2012 Mercer Men’s Soccer Media Guide

2012 SEASON The 2012 version of the Mercer men’s soccer team could be poised to reach new heights, according to head coach Brad Ruzzo. With a savvy group of returning letterwinners that includes nine starters from last season’s 9-8-3 squad, Ruzzo feels that this team has the potential to be one of the best to ever step foot onto Bear Field. “This year’s team has the most potential since my arrival in 2008 because of the experience and the depth that we return,” said Ruzzo. “With seven seniors and 9 of 11 starters back, this group has experienced back-to-back winning seasons, a conference championship appearance and conference tournament berths each of the last four years. This group has been building up the foundation for years and I believe that we have all the important pieces in place to compete at a high level if we stay healthy.” The 2011 edition of the Bears was a very young and talented group that featured just two seniors, but the group matured and gelled into a team that showed unlimited potential and promise. The Orange and Black finished last season with their fourthstraight appearance in the Atlantic Sun Championship under Ruzzo before losing in the semi-finals to eventual tournament champion FGCU. Having lost just four letterwinners from last year’s team, the 2012 Bears welcome 12 talented newcomers into the fold and look poised and positioned to make a serious run at their first A-Sun Championship since 2001. Schedule

bears

Residing in one of the best mid-major soccer conferences in the country, Mercer’s Atlantic Sun line-up poses even more challenges going into 2012. The A-Sun finished in the top-20 of the final NCAA RPI Conference Rankings for the second year in a row, marking the first time since 1999 that the A-Sun has finished amongst the top-20 conferences in back-toback seasons. Highlighting the Bears league slate this season are home tilts against the newest member of the conference, Northern Kentucky, on Oct. 25 and a re-match against defending A-Sun Champion FGCU, on Nov. 3

coaches

The Orange and Black face a tough non-conference schedule that features three NCAA Tournament teams (UAB, Georgia State and USF) and a road match-up with NC State, who Mercer played to a 1-1 draw in its last meeting with the Wolfpack back in 2008.

preview

Year in and year out the Bears continue to face a challenging schedule under head coach Brad Ruzzo. Mercer’s 2012 slate features more of the same, with seven top-100 RPI teams and four 2011 NCAA Tournament participants highlighting a premier schedule.

review

Goalkeepers

True freshmen Garrett Franklin and Justin Crozier add depth and look to battle it out for backup duties behind Ranjitsingh.

Despite finishing last season with 25 goals, Mercer’s third-straight season of 25 or more goals, Ruzzo feels this year’s group of forwards has the potential to be a part of the most explosive offensive unit in his tenure. The Bears feature an intriguing mix of solid returning strikers and talented newcomers up top that should give opposing defenses fits all season long. Junior Ehjayson Henry made a big splash in his first season at Mercer after transferring in from Penn State. The Harris Village, Saint Kitts native finished second on the team with 11 points on five goals and one assist. His five goals ranked tied for first on the team and tied for ninth in the A-Sun Conference. Henry will be counted on for similar production in 2012, as he projects to be the starting forward for the Bears on this year’s squad. MERCERBEARS.com

One area Coach Ruzzo solidified last season was in-between the posts thanks to the play of returning sophomore starter Greg Ranjitsingh. Ranjitsingh set new program records with a 1.11 goals against average and seven shutouts on his way to being the only goalkeeper named to the A-Sun All-Freshman team.

2012 Mercer Men’s Soccer Media Guide

2012 SEASON PREVIEW CONT. In addition to Henry, redshirt junior Bryson Jones also returns to the fold for Mercer up front. Jones appeared in 10 games last season and registered his second collegiate goal in a 3-1 home win over VMI. Incoming freshman Matt Martins, Jason Sayers and Juan Jose Morales all come in with high marks out of the high school ranks and will be counted on for key minutes in Ruzzo’s forward rotation. Midfielders If Coach Ruzzo had to choose one area of the field that he feels will without doubt be the team’s strength going into 2012, it’s the Orange and Black’s midfield unit. The Bears return three starters and have plenty of capable bodies to fill in the final two spots. Junior Will Betts headlines the trio of returning starters at his defensive midfield position after a breakout 2011 season. Betts led the team with a career-best 12 points and finished tied for first on the squad with five goals on his way to being named the 2011 A-Sun Conference Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year and voted onto the NSCAA Scholar All-South Region second team. Not to be outdone is sophomore center midfielder Carl-Oscar Andersson and the body of work he put together as a true freshman last season. Mercer’s unofficial “field general”, Andersson finished tied for fifth on the team with eight points on one goal and six assists to earn A-Sun All-Freshman team honors.

Junior Ryan King is the final returning midfielder from last year’s squad and is known by his opponents for his high motor and nose for the back of the net. The Norcross, Ga. native suffered no sophomore slump in 2011, upping his goal scoring productivity from three tallies as a freshman to four goals last season. Senior Richie Edmondson is slated to move into one of the remaining two midfield spots despite being utilized as a forward over his first three years in Macon. Edmondson scored one goal and added an assist in 2011, but it was his play in the wide midfield area during the Bears spring season that has Ruzzo confident in the position change. Senior Sharpe Sablon and redshirt sophomore Michael Lewis also return to the fold in 2012 and will be in the mix for the fifth and final midfield position. Sablon played in a career-high 14 games, including two starts, last season while Lewis saw his first collegiate action with three appearances in 2011. Newcomers Reid Folkard, Matt Moses, Will Jones, Michka Tosan and David Murtuagh also figure into the mix in the midfield rotation going into 2011. Defense As with every team coached by Coach Ruzzo, defense is expected to be the heart and soul of the squad. This 2012 edition of the Orange and Black is no different, with essentially all four starters returning to Macon under Ruzzo’s tutelage. The Bears return two of the most decorated players in the A-Sun Conference on their back line in senior center back Josh Shutter and senior outside back Joey Heavner. Shutter tallied 10 points on three goals and four assists in 2011 and showed such dominance in the middle of the Mercer defense that he was rewarded with an A-Sun All-Conference first team selection. Heavner is transitioning back into his natural role as a right back after playing last season in the midfield. What a season 2011 was for Heavner, who set a career-high with nine points on one goal and seven assists and was named to the A-Sun AllConference second team, A-Sun All-Tournament team and NSCAA Scholar All-South Region honorable mention group Sophomore Ashani Samuels and junior Brady O’Brien return to fill out the Mercer back line and provide both length and speed to the unit. Samuels split his freshman season as a midfielder and center back, tallying two goals and a A-Sun AllFreshman team selection. O’Brien appeared in 17 games in 2011 and is counted upon for his ability to guard the opposing teams’ best player on the outside. Not to be forgotten is junior super sub Cole Mitchell. Mitchell appeared in 17 games last season as both a midfielder and defender and has the hard nosed attitude that Coach Ruzzo looks for in a player. Redshirt junior Vaughn Thomas, who made one appearance in 2011, joins newcomers Mark Riggins and Ryan Kirkland looking to vie for playing time in 2012. MERCERBEARS.com

BRAD RUZZO

FIFTH SEASON AT MERCER CINCINNATI ‘99

Now entering his fifth season at Mercer, it is apparent head coach Brad Ruzzo has instilled a new energy and enthusiasm back into the Bears men’s soccer program with his ability to motivate, teach and recruit at the highest level. A man with a proven track record of success, Ruzzo has a clear vision for building a championship program at Mercer based on integrity, character and hard work. In his first four seasons at Mercer, Ruzzo has led the Bears to four-straight Atlantic Sun Conference Championship appearances and produced 19 wins over the past two years - the most wins in consecutive seasons since 2004-05.

The former associate head coach at Bradley University and assistant coach at Xavier University, Ruzzo was announced as the ninth head coach in school history on June 24, 2008. A former center back during his playing days at the University of Cincinnati, Ruzzo has brought a renewed passion to the men’s soccer program at Mercer and the results have been very clear over his first four seasons on the job. Ruzzo has taken a program that missed the A-Sun Conference Championship in 2007 to one of the elite squads in the southeast region. 2011 brought yet another season of success under Ruzzo, as the squad finished with a 9-8-3 overall record and a 3-3-2 A-Sun Conference mark. Mercer made it four years in a row of exceeding preseason expectations put forth by the other head coaches in the A-Sun. After being picked to finish fifth in the A-Sun Preseason Coaches’ poll, the Bears concluded league play with a fourth-place finish. Despite falling in the semi-finals of the A-Sun Conference Championship to eventual champion FGCU, the Orange and Black secured back-to-back campaigns with a winning record for the first time since the 2001 and 2002 seasons. Mercer was recognized for its team success by having five players collect A-Sun postseason awards. Junior Josh Shutter was voted onto the A-Sun All-Conference first team, classmate Joey Heavner landed a spot on the second team and freshmen Ashani Samuels, CarlOscar Andersson and Greg Ranjitsingh were all named to the All-Freshman squad. Juniors Will Betts and Heavner also picked up multiple academic honors to compliment the Bears’ athletic achievements on the season. Betts was voted the inaugural A-Sun Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was named to the Capital One Academic All-District IV first team and NSCAA Scholar All-South Region second team while Heavner earned selections to the A-Sun Academic All-Conference team and the NSCAA Scholar All-South Region honorable mention squad. The 2010 edition of the Bears ended up with a 10-6-1 overall record and a 5-4-0 mark in A-Sun play. The Orange and Black exceeded expectations in 2010 finishing third in the conference standings after being picked to finish fifth in the A-Sun Preseason Coaches’ poll. Mercer reached double-digits in total wins and won at least five conference matches for the first time since 2004. The Bears scored the most goals in 2010 (27) since 2005 and carried a goals against average (GAA) of 1.15, which was the 93rd lowest in the country. The Orange and Black’s banner season also produced two firsts in the 40-year history of the program. Under Ruzzo’s guidance, the Bears defeated their first-ever ranked team, when they downed then No. 29 ranked UAB 1-0, and earned their first-ever regional ranking when they appeared as the No. 10 team in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America South Regional Poll. With all the success the team experienced in 2010, a number of individuals received personal recognition as well. Six Bears earned A-Sun All-Conference awards with senior Ian Cameron and sophomores Richie Edmondson, Josh Shutter and Brett Petricek earning second team honors while Ryan King and Taylor Krek were voted onto the AllFreshman team. Ruzzo had his first chance to bring in his own players and implement his style of play in his second season with the Bears, and the returns were immediate. Mercer concluded the campaign with a 7-11-2 overall record and a runner-up finish in the Atlantic Sun Championship. Under Ruzzo’s guidance, junior midfielder Ian Cameron and freshman goalkeeper Brett Petricek received conference and national recognition. Cameron was named an A-Sun All-Conference first team selection and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-South Region third team member, while Petricek was tabbed an A-Sun All-Freshman team honoree. Cameron, Petricek, senior forward Arkenson Neckles and sophomore striker Richie Edmondson were also all named to the 2009 A-Sun All-Tournament team after falling in the conference final. MERCERBEARS.com

2012 Mercer Men’s Soccer Media Guide Not only did Coach Ruzzo generate success on the field, his squad produced in the classroom as well. Under his watch, the Bears were one of just 141 men’s soccer teams across all three NCAA divisions to earn the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award for posting a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Despite a 2-11-5 record in his first campaign, Ruzzo’s squad was in virtually every contest. Of their 11 loses, six came by a one-goal margin. In the 2008 Atlantic Sun Preseason Poll, the Bears’ were picked to finish last, but their sixth place finish in the standings earned them a spot in the A-Sun Championship. Ruzzo also mentored his first Atlantic Sun AllConference first team selection Bolade Ogunmade and instilled a sense of purpose and excitement back into the Mercer men’s soccer program. A tireless worker who is a constant advocate of the game, Ruzzo stepped up his involvement in soccer in the southeast region. Upon his arrival at Mercer he founded and currently directs the Mercer Boys Soccer Academy, which is the organization that organizes and directs all Mercer men’s soccer camp activities. Ruzzo also began to work with the Region III Olympic Development Program as a staff member for premier players. Ruzzo came to Mercer from one of the Missouri Valley Conference’s elite programs, Bradley University. He spent the past eight seasons as the Braves’ associate head coach.

preview

While at Bradley, Ruzzo and the Braves went to the NCAA Tournament four times, captured three Missouri Valley Conference regular-season championships and won the State Farm MVC Tournament title in 2007 while compiling a 101-54-25 (.631) record. The 2007 squad enjoyed the best postseason run in the program’s history, bowing out in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship. In 2003, Ruzzo claimed the title as one of the nation’s top assistant coaches by College Soccer News.

Ruzzo and his wife, Tandis, have a son, Kellen, who is four years old.

review

Prior to joining the staff at Bradley, Ruzzo starred at the University of Cincinnati, where he was a four-year letter-winner as a defenseman for the Bearcats. He started 77 games from 1995 to 1998 and earned a second-team All-Conference USA selection in 1998. As a senior, he served as the team captain, was chosen team MVP and led Cincinnati to its first-ever NCAA Tournament apperance. In 1998, he helped the Bearcat defense pitch six shutouts and held opponents to a 0.89 goals-against average.

bears

Ruzzo also held the position of co-director for the Central Illinois Soccer Academy, which worked with more than 1,200 youth players throughout the year. In addition to his responsibilities as co-director, Ruzzo also served as the event coordinator for the program’s annual Chicagoland Golf Outing and a head coach for CISA’s U-17, U-18, U-19, and U-23 club teams since 2003.

coaches

Ruzzo’s tenure at Bradley saw many student-athletes earn positive recognition. The Braves produced eight All-Americans, six Major League Soccer SuperDraft selections, 37 All-MVC selections, two MVC Defensive Players of the Year, two MVC Freshmen of the Year and one MVC Player of the Year. During the same period, Ruzzo assisted Bradley in developing eight ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans and NSCAA Scholar All-Americans, 11 CoSIDA District V and NSCAA Region Scholar-Athletes and 25 Valley Scholar Athletes.

-Mercer University and City of Macon Snapshots

THIS IS MERCE What distinguishes a good university from a great university extends far beyond the boundaries of its curriculum and its campus.

The competence and character of an institution’s graduates are, more often than not, the hallmarks by which its reputation is both earned and measured. As a private, co-educational institution, Mercer University has emerged as one of the premier universities in the Southeast and the nation. Mercer is truly a dynamic and comprehensive center of undergraduate, graduate and professional education. Mercer’s outstanding faculty take students beyond the rigors of academic programs to explore the challenges of reason, responsibility, compassion and character. Through learning, living and leading, Mercer students are prepared not only to confront, but also to embrace the challenges of their future. Under the leadership of prominent Georgia Baptist leader Jesse Mercer, Mercer University was founded in Penfield, Ga., in 1833 and later moved to Macon in 1871. From its humble beginnings as a small liberal arts college, Mercer now offers programs in 11 schools and colleges. Conveniently located in the middle of the state, Macon serves as the educational, medical, cultural and commercial hub of central Georgia. Located just one hour from Atlanta - one of

ER... the nation’s most popular international cities - and two hours from the Atlantic coast, Macon is easily accessible from two interstate highways - I-75 and I-16. Consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review among the nation’s leading universities, Mercer considers one of its strengths to be its superior faculty, who “teach from the heart.” At Mercer, students benefit from learning experiences guided by caring faculty, not teaching assistants found at many universities as is the case at many universities. The Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA recently named Mercer as a “highly selective” university, and The Princeton Review has placed Mercer among the Best 351 Colleges in North America. The University is comprised of the College of Liberal Arts, the Walter F. George School of Law, the School of Pharmacy and Health Services, the School of Medicine, the Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics, the School of Engineering, the James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology, the Tift College of Education, the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, the College of Continuing and Professional Studies, and the Townsend School of Music. The University also operates the Mercer University Press in Macon and the Mercer Engineering Research Center in Warner Robins. Mercer’s enrollment is nearly 8,100 students. While many students come from the Southeast, more than 38 states and 30 countries are represented among the student body. The average class size at Mercer is 21, with a student/faculty ratio of 13:1 - unusually low for a major university.

CAMPUS LIFE Even with its picturesque setting, the spirit of Mercer is not in the grandeur of its buildings, but in the graciousness of its people - a friendly, family-like community of faculty, staff and students who strive for excellence in all that they do. The University offers a wealth of fascinating experiences and activities both in and outside the classroom. From academic clubs and honor societies, to performing arts and special interest groups, to 16 national fraternities and sororities on campus, students can choose from more than 80 on-campus organizations to discover new talents and interests and to gain important leadership skills they will need for life after college.

RESIDENCE LIFE The benefits of campus living are numerous - the development l off life-long friendships, a sense of community, enhancing campus involvement and higher academic performance. For many new students, this is the first time they have lived away from home, and the community that develops on campus and in residence halls becomes a second family. All freshman and sophomores (first-year and/or transfer students) are required to live on campus, with the exception of married students, students above the age of 21, students with children and/or students who live at home with a parent or guardian within reasonable commuting distance. In each of Mercer’s residence halls, safety comes first and foremost. The exterior doors are locked at all times, and students use their identification cards to gain access into their residence hall.

MERCER UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT WILLIAM D. UNDERWOOD

Reflecting an increased emphasis on research, Mercer will meet the criteria established by the Carnegie Foundation for reclassification as a research-doctoral university during the 2009-10 academic year. Over the past three years, the number of Ph.D. students has increased from fewer than 25 to approximately 200, while the amount of externally funded research expenditures has grown to nearly $25 million. In addition to increased levels of funding from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, Mercer scientists have for the first time been funded as eminent cancer scientists by the Georgia Cancer Coalition, while other Mercer scientists are now receiving funding to support their research through the Georgia Research Alliance. The University has intensified its longstanding commitment to service-learning and community engagement under President Underwood’s leadership. During the spring of 2009, Mercer announced a $5 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to support continued revitaliza-

tion of the College Hill Corridor between campus and downtown Macon. The groundbreaking Mercer On Mission program, launched in 2007, has been recognized by the Clinton Global Initiative as “an exemplary approach to addressing a specific global challenge.” Mercer earned the highest federal recognition for community engagement by the Corporation for National and Community Service in 2009, and in 2008 became the only university in Georgia to receive the Carnegie Foundation’s designation for “Curricular Engagement and Outreach and Partnerships.” Prior to joining Mercer, President Underwood served at Baylor University as Interim President and held the prestigious Leon Jaworski Chair at the Baylor School of Law. President Underwood is an accomplished educator and scholar. He was designated a Master Teacher at Baylor in recognition of extraordinary classroom teaching over an extended period. He is an elected member of the American Law Institute and the American Bar Foundation. President Underwood was awarded the J.D. degree summa cum laude by the University of Illinois College of Law in 1985, where he graduated as class salutatorian and was an editor of the University of Illinois Law Review. Following graduation, he clerked for the Honorable Sam D. Johnson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, prior to practicing law for several years with a large law firm in Dallas. He also holds an undergraduate degree from Oklahoma Baptist University, where he met his spouse, Lesli. They have two children, Jessica and William.

The Mercer Athletic Foundation’s goal is to enhance and grow the ‘athletic experience’ for the student-athletes who follow in the footsteps of those who, like myself, were fortunate enough to represent the Orange & Black in intercollegiate athletics competition. Your gifts and contributions to the MAF are what make it possible for this to happen, so please consider how you can ‘Be the Bear’ today!”

The experiences I gained as a Mercer student and athlete have proven invaluable in both my personal and professional life. Mercer offers its students an education - both on and off the field - that is as functional as it is respected in today’s world. A Mercer degree tells people that you have been a part of something special.

Strength and Conditioning The strength and conditioning program at Mercer has three primary goals. These goals are to maximize athleticism, minimize injuries and increase mental/physical toughness. The way this is accomplished is by primarily utilizing ground based, multi-joint, triple extension, explosive exercises. Athletes will perform exercises of all types but focus is put on three main exercise styles: Olympic lifting, power lifting and plyometrics. The goal is to try and replicate the movements, velocities and forces that are experienced during competition of the athlete's sport. Served by a professional full-time strength and conditioning coach as well as an assistant coach, Mercer Athletics provides a full range of weight training and exercise equipment to assist Mercer’s approximately 226 student-athletes in reaching their athletic potential through strength training and conditioning. Easily accessible from anywhere in the University Center, the equipment includes the following: • three top of the line power lift full racks • over 3,000 pounds of plates • a line of variable resistant machines • three sets of Iron Grip dumbbells • five free standing adjustable benches
