2013 Mercer Women’s Soccer Media Guide

2013 SEASON PREVIEW When head coach Tony Economopoulos was hired to be the new head man of the Mercer women’s soccer program it signified the beginning of a new era. In his first year at the helm of the program Economopoulos inherited a fairly young, but talented roster to mold for the upcoming 2012 campaign. With uncertainty abound, all Economopoulos did was lead Mercer to a program record 13 wins in 2012 and its fifth appearance in the Atlantic Sun Tournament title game in the last six seasons. With nine starters returning, including A-Sun All-Conference goalkeeper Maggie Cropp and several key pieces on the offensive side of the ball, Economopoulos sees no reason why this 2013 edition of the Bears shouldn’t equal or even surpass the success they experienced in 2012. “We had a great year last season, but ultimately fell just short of our ultimate team goal of winning the A-Sun Tournament,” said Economopoulos. “We return almost everyone back from last year’s squad, I am very excited to see what 2013 has to offer and there is no reason why we can’t take the next step this year and play in the NCAA Tournament.” Having lost just five letterwinners from last year’s team, the 2013 Bears welcome nine talented newcomers into the fold and look poised and positioned to make a serious run at their second A-Sun Championship in program history.

Twelve home games and matches against four teams that participated in last year’s NCAA Tournament highlight a dynamic 2013 Mercer women’s soccer schedule put together by Economopoulos.

bears

Once the Bears open their 2013 season at Alabama A&M on August 24, they will kick-off a tough 10-game non-conference portion of their schedule. Among the notable contests is a road tilt at Georgia on August 30 and a home game against Tennessee, who finished 2012 ranked No. 18 in the RPI, on September 8.

coaches

The Orange and Black face a challenging 19-game schedule in 2013 that includes a brutal nine-game A-Sun Conference slate and also features household names such as SEC members Georgia, Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee.

Schedule

Mercer also takes on Florida Gulf Coast in a rematch of the 2012 A-Sun Tournament title game at home on Bear Field on October 18. review

Goalkeepers

Forwards Offense came early and often for Mercer last year as it piled up 40 goals in 2012, which was tops in the A-Sun Conference and the second-most in a single-season in program history. Forwards accounted for 18 of those goals and all three starting forwards from last years squad (junior Tess Patton, senior Nadja Kolliesuah and junior Washida Blackman) are back in the fold for 2013. MERCERBEARS.com

mercer

Senior Nikki Atkinson is also a viable option in net as she started in nine games in 2012 and has appeared in 32 games over her first three years in Macon. Freshman Cristina Mursuli will also be vying for time in net after a solid career at William Fremd.

records

One area Coach Economopoulos received surprising production from in 2012 is in net thanks to the emergence of Maggie Cropp. As a true freshman last season, Cropp appeared in 18 games, including 12 starts, and posted a 9-3-2 overall record. She also posted a 0.29 goals against average and a .929 save percentage, both of which finished tops amongst all goalkeepers across the country. Her 0.29 goals against average last season was the lowest in program history and the second-lowest in A-Sun Conference history.

2013 Mercer Women’s Soccer Media Guide

2013 SEASON PREVIEW CONT. Patton transferred to Mercer from Auburn right at the start of the 2012 campaign and provided Coach Economopoulos with a huge spark offensively due to her striking ability. The Gainesville, Ga. native tallied 14 points on six goals and two assists and capped her first season with Mercer by being named to the A-Sun All-Conference second team. Kolliesuah served as a facilitator and flourished in Coach Economopoulos’ new offensive system. The Columbus, Ohio native appeared in all 21 games in 2012, including 19 starts, and registered seven points on one goal and five assists. Blackman served as the point forward of Mercer’s dynamic 2012 offense. One of only two Bears to appear and start in all 21 games in 2012, Blackman collected seven points on the strength of two goals and three assists. In addition to the starters, senior Casey Barrett, junior MacKenzie Stewart and sophomore Sydney Brogden all provide significant firepower off the bench at the forward position. Barrett appeared in all 21 games in 2012 and finished fourth on the team with 11 points on four goals and three assists. Stewart appeared in 20 games and collected five points on two goals and one assist while Brogden appeared in 14 games as a true freshman and finished fifth on the team with three goals. Redshirt freshman Maddie Clark and true freshmen Annie Barrett and Katelyn Dimopoulos also serve as viable options up top and will look to contribute to the Bears offense in 2013. Midfielders

bears

coaches

preview

If there is one question mark heading into the 2013 campaign on Coach Economopoulos’ team, its the midfield personel. Despite bringing back the Bears most productive offensive player from last season, in junior Lauren Gassie, several holes remain after the departure of seniors Danielle Hesse and Patricia-Anne Upson. Gassie had a breakout 2012 campaign as she spearheaded a Mercer offense that was tops in the A-Sun Conference a year ago. A Winter Park, Fla. native, Gassie tallied a team-high 19 points on six goals and seven assists last season and was rewarded by being voted onto the A-Sun Conference All-Academic team last season and was voted onto the Preseason All-Atlantic Sun team in anticipation of the 2013 season. More than likely filling one of the starting roles left by Upson and Hesse is Memphis transfer Sarah Daane. Daane, who is a sophomore, appeared in 14 games and scored three goals as a redshirt freshman at Memphis last season and will be counted on for her offensive creativity and defensive intensity for the Bears this season. Junior Brianna Stampler and senior Sadie Curry also return to the fold in 2013 and will be in the mix for the final midfield position. Stampler played in all 21 games last season and registered five points on two goals and one assist while Curry saw in a career-best 14 contests and scored her first collegiate goal in 2012. Newcomers Haleigh Svede and Abbey Reddig also figure into the mix in the midfield rotation going into 2013.

Defense They say that sometimes in sports a teams’ best offense is their defense and that was the case for Mercer last season as opponents simply couldn’t find the back of the net against the Bears. Mercer allowed only 13 goals in all of 2012, which is the second-fewest in Mercer history and the fifth-fewest in A-Sun Conference history while also recording 11 shutouts. The Bears 2013 defensive unit has already been dealt a tough blow as senior leader Devon Fry will miss the entire season with a knee injury, but Mercer returns several experienced defenders from last year’s squad who will look to pick up the slack. Juniors Rachel Buffalo and Stephanie Giangiuli both return as entrenched starters at center back and outside back, respectively. Buffalo appeared in 20 games, including 19 starts, in 2012 and scored her first collegiate goal on her way to being named to the A-Sun All-Tournament team. Giangiuli appeared in all 21 games last season and provides versatility on the outside as she led all Mercer defenders with nine shots in 2012. Senior Jordan Sink and junior Kristen Hagaman essentially split time at the other outside back position in 2012 and both provide valuable experience as Sink has appeared in 51 career games with Hagaman seeing action in 40 contests. Both will be counted on to contribute to Mercer’s backline in 2013 at both outside back and center back. Junior Taylor Dias (15 games played in 2012), redshirt freshman Kim Murphy and true freshmen Kaitlyn McBride and Corinne Wooten also serve as legitimate players for playing time in 2013 as well. “Coach Economopoulos was an exceptional candidate for the position,” Cole said. “He has a dynamic background and a passion for the game that will serve our student-athletes well. His coaching style, leadership and regional and national coaching accomplishments are a perfect fit for our university.” Economopoulos certainly began his tenure in Macon with a bang in 2012, helping Mercer to a 13-5-3 overall record and a runner-up finish in the 2012 Atlantic Sun Championship. Under his leadership, the Bears set a new program record for most wins in a single-season and advanced to the A-Sun Championship title game for the fifth time in the last six seasons. His squad led the A-Sun Conference in goals scored (40), goals allowed (13) and shutouts (11), all three of which rank as the second-best single-season totals in program history. Economopoulos saw a number of his players receive conference awards for their efforts, including junior Devon Fry and senior Patricia-Anne Upson who were named A-Sun All-Conference first team members. Freshman Maggie Cropp and sophomore Tess Patton took home A-Sun All-Conference second team honors while Upson, senior Danielle Hesse and sophomore Lauren Gassie were voted onto the A-Sun All-Academic team. Prior to his arrival at Mercer, Economopoulos spent three years at Georgia Southwestern, where he helped build the Hurricanes into an up-and-coming soccer program. In his tenure at GSW, he was responsible for all facets of the program. His 2010 team set the program record for most conference wins in school history. His final season saw GSW also set a program record for most wins over a three-year span. His 2011 team at GSW was a recipient of both a Team Academic Award and an Ethics Sportsmanship Silver Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Each were firsts in the program’s history. The new Mercer appointment is the fifth coaching position Economopoulos has held over an 11-year career in college soccer. Before taking over at Georgia Southwestern, Economopoulos was at Big-12 power, Oklahoma State where he served as a women’s assistant for two seasons (2007-08). During his time in Stillwater, he was a part of two NCAA Tournament teams and helped earn a program-high No. 7 national ranking in 2008. The Cowgirls picked up their first-ever conference regular season championship in 2008 as he helped mentor and train four All-Big 12 Conference players, including three first teamers. The 2008 team also led the nation in goals per game and was third overall in goals scored (74). “I am thrilled to be the new head coach at Mercer University,” Economopoulos said. “I would like to thank Jim Cole and Sybil Blalock for granting me this wonderful opportunity. It is evident to me that Mercer is committed to competing and winning on the field as well as in the classroom.”

“I’d also like to thank Dr. Kendall Blanchard and Jaclyn Donovan for the opportunity to represent GSW the past three years,” Economopoulos said. “My time there was extremely rewarding and I am honored to have been a part of a terrific soccer program with outstanding student-athletes.” Economopoulos takes over for Grant Serafy, who established the Mercer program as one of the best in the Atlantic Sun. The Bears have appeared in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship game in four of the last five seasons and went to the NCAA Women’s College Cup in 2010. This past season, the Bears went 10-8-2, marking the fourth time in five years that the team has compiled double-digit wins. Before his time at Oklahoma State, Economopoulos was the men’s top assistant coach at Bowling Green State University for four seasons. With the Falcons, he served as recruiting coordinator and was the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Great Lakes Regional Chair. In 2004, he briefly served as the interim head coach at Bowling Green and helped the Falcons earn recognition as one of the most improved Division I soccer teams in the country.

Economopoulos and his wife, Holly, have two children Dominic (6) and Alexa (4).

bears

A native of Oklahoma City, Economopoulos was a two-sport star in soccer and football at Putnam City North High School. He played his collegiate soccer at Oklahoma City University and helped lead the Stars to a Sooner Athletic Conference championship. Economopoulos also played semi-professionally in the USISL with the Oklahoma City Slickers and the Oklahoma City Warriors.

coaches

Economopoulos also currently serves on the Region III Olympic Development Program as a staff coach. He possesses a National “B” Coaching License from the United States Soccer Federation and has been a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America since 2001.

preview

Economopoulos made his collegiate coaching debut in 2001, as an assistant with the men’s team at Western Illinois University. He served as the goalkeeper coach and the recruiting coordinator, and in 2002 his efforts were rewarded as he was nominated for the AFLAC Insurance National Assistant Coach of the Year Award.

Saylor’s stay at Eastern Kentucky was marked with success, as his defenses allowed less than 1.5 goals per game in each of his two seasons. Saylor’s presence at Mercer was immediately felt due to the emergence of freshman goalkeeper Maggie Cropp. Under Saylor’s guidance, Cropp anchored a Mercer defense that allowed the fewest goals in the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2012 and the second-fewest goals in a single-season in Mercer program history. Cropp finished the 2012 campaign leading the nation in both goals against average (0.29) and save percentage (.923) and was rewarded by being named to the A-Sun All-Conference second team and A-Sun AllFreshman Team.

“Brenton is a great addition to our staff,” head coach Tony Economopoulos said. “He brings a high level of experience with him after coaching with several DI programs in the region.”

Prior to his stint with the Colonels, Saylor was a graduate assistant coach on the women’s soccer team at the University of Tennessee at Martin from 2008-2010. Before pursuing a career in coaching, Saylor was the starting goalkeeper at Lambuth University from 2004-07. During his stellar career at Lambuth, Saylor was an honorable mention NAIA All-American, an NAIA All-Region selection and Lambuth’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2007. He also helped lead the Eagles to a Trans-South Conference Championship while he was there. MERCER UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

WILLIAM D. UNDERWOOD

Reflecting an increased emphasis on research, Mercer will meet the criteria established by the Carnegie Foundation for reclassification as a research-doctoral university during the 2009-10 academic year. Over the past three years, the number of Ph.D. students has increased from fewer than 25 to approximately 200, while the amount of externally funded research expenditures has grown to nearly $25 million. In addition to increased levels of funding from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, Mercer scientists have for the first time been funded as eminent cancer scientists by the Georgia Cancer Coalition, while other Mercer scientists are now receiving funding to support their research through the Georgia Research Alliance. The University has intensified its longstanding commitment to service-learning and community engagement under President Underwood’s leadership. During the spring of 2009, Mercer announced a $5 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to support continued revitaliza-

tion of the College Hill Corridor between campus and downtown Macon. The groundbreaking Mercer On Mission program, launched in 2007, has been recognized by the Clinton Global Initiative as “an exemplary approach to addressing a specific global challenge.” Mercer earned the highest federal recognition for community engagement by the Corporation for National and Community Service in 2009, and in 2008 became the only university in Georgia to receive the Carnegie Foundation’s designation for “Curricular Engagement and Outreach and Partnerships.” Prior to joining Mercer, President Underwood served at Baylor University as Interim President and held the prestigious Leon Jaworski Chair at the Baylor School of Law. President Underwood is an accomplished educator and scholar. He was designated a Master Teacher at Baylor in recognition of extraordinary classroom teaching over an extended period. He is an elected member of the American Law Institute and the American Bar Foundation. President Underwood was awarded the J.D. degree summa cum laude by the University of Illinois College of Law in 1985, where he graduated as class salutatorian and was an editor of the University of Illinois Law Review. Following graduation, he clerked for the Honorable Sam D. Johnson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, prior to practicing law for several years with a large law firm in Dallas. He also holds an undergraduate degree from Oklahoma Baptist University, where he met his spouse, Lesli. They have two children, Jessica and William.

The strength and conditioning program at Mercer has three primary goals. These goals are to maximize athleticism, minimize injuries and increase mental/physical toughness. The way this is accomplished is by primarily utilizing ground based, multi-joint, triple extension, explosive exercises. Athletes will perform exercises of all types but focus is put on three main exercise styles: Olympic lifting, power lifting and plyometrics. The goal is to try and replicate the movements, velocities and forces that are experienced during competition of the athlete's sport. Served by a professional full-time strength and conditioning coach as well as an assistant coach, Mercer Athletics provides a full range of weight training and exercise equipment to assist Mercer’s approximately 226 student-athletes in reaching their athletic potential through strength training and conditioning. Easily accessible from anywhere in the University Center, the equipment includes the following: • three top of the line power lift full racks • over 3,000 pounds of plates • a line of variable resistant machines • three sets of Iron Grip dumbbells • five free standing adjustable benches
