Defense: Plea Deal Drops Sex-Assault Charges
The Rev. Fred Phelps Sr., 84, who founded a Kansas church known for its protests at military funerals, is in a care facility, according to a church spokesman. USA Phelps Today reported Sunday that Phelps’ estranged son Nate said in a Facebook post that his father is “on the edge of death.” Members of Westboro Baptist Church protest at funerals of soldiers with signs containing such messages as “Thank God for dead soldiers,” claiming the deaths are God’s punishment for American immorality and tolerance of homosexuality and abortion. Defense attorneys say an Army general has agreed to a plea deal that includes the dropping of sexual-assault charges against him. A news release Sunday from Sinclair lawyers representing Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Sinclair says that he will plead to lesser charges in exchange for having the sexual-assault charges dropped along with two others that might have required Sinclair to register as a sex offender. Sinclair was accused of twice forcing a female captain to perform oral sex on him during a three-year extramarital affair. (AP)
