An Intricate Way to Get Out of Show-and-Tell Day at School Officials at an upstate New York school district say a kindergartner spent a day at the wrong school after getting on the wrong bus. Schenectady city school district officials say the mistakes began Wednesday morning when the 5-year-old girl boarded the wrong bus, which was driven by a substitute driver. At the school, teachers were expecting a new first-grader and asked the girl if she was that student. The girl said she was and spent the day answering to the no-show first-grader’s name. What if Clinton Doesn’t Run in 2016? 24 Medals Of Honor President Barack Obama will present the Medal of Honor to 24 Army veterans Tuesday following a review that found vets who had been bypassed because of prejudice. Three of the 24 are still living.

A China Trip First lady Michelle Obama and her daughters are set to visit China on Wednesday for a weeklong trip.

Keep This in Mind Today It’s true: It’s frigid out there. But Thursday is the first day of spring, and we think there may be some law that forbids snow after that. No? Sigh. Also, the National Cherry Blossom Festival begins Thursday.

Analysis Conventional wisdom — and even some unconventional wisdom — dictates that Hillary Rodham Clinton is running for president in 2016. A universe of super PACs and other organizations has been built — and staffed by former Clinton operatives — to prepare the way for Hillary in 2016. And yet, running through all of these preparations is a current of uncertainty about whether the former first lady, senator and top diplomat will, you know, actually run. The thinking is that Clinton would never let efforts this extensive go forward if she, in her heart of hearts, wasn’t planning to run. But that, like most of what we think we know about Clinton and her plans, is based not on facts but on interpretation. One thing that everyone — those who want Clinton to run and those who don’t — agrees on is that she

No, Seriously, What Would Happen? To be clear, we still expect Hillary Rodham Clinton to run. But what if she doesn’t? We rank the candidates considered to have some possibility of either running for or winning the Democratic nomination. They are listed alphabetically in tiers. (T WP)

J PAT CARTER (AP)

Well, for starters, the Democratic primary could be a bit chaotic

1. The Clinton Wing

3. Not Interested, but …

Hillary Rodham Clinton: She is the biggest front-runner the party has ever seen. If she runs, she almost certainly wins.

Andrew Cuomo: We continue to believe that a race without Clinton would be too hard for the ambitious New York governor to resist. Kirsten Gillibrand: The senator from New York has emerged as a rising star in the party. Deval Patrick: After saying for years he wasn’t interested in running, the Massachusetts governor recently opened the door to the possibility. Elizabeth Warren: A hero among liberals who don’t love Clinton, Warren is the sort of anti-corporatist, anti-Wall Street populist many thought they were getting with Barack Obama.

2. If She Says No, Then … Joe Biden: The VP wants to run. But he knows he would start way behind Clinton and might never be able to make the race close. But if Clinton passes, Biden is in. Martin O’Malley: The Maryland governor is the most credible candidate who will most likely run even if the 2016 field includes Clinton. Brian Schweitzer: The former Montana governor wants to run, though he (sort of) demurs publicly.

Can We Go, Too? More colleges are paying students to take a year off after high school to travel, volunteer or do internships so students of all income brackets can benefit from “gap years.” The gap-year program starting this fall at Tufts University will pay for housing, airfare and even visa fees; the University of North Carolina offers $7,500 in its program. Although gap years are more popular in Europe, they have started to gain traction in the United States. (AP)

has simply not made up her mind on the race yet and likely won’t for some time. So, what happens if she decides not to run? In a word: chaos. Here’s why: There’s a panoply of ambitious Democrats who watched Barack Obama leapfrog them in 2008 and won’t want to miss their opportunity this time around. If Clinton announced on March 1, 2015, there would only be 10 months before the calendar turned to 2016. Given how much her candidacy — or at least her decision-making about her candidacy — has and will continue to freeze the field, there would be a mad scramble for donors, activists and key consultants in early states, the likes of which we haven’t seen in modern presidential history. There is no obvious front-runner in a Clinton-less field. Vice President Joe Biden would be the nominal favorite for the nomination, but you could also make a credible case for New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo or Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren or even New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand to occupy that space.

World Region celebrates, but Russia now faces Western sanctions Simferopol, Ukraine Fireworks exploded and Russian flags fluttered above jubilant crowds Sunday after residents in Crimea voted overwhelmingly to secede from Ukraine and join Russia. The United States and Europe condemned the ballot as illegal and destabilizing and were expected to slap sanctions against Russia for it. Ukraine’s new government in Kiev called the referendum a “circus” directed at gunpoint by Moscow — referring to Russian troops in the strategic Black Sea peninsula after seizing it two weeks ago. But after the polls closed late Sunday, crowds of ethnic Russians in the regional Crimean capital of Simferopol erupted with jubilant chants in the main square, over-

joyed at the prospect of once again becoming part of Russia. The Crimea referendum offered voters the choice of seeking annexation by Russia or remaining in Ukraine with greater autonomy. After 50 percent of the ballots were counted, Mikhail Malishev, head of the referendum committee, said more than 95 percent of voters had approved splitting off. Opponents of secession appeared to have stayed away Sunday, denouncing the vote as a cynical power play and land grab by Russia. Russia was expected to face strong sanctions today by the U.S. and Europe over the vote, which could also encourage rising proRussian sentiment in Ukraine’s east and lead to further divisions in this nation of 46 million. Residents in western Ukraine and the capital, Kiev, are strongly pro-West and Ukrainian nationalist. Some residents in Crimea said they feared the new Ukrainian gov-

Search for Missing Jet Continues to Expand Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Even before someone at the controls calmly said the last words heard from the missing Malaysian jetliner, one of the Boeing 777’s communications systems had already been disabled, authorities said Sunday, adding to suspicions that one or both of the pilots were involved in the disappearance of the flight. Authorities also examined a flight simulator confiscated from the home of one of the pilots and dug through the background of all 239 people on board, as well as the ground crew that serviced the plane. Investigators have said someone on board the plane first disabled one of its communications systems about 40 minutes after takeoff. Around 14 minutes later, the transponder that identifies the plane to commercial radar

Hoping It Was a Hijacking With new evidence this weekend pointing to deliberate action and continued flight for hours after last contact, hopes have surged for some families of passengers on the vanished Malaysian airliner over the possibility of a secret runway somewhere on an ocean island or some remote rugged countryside. As the days have passed, said one Chinese man who knows a passenger on Flight 370, his friend’s relatives have only clung all the more to the hijacking idea. “It gives them a thread of hope to hang onto,” he said, speaking anonymously for fear of offending the family. systems was also shut down. The fact that both systems went dark separately offered strong evidence that the plane’s disappearance was deliberate. On Sunday, Malaysian Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein

said at a news conference that the final, reassuring words from the cockpit — “All right, good night” — were spoken to air traffic controllers after the Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System was shut off. Whoever spoke did

not mention any trouble on board. Still, Hishammuddin cautioned against jumping to conclusions. House Intelligence Committee chairman Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) on Sunday told CBS’ “Face the Nation” that so far no theories about the plane had risen “from plausible to the probable,” and that despite the speculation about flight directions and timelines the aircraft may well be “at the bottom of the Indian Ocean.” The search area now includes 11 countries the plane might have flown over, Hishammuddin said, adding that the number of countries involved in the operation had increased from 14 to 25. Imagine if the Texans suddenly took over power (in Washington) and told everyone they should speak Texan,” said Ilya Khlebanov, a voter in Simferopol. President Barack Obama told Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday that Crimea’s vote to join Russia would never be recognized by the United States. Ukraine’s new prime minister also insisted that neither Ukraine nor the West would recognize the vote. “Under the stage direction of the Russian Federation, a circus performance is underway: the socalled referendum,” Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said. “Also taking part in the performance are 21,000 Russian troops, who with their guns are trying to prove the legality of the referendum.” JOHN-THOR DAHLBURG AND MIKE ECKEL (AP)

Stuck on 16th Street? A dedicated bus lane could help riders, but it faces opposition Along the 16th Street corridor, the bus stops are crowded with frustrated riders. Traffic congestion causes frequent delays. Buses often are too full to pick up more passengers. Now riders, smart-growth advocates and Metro officials say the problems in one of the city’s top bus corridors could have a simple solution: a dedicated bus lane. The concept, popular among transit users, is concerning to many drivers who use the route and some residents who fear a bus lane would reduce already scarce parking. The proposal puts D.C. in a tough position as the home of some of the nation’s worst traffic congestion aims to become more transitcentric, pitting the needs of suburban residents who commute to the city via vehicle against those of the growing number of D.C. resident who rely on public transportation.

Squeezed in By the time the bus arrived at the 16th and U streets stop one morning last week, bodies were squeezed up against the exit doors. A glimpse up 16th Street showed a cluster of buses slowly making its way through heavy traffic. “You wait a long time, and see many, many buses pass by,” Catherine Depret said as she and her 22-month-old son waited at 16th and Corcoran for a bus to get him to daycare. On a good morning they might wait 15 minutes. On a bad day she is forced to take a cab. Metrobus ridership in the corridor has increased 25 percent in the past four years, Metro said, and it expects the trend to continue. The S-Line carries more than 20,000 passengers daily — an average of 4,237 during the morning rush hour alone. Metro has extended the limitedstop S9 service, added larger buses

to the night runs and added nine morning S2 trips to ease crowding in the southern portion of the corridor. And this month, Metro started calling in emergency buses to start the route when people are left behind by crowded buses. “Public transportation needs to supersede the convenience of suburban commuters,” said Sarah Spurgeon, who rides the S-Line buses from her home near U Street.

Car Conflict But some riders say traffic congestion isn’t the problem. They say there simply aren’t enough buses. “Watching a full bus pass by in a dedicated lane does not help anyone get where they need to go,” said Ron-

nie Kweller, who lives just south of U Street. Kweller also worries about the possibility of taking away parking in an area that already has limited options. “It will be a real hardship to people who have cars,” she said. A 2013 District Department of Transportation study of the corridor recommends a peak-hour transit lane extending for 2.7 miles. It found that a bus lane has the potential to increase transit travel speeds by 30 percent and accommodate up to a 10 percent increase in ridership. But it also would impact parking and could create more vehicular delays at some of the busiest intersections. “Sixteenth Street is a mess but for them to suggest that it is OK to take a lane and dedicate it to buses … is not an acceptable solution,” AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesman Lon Anderson said. A better solution, he said, is fast-tracking Metro’s plan for a traffic signal priority program at 16th Street. Although transit advocates agree the signal initiative is part of the solution, they say it isn’t enough. “We are seeing folks using all the available space on those buses,” said Jim Hamre, Metro’s director of bus planning. “At the current rate of growth we need something else.” LUZ L A ZO (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Diversion Programs Face Uncertain Future Washington Davis, 16, was going out too late, getting in fights, skipping school. It was stupid stuff, until a police officer busted him for fighting. Instead of going to jail, Davis was sent to the Youth Court of the District of Columbia. Early one Saturday morning in the fall, he stood in front of a “jury” of his peers (quite literally — they’d all come before the same court months before) and explained what he had done. The kids sanctioned Davis to weekly sessions with a mentor, who could help him manage his anger. “Having to tell other kids what

you did, you just see how stupid it is,” said Davis, whose full name was withheld since there is no permanent record of his arrest. He is one of the hundreds of kids under 18 arrested in D.C. each year for non-violent crimes such as shoplifting, chronic truancy or drug possession. Many have never been in trouble with the law before. “I learned,” he said. For years, many teens like Davis were sent to the Youth Court, a socalled “diversion program” that works to help kids behave better and stay out of jail. But now the program is in jeopardy. In October, D.C. stopped funding the two primary diversion programs in the city, Youth Court and Access Youth, a mediation program. They were paid for by government grants since 1996, but run as nonprofits.

The amount Youth Court saves the city per case, according to the group’s executive director, Carolyn Dallas. It costs $2,000 to send a teen through the regular court, but only $500 for Youth Court, she said. A.E.

At the time, the city said it planned to develop its own, comprehensive youth justice programs. But that decision caused a small outcry among the city’s juvenile justice advocates.

“These programs significantly reduce recidivism,” said Edgar Cahn, a lawyer and the founder of Youth Court. The facts bear that out. In D.C., 25 percent for kids sent through the regular juvenile justice system get re-arrested compared to 11 percent of Youth Court participants, according to the Youth Court’s executive director, Carolyn Dallas. Now, Youth Court and Access Youth are open again, at least temporarily. The city floated Youth Court $75,000 in February, enough to re-

open for several months. But Dallas says it is not enough to last through the fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30. She and others are scrambling to raise the extra funds. They’re also pushing D.C. to include funding for the Youth Court in the city budget when it is negotiated in April. But that is far from a sure thing. One challenge, advocates say, is figuring out which government agency will take the lead. Should youth diversion programs be the responsibility of the Attorney General? Health and human services? The D.C. public schools? “We’re being as proactive as we can in terms of meeting with the deputy mayors and trying to figure out what the plan is,” said Jodi Ovca, who runs Access Youth. “We’re at a crucial point in the budget system.”

“I’ve had parents come up and tell me that their daughter never would have gotten into college with a scholarship if she’d had a record.”

Just after a prominent D.C. businessman admitted that he illegally funneled cash to Mayor Vincent Gray’s 2010 campaign, D.C.’s top prosecutor, Ronald Machen, delivered a strong message. Anyone else involved should “come forward and own up,” he said, because his office was “not going away.” But with the Democratic primary just more than two weeks away, it appears increasingly unlikely that federal prosecutors would bring any criminal case against the mayor before the April 1 election. Still, Machen’s bold pronouncement — and prosecutors’ assertion that Gray was in on the scheme — puts the pressure on. When the U.S. attorney says “this is the tip of the iceberg, there’s nowhere to go but up, and up is the mayor,” said Georgetown Law professor Paul Butler. “It’s hard to say that the chief executive knew and,

Healthy Schools Act of 2010. The law directed public schools to provide free breakfast to students in their elementary school classrooms. For older students, the law requires breakfast to be provided in settings other than a cafeteria — bagged breakfasts at a kiosk or items offered from a cart in the school lobby, for example. Having students eat together in classrooms reduced the stigma attached to free breakfast, Schlicker said.

The number of K-12 students receiving free breakfast at school is rising across the country, and the District is seeing the fastest growth. Between 2009 and 2013, the number of students served free breakfast in the nation’s public schools jumped by about 2 million, according to the Agriculture Department, which oversees the program. Nationally, the number of K-12 students eating free breakfast at school grew by an average of 18.9 percent in the past five years, from 11.1 million in 2009 to 13.2 million in 2013. But in the District, the rate ballooned by 72 percent over those same years, to 35,038 participating students. Maryland also outpaced the national growth rate in the breakfast program, feeding 154,317 students in 2009 and 211,651 students in 2013, a 37.2 percent increase. Virginia’s growth rate was below the national average at 16.3 percent; it

Businesses, GOP: President’s order will hurt economy Washington President Barack Obama’s move to make more workers eligible for time-and-a-half overtime pay is being hailed by Democrats who see it as a potent midterm election issue and condemned by Republicans and business leaders as presidential overreach. Supporters say it will help the still fragile economy, critics say it will damage it further. It is likely to affect millions of American workers. “From my perspective, they have to be pulling numbers out of the air right now,” said Washington labor lawyer Tammy McCutchen, referring to the conflicting claims by partisans that it would either help or hurt the economy. “We don’t even know what the policy is going to be.” She’s closer to the process than most. As administrator of the Labor Department’s Wage and Hour Division during the George W. Bush administration, McCutchen oversaw the last rewrite of the program in 2004, when the salary-per-week limit separating those who get overtime and those who don’t was increased to $455. Thursday’s presidential memorandum is aimed at workers who make more than the federal minimum but are ineligible for overtime pay under present law because they are designated as management, even when they have little or no supervisory responsibilities.

Obama’s Overtime Plan Continues to Stir the Pot

What Obama Wants Currently, salaried workers making more than $455 a week, or $23,660 a year, aren’t eligible for time-and-a-half overtime if some of their work is considered supervisory, even though many spend most of their day doing manual, clerical or technical work with few management duties. President Barack Obama, above, signed a presidential memorandum Thursday directing the Labor Department to devise new overtime rules “to ensure that workers are paid fairly for a hard day’s work.” The memorandum does not specify what the rules or new salary thresholds should be, leaving the rule-making to the Labor Department. A proposed rule is not expected until the fall. (AP)

“If you’re making $23,000, typically you’re not high in management,” Obama said. The White House contends that the 2004 revisions to the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act are outdated and allow employers to exempt too many workers from overtime pay. The move has angered business groups and congressional Republicans, but it fits in with the overall Democratic midterm election game plan of focusing on income inequality and the middle class. “This will help to build an economy that honors work, not one that steals from workers,” AFL-CIO Pres-

ident Richard Trumka said. Business and conservative groups argue that Obama’s order will have the opposite effect of what is intended and could lead businesses to reduce the number of employees or cut pay, resulting in a drag on national economic growth. “The federal government, in particular, shouldn’t be involved in labor markets in any way, shape or form,” said Jeffrey Miron, director of economic studies at the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank. “It shouldn’t be setting hours legislation and it shouldn’t be providing union protection.” TOM RAUM (AP)

Virginia topped Duke 72-63 in Sunday’s ACC championship game in Greensboro, N.C. The Cavaliers are the top seed in the East Region in the NCAA tournament.

For Virginia, It’s Been Awhile Cavaliers beat Duke to claim their first ACC title since 1976 College Basketball Coach Tony Bennett climbed up to the rim, gave the net a final snip and twirled and raised it toward all those Virginia fans. Savor it, Cavaliers. You’ve waited nearly 40 years for a moment like this. Virginia claimed its first ACC tournament title since 1976 on Sunday by beating No. 7 Duke 72-63 in the final. Ma lcol m Brogdon scored 23 points, and tournament MVP Joe Harris added 15, including a backbreaking 3-pointer with just under 2 minutes remaining for the top-seeded Cavaliers (28-6). Playing in front of a raucous — and mostly orange-clad — Greensboro Coliseum crowd, they shot 45 percent from the field, pestered the Blue Devils into 38 percent shooting and used a late 12-3 run to pull away and claim the second ACC

Other Conference Championship Games Atlantic 10: Saint Joseph’s 65, VCU 61 Langston Galloway, left, scored 19 points and hit yet another huge 3-pointer, and Saint Joseph’s beat VCU to win its first Atlantic 10 tournament title since 1997. The fourth-seeded Hawks (24-9) arrived in Brooklyn on the NCAA tournament bubble. They all but clinched an at-large berth with a win over fellow bubble team Dayton in Friday’s quarterfinals on Galloway’s go-ahead 3, then made that moot by capturing the conference’s automatic bid. (AP)

Big Ten: Michigan State 69, Michigan 55 Adreian Payne scored 18 points and Gary Harris, left, and Branden Dawson added 15 each to lead Michigan State to its second Big Ten tournament title in three years with an upset of Michigan. The third-seeded Spartans (26-8) are getting healthy and will have some momentum entering the NCAA tournament with four wins in five games. (AP)

SEC: Florida 61, Kentucky 60 Top-ranked Florida capped a perfect run through the SEC when Kentucky failed to get off a shot on its final possession, allowing the Gators to escape with a victory. Florida (32-2) built a 16-point lead early in the second half, but Kentucky nearly pulled off an improbable comeback to hand the Gators their first loss since early December. Two missed free throws gave the Wildcats (24-10) a final possession, but James Young slipped trying to drive into the lane. (AP)

tournament title in school history. “We were kind of joking around when we came in — we were asking, ‘Where are all of the Duke fans?’ ” Harris said. “All we could see was orange when we were driving over here. … The city of Charlottesville definitely deserves an ACC tournament title.” Jabari Parker scored 23 points on 9-of-24 shooting for the thirdseeded Blue Devils (26-8), who were making their 31st appearance in the championship game but were denied their ACC-record 20th title. Anthony Gill added 12 points and was 10 of 17 from the free throw line for Virginia. Duke was just 7 of 11 from the line. The Cavaliers came to Greensboro after winning their first outright ACC regular season title since 1981, and were trying to do something not even Ralph Sampson could do. It had been a long time — 38 years — since Wally Walker led Virginia to its only previous ACC tournament title. Now that trophy won’t be alone anymore. JOEDY MCCREARY (AP)

For the first time since 2005, Maryland and Georgetown both missed the NCAA tournament. But there are still a couple of local teams to root for. George Washington got an at-large berth and is the No. 9 seed in the East Region, and American is the No. 15 seed in the West Region after winning the Patriot League.

No. 2 Wisconsin vs. No. 15 American THURSDAY, MILWAUKEE, WISC.

Main storyline: Winning the 3-point line. Wisconsin’s top five scorers each hit at least 29 3-pointers this year. American needs to defend the 3-point line, and make a few from outside themselves, for any chance at an upset. The Eagles stifled Boston’s shooters in the Patriot League final. Player to watch: Eagles guard Darius “Pee Wee” Gardner. The Eagles’ best player at creating his own shot went 7-for-9 for 18 points vs. Boston. Up next: Winner of No. 7 Oregon/ No. 10 BYU

No. 8 Memphis vs. No. 9 George Washington FRIDAY, RALEIGH, N.C.

Main storyline: Guarding the guards. Memphis is one of the best teams in the country at sharing the ball, ranking third in the NCAA in assists per game (17.4). Joe Jackson leads the Tigers in both points (14.3) and assists (4.5). Player to watch: Colonial forward Kevin Larsen. south THE TOP SEED No. 1 Florida The Gators (32-2) didn’t lose to an SEC team all year, going 18-0 in the regular season and beating Kentucky in the SEC title game. The win over the Wildcats extended Florida’s school-record winning streak to 26 in a row. The Gators are a veteran group, with three of their top four scorers being seniors.

THE SLEEPER No. 6 Ohio State The Buckeyes (25-9) have had an upand-down season, but since Feb. 1 they have wins over Wisconsin, Iowa and Michigan State. Senior point guard Aaron Craft is their defensive leader, but the Buckeyes will go as far as LaQuinton Ross can take them. Ross has scored at least 19 points in six straight games.

SECOND-ROUND UPSET No. 9 Pittsburgh over No. 8 Colorado Not much of an upset, but the Panthers (25-9) are going to be a tough out for whoever they face. Talib Zanna, who

had 19 points and 21 rebounds in an ACC tournament win over North Carolina, is a beast in the post. Colorado (23-11) has lost four of its past seven.

BEST POSSIBLE MATCHUP No. 4 UCLA vs. No. 5 VCU (Third Round) With their “Havoc” defense, the Rams (26-8) are a tough team to prepare for in a tournament setting. For a third straight year, VCU led the country in steals. UCLA (26-8) counters with one of the toughest guys to guard in the country, 6-foot-9 sophomore Kyle Anderson.

FINAL FOUR PREDICTION No. 1 Florida This group of seniors — Casey Prather, Scottie Wilbekin and Patric Young — has lost in the Elite Eight three straight years. They’ll take that next step.

east No. 1 Virginia The Cavaliers locked up a top seed with their ACC title game win over Duke. They come into the tournament as hot as anyone, having won 16 of their last 17, keyed by stifling defense and a balanced offensive attack led by Malcolm Brogdon (12.3 ppg).

THE SLEEPER No. 7 UConn Guard Shabazz Napier was a freshman when Kemba Walker led Connecticut to a national title run in 2011. Now, as a do-everything senior, he’s capable of leading the Huskies to a deep run as well. With a veteran core, the Huskies are a force to be reckoned with — as long as they’re not playing Louisville, who handed them three of their eight losses.

Michigan State gives up a stingy 65.3 points per game, which is a full 10 more than the Cavaliers, who give up the fewest points per game in the country. This game will be like a heavyweight title bout, beautiful in its ugliness.

FINAL FOUR PREDICTION No. 3 Iowa State Led by Melvin Ejim, the Cyclones have had their ups and downs, but they are peaking at the right time. Look for them to outshoot and outrun their competition all the way to the Final Four.

The one knock on them has been their schedule. They didn’t play a ranked team all year.

THE SLEEPER No. 8 Kentucky The preseason No. 1 team in the AP poll hasn’t lived up to their high expectations, but the Wildcats are as talented as any team in the field and nearly upset Florida in the SEC title game. Julius Randle, James Young and Willie Cauley-Stein form an NBA-caliber front line.

SECOND-ROUND UPSET No. 12 N.C. State/Xavier over No. 5 Saint Louis At one point this season, the Billikens reeled off 19 straight wins, but they enter the NCAA tournament having lost four of their past five games. In the Atlantic 10 tournament, Saint Louis

was upset by a ninth-seeded Saint Bonaventure team that was 6-10 in the conference.

Anthony: Knicks Adding Jackson Is ‘Power Move’ NBA Even before meeting with him, Knicks players like Phil Jackson’s hiring to run their franchise. “I’m a chess player, so that was a power move right there,” Carmelo Anthony said. “So now we’re going to see what’s the next move. Anthony said. Jackson will be responsible for trying to keep Anthony, if that’s what he wants, when the All-Star becomes a free agent this summer. He also will have to decide whether Mike Woodson remains as coach after leading the Knicks to the division title last season but only a 27-40 record so far in this one. BRIAN MAHONEY (AP)

Corbin May Miss Entire Season Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Patrick Corbin says he has a partially torn ligament in his left elbow that may require season-ending Tommy John surgery. Corbin left Saturday’s game against Cleveland with forearm stiffness. He was 14-8 and made the All-Star team as a rookie last season. (AP)

reading this film, just flipping the pages,” he said. “It was just a fun ride and after doing a show for so long that I was so proud to be a part of, but it was also emotionally exhausting, just so heavy every single day. I wanted to do something that was a little bit lighter and this was that.” Paul got his wish in a campy film with cliche-filled dialogue and a predictable plot. But the movie also features several European super cars: a Swedish Koenigsegg Agera R, Lamborghini, GTA Spano, Bugatti and McLaren P1.

After playing the sidekick, Aaron Paul lightens up as the lead of ‘Need for Speed’

This new documentary tells the story of Katrina Gilbert, a single mother in Tennessee who struggles to raise her children on a nursing assistant’s wages. She wants to get more education, but that’s easier said than done.

When Aaron Paul received the script for “Need for Speed,” he had very little interest in even reading the story, let alone taking a starring role in the movie. He saw the title and immediately envisioned another poorly done video game adaptation. Or worse, a car film desperately try-

ing to become a franchise. “When I saw ‘Need for Speed,’ I just instantly thought ‘This is a “Fast & Furious” rip-off. This is going to be God awful,’ ” Paul said. Paul ultimately decided to read the script, which is based on the popular Electronic Arts racing game, and found himself surprisingly intrigued by the story of a street racer framed for a crime he didn’t commit. He seeks his revenge while taking a cross-country trip in a custom-built Ford Mustang, which he hopes to enter in an underground and illegal street race. “I just had such a fun time

Speed Demon Director Scott Waugh insisted that all the action sequences and wrecks be done live and did not rely on the use of CGI or a green screen. Paul trained for up to 10 hours a day to do most of his own driving. “I got to learn how to do all the fun stuff … flipping the car around in a reverse 180 and going through stunt courses,” Paul said. “I loved every minute of it, it never felt dangerous.” (AP)

“I just had such a fun time reading this film. … I wanted to do something a bit lighter and this was that.” Both Paul and director Scott Waugh bill “Need for Speed” as an homage to classic car flicks. They cite “Bullitt” and “Vanishing Point” as inspirations. Steve McQueen was in Waugh’s mind during casting when he first heard Paul’s name. “Aaron has this uncanny ability of portraying edge, mixed with charisma, mixed with humble and likability and Steve really had that,” Waugh said. “Steve was such a man’s man and he was also a ladies’ man.” Paul doesn’t buy the comparison. “I don’t know how that makes me feel,” he laughed. “I remember my dad showing me ‘Bullitt’ when I was a kid and Steve McQueen was just a bad-ass. If our director thinks that, I thank him. But I am definitely not claiming to be that.” JENNA FRYER (AP)

The box office take of “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” this weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. Also in its second weekend, “300: Rise of an Empire” came in second with $19.1 million in earnings. “Need for Speed” rounds out the top three, earning $17.8 million in its opening weekend. (E XPRESS)

It’s rare for St. Patrick’s Day to fall near the Jewish holiday of Purim, so it makes sense to celebrate at the Star & Shamrock: part Irish pub, part Jewish deli. The latest in the “teens on a post-apocalyptic Earth” genre is the CW’s new drama “The 100.” The title refers to the number of juvenile delinquents exiled from their space station to a wasted Earth to determine if it’s safe for humans to return. “The 100” premieres Wednesday at 9 p.m.

If it seems like ’90s revivalist rock is all the rage right now, that’s because it is. Take Allison Crutchfield’s band, Swearin’, as an example. Like Waxahatchee, led by her twin sister, Katie, Swearin’s latest album, “Surfing Strange,” is full of fuzzy, distorted guitars, angsty lyrics and lo-fi production values.

OPENS FRIDAY

‘Muppets Most Wanted’ The latest entry in the beloved franchise is led by a colorful cast — and we’re not talking about Kermit and Miss Piggy. Tina Fey, Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell, Christoph Waltz, Salma Hayek, Danny Trejo and Stanley Tucci are all part of the Muppets’ latest adventure, in which a notorious international thief switches places with a certain green frog. ‘Divergent’ Tris (Shailene Woodley) doesn’t fit in her dystopian world’s rigid caste system. When she learns there’s a plot to kill people like her, she gathers forces and fights back.
