Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police representatives on Thursday evening, May 3, presented the Fayetteville Police Department and its Accreditation Manager Ann Burdette with a plaque commemorating their recently-earned state certification status.
Fayetteville Police Department becomes 125th agency in Georgia to earn state certification Less than a year after Police Chief Scott Gray and his officers set their sights on becoming a state certified agency, that official recognition came during the May 3 Fayetteville City Council meeting. Mark Bender with the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police made the presentations and noted that the Fayetteville Police Department is the 125th law enforcement agency of about 600 in the state to earn the certification. “By becoming state certified, the police department has taken that extra step to raise the level of their performance to meet these
standards, because they’re not easy standards to meet,” Bender said. “They have to develop their policies, they have to show proof of compliance.” Mayor Ed Johnson noted that Accreditation Manager Ann Burdette guided the police department through the process. “We are thankful Ms. Burdette has come on board,” Johnson said. “She has been an integral part in making sure accreditation is achieved.” Bender also congratulated Burdette. “It’s thankless at times,” Burdette said. “When you finally receive this award, it is amazing.”

The City of Fayetteville Finance Department has for the 12th consecutive year been awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award by the Government Finance Officers Association. The award represents a significant achievement by the entity. It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. In order to receive the budget award, the entity had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device.
Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories, and in the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award. When a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is granted to an entity, a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation is also presented to the individual(s) or department designated as being primarily responsible for having achieved the award. This has been presented to the Finance Department. There are over 1,600 participants in the Budget Awards Program. Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.

Mayor and City Council declare May 6-12 “Municipal Clerks Week” in Fayetteville

One of the first orders of business during the May 3 Fayetteville City Council meeting was for the Mayor and City Council to honor City Clerk Anne Barksdale and Deputy City Clerk Valerie Glass by declaring May 6-12 to be “Municipal Clerks Week” in Fayetteville. The Municipal Clerks Week tradition began in 1969 with the International Institute of Municipal Clerks and is endorsed by all of its members throughout the United States, Canada and 15 other countries. In 1984 and in 1994, Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, respectively, signed proclamations officially declaring Municipal Clerks Week the first full week of May and recognizing the essential role municipal clerks play in local government. Governor Nathan Deal has also signed a proclamation proclaiming Municipal Clerks Week in the State of Georgia. Barksdale joined the City of Fayetteville in May 1999, and she became Deputy City Clerk in September 2004. She has been City Clerk since September 2012. Glass joined the City of Fayetteville in January 2014 and was promoted later that year to the office of Deputy City Clerk. Page 3

It provides the professional link between citizens and local governing bodies and agencies; and WHEREAS, municipal clerks have pledged their neutrality and impartiality, rendering equal service to all; and WHEREAS, the Office of the Municipal Clerk serves as the information center on functions of local government and community; and WHEREAS, municipal clerks continually strive to improve the Office of the Municipal Clerk through participation in education programs, seminars, workshops, and the annual meetings of their state, province, county, and international professional organizations. Oz Pizza, TCBY, and Margarita Momma’s Bourbon Street Grille won top honors at the 2018 Taste of Fayette held May 6 on the lawn of the Old Fayette County Courthouse in Historic Downtown Fayetteville. “Finest Taste” went to Oz Pizza, “Finest Treat” to TCBY, and “Most Amazing Booth” to Margarita Momma’s Bourbon Street Grille”. This year’s event featured 17 food/beverage vendors and 45 informational/retail vendors. Main Street Fayetteville Program Manager Joyce Waits said nearly 80 volunteers teamed up to make the event a success. This was the first year for Taste of Fayette to be held on the Old Fayette County Courthouse lawn, and Waits said it was a well-received change. “It was nice to have so much green space,” She said. “Everyone enjoyed the shade, which contributed to a fun day.” Downtown Development Director Brian Wismer said The Mike Lowry Band was a hit with the crowd, Bi-Weekly Report - May 14, 2018
which he estimated to have been about 3,000 people during the four-hour event. Also popular were the face paintings provided by the Whitewater High School Beta Club and the balloon creations made by Balloon Man. Volunteers with the Fayette Rocks Kindness Project were also on hand to help young and old alike paint encouraging rocks, some of which are being set aside to replenish the small collection at the base of the Fayetteville City Hall flag pole. Always an event highlight, artwork from public schools all over Fayette County was displayed in a temporary gallery. Participating schools this year included Starr’s Mill High, McIntosh High, Rising Star Middle, J. C. Booth Middle, Sara Harp Minter Elementary, Huddleston Elementary, Robert J. Burch Elementary, Braelinn Elementary, Inman Elementary, Peeples Elementary, Oak Grove Elementary, and Kedron Elementary. Page 4

TUSK, Boz Scaggs take the stage in June Two back-to-back Saturday evening concerts in June featuring TUSK (Fleetwood Mac tribute) on the 2nd and Boz Scaggs on the 9th promise to kick the year into high gear at Zac Brown’s Southern Ground Amphitheater in Historic Downtown Fayetteville. Hwy. 54 repaving under way in Fayetteville
Georgia Department of Transportation contractors are repaving the entire length of Hwy. 54 from the Coweta County line on the west side to the Tara Boulevard intersection in Clayton County on the east side.
