MAYOR AND TWO COUNCILMEMBERS COMMENCE NEW TERM IN OFFICE STATE COURT JUDGE JASON THOMPSON officiated the Fayetteville City Council’s swearingin ceremony Thursday evening, January 18, marking the continued service of councilmembers Joe Clark and Darryl Langford as well as Mayor Ed Johnson for another four years. BOARD APPOINTMENTS THE FAYETTEVILLE MAYOR and City Council during their January 18 meeting unanimously appointed several new members to the Planning & Zoning

Commission, Ethics Board, and Public Facility Authority. Appointed to the Planning & Zoning Commission were Lori Mideau (Post 2), Kelly Brown (Post 4), and Chris Key (Post 6). They will each serve January 2024 through December 2025. They join Sarah Murphy, Toby Spencer, and David Hilderbrandt, who

are each serving terms that began January 2023 and expire December 2024. Lydia Powell was appointed to the Ethics Board. Ron Cantoni, Aaron Wright, and Nancy Musselwhite were appointed to the Public Facility Authority.

CITY CLERK VALERIE GLASS RETIRES AFTER NEARLY A DECADE WITH FAYETTEVILLE FAYETTEVILLE CITY CLERK VALERIE GLASS retired in December after serving the City for almost 10 years. Glass joined the City in 2014as a Finance Department employee, and she became Deputy City Clerk in 2016, serving alongside then-City Clerk Anne Barksdale. Glass also served as Executive Assistant to City Manager Ray Gibson. When Barksdale retired at the end of 2022, Glass was promoted to the role of City Clerk, and Chelsea Siemen became the Deputy City Clerk. Siemen is now the Interim City Clerk.

“The clerk in local government wears many hats, ensuring that local government is operating efficiently and effectively, and ensuring that the Executive Team of the City, the Mayor and Council, myself, and others are meeting all their obligations,” said Gibson as he addressed the City Council during their January 18 meeting. “Keeping all of us on schedule is not an easy task.” “Projects, like the City Hall & City Center Park, these projects don’t happen without people like Valerie working behind the

scenes to get the proper paperwork executed and the meetings organized,” Gibson continued. “We all appreciate her commitment and, most of all, her friendship, and we wish her all the best in retirement.” “Valerie has been a tremendous asset to the City, especially to the Administrative Department,” said Mayor Ed Johnson. “She was the go-to person for me as the Mayor and for all of the Council. So, Valerie, you are truly going to be missed, but we hope that you will enjoy retirement.”

THE CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE announced two Employees of the Month for December 2023, based on their hard work and dedicated service. The employees of the Month are Agnes Bridges in the Finance Department and Greg Moody in the Fire Department.

FEBRUARY 17 HOA/POA MEETING TO FOCUS ON STORMWATER INFRASTRUCTURE UPDATES THE NEXT HOA/POA QUARTERLY MEETING will happen Saturday morning, February 17, 9:30-11 a.m., at Fayetteville City Hall in the Council Chambers. CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE The Fayetteville Police Department announced it is now accepting Citizens Police Academy (CPA) applications for spring 2024. The popular program will commence March 7 and conclude May 9, with all sessions taking place on Thursdays 6-8 p.m. There is no charge to participants, but completed

applications must be submitted to the Fayetteville Police Department Headquarters in person by Friday, February 9. Criminal background checks will be completed prior to finalizing the CPA participant roster. For more information and to download the CPA application, visit www.fayetteville-ga.

The Fayetteville City Council honored police officers Diana Snider and Jacob Collins during their January 18 meeting for recently receiving public safety awards from Governor Brian Kemp relating to their heroic rescue efforts during the January 2023 tornado in nearby Spalding County. GENE EXLINE WINS FFD’S FORD F-150 RAFFLE LOCAL TOWING COMPANY owner Gene Exline is the winner of the Fayetteville Fire Department’s first-ever Ford F-150 raffle, a fund raiser organized to raise money for Fayettevillebased The Eden Project and the Fire Department’s own fire prevention education programs.

Exline is a supporter of the Fayetteville Fire Department’s community outreach programs, so he said he wanted to show his support for this fund raiser as well. “I thought I would get in on it for $100,” he said. “When I won, it was a little shocking.”

PD AWARDED $27K TRAFFIC GRANT THE FAYETTEVILLE POLICE Department announced it has been awarded a major traffic enforcement grant in the amount of $27,383.44 from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) in Atlanta. The Fayetteville Police Department received the grant in recognition of its lifesaving work as the coordinating agency of GOHS’s Metro Atlanta Traffic Enforcement Network Traffic Enforcement Network. There are sixteen traffic enforcement networks

across the state that help enforce Georgia’s year-round safety belt, speed and impaired driving campaigns. “The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is working with our highway safety partners to reverse the increase in traffic deaths we have seen in the United States in the last two years and the goal of this project is to prevent crashes and save lives on our roads,” said Allen Poole, Director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. “We ask everyone to

join the mission of saving lives on our roads by driving the speed limit, wearing your seat belt, staying off the phone when driving, and never driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.” The Metro Atlanta Traffic Enforcement Network includes law enforcement agencies in seven counties, which include Fayette, Clayton, Henry, Dekalb, Fulton, Gwinnett, and Cobb.


CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS NOW STREAM LIVE ON YOUTUBE Fayetteville City Council meetings, which for years have been streamed live on Facebook, now stream live on the YouTube platform as well. The City’s IT team facilitated the live streaming of the January 18 City Council meeting, and it was a success. That video is now archived on the City’s YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/@fayetteville_ga. Live streams are also viewable during and after City Council meetings at www.youtube. com/@fayetteville_ga/streams. Trilith Guesthouse

The much-anticipated Trilith Guesthouse hotel opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, January 18, in the Town at Trilith neighborhood. The Mayor and City Council members along with several City staffers were on hand for the grand occasion, featuring tours of the facility and tastes of the food being offered throughout the hotel.
