Back to school! Psyche!

Team ball sports

We be chillin like villains who won’t be upskilling ‘cause Covid be milling around all of them chillun. I’m rebranding as a rapper because my very expensive Masters of Education will sit in a drawer till FEB (fingers crossed I’m still relevant by then). Why did I spend all our savings on a shut-in holiday assuming I’d be making fat stacks of relief teaching cash? No more extra guacamole on your burritos, kids, we have to survive till February!

How to make friends

There is a small light. Once again I failed to pre-order the school stationary and need to go online and make that happen. However, I’m in the middle of a really good Stan series and really want to commit to that experience; the kids’ books can wait till the last week of Jan. In other news this is the 50th issue of Families Magazine! This free publication has been far more consistent and knowledgeable than I will ever be, so thank you to the incredible team who collate the articles, source experts, connect with community groups and businesses, organise layout, network with advertisers, get the magazine out across Brisbane, and basically carry the whole operation from issue to issue while I bang out some stream of consciousness nonsense to highlight how good the other 99.9% of the content is in comparison. I’ve always wanted to be the flaky, fun uncle in the family and I’ve achieved my dreams here.

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS Did you know there is a National Random Acts of Kindness Day? Every day is a day to be kind, but each year on February 17, individuals, groups, and organisations are encouraged to perform a random act of kindness to brighten someone’s day. A random act of kindness doesn’t have to be big; even something as small as letting someone go before you in a queue, or paying for a stranger’s coffee, can make a huge difference to someone – and you never know how far that kindness could spread!

Team Sports for Kids

Team sports build valuable skills and attitudes that will last your child a lifetime. Being part of a team teaches children cooperation and communication, develops listening skills, and instils the value of patience whilst waiting their turn on the subs bench! Encourage your child to try several team sports in the early years to find out what they like and what they are good at. Here are eight popular team ball sports that children can try from a young age, and enjoy right through to high school.

BASKETBALL The fast-paced energetic game of basketball is surging in popularity, and with the Brisbane Bullets in the National Basketball League, kids in Brisbane can find plenty of home-grown local heroes to inspire them. Basketball is great for improving balance, coordination, and agility through dribbling the ball while dodging the defence. It also requires a lot of focus to track the position of other players on the court, plan passes, and make those free-throws! There are basketball clubs and associations across greater Brisbane. Starting age varies, with some offering fun classes for children as young as 3. Children in Upper Primary through to adulthood have the opportunity to participate in representative basketball tournaments, so be prepared to travel! Find an association near you here: www.familiesmagazine.com.au/junior-basketball-for-kids-inbrisbane

SOCCER It’s been called The World Game and The Beautiful Game, but whether you know it as soccer or football there’s no denying it’s one of the most popular sports for kids in Brisbane. Soccer is great for developing cardiovascular fitness, endurance, and balance. With each player having their own role within the team, children really learn the value of cooperation and “winning as a team”, not as individuals. Children as young as two can experience their first kick-around in clubs across greater Brisbane, and there is lots of scope for skill development at special academies. Find a club near you here: www.familiesmagazine.com.au/soccer-clubs-kids-brisbane

NETBALL Netball as long been a favourite amongst girls in Brisbane, and boys are increasingly getting in on the netball fun too! It’s a challenging game of skill with fast-paced action and passionate players. The Brisbane netball season runs from late March to August/ September with most games taking place on Saturdays and clubs training at least once a week. Some netball clubs also offer summer seasons so you can play all year round! Children can start playing from as young as five in the NetSetGo program. Parenting mixed Junior AFL teams up to 11 years old. From U12 boys and girls play in their own Youth AFL competition teams, with many clubs now focussing on developing their girls-only teams as the sport grows in popularity amongst girls. Most clubs sign on in February/March with games played April/May through to August/September. Find a club near you here: www.familiesmagazine.com.au/afl-kids-brisbane

BASEBALL VOLLEYBALL Volleyball is an anytime-anywhere sport; a great game for family picnics, days in the park, or played on the beach. All you need is a place to spike your nets, enough players and a volleyball and you’re set! Boys and girls who want to take the game more seriously you can sign up to a local kids’ volleyball clubs for coaching or sociable play within a team. Volleyball is generally played from high-school upwards, but there are places that offer a modified game for children from 6 years old too. Volleyball requires quick reflexes and agility, and a certain amount of bravery when diving to stop those low balls hitting the ground! Find a club near you here: www.familiesmagazine.com.au/kids-volleyball-clubs

TOUCH FOOTBALL

Baseball is a great summer team sport that kids of any age or ability can enjoy. Boys and girls as young as 4 can start with T-Ball and Little League, and they can keep playing through the leagues right into adulthood.

Touch football is a low-contact team sport similar to rugby league. It is fast growing to be one of the most popular sports for Brisbane kids, and is great for building confidence and spatial awareness.

T-Ball and Rookie Ball are entry-level programs for kids from 4-9 years of age. In T-Ball (U8) players hit the ball from a tee. Players in Rookie Ball (ages 7-9) play from a ball pitched by an adult, learning to hit a moving target.

Several variants of Touch Football have evolved, making it accessible to any age and any skill level, and children as young as three can participate. Some variations even allow for the whole family to play in Families Mixed Teams!

Players aged from 10 to 12 years can join and play opposing teams in Little League before progressing to Junior Baseball Leagues in high school. Junior Baseball is for players U14 to U20 who want to play competitively.

There are two touch football seasons each year: the first from late January to June and the second from mid-July to early December.

If you want your child to learn teamwork, cooperation, hand-eye coordination, and stay fit and healthy, then check out our list for a junior baseball club near you!

HOCKEY Hockey is a fast-paced ball-and-stick team sport that requires hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness. Children can get started at junior hockey clubs from 5 years old in the 8-week “Hookin2Hockey” program. The program introduces basic hockey skills and helps develop gross motor movement and team spirit in moderated games.

AFL (AUSSIE RULES) Aussie Rules Football (AFL) is a national sport that anyone can get into, and it’s unique to Australia! Kids in Brisbane can start as young as three years old with the Kinderkick and Auskick programs, and boys and girls can play in

Older children and kids who have completed the Hookin2Hockey program can play in divisions and competitions across Brisbane. Find a club near you here: www.familiesmagazine.com.au/junior-hockey-clubs-kidsbrisbane

HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD

make friends Making f riends sounds so simple – just talk to people, right? But simple as it sounds, there’s a lot more involved than just saying hello. So how can we give our kids the skills they need to form meaningful connections and make good f riends?

HEY THERE, SHY GUY! Some children seem to naturally form friendships with apparently no effort. Gregarious and confident, their presence fills the room, and everyone is drawn to them. But what about the shy kids who hang back and go unnoticed? Simply telling them to “go on over and say hello” isn’t going to work, but there are things we as parents can do to help.

THE FIRST STEP The first step to any new friendship is the initial introduction. Introductions to someone new could be via mutual friends, clubs and classes, or being partnered to work on a project together in class. It’s amazing how many lifelong friendships are formed by pairing seemingly opposite personalities in the classroom!

change the game or dominate (the aim is to fit in) and if the other kids don’t want them to join in on this occasion, they should find something else to do instead and try again another time.

Converse The first conversations are about getting to know each other and finding common ground. Trade information about likes and dislikes, take the time to listen to answers, and reciprocate with thoughts and experiences. Parents can help practice through role playing and modelling physical cues like appropriate eye contact and body language to show attentive listening and engagement.

To make the most of the introduction, your child will need certain social skills, and the great thing about social skills is that they can be learnt. Take another look at those confident, gregarious kids. Are their parents and older siblings just the same? Chances are that the kids are naturally modelling the behaviours they see everyday within their own family. If you are not a confident person yourself, this is where the practice of “fake it till you make it” can work wonders. Demonstrating confident social behaviour provides your child the opportunity to observe and learn from you. Making a habit of acting confident can lead to an actual boost in confidence, and practice makes perfect!

HOW TO BE “CONFIDENT” Confidence is the quiet inner knowledge that you are capable. To make friends you need to be capable of holding a conversation, listening, cooperating, observing, compromising, regulating emotions and empathising. It’s a big list, but these are all learnable skills that parents can help children develop.

Observe Before approaching a group of potential new friends, encourage your child to take a moment to see what they are doing and look for ways to fit in. Could they be a character in their role-playing game, or make up the number in a team? Is there something your child could help with? Remind your child to not try to

8

Cooperate and compromise Finding something that requires cooperation provides the opportunity to work together towards a common goal. This could be a craft or school project, or agreeing to be certain characters in a game, even if that means compromise in giving up the coveted lead-character role. Practicing negotiation skills for fair turn-taking and task sharing can give your child the confidence to navigate conflict. While new friendships are still in their developing stage, it’s best to avoid competitive activities that could lead to conflict or upset. Parents can help minimise the risk of conflict by putting away prized possessions or competitive toys prior to any playdates.

Parenting

Don’t get upset if at f irst you get a knockback – you’ve planted the idea of potential f riendship, and now those potential new f riends need time to observe you too.

You may need several short one-on-one playdates before expanding to group playdates. Preparation and coaching can greatly improve the chances of success. Familiarising your child with different cultures and beliefs and modelling inclusion will help your child develop socially, opening up a world of new experiences and opportunities. Children with a ADHD diagnosis are often considered loud, disruptive, silly, or aggressive, but despite their challenges, their parents will know them as warm, loving, funny and entertaining. If your child has ADHD they will need more help learning to control impulses and understand consequences of their actions. Invest time in helping your child recognise their own cues to escalating emotions and discuss strategies that will help them regulate emotions and outbursts. This is especially important as your child approaches teenage years. There are resources available online at ADHD Australia and the ADHD Foundation.

Emotions Learning to regulate emotions – and understand others’ emotions – plays an important role in being able to maintain friendships. Parenting style often sets the foundations for this skill.

If your child is on the autism spectrum, they may require more help with understanding emotions, facial expressions, and body language. We have a great article on our website about helping kids with ASD make friends. You can find it here:

Children whose parents talk to them sympathetically about difficult moods and teach constructive ways to handle feelings are better able to regulate their own emotions and empathise with others. Avoid dismissing your child’s emotions and feelings with comments like “You’re just being sensitive” or punishing your child for displaying negative emotions that they are still learning to control. Talk to them about why they feel the way they do and devise strategies together that can help your child recognise triggers and manage emotions.

www.familiesmagazine.com.au/making-friends-autism

FITTING IN WHEN YOU’RE DIFFERENT Children are wonderfully unique, and those who are perceived to have less in common with their peers may find it harder to fit in. Differences in race, gender, religion, physical or intellectual ability needn’t be a barrier to meaningful friendships but may require a little more understanding or input to find a common bond. A one-on-one playdate helps children focus on each other and eliminates opportunity for exclusion. Do a little research first to discover any common interests (Minecraft, nature, scootering, Lego etc.) and design the playdate around that. If your child has autism or anxiety, choose a location that is familiar and comfortable for them. Your Local Families Magazine February / March 2022 www.familiesmagazine.com.au

SCHOOLYARD GAMES Schoolyard games provide a great way to make friends, find shared interests, and have fun! Do you remember any of these from your own schooldays? It’s time to teach new kids old tricks!

GOOD GAMES TO PLAY AT SCHOOL OUTSIDE Here are some games to play outside. Which one is the BEST game to play at school? We will leave that for you to decide!!

HOPSCOTCH

One of our favourite games to play at school is Hopscotch. Use a piece of chalk to draw a hopscotch pattern on the ground. A simple grid is a ladder of numbered squares alternating one square followed by two squares up to the number 10, or you can start 3 single squares before the first double. Each player has a marker such as a stone, bottlecap, shell, button, etc. For younger children simply hopping across the single versus double squares can provide hours of fun. The first player stands behind the starting line to toss his or her marker in square one. Hop over square one to square two and then continue hopping to square ten, turn around, and hop back again. Pause in square two to pick up the marker, hop in square one, and out. Then continue by tossing the stone in square two. All hopping is done on one foot unless the hopscotch design is such that two squares are side-by-side. Then two feet can be placed down with one in each square. A player must always hop over any square where a maker has been placed.

10

Getting out: A player is out if the marker fails to land in the proper square, the hopper steps on a line, the hopper loses balance when bending over to pick up the marker and puts a second hand or foot down, the hopper goes into a square where a marker is, or if a player puts two feet down in a single box. The player puts the marker in the square where they will resume playing on the next turn, and the next player begins. This is one of the best games for school!

ITTA

A game you probably haven’t heard of before is Itta. Itta is a fun schoolyard game which combines teamwork, communication and speed. The kids form two teams and mark two bases roughly the same size. Pick one person to be known as ‘The Itta’. This person must try and make it to the enemy’s base before being tagged by the enemy. If ‘The Itta’ is tagged by the enemy, the person who tagged him is now ‘The Itta’. The game then continues until someone makes it into the enemy base. That team will receive one point.

HANDBALL

In Australia handball is played in a square, generally around 3-4 metres across, divided into four squares. Each square is assigned a title: King (K), Queen (Q), Jack (J) or Deuce/Dunce (D) – or 1, 2, 3, 4. It’s a bit like squash using hands for racquets, and the beauty of this game is that there is no real point scoring – it’s just for fun! A player stands in each square and the “King” (square 1) always serves. The ball is hit in such a way that it bounces in the player’s own square before making a second bounce in another player’s square. The receiver must then hit the ball so that it bounces in their own square before making a second bounce in another’s square. A player is “out” if they • fail to bounce the ball in their own square first • fail to make the second bounce in an opponent’s square • fail to return the ball to another player after the first bounce in their own square When a player is out, they move to the “D” square, or the end of the line of waiting players. All players in squares ranked below theirs move up one place, and a new player joins in at the D square. You can read more about Australian handball here: www.familiesmagazine.com.au/how-to-play-handball-rulesfor-kids

GOLDEN CHILD

Golden Child is played on a netball or basketball court with lots of players. The players are divided into two teams: the shooters and the runners. The shooters line up before the free-throw line (or a suitable distance dependent on skill) and the runners line up on the corner of the baseline. One of the runners is chosen to be the Golden Child at the end of the line. The aim of the runners is to complete a full circuit of the half-court before a basket/goal is scored. If a goal is scored, the runner must stop and freeze where they are, and a new runner goes. The aim of the shooters is to score enough goals to freeze all the runners before the Golden Child can complete their run. If the Golden Child runs, they can tag frozen players as they pass to “unfreeze” them, and if all the runners make it home before the next basket, their team wins. Then the teams swap places and the game begins anew.

TAG

This is a great game for school because it is one of the simplest games to play. One person is chosen to be “it”, and they have to tag another player who is running away from them. If a player is tagged they become “it”. This game combines speed and agility and can be played with absolutely no equipment. The aim of the game? Don’t be “it”.

NINJA

Ninja is another game for lots of players. The players form a circle with each person putting one hand in (all hands touching). They then yell “NINJA” and take a big jump backwards, pulling into a ninja pose. The game moves in a clockwise direction with one player being the “Ninja” chosen to start. The Ninja must make ONE movement only to try to tap another player between the elbow and the wrist before play moves on and the person to their left becomes the Ninja. If the Ninja tries to tag you, you must move your arm so not to be tagged. If a player moves when it’s not their turn, they are out. If you are tagged, then you are out. When there are fewer than 7 players left, move inward with each attack to form an ever decreasing circle. Last person standing wins!

CROCODILE

Mark out a rectangular area using cones, sticks, or other visual markers. This rectangle is the river. Two to four players are selected to be crocodiles, while the other players line up for an opportunity to cross the river. A crocodile is selected to yell out phrases such as ‘If you ate an apple today, cross the river’, and the players that applies to must cross. The crocodiles attempt to tag players whilst they are crossing the river, with tagged players being “out”. Once 4 crossings of the river have been made, new crocodiles must be selected and all the players are back in.

GOOD GAMES TO PLAY AT SCHOOL INSIDE Play these games on a really hot day, or when it’s raining.

HOT POTATO

This is a great game for kids of all ages. Sit them in a circle and turn up the music. Throw the potato (or a small ball) around and when the music stops, the player with the potato is out. You can spice things up by having to remember who is in or out. If you throw it to someone who is out, then you’re out too. Last player in is the winner!

PEN RACE

Another one of our favourite school games for kids is possibly one you haven’t heard of – “Pen Race”. The players are divided into two teams and the teams line up backto-back, one team to the left, the other to the right. The players in each team put their hands out to their sides resting against their neighbours’ hands. A pen is placed at one end of the line and play starts at the opposite end. The aim is to race a signal – a hand tap – down the line from start to the finish. When the signal reaches the player at the other end of the line they must close their eyes and try to find the pen. The first team to get the pen will win!

SPELLING TOURNAMENT

Another wonderful game to play for school is ‘Spelling Tournament’. One player will say a word, the player to their left will then say the first letter of the word, and the next player will say the second letter of the word and continue until the word is finished. If a player takes longer than three seconds to say a letter, they are out, if a player doesn’t say the correct letter then they are out. If a player to your right is out, you will say what they should have said. Last person standing wins.

MUSICAL CHAIRS Who hasn’t heard of this classic?

Set up chairs in a circle with one chair less than the number of players. Move around the circle of chairs while music is played. When the music stops, players must race to sit in a chair. The one person who doesn’t make it to a chair is out, and another chair is removed before play resumes. Last person standing is the winner of this fun game!

12

SIMON SAYS

A player is selected to be “Simon” and all other players must do what Simon says – but only if the command starts with the words “Simon says…”. For example, “Simon says make a noise like a chicken”. If a command is given without the preface “Simon says…” and a player follows the command, they are out. For example, “Hop on one foot”. Any player hopping is out!

CHAIN WHISPERS

Players sit in a circle and one person whispers a sentence to the player on their left. The sentence can only be said once, then the player must whisper what was heard to the player to their left. Keep going until the sentence reaches the end. The player at the end must say what they heard out loud to the group. How close can you get to the correct sentence? For example, ‘Purple Pokémon pinch pink berries’ could turn into ‘Murple Pokémon synch thick cherries’. How wacky can your sentence get?

10 FINGERS

This is a fun game to play on the school bus, school yard, or anywhere! All players will hold up 10 fingers. One player will start a sentence with, “Never have I ever”, e.g. “Never have I ever eaten all my Easter eggs in one day”. Anyone who has done what that person “has never” will put a finger down. Players take turns making a “Never have I ever…” statement, and when all of your fingers are down, you’re out. Last person standing wins! We hope this has given you some ideas to make your school breaks fun!
