2010 MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

2010 SEASON PREVIEW High expectations is the phrase surrounding the 2010 edition of the Bears as they celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the men’s soccer program at Mercer University. After a magical postseason surge that ended in a runner-up finish in the 2009 Atlantic Sun Championship, head coach Brad Ruzzo enters his third year at Mercer looking for even bigger things in 2010. With 15 letterwinners returning from last year’s 7-11-2 squad, coupled with the addition of 11 talented newcomers, Ruzzo has a very talented team at his disposal that is poised to make another run at the Atlantic Sun Championship. Senior Ian Cameron and juniors Phil Thoren, Ryan Young and Zachary Rall are the only four returning upperclassman on the roster and will be charged with molding the 2010 edition of the Bears into a cohesive unit to build upon last year’s success.

PREVIEW

Forwards

COACHES

The offensive end of the pitch was a vastly improved area last season and will look to be a strength for the Bears going into 2010. Coach Ruzzo will look to utilize a unique blend of experienced attacking players and promising newcomers to bolster an offensive unit that scored 25 goals last season, the most in a single-season since 2005.

BEARS

Sophomore Richie Edmondson, a 2009 A-Sun All-Tournament team selection, is the top returning option offensively for the Bears. Edmondson started 16 matches his freshman year and finished second on the team with eight points, on two goals and four assists. The Montego Bay, Jamaica native brought a new element to the Bears with his length and speed which will be an integral part of the Mercer offense in 2010.

REVIEW

All the pieces seem to be in place for Mercer to bring home its first Atlantic Sun Men’s Soccer Championship since 2001. Four of the top six scorers from last year’s squad are back in mix this season, including Cameron, Young, sophomore striker Richie Edmondson and sophomore midfielder Will Betts. The defensive side of the ball is in great shape looking forward to 2010 as well, welcoming back starting goalkeeper Brett Petricek and three-fourths of a back line that allowed only 29 goals in 2009.

Redshirt sophomore Matt Brazer, who appeared in 13 games last season will also be back to provide depth up front. Freshmen Joshua Ball, Jeffrey Clithero and Sam Johnson were all prolific high school goal scorers who look to break into Ruzzo’s lineup and provide depth this season.

The midfield personnel provided some impressive firepower last season, contributing 16 of the Bears 29 goals. With most of the unit from 2009 back, look for the “generals of the pitch” to have an even bigger presence in 2010. Ian Cameron, the lone senior on the squad from Glasgow, Scotland returns to the Bears lineup after starting 16 games in 2009. Cameron was the Bears leading scorer last season with 18 points, on seven goals and four assists, en route to a National Soccer Coaches

After starting the final six games of Mercer’s 2009 season, sophomore Bryson Jones will be counted on to step up his offensive production. In just six starts, Jones tallied three points on one goal and one assist.

2010 SEASON PREVIEW CONT’D

Association of America All-South Region third team selection and an Atlantic Sun All-Conference first team nomination. He will be expected to use his playmaking and technical ability to cause more problems for opposing defenses in 2010. Will Betts is one of the most complete players in the A-Sun after an outstanding freshman season. At 6-2, Betts uses a combination of strength and intelligence to command the middle of the pitch. Betts hit the field with some lofty praise after being named one of the top “100 Freshmen to Keep an Eye On” in 2009 according to collegesoccernews.com, but didn’t crumble under the expectations. The Brenham, Texas product appeared in all 20 matches, including 18 starts and finished with six points on two goals and two assists. Betts and Cameron join a host of returning midfielders including junior Zachary Rall and sophomores Stephan Wingo and Sharpe Sablon. Rall appeared in 16 games and scored one goal, Wingo started 14 games and scored two goals and Sablon appeared in nine games, including one start. Incoming freshman Taylor Krek, Brady O’Brien, Ryan King and Michael Lewis are all highly touted recruits who will make immediate contributions in the midfield rotation. Defense

Juniors Ryan Young and Phil Thoren along with sophomore Joey Heavner are all back for Ruzzo and are expected to take back their respective back line spots this season. Young provides the muscle at the back, using his 6-2 frame to overpower opponents and serve as a big target on set pieces. Young started 17 games in 2009 and was the top producer in the back with six points on two goals and two assists. Thoren, along with midfielder Ian Cameron, is one of the team leaders for the Bears and uses his maturity to dictate play from the back. The Vaxholm, Sweden native was hampered by an assortment of injuries last season, but still played in 14 matches, including 13 starts, finishing the season with three assists. Heavner is the wildcard of the group, using his high work rate to push up on offensive opportunities while always staying with his mark on defense. Heavner started 19 games last season and tallied three assists in his first year at Mercer. The final spot on Ruzzo’s defensive unit is up for grabs with the departure of senior center back Geoff Oliveria. The competition will most likely come down to sophomores Will Grey and Clemson transfer Josh Shutter. Grey showed his versatility during a strong freshman campaign in 2009, garnering starts on defense and in midfield. Grey appeared in 19 matches, started in all nine of the Bears A-Sun Conference contests and scored one goal last season. Shutter is a highly-touted transfer from ACC power Clemson University. The Sinking Spring, Pa. product appeared in 16 matches, including 12 starts as a true freshman. He is a center back by trade that possesses strength and skill in the air. Freshman newcomers Cole Mitchell and Vaughn Thomas will also add depth at the defensive end. Goalkeepers

As is the case with all Brad Ruzzo coached teams’, defense will without a doubt be the backbone of the team. With threefourths of the back line returning this season, Ruzzo has all the tools to clamp down on opposing teams’ offenses.

Few teams have the luxury of returning a seasoned and highly skilled netminder, but that is exactly what the Bears have in sophomore Brett Petricek. Petricek took command of the Mercer goalkeeper position last season and it was easy to see why Ruzzo entrusted the position to a true freshman. Petricek had a stellar 2009 campaign, starting in 19 matches while posting a 7-10-2 record. The Woodridge, Ill. native finished at or near the top of the A-Sun leaders in multiple statistical categories including a 1.29 goals against average (3rd), a .797 save percentage (T-1st), 98 saves (T-1st) and four shutouts (4th). For his efforts, Petricek was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman and All-Tournament teams.

8

Also back for the Bears is redshirt sophomore Daniel Van Valkinburgh. Van Valkinburgh gained some valuable experience last season starting one game and appearing in two others to give Mercer some quality depth at the position.

PREVIEW

Despite a 2-11-5 record in his first campaign, Ruzzo’s squad was in virtually every contest. Of their 11 loses, six came by a one-goal margin. In the 2008 Atlantic Sun Preseason Poll, the Bears’ were picked to finish last, but their sixth place finish in the standings earned them a spot in the A-Sun Championship. Ruzzo also mentored his first Atlantic Sun All-Conference first team selection Bolade Ogunmade and instilled a sense of purpose and excitement back into the Mercer men’s soccer program.

10

Ruzzo had his first chance to bring in his own players and implement his style of play in his second season with the Bears, and the returns were immediate. Mercer had its best season since 2005, concluding the campaign with a 7-11-2 overall record and a runner-up finish in the Atlantic Sun Championship. The Bears scored the most goals in 2009 (25) since 2005 and carried a goals against average (GAA) of 1.39, their lowest mark since 2006. Mercer also notched four conference wins during its 2009 campaign, the most since 2005. Under Ruzzo’s guidance, junior midfielder Ian Cameron and freshman goalkeeper Brett Petricek received conference and national recognition. Cameron was named an A-Sun All-Conference first team selection and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-South Region third team member, while Petricek was tabbed an A-Sun All-Freshman team honoree. Cameron, Petricek and sophomore striker Richie Edmondson were also all named to the 2009 A-Sun All-Tournament team after falling in the conference final. Not only did Coach Ruzzo generate success on the field, his squad produced in the classroom as well. Under his watch, the Bears were one of just 141 men’s soccer teams across all three NCAA divisions to earn the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award for posting a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher. A tireless worker who is a constant advocate of the game, Ruzzo stepped up his involvement in soccer in the southeast region. Upon his arrival at Mercer he founded and currently directs the Mercer Boys Soccer Academy, which is the organization that organizes and directs all Mercer men’s soccer camp activities. Starting in 2010, Ruzzo will be the new chair of the Atlantic Sun Men’s Soccer Coaches Association after being voted to the position by his peers. Ruzzo also began to work with the Region III Olympic Development Program as a staff member for premier players. Ruzzo came to Mercer from one of the Missouri Valley Conference’s elite programs, Bradley University. He spent the past eight seasons as the Braves’ top assistant and the last five as their associate head coach.

2010 MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

While at Bradley, Ruzzo and the Braves went to the NCAA Tournament four times, captured three Missouri Valley Conference regular-season championships and won the State Farm MVC Tournament title in 2007 while compiling a 101-54-25 (.631) record. The 2007 squad enjoyed the best postseason run in the program’s history, bowing out in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship. In 2003, Ruzzo claimed the title as one of the nation’s top assistant coaches by College Soccer News. Ruzzo’s tenure at Bradley saw many student-athletes earn positive recognition. The Braves produced eight All-Americans, six Major League Soccer SuperDraft selections, 37 All-MVC selections, two MVC Defensive Players of the Year, two MVC Freshmen of the Year and one MVC Player of the Year. During the same period, Ruzzo assisted Bradley in developing eight ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans and NSCAA Scholar All-Americans, 11 CoSIDA District V and NSCAA Region Scholar-Athletes and 25 Valley Scholar Athletes.

PREVIEW

Ruzzo also held the position of co-director for the Central Illinois Soccer Academy, which worked with more than 1,200 youth players throughout the year. In addition to his responsibilities as co-director, Ruzzo also served as the event coordinator for the program’s annual Chicagoland Golf Outing and a head coach for CISA’s U-17, U-18, U-19, and U-23 club teams since 2003.

BEARS REVIEW

Ruzzo and his wife, Tandis, have a son, Kellen, who is two years old.

COACHES

Prior to joining the staff at Bradley, Ruzzo starred at the University of Cincinnati, where he was a four-year letterwinner as a defenseman for the Bearcats. He started 77 games from 1995 to 1998 and earned a second-team All-Conference USA selection in 1998. As a senior, he served as the team captain, was chosen team MVP and led Cincinnati to the NCAA Tournament. In 1998, he helped the Bearcat defense pitch six shutouts and held opponents to a 0.89 goals-against average.

Haynes’ primary responsibility is working with and training Mercer’s goalkeepers. His efforts have shown immediate dividends in the rapid development of sophomore netminder Brett Petricek. -Mercer University and City of Macon Snapshots

THIS IS MERCE What distinguishes a good university from a great university extends far beyond the boundaries of its curriculum and its campus.

The competence and character of an institution’s graduates are, more often than not, the hallmarks by which its reputation is both earned and measured. As a private, co-educational institution, Mercer University has emerged as one of the premier universities in the Southeast and the nation. Mercer is truly a dynamic and comprehensive center of undergraduate, graduate and professional education. Mercer’s outstanding faculty take students beyond the rigors of academic programs to explore the challenges of reason, responsibility, compassion and character. Through learning, living and leading, Mercer students are prepared not only to confront, but also to embrace the challenges of their future. Under the leadership of prominent Georgia Baptist leader Jesse Mercer, Mercer University was founded in Penfield, Ga., in 1833 and later moved to Macon in 1871. From its humble beginnings as a small liberal arts college, Mercer now offers programs in 11 schools and colleges. Conveniently located in the middle of the state, Macon serves as the educational, medical, cultural and commercial hub of central Georgia. Located just one hour from Atlanta - one of

ER... the nation’s most popular international cities - and two hours from the Atlantic coast, Macon is easily accessible from two interstate highways - I-75 and I-16. Consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review among the nation’s leading universities, Mercer considers one of its strengths to be its superior faculty, who “teach from the heart.” At Mercer, students benefit from learning experiences guided by caring faculty, not teaching assistants found at many universities as is the case at many universities. The Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA recently named Mercer as a “highly selective” university, and The Princeton Review has placed Mercer among the Best 351 Colleges in North America. The University is comprised of the College of Liberal Arts, the Walter F. George School of Law, the School of Pharmacy and Health Services, the School of Medicine, the Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics, the School of Engineering, the James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology, the Tift College of Education, the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, the College of Continuing and Professional Studies, and the Townsend School of Music. The University also operates the Mercer University Press in Macon and the Mercer Engineering Research Center in Warner Robins. Mercer’s enrollment is nearly 8,100 students. While many students come from the Southeast, more than 38 states and 30 countries are represented among the student body. The average class size at Mercer is 21, with a student/faculty ratio of 13:1 - unusually low for a major university.

CAMPUS LIFE Even with its picturesque setting, the spirit of Mercer is not in the grandeur of its buildings, but in the graciousness of its people - a friendly, family-like community of faculty, staff and students who strive for excellence in all that they do. The University offers a wealth of fascinating experiences and activities both in and outside the classroom. From academic clubs and honor societies, to performing arts and special interest groups, to 16 national fraternities and sororities on campus, students can choose from more than 80 on-campus organizations to discover new talents and interests and to gain important leadership skills they will need for life after college.

RESIDENCE LIFE The benefits of campus living are numerous - the development l off life-long friendships, a sense of community, enhancing campus involvement and higher academic performance. For many new students, this is the first time they have lived away from home, and the community that develops on campus and in residence halls becomes a second family. All freshman and sophomores (first-year and/or transfer students) are required to live on campus, with the exception of married students, students above the age of 21, students with children and/or students who live at home with a parent or guardian within reasonable commuting distance. In each of Mercer’s residence halls, safety comes first and foremost. The exterior doors are locked at all times, and students use their identification cards to gain access into their residence hall.

MERCER UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT WILLIAM D. UNDERWOOD

President Underwood has led Mercer during a period of dynamic growth and development for the University. Since his arrival as Mercer’s 18th President in 2006, enrollment has increased by approximately 15 percent to more than 8,000 students. Mercer has launched a second medical school campus (in Savannah), initiated a master’s-level physician assistant program, announced a doctorallevel program in physical therapy that will begin in 2010, and added Ph.D. programs in Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction, and Nursing. Reflecting an increased emphasis on research, Mercer will meet the criteria established by the Carnegie Foundation for reclassification as a research-doctoral university during the 2009-10 academic year. Over the past three years, the number of Ph.D. students has increased from fewer than 25 to approximately 200, while the amount of externally funded research expenditures has grown to nearly $25 million. In addition to increased levels of funding from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, Mercer scientists have for the first time been funded as eminent cancer scientists by the Georgia Cancer Coalition, while other Mercer scientists are now receiving funding to support their research through the Georgia Research Alliance. The University has intensified its longstanding commitment to service-learning and community engagement under President Underwood’s leadership. During the spring of 2009, Mercer announced a $5 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to support continued revitaliza-

tion of the College Hill Corridor between campus and downtown Macon. The groundbreaking Mercer On Mission program, launched in 2007, has been recognized by the Clinton Global Initiative as “an exemplary approach to addressing a specific global challenge.” Mercer earned the highest federal recognition for community engagement by the Corporation for National and Community Service in 2009, and in 2008 became the only university in Georgia to receive the Carnegie Foundation’s designation for “Curricular Engagement and Outreach and Partnerships.” Prior to joining Mercer, President Underwood served at Baylor University as Interim President and held the prestigious Leon Jaworski Chair at the Baylor School of Law. President Underwood is an accomplished educator and scholar. He was designated a Master Teacher at Baylor in recognition of extraordinary classroom teaching over an extended period. He is an elected member of the American Law Institute and the American Bar Foundation. President Underwood was awarded the J.D. degree summa cum laude by the University of Illinois College of Law in 1985, where he graduated as class salutatorian and was an editor of the University of Illinois Law Review. Following graduation, he clerked for the Honorable Sam D. Johnson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, prior to practicing law for several years with a large law firm in Dallas. He also holds an undergraduate degree from Oklahoma Baptist University, where he met his spouse, Lesli. They have two children, Jessica and William.

Strength and Conditioning The strength and conditioning program at Mercer has three primary goals. These goals are to maximize athleticism, minimize injuries and increase mental/physical toughness. The way this is accomplished is by primarily utilizing ground based, multi-joint, triple extension, explosive exercises. Athletes will perform exercises of all types but focus is put on three main exercise styles: Olympic lifting, power lifting and plyometrics. The goal is to try and replicate the movements, velocities and forces that are experienced during competition of the athlete's sport. Served by a professional full-time strength and conditioning coach as well as an assistant coach, Mercer Athletics provides a full range of weight training and exercise equipment to assist Mercer’s approximately 226 student-athletes in reaching their athletic potential through strength training and conditioning. Easily accessible from anywhere in the University Center, the equipment includes the following: • three top of the line power lift full racks • over 3,000 pounds of plates • a line of variable resistant machines • three sets of Iron Grip dumbbells • five free standing adjustable benches
