ChatGPT and similar generative AI programs are blowing up and I welcome our robot overlords. I haven’t the energy to take a considered ethical approach to the pros and cons of this situation so here is a short list of what I’m doing anyway.

Family correspondence: If you have relatives who appreciate the intimacy and thoughtfulness of written updates on your life and family, why not get a robot to pump it out? The secret is to provide the chatbot with a sample of your previous updates, ask it to match the style and provide bullet points of the details. The product will be a soulless translation in awkward language which will motivate you to rewrite it personally!

Complaints: A good complaint email is nuanced and elegant when composed successfully. ChatGPT and I do a digital high five when it takes my torrent of unhinged frustration, removes the emotion and adds some dubious legislative ‘facts’ about my consumer rights. It hits the perfect note of vexatious and single-minded, which suggests protracted administrative back and forths. The ease of generating replies means I can drag these petty battles out for months!

Self-improvement: One of my favourite ways to use ChatGPT is to synthesise contemporary best practice (mindfulness, resilience, growthmindset) into a customised routine designed to fit my personal situation. Think atomic habits, macro meal planning and sleep routine mapped across a week with my personal goals interwoven throughout. I’ll be up deep into the night, hunched in bed to shield my partner from the illuminated screen, as I refine my roadmap to my best self. Often, I’ll polish off the chips and frozen treats to sustain this vision for my future self, covertly tapping and crunching like a rodent with Wi-Fi. Tragically I’ve been too exhausted to implement a single day of this schedule, but any day now!

Finally, I asked ChatGPT “Why am I like this?” and it replied, “You are the way you are due to a combination of genetics, upbringing, experiences, personality traits, and environmental factors, but understanding and accepting yourself while striving for personal growth is key.”. Oh thank goodness- it’s my parents fault!

How to get early intervention support

You don’t have to be a psychologist to know that early intervention is critical when it comes to supporting our children’s early learning and development needs, as well as better preparing ourselves as parents to manage and cope with the everincreasing challenges of raising a family and running a household while balance work and other life demands.

The research is conclusive

Early diagnosis of autism in the preschool years means earlier access to supportive therapies, such as speech, occupational, and social strategies, and importantly, to NDIS funding to access these supports, that can help our kids engage in Prep more successfully. Outcome studies agree that: 'children with autism make major gains with early intervention.'

This evidence based supporting early intervention repeats across all aspects of child development that our kids can experience, such as attention deficit, reading disorders, dyslexia, learning disorders, as well as early support for social and emotional development.

For example, where reading issues are detected early, reading intervention studies show that children who have targeted support in Prep or Grade 1 make greater gains in basic reading skills than those who received help later in the 3rd Grade; and those who had earlier support continued to develop reading at faster rates well after these programs end.

But it’s not just about our children being academically ready for school. Unsurprisingly, helping common learning-developmental issues before the age of 5-years also helps our kids to be happier and more emotionally successful in Prep. Research emphasises this by reporting that 89% of children who don’t access timely support for cognitive-developmental disorders suffer far greater anxiety and depression at school and difficult behaviours at home.

Getting the right support

In Australia, early assessment and diagnosis is also critically linked to funding to support intervention. And with all evidence showing that the sooner we can access support the less likely we will suffer more chronic conditions or severe disorders, it makes sense that supports for our kids are often more comprehensive.

This goes for parents too. Studies again provide conclusive evidence that if parents, carers, and families receive early intervention, coping and resiliency are enhanced.

In fact, there is no aspect of psychology, whether we’re talking about children or parents, that proposes waiting a really long time before seeking help will be better in the long run for everyone.

Early intervention is an easy point to prove, of course.

However, what is proving much more difficult, is helping families to access the early interventions they need and are entitled to to better support engagement with curriculum, classmates, within families, the workplace, and/or community in a safer, more successful manner.

Mind Wise Psychology

Over the past years, Mind Wise Psychology Services has dedicated its work to helping members of local community, as well as State and National located families, to better accessing a high standard of neuropsychology (cognitive testing) designed to facilitate access to early intervention.

Soft Skills and STEM

Why Communication, Teamwork, and Problem-Solving Skills are Essential in our Technologically Advancing World

In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, the role of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education has become increasingly prominent. As an experienced teacher with over 20 years of teaching, I have witnessed the transformative power of technology in shaping young minds. However, amidst the coding languages and digital interfaces, it is crucial not to overlook the significance of soft skills - those interpersonal and communication abilities that are vital for navigating the complexities of the real world.

Building Bridges, Not Just Codes

In the quest for technological prowess, it's easy to forget that success in the real world requires more than just technical knowhow. Soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, and problemsolving, are the glue that holds together the fabric of a functional society. In the realm of STEM education, integrating these skills is not an option but a necessity.

Communication: The Cornerstone of Connection

Communication skills are the bedrock upon which successful collaboration is built. In the digital age, where virtual interactions often take precedence, fostering effective communication becomes paramount. Teachers and parents alike can encourage children to express their ideas clearly, whether through written or spoken word. Activities such as group discussions, presentations, and even storytelling can enhance a child's ability to articulate thoughts, ensuring they can connect meaningfully in both virtual and realworld scenarios.

Teamwork: Nurturing Collaborative Spirits

In the dynamic landscape of STEM, the ability to work seamlessly within a team is a skill that propels individuals towards success. Encourage teamwork through group projects, where children learn to leverage each other's strengths and navigate differences. Foster an environment where collaboration is not just a buzzword but a lived experience, teaching children the value of collective effort in achieving common goals.

Problem Solving: A Journey, not a Destination

While STEM education equips children with problem-solving skills in the technical realm, the application of these skills extends far beyond algorithms and equations. Encourage critical thinking by presenting real-world problems that require innovative solutions. This not only hones their analytical abilities but also instils a mindset that sees challenges as opportunities for growth.

Nurturing Technological Fluency and Human Connectivity

In the journey of STEM education, let us not forget that soft skills are the compass guiding children through the uncharted territories of the real world. By integrating communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills into our educational approaches, we are not only preparing children for a technologically advancing future but also fostering a generation capable of connecting, collaborating, and thriving in the intricacies of human interaction.

Practical Tips for Holistic Development

Encourage Open Communication: Create an environment where children feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and ideas without fear of judgment. This lays the foundation for effective communication.

Foster a Collaborative Home Environment: Engage in activities that require teamwork, whether it's cooking a meal together or solving a family puzzle. These experiences translate into valuable teamwork skills.

Embrace Challenges: Instead of providing immediate solutions, encourage children to explore multiple solutions to a problem. This cultivates resilience and a proactive approach to problemsolving.

Balance Screen Time with Face Time: While technology is an invaluable tool, ensure there is a balance. Face-to-face interactions are essential for developing social skills that extend beyond the digital realm.

Active Listening Exercises: Teach children the importance of active listening by engaging in activities like storytelling or discussing their day. Encourage them to paraphrase what they've heard, fostering not just communication skills but empathy as well.

Structured Group Projects: Assign collaborative projects that require planning, delegation, and execution. This could be a family garden, a DIY home improvement task, or organising a small event. These experiences reinforce teamwork in a practical setting.

Mindfulness Practices: Introduce mindfulness activities such as meditation or deep-breathing exercises. These practices enhance emotional intelligence, teaching children to manage stress, focus better, and understand their emotions and those of others.

Problem-Solving Scenarios: Present hypothetical scenarios and encourage children to brainstorm solutions. This develops their critical thinking skills, and by discussing various perspectives, it enhances their ability to find innovative solutions in real-life situations.

Role-Playing Interactions: Use role-playing exercises to simulate different social situations. This helps children practice effective communication, conflict resolution, and understanding diverse points of view in a controlled and supportive environment.

Community Engagement: Involve children in community service or volunteer activities. Working together for a common cause outside the family unit enhances their sense of social responsibility, empathy, and cooperation with diverse groups.

High Schoolers Can Learn Online with FisherONE

Does your child’s school offer ALL the subjects they want and need in Years 11 or 12? They might not, but that doesn’t mean they can’t!

By the time ATAR or QCE subjects are selected in Year 10, your child has a pretty good idea of what they want to study at university or the career direction they are headed in. At the very least, they have a pretty good idea of what subjects they enjoy, and which they don’t.

There’s no fun in compromising or being forced to do a “fill in” subject just because it’s the only one available for a study period timeslot. And there’s definitely no fun in trying to switch schools to find one that will accommodate the subjects your child needs for their ATAR or post school study..

Thankfully, all that is becoming a thing of the past! Your child can now study those all-important subjects online without compromise, and without leaving their current school.

Introducing FisherONE

FisherONE, developed by St John Fisher College, is designed to meet the needs of students who have difficulty accessing specific subjects at their current school. By enrolling in a FisherONE subject alongside their current school subjects, students expand their options and can ensure their senior subject profile more closely matches their post-school aspirations.

Here’s how it works…

Working with your child’s current school

In Year 10, students complete a SET plan to help them structure their senior learning around their abilities, interests, and ambitions.

Brisbane Catholic Education Base Schools advocate for FisherONE throughout this process in their Subject Guide, which is distributed to students. Certain subjects at base schools are only available via FisherONE, e.g., McAuley = Music, Chanel College = Spec Math.

To engage in online learning at FisherONE, your child will need a personal or school learning device such as a laptop or tablet with a camera, reliable internet access, headphones with a microphone, and subject-specific resources like calculators as required.

FisherONE works in partnership and collaboration with your child’s school to ensure all learning is delivered seamlessly and comprehensively, and the online learning platform is purposebuilt to allow students to access all courses regardless of their geographic location.

Fitting in seamlessly with students’ existing school subjects

FisherONE offers single-subject enrolments that seamlessly integrate with your child’s current school timetable. Typically, students may study 4 -5 subjects at their Base School and 1-2 subjects with FisherONE. Specific times are scheduled for online subjects, just like all their other subjects.

Students choose to attend one of two live online classes per week. They can choose between a before-school lesson, or a lesson run during the school day. The remaining time is spent completing work independently during allocated lesson time. Students can complete coursework online, connect with other students, and have one-on-one sessions with their teacher when required.

The learning process

At FisherONE, online learning involves the use of a digital learning environment where students engage in facilitated learning experiences. FisherONE teachers create a structured curriculum,

deliver online lessons, provide learning resources, and offer ongoing support to students.

FisherONE fosters a collaborative and engaging learning environment that encourages active participation, inquiry and teamwork.

Interactive lessons, peer-to-peer interaction and teacher-student collaboration promotes a sense of belonging and encourages students to contribute to their learning journey actively.

Students participate in group live lessons, and individual followups, and interact with their classmates through the online platform.

Support where it is needed

Students are supported throughout the learning process by their FisherONE teachers, FisherONE Middle Leader and the Assistant Principal of FisherONE. Students are also supported by their Base School Leader. Students also have access to IT support at their Base School and through FisherONE.

Contributing towards their ATAR

All FisherONE subjects are compliant with the QCAA standards and expectations. FisherONE teachers are experienced in delivering curriculum-aligned content and assessments, ensuring that students receive a rigorous and high-quality education. FisherONE believes in empowering its students to become

self-motivated, persistent learners who are eager to explore new horizons. Online learning requires dedication, discipline, and effective communication. It is for those genuinely interested in the chosen subject, who share a love for learning and are committed to success.

Assignments, assessments and exams

Assignments and subject-specific assessments are submitted via Microsoft Teams.

Students remain onsite at their Base School for supervised exams.

Covering the costs

FisherONE invoices the Base School a per subject fee. The Base School decides what charges (if any) are forwarded to the parents. Most schools cover all costs involved whereas some schools have integrated a memorandum of understanding based on the satisfactory completion of said course completion.

ChatGPT in Your Child’s Classroom: Friend or Foe?

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as learning from experience, reasoning, and problem-solving. These systems aim to mimic human thinking functions, enabling machines to analyse data, recognise patterns, and make informed decisions very quickly.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence language model designed to engage in interactive and dynamic conversations with humans. It utilises advanced natural language processing techniques to generate human-like text responses based on the input (prompts) it receives.

The Rise of ChatGPT in Schools:

ChatGPT is now a familiar presence in many classrooms. This AI tool is now being harnessed to enhance traditional teaching and learning methods, offering a range of benefits and, of course, posing certain challenges.

5 Ways Students Can Use ChatGPT for School Work

Let’s take a look at how ChatGPT can be used by students to help them with their schoolwork.

Personalised Learning Assistance: Students can use ChatGPT to receive personalised learning support tailored to their individual needs. 5 Ways Teachers Can Use ChatGPT for Teaching

Let’s look at how ChatGPT can be used by teachers to enhance their teaching.

Customised Lesson Plans: Teachers can utilise ChatGPT to generate customised lesson plans tailored to the specific needs and learning styles of their students. By inputting key topics or learning objectives, the AI can assist in creating engaging and differentiated lesson content, supporting a more personalised approach to teaching.

Interactive Classroom Activities: ChatGPT can facilitate interactive classroom activities by generating prompts, questions, or scenarios for students. Teachers can use the AI to spark discussions, encourage critical thinking, and create dynamic learning experiences that actively involve students in the lesson.

Immediate Student Feedback: Teachers can leverage ChatGPT to provide instant feedback on student work. Whether it's reviewing written assignments, assessing math problems, or evaluating language proficiency, the AI can offer quick insights, allowing teachers to identify areas of strength and areas that may need further attention.

Support for Diverse Learning Styles: With its adaptability, ChatGPT can assist teachers in catering to diverse learning styles within the classroom. By generating supplementary materials,

explanations, or alternative examples, the tool supports educators in reaching students with varying needs and preferences.

Professional Development and Resource Creation: Teachers can use ChatGPT to enhance their professional development by generating resources, research summaries, or even assistance with curriculum planning. The AI can assist in staying updated on educational trends, providing insights that can inform teaching practices and contribute to continuous improvement.

Pros and Cons of Students Using ChatGPT

As parents, it's imperative to stay informed about the integration of ChatGPT in schools. While the technology brings forth exciting opportunities for enhanced learning, it is equally vital to understand and be able to navigate potential challenges thoughtfully. Engaging in a dialogue with educators and school administrators can provide valuable insights, enabling parents to actively contribute to the shaping of their child's educational experience in the digital age. Some of the pros and cons are:

Pros:

Personalised Learning Experiences: ChatGPT offers a personalised touch to education, tailoring learning experiences to individual student needs. It adapts to different learning paces, providing additional explanations and resources, and fostering a more tailored and effective learning environment.

24/7 Learning Support: One of the standout advantages is the 24/7 availability of ChatGPT as a virtual tutor. This means students can access learning support beyond regular school hours, allowing for immediate clarification on concepts, assistance with homework, and additional guidance.

Diverse Learning Resources: ChatGPT's ability to generate diverse learning resources enriches the educational toolbox for both primary and secondary school teachers. From engaging lesson plans to interactive activities, the tool aids educators in creating dynamic and captivating learning experiences.

Cons:

Privacy Concerns: The integration of ChatGPT raises valid privacy concerns, particularly regarding the storage and handling of sensitive student data. Parents must seek assurances from educational institutions about robust privacy measures to protect their children's information.

Overreliance on Technology: A potential drawback lies in the risk of overreliance on technology. Striking a balance between the use of ChatGPT and traditional teaching methods is crucial to maintain a holistic approach to education, ensuring students develop critical thinking skills alongside technological proficiency.

Emotional Intelligence Limitations: Despite its capabilities, ChatGPT lacks emotional intelligence. This limitation means it may struggle to address the emotional and social aspects of learning, aspects that are crucial for a well-rounded education.

In conclusion

Determining whether ChatGPT is a friend or foe in your child's education is nuanced. While it offers substantial benefits, such as personalised learning, 24/7 support, and diverse resources, it is not without challenges, including privacy concerns, the risk of overreliance on technology, and the need for emotional intelligence.

Thus, the key lies in a balanced integration, where educators, parents, and students collaboratively navigate the landscape of AI in education, harnessing the advantages while addressing potential drawbacks.

With thoughtful implementation and vigilant oversight, ChatGPT can undoubtedly be a valuable companion in the educational journey, contributing to enhanced learning experiences for our students.

But seeing as ChatGPT wrote this whole article, it would say that, wouldn’t it!

Education Update: National Curriculum V9

Australian schools form one of the leading education systems in the world. High standards and consistency across the country are top reasons for achieving this status. Over 10 years ago, the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) used an extensive and collaborative curriculum development process to produce the Australian Curriculum. A detailed explanation of the shaping of the Australian National Curriculum can be found on the ACARA website at: www.acara.edu.au

Why do we need a national curriculum?

According to ACARA, having a national curriculum helps “all young Australians to become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens”. We sit on a united front. No matter where your child learns across Australia, the goal remains the same. Of course, as with all school curriculum, this process remains evolutionary, updates are essential, feedback critical and new versions released as needed.

A national curriculum also benefits families making an interstate move. The transition to a new school is much easier when all schools are reading from the same page.

When does the new curriculum come into effect?

Version 9.0 of the Australian Curriculum was endorsed by education ministers on 1 April 2022. Schools across the country began implementing the new curriculum (Version 9.0) from 2023 according to their own timelines. That means that this year, in 2024, schools Australia wide are welcoming, adjusting, and improving your kids' education! Be kind to your teachers everyone, this process takes time, but with time, improvement happens, and our children receive a better education.

As a parent and teacher myself, I wear two hats; the teacher hat, concerned about what this adjustment means to schools, teachers and my students, and my parent hat, concerned about what this means for my own children.

As a teacher, this means easier access and more direct focus on the core curriculum. “[With] a reduction in content [21% reduction in fact], as well as better alignment between achievement standards and content descriptions, and improved links between learning areas and the general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities” (Australian Government, Department of Education, 2022), I have more time to invest in the well-being of my class.

As a parent, this means more support for my children, more focussed learning experiences, and time to develop socially, emotionally, and physically.

What’s new in the new curriculum?

Version 9 of the National Curriculum has several key changes. Some of these include: More attention to “essential mathematical facts, skills and processes”; “prioritising Australian history within a global context”; the “addition of privacy and security in the Digital Technologies curriculum”; and “strengthening the focus on students being physically active”. The safety of our children is at the core of these changes. How good is that?!

Teachers can go to www.australiancurriculum.edu.au and click ‘Learn More’ to find links to a ‘Website Tour’ or ‘F-10 Curriculum’.

Scroll down this page to see a detailed description of the ‘Three Dimensions of the Australian Curriculum’ and ‘Latest on the Australian Curriculum’. You might notice the new search platform when accessing the curriculum. It’s clear and concise, and allows for ‘quick select’, or ‘advanced select’ options to choose from. It’s very user friendly and accessible.

Parents, follow the same link above, and click ‘Parent Information’ on the top toolbar. This takes you to a clear overview of what the site offers you. It provides links to Resources, including ‘Handy Links’ and ‘FAQs’ for parents. These colourful pages can be downloaded and printed as desired and used to help you understand what exactly your child will be learning.
