A Channel-Changer Thursday’s Primetime Emmy Awards nominations served up some surprises (Ricky Gervais?) alongside the usual suspects (Bryan Cranston, of course). HBO’s fantasy epic “Game of Thrones” landed the most nominations with 19, followed by FX’s newcomer “Fargo,” which picked up 18 nominations by submitting as a miniseries. Here are our immediate reactions to the nominees. EMILY YAHR (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Which drama did “True Detective” bump off the best drama list? (It joins “Breaking Bad,” “Downton Abbey,” “House of Cards,” “Mad Men” and “Game of Thrones.”) That would be 2012 winner “Homeland.” The Showtime terrorism nailbiter got knocked off the list after a roundly criticized season — however, star Claire Danes did pick up

a nod for best actress in a drama. She’s joined by Michelle Dockery of “Downton Abbey,” Robin Wright of “House of Cards” and Kerry Washington of “Scandal.” Julianna Margulies jumped back on the list for “The Good Wife,” while Lizzy Caplan picked up her first nom for Showtime series “Masters of Sex.”

A Crowded Field While Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson represent “True Detective” on the lead actor in a drama list, the frontrunner is surely Bryan Cranston for his performance during the final season of “Breaking Bad,” when the show morphed from cult favorite to cultural phenomenon.

Jon Hamm was nominated for the seventh straight time for “Mad Men,” along with Kevin Spacey on “House of Cards” and last year’s surprise winner, “The Newsroom’s” Jeff Daniels.

Laugh It Up Over on the comedy side, HBO’s “Silicon Valley” — a satirical send-up of tech and startup culture — picked up a surprise nomination in the best comedy category, alongside heavyweights “Modern Family” (which has never lost on Emmys night) and academy favorites “Veep,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “Louie.” Also in the category: “Orange Is the New Black,” submitted as a comedy.

Funny Girls Melissa McCarthy is back on the list for lead actress in a comedy for “Mike & Molly,” along with Lena Dunham of “Girls,” Amy Poehler of “Parks and Recreation,” Taylor Schilling of “Orange Is the New Black” and the unstoppable Edie Falco of “Nurse Jackie.” Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who has won in the category the past two years, also got a nod and would seem to be the favorite yet again.

Really? Ricky Gervais, whom Hollywood loves to hate, scored a surprising nod in the comedy lead actor category alongside Jim Parsons of “The Big Bang Theory” (who notched his third win last year), Don Cheadle of “House of Lies,” Matt LeBlanc of “Episodes” and Louis C.K. of “Louie.” And “Shameless” landed a nomination for lead actor William H. Macy.
