so he took the initiative to meet with his clients and ask how he could provide better value? He asked his clients what he could do for them that he wasn’t doing. With this information he adapted his services and in the process was able to increase his profit margin by four percent. While every client is different and there is no silver bullet, what follows are eight strategies that you can use to take control of your marketplace, or at least improve it. The first three are simply common sense, but unfortunately too many contractors don’t take advantage of them.

Trust.

While it seems at times that the only thing clients are concerned about is how low a price they can get, they are also frustrated with poor performance by contractors. Of course, a lot of that has to do with them taking ridiculously low prices. However, contractors that establish a reputation for trust; namely, doing what they say they will do and who also help the client make the right decisions; have an opportunity to breakthrough.

Fairness. Fairness is related to trust. Clients hate the games contractors play by bidding low then attempting to recover their costs with excessive change orders. Contractors that provide good value for their services can distinguish themselves.

Easy to deal with. Problems will occur. The question is how you deal with them when they occur. Do you provide leadership to solve the problems when they occur? Do you do what’s right and not what is expedient for you? An interesting statistic is that if you make a mistake and handle it to the client’s satisfaction, the client will be more loyal then if you never made a mistake. The next five strategies offer contractors ways to differentiate their services from their competitors.

Expertise. Of course there are consumers that are always looking for a deal, but that’s not a prospective client for a high performing contractor. In contrast, intelligent consumers understand the value of working with high performing contractors that provide superior solu-

tions for their problems and issues. However, it’s not enough to have experience, you need to prove to the client you possess the necessary expertise. This proof is referred to by Professor Dean Kashiwagi of Arizona State University as “dominant proof.” Dominant proof is evidence that when reviewed almost everyone will have the same conclusion. In the contractor’s situation he must have evidence that supports the soundness of his advice and the quality of his performance from previous projects.

Options. Contractors need to understand that they need to be able to provide options for clients. The one size fits all approach doesn’t work. Clients have different budgets and priorities. The value based contractor listens to the client’s requirements then uses his expertise to create an option that fits the client’s specific needs.

Flexibility. Options are related to flexibility. Options refer to the technical aspects of the solution, in other words it describes what you are providing. Flexibility refers to how it is delivered or the procedures. An example might be how you adapt your efforts to meet a clients schedule and operational needs in an existing facility. Peter Drucker wrote that every business needs two skills: marketing and innovation. When he referred to marketing he wasn’t talking about the contractor’s brochure or PowerPoint presentation. He was referring to market research.

Engagement. To truly understand the client’s needs the contractor must engage the client in a dialogue. Often client’s think they know what they want, but unfortunately what they think they need will not produce the desired results. Therefore, the value based contractor insures there is sufficient dialogue to uncover the results the client desires. The contractor can then use its expertise to provide the best solution.

Innovation or Creativity. Once a contractor understands a client’s true problem and the desired results the client wants, the contractor can use its creativity to develop an innovative solution based on its expertise and understanding of the situation. The value based contractor understands the process is not about them, but it’s about delivering the best possible value to the client. This can only consistently occur when the contractor truly understands the client’s needs and delivers on those needs. Contractors that use these strategies on a consistent basis experience increased profitability. Ted Garrison, president of Garrison Associates, is a catalyst for change. Compressed Air Quality for Air Plasma Cutting Systems:

How much air, do I need filtering, do I need moisture removal? Ensuring your air compressor is sized adequately for your plasma cutter and its intended usage. Sizing a compressor for a plasma cutter depends on a couple of things: 1. The minimum flow/pressure requirements of the plasma cutter you intend to use. The manufacturer can provide the specs and they can vary from model to model. A small Hypertherm Powermax30 will use about 4.5 cfm (cubic feet per minute) at 90 psi inlet pressure. A Hypertherm Powermax45 uses 6 cfm at 90 psi. If you have a small compressor with exactly the same cfm rating as the plasma, then the compressor will run continuously when you are plasma cutting; the size of the air compressor tank will allow the plasma to run for a few seconds (or minutes if the tank is huge) until the pressure drops a bit (usually to about 90 psi), then the compressor will run to try to maintain the pressure. 2. How much cutting are you planning to do? If you are a weekend hobbyist just cutting an occasional piece of steel for a project, then a compressor with a cfm rating slightly higher than the plasma will likely be adequate. If you are doing a lot of cutting, cutting thick plate (same air consumption but slower cut speeds = longer cut time) or are using the system to earn a living, and then size the compressor at 1.5 to 2 times the plasma system requirement. Another note on air for plasma systems and all air tools: Compressors take air at atmospheric pressure and increase the pressure and store it in a tank. Humidity in the air is often condensed in the tank and in the airlines, more so during humid weather. Drain your compressor tank often, and if moisture in your air lines is at all noticeable, it is a good idea to add additional filtration to the air system that absorbs or removes moisture.

How to be sure the air for the plasma system is free of moisture and particulates Most air plasma systems from reputable manufacturers have an onboard particulate filter and many also have a coalescing filter with an auto drain that will remove some moisture from air systems. For most low use situations (hobbyists and light industrial users) the onboard filter dryer is adequate. There are many situations however that will require additional steps are taken to ensure moisture does not affect performance of the plasma cutter, often these steps are needed when the system is used in extremely humid environments, or during those few weeks of the year when the hot summer weather brings humid conditions. Moisture that forms in air lines has a

November 2013

tendency to condense into larger drops when the air pressure decreases as it is entering the plasma torch. When these drops enter into the high temperatures (as much as 20,000 degrees F.) in the plenum of the torch, they immediately break down into oxygen and hydrogen, which alters the normal chemical content of air in the torch. These elements will then dramatically change the plasma arc which causes the torch consumables parts to wear very quickly, altering the shape of the nozzle orifice and dramatically affecting cut quality in terms of edge squareness, dross formation, and edge smoothness. As a minimum with air systems that contain moisture be sure to drain the receiver (tank) on the air compressor at least daily. If water comes out of the bottom petcock valve of your tank, then there are moisture particles in your air lines. Draining the tank regularly will minimize the moisture and the above effects, but will not eliminate it. In order to ensure that the air receiver tank stays as moisture free as possible, install an automatic drain system that rids the tank of moisture with every pressure building cycle. The next minimal steps if moisture is found in the receiver would be to install a particulate filter that is designed to either trap water through absorption (the filter element literally absorbs water and must be changed after it is near saturation). This type of filter (a popular one is the MotorGuard M80 filter canister with its replaceable elements) should be mounted at least 20 feet downstream of the compressor, allowing the heat generated by the compressor to cool a bit as this will help to condense the water droplets and trap them in the absorption filter. Another type of moisture trap is of the coalescing (kind of a centrifugal filter that spins the heavier moisture and drains it through an automatic drain) type typically used in many automotive paint spraying applications. If the plasma system is used at medium to high duty cycles, for production use, or is in a climate with extreme humidity, then higher technology steps may need to be taken in order to remove moisture from the air system adequately. A refrigerated air dryer, as its name implies, uses a small refrigeration circuit that cools the compressed air to its dew point. This cool air then more easily displaces the moisture into a coalescing moisture trap with an auto drain. There also are a variety of desiccant filter systems that will adsorb (yes that is spelled correctly!) moisture through a chemical process, drying the air in the system very effectively. I always refer plasma chuting shops that are looking for air drying answers to the same companies that help condition air systems for automotive body and paint shops, as the air flow and dryness requirements for

www.contractorsequipmentdirectory.com | The

*Image courtesy of Sharpe Air Systems

paint spraying applications are very similar to plasma cutting needs. Here is a nice schematic of a complete shop plumbing system as found on the Sharpe Air Systems website. It may be a bit overkill for a small plasma cutting operation, however it correctly shows methods of plumbing that include drop, legs for draining the system, shows that the clean dry air is best sourced at the highest points in the plumbing system, as well as showing best locations for filters, regulators and drying equipment.

Determining if your plasma system is receiving adequate inlet pressure and flow from the air system. Every plasma system has input minimum and maximum air or gas flow pressure specifications. Most plasma systems also have a choice of consumable parts for cutting at different amperage levels for different thickness materials. To determine if the plumbing system leading up to the inlet of the plasma is adequate follow these steps: In your plasma system operators’ manual look up the inlet gas pressure range, this will be found in the gas specification section. As an example, the Powermax85 air plasma system specifies a range from 85 to 135 psi air pressure at the inlet.

Install a pressure gauge right at the inlet to the plasma system that will accurately measure the proper inlet pressure. Install the largest amperage set of consumables for the plasma system. Example: with a Powermax85 install the 85 amp shielded consumables. Activate the

Contractors Equipment Directory

system so that air is flowing at the torch, set the cutting gas flows or pressures according to the cut charts in the operators’ manual. (Note that the cut gas flow/pressure is not the same as the inlet has flow/pressure). Observe the newly installed gauge at the inlet to the plasma system. You will notice the pressure on this gauge is higher when there is no gas flowing at the torch; this is static pressure and it should be no higher than the maximum pressure specification from your operators manual (Powermax85 maximum is 135 psi). When the air is flowing the gauge reading will drop, this being dynamic pressure. If the gauge drops below the minimum requirement (Powermax85 is 85 psi), then there is a restriction in the plumbing system that will affect operation.

Summary A system with a properly sized gas or air plumbing system will show a minimal pressure drop between static and dynamic pressure as measured right at the inlet to the plasma system. If the drop is excessive, then one of the following is suspect: Hose or pipe inside diameter is too small. Hose or pipe length is too long. Too many fittings. Each fitting on a plumbing system creates a small pressure drop. Filters or moisture/oil traps are incorrectly sized or are clogged/ saturated.

Lone Star Drills from Little Beaver Launch Video Series On LS T1+ Operation Little Beaver, Inc., the leading manufacturer of mechanical and hydraulic earth drills and accessories, has released a five-part video series on the operation, troubleshooting and maintenance for its trailer-mounted Lone Star LS T1+ drill. Lone Star Drills is a robust line of water well drilling equipment that is effective in a wide range of topographical and soil conditions. The videos serve as unique, easy-to-find resources packed with specific guidelines and instructions and range from approximately two to seven minutes long. When the Zombies Come, Where’s Your VMAC? On Friday the 13th of September, VMAC released the first incredible documentation of how effective VMAC air compressor systems are in fighting an onslaught of zombies. The seven minute video - the first episode in a series - shows how VMAC’s systems have proved successful for a group of survivors following the zombie apocalypse. Filmed on Vancouver Island, the first web episode follows the exploits of the Hal’On’Wheels mechanic, who in the search of VMAC’s newest air system, the RAPTAIR-MF Multifunction. In the video, survivors of the zombie apocalypse demonstrate the value of using VMAC air systems as well as revealing the most effective zombiedispatching techniques. To see behind-the-scenes photos from the filming, visit VMAC’s Facebook page. For more information about VMAC and their Air Compressor Systems, visit www.vmacair.com or call 800-738-8622.

“These new videos solidify our commitment to providing customers the best possible resources for their drilling missions,” says Little Beaver President Joe Haynes. “We want our products to be easy to operate so customers get the most out of them in the field. These videos will go a long way toward that goal.” The series showcases real Lone Star Drills professionals performing the discussed topics. Parts one through three feature step-by-step directions on basic preparation and drilling procedures in a simple manner. Parts four and five approach realistic conditions, circumstances and probabilities, then present proactive solutions to keep users and their drills performing at maximum capacity.
