Welcome to our Summer Days out and Clubs, Classes & Activities Issue! I feel like the COVID border closures and lockdowns have really solidified the national sense of being one big family with each state and territory behaving like a sibling. NSW is the know-it-all oldest sibling who thinks they run the family but we all remember the time they drank all of the adults’ liquor cabinet and barfed in the front garden. VIC is the second oldest and much cooler sibling who constantly eye-rolls and judges the rest of us. However, we know they still have to borrow money to pay rent and flunked half of their Arts degree. QLD is the smug middle child who thinks by not being in trouble they have somehow achieved something. They haven’t. SA, WA and NT are siblings from Dad’s first marriage and we only see them every other weekend. TAS is the baby who everyone forgets about until it makes a mess. My point is, as a middle child our job as Qlder’s is to hog all the good stuff before the other kids cross the borders and try to have fun. I want to see everyone zipping around the beautiful islands, setting up the full eski and sunshade spread on the northern and southern beaches, a 3-day megapark binge, every kind of animal encounter you can find and daily sunset shots of your toes pointing at water with the “glad you aren’t here” caption. We have the most enviable part of the world at our doorstep, let’s brag about it! Post your pics and tag @familiesmagazine so we can be super jelly. Flip through this edition for ideas to take your summer holidays to the next level.

Here are 25 Random Acts of Kindness suggestions f rom the QACI student community: Random acts of kindness don’t take a lot of effort, but it has a large impact on the person you are being kind to. You could compliment your friend, or express your gratitude to your parents, or if you see a stranger and you think their bag is cool, let them know. It does take courage, but it’s so worth it knowing the impact you have on someone else’s day. – Parul, Year 10

1

Make Someone's Day! Random Acts of Kindness from the students of QACI A touching way to spread joy, random acts of kindness play an important role in social emotional wellbeing (and have just as many benefits for the giver as the receiver!). At the Queensland Academies Creative Industries Campus (QACI) in Kelvin Grove, students and staff cultivate a supportive environment that promotes a sense of belonging, acceptance and community. The QACI culture fosters an appreciation of sharing gratitude through activities such as writing “warm fuzzies” (little notes of positivity that students place in decorated paper bags on each other’s lockers), or giving “big-ups” (positive shoutouts) to peers after completing a team activity, or the famous QACI Minties Moments often held at the end of Assembly where students share praise and encouragement with each other. With the school often cited by students as a place where they feel free to simply be themselves, the QACI culture facilitates development of strong bonds amongst students and staff. It is this culture that inspires the growth of QACI’s “home away from home” atmosphere where students feel not only respected, but truly nurtured.

2 A random act of kindness for me would be giving out little compliments to my friends, family or maybe even a stranger I meet on the bus! Little things like telling someone their hair looks great or that they did an amazing job with their performance can make someone’s day! I know this because it certainly makes mine :D – Max, Year 10

Unexpectedly buy your friends a coffee before school! – Morgan, Year 11

4

Sharing an umbrella with a stranger during a rainy day, offering to pay for someone’s coffee, leave a kind note inside a library book, or set up a food bank. - Caitlin, Year 12

6 There are no limits to what random acts of kindness can be. No matter how small or large, they all make a difference! One of my favourite ways to spread kindness is to simply ask how someone is doing and offer them your full attention, and an open space for them to speak freely and get things off their chest. You never know how much asking how someone is going can genuinely help them! – Laura, Year 10

One could be as simple as holding a door open for someone, or baking something for your neighbours! – Lexi, Year 10

7

I think a great random act of kindness is to give someone an unexpected compliment! Especially someone you don’t know or someone who looks a little lost. I think it can really make someone’s day. – Elena, Year 12

An example of a random act of kindness could be going to the grocery store with your parents and help them to get the groceries or packing the bag! Even offer to do it all yourself! Your parents will love the help. – Gen, Year 11 Smiling at strangers on the bus. – Hannah, Year 11

Take the time to really listen and engage with someone about something they’re passionate about. Ask questions and let them have a chance to share that passion! – Cate, Year 10

11

I think a really good random act of kindness would be to help an elderly person with their shopping or another task that they might be struggling with. Whether this be family members or others, I’m sure they would appreciate the help. – Luke, Year 10

Something that I used to do in Grade 6 was make little cards for service people who rarely received a lot of “thank yous” (like bus drivers and cleaners) and write things like, “have a great day!” Or there’d be a little joke or a riddle inside of them. – Macy, Year 10

My random act of kindness would be to offer someone a seat on public transport regardless of who it is. – Chiara, Year 11

A random act of kindness I really like to do is to remind your friends that you care about them! Sometimes people forget they have a support, so just saying that you value someone goes a long way :) – Adam, Year 11

AN ADVENTURE AWAITS AT YOUR LOCAL PLAYGROUND! Summer for many people is a time of holidays and relaxation; schools are closed and families spend time together. While the adults might be more inclined to enjoy a lazy day or two, children seem to be able to recharge their batteries quickly and are looking out for adventure, activity and fun! Fortunately, you don’t always have to go far to find places that will offer children this stimulation - and they are free. Your local public playground! Every park and playground offers different opportunities for various types of play including climbing equipment, swings, slides and tunnels, spaces to run, room for ball games, bike riding, sand and water play.

Finding a playground near you Your local council’s website will list all your local playgrounds and tell you which features it has, such as fully fenced areas, barbecues, toilets, toddler friendly, bike paths and more. Every local council area has ‘destination’ playgrounds – these are the large parks with the biggest range of equipment and facilities, built for community events – and neighbourhood parks in walking distance of your home. Playgrounds provide many benefits for children through opportunities for active, imaginative and social play. These benefits include B eing outdoors and physically active. Participating in physical activity every day is essential for children’s growth and development. Where possible, encourage walking or riding a bike to the playground. Playgrounds inspire energetic play which supports children’s physical development, helping to strengthen their muscles and bones, improve posture, balance and coordination, and build stamina. The Australian Government Department of Health has the following recommendations for children’s daily physically activity: Toddlers (aged 1–2 years): At least 180 minutes spent in a variety of physical activities including energetic play, spread throughout the day; more is better Pre-schoolers (aged 3–5 years): At least 180 minutes spent in a variety of physical activities, of which at least 60 minutes is energetic play, spread throughout the day; more is better Children and young people (aged 5-17 years) should aim for at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day involving mainly aerobic activities; more is better.

8

Find more information about the Australian Government movement guidelines at health.gov.au/health-topics/exercise-and-physicalactivity T rying out new ideas and skills. The various skill levels of playground equipment and different ground and play surfaces require children to continuously make judgements about their movements and calculate risks. How far down can I jump? What will I hold for balance? Children develop their capacity to assess and manage reasonable risks and learn about safe ways to play. Their ability to maintain focus and adapt their actions helps them to move effectively through the space. Children relish opportunities to test out their abilities and strengths and grow in their achievements. ‘Watch me!’ they call out to the people around them to celebrate their success. Over time and with practice they master many skills, building their self-esteem and the confidence to try new challenges.

Parenting Learning through the senses and connecting with nature. Natural environments can have a soothing effect and reduce stress. Being outdoors increases children’s sensory awareness, as they process information about what they see, hear, touch, taste and smell. D eveloping social skills. Local playgrounds connect families from around the community. Children develop knowledge about social rules and learn important skills through negotiating with siblings and friends, as well as with children they don’t know. This includes taking turns, following another child’s lead and the selfconfidence to share their own ideas. These skills support children to cope with the unexpected and regulate their emotions. Stretching imaginations. Playgrounds provide endless possibilities for free play and creativity. Stroll past any playground to hear the excited voices of children as they invent games, make up the rules and, in their minds, transform their space into another world. A climbing platform becomes superhero headquarters, sticks and leaves are used to decorate spaces or as props in play. ‘The playground, instead of telling the child what to do, becomes a place for endless exploration, of endless opportunity for changing play.’ (Isamu Noguchi) Young children in playgrounds should always be well supervised by adults. Take into account the type of equipment, the numbers of children using the playground equipment, other people using the space, people on bikes and walking dogs. Vigilance around any water is especially important.

And the children will be ready to do it all again tomorrow, so make some time in the days ahead for some fun visits to your local playgrounds!

Before you journey out with your children for some playground play remember to pack the essentials such as sun screen, water bottles and hats. Children are hungry after active play so prepare some healthy snacks and take a picnic blanket for a place for children to rest and recover.

HOW TO

instil virtues in your child IN A SELFIE OBSESSED WORLD

Are your children living in a selfie-obsessed world? Do you feel their emotions and self-esteem are validated by their online connections rather than by ‘real-world’ engagement? Garry Woodford, Pastoral Leader at Southern Cross Catholic College Secondary Campus, provides his insight and tips for raising virtuous children in a selfie-obsessed world.

Please excuse me for my opinions, but after 20 years of teaching in both the primary and secondary sector, designing and implementing social and emotional programs to children, youth and adults, working in the latest innovations of neuroscience, and helping raise my own and partner’s children (including a stepson who is 17 years of age) I am pretty across this concern. On the threshold of my four daughters becoming teenage girls, this is currently something extremely close to the heart of our household. I have almost broken into a cold sweat about it on more than one occasion, worrying endlessly how we are going to encourage four young girls to remain virtuous, confident, engaging, respectful and able communicators, who actually still like us and don’t spend their entire lives primping themselves for the next online Snapchat moment or Instagram-worthy pose. And on it goes. We, as the parents, are often accepting of this behaviour as we feel compelled to get onboard. Often to avoid the conflict, we allow our kids time to connect via social media online, hoping that this will support belonging in our teenagers as they feel one with their community the only way they know how. Yet the research is showing us that there is a consequence for too much technology self-indulgence.

When too much is not enough Alarmingly, the consequences of too much technology results in the hard wiring of our brains to seek the dopamine hit that often only technology stimulation provides. It is as addictive as drugs, but it does not get quelled by the acts of normal life and this is alarming. Living in the day seems far less interesting than being present with

10

our actual friends and family. Our children appear slaves to the machine we know as technology and this is only increasing. Not only that, issues such as body dysmorphia, anxiety and depression are increasing due to life not delivering the same electric-charged impulse gained from our kid’s and students’ devices. Parents, teachers and educators are now battling to keep their children and students engaged, as information from humans is now too slow for their often-over-stimulated brain. Have you ever been halfway through a conversation with your teenager when you notice their phone has buzzed 15 times in the last minute? Not too long ago, back in the dark ages, we did a little thing called communicate. We did not worry about what we looked like as we were hanging with our mates down at the jetty as we could not see ourselves. We did not need the 73 likes on Instagram to feel like we had friends who accepted us. We did not care how our hair fell or what pose we were striking or who was going to see it because we were too busy living our best life as it occurred, in the present. Carefree laughter and presence. This no longer the case.

Lighting the way So how do we still raise virtuous children? Well to start with we need to lead by example. We still need to lay the foundation of their moral code. They learn from us; who we are; how we live. Children are always watching what we do, not what we say. Are we ourselves obsessed with technology? Phones, laptops, iPads as opposed to engaging with our own children or partners? Children who have quality time with their families are less likely to seek external validation.

Your Local Families Magazine December 2020 / January 2021 www.familiesmagazine.com.au

Parenting TIPS FOR PARENTS

Two hours technology a day

7-9 hours sleep for all children and teens

20-30 minutes exercise/outdoor activity

Balanced diet, including plenty of water

Practise 2-5 minutes of mindfulness a day

We need to be mindful of the values we live by. What kind of role models are we? Do our children feel loved, supported, and challenged by us? Do we provide them with boundaries that are set because we care for their wellbeing? Or are they left to their own devices?

No technology in the bedroom and no technology one hour before sleep

Listen and be present

The reality is, the more time spent on technology equals more self-absorbed selfies, and this does not increase or replace genuine connection. Nothing replaces real human connection. As parents, be present. Show up. Engage on a daily basis, which involves quality time – at least 30 minutes a day - spent with your children.

GOOD READS

In our home, we eat together as a family. We play a board game, we discuss the day, we read out a card that requires engagement and discussion from the rest of the family, which includes real-life issues, decision-making, resilience and feeling. Girls particularly need their Dads or a male role model who invests in them. Reading to your children in primary school and sharing a hobby with your child also enables great ongoing connection. The saying ‘the family that plays together stays together’ is as true as ever. Children still need a hug and someone to really hear them. Take the time to listen not just tell them how they need to live. Sometimes they just need that safe and significant parent/guardian in their lives to be there whilst they download.

Hands Up Who Wants a Scholarship?

12

Gone are the days when getting a scholarship is all about being the smartest kid in the room. Just like education itself, times are a-changing! You don’t have to have inside knowledge or be connected to a particular school in order to be successful at gaining a scholarship. These days many, many schools across Brisbane offer a wide range of scholarship opportunities for kids from all walks of life.

Your Local Families Magazine December 2020 / January 2021 www.familiesmagazine.com.au

Education If you think that your child might benefit from gaining specialist teaching in a school that caters for their passion, then keep reading; we’ve got the details on which schools in Brisbane offer scholarships, bursaries and selective entry for kids with a variety of talents and needs.

What is a scholarship? A scholarship is a competitive process wherein students must demonstrate some kind of merit. Your child may have to excel in a particular field and will have the opportunity to prove that during their application.

What is a bursary? A bursary is a non-competitive process that is usually based on financial need but sometimes can come into play when distance is considered. There are currently COVID-19 related bursaries available at Brisbane schools!

What is selective entry? Selective entry is the process at certain schools (sometimes known as an Excellence Program) where students from outside the catchment may be granted enrolment into a school and a specialist learning program if they fulfil certain criteria.

Why do schools offer these options? Scholarships, bursaries and selective entries are great for the school and the student. Not only does it mean that children have access to a wider range of education options, but it also promotes diversity within the student population and culture. It’s a great example of social justice in action and increases the breadth of the school community.

What kind of options are available in Brisbane? This is the great news… just about everything is available for many families across greater Brisbane and Ipswich. You just need to know where to look and how to apply! It is good to check all the details of the offer to find out it covers the full cost of the school program or partial fees. It may also be a set amount towards the cost of the program. Read the details of each opportunity carefully. The following information is not a comprehensive list of what is available, but it will give you an idea of just some of the wide range of choices available to Brisbane families!

Academic Scholarships & Excellence Programs Academic scholarships are what most people think of when they hear the word ‘scholarship’. Your child will have to participate in an entrance exam and demonstrate academic capabilities across a range of subjects. These exams can be external or internal depending on the school and you will need to apply well in advance to sit them. The vast majority are held in February and March each year but can be held throughout the year depending on the school. We wrote more about how that works on our website (www.familiesmagazine.com.au/how-toapply-for-scholarship/) Some schools across Brisbane that offer academic scholarships include:

he Springfield Anglican College T (Springfield)

IES College (Spring Hill)

St Peter’s Lutheran College (Indooroopilly)

The Lakes College (North Lakes)

Cannon Hill Anglican College (Cannon Hill)

Education Sports Scholarships & Excellence Programs

Music Scholarships & Excellence Programs

Your child may be interested in a sporting scholarship. These are offered in a huge range of sports by schools across Brisbane and include: athletics, cross country, swimming, football, rugby, volleyball, golf, tennis and more. There is even one for chess! Typically speaking, to qualify one would expect that your child has participated in their sport at a high representative level. There would be a similar expectation that your child would continue to participate in the sport throughout their tenure at the school.

Perhaps a music scholarship may be an option. To gain a music scholarship at a Brisbane secondary school a certain level of competency and commitment in the study of the instrument would have to be demonstrated. There would also be an expectation that your child would continue to study their instrument of choice.

Some schools across Brisbane that offer sports scholarships include:

14

Somerville House (South Brisbane)

Some schools across Brisbane that offer music scholarships include:

A nglican Church Grammar School (East Brisbane)

Stuartholme School (Toowong)

M ansfield State High School (Mansfield)

Nudgee College (Boondall)

S t Margaret’s Anglican Girls School (Ascot)

Dance & The Arts Scholarships & Excellence Programs As schools look to diversify their intake of applicants, they are beginning to offer more families the opportunity to enrol their children in scholarships and excellence programs that develop the arts. There are scholarships available in debating, speech & drama, visual arts, social justice program and entrepreneurial programs. In performance studies potential students are usually expected to audition as part of their application, as well as submit other documentation by a certain date. Some schools across Brisbane that offer dance and/or the arts scholarships include:

Somerville House (South Brisbane)

Kelvin Grove State Secondary College (Kelvin Grove)

The Lakes College (North Lakes)

Stuartholme School (Toowong) St Peter’s Lutheran College (Indooroopilly)

St Peter’s Lutheran College (Indooroopilly)

Kelvin Grove State Secondary College (Kelvin Grove)

Summer Days Out

d l r o w at Dream

Have you got kids in that difficult-to-please “tween and teen” age group? When it comes to keeping them entertained, their tastes are a little more demanding and, shall we say, sophisticated? They want excitement, adventure, and a sense of freedom while still having you - or a Cabana (keep reading, it will all be explained!) – as a base to come back to. You can satisfy ALL their needs with a day out at Dreamworld and WhiteWater World.

What’s to love for Tweens at Dreamworld?

What’s to love for Teenagers at Dreamworld?

In that upper primary bracket, ages 9-12, your tween still fondly remembers DreamWorks family movie nights. Shrek, Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda will never get old, and we grown ups love watching them too! You can indulge your own guilty pleasure of posing for a photo with Shrek (under the guise of “doing it for the kids”) at the Dreamworld DreamWorks Experience.

What do teenagers want? Thrill rides! And food… but mainly; thrill rides!

DreamWorks Experience The DreamWorks Experience is a like stepping into a scene from an animated movie, filled with themed rides and ‘cartoon’ buildings. The rides are a step-up from the gentler rides of ABC Kids World and Wiggles World, which themselves are perfect for younger siblings. DreamWorks Experience is where children can take to the air on the Escape From Madagascar roller coaster, the Dronkey Flyers, Gingy’s Gliders and the Puss In Boots Sword Swing – and go upside down on the giggle-inducing Pandamonium! There’s also live stage shows, water play, and rides a little closer to the ground for those not quite ready for thrill rides! There are rides in DreamWorks Experience suitable for riders from 90cm in height, and if your child is over 120cm tall they can experience all the rides this area has to offer. To be honest, DreamWorks Experience is a favourite destination for our family when we visit Dreamworld. We tried to get Nanna on Escape From Madagascar but she was having none of it (too high on the “thrillometer”), and then later she rode Mick Doohan’s Motocoaster. Go figure! She did enjoy getting her picture taken with Shrek, though. I digress, let me tell you about Dreamworld and WhiteWater World for teenagers!

18

Thrill Rides There are plenty of rides at Dreamworld to satisfy your teenager’s need for speed and taste for adrenalin. If they like to see their world spinning, The Claw, Pandamonium and Tail Spin will answer their need. If they want to spot the L-Plate on their car from 119 metres up sky-high, then The Giant Drop will give them pause to do so before plummeting at the speed of gravity safely back down to earth. The great thing about visiting Dreamworld with your teenagers is that you don’t have to go on the thrill rides with them, unless you want to of course! You’re free to wander around the shops and visit the animals, or sit back with a coffee and a book, safe in the knowledge that the kids will find you when it’s time to eat! Being 110cm or taller will get you on Mick Doohan’s Motocoaster, and a minimum height of 130cm gives you access to ALL the thrill rides (average min. rider height for thrill rides is 120cm). The Claw has a maximum rider height of 200cm.

Summer Days Out WhiteWater World – Tweens and Teens Love It! Dreamworld is the only Gold Coast theme park that has rides, wildlife and water park all in the one place. Your Dreamworld entry ticket covers them all, and you don’t have to choose “which one shall we do today?” because you can do everything!

Water Slides and Ripper Rides WhiteWater World is open all through the summer holidays. It’s the perfect place for tweens and teens to chill, burn off energy, hang with friends and have a splashing good time. The water park is huge, and if you didn’t think a slide could be a thrill ride you’re in for a surprise! Previous visitors will already know of adrenalin-inducing favourites like The Green Room and aptly-named The Wedgie, but have you experienced Fully 6 yet? Fully 6 is six huge new water slides with varying thrill levels to suit beginners (tweens) and older kids who want to impress their friends with their bravery (teenagers!). Your kids can choose to take the plunge down slides that are open-aired, enclosed with special light effects, partially enclosed or totally steep for the ultimate body slide experience. Minimum rider height to experience Fully 6 is 120cm.

Cave of Waves If water slides aren’t your family’s ‘thing’, the Cave of Waves is a fully-patrolled beach-style experience where the whole family can paddle or swim. Watch out, though, because when Surf God Huey grumbles and groans the sudden wave surge can reach heights of 1.5m!

Hire a Cabana! There are lots of sun loungers available at WhiteWater World but for the best all-day experience we recommend hiring a shady Cabana. Each Cabana comes with deck chairs, couches, a coffee table and mini refrigerator, making it ideal for summer days out. Hiring a Cabana is the best way to settle in for the day and give your tweens and teens a base to come back to. Remember tweens, young teens and weak swimmers require full adult supervision around the park and on water activities.

There’s more to love! Dreamworld has a ‘wildlife precinct’! If your tween or teen loves animals, you must visit Tiger Island and Corroboree. Dreamworld works

towards tiger preservation and conservation in the wild through the Dreamworld Wildlife Foundation, and you can learn all about the Foundation and Dreamworld’s resident tigers at the daily tiger presentations. Corroboree is all about our Australian natives and is home to kangaroos, koalas, bilbies, wombats, saltwater crocs, dingoes, snakes, nocturnal wildlife and so much more. A visit to the wildlife area is an opportunity to slow the pace and grab a bite to eat before heading back to the rides and thrills!

Retail and food There are themed retail and dining experiences throughout Dreamworld and WhiteWater World, where you can find souvenirs, clothing, and international cuisine, but one store you don’t want to miss is the LEGO® Store. The LEGO® Store has full size models built from LEGO® and thousands of kits available to buy. Hint: Christmas shopping! The LEGO® Store is right next to the car park and can be accessed by the public without entering the park.

The best way to enjoy it all With so many opportunities to make new memories, you will want to go back to Dreamworld and WhiteWater World again and again. The best way to do this is with a Locals Annual Pass. For just a little more than the cost of a one-day entry, the Locals Annual Pass allows you to visit as often as you want over a 12-month period, with entry to Dreamworld, WhiteWater World, and SkyPoint Observation Deck (Surfers Paradise) included. I know how I’ll be keeping my tweens and teens entertained this summer!

Locals Annual Pass Bonuses Your annual pass will also gain you entry to one Happy Halloween event, one ice-skating entry at a Winterfest event, plus a free digital photo pass and discounts on food and merchandise. For details about the Locals Annual Pass and the many other things to do at Dreamworld and WhiteWater World, read our full article online at www.familiesmagazine.com.au/dreamworld-fortweens-and-teenagers Written by Joanne Crane, co-editor of Families Magazine, on behalf of Dreamworld Australia.

Things to do in

CAIRNS on your Family Holiday

Cairns is the perfect destination for a family holiday. From the beautiful beaches to the historic rainforests and the World Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef, there are activities for everyone, suited to every budget. Boasting a warm tropical climate all year round, Cairns has two seasons – the wet season and the dry season. The wet season brings humidity and high likelihoods of rainfall from November to April. Prices are lower across the board during the wet season, with cheaper domestic flights and accommodation. The rainforests are at their most vibrant and rivers and waterfalls are bursting with life. The dry season is the peak season (April to November) with idyllic weather and temperatures averaging 18-26 degrees. During the winter months, the weather is dry with clear skies and calm winds, making it the perfect time for a family escape.

Big Days Out and Experiences Visit the Great Barrier Reef It’s a given - you can’t go to Cairns and not visit the World Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef! Tour companies offer snorkelling and diving excursions, or if you’re a non-swimmer and prefer to remain out of the water, take a trip over the coral in a glass-bottom boat. If you have the opportunity, hop aboard a helicopter to experience the reef from a very different perspective. You can admire the beautiful blue water as you fly over lush tropical islands, little cays and coral beds. For a fun way to spot turtles and colourful fish, a Scuba-Doo ride offers a memorable experience. Zoom around the reef on an underwater scooter and descend three meters to the coral below on a fully guided tour with Great Adventures. Visit Fitzroy Island Fitzroy Island is a tropical paradise where the rainforest meets the reef. Only a 45-minute ferry ride from Cairns, the relaxed island has plenty to do. Visit the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre or trek up to the Lighthouse for unbelievable views, snorkel and swim off the award-winning beaches, play on the ocean trampoline or hire out a kayak or stand up paddle board for hours of endless fun! Skyrail and Kuranda Scenic Railway Take a return round trip via cable car and historic railway over and through World Heritage-listed rainforest canopies, past spectacular waterfalls and incredible scenery.

20

Your journey will take in a stop at Kuranda Village, a picturesque rainforest village in the mountains. The colourful village is a delightful mix of quirky surprises. Visit the famous Kuranda Markets, enjoy beautiful walking trails or get up close and personal with native wildlife. We rate the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary – a Kuranda icon! You can choose to take just one mode of transport both ways, but for the full experience we recommend you take the Skyrail one way and the Scenic Railway the other. Mossman Gorge 80km north of Cairns you will find the beautiful Mossman Gorge. Crystal-clear water cascades over large granite boulders in the Mossman River gorge. Lush rainforests cloak steep mountainsides from the riverbanks up to the rugged eastern slopes of the Main Coast Range. Park up at the Visitors Centre and pay your entrance fee to visit the gorge. Part of the historic Daintree National Park, Mossman Gorge is another ‘must do’ item on your Cairns bucket list. Visit Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures is the best place to see crocodiles and local wildlife up close. Just 40 minutes north of Cairns, spend your day exploring the 2100 metres of boardwalks and pathways that lead you on a journey through woodlands and rainforests, enjoy educational wildlife presentations, and take a boat cruise across Hartley’s Lagoon to spot the crocodiles.

Families Travel Adventure with Babinda Kayaking

Palm Cove

Take on a couple of mini rapids (or ripples) as you kayak down the gently flowing waters of Babinda Creek, a crystal-clear mountain stream teeming with fish, turtles and platypus! Babinda Kayaks offers half or full day tours perfect for the whole family.

Palm Cove is one of Cairns’ most iconic beaches. The idyllic seaside village is perfectly located between Cairns and Port Douglas and offers a mixture of fine dining, cafes and ice cream parlours. Drop a line at the jetty, enjoy a relaxing swim or utilise the free barbeque areas.

Visit the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park Discover where Australia begins at Tjapukai. Explore the rich history of the world’s oldest living culture and enjoy a unique cultural experience with performance, dance, food and arts. This is one of the most authentic Aboriginal tours available in Australia and is a mustvisit when in Cairns.

Ellis Beach Just five minutes north of Palm Cove is Ellis Beach. The picture-perfect scene offers tranquil waters and a string of coconut trees. The quiet beach is also home to the Ellis Beach Bar & Grill with tasty food and great deals! Port Douglas

Cairns Family Attractions There are lots of fun indoor and outdoor activities to keep the kids entertained for a half or full day. Our kids voted these the best. Immerse yourself at the Cairns Aquarium The Cairns Aquarium is one of Australia’s newest and most spectacular aquariums. Exclusively showcasing the stunning aquatic wildlife from Far North Queensland’s reefs and rainforests, travel through 10 ecosystems and discover 71 exhibits. Swim in the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon The Lagoon is an iconic Cairns tourist attraction, with a 4800sqm saltwater pool that offers an all-year-round safe swimming location. Entry is free and lifeguards patrol the Lagoon during opening hours. Soak up some sun and take in the views of the Trinity Inlet.

The tropical town of Port Douglas has it all. Roughly a one-hour drive north of Cairns, experience the stunning views from the famous Great Barrier Reef Drive. Home to Four Mile Beach, you can enjoy a swim in the gentle waves, get fit on the walking trails, shop in the local boutiques and enjoy an alfresco dining experience. Don’t miss the iconic Sunday Markets where you can buy handcrafted local products. Babinda Boulders

Muddy’s playground Muddy’s Playground is by far the best playground in Cairns. Right on the Esplanade, it is home to some epic water fun, two hamster wheels, slides, climbing frames, and even a liberty swing, there is something for everyone at Muddy’s Playground. There is a great café there too! When we visited the kids loved it and did not want to leave! Challenge yourself at Cairns ZOOM and Wildlife Dome Cairns ZOOM and Wildlife Dome is the world’s first challenge ropes course within a wildlife park! Located in the heart of the Cairns CBD, kids (8+) can experience adventure on the rope courses, cuddle a koala, and even zip line over Goliath the 4-metre saltwater crocodile! Jump from a 13-metre high tower in a free fall venture or walk around the external platform in the Dome-Climb to see Cairns from all angles.

Beaches and Water Holes Escape to beaches with sandy shores lined with palm trees, or splash around in stunning natural water holes, for some of the best low-cost family fun around!

The Boulders is a popular swimming and picnic area in the tropical rainforest in the foothills of Bartle Frere (Chooreechillum), a place of spiritual significance for Aboriginal people. The creek itself is populated with huge, surreal boulders with eggshell-smooth water weaving a calm path between them. Every now and again it pools into tiny lagoons where people can kick back and swim – made even better by the fact the water is usually fairly cool, even in the humid summer months Behind the boulders, you can catch a glimpse of Mt Bartle Frere rising in the distance. This is Queensland’s highest mountain and the source of the water from Babinda Creek. Though the boulders are nestled in acres of stunning scenery, it is just the section of the creek with the huge granite boulders that is known as Babinda.
